tribhāgamātraśeṣāyāṃ rātryāṃ yuddhamavartata. kurūṇāṃ pāṇḍavānāṃ ca saṃhṛṣṭānāṃ viśāṃ pate ॥7-161-1॥
[त्रिभाग (tribhāga) - three parts; मात्र (mātra) - only; शेषायां (śeṣāyāṃ) - remaining; रात्र्यां (rātryāṃ) - in the night; युद्धम् (yuddham) - battle; अवर्तत (avartata) - took place; कुरूणाम् (kurūṇām) - of the Kauravas; पाण्डवानाम् (pāṇḍavānām) - of the Pandavas; च (ca) - and; संहृष्टानाम् (saṃhṛṣṭānām) - of the joyful; विशाम् (viśām) - of the people; पते (pate) - O lord;]
(In the remaining third part of the night, the battle took place between the joyful Kauravas and Pandavas, O lord of the people.)

अथ चन्द्रप्रभां मुष्णन्नादित्यस्य पुरःसरः। अरुणोऽभ्युदयां चक्रे ताम्रीकुर्वन्निवाम्बरम् ॥७-१६१-२॥

(Having seen the divided Kurus, Madhava said to Arjuna, "From the left, I make these Kurus your rivals, O Savyasacin.")
Upon seeing the divided Kurus, Madhava addressed Arjuna, saying, "O Savyasacin, I will make these Kurus your rivals from the left."
स माधवमनुज्ञाय कुरुष्वेति धनञ्जयः। द्रोणकर्णौ महेष्वासौ सव्यतः पर्यवर्तत ॥७-१६१-५॥
sa mādhavamanujñāya kuruṣveti dhanañjayaḥ। droṇakarṇau maheṣvāsau savyataḥ paryavartata ॥7-161-5॥

अभिप्रायं तु कृष्णस्य ज्ञात्वा परपुरञ्जयः। आजिशीर्षगतं दृष्ट्वा भीमसेनं समासदत् ॥७-१६१-६॥

(But knowing the intention of Krishna, the conqueror of enemy cities, seeing Bhimasena at the head of the battlefield, approached.)
Understanding Krishna's intention, the conqueror of enemy cities approached Bhimasena, who was at the forefront of the battlefield.

अस्मिंश्चेदागते काले श्रेयो न प्रतिपत्स्यसे। असम्भावितरूपः सन्नानृशंस्यं करिष्यसि ॥७-१६१-८॥
asmiṁścedāgate kāle śreyo na pratipatsyase। asambhāvitarūpaḥ sannānṛśaṁsyaṁ kariṣyasi ॥7-161-8॥

(If at this time you do not obtain what is better, being in an unexpected form, you will act cruelly.)
If you do not achieve what is better at this time, you will act cruelly, being in an unexpected form.
सत्यश्रीधर्मयशसां वीर्येणानृण्यमाप्नुहि। भिन्ध्यनीकं युधां श्रेष्ठ सव्यसाचिन्निमान्कुरु ॥७-१६१-९॥
satyaśrīdharmayaśasāṃ vīryeṇānṛṇyamāpnuhi। bhindhyanīkaṃ yudhāṃ śreṣṭha savyasācinnimānkuru ॥7-161-9॥
[सत्य (satya) - truth; श्री (śrī) - prosperity; धर्म (dharma) - righteousness; यशसां (yaśasāṃ) - fame; वीर्येण (vīryeṇa) - by valor; अनृण्यम् (anṛṇyam) - debt-free; आप्नुहि (āpnuh) - attain; भिन्ध्य (bhindhya) - break; अनीकं (anīkaṃ) - army; युधां (yudhāṃ) - of warriors; श्रेष्ठ (śreṣṭha) - best; सव्यसाचिन् (savyasācin) - Arjuna; निमान् (nimān) - these; कुरु (kuru) - do; ॥७-१६१-९॥ (॥7-161-9॥) - (verse number);]
(Attain debt-free status by valor, truth, prosperity, righteousness, and fame. O best of warriors, Arjuna, break the army and do these.)
O Arjuna, the best of warriors, achieve freedom from debt through valor, truth, prosperity, righteousness, and fame. Break through the enemy's ranks and accomplish these tasks.

Arjuna, encouraged by Bhima and Keshava, skillfully maneuvered to encircle the enemy, surpassing the defenses of Karna and Drona.
तमाजिशीर्षमायान्तं दहन्तं क्षत्रियर्षभान्। पराक्रान्तं पराक्रम्य यतन्तः क्षत्रियर्षभाः ॥ नाशक्नुवन्वारयितुं वर्धमानमिवानलम् ॥७-१६१-११॥
tam ājiśīrṣam āyāntaṃ dahantaṃ kṣatriyarṣabhān। parākrāntaṃ parākramya yatantaḥ kṣatriyarṣabhāḥ ॥ nāśaknuvan vārayituṃ vardhamānam ivānalam ॥7-161-11॥
[तम् (tam) - that; आजिशीर्षम् (ājiśīrṣam) - battlefield; आयान्तम् (āyāntam) - approaching; दहन्तम् (dahantam) - burning; क्षत्रियर्षभान् (kṣatriyarṣabhān) - warrior chiefs; पराक्रान्तम् (parākrāntam) - valiant; पराक्रम्य (parākramya) - having shown valor; यतन्तः (yatantaḥ) - striving; क्षत्रियर्षभाः (kṣatriyarṣabhāḥ) - warrior chiefs; न (na) - not; अशक्नुवन् (aśaknuvan) - were able; वारयितुम् (vārayitum) - to stop; वर्धमानम् (vardhamānam) - growing; इव (iva) - like; अनलम् (analam) - fire;]
(That battlefield approaching, burning the warrior chiefs; valiant, having shown valor, striving, the warrior chiefs were not able to stop it, growing like fire.)

अथ दुर्योधनः कर्णः शकुनिश्चापि सौबलः। अभ्यवर्षञ्शरव्रातैः कुन्तीपुत्रं धनञ्जयम् ॥७-१६१-१२॥

(Their weapons, of all the best weapon-knowers, having disregarded, O king, he covered with showers of arrows.)

अस्त्रैरस्त्राणि संवार्य लघुहस्तो धनञ्जयः। सर्वानविध्यन्निशितैर्दशभिर्दशभिः शरैः ॥७-१६१-१४॥

उद्धूता रजसो वृष्टिः शरवृष्टिस्तथैव च। तमश्च घोरं शब्दश्च तदा समभवन्महान् ॥७-१६१-१५॥
uddhūtā rajaso vṛṣṭiḥ śaravṛṣṭistathaiva ca। tamaśca ghoraṃ śabdaśca tadā samabhavanmahān ॥7-161-15॥

न द्यौर्न भूमिर्न दिशः प्राज्ञायन्त तथा गते। सैन्येन रजसा मूढं सर्वमन्धमिवाभवत् ॥७-१६१-१६॥
na dyaurna bhūmirna diśaḥ prājñāyanta tathā gate। sainyena rajasā mūḍhaṃ sarvamandhamivābhavat ॥7-161-16॥

विरथा रथिनो राजन्समासाद्य परस्परम्। केषेशु समसज्जन्त कवचेषु भुजेषु च ॥७-१६१-१८॥
virathā rathino rājansamāsādya parasparam। keṣeṣu samasajjanta kavaceṣu bhujeṣu ca ॥7-161-18॥
[विरथा (virathā) - charioteers without chariots; रथिनः (rathinaḥ) - charioteers; राजन् (rājan) - O king; समासाद्य (samāsādya) - having approached; परस्परम् (parasparam) - each other; केषेशु (keṣeṣu) - in the hair; समसज्जन्त (samasajjanta) - became entangled; कवचेषु (kavaceṣu) - in the armor; भुजेषु (bhujeṣu) - in the arms; च (ca) - and;]
(Charioteers without chariots, O king, having approached each other, became entangled in the hair, in the armor, and in the arms.)

हताश्वा हतसूताश्च निश्चेष्टा रथिनस्तदा। जीवन्त इव तत्र स्म व्यदृश्यन्त भयार्दिताः ॥७-१६१-१९॥
