tamāpatantaṃ samprekṣya sātvataṃ yuddhadurmadam। krodhādbhūriśravā rājansahasā samupādravat ॥7-117-1॥

तमब्रवीन्महाबाहुः कौरव्यः शिनिपुङ्गवम्। अद्य प्राप्तोऽसि दिष्ट्या मे चक्षुर्विषयमित्युत ॥७-११७-२॥
tamabravīnmahābāhuḥ kauravyaḥ śinipuṅgavam। adya prāpto'si diṣṭyā me cakṣurviṣayamityuta ॥7-117-2॥

(The mighty-armed descendant of Kuru said to him, the bull among the Shinis, "Today, by fortune, you have arrived within the range of my sight, indeed.")
The mighty-armed Kuru prince said to the best of the Shinis, "Today, by good fortune, you have come into my view."
चिराभिलषितं काममद्य प्राप्स्यामि संयुगे। न हि मे मोक्ष्यसे जीवन्यदि नोत्सृजसे रणम् ॥७-११७-३॥
cirābhilaṣitaṃ kāmam adya prāpsyāmi saṃyuge। na hi me mokṣyase jīvanyadi notsṛjase raṇam ॥7-117-3॥

(Today, I shall obtain the long-desired wish in battle. Indeed, you will not be released alive by me if you do not abandon the battle.)

अद्य त्वां समरे हत्वा नित्यं शूराभिमानिनम्। नन्दयिष्यामि दाशार्ह कुरुराजं सुयोधनम् ॥७-११७-४॥
adya tvāṃ samare hatvā nityaṃ śūrābhimāninam। nandayiṣyāmi dāśārha kururājaṃ suyodhanam ॥7-117-4॥

अद्य मद्बाणनिर्दग्धं पतितं धरणीतले। द्रक्ष्यतस्त्वां रणे वीरौ सहितौ केशवार्जुनौ ॥७-११७-५॥
adya madbāṇanirdagdhaṃ patitaṃ dharaṇītale। drakṣyatastvāṃ raṇe vīrau sahitau keśavārjunau ॥7-117-5॥

अद्य धर्मसुतो राजा श्रुत्वा त्वां निहतं मया। सव्रीडो भविता सद्यो येनासीह प्रवेशितः ॥७-११७-६॥
adya dharmasuto rājā śrutvā tvāṃ nihataṃ mayā। savrīḍo bhavitā sadyo yenāsīha praveśitaḥ ॥7-117-6॥

Today, King Yudhishthira, the son of Dharma, upon hearing that you have been slain by me, will immediately feel ashamed, as it was he who allowed you to enter here.
अद्य मे विक्रमं पार्थो विज्ञास्यति धनञ्जयः। त्वयि भूमौ विनिहते शयाने रुधिरोक्षिते ॥७-११७-७॥
adya me vikramaṁ pārtho vijñāsyati dhanañjayaḥ। tvayi bhūmau vinihate śayāne rudhirokṣite ॥7-117-7॥

Today, Arjuna, also known as Dhananjaya, will witness my strength when you are defeated and lying on the battlefield, drenched in blood.
चिराभिलषितो ह्यद्य त्वया सह समागमः। पुरा देवासुरे युद्धे शक्रस्य बलिना यथा ॥७-११७-८॥
cirābhilaṣito hyadya tvayā saha samāgamaḥ। purā devāsure yuddhe śakrasya balinā yathā ॥7-117-8॥

(Indeed, today the long-desired meeting with you has occurred, as it was formerly in the battle between gods and demons by the strong Indra.)
Today, the long-awaited meeting with you has finally happened, just as it once did in the ancient battle between the gods and demons, led by the mighty Indra.
अद्य युद्धं महाघोरं तव दास्यामि सात्वत। ततो ज्ञास्यसि तत्त्वेन मद्वीर्यबलपौरुषम् ॥७-११७-९॥
adya yuddhaṁ mahāghoraṁ tava dāsyāmi sātvata। tato jñāsyasi tattvena madvīryabalapauruṣam ॥7-117-9॥

(Today, I will give you a very terrible battle, O Sātvata. Then you will truly know my heroism, strength, and prowess.)
"Today, I will engage you in a very fierce battle, O Sātvata. Then you will truly understand my heroism, strength, and prowess."
अद्य संयमनीं याता मया त्वं निहतो रणे। यथा रामानुजेनाजौ रावणिर्लक्ष्मणेन वै ॥७-११७-१०॥
adya saṁyamanīṁ yātā mayā tvaṁ nihato raṇe। yathā rāmānujenājau rāvaṇirlakṣmaṇena vai ॥7-117-10॥

अद्य कृष्णश्च पार्थश्च धर्मराजश्च माधव। हते त्वयि निरुत्साहा रणं त्यक्ष्यन्त्यसंशयम् ॥७-११७-११॥
adya kṛṣṇaśca pārthaśca dharmarājaśca mādhava। hate tvayi nirutsāhā raṇaṃ tyakṣyantyasaṃśayam ॥7-117-11॥

अद्य तेऽपचितिं कृत्वा शितैर्माधव सायकैः। तत्स्त्रियो नन्दयिष्यामि ये त्वया निहता रणे ॥७-११७-१२॥
adya te'pacitiṁ kṛtvā śitairmādhava sāyakaiḥ। tatstriyo nandayiṣyāmi ye tvayā nihatā raṇe ॥7-117-12॥

(Today, having honored you with sharp arrows, O Madhava, I will please those women whose men were killed by you in battle.)
Today, O Madhava, I will honor you with sharp arrows and bring joy to the women whose loved ones were slain by you in battle.
चक्षुर्विषयसम्प्राप्तो न त्वं माधव मोक्ष्यसे। सिंहस्य विषयं प्राप्तो यथा क्षुद्रमृगस्तथा ॥७-११७-१३॥
cakṣur-viṣaya-samprāpto na tvaṃ mādhava mokṣyase। siṃhasya viṣayaṃ prāpto yathā kṣudra-mṛgas-tathā ॥7-117-13॥
[चक्षुः (cakṣuḥ) - eye; विषय (viṣaya) - range; सम्प्राप्तः (samprāptaḥ) - reached; न (na) - not; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; माधव (mādhava) - Madhava; मोक्ष्यसे (mokṣyase) - will escape; सिंहस्य (siṃhasya) - of the lion; विषयम् (viṣayam) - range; प्राप्तः (prāptaḥ) - reached; यथा (yathā) - as; क्षुद्रमृगः (kṣudra-mṛgaḥ) - small animal; तथा (tathā) - so;]
(You have reached the range of the eye, Madhava, you will not escape. As a small animal reaches the range of the lion, so you.)
Madhava, you have come into my sight and you will not escape, just as a small animal does not escape when it comes into the sight of a lion.
युयुधानस्तु तं राजन्प्रत्युवाच हसन्निव। कौरवेय न सन्त्रासो विद्यते मम संयुगे ॥७-११७-१४॥
yuyudhānastu taṃ rājanpratyuvāca hasanniva। kauraveya na santrāso vidyate mama saṃyuge ॥7-117-14॥
[युयुधानः (yuyudhānaḥ) - Yuyudhana; तु (tu) - but; तं (taṃ) - him; राजन् (rājan) - O king; प्रत्युवाच (pratyuvāca) - replied; हसन् (hasan) - smiling; इव (iva) - as if; कौरवेय (kauraveya) - Kauraveya; न (na) - not; सन्त्रासः (santrāsaḥ) - fear; विद्यते (vidyate) - exists; मम (mama) - in me; संयुगे (saṃyuge) - in battle;]
(Yuyudhana, however, replied to him, O king, smiling as if: "Kauraveya, there is no fear in me in battle.")
Yuyudhana, with a smile, replied to the king, "Kauraveya, I have no fear in battle."
स मां निहन्यात्सङ्ग्रामे यो मां कुर्यान्निरायुधम्। समास्तु शाश्वतीर्हन्याद्यो मां हन्याद्धि संयुगे ॥७-११७-१५॥
sa māṃ nihanyātsaṅgrāme yo māṃ kuryānnirāyudham। samāstu śāśvatīr hanyādyo māṃ hanyāddhi saṃyuge ॥7-117-15॥
[स (sa) - he; माम् (mām) - me; निहन्यात् (nihanyāt) - should kill; सङ्ग्रामे (saṅgrāme) - in battle; यः (yaḥ) - who; माम् (mām) - me; कुर्यात् (kuryāt) - would make; निरायुधम् (nirāyudham) - unarmed; समाः (samāḥ) - years; तु (tu) - but; शाश्वतीः (śāśvatīḥ) - eternal; हन्यात् (hanyāt) - should kill; यः (yaḥ) - who; माम् (mām) - me; हन्यात् (hanyāt) - would kill; हि (hi) - indeed; संयुगे (saṃyuge) - in combat;]
(He should kill me in battle, who would make me unarmed. But eternal years should kill him who would indeed kill me in combat.)
"He who would render me unarmed in battle should kill me. But let eternal years take him who would indeed kill me in combat."
किं मृषोक्तेन बहुना कर्मणा तु समाचर। शारदस्येव मेघस्य गर्जितं निष्फलं हि ते ॥७-११७-१६॥
kiṁ mṛṣoktena bahunā karmaṇā tu samācara। śāradasyeva meghasya garjitaṁ niṣphalaṁ hi te ॥7-117-16॥
[किं (kiṁ) - what; मृषा-उक्तेन (mṛṣā-uktena) - false-speech; बहुना (bahunā) - much; कर्मणा (karmaṇā) - by action; तु (tu) - but; समाचर (samācara) - perform; शारदस्य (śāradasya) - of autumn; इव (iva) - like; मेघस्य (meghasya) - of cloud; गर्जितं (garjitaṁ) - thunder; निष्फलं (niṣphalaṁ) - fruitless; हि (hi) - indeed; ते (te) - your;]
(What is the use of much false speech? Perform actions instead. Like the thunder of autumn clouds, your words are indeed fruitless.)
Why indulge in much false speech? Instead, perform actions. Your words are as fruitless as the thunder of autumn clouds.
श्रुत्वैतद्गर्जितं वीर हास्यं हि मम जायते। चिरकालेप्सितं लोके युद्धमद्यास्तु कौरव ॥७-११७-१७॥
śrutvaitadgarjitaṃ vīra hāsyaṃ hi mama jāyate। cirakālepsitaṃ loke yuddhamadyāstu kaurava ॥7-117-17॥
[श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; एतत् (etat) - this; गर्जितं (garjitam) - roar; वीर (vīra) - hero; हास्यं (hāsyaṃ) - laughter; हि (hi) - indeed; मम (mama) - my; जायते (jāyate) - arises; चिर (cira) - long; कालेप्सितं (kālepsitaṃ) - desired; लोके (loke) - in the world; युद्धम् (yuddham) - battle; अद्य (adya) - today; अस्तु (astu) - let it be; कौरव (kaurava) - Kaurava;]
(Having heard this roar, O hero, indeed laughter arises in me. The long-desired battle in the world, let it be today, O Kaurava.)
Upon hearing this roar, O hero, I am filled with laughter. Let the long-awaited battle in the world commence today, O Kaurava.
त्वरते मे मतिस्तात त्वयि युद्धाभिकाङ्क्षिणि। नाहत्वा संनिवर्तिष्ये त्वामद्य पुरुषाधम ॥७-११७-१८॥
tvarate me matistāta tvayi yuddhābhikāṅkṣiṇi। nāhatvā saṃnivartiṣye tvāmadya puruṣādhama ॥7-117-18॥
[त्वरते (tvarate) - hastens; मे (me) - my; मतिः (matiḥ) - mind; तात (tāta) - O dear; त्वयि (tvayi) - in you; युद्ध (yuddha) - battle; अभिकाङ्क्षिणि (abhikāṅkṣiṇi) - desiring; न (na) - not; अहत्वा (ahatvā) - without killing; संनिवर्तिष्ये (saṃnivartiṣye) - I shall return; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; अद्य (adya) - today; पुरुषाधम (puruṣādhama) - O worst of men;]
(My mind hastens, O dear, in you desiring battle. I shall not return today without killing you, O worst of men.)
"O dear, my mind is eager for battle with you. Today, I will not return without defeating you, O worst of men."
अन्योन्यं तौ तदा वाग्भिस्तक्षन्तौ नरपुङ्गवौ। जिघांसू परमक्रुद्धावभिजघ्नतुराहवे ॥७-११७-१९॥
anyonyaṃ tau tadā vāgbhistakṣantau narapuṅgavau। jighāṃsū paramakruddhāvabhijaghnaturāhave ॥7-117-19॥
[अन्योन्यं (anyonyaṃ) - each other; तौ (tau) - those two; तदा (tadā) - then; वाग्भिः (vāgbhiḥ) - with words; तक्षन्तौ (takṣantau) - chiding; नरपुङ्गवौ (narapuṅgavau) - bulls among men; जिघांसू (jighāṃsū) - desiring to kill; परमक्रुद्धौ (paramakruddhau) - extremely enraged; अभिजघ्नतुः (abhijaghnatuḥ) - struck; आहवे (āhave) - in battle;]
(Those two bulls among men, chiding each other with words, extremely enraged and desiring to kill, struck in battle.)
The two warriors, like bulls among men, exchanged harsh words, driven by extreme rage and a desire to kill, and then engaged in battle.
समेतौ तौ नरव्याघ्रौ शुष्मिणौ स्पर्धिनौ रणे। द्विरदाविव सङ्क्रुद्धौ वाशितार्थे मदोत्कटौ ॥७-११७-२०॥
sametau tau naravyāghrau śuṣmiṇau spardhinau raṇe। dviradāviva saṅkruddhau vāśitārthe madotkaṭau ॥7-117-20॥
[समेतौ (sametau) - together; तौ (tau) - those two; नरव्याघ्रौ (naravyāghrau) - tiger among men; शुष्मिणौ (śuṣmiṇau) - powerful; स्पर्धिनौ (spardhinau) - competing; रणे (raṇe) - in battle; द्विरदौ (dviradau) - elephants; इव (iva) - like; सङ्क्रुद्धौ (saṅkruddhau) - enraged; वाशितार्थे (vāśitārthe) - for the sake of a female; मदोत्कटौ (madotkaṭau) - intoxicated;]
(Together those two tigers among men, powerful and competing in battle, like enraged elephants, intoxicated for the sake of a female.)
Together, those two mighty warriors, fierce as tigers among men, clashed in battle like enraged elephants, driven by the desire for a female, intoxicated with passion.
भूरिश्रवाः सात्यकिश्च ववर्षतुररिंदमौ। शरवर्षाणि भीमानि मेघाविव परस्परम् ॥७-११७-२१॥
bhūriśravāḥ sātyakiśca vavarṣaturariṃdamau। śaravarṣāṇi bhīmāni meghāviva parasparam ॥7-117-21॥

सौमदत्तिस्तु शैनेयं प्रच्छाद्येषुभिराशुगैः। जिघांसुर्भरतश्रेष्ठ विव्याध निशितैः शरैः ॥७-११७-२२॥
saumadattistu śaineyaṃ pracchādyeṣubhirāśugaiḥ। jighāṃsurbharataśreṣṭha vivyādha niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ ॥7-117-22॥

Upon hearing these words from Vāsudeva, the mighty-armed Pandava mentally honored Bhūriśravas during the battle.
विकर्षन्सात्वतश्रेष्ठं क्रीडमान इवाहवे। संहर्षयति मां भूयः कुरूणां कीर्तिवर्धनः ॥७-११७-५८॥

(Dragging the best of the Sātvatas, as if playing in battle, delights me again, the increaser of the Kurus' fame.)
The act of dragging the best of the Sātvatas, as if it were a game in battle, brings me joy once more, enhancing the fame of the Kurus.
प्रवरं वृष्णिवीराणां यन्न हन्याद्धि सात्यकिम्। महाद्विपमिवारण्ये मृगेन्द्र इव कर्षति ॥७-११७-५९॥
pravaraṁ vṛṣṇivīrāṇāṁ yanna hanyāddhi sātyakim। mahādvipamivāraṇye mṛgendra iva karṣati ॥7-117-59॥

सैन्धवासक्तदृष्टित्वान्नैनं पश्यामि माधव। एष त्वसुकरं कर्म यादवार्थे करोम्यहम् ॥७-११७-६१॥
saindhavāsaktadṛṣṭitvānna enaṃ paśyāmi mādhava। eṣa tvasukaraṃ karma yādavārthe karomyaham ॥7-117-61॥

(Due to being attached to Saindhava, I do not see him, O Mādhava. But I perform this difficult task for the sake of the Yādavas.)
Because of my attachment to Saindhava, I cannot see him, O Mādhava. However, I undertake this challenging task for the benefit of the Yādavas.
इत्युक्त्वा वचनं कुर्वन्वासुदेवस्य पाण्डवः। सखड्गं यज्ञशीलस्य पत्रिणा बाहुमच्छिनत् ॥७-११७-६२॥

(Thus, having spoken the words of Vāsudeva, Pāṇḍava, with the sword, cut off the arm of Yajñaśīla with the blade.)
After speaking the words of Vāsudeva, Pāṇḍava used his sword to sever the arm of Yajñaśīla.
