कथं चैषां तथा युद्धे धृतिरासीन्मुमूर्षताम्। शैनेयचरितं दृष्ट्वा सदृशं सव्यसाचिनः ॥७-९७-२॥
kathaṁ caiṣāṁ tathā yuddhe dhṛtirāsīnmumūrṣatām। śaineyacaritaṁ dṛṣṭvā sadṛśaṁ savyasācinaḥ ॥7-97-2॥

(How was the courage of these in battle, of those desiring to die, having seen the deeds of Śaineya, equal to Arjuna?)
How did these warriors, desiring to die, maintain their courage in battle after witnessing the deeds of Śaineya, comparable to those of Arjuna?
किं नु वक्ष्यन्ति ते क्षात्रं सैन्यमध्ये पराजिताः। कथं च सात्यकिर्युद्धे व्यतिक्रान्तो महायशाः ॥७-९७-३॥

(What indeed will they say, the warriors, defeated in the midst of the army? And how was Satyaki, the greatly renowned, overcome in battle?)

कथं च मम पुत्राणां जीवतां तत्र सञ्जय। शैनेयोऽभिययौ युद्धे तन्ममाचक्ष्व तत्त्वतः ॥७-९७-४॥
kathaṁ ca mama putrāṇāṁ jīvatāṁ tatra sañjaya। śaineyo'bhiyayau yuddhe tanmamācakṣva tattvataḥ ॥7-97-4॥

Sanjaya, tell me truly how my sons are faring there, and how Satyaki advanced in the battle.
अत्यद्भुतमिदं तात त्वत्सकाशाच्छृणोम्यहम्। एकस्य बहुभिर्युद्धं शत्रुभिर्वै महारथैः ॥७-९७-५॥
atyadbhutamidaṁ tāta tvatsakāśācchṛṇomyaham। ekasya bahubhiryuddhaṁ śatrubhirvai mahārathaiḥ ॥7-97-5॥

विपरीतमहं मन्ये मन्दभाग्यान्सुतान्प्रति। यत्रावध्यन्त समरे सात्वतेन महात्मना ॥७-९७-६॥
viparītamahaṃ manye mandabhāgyānsutānprati। yatrāvadhyanta samare sātvaten mahātmanā ॥7-97-6॥

I believe that it is unfortunate for the sons, as they were slain in battle by the noble Sātvata.
एकस्य हि न पर्याप्तं मत्सैन्यं तस्य सञ्जय। क्रुद्धस्य युयुधानस्य सर्वे तिष्ठन्तु पाण्डवाः ॥७-९७-७॥

(Indeed, my army is not sufficient for one, O Sanjaya. Let all the Pandavas stand against the angry Yuyudhana.)
Sanjaya, my army is not enough to face the wrath of Yuyudhana alone. Let all the Pandavas stand together.
निर्जित्य समरे द्रोणं कृतिनं युद्धदुर्मदम्। यथा पशुगणान्सिंहस्तद्वद्धन्ता सुतान्मम ॥७-९७-८॥
nirjitya samare droṇaṃ kṛtinaṃ yuddhadurmadam। yathā paśugaṇānsiṃhastadvaddhantā sutānmama ॥7-97-8॥

(Having conquered Droṇa, the skilled one, arrogant in war, in battle, just as a lion slays herds of animals, in that manner, the slayer (will slay) my sons.)
Having defeated the skilled and arrogant Droṇa in battle, just as a lion slays herds of animals, the slayer will similarly slay my sons.
कृतवर्मादिभिः शूरैर्यत्तैर्बहुभिराहवे। युयुधानो न शकितो हन्तुं यः पुरुषर्षभः ॥७-९७-९॥
kṛtavarmādibhiḥ śūrairyattairbahubhirāhave। yuyudhāno na śakito hantuṃ yaḥ puruṣarṣabhaḥ ॥7-97-9॥
[कृतवर्मादिभिः (kṛtavarmādibhiḥ) - by Kṛtavarmā and others; शूरैः (śūraiḥ) - by heroes; यत्तैः (yattaiḥ) - by those who are active; बहुभिः (bahubhiḥ) - by many; आहवे (āhave) - in battle; युयुधानः (yuyudhānaḥ) - Yuyudhāna; न (na) - not; शकितः (śakitaḥ) - was able; हन्तुम् (hantum) - to kill; यः (yaḥ) - who; पुरुषर्षभः (puruṣarṣabhaḥ) - the best among men;]
(By Kṛtavarmā and others, by heroes, by those who are active, by many in battle, Yuyudhāna was not able to kill him, who is the best among men.)
Yuyudhāna, despite being accompanied by many heroes like Kṛtavarmā in battle, was unable to kill him, the best among men.
नैतदीदृशकं युद्धं कृतवांस्तत्र फल्गुनः। यादृशं कृतवान्युद्धं शिनेर्नप्ता महायशाः ॥७-९७-१०॥
naitadīdṛśakaṃ yuddhaṃ kṛtavāṃstatra phalgunaḥ। yādṛśaṃ kṛtavānyuddhaṃ śinernaptā mahāyaśāḥ ॥7-97-10॥
[न (na) - not; एतद् (etad) - this; ईदृशकं (īdṛśakaṃ) - such; युद्धं (yuddhaṃ) - battle; कृतवान् (kṛtavān) - did; तत्र (tatra) - there; फल्गुनः (phalgunaḥ) - Arjuna; यादृशं (yādṛśaṃ) - as; कृतवान् (kṛtavān) - did; युद्धं (yuddhaṃ) - battle; शिनः (śinaḥ) - of Shini; नप्ता (naptā) - grandson; महायशाः (mahāyaśāḥ) - greatly renowned;]
(Arjuna did not fight such a battle there as the greatly renowned grandson of Shini did.)
Arjuna did not engage in a battle there like the one fought by the illustrious grandson of Shini.

तव दुर्मन्त्रिते राजन्दुर्योधनकृतेन च। शृणुष्वावहितो भूत्वा यत्ते वक्ष्यामि भारत ॥७-९७-११॥
tava durmantrite rājan duryodhanakṛtena ca। śṛṇuṣvāvahito bhūtvā yatte vakṣyāmi bhārata ॥7-97-11॥
[तव (tava) - your; दुर्मन्त्रिते (durmantrite) - ill-advised; राजन् (rājan) - O king; दुर्योधनकृतेन (duryodhanakṛtena) - by Duryodhana's doing; च (ca) - and; शृणुष्व (śṛṇuṣva) - listen; आवहितः (āvahitaḥ) - attentively; भूत्वा (bhūtvā) - having become; यत् (yat) - what; ते (te) - to you; वक्ष्यामि (vakṣyāmi) - I will say; भारत (bhārata) - O descendant of Bharata;]
(O king, due to your ill-advised actions and those of Duryodhana, listen attentively to what I will say to you, O descendant of Bharata.)

ते पुनः संन्यवर्तन्त कृत्वा संशप्तकान्मिथः। परां युद्धे मतिं कृत्वा पुत्रस्य तव शासनात् ॥७-९७-१२॥

अवधीच्च रथानीकं द्विरदानां च तद्बलम्। सादिनश्चैव तान्सर्वान्दस्यूनपि च सर्वशः ॥७-९७-२०॥

tataḥ śabdaḥ samabhavat tava sainyasya māriṣa। mādhavenārdyamānasya sāgarasyeva dāruṇaḥ ॥7-97-44॥

(Then, O great one, a terrible sound arose from your army, like the ocean being tormented by Mādhava.)

तं शब्दं तुमुलं श्रुत्वा द्रोणो यन्तारमब्रवीत्। एष सूत रणे क्रुद्धः सात्वतानां महारथः ॥७-९७-४५॥

(Having heard that loud sound, Droṇa said to the charioteer: "This is the great warrior of the Sātvatas, angry in battle.")
Upon hearing the tumultuous sound, Droṇa addressed his charioteer, saying: "This is the mighty warrior of the Sātvatas, enraged in the battlefield."
दारयन्बहुधा सैन्यं रणे चरति कालवत्। यत्रैष शब्दस्तुमुलस्तत्र सूत रथं नय ॥७-९७-४६॥

(Tearing apart the army in many ways, he moves in battle like time. Where this tumultuous sound is, there, charioteer, lead the chariot.)

पाषाणयोधिभिर्नूनं युयुधानः समागतः। तथा हि रथिनः सर्वे ह्रियन्ते विद्रुतैर्हयैः ॥७-९७-४७॥
pāṣāṇayodhibhirnūnaṃ yuyudhānaḥ samāgataḥ। tathā hi rathinaḥ sarve hriyante vidrutairhayaiḥ ॥7-97-47॥

(Certainly, Yuyudhana has arrived with stone warriors. Thus indeed, all the charioteers are being carried away by fleeing horses.)

विशस्त्रकवचा रुग्णास्तत्र तत्र पतन्ति च। न शक्नुवन्ति यन्तारः संयन्तुं तुमुले हयान् ॥७-९७-४८॥
viśastrakavacā rugṇāstatra tatra patanti ca। na śaknuvanti yantāraḥ saṃyantuṃ tumule hayān ॥7-97-48॥

āyuṣmandravate sainyaṃ kauraveyaṃ samantataḥ। paśya yodhānraṇe bhinnāndhāvamānāṃstatastataḥ ॥7-97-50॥

अत्र कार्यं समाधत्स्व प्राप्तकालमरिंदम। स्थाने वा गमने वापि दूरं यातश्च सात्यकिः ॥७-९७-५२॥

(Thus, while he, Bhāradvāja, was speaking, O gentle one, Śaineya appeared, slaying various chariots.)
As Bhāradvāja was speaking in this manner, O gentle one, Śaineya appeared, destroying various chariots.
ते वध्यमानाः समरे युयुधानेन तावकाः। युयुधानरथं त्यक्त्वा द्रोणानीकाय दुद्रुवुः ॥७-९७-५४॥
te vadhyamānāḥ samare yuyudhānena tāvakāḥ। yuyudhānarathaṃ tyaktvā droṇānīkāya dudruvuḥ ॥7-97-54॥
[ते (te) - they; वध्यमानाः (vadhyamānāḥ) - being slain; समरे (samare) - in battle; युयुधानेन (yuyudhānena) - by Yuyudhana; तावकाः (tāvakāḥ) - your men; युयुधानरथं (yuyudhānaratham) - Yuyudhana's chariot; त्यक्त्वा (tyaktvā) - abandoning; द्रोणानीकाय (droṇānīkāya) - to Drona's army; दुद्रुवुः (dudruvuḥ) - they ran;]
(They, being slain in battle by Yuyudhana, your men, abandoning Yuyudhana's chariot, ran to Drona's army.)
As they were being slaughtered in battle by Yuyudhana, your soldiers abandoned Yuyudhana's chariot and fled towards Drona's army.
यैस्तु दुःशासनः सार्धं रथैः पूर्वं न्यवर्तत। ते भीतास्त्वभ्यधावन्त सर्वे द्रोणरथं प्रति ॥७-९७-५५॥
yaistu duḥśāsanaḥ sārdhaṃ rathaiḥ pūrvaṃ nyavartata। te bhītāstvabhyadhāvanta sarve droṇarathaṃ prati ॥7-97-55॥
