किं नु वक्ष्यसि राजानं धर्मपुत्रं युधिष्ठिरम्। किं कुर्वाणो मया सङ्ख्ये हतो भूरिश्रवा इति ॥७-११८-५॥

इदमिन्द्रेण ते साक्षादुपदिष्टं महात्मना। अस्त्रं रुद्रेण वा पार्थ द्रोणेनाथ कृपेण वा ॥७-११८-६॥

ननु नाम स्वधर्मज्ञस्त्वं लोकेऽभ्यधिकः परैः। अयुध्यमानस्य कथं रणे प्रहृतवानसि ॥७-११८-७॥

न प्रमत्ताय भीताय विरथाय प्रयाचते। व्यसने वर्तमानाय प्रहरन्ति मनस्विनः ॥७-११८-८॥
na pramattāya bhītāya virathāya prayācate। vyasane vartamānāya praharanti manasvinaḥ ॥7-118-8॥

इदं तु नीचाचरितमसत्पुरुषसेवितम्। कथमाचरितं पार्थ त्वया कर्म सुदुष्करम् ॥७-११८-९॥

आर्येण सुकरं ह्याहुरार्यकर्म धनञ्जय। अनार्यकर्म त्वार्येण सुदुष्करतरं भुवि ॥७-११८-१०॥
āryeṇa sukaraṃ hy āhur ārya-karma dhanañjaya। anārya-karma tv āryeṇa suduṣkarataraṃ bhuvi ॥7-118-10॥
[आर्येण (āryeṇa) - by a noble person; सुकरं (sukaram) - easy; हि (hi) - indeed; आहुः (āhuḥ) - they say; आर्यकर्म (ārya-karma) - noble deed; धनञ्जय (dhanañjaya) - O Dhanañjaya; अनार्यकर्म (anārya-karma) - ignoble deed; तु (tu) - but; आर्येण (āryeṇa) - by a noble person; सुदुष्करतरं (suduṣkarataraṃ) - very difficult; भुवि (bhuvi) - on earth;]
(By a noble person, they say, O Dhanañjaya, a noble deed is indeed easy; but an ignoble deed is very difficult on earth.)
O Dhanañjaya, it is said that for a noble person, performing noble deeds is easy, but performing ignoble deeds is very difficult on earth.
येषु येषु नरः पार्थ यत्र यत्र च वर्तते। आशु तच्छीलतामेति तदिदं त्वयि दृश्यते ॥७-११८-११॥
yeṣu yeṣu naraḥ pārtha yatra yatra ca vartate। āśu tacchīlatāmeti tadidaṃ tvayi dṛśyate ॥7-118-11॥

(In whom, in whom a man, O son of Pritha, where, where he exists, quickly attains that nature; this is seen in you.)

कथं हि राजवंश्यस्त्वं कौरवेयो विशेषतः। क्षत्रधर्मादपक्रान्तः सुवृत्तश्चरितव्रतः ॥७-११८-१२॥
kathaṁ hi rājavaṁśyastvaṁ kauraveyo viśeṣataḥ। kṣatradharmādapakrāntaḥ suvṛttaścaritavrataḥ ॥7-118-12॥
[कथम् (katham) - how; हि (hi) - indeed; राजवंश्यः (rājavaṁśyaḥ) - of royal lineage; त्वम् (tvam) - you; कौरवेयः (kauraveyaḥ) - descendant of Kuru; विशेषतः (viśeṣataḥ) - especially; क्षत्रधर्मात् (kṣatradharmāt) - from the duty of a warrior; अपक्रान्तः (apakrāntaḥ) - deviated; सुवृत्तः (suvṛttaḥ) - well-behaved; चरितव्रतः (caritavrataḥ) - one who has undertaken vows;]
(How indeed, you of royal lineage, especially a descendant of Kuru, have deviated from the duty of a warrior, being well-behaved and one who has undertaken vows.)

इदं तु यदतिक्षुद्रं वार्ष्णेयार्थे कृतं त्वया। वासुदेवमतं नूनं नैतत्त्वय्युपपद्यते ॥७-११८-१३॥
idaṁ tu yadatikṣudraṁ vārṣṇeyārthe kṛtaṁ tvayā। vāsudevamataṁ nūnaṁ naitat tvayyupapadyate ॥7-118-13॥
[इदं (idaṁ) - this; तु (tu) - but; यत् (yat) - which; अतिक्षुद्रं (atikṣudraṁ) - very petty; वार्ष्णेयार्थे (vārṣṇeyārthe) - for the sake of the descendant of Vṛṣṇi; कृतं (kṛtaṁ) - done; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; वासुदेवमतं (vāsudevamataṁ) - the opinion of Vāsudeva; नूनं (nūnaṁ) - indeed; न (na) - not; एतत् (etat) - this; त्वयि (tvayi) - in you; उपपद्यते (upapadyate) - befitting;]
(But this very petty act done by you for the sake of the descendant of Vṛṣṇi is indeed not befitting the opinion of Vāsudeva in you.)

को हि नाम प्रमत्ताय परेण सह युध्यते। ईदृशं व्यसनं दद्याद्यो न कृष्णसखो भवेत् ॥७-११८-१४॥
ko hi nāma pramattāya pareṇa saha yudhyate। īdṛśaṃ vyasanaṃ dadyādyo na kṛṣṇasakho bhavet ॥7-118-14॥
[कः (kaḥ) - who; हि (hi) - indeed; नाम (nāma) - by name; प्रमत्ताय (pramattāya) - to the careless; परेण (pareṇa) - with another; सह (saha) - together; युध्यते (yudhyate) - fights; ईदृशम् (īdṛśam) - such; व्यमनम् (vyasanam) - calamity; दद्यात् (dadyāt) - would give; यः (yaḥ) - who; न (na) - not; कृष्णसखः (kṛṣṇasakhaḥ) - friend of Krishna; भवेत् (bhavet) - would be;]
(Who indeed by name would fight with another carelessly? Such a calamity would be given by one who is not a friend of Krishna.)
Who in their right mind would engage in battle with another carelessly? Such a disaster would only befall someone who is not a friend of Krishna.
व्रात्याः संश्लिष्टकर्माणः प्रकृत्यैव विगर्हिताः। वृष्ण्यन्धकाः कथं पार्थ प्रमाणं भवता कृताः ॥७-११८-१५॥
vrātyāḥ sanśliṣṭakarmāṇaḥ prakṛtyaiva vigarhitāḥ। vṛṣṇyandhakāḥ kathaṃ pārtha pramāṇaṃ bhavatā kṛtāḥ ॥7-118-15॥
[व्रात्याः (vrātyāḥ) - outcasts; संश्लिष्टकर्माणः (sanśliṣṭakarmāṇaḥ) - engaged in improper acts; प्रकृत्या (prakṛtyā) - by nature; एव (eva) - indeed; विगर्हिताः (vigarhitāḥ) - condemned; वृष्ण्यन्धकाः (vṛṣṇyandhakāḥ) - the Vṛṣṇis and Andhakas; कथं (kathaṃ) - how; पार्थ (pārtha) - O son of Pṛthā; प्रमाणं (pramāṇam) - authority; भवता (bhavatā) - by you; कृताः (kṛtāḥ) - made;]
(Outcasts engaged in improper acts, indeed condemned by nature. How have the Vṛṣṇis and Andhakas been made an authority by you, O son of Pṛthā?)
O son of Pṛthā, how have you made the Vṛṣṇis and Andhakas, who are outcasts engaged in improper acts and condemned by nature, an authority?
एवमुक्त्वा महाबाहुर्यूपकेतुर्महायशाः। युयुधानं परित्यज्य रणे प्रायमुपाविशत् ॥७-११८-१६॥
evamuktvā mahābāhur yūpaketur mahāyaśāḥ। yuyudhānaṃ parityajya raṇe prāyamupāviśat ॥7-118-16॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; महाबाहुः (mahābāhuḥ) - mighty-armed; यूपकेतुः (yūpaketuḥ) - Yūpaketu; महायशाः (mahāyaśāḥ) - greatly renowned; युयुधानम् (yuyudhānam) - Yuyudhāna; परित्यज्य (parityajya) - abandoning; रणे (raṇe) - in battle; प्रायम् (prāyam) - fasting unto death; उपाविशत् (upāviśat) - sat down;]
(Thus having spoken, the mighty-armed and greatly renowned Yūpaketu, abandoning Yuyudhāna in battle, sat down fasting unto death.)
After speaking thus, the mighty-armed and greatly renowned Yūpaketu left Yuyudhāna in the battlefield and sat down, resolved to fast unto death.
शरानास्तीर्य सव्येन पाणिना पुण्यलक्षणः। यियासुर्ब्रह्मलोकाय प्राणान्प्राणेष्वथाजुहोत् ॥७-११८-१७॥
śarān āstīrya savyena pāṇinā puṇyalakṣaṇaḥ। yiyāsur brahmalokāya prāṇān prāṇeṣv athājuhot ॥7-118-17॥
[शरान् (śarān) - arrows; आस्तीर्य (āstīrya) - spreading; सव्येन (savyena) - with the left; पाणिना (pāṇinā) - by the hand; पुण्यलक्षणः (puṇyalakṣaṇaḥ) - auspicious sign; यियासुः (yiyāsuḥ) - desiring to go; ब्रह्मलोकाय (brahmalokāya) - to the world of Brahma; प्राणान् (prāṇān) - life breaths; प्राणेषु (prāṇeṣu) - into the breaths; अथ (atha) - then; अजुहोत् (ajuhot) - offered;]

Kṛṣṇa and Arjuna, even when criticized, did not utter anything unpleasant. Similarly, Yūpaketana did not feel elated when praised.
तांस्तथा वादिनो राजन्पुत्रांस्तव धनञ्जयः। अमृष्यमाणो मनसा तेषां तस्य च भाषितम् ॥७-११८-२१॥

न्यस्तशस्त्रस्य बालस्य विरथस्य विवर्मणः। अभिमन्योर्वधं तात धार्मिकः को न पूजयेत् ॥७-११८-२६॥

You say to me, "He should not be killed, he should not be killed," with arguments of righteousness, while you are actually unrighteous, cloaked in the guise of righteousness.
यदा बालः सुभद्रायाः सुतः शस्त्रविनाकृतः। युष्माभिर्निहतो युद्धे तदा धर्मः क्व वो गतः ॥७-११८-४३॥

(When the boy, the son of Subhadra, was deprived of weapons and killed by you in battle, then where did your dharma go?)
When the young son of Subhadra was left defenseless and slain by you in the battle, where was your sense of righteousness then?
मया त्वेतत्प्रतिज्ञातं क्षेपे कस्मिंश्चिदेव हि। यो मां निष्पिष्य सङ्ग्रामे जीवन्हन्यात्पदा रुषा ॥ स मे वध्यो भवेच्छत्रुर्यद्यपि स्यान्मुनिव्रतः ॥७-११८-४४॥

(By me, this was promised in haste indeed, for whoever, crushing me in battle, alive, would kill with foot in anger, he would become my enemy to be killed, even if he might be a sage in vow.)

(Struggling in resistance with arms and eyes, you think me dead; thus, this is your lack of understanding. Indeed, this resistance has been done by me, O best of the Kurus.)

yattu pārthena matsnehātsvāṃ pratijñāṃ ca rakṣatā। sakhaḍgo'sya hṛto bāhuretenaivāsmi vañcitaḥ ॥7-118-46॥
[यत् (yat) - that; तु (tu) - but; पार्थेन (pārthena) - by Arjuna; मत्स्नेहात् (matsnehāt) - out of affection for me; स्वां (svāṃ) - his own; प्रतिज्ञां (pratijñāṃ) - promise; च (ca) - and; रक्षता (rakṣatā) - protecting; सखड्गः (sakhaḍgaḥ) - with sword; अस्य (asya) - his; हृतः (hṛtaḥ) - taken away; बाहुः (bāhuḥ) - arm; एतेन (etena) - by this; एव (eva) - indeed; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; वञ्चितः (vañcitaḥ) - deceived;]
(But that, by Arjuna, out of affection for me, protecting his own promise, with sword, his arm was taken away by this, indeed I am deceived.)

(Destined and what is to happen, fate seems to act. He is killed in this battle; what unrighteous act is here?)
"What is destined and what is to happen is driven by fate. He has been killed in this battle; what unrighteous act is there in this?"
अपि चायं पुरा गीतः श्लोको वाल्मीकिना भुवि। पीडाकरममित्राणां यत्स्यात्कर्तव्यमेव तत् ॥७-११८-४८॥

(Also, this verse was formerly sung by Vālmīki on earth: 'That which may cause pain to enemies must indeed be done.')
Furthermore, this verse was once composed by Vālmīki on earth, emphasizing that actions which may cause distress to foes are necessary to undertake.

[मन्त्रैः (mantraiḥ) - by mantras; हि (hi) - indeed; पूतस्य (pūtasya) - of the purified; महाध्वरेषु (mahādhvareṣu) - in great sacrifices; यशस्विनः (yaśasvinaḥ) - of the famous one; भूरिसहस्रदस्य (bhūrisahasradasya) - of the giver of many thousands; मुनेः (muneḥ) - of the sage; इव (iva) - like; अरण्यगतस्य (araṇyagatasya) - who has gone to the forest; तस्य (tasya) - of him; न (na) - not; तत्र (tatra) - there; कश्चित् (kaścit) - anyone; वधम् (vadham) - killing; अभ्यनन्दत् (abhyanandat) - approved;]
(By mantras indeed purified in great sacrifices, of the famous one, the giver of many thousands, like the sage who has gone to the forest, of him, there no one approved of the killing.)

(He, purified by the brilliance of being struck by a weapon, having abandoned his excellent body in the great battle, ascended upwards, the boon-giver, worthy of boons, having turned back by supreme righteousness, to heaven and earth.)
