अर्जुनस्य वचः श्रुत्वा नोचुस्तत्र महारथाः। अप्रियं वा प्रियं वापि महाराज धनञ्जयम् ॥७-१६८-१॥
arjunasya vacaḥ śrutvā nocustatra mahārathāḥ। apriyaṃ vā priyaṃ vāpi mahārāja dhanañjayam ॥7-168-1॥
[अर्जुनस्य (arjunasya) - of Arjuna; वचः (vacaḥ) - words; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; नोचुस्तत्र (nocustatra) - did not speak there; महारथाः (mahārathāḥ) - great warriors; अप्रियं (apriyaṃ) - unpleasant; वा (vā) - or; प्रियं (priyaṃ) - pleasant; वा (vā) - or; अपि (api) - even; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; धनञ्जयम् (dhanañjayam) - Dhananjaya;]
(Having heard the words of Arjuna, the great warriors did not speak there, whether unpleasant or pleasant, O great king, to Dhananjaya.)
Upon hearing Arjuna's words, the great warriors remained silent, choosing neither to speak of unpleasant nor pleasant matters to Dhananjaya, O great king.
ततः क्रुद्धो महाबाहुर्भीमसेनोऽभ्यभाषत। उत्स्मयन्निव कौन्तेयमर्जुनं भरतर्षभ ॥७-१६८-२॥
tataḥ kruddho mahābāhurbhīmaseno'bhyabhāṣata। utsmayanniva kaunteyamarjunaṃ bharatarṣabha ॥7-168-2॥

(Then, the mighty-armed Bhimasena, angry, spoke to Arjuna, the son of Kunti, as if smiling, O best of the Bharatas.)
Then, in a fit of anger, the mighty-armed Bhimasena addressed Arjuna, the son of Kunti, with a smile, O best of the Bharatas.
मुनिर्यथारण्यगतो भाषसे धर्मसंहितम्। न्यस्तदण्डो यथा पार्थ ब्राह्मणः संशितव्रतः ॥७-१६८-३॥
muniryathāraṇyagato bhāṣase dharmasaṃhitam। nyastadaṇḍo yathā pārtha brāhmaṇaḥ saṃśitavrataḥ ॥7-168-3॥
[मुनिः (muniḥ) - sage; यथा (yathā) - as; अरण्यगतः (araṇyagataḥ) - gone to the forest; भाषसे (bhāṣase) - you speak; धर्मसंहितम् (dharmasaṃhitam) - the collection of dharma; न्यस्तदण्डः (nyastadaṇḍaḥ) - one who has renounced punishment; यथा (yathā) - as; पार्थ (pārtha) - O son of Pṛthā; ब्राह्मणः (brāhmaṇaḥ) - a brāhmaṇa; संशितव्रतः (saṃśitavrataḥ) - of firm vows;]
(The sage, as one who has gone to the forest, speaks the collection of dharma. O son of Pṛthā, like a brāhmaṇa who has renounced punishment and is of firm vows.)
The sage, having retreated to the forest, speaks of the principles of dharma. O son of Pṛthā, like a brāhmaṇa who has laid down his rod of punishment and is steadfast in his vows.
क्षतात्त्राता क्षताज्जीवन्क्षान्तस्त्रिष्वपि साधुषु। क्षत्रियः क्षितिमाप्नोति क्षिप्रं धर्मं यशः श्रियम् ॥७-१६८-४॥
kṣatāttrātā kṣatājjīvan kṣāntastriṣvapi sādhuṣu। kṣatriyaḥ kṣitimāpnoti kṣipraṃ dharmaṃ yaśaḥ śriyam ॥7-168-4॥
[क्षतात् (kṣatāt) - from injury; त्राता (trātā) - protector; क्षतात् (kṣatāt) - from injury; जीवन् (jīvan) - living; क्षान्तः (kṣāntaḥ) - forgiving; त्रिषु (triṣu) - in three; अपि (api) - also; साधुषु (sādhuṣu) - among the virtuous; क्षत्रियः (kṣatriyaḥ) - a warrior; क्षितिम् (kṣitim) - earth; आप्नोति (āpnoti) - obtains; क्षिप्रं (kṣipraṃ) - quickly; धर्मं (dharmaṃ) - righteousness; यशः (yaśaḥ) - fame; श्रियम् (śriyam) - prosperity;]
(The warrior who is a protector from injury, living from injury, forgiving among the three, also among the virtuous, quickly obtains the earth, righteousness, fame, and prosperity.)
A warrior who protects from harm, survives injuries, and is forgiving among the virtuous, quickly gains the earth, righteousness, fame, and prosperity.
स भवान्क्षत्रियगुणैर्युक्तः सर्वैः कुलोद्वहः। अविपश्चिद्यथा वाक्यं व्याहरन्नाद्य शोभसे ॥७-१६८-५॥
sa bhavān kṣatriyaguṇair yuktaḥ sarvaiḥ kulodvahaḥ। avipaścid yathā vākyaṃ vyāharann ādya śobhase ॥7-168-5॥
[स (sa) - he; भवान् (bhavān) - you; क्षत्रियगुणैः (kṣatriyaguṇaiḥ) - with Kshatriya qualities; युक्तः (yuktaḥ) - endowed; सर्वैः (sarvaiḥ) - with all; कुलोद्वहः (kulodvahaḥ) - noble lineage; अविपश्चित् (avipaścit) - ignorant; यथा (yathā) - like; वाक्यम् (vākyaṃ) - words; व्याहरन् (vyāharan) - uttering; आद्य (ādya) - today; शोभसे (śobhase) - you appear;]
(He, you, endowed with all Kshatriya qualities, noble lineage, like an ignorant, uttering words, today you appear.)
You, who are endowed with all the qualities of a Kshatriya and belong to a noble lineage, today appear as if speaking like an ignorant person.
पराक्रमस्ते कौन्तेय शक्रस्येव शचीपतेः। न चातिवर्तसे धर्मं वेलामिव महोदधिः ॥७-१६८-६॥
parākramaḥ te kaunteya śakrasya iva śacīpateḥ। na ca ativartase dharmam velām iva mahodadhiḥ ॥7-168-6॥
[पराक्रमः (parākramaḥ) - valour; ते (te) - your; कौन्तेय (kaunteya) - O son of Kunti; शक्रस्य (śakrasya) - of Indra; इव (iva) - like; शचीपतेः (śacīpateḥ) - of the lord of Shachi; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; अतिवर्तसे (ativartase) - transgress; धर्मं (dharmam) - duty; वेलाम् (velām) - boundary; इव (iva) - like; महोदधिः (mahodadhiḥ) - the great ocean;]
(Your valour, O son of Kunti, is like that of Indra, the lord of Shachi. You do not transgress duty, like the boundary of the great ocean.)
O son of Kunti, your courage is akin to that of Indra, the lord of Shachi. You uphold your duty without transgression, just as the great ocean respects its boundaries.
न पूजयेत्त्वा कोऽन्वद्य यत्त्रयोदशवार्षिकम्। अमर्षं पृष्ठतः कृत्वा धर्ममेवाभिकाङ्क्षसे ॥७-१६८-७॥
na pūjayettvā ko'nvadya yattrayodaśavārṣikam। amarṣaṃ pṛṣṭhataḥ kṛtvā dharmamevābhikāṅkṣase ॥7-168-7॥
[न (na) - not; पूजयेत् (pūjayet) - worship; त्वा (tvā) - you; कः (kaḥ) - who; अन्वद्य (anvadya) - blameless; यत् (yat) - which; त्रयोदशवार्षिकम् (trayodaśavārṣikam) - thirteen years; अमर्षम् (amarṣam) - anger; पृष्ठतः (pṛṣṭhataḥ) - behind; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having done; धर्मम् (dharmam) - duty; एव (eva) - only; अभिकाङ्क्षसे (abhikāṅkṣase) - you desire;]
(Not worshipping you, who is blameless, for thirteen years, having put anger behind, you desire only duty.)
For thirteen years, without worshipping you who are blameless, and having set aside anger, you seek only to fulfill your duty.
दिष्ट्या तात मनस्तेऽद्य स्वधर्ममनुवर्तते। आनृशंस्ये च ते दिष्ट्या बुद्धिः सततमच्युत ॥७-१६८-८॥
diṣṭyā tāta manaste'dya svadharmamanuvartate। ānṛśaṁsye ca te diṣṭyā buddhiḥ satatamacyuta ॥7-168-8॥
[दिष्ट्या (diṣṭyā) - by fortune; तात (tāta) - O dear; मनः (manaḥ) - mind; ते (te) - your; अद्य (adya) - today; स्वधर्मम् (svadharmam) - own duty; अनुवर्तते (anuvartate) - follows; आनृशंस्ये (ānṛśaṁsye) - in compassion; च (ca) - and; ते (te) - your; दिष्ट्या (diṣṭyā) - by fortune; बुद्धिः (buddhiḥ) - intellect; सततम् (satatam) - always; अच्युत (acyuta) - O infallible one;]
(By fortune, O dear, your mind today follows your own duty. And by fortune, your intellect is always in compassion, O infallible one.)
O dear, it is fortunate that today your mind adheres to your own duty, and your intellect is consistently compassionate, O infallible one.
यत्तु धर्मप्रवृत्तस्य हृतं राज्यमधर्मतः। द्रौपदी च परामृष्टा सभामानीय शत्रुभिः ॥७-१६८-९॥
yattu dharmapravṛttasya hṛtaṃ rājyamadharmataḥ। draupadī ca parāmṛṣṭā sabhāmānīya śatrubhiḥ ॥7-168-9॥
[यत् (yat) - that which; तु (tu) - but; धर्मप्रवृत्तस्य (dharmapravṛttasya) - of the one engaged in righteousness; हृतं (hṛtaṃ) - taken away; राज्यम् (rājyam) - kingdom; अधर्मतः (adharmataḥ) - unrighteously; द्रौपदी (draupadī) - Draupadi; च (ca) - and; परामृष्टा (parāmṛṣṭā) - insulted; सभाम् (sabhām) - to the assembly; आनीय (ānīya) - having brought; शत्रुभिः (śatrubhiḥ) - by the enemies;]
(That which was taken away unrighteously from the one engaged in righteousness, the kingdom, and Draupadi was insulted, having been brought to the assembly by the enemies.)
The kingdom that was unrighteously taken from the righteous, and Draupadi, who was insulted and brought to the assembly by the enemies.
वनं प्रव्राजिताश्चास्म वल्कलाजिनवाससः। अनर्हमाणास्तं भावं त्रयोदश समाः परैः ॥७-१६८-१०॥
vanaṁ pravrājitāścāsma valkalājinavāsasaḥ। anarhamāṇāstaṁ bhāvaṁ trayodaśa samāḥ paraiḥ ॥7-168-10॥
[वनम् (vanam) - forest; प्रव्राजिताः (pravrājitāḥ) - exiled; च (ca) - and; अस्म (asma) - we; वल्कल (valkala) - bark; अजिन (ajina) - deerskin; वाससः (vāsasaḥ) - clothed; अनर्हमाणाः (anarhamāṇāḥ) - undeserving; तं (tam) - that; भावम् (bhāvam) - state; त्रयोदश (trayodaśa) - thirteen; समाः (samāḥ) - years; परैः (paraiḥ) - by others;]
(We, exiled to the forest, clothed in bark and deerskin, undeserving of that state, for thirteen years by others.)
We were exiled to the forest, wearing garments of bark and deerskin, undeserving of such a state, for thirteen years by others.
एतान्यमर्षस्थानानि मर्षितानि त्वयानघ। क्षत्रधर्मप्रसक्तेन सर्वमेतदनुष्ठितम् ॥७-१६८-११॥
etāny amarṣa-sthānāni marṣitāni tvayānagha। kṣatra-dharma-prasaktena sarvam etad anuṣṭhitam ॥7-168-11॥
[एतानि (etāni) - these; अमर्ष (amarṣa) - anger; स्थानानि (sthānāni) - places; मर्षितानि (marṣitāni) - endured; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; अनघ (anagha) - O sinless one; क्षत्र (kṣatra) - warrior; धर्म (dharma) - duty; प्रसक्तेन (prasaktena) - engaged in; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; एतत् (etat) - this; अनुष्ठितम् (anuṣṭhitam) - performed;]
(These places of anger have been endured by you, O sinless one. All this has been performed by you, engaged in the duty of a warrior.)
"O sinless one, you have endured these places of anger. All this has been performed by you, being engaged in the duty of a warrior."
तमधर्ममपाक्रष्टुमारब्धः सहितस्त्वया। सानुबन्धान्हनिष्यामि क्षुद्रान्राज्यहरानहम् ॥७-१६८-१२॥
tamadharmamapākraṣṭumārabdhaḥ sahitastvayā। sānubandhān haniṣyāmi kṣudrān rājya-harān aham ॥7-168-12॥
[तम् (tam) - that; अधर्मम् (adharmam) - unrighteousness; अपाक्रष्टुम् (apākraṣṭum) - to remove; आरब्धः (ārabdhaḥ) - begun; सहितः (sahitaḥ) - together; त्वया (tvayā) - with you; स-अनुबन्धान् (sa-anubandhān) - with followers; हनिष्यामि (haniṣyāmi) - I will destroy; क्षुद्रान् (kṣudrān) - petty; राज्य-हरान् (rājya-harān) - kingdom-stealers; अहम् (aham) - I;]
(I have begun to remove that unrighteousness together with you. I will destroy the petty kingdom-stealers with their followers.)
I have started to eliminate that unrighteousness with your help. I will annihilate the petty usurpers of the kingdom along with their followers.
त्वया तु कथितं पूर्वं युद्धायाभ्यागता वयम्। घटामश्च यथाशक्ति त्वं तु नोऽद्य जुगुप्ससे ॥७-१६८-१३॥
tvayā tu kathitaṃ pūrvaṃ yuddhāyābhyāgatā vayam। ghaṭāmaśca yathāśakti tvaṃ tu no'dya jugupsase ॥7-168-13॥
[त्वया (tvayā) - by you; तु (tu) - but; कथितं (kathitaṃ) - said; पूर्वं (pūrvaṃ) - before; युद्धाय (yuddhāya) - for battle; अभ्यागता (abhyāgatā) - arrived; वयम् (vayam) - we; घटामः (ghaṭāmaḥ) - we strive; च (ca) - and; यथा (yathā) - as; शक्ति (śakti) - ability; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; तु (tu) - but; नः (naḥ) - us; अद्य (adya) - today; जुगुप्ससे (jugupsase) - you despise;]
(By you, it was said before, 'We have arrived for battle.' We strive as per ability, but today you despise us.)
You had previously stated, 'We have come for battle.' We are doing our best, but today you look down upon us.
स्वधर्मं नेच्छसे ज्ञातुं मिथ्या वचनमेव ते। भयार्दितानामस्माकं वाचा मर्माणि कृन्तसि ॥७-१६८-१४॥
svadharmaṁ necchase jñātuṁ mithyā vacanameva te। bhayārditānāmasmākaṁ vācā marmāṇi kṛntasi ॥7-168-14॥
[स्वधर्मम् (svadharmam) - own duty; न (na) - not; इच्छसि (icchasi) - you wish; ज्ञातुम् (jñātum) - to know; मिथ्या (mithyā) - false; वचनम् (vacanam) - words; एव (eva) - only; ते (te) - your; भयार्दितानाम् (bhayārditānām) - of the frightened; अस्माकम् (asmākam) - our; वाचा (vācā) - by words; मर्माणि (marmāṇi) - vital points; कृन्तसि (kṛntasi) - you cut;]
(You do not wish to know your own duty, only false words of yours cut the vital points of us who are frightened by words.)
You refuse to understand your own duty, and instead, your false words wound the hearts of us who are already frightened.
वपन्व्रणे क्षारमिव क्षतानां शत्रुकर्शन। विदीर्यते मे हृदयं त्वया वाक्षल्यपीडितम् ॥७-१६८-१५॥
vapanvraṇe kṣāramiva kṣatānāṃ śatrukarśana। vidīryate me hṛdayaṃ tvayā vākṣalyapīḍitam ॥7-168-15॥
[वपन्व्रणे (vapanvraṇe) - in a wound caused by shaving; क्षारमिव (kṣāramiva) - like an alkali; क्षतानां (kṣatānāṃ) - of the injured; शत्रुकर्शन (śatrukarśana) - O tormentor of enemies; विदीर्यते (vidīryate) - is torn apart; मे (me) - my; हृदयं (hṛdayaṃ) - heart; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; वाक्षल्यपीडितम् (vākṣalyapīḍitam) - afflicted by harsh words;]
(O tormentor of enemies, like an alkali in a wound caused by shaving, my heart is torn apart by you, afflicted by harsh words.)
O tormentor of enemies, my heart is torn apart by your harsh words, just like an alkali in a shaving wound.
अधर्ममेतद्विपुलं धार्मिकः सन्न बुध्यसे। यत्त्वमात्मानमस्मांश्च प्रशंस्यान्न प्रशंससि ॥ यः कलां षोडशीं त्वत्तो नार्हते तं प्रशंससि ॥७-१६८-१६॥
adharmametadvipulaṁ dhārmikaḥ sanna budhyase। yattvamātmānamasmāṁśca praśaṁsyānna praśaṁsasi ॥ yaḥ kalāṁ ṣoḍaśīṁ tvatto nārhate taṁ praśaṁsasi ॥7-168-16॥
[अधर्मम् (adharmam) - unrighteousness; एतत् (etat) - this; विपुलम् (vipulam) - great; धार्मिकः (dhārmikaḥ) - righteous; सन् (san) - being; बुध्यसे (budhyase) - you understand; यत् (yat) - that; त्वम् (tvam) - you; आत्मानम् (ātmānam) - self; अस्मान् (asmān) - us; च (ca) - and; प्रशंस्यान् (praśaṁsyān) - praiseworthy; न (na) - not; प्रशंससि (praśaṁsasi) - you praise; यः (yaḥ) - who; कलाम् (kalām) - part; षोडशीम् (ṣoḍaśīm) - sixteenth; त्वत्तः (tvattaḥ) - than you; न (na) - not; अर्हते (arhate) - deserve; तम् (tam) - him; प्रशंससि (praśaṁsasi) - you praise;]
(This is great unrighteousness; being righteous, you do not understand. You do not praise yourself and us who are praiseworthy. You praise him who does not deserve a sixteenth part of you.)
This is a great injustice; despite being righteous, you fail to understand. You do not praise yourself and us, who are truly praiseworthy, but instead, you praise someone who does not deserve even a fraction of your worth.
स्वयमेवात्मनो वक्तुं न युक्तं गुणसंस्तवम्। दारयेयं महीं क्रोधाद्विकिरेयं च पर्वतान् ॥७-१६८-१७॥
svayamevātmanaḥ vaktuṃ na yuktaṃ guṇasaṃstavām। dārayeyaṃ mahīṃ krodhādvikireyaṃ ca parvatān ॥7-168-17॥
[स्वयम् (svayam) - oneself; एव (eva) - indeed; आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - of oneself; वक्तुम् (vaktum) - to speak; न (na) - not; युक्तम् (yuktam) - appropriate; गुणसंस्तवम् (guṇasaṃstavam) - praise of qualities; दारयेयम् (dārayeyam) - I would split; महीं (mahīm) - the earth; क्रोधात् (krodhāt) - out of anger; विकिरेयम् (vikireyam) - I would scatter; च (ca) - and; पर्वतान् (parvatān) - mountains;]
(It is not appropriate for oneself to speak praise of one's own qualities. Out of anger, I would split the earth and scatter the mountains.)
It is not fitting for one to praise their own virtues. In anger, I could shatter the earth and scatter the mountains.
आविध्य च गदां गुर्वीं भीमां काञ्चनमालिनीम्। गिरिप्रकाशान्क्षितिजान्भञ्जेयमनिलो यथा ॥७-१६८-१८॥
āvidhya ca gadāṃ gurvīṃ bhīmāṃ kāñcanamālinīm। giriprakāśānkṣitijānbhañjeyamanilo yathā ॥7-168-18॥
[आविध्य (āvidhya) - wielding; च (ca) - and; गदां (gadām) - mace; गुर्वीं (gurvīṃ) - heavy; भीमां (bhīmāṃ) - terrible; काञ्चनमालिनीम् (kāñcanamālinīm) - golden-garlanded; गिरिप्रकाशान् (giriprakāśān) - mountain-like; क्षितिजान् (kṣitijān) - earth-born; भञ्जेयम् (bhañjeyam) - I would shatter; अनिलः (anilaḥ) - wind; यथा (yathā) - as;]
(Wielding the heavy, terrible, golden-garlanded mace, I would shatter the mountain-like, earth-born ones as the wind does.)
Wielding the heavy and terrible mace adorned with a golden garland, I would shatter the mountain-like beings born of the earth, just as the wind does.
स त्वमेवंविधं जानन्भ्रातरं मां नरर्षभ। द्रोणपुत्राद्भयं कर्तुं नार्हस्यमितविक्रम ॥७-१६८-१९॥
sa tvamevaṃvidhaṃ jānanbhrātaraṃ māṃ nararṣabha। droṇaputrādbhayaṃ kartuṃ nārhasyamitavikrama ॥7-168-19॥
[स (sa) - you; त्वम् (tvam) - you; एवंविधम् (evaṃvidham) - such; जानन् (jānan) - knowing; भ्रातरम् (bhrātaram) - brother; माम् (mām) - me; नरर्षभ (nararṣabha) - O best of men; द्रोणपुत्रात् (droṇaputrāt) - from Drona's son; भयम् (bhayam) - fear; कर्तुम् (kartum) - to make; न (na) - not; अर्हसि (arhasi) - you should; अमितविक्रम (amitavikrama) - O one of immeasurable valor;]
(You, knowing such, should not make me, your brother, O best of men, fear from Drona's son, O one of immeasurable valor.)
O best of men, knowing this, you should not cause your brother to fear Drona's son, O one of immeasurable valor.
अथ वा तिष्ठ बीभत्सो सह सर्वैर्नरर्षभैः। अहमेनं गदापाणिर्जेष्याम्येको महाहवे ॥७-१६८-२०॥
atha vā tiṣṭha bībhatsō saha sarvairnaraṛṣabhaiḥ। ahamēnaṁ gadāpāṇirjēṣyāmyēkō mahāhavē ॥7-168-20॥
[अथ (atha) - then; वा (vā) - or; तिष्ठ (tiṣṭha) - stand; बीभत्सः (bībhatsaḥ) - Bibhatsu; सह (saha) - with; सर्वैः (sarvaiḥ) - all; नरर्षभैः (naraṛṣabhaiḥ) - bulls among men; अहम् (aham) - I; एनम् (enam) - this; गदापाणिः (gadāpāṇiḥ) - with mace in hand; जेष्यामि (jeṣyāmi) - will conquer; एकः (ekaḥ) - alone; महाहवे (mahāhave) - in the great battle;]
(Then or stand, Bibhatsu, with all the bulls among men; I, with mace in hand, will conquer this one alone in the great battle.)
Then, Bibhatsu, either stand with all the great warriors, or I alone, with mace in hand, will defeat this one in the great battle.
ततः पाञ्चालराजस्य पुत्रः पार्थमथाब्रवीत्। सङ्क्रुद्धमिव नर्दन्तं हिरण्यकशिपुं हरिः ॥७-१६८-२१॥
tataḥ pāñcālarājasya putraḥ pārthamathābravīt। saṅkruddhamiva nardantaṃ hiraṇyakaśipuṃ hariḥ ॥7-168-21॥

बीभत्सो विप्रकर्माणि विदितानि मनीषिणाम्। याजनाध्यापने दानं तथा यज्ञप्रतिग्रहौ ॥७-१६८-२२॥
bībhatsō viprakarmāṇi viditāni manīṣiṇām। yājanādhyāpanē dānaṁ tathā yajñapratigrahau ॥7-168-22॥

षष्ठमध्ययनं नाम तेषां कस्मिन्प्रतिष्ठितः। हतो द्रोणो मया यत्तत्किं मां पार्थ विगर्हसे ॥७-१६८-२३॥

Thus, if someone employs unbearable illusion and claims to be a Brahmin, he should indeed be destroyed by illusion itself if he is not appropriate, O son of Pritha. What is there to be done?
तस्मिंस्तथा मया शस्ते यदि द्रौणायनी रुषा। कुरुते भैरवं नादं तत्र किं मम हीयते ॥७-१६८-२६॥
tasmiṁstathā mayā śaste yadi drauṇāyanī ruṣā। kurute bhairavaṁ nādaṁ tatra kiṁ mama hīyate ॥7-168-26॥

यच्च मां धार्मिको भूत्वा ब्रवीषि गुरुघातिनम्। तदर्थमहमुत्पन्नः पाञ्चाल्यस्य सुतोऽनलात् ॥७-१६८-२८॥
yacca māṃ dhārmiko bhūtvā bravīṣi gurughātinam। tadarthamahamutpannaḥ pāñcālyasya suto'nalāt ॥7-168-28॥

(Which, having become righteous, you call me a teacher-killer; for that purpose, I was born as the son of the Panchala from fire.)

(Whose duty or non-duty may be equal in battle, how can you call him a Brahmin or a Kshatriya, O Dhananjaya?)
In the context of battle, where one's duty or lack thereof is balanced, how can you distinguish between a Brahmin and a Kshatriya, O Dhananjaya?
यो ह्यनस्त्रविदो हन्याद्ब्रह्मास्त्रैः क्रोधमूर्छितः। सर्वोपायैर्न स कथं वध्यः पुरुषसत्तम ॥७-१६८-३०॥
yo hyanastravido hanyādbrahmāstraiḥ krodhamūrchitaḥ। sarvopāyairna sa kathaṃ vadhyaḥ puruṣasattama ॥7-168-30॥
[यः (yaḥ) - who; हि (hi) - indeed; अनस्त्रविदः (anastravidaḥ) - unarmed; हन्यात् (hanyāt) - would kill; ब्रह्मास्त्रैः (brahmāstraiḥ) - with Brahma weapons; क्रोधमूर्छितः (krodhamūrchitaḥ) - overcome with anger; सर्वोपायैः (sarvopāyaiḥ) - by all means; न (na) - not; सः (saḥ) - he; कथं (kathaṃ) - how; वध्यः (vadhyaḥ) - to be killed; पुरुषसत्तम (puruṣasattama) - O best of men;]
(Who indeed, unarmed, would kill with Brahma weapons, overcome with anger; by all means, he is not to be killed, O best of men.)
O best of men, one who, though unarmed, would kill with Brahma weapons when overcome with anger, is not to be killed by any means.
विधर्मिणं धर्मविद्भिः प्रोक्तं तेषां विषोपमम्। जानन्धर्मार्थतत्त्वज्ञः किमर्जुन विगर्हसे ॥७-१६८-३१॥
vidharmiṇaṃ dharmavidbhiḥ proktaṃ teṣāṃ viṣopamam। jānandharmārthatattvajñaḥ kimarjuna vigarhase ॥7-168-31॥
[विधर्मिणं (vidharmiṇam) - one who acts against dharma; धर्मविद्भिः (dharmavidbhiḥ) - by those who know dharma; प्रोक्तं (proktaṃ) - is said; तेषां (teṣām) - of them; विषोपमम् (viṣopamam) - like poison; जानन् (jānan) - knowing; धर्मार्थतत्त्वज्ञः (dharmārthatattvajñaḥ) - knower of the essence of dharma and artha; किम् (kim) - why; अर्जुन (arjuna) - Arjuna; विगर्हसे (vigarhase) - do you criticize;]
(One who acts against dharma is said by those who know dharma to be like poison. Knowing this, O Arjuna, knower of the essence of dharma and artha, why do you criticize?)
Those who act against dharma are considered poisonous by the wise. Knowing this, Arjuna, who understands the essence of dharma and artha, why do you criticize?
नृशंसः स मयाक्रम्य रथ एव निपातितः। तन्माभिनन्द्यं बीभत्सो किमर्थं नाभिनन्दसे ॥७-१६८-३२॥
nṛśaṃsaḥ sa mayākramya ratha eva nipātitaḥ। tanmābhinandyaṃ bībhatso kimarthaṃ nābhinandase ॥7-168-32॥
[नृशंसः (nṛśaṃsaḥ) - cruel; सः (saḥ) - he; मया (mayā) - by me; आक्रम्य (ākramya) - having attacked; रथः (rathaḥ) - chariot; एव (eva) - only; निपातितः (nipātitaḥ) - felled; तत् (tat) - that; मा (mā) - not; अभिनन्द्यम् (abhinandyam) - to be praised; बीभत्सः (bībhatsaḥ) - O disgusting one; किमर्थम् (kimartham) - why; न (na) - not; अभिनन्दसे (abhinandase) - do you praise;]
(The cruel one, having been attacked by me, was felled only from the chariot. O disgusting one, why do you not praise that which is not to be praised?)

कृते रणे कथं पार्थ ज्वलनार्कविषोपमम्। भीमं द्रोणशिरश्छेदे प्रशस्यं न प्रशंससि ॥७-१६८-३३॥
kṛte raṇe kathaṃ pārtha jvalanārkaviṣopamam। bhīmaṃ droṇaśiraśchede praśasyaṃ na praśaṃsasi ॥7-168-33॥
[कृते (kṛte) - when done; रणे (raṇe) - in battle; कथं (kathaṃ) - how; पार्थ (pārtha) - O son of Pritha; ज्वलन (jvalana) - fire; अर्क (arka) - sun; विष (viṣa) - poison; उपमम् (upamam) - like; भीमम् (bhīmam) - Bhima; द्रोण (droṇa) - Drona; शिरः (śiraḥ) - head; छेदे (chede) - in cutting; प्रशस्यं (praśasyam) - praiseworthy; न (na) - not; प्रशंससि (praśaṃsasi) - you praise;]
(When done in battle, how, O son of Pritha, like fire, sun, and poison, Bhima in cutting Drona's head, praiseworthy, you do not praise.)
O son of Pritha, how is it that you do not praise Bhima, who is like fire, sun, and poison, for his praiseworthy act of cutting off Drona's head in battle?
योऽसौ ममैव नान्यस्य बान्धवान्युधि जघ्निवान्। छित्त्वापि तस्य मूर्धानं नैवास्मि विगतज्वरः ॥७-१६८-३४॥
yo'sau mamaiva nānyasya bāndhavānyudhi jaghnivān। chittvāpi tasya mūrdhānaṃ naivāsmi vigatajvaraḥ ॥7-168-34॥
[यः (yaḥ) - who; असौ (asau) - that; मम (mama) - my; एव (eva) - only; न (na) - not; अन्यस्य (anyasya) - another's; बान्धवान् (bāndhavān) - relatives; युधि (yudhi) - in battle; जघ्निवान् (jaghnivān) - killed; छित्त्वा (chittvā) - having cut off; अपि (api) - even; तस्य (tasya) - his; मूर्धानम् (mūrdhānam) - head; न (na) - not; एव (eva) - indeed; अस्मि (asmi) - am; विगतज्वरः (vigatajvaraḥ) - free from fever;]
(He who, in battle, killed my relatives and not another's, even having cut off his head, I am not free from fever.)
Even after slaying my own kin in battle, and severing his head, I find no relief from my anguish.
तच्च मे कृन्तते मर्म यन्न तस्य शिरो मया। निषादविषये क्षिप्तं जयद्रथशिरो यथा ॥७-१६८-३५॥
tacca me kṛntate marma yanna tasya śiro mayā। niṣādaviṣaye kṣiptaṃ jayadrathaśiro yathā ॥7-168-35॥
[तत् (tat) - that; च (ca) - and; मे (me) - my; कृन्तते (kṛntate) - cuts; मर्म (marma) - vital part; यत् (yat) - which; न (na) - not; तस्य (tasya) - his; शिरः (śiraḥ) - head; मया (mayā) - by me; निषादविषये (niṣādaviṣaye) - in the region of Niṣāda; क्षिप्तम् (kṣiptam) - thrown; जयद्रथशिरः (jayadrathaśiraḥ) - Jayadratha's head; यथा (yathā) - as; ॥७-१६८-३५॥ (॥7-168-35॥) - (verse number);]
(And that cuts my vital part, which is not his head by me, thrown in the region of Niṣāda, as Jayadratha's head.)
"And that pierces my heart, as his head was not severed by me and thrown into the region of Niṣāda, like Jayadratha's head."
अवधश्चापि शत्रूणामधर्मः शिष्यतेऽर्जुन। क्षत्रियस्य ह्ययं धर्मो हन्याद्धन्येत वा पुनः ॥७-१६८-३६॥
avadhaścāpi śatrūṇāmadharmaḥ śiṣyate'rjuna। kṣatriyasya hyayaṃ dharmo hanyāddhanyeta vā punaḥ ॥7-168-36॥
[अवधः (avadhaḥ) - killing; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; शत्रूणाम् (śatrūṇām) - of enemies; अधर्मः (adharmaḥ) - unrighteousness; शिष्यते (śiṣyate) - remains; अर्जुन (arjuna) - O Arjuna; क्षत्रियस्य (kṣatriyasya) - of a Kshatriya; हि (hi) - indeed; अयम् (ayam) - this; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - duty; हन्यात् (hanyāt) - should kill; हन्येत (hanyeta) - be killed; वा (vā) - or; पुनः (punaḥ) - again;]
(The killing of enemies is also unrighteousness, O Arjuna. Indeed, this is the duty of a Kshatriya, to kill or be killed again.)
O Arjuna, the killing of enemies is considered unrighteousness. However, for a Kshatriya, this is indeed the duty, to either kill or be killed in return.
स शत्रुर्निहतः सङ्ख्ये मया धर्मेण पाण्डव। यथा त्वया हतः शूरो भगदत्तः पितुः सखा ॥७-१६८-३७॥
sa śatrurnihataḥ saṅkhye mayā dharmeṇa pāṇḍava। yathā tvayā hataḥ śūro bhagadattaḥ pituḥ sakhā ॥7-168-37॥
[स (sa) - he; शत्रुः (śatruḥ) - enemy; निहतः (nihataḥ) - killed; सङ्ख्ये (saṅkhye) - in battle; मया (mayā) - by me; धर्मेण (dharmeṇa) - righteously; पाण्डव (pāṇḍava) - O son of Pāṇḍu; यथा (yathā) - just as; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; हतः (hataḥ) - was killed; शूरः (śūraḥ) - heroic; भगदत्तः (bhagadattaḥ) - Bhagadatta; पितुः (pituḥ) - of father; सखा (sakhā) - friend;]
(He, the enemy, was killed in battle by me righteously, O son of Pāṇḍu, just as the heroic Bhagadatta, the friend of your father, was killed by you.)
I have righteously slain the enemy in battle, O son of Pāṇḍu, just as you have slain the heroic Bhagadatta, the friend of your father.
पितामहं रणे हत्वा मन्यसे धर्ममात्मनः। मया शत्रौ हते कस्मात्पापे धर्मं न मन्यसे ॥७-१६८-३८॥
pitāmahaṃ raṇe hatvā manyase dharmamātmanaḥ। mayā śatrau hate kasmātpāpe dharmaṃ na manyase ॥7-168-38॥
[पितामहम् (pitāmaham) - grandfather; रणे (raṇe) - in battle; हत्वा (hatvā) - having killed; मन्यसे (manyase) - you think; धर्मम् (dharmam) - righteousness; आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - of yourself; मया (mayā) - by me; शत्रौ (śatrau) - enemy; हते (hate) - having been killed; कस्मात् (kasmāt) - why; पापे (pāpe) - sinful; धर्मम् (dharmam) - righteousness; न (na) - not; मन्यसे (manyase) - you think;]
(Having killed the grandfather in battle, you think of yourself as righteous. By me, when the enemy is killed, why do you not think of righteousness in the sinful?)
You consider yourself righteous after killing the grandfather in battle. Why do you not consider righteousness when I kill the enemy, even if he is sinful?
नानृतः पाण्डवो ज्येष्ठो नाहं वाधार्मिकोऽर्जुन। शिष्यध्रुङ्निहतः पापो युध्यस्व विजयस्तव ॥७-१६८-३९॥
nānaṛtaḥ pāṇḍavo jyeṣṭho nāhaṃ vādhārmiko'rjuna। śiṣyadhruṅnihataḥ pāpo yudhyasva vijayastava ॥7-168-39॥
[न (na) - not; अनृतः (aṛtaḥ) - untruthful; पाण्डवः (pāṇḍavaḥ) - Pāṇḍava; ज्येष्ठः (jyeṣṭhaḥ) - eldest; न (na) - not; अहम् (aham) - I; वा (vā) - or; अधार्मिकः (adhārmikaḥ) - unrighteous; अर्जुन (arjuna) - Arjuna; शिष्य (śiṣya) - disciple; ध्रुङ् (dhruṅ) - firm; निहतः (nihataḥ) - killed; पापः (pāpaḥ) - sinful; युध्यस्व (yudhyasva) - fight; विजयः (vijayaḥ) - victory; तव (tava) - your;]
(Not untruthful is the Pāṇḍava, the eldest, nor am I unrighteous, O Arjuna. The disciple firm, killed is sinful. Fight, victory is yours.)
The eldest Pāṇḍava is not untruthful, nor am I unrighteous, O Arjuna. The firm disciple has been killed, and the sinful one is defeated. Engage in battle, for victory is yours.
