daivameva paraṃ manye dhikpauruṣamanarthakam। yatrādhirathirāyasto nātaratpāṇḍavaṃ raṇe ॥7-110-1॥
[दैवम् (daivam) - fate; एव (eva) - indeed; परम् (param) - supreme; मन्ये (manye) - I think; धिक् (dhik) - shame; पौरुषम् (pauruṣam) - manliness; अनर्थकम् (anarthakam) - useless; यत्र (yatra) - where; अधिरथिः (adhirathiḥ) - Adhiratha; आयस्तः (āyastaḥ) - was exerted; न (na) - not; अतरत् (atarat) - overcame; पाण्डवम् (pāṇḍavam) - Pāṇḍava; रणे (raṇe) - in battle;]
(I think fate is indeed supreme; shame on manliness, it is useless; where Adhiratha was exerted, he did not overcome the Pāṇḍava in battle.)
I believe that fate is supreme; manliness is useless and shameful, as even when Adhiratha exerted himself, he could not defeat the Pāṇḍava in battle.
कर्णः पार्थान्सगोविन्दाञ्जेतुमुत्सहते रणे। न च कर्णसमं योधं लोके पश्यामि कञ्चन ॥ इति दुर्योधनस्याहमश्रौषं जल्पतो मुहुः ॥७-११०-२॥

(Karna endeavors to conquer the sons of Pritha with Govinda in battle. And I do not see any warrior in the world equal to Karna. Thus, I heard Duryodhana speaking repeatedly.)

कर्णो हि बलवाञ्शूरो दृढधन्वा जितक्लमः। इति मामब्रवीत्सूत मन्दो दुर्योधनः पुरा ॥७-११०-३॥

(Alas, only Durmukha, unskilled in battles, was caused to enter the fire like a deluded moth.)
Alas, Durmukha, who was unskilled in battles, was led into the fire like a moth drawn to a flame, in his delusion.
अश्वत्थामा मद्रराजः कृपः कर्णश्च सङ्गताः। न शक्ताः प्रमुखे स्थातुं नूनं भीमस्य सञ्जय ॥७-११०-७॥
aśvatthāmā madrarājaḥ kṛpaḥ karṇaśca saṅgatāḥ। na śaktāḥ pramukhe sthātuṃ nūnaṃ bhīmasya sañjaya ॥7-110-7॥
[अश्वत्थामा (aśvatthāmā) - Ashwatthama; मद्रराजः (madrarājaḥ) - king of Madra; कृपः (kṛpaḥ) - Kripa; कर्णः (karṇaḥ) - Karna; च (ca) - and; सङ्गताः (saṅgatāḥ) - assembled; न (na) - not; शक्ताः (śaktāḥ) - capable; प्रमुखे (pramukhe) - in front; स्थातुं (sthātuṃ) - to stand; नूनं (nūnaṃ) - indeed; भीमस्य (bhīmasya) - of Bhima; सञ्जय (sañjaya) - Sanjaya;]
(Ashwatthama, the king of Madra, Kripa, and Karna are assembled. They are not capable of standing in front of Bhima, indeed, Sanjaya.)

तेऽपि चास्य महाघोरं बलं नागायुतोपमम्। जानन्तो व्यवसायं च क्रूरं मारुततेजसः ॥७-११०-८॥
te'pi cāsya mahāghoraṃ balaṃ nāgāyutopamam। jānanto vyavasāyaṃ ca krūraṃ mārutatejasaḥ ॥7-110-8॥

(For what purpose will those who know the strength and vigor anger the one like Yama, the ender of time, in battle?)
Why would those who understand strength and valor provoke someone as formidable as Yama, the god of death, in battle?
कर्णस्त्वेको महाबाहुः स्वबाहुबलमाश्रितः। भीमसेनमनादृत्य रणेऽयुध्यत सूतजः ॥७-११०-१०॥
karṇastveko mahābāhuḥ svabāhubalamāśritaḥ। bhīmasenamanādṛtya raṇe'yudhyata sūtajaḥ ॥7-110-10॥

(Karna, mighty-armed and alone, relying on his own strength of arms, fought in battle disregarding Bhimasena, the son of a charioteer.)

योऽजयत्समरे कर्णं पुरंदर इवासुरम्। न स पाण्डुसुतो जेतुं शक्यः केनचिदाहवे ॥७-११०-११॥
yo'jayatsamare karṇaṃ puraṃdara ivāsuram। na sa pāṇḍusuto jetuṃ śakyaḥ kenacidāhave ॥7-110-11॥

(He who conquered Karṇa in battle, like Indra (conquered) a demon, that son of Pandu cannot be conquered by anyone in battle.)

द्रोणं यः सम्प्रमथ्यैकः प्रविष्टो मम वाहिनीम्। भीमो धनञ्जयान्वेषी कस्तमर्छेज्जिजीविषुः ॥७-११०-१२॥
droṇaṃ yaḥ sampramathyaikaḥ praviṣṭo mama vāhinīm। bhīmo dhanañjayānveṣī kastamarchejjijīviṣuḥ ॥7-110-12॥

Who, having single-handedly crushed Drona and entered my army, is Bhima, seeking Dhananjaya. Who would dare to honor him and still wish to live?
को हि सञ्जय भीमस्य स्थातुमुत्सहतेऽग्रतः। उद्यताशनिवज्रस्य महेन्द्रस्येव दानवः ॥७-११०-१३॥

(Who indeed, Sanjaya, dares to stand in front of Bhima, like a demon in front of Mahendra with a raised thunderbolt?)
Sanjaya, who indeed has the courage to face Bhima, just as a demon would dare to stand before Mahendra wielding his thunderbolt?
प्रेतराजपुरं प्राप्य निवर्तेतापि मानवः। न भीमसेनं सम्प्राप्य निवर्तेत कदाचन ॥७-११०-१४॥
pretarājapuraṃ prāpya nivartetāpi mānavaḥ। na bhīmasenaṃ samprāpya nivarteta kadācana ॥7-110-14॥
[प्रेतराजपुरम् (pretarājapuram) - city of the king of the dead; प्राप्य (prāpya) - having reached; निवर्तेत (nivarteta) - would return; अपि (api) - even; मानवः (mānavaḥ) - a man; न (na) - not; भीमसेनम् (bhīmasenam) - Bhimasena; सम्प्राप्य (samprāpya) - having reached; निवर्तेत (nivarteta) - would return; कदाचन (kadācana) - ever;]
(A man would even return after reaching the city of the king of the dead; but never would he return after reaching Bhimasena.)
A man might return after reaching the city of the king of the dead, but he would never return after encountering Bhimasena.
पतङ्गा इव वह्निं ते प्राविशन्नल्पचेतसः। ये भीमसेनं सङ्क्रुद्धमभ्यधावन्विमोहिताः ॥७-११०-१५॥
pataṅgā iva vahniṃ te prāviśannalpacetasaḥ। ye bhīmasenaṃ saṅkruddhamabhyadhāvanvimohitāḥ ॥7-110-15॥
[पतङ्गाः (pataṅgāḥ) - moths; इव (iva) - like; वह्निम् (vahnim) - fire; ते (te) - they; प्राविशन् (prāviśan) - entered; अल्पचेतसः (alpacetasaḥ) - of little intelligence; ये (ye) - who; भीमसेनम् (bhīmasenam) - Bhimasena; सङ्क्रुद्धम् (saṅkruddham) - enraged; अभ्यधावन् (abhyadhāvan) - rushed at; विमोहिताः (vimohitāḥ) - deluded;]
(Like moths into a fire, those of little intelligence entered. Who rushed at the enraged Bhimasena, deluded.)
Those of little intelligence, like moths drawn to a flame, rushed at the enraged Bhimasena, only to meet their doom, deluded by their own folly.
यत्तत्सभायां भीमेन मम पुत्रवधाश्रयम्। शप्तं संरम्भिणोग्रेण कुरूणां शृण्वतां तदा ॥७-११०-१६॥
yattatsabhāyāṃ bhīmena mama putravadhāśrayam। śaptaṃ saṃrambhiṇogreṇa kurūṇāṃ śṛṇvatāṃ tadā ॥7-110-16॥
[यत् (yat) - that; तत् (tat) - that; सभायाम् (sabhāyām) - in the assembly; भीमेन (bhīmena) - by Bhima; मम (mama) - my; पुत्र (putra) - son; वध (vadha) - killing; आश्रयम् (āśrayam) - resort; शप्तम् (śaptam) - cursed; संरम्भिणा (saṃrambhiṇā) - angry; उग्रेण (ugreṇa) - fierce; कुरूणाम् (kurūṇām) - of the Kurus; शृण्वताम् (śṛṇvatām) - hearing; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(That which in the assembly by Bhima my son's killing resort cursed by angry fierce of the Kurus hearing then.)
In the assembly, Bhima, in his fierce anger, cursed the resort to the killing of my son, while the Kurus were listening.
तन्नूनमभिसञ्चिन्त्य दृष्ट्वा कर्णं च निर्जितम्। दुःशासनः सह भ्रात्रा भयाद्भीमादुपारमत् ॥७-११०-१७॥
tannūnam abhisañcintya dṛṣṭvā karṇaṃ ca nirjitam। duḥśāsanaḥ saha bhrātrā bhayādbhīmādupāramat ॥7-110-17॥
[तत् (tat) - that; नूनम् (nūnam) - certainly; अभिसञ्चिन्त्य (abhisañcintya) - having considered; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; कर्णम् (karṇam) - Karna; च (ca) - and; निर्जितम् (nirjitam) - defeated; दुःशासनः (duḥśāsanaḥ) - Duhshasana; सह (saha) - with; भ्रात्रा (bhrātrā) - brother; भयात् (bhayāt) - out of fear; भीमात् (bhīmāt) - from Bhima; उपारमत् (upāramat) - ceased;]
(Certainly having considered that and having seen Karna defeated, Duhshasana, with his brother, ceased out of fear from Bhima.)
Duhshasana, realizing the situation and seeing Karna defeated, withdrew with his brother out of fear of Bhima.
यश्च सञ्जय दुर्बुद्धिरब्रवीत्समितौ मुहुः। कर्णो दुःशासनोऽहं च जेष्यामो युधि पाण्डवान् ॥७-११०-१८॥
yaśca sañjaya durbuddhirabravītsamitau muhuḥ। karṇo duḥśāsano'haṃ ca jeṣyāmo yudhi pāṇḍavān ॥7-110-18॥
[यः (yaḥ) - who; च (ca) - and; सञ्जय (sañjaya) - Sanjaya; दुर्बुद्धिः (durbuddhiḥ) - evil-minded; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; समितौ (samitau) - in the assembly; मुहुः (muhuḥ) - repeatedly; कर्णः (karṇaḥ) - Karna; दुःशासनः (duḥśāsanaḥ) - Duhshasana; अहम् (aham) - I; च (ca) - and; जेष्यामः (jeṣyāmaḥ) - will conquer; युधि (yudhi) - in battle; पाण्डवान् (pāṇḍavān) - the Pandavas;]
(And who, O Sanjaya, the evil-minded repeatedly said in the assembly: Karna, Duhshasana, and I will conquer the Pandavas in battle.)
Sanjaya, the evil-minded one, repeatedly declared in the assembly that Karna, Duhshasana, and he would defeat the Pandavas in battle.
स नूनं विरथं दृष्ट्वा कर्णं भीमेन निर्जितम्। प्रत्याख्यानाच्च कृष्णस्य भृशं तप्यति सञ्जय ॥७-११०-१९॥
sa nūnaṃ virathaṃ dṛṣṭvā karṇaṃ bhīmena nirjitam। pratyākhyānācca kṛṣṇasya bhṛśaṃ tapyati sañjaya ॥7-110-19॥
[स (sa) - he; नूनम् (nūnam) - certainly; विरथम् (viratham) - chariotless; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; कर्णम् (karṇam) - Karna; भीमेन (bhīmena) - by Bhima; निर्जितम् (nirjitam) - defeated; प्रत्याख्यानात् (pratyākhyānāt) - due to rejection; च (ca) - and; कृष्णस्य (kṛṣṇasya) - of Krishna; भृशम् (bhṛśam) - greatly; तप्यति (tapyati) - feels pain; सञ्जय (sañjaya) - Sanjaya;]
(He, having certainly seen Karna chariotless and defeated by Bhima, and due to the rejection of Krishna, greatly feels pain, O Sanjaya.)
Sanjaya, he is greatly pained after seeing Karna without his chariot, defeated by Bhima, and also due to Krishna's rejection.
दृष्ट्वा भ्रातॄन्हतान्युद्धे भीमसेनेन दंशितान्। आत्मापराधात्सुमहन्नूनं तप्यति पुत्रकः ॥७-११०-२०॥
dṛṣṭvā bhrātṝn hatān yuddhe bhīmasenena daṃśitān। ātmāparādhāt sumahan nūnaṃ tapyati putrakaḥ ॥7-110-20॥
[दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; भ्रातॄन् (bhrātṝn) - brothers; हतान् (hatān) - slain; युद्धे (yuddhe) - in battle; भीमसेनेन (bhīmasenena) - by Bhimasena; दंशितान् (daṃśitān) - pierced; आत्मा (ātmā) - self; अपराधात् (aparādhāt) - due to fault; सुमहत् (sumahat) - great; नूनम् (nūnam) - certainly; तप्यति (tapyati) - is tormented; पुत्रकः (putrakaḥ) - the son;]
(Having seen the brothers slain in battle, pierced by Bhimasena, the son is certainly tormented due to his own great fault.)
Upon witnessing his brothers killed in battle by Bhimasena, the son is deeply tormented, realizing it is due to his own significant mistake.
को हि जीवितमन्विच्छन्प्रतीपं पाण्डवं व्रजेत्। भीमं भीमायुधं क्रुद्धं साक्षात्कालमिव स्थितम् ॥७-११०-२१॥
ko hi jīvitamanvicchanpratīpaṃ pāṇḍavaṃ vrajet। bhīmaṃ bhīmāyudhaṃ kruddhaṃ sākṣātkālamiva sthitam ॥7-110-21॥

(Who indeed, desiring life, would go against the Pāṇḍava Bhīma, who is angry and standing like death itself with terrible weapons?)
Who would dare to oppose the Pāṇḍava Bhīma, who stands angrily with terrible weapons, resembling death itself, if they wish to live?
वडवामुखमध्यस्थो मुच्येतापि हि मानवः। न भीममुखसम्प्राप्तो मुच्येतेति मतिर्मम ॥७-११०-२२॥

(But that you criticize the warriors fighting according to their strength. Here I will describe to you how the battle took place.)

दृष्ट्वा कर्णं तु पुत्रास्ते भीमसेनपराजितम्। नामृष्यन्त महेष्वासाः सोदर्याः पञ्च मारिष ॥७-११०-२८॥
