स्रंसन्त इव मज्जानस्तावकानां भयान्नृप। तौ दृष्ट्वा समतिक्रान्तौ वासुदेवधनञ्जयौ ॥७-७६-१॥
sraṁsanta iva majjānastāvakānāṁ bhayānnṛpa। tau dṛṣṭvā samatikrāntau vāsudevadhanañjayau ॥7-76-1॥
[स्रंसन्त (sraṁsanta) - falling; इव (iva) - as if; मज्जानः (majjānaḥ) - marrow; तावकानाम् (tāvakānām) - of your people; भयात् (bhayāt) - from fear; नृप (nṛpa) - O king; तौ (tau) - those two; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; समतिक्रान्तौ (samatikrāntau) - passed by; वासुदेवधनञ्जयौ (vāsudevadhanañjayau) - Vasudeva and Dhananjaya;]
(O king, as if the marrow of your people was falling from fear, having seen those two, Vasudeva and Dhananjaya, passed by.)
O king, seeing Vasudeva and Dhananjaya, it was as if the very marrow of your people was melting away in fear.
सर्वे तु प्रतिसंरब्धा ह्रीमन्तः सत्त्वचोदिताः। स्थिरीबूता महात्मानः प्रत्यगच्छन्धनञ्जयम् ॥७-७६-२॥
sarve tu pratisaṁrabdhā hrīmantaḥ sattvacoditāḥ। sthirībūtā mahātmānaḥ pratyagacchandhanañjayam ॥7-76-2॥
[सर्वे (sarve) - all; तु (tu) - but; प्रतिसंरब्धाः (pratisaṁrabdhāḥ) - prepared; ह्रीमन्तः (hrīmantaḥ) - modest; सत्त्वचोदिताः (sattvacoditāḥ) - inspired by courage; स्थिरीबूता (sthirībūtā) - firm; महात्मानः (mahātmānaḥ) - great souls; प्रत्यगच्छन् (pratyagacchan) - approached; धनञ्जयम् (dhanañjayam) - Dhananjaya;]
(All, however, prepared, modest, inspired by courage, firm, great souls, approached Dhananjaya.)
All the great souls, though modest and inspired by courage, were prepared and firm as they approached Dhananjaya.
ये गताः पाण्डवं युद्धे क्रोधामर्षसमन्विताः। तेऽद्यापि न निवर्तन्ते सिन्धवः सागरादिव ॥७-७६-३॥
ye gatāḥ pāṇḍavaṃ yuddhe krodhāmarṣasamanvitāḥ। te'dyāpi na nivartante sindhavaḥ sāgarādiva ॥7-76-3॥
[ये (ye) - those who; गताः (gatāḥ) - went; पाण्डवम् (pāṇḍavam) - to the Pāṇḍava; युद्धे (yuddhe) - in battle; क्रोध (krodha) - anger; अमर्ष (amarṣa) - impatience; समन्विताः (samanvitāḥ) - filled with; ते (te) - they; अद्य (adya) - today; अपि (api) - even; न (na) - not; निवर्तन्ते (nivartante) - return; सिन्धवः (sindhavaḥ) - rivers; सागरात् (sāgarāt) - from the ocean; इव (iva) - like;]
(Those who went to the Pāṇḍava in battle, filled with anger and impatience, even today do not return, like rivers from the ocean.)
Those who went to fight against the Pāṇḍava, filled with anger and impatience, still do not return today, just like rivers do not return from the ocean.
असन्तस्तु न्यवर्तन्त वेदेभ्य इव नास्तिकाः। नरकं भजमानास्ते प्रत्यपद्यन्त किल्बिषम् ॥७-७६-४॥
asantastu nyavartanta vedebhya iva nāstikāḥ। narakaṃ bhajamānāste pratyapadyanta kilbiṣam ॥7-76-4॥
[असन्तः (asantaḥ) - non-existent; तु (tu) - but; न्यवर्तन्त (nyavartanta) - turned away; वेदेभ्यः (vedebhyaḥ) - from the Vedas; इव (iva) - like; नास्तिकाः (nāstikāḥ) - atheists; नरकम् (narakam) - hell; भजमानाः (bhajamānāḥ) - indulging; ते (te) - they; प्रत्यपद्यन्त (pratyapadyanta) - attained; किल्बिषम् (kilbiṣam) - sin;]
(But the non-existent, like atheists, turned away from the Vedas; indulging in hell, they attained sin.)
Those who are non-believers, like atheists, turned away from the teachings of the Vedas and indulged in sinful acts, thus attaining hell.
तावतीत्य रथानीकं विमुक्तौ पुरुषर्षभौ। ददृशाते यथा राहोरास्यान्मुक्तौ प्रभाकरौ ॥७-७६-५॥
tāvatītya rathānīkaṃ vimuktau puruṣarṣabhau। dadṛśāte yathā rāhorāsyānmuktau prabhākarau ॥7-76-5॥
[तावतीत्य (tāvatītya) - thus far; रथानीकं (rathānīkaṃ) - chariot army; विमुक्तौ (vimuktau) - released; पुरुषर्षभौ (puruṣarṣabhau) - best of men; ददृशाते (dadṛśāte) - saw; यथा (yathā) - as; राहोः (rāhoḥ) - of Rāhu; आस्यान् (āsyān) - from the mouth; मुक्तौ (muktau) - released; प्रभाकरौ (prabhākarau) - the sun and the moon;]
(Thus far, the best of men, released from the chariot army, saw as the sun and the moon released from the mouth of Rāhu.)
The two best of men, having been released from the chariot army, saw the sun and the moon as if they were released from the mouth of Rāhu.
मत्स्याविव महाजालं विदार्य विगतज्वरौ। तथा कृष्णावदृश्येतां सेनाजालं विदार्य तत् ॥७-७६-६॥
matsyāviva mahājālaṃ vidārya vigatajvarau। tathā kṛṣṇāvadṛśyetāṃ senājālaṃ vidārya tat ॥7-76-6॥
[मत्स्यौ (matsyau) - two fish; इव (iva) - like; महाजालं (mahājālaṃ) - great net; विदार्य (vidārya) - having torn; विगतज्वरौ (vigatajvarau) - free from distress; तथा (tathā) - thus; कृष्णौ (kṛṣṇau) - Krishna and Arjuna; अदृश्येतां (adṛśyetāṃ) - became invisible; सेनाजालं (senājālaṃ) - army net; विदार्य (vidārya) - having torn; तत् (tat) - that;]
(Like two fish tearing a great net, free from distress, thus Krishna and Arjuna became invisible, having torn that army net.)
Krishna and Arjuna, like two fish that have torn through a great net, became invisible after breaking through the army's formation, free from distress.
विमुक्तौ शस्त्रसम्बाधाद्द्रोणानीकात्सुदुर्भिदात्। अदृश्येतां महात्मानौ कालसूर्याविवोदितौ ॥७-७६-७॥
vimuktau śastrasambādhāddroṇānīkātsudurbhidāt। adṛśyetāṃ mahātmānau kālasūryāvivoditau ॥7-76-7॥
[विमुक्तौ (vimuktau) - freed; शस्त्र (śastra) - weapons; सम्बाधात् (sambādhāt) - from the crowd; द्रोण (droṇa) - Drona; अनीकात् (anīkāt) - from the army; सुदुर्भिदात् (sudurbhidāt) - from the difficult-to-penetrate; अदृश्येतां (adṛśyetāṃ) - were seen; महात्मानौ (mahātmānau) - great souls; काल (kāla) - time; सूर्यौ (sūryau) - suns; इव (iva) - like; उदितौ (uditau) - risen;]
(Freed from the crowd of weapons, from Drona's difficult-to-penetrate army, the great souls were seen like the risen suns of time.)
The great souls, having freed themselves from the dense crowd of weapons and Drona's formidable army, appeared like the rising suns of destiny.
अस्त्रसम्बाधनिर्मुक्तौ विमुक्तौ शस्त्रसङ्कटात्। अदृश्येतां महात्मानौ शत्रुसम्बाधकारिणौ ॥७-७६-८॥
astrasambādhanirmuktau vimuktau śastrasaṅkaṭāt। adṛśyetāṃ mahātmānau śatrusambādhakāriṇau ॥7-76-8॥
[अस्त्र (astra) - weapon; सम्बाध (sambādha) - crowded; निर्मुक्तौ (nirmuktau) - freed; विमुक्तौ (vimuktau) - liberated; शस्त्र (śastra) - weapon; सङ्कटात् (saṅkaṭāt) - from danger; अदृश्येतां (adṛśyetāṃ) - became invisible; महात्मानौ (mahātmānau) - great souls; शत्रु (śatru) - enemy; सम्बाध (sambādha) - crowded; कारिणौ (kāriṇau) - causing;]
(Freed from the crowd of weapons, liberated from the danger of weapons, the great souls who caused the crowd of enemies became invisible.)
The great souls, having been freed from the crowd of weapons and liberated from the danger of weapons, became invisible, causing confusion among the enemies.
विमुक्तौ ज्वलनस्पर्शान्मकरास्याज्झषाविव। व्यक्षोभयेतां सेनां तौ समुद्रं मकराविव ॥७-७६-९॥
vimuktau jvalanasparśānmakarāsyājjhaṣāviva। vyakṣobhayetāṃ senāṃ tau samudraṃ makarāviva ॥7-76-9॥
[विमुक्तौ (vimuktau) - released; ज्वलन (jvalana) - fire; स्पर्शात् (sparśāt) - from touch; मकर (makara) - crocodile; आस्यात् (āsyāt) - from mouth; झषौ (jhaṣau) - fish; इव (iva) - like; व्यक्षोभयेताम् (vyakṣobhayetām) - agitated; सेनाम् (senām) - army; तौ (tau) - those two; समुद्रम् (samudram) - ocean; मकरौ (makarau) - crocodiles; इव (iva) - like;]
(Released from the touch of fire, like fish from the mouth of a crocodile, those two agitated the army like crocodiles the ocean.)
Freed from the burning touch, like fish escaping a crocodile's jaws, those two stirred the army as crocodiles stir the ocean.
तावकास्तव पुत्राश्च द्रोणानीकस्थयोस्तयोः। नैतौ तरिष्यतो द्रोणमिति चक्रुस्तदा मतिम् ॥७-७६-१०॥
tāvakās tava putrāś ca droṇānīkasthayos tayoḥ। naitau tariṣyato droṇam iti cakrus tadā matim ॥7-76-10॥
[तावकाः (tāvakāḥ) - your; तव (tava) - your; पुत्राः (putrāḥ) - sons; च (ca) - and; द्रोण (droṇa) - Drona; अनीक (anīka) - army; स्थयोः (sthayoh) - situated; तयोः (tayoḥ) - of those; न (na) - not; एतौ (etau) - these two; तरिष्यतः (tariṣyataḥ) - will cross; द्रोणम् (droṇam) - Drona; इति (iti) - thus; चक्रुः (cakruḥ) - made; तदा (tadā) - then; मतिम् (matim) - decision;]
(Your sons and those situated in Drona's army made the decision then that these two will not cross Drona.)
At that time, your sons and those in Drona's army decided that these two would not surpass Drona.
तौ तु दृष्ट्वा व्यतिक्रान्तौ द्रोणानीकं महाद्युती। नाशशंसुर्महाराज सिन्धुराजस्य जीवितम् ॥७-७६-११॥
tau tu dṛṣṭvā vyatikrāntau droṇānīkaṃ mahādyutī। nāśaśaṃsurmahārāja sindhurājasya jīvitam ॥7-76-11॥
[तौ (tau) - they; तु (tu) - but; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; व्यतिक्रान्तौ (vyatikrāntau) - crossed; द्रोणानीकं (droṇānīkaṃ) - Drona's army; महाद्युती (mahādyutī) - greatly radiant; नाशशंसु: (nāśaśaṃsuḥ) - predicted destruction; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; सिन्धुराजस्य (sindhurājasya) - of the Sindhu king; जीवितम् (jīvitam) - life;]
(They, having seen, crossed Drona's army, greatly radiant, predicted destruction of the Sindhu king's life, O great king.)
Upon seeing the greatly radiant ones crossing Drona's army, they predicted the destruction of the Sindhu king's life, O great king.
आशा बलवती राजन्पुत्राणामभवत्तव। द्रोणहार्दिक्ययोः कृष्णौ न मोक्ष्येते इति प्रभो ॥७-७६-१२॥
āśā balavatī rājanputrāṇāmabhavattava। droṇahārdikyayoḥ kṛṣṇau na mokṣyete iti prabho ॥7-76-12॥
[आशा (āśā) - hope; बलवती (balavatī) - strong; राजन् (rājan) - O king; पुत्राणाम् (putrāṇām) - of the sons; अभवत् (abhavat) - was; तव (tava) - your; द्रोण (droṇa) - Drona; हार्दिक्ययोः (hārdikyayoḥ) - and Hardikya; कृष्णौ (kṛṣṇau) - the Krishnas; न (na) - not; मोक्ष्येते (mokṣyete) - will be released; इति (iti) - thus; प्रभो (prabho) - O lord;]
(Hope was strong, O king, of your sons. The Krishnas of Drona and Hardikya will not be released, thus, O lord.)
O king, your sons had strong hope that the Krishnas, associated with Drona and Hardikya, would not be released, O lord.
तामाशां विफलां कृत्वा निस्तीर्णौ तौ परन्तपौ। द्रोणानीकं महाराज भोजानीकं च दुस्तरम् ॥७-७६-१३॥
tāmāśāṃ viphalāṃ kṛtvā nistīrṇau tau parantapau। droṇānīkaṃ mahārāja bhojānīkaṃ ca dustaram ॥7-76-13॥
[ताम् (tām) - that; आशाम् (āśām) - hope; विफलाम् (viphalām) - fruitless; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having made; निस्तीर्णौ (nistīrṇau) - crossed over; तौ (tau) - those two; परन्तपौ (parantapau) - scorchers of foes; द्रोणानीकम् (droṇānīkam) - Drona's army; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; भोजानीकम् (bhojānīkam) - Bhoja's army; च (ca) - and; दुस्तरम् (dustaram) - difficult to cross;]
(Having made that hope fruitless, those two scorchers of foes crossed over Drona's army, O great king, and Bhoja's army, which was difficult to cross.)
"Having rendered their hopes fruitless, those two warriors, known for defeating their enemies, successfully crossed the formidable armies of Drona and Bhoja, O great king."
अथ दृष्ट्वा व्यतिक्रान्तौ ज्वलिताविव पावकौ। निराशाः सिन्धुराजस्य जीवितं नाशशंसिरे ॥७-७६-१४॥
atha dṛṣṭvā vyatikrāntau jvalitāviva pāvakau। nirāśāḥ sindhurājasya jīvitaṃ nāśaśaṃsire ॥7-76-14॥
[अथ (atha) - then; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; व्यतिक्रान्तौ (vyatikrāntau) - crossed over; ज्वलितौ (jvalitau) - blazing; इव (iva) - like; पावकौ (pāvakau) - fire; निराशाः (nirāśāḥ) - hopeless; सिन्धुराजस्य (sindhurājasya) - of the king of Sindhu; जीवितं (jīvitaṃ) - life; नाशशंसिरे (nāśaśaṃsire) - predicted destruction;]
(Then, having seen the two blazing like fire, hopeless, they predicted the destruction of the life of the king of Sindhu.)

मिथश्च समभाषेतामभीतौ भयवर्धनौ। जयद्रथवधे वाचस्तास्ताः कृष्णधनञ्जयौ ॥७-७६-१५॥
mithaśca samabhāṣetām abhītau bhayavardhanau। jayadrathavadhe vācastāstāḥ kṛṣṇadhanañjayau ॥7-76-15॥

(Mutually and fearlessly spoke fear-increasing words for Jayadratha's killing, those Krishna and Dhananjaya.)
Krishna and Dhananjaya, fearless and determined, spoke to each other about the plan to kill Jayadratha, instilling fear in their enemies.
असौ मध्ये कृतः षड्भिर्धार्तराष्ट्रैर्महारथैः। चक्षुर्विषयसम्प्राप्तो न नौ मोक्ष्यति सैन्धवः ॥७-७६-१६॥
asau madhye kṛtaḥ ṣaḍbhirdhārtarāṣṭrairmahārathaiḥ। cakṣurviṣayasamprāpto na nau mokṣyati saindhavaḥ ॥7-76-16॥
[असौ (asau) - that one; मध्ये (madhye) - in the midst; कृतः (kṛtaḥ) - placed; षड्भिः (ṣaḍbhiḥ) - by six; धार्तराष्ट्रैः (dhārtarāṣṭraiḥ) - by the sons of Dhritarashtra; महारथैः (mahārathaiḥ) - by great charioteers; चक्षुः (cakṣuḥ) - sight; विषय (viṣaya) - range; सम्प्राप्तः (samprāptaḥ) - having reached; न (na) - not; नौ (nau) - us; मोक्ष्यति (mokṣyati) - will release; सैन्धवः (saindhavaḥ) - the Sindhu prince;]
(That one, placed in the midst by six great charioteers, the sons of Dhritarashtra, having reached the range of sight, will not release us, the Sindhu prince.)
The Sindhu prince, surrounded by six great charioteers who are the sons of Dhritarashtra, has come within sight and will not let us escape.
यद्यस्य समरे गोप्ता शक्रो देवगणैः सह। तथाप्येनं हनिष्याव इति कृष्णावभाषताम् ॥७-७६-१७॥
yadyasya samare goptā śakro devagaṇaiḥ saha। tathāpyenaṃ haniṣyāva iti kṛṣṇāvabhāṣatām ॥7-76-17॥
[यत् (yat) - if; अस्य (asya) - his; समरे (samare) - in battle; गोप्ता (goptā) - protector; शक्रः (śakraḥ) - Indra; देवगणैः (devagaṇaiḥ) - with the hosts of gods; सह (saha) - with; तथापि (tathāpi) - still; एनम् (enam) - him; हनिष्याव (haniṣyāva) - we shall slay; इति (iti) - thus; कृष्णौ (kṛṣṇau) - Krishna and Arjuna; अबाषताम् (abhāṣatām) - spoke;]
(If his protector in battle is Indra with the hosts of gods, still we shall slay him, thus spoke Krishna and Arjuna.)
Krishna and Arjuna declared that even if Indra, along with the hosts of gods, protects him in battle, they would still slay him.
इति कृष्णौ महाबाहू मिथः कथयतां तदा। सिन्धुराजमवेक्षन्तौ तत्पुत्रास्तव शुश्रुवुः ॥७-७६-१८॥
iti kṛṣṇau mahābāhū mithaḥ kathayatāṃ tadā। sindhurājamavekṣantau tatputrāstava śuśruvuḥ ॥7-76-18॥
[इति (iti) - thus; कृष्णौ (kṛṣṇau) - Krishna (dual); महाबाहू (mahābāhū) - mighty-armed (dual); मिथः (mithaḥ) - mutually; कथयतां (kathayatāṃ) - speaking; तदा (tadā) - then; सिन्धुराजम् (sindhurājam) - Sindhu king; अवेक्षन्तौ (avekṣantau) - looking at (dual); तत्पुत्राः (tatputrāḥ) - his sons; तव (tava) - your; शुश्रुवुः (śuśruvuḥ) - heard;]
(Thus, the two mighty-armed Krishnas were speaking mutually then, looking at the Sindhu king, your sons heard.)
At that time, the two mighty-armed Krishnas were conversing with each other, and while looking at the Sindhu king, your sons overheard them.
अतीत्य मरुधन्वेव प्रयान्तौ तृषितौ गजौ। पीत्वा वारि समाश्वस्तौ तथैवास्तामरिंदमौ ॥७-७६-१९॥
atītya marudhanveva prayāntau tṛṣitau gajau। pītvā vāri samāśvastau tathaivāstāmariṃdamau ॥7-76-19॥
[अतीत्य (atītya) - having crossed; मरुधन्वा (marudhanvā) - desert; इव (iva) - like; प्रयान्तौ (prayāntau) - proceeding; तृषितौ (tṛṣitau) - thirsty; गजौ (gajau) - elephants; पीत्वा (pītvā) - having drunk; वारि (vāri) - water; समाश्वस्तौ (samāśvastau) - refreshed; तथैव (tathaiva) - thus; आस्ताम् (āstām) - remained; अरिंदमौ (ariṃdamau) - subduers of enemies;]
(Having crossed the desert like thirsty elephants, having drunk water, the subduers of enemies remained thus refreshed.)
The subduers of enemies, like thirsty elephants crossing a desert, drank water and remained refreshed.
व्याघ्रसिंहगजाकीर्णानतिक्रम्येव पर्वतान्। अदृश्येतां महाबाहू यथा मृत्युजरातिगौ ॥७-७६-२०॥
vyāghrasiṃhagajākīrṇānatikramyeva parvatān। adṛśyetāṃ mahābāhū yathā mṛtyujarātigau ॥7-76-20॥
[व्याघ्र (vyāghra) - tiger; सिंह (siṃha) - lion; गज (gaja) - elephant; आकीर्ण (ākīrṇa) - filled; अनतिक्रम्य (anatikramya) - not surpassing; एव (eva) - indeed; पर्वतान् (parvatān) - mountains; अदृश्येतां (adṛśyetāṃ) - became invisible; महाबाहू (mahābāhū) - mighty-armed; यथा (yathā) - as; मृत्यु (mṛtyu) - death; जरा (jarā) - old age; अतिगौ (atigau) - transcended;]
(The mighty-armed ones became invisible, just as death and old age are transcended, without surpassing the mountains filled with tigers, lions, and elephants.)
The mighty-armed heroes vanished from sight, just as one transcends death and old age, without crossing the mountains teeming with tigers, lions, and elephants.
तथा हि मुखवर्णोऽयमनयोरिति मेनिरे। तावका दृश्य मुक्तौ तौ विक्रोशन्ति स्म सर्वतः ॥७-७६-२१॥
tathā hi mukhavarṇo'yamanayoriti menire। tāvakā dṛśya muktau tau vikrośanti sma sarvataḥ ॥7-76-21॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; हि (hi) - indeed; मुखवर्णः (mukhavarṇaḥ) - complexion; अयम् (ayam) - this; अनयोः (anayoḥ) - of these two; इति (iti) - thus; मेनिरे (menire) - they thought; तावका (tāvakā) - your people; दृश्य (dṛśya) - visible; मुक्तौ (muktau) - released; तौ (tau) - they; विक्रोशन्ति (vikrośanti) - cry out; स्म (sma) - indeed; सर्वतः (sarvataḥ) - everywhere;]
(Thus indeed, they thought, 'This is the complexion of these two.' Your people, seeing them released, cried out everywhere.)

द्रोणादाशीविषाकाराज्ज्वलितादिव पावकात्। अन्येभ्यः पार्थिवेभ्यश्च भास्वन्ताविव भास्करौ ॥७-७६-२२॥

(From Drona, like a blazing venomous snake, like from fire; and from other kings, shining like suns.)
