साङ्गा वेदा यथान्यायं येनाधीता महात्मना। यस्मिन्साक्षाद्धनुर्वेदो ह्रीनिषेधे प्रतिष्ठितः ॥७-१६९-१॥
sāṅgā vedā yathānyāyaṃ yenādhītā mahātmanā। yasminsākṣāddhanurvedo hrīniṣedhe pratiṣṭhitaḥ ॥7-169-1॥
[साङ्गा (sāṅgā) - with limbs; वेदाः (vedāḥ) - Vedas; यथा (yathā) - as; न्यायं (nyāyaṃ) - justice; येन (yena) - by whom; अधीता (adhītā) - studied; महात्मना (mahātmanā) - by the great soul; यस्मिन् (yasmin) - in whom; साक्षात् (sākṣāt) - directly; धनुर्वेदः (dhanurvedaḥ) - Dhanurveda; ह्री (hrī) - modesty; निषेधे (niṣedhe) - in prohibition; प्रतिष्ठितः (pratiṣṭhitaḥ) - established;]
(With limbs, the Vedas, as justice, by whom studied, by the great soul, in whom directly the Dhanurveda, modesty in prohibition, is established.)
The Vedas, along with their limbs, were studied according to justice by the great soul in whom the Dhanurveda is directly established with modesty and prohibition.
तस्मिन्नाक्रुश्यति द्रोणे महर्षितनये तदा। नीचात्मना नृशंसेन क्षुद्रेण गुरुघातिना ॥७-१६९-२॥
tasminnākruśyati droṇe maharṣitanaye tadā। nīcātmanā nṛśaṁsena kṣudreṇa gurughātinā ॥7-169-2॥
[तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; आक्रुश्यति (ākruśyati) - lamenting; द्रोणे (droṇe) - in Droṇa; महर्षि (maharṣi) - great sage; तनये (tanaye) - son; तदा (tadā) - then; नीचात्मना (nīcātmanā) - by the vile soul; नृशंसेन (nṛśaṁsena) - by the cruel one; क्षुद्रेण (kṣudreṇa) - by the mean one; गुरुघातिना (gurughātinā) - by the teacher's killer;]
(In that, lamenting in Droṇa, the son of the great sage, then by the vile soul, by the cruel one, by the mean one, by the teacher's killer.)
At that time, lamenting over Droṇa, the son of the great sage, was killed by the vile, cruel, and mean soul, the teacher's killer.
यस्य प्रसादात्कर्माणि कुर्वन्ति पुरुषर्षभाः। अमानुषाणि सङ्ग्रामे देवैरसुकराणि च ॥७-१६९-३॥
yasya prasādāt karmāṇi kurvanti puruṣarṣabhāḥ। amānuṣāṇi saṅgrāme devair asukarāṇi ca ॥7-169-3॥
[यस्य (yasya) - by whose; प्रसादात् (prasādāt) - grace; कर्माणि (karmāṇi) - actions; कुर्वन्ति (kurvanti) - perform; पुरुषर्षभाः (puruṣarṣabhāḥ) - best among men; अमानुषाणि (amānuṣāṇi) - superhuman; सङ्ग्रामे (saṅgrāme) - in battle; देवैः (devaiḥ) - by gods; असुकराणि (asukarāṇi) - difficult; च (ca) - and;]
(By whose grace, the best among men perform actions that are superhuman and difficult even for the gods in battle.)

तस्मिन्नाक्रुश्यति द्रोणे समक्षं पापकर्मिणः। नामर्षं तत्र कुर्वन्ति धिक्क्षत्रं धिगमर्षितम् ॥७-१६९-४॥
tasminnākruśyati droṇe samakṣaṃ pāpakarmiṇaḥ। nāmarṣaṃ tatra kurvanti dhikkṣatraṃ dhigamarṣitam ॥7-169-4॥
[तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; आक्रुश्यति (ākruśyati) - shouting; द्रोणे (droṇe) - in Drona; समक्षं (samakṣaṃ) - in front of; पापकर्मिणः (pāpakarmiṇaḥ) - evil-doers; नामर्षं (nāmarṣaṃ) - intolerant; तत्र (tatra) - there; कुर्वन्ति (kurvanti) - do; धिक् (dhik) - shame; क्षत्रं (kṣatraṃ) - Kshatriya; धिक् (dhik) - shame; अमर्षितम् (amarṣitam) - impatience;]
(In that, shouting in front of Drona, the evil-doers do intolerant acts there. Shame on the Kshatriyas, shame on their impatience.)
In that situation, the evil-doers, shouting in front of Drona, act intolerantly. Shame on the Kshatriyas and their impatience.
पार्थाः सर्वे च राजानः पृथिव्यां ये धनुर्धराः। श्रुत्वा किमाहुः पाञ्चाल्यं तन्ममाचक्ष्व सञ्जय ॥७-१६९-५॥
pārthāḥ sarve ca rājānaḥ pṛthivyāṃ ye dhanurdharāḥ। śrutvā kimāhuḥ pāñcālyaṃ tanmamācakṣva sañjaya ॥7-169-5॥
[पार्थाः (pārthāḥ) - sons of Pṛthā; सर्वे (sarve) - all; च (ca) - and; राजानः (rājānaḥ) - kings; पृथिव्यां (pṛthivyāṃ) - on earth; ये (ye) - who; धनुर्धराः (dhanurdharāḥ) - archers; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; किम् (kim) - what; आहुः (āhuḥ) - said; पाञ्चाल्यम् (pāñcālyam) - to Draupadī; तत् (tat) - that; मम (mama) - to me; आचक्ष्व (ācakṣva) - tell; सञ्जय (sañjaya) - Sañjaya;]
(The sons of Pṛthā, all the kings on earth who are archers, having heard, what did they say to Draupadī? Tell that to me, Sañjaya.)
Sañjaya, tell me what all the kings and the sons of Pṛthā, who are archers on earth, said to Draupadī after hearing it.

श्रुत्वा द्रुपदपुत्रस्य ता वाचः क्रूरकर्मणः। तूष्णीं बभूवू राजानः सर्व एव विशां पते ॥७-१६९-६॥
śrutvā drupadaputrasya tā vācaḥ krūrakarmaṇaḥ। tūṣṇīṃ babhūvū rājānaḥ sarva eva viśāṃ pate ॥7-169-6॥

(Having heard those words of Drupada's son, of the cruel act, all the kings indeed became silent, O lord of the people.)
Upon hearing the harsh words of Drupada's son, all the kings fell silent, O lord of the people.
अर्जुनस्तु कटाक्षेण जिह्मं प्रेक्ष्य च पार्षतम्। सबाष्पमभिनिःश्वस्य धिग्धिग्धिगिति चाब्रवीत् ॥७-१६९-७॥
arjunastu kaṭākṣeṇa jihmaṃ prekṣya ca pārṣatam। sabāṣpamabhiniḥśvasya dhigdhigdhigiti cābravīt ॥7-169-7॥
[अर्जुनः (arjunaḥ) - Arjuna; तु (tu) - but; कटाक्षेण (kaṭākṣeṇa) - with a sidelong glance; जिह्मम् (jihmam) - crookedly; प्रेक्ष्य (prekṣya) - having looked; च (ca) - and; पार्षतम् (pārṣatam) - at Pārṣata (the son of Prishata, i.e., Dhrishtadyumna); सबाष्पम् (sabāṣpam) - with tears; अभिनिःश्वस्य (abhiniḥśvasya) - sighing deeply; धिक् (dhik) - shame; धिक् (dhik) - shame; धिक् (dhik) - shame; इति (iti) - thus; च (ca) - and; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said;]
(Arjuna, but with a sidelong glance, having looked crookedly at Pārṣata, with tears, sighing deeply, said 'shame, shame, shame'.)

युधिष्ठिरश्च भीमश्च यमौ कृष्णस्तथापरे। आसन्सुव्रीडिता राजन्सात्यकिरिदमब्रवीत् ॥७-१६९-८॥
yudhiṣṭhiraśca bhīmaśca yamau kṛṣṇastathāpare। āsansuvrīḍitā rājansātyakiridamabravīt ॥7-169-8॥
[युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhishthira; च (ca) - and; भीमः (bhīmaḥ) - Bhima; च (ca) - and; यमौ (yamau) - the twins; कृष्णः (kṛṣṇaḥ) - Krishna; तथा (tathā) - and; अपरे (apare) - others; आसन (āsan) - were; सुव्रीडिताः (suvrīḍitāḥ) - embarrassed; राजन् (rājan) - O king; सात्यकिः (sātyakiḥ) - Satyaki; इदम् (idam) - this; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said;]

नेहास्ति पुरुषः कश्चिद्य इमं पापपूरुषम्। भाषमाणमकल्याणं शीघ्रं हन्यान्नराधमम् ॥७-१६९-९॥
nehāsti puruṣaḥ kaścidya imaṃ pāpapūruṣam। bhāṣamāṇamakalyāṇaṃ śīghraṃ hanyānnarādhamam ॥7-169-9॥
[न (na) - not; इह (iha) - here; अस्ति (asti) - is; पुरुषः (puruṣaḥ) - man; कश्चित् (kaścit) - any; यः (yaḥ) - who; इमम् (imam) - this; पाप (pāpa) - sinful; पूरुषम् (pūruṣam) - man; भाषमाणम् (bhāṣamāṇam) - speaking; अकल्याणम् (akalyāṇam) - unwholesome; शीघ्रम् (śīghram) - quickly; हन्यात् (hanyāt) - should kill; नराधमम् (narādhamam) - worst of men;]
(Here, there is no man who would not quickly kill this sinful, unwholesome speaking worst of men.)
There is no man here who would not quickly kill this sinful man speaking unwholesome words, the worst of men.
कथं च शतधा जिह्वा न ते मूर्धा च दीर्यते। गुरुमाक्रोशतः क्षुद्र न चाधर्मेण पात्यसे ॥७-१६९-१०॥
kathaṁ ca śatadhā jihvā na te mūrdhā ca dīryate। gurumākrośataḥ kṣudra na cādharmeṇa pātyase ॥7-169-10॥
[कथं (kathaṁ) - how; च (ca) - and; शतधा (śatadhā) - into a hundred pieces; जिह्वा (jihvā) - tongue; न (na) - not; ते (te) - your; मूर्धा (mūrdhā) - head; च (ca) - and; दीर्यते (dīryate) - splits; गुरुमाक्रोशतः (gurumākrośataḥ) - abusing the teacher; क्षुद्र (kṣudra) - wretched one; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; अधर्मेण (adharmeṇa) - by unrighteousness; पात्यसे (pātyase) - are you falling; ॥७-१६९-१०॥ (॥7-169-10॥) - (verse number);]
(How is it that your tongue does not split into a hundred pieces and your head does not split, wretched one, when you abuse the teacher and are not falling by unrighteousness?)

याप्यस्त्वमसि पार्थैश्च सर्वैश्चान्धकवृष्णिभिः। यत्कर्म कलुषं कृत्वा श्लाघसे जनसंसदि ॥७-१६९-११॥
yāpyastvamasi pārthaiśca sarvaiścāndhakavṛṣṇibhiḥ। yatkarma kaluṣaṃ kṛtvā ślāghase janasaṃsadi ॥7-169-11॥
[याप्यः (yāpyaḥ) - pervading; त्वम् (tvam) - you; असि (asi) - are; पार्थैः (pārthaiḥ) - by the sons of Pritha; च (ca) - and; सर्वैः (sarvaiḥ) - all; च (ca) - and; अन्धकवृष्णिभिः (andhakavṛṣṇibhiḥ) - by the Andhakas and Vrishnis; यत् (yat) - which; कर्म (karma) - action; कलुषं (kaluṣaṃ) - sinful; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having done; श्लाघसे (ślāghase) - you boast; जनसंसदि (janasaṃsadi) - in the assembly of people;]
(You are pervading, by the sons of Pritha and all the Andhakas and Vrishnis; having done which sinful action, you boast in the assembly of people.)
You are supported by the sons of Pritha and all the Andhakas and Vrishnis; yet, having committed a sinful act, you boast about it in the assembly of people.
अकार्यं तादृशं कृत्वा पुनरेव गुरुं क्षिपन्। वध्यस्त्वं न त्वयार्थोऽस्ति मुहूर्तमपि जीवता ॥७-१६९-१२॥
akāryaṃ tādṛśaṃ kṛtvā punareva guruṃ kṣipan। vadhyastvaṃ na tvayārtho'sti muhūrtamapi jīvatā ॥7-169-12॥
[अकार्यं (akāryam) - improper act; तादृशं (tādṛśam) - such; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having done; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; एव (eva) - indeed; गुरुं (guruṃ) - the teacher; क्षिपन् (kṣipan) - insulting; वध्यः (vadhyaḥ) - deserving death; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; न (na) - not; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; अर्थः (arthaḥ) - purpose; अस्ति (asti) - is; मुहूर्तमपि (muhūrtamapi) - even for a moment; जीवता (jīvatā) - living;]
(Having done such an improper act, insulting the teacher again, you deserve death; there is no purpose for you living even for a moment.)

कस्त्वेतद्व्यवसेदार्यस्त्वदन्यः पुरुषाधमः। निगृह्य केशेषु वधं गुरोर्धर्मात्मनः सतः ॥७-१६९-१३॥
kastvetadvyavasedāryastvadanyaḥ puruṣādhamaḥ। nigṛhya keśeṣu vadhaṃ gurordharmātmanaḥ sataḥ ॥7-169-13॥
[कः (kaḥ) - who; त्वेतद् (tv-etad) - you-this; व्यवसेद् (vyavased) - decide; आर्य (ārya) - noble one; त्वदन्यः (tvadanyaḥ) - other than you; पुरुषाधमः (puruṣādhamaḥ) - worst of men; निगृह्य (nigṛhya) - having seized; केशेषु (keśeṣu) - by the hair; वधं (vadham) - killing; गुरोः (guroḥ) - of the teacher; धर्मात्मनः (dharmātmanaḥ) - righteous; सतः (sataḥ) - of the being;]
(Who are you to decide this, noble one, other than you, the worst of men, having seized by the hair, the killing of the righteous teacher?)

सप्तावरे तथा पूर्वे बान्धवास्ते निपातिताः। यशसा च परित्यक्तास्त्वां प्राप्य कुलपांसनम् ॥७-१६९-१४॥
saptāvare tathā pūrve bāndhavāste nipātitāḥ। yaśasā ca parityaktāstvāṃ prāpya kulapāṃsanam ॥7-169-14॥
[सप्त (sapta) - seven; अवरे (avare) - inferior; तथा (tathā) - also; पूर्वे (pūrve) - former; बान्धवाः (bāndhavāḥ) - relatives; ते (te) - they; निपातिताः (nipātitāḥ) - were killed; यशसा (yaśasā) - by fame; च (ca) - and; परित्यक्ताः (parityaktāḥ) - abandoned; त्वां (tvāṃ) - you; प्राप्य (prāpya) - having obtained; कुलपांसनम् (kulapāṃsanam) - disgrace of the family;]
(Seven inferior and former relatives were killed. Abandoned by fame, having obtained you, the disgrace of the family.)

उक्तवांश्चापि यत्पार्थं भीष्मं प्रति नरर्षभम्। तथान्तो विहितस्तेन स्वयमेव महात्मना ॥७-१६९-१५॥

[उक्तवान् (uktavān) - said; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; यत् (yat) - that; पार्थम् (pārtham) - to Arjuna; भीष्मम् (bhīṣmam) - to Bhishma; प्रति (prati) - towards; नरर्षभम् (nararṣabham) - O best of men; तथा (tathā) - thus; अन्तः (antaḥ) - end; विहितः (vihitaḥ) - arranged; तेन (tena) - by him; स्वयम् (svayam) - himself; एव (eva) - indeed; महात्मना (mahātmanā) - by the great soul;]
(And also what was said to Arjuna towards Bhishma, O best of men, thus the end was arranged by him himself, indeed, by the great soul.)
The great soul himself arranged the end as he had spoken to Arjuna regarding Bhishma, O best of men.
तस्यापि तव सोदर्यो निहन्ता पापकृत्तमः। नान्यः पाञ्चालपुत्रेभ्यो विद्यते भुवि पापकृत् ॥७-१६९-१६॥
tasyāpi tava sodaryo nihantā pāpakṛttamaḥ। nānyaḥ pāñcālaputrebhyo vidyate bhuvi pāpakṛt ॥7-169-16॥
[तस्य (tasya) - his; अपि (api) - also; तव (tava) - your; सodar्यः (sodaryaḥ) - brother; निहन्ता (nihantā) - killer; पापकृत्तमः (pāpakṛttamaḥ) - most sinful; न (na) - not; अन्यः (anyaḥ) - other; पाञ्चालपुत्रेभ्यः (pāñcālaputrebhyaḥ) - than the sons of Pāñcāla; विद्यते (vidyate) - exists; भुवि (bhuvi) - on earth; पापकृत् (pāpakṛt) - sinner;]
(His brother, the most sinful killer, is also yours. There is no other sinner on earth than the sons of Pāñcāla.)

स चापि सृष्टः पित्रा ते भीष्मस्यान्तकरः किल। शिखण्डी रक्षितस्तेन स च मृत्युर्महात्मनः ॥७-१६९-१७॥
sa cāpi sṛṣṭaḥ pitrā te bhīṣmasyāntakaraḥ kila। śikhaṇḍī rakṣitastena sa ca mṛtyurmahātmanaḥ ॥7-169-17॥
[स (sa) - he; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; सृष्टः (sṛṣṭaḥ) - created; पित्रा (pitrā) - by the father; ते (te) - your; भीष्मस्य (bhīṣmasya) - of Bhishma; अन्तकरः (antakaraḥ) - the end-maker; किल (kila) - indeed; शिखण्डी (śikhaṇḍī) - Shikhandi; रक्षितः (rakṣitaḥ) - protected; तेन (tena) - by him; स (sa) - he; च (ca) - and; मृत्युः (mṛtyuḥ) - death; महात्मनः (mahātmanaḥ) - of the great soul;]
(And he, created by your father, indeed was the end-maker of Bhishma. Shikhandi, protected by him, was the death of the great soul.)

पाञ्चालाश्चलिता धर्मात्क्षुद्रा मित्रगुरुद्रुहः। त्वां प्राप्य सहसोदर्यं धिक्कृतं सर्वसाधुभिः ॥७-१६९-१८॥
pāñcālāścalitā dharmātkṣudrā mitragurudruhaḥ। tvāṃ prāpya sahasodaryaṃ dhikkṛtaṃ sarvasādhubhiḥ ॥7-169-18॥
[पाञ्चालाः (pāñcālāḥ) - Panchalas; चलिता (calitā) - deviated; धर्मात् (dharmāt) - from righteousness; क्षुद्राः (kṣudrāḥ) - mean; मित्रगुरुद्रुहः (mitragurudruhaḥ) - betrayers of friends and teachers; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; प्राप्य (prāpya) - having obtained; सहसोदर्यम् (sahasodaryam) - brotherhood; धिक्कृतम् (dhikkṛtam) - condemned; सर्वसाधुभिः (sarvasādhubhiḥ) - by all virtuous people;]
(The Panchalas, having deviated from righteousness, mean and betrayers of friends and teachers, having obtained you as a brother, are condemned by all virtuous people.)
The Panchalas, who have strayed from the path of righteousness and are considered mean and treacherous to friends and teachers, are condemned by all virtuous people for having you as a brother.
पुनश्चेदीदृशीं वाचं मत्समीपे वदिष्यसि। शिरस्ते पातयिष्यामि गदया वज्रकल्पया ॥७-१६९-१९॥
punaścedīdṛśīṃ vācaṃ matsamīpe vadiṣyasi। śiraste pātayiṣyāmi gadayā vajrakalpayā ॥7-169-19॥
[पुनः (punaḥ) - again; च (ca) - and; ईदृशीं (īdṛśīṃ) - such; वाचं (vācaṃ) - speech; मत्समीपे (matsamīpe) - in my presence; वदिष्यसि (vadiṣyasi) - you will speak; शिरः (śiraḥ) - head; ते (te) - your; पातयिष्यामि (pātayiṣyāmi) - I will cause to fall; गदया (gadayā) - with a mace; वज्रकल्पया (vajrakalpayā) - like a thunderbolt;]
(If you speak such words in my presence again, I will cause your head to fall with a mace like a thunderbolt.)
If you dare to utter such words before me again, I shall strike your head down with a mace as powerful as a thunderbolt.
सात्वतेनैवमाक्षिप्तः पार्षतः परुषाक्षरम्। संरब्धः सात्यकिं प्राह सङ्क्रुद्धः प्रहसन्निव ॥७-१६९-२०॥
sātvatenaivamākṣiptaḥ pārṣataḥ paruṣākṣaram। saṃrabdhaḥ sātyakiṃ prāha saṅkruddhaḥ prahasanniva ॥7-169-20॥
[सात्वतेन (sātvatena) - by Sātvata; एवम् (evam) - thus; आक्षिप्तः (ākṣiptaḥ) - insulted; पार्षतः (pārṣataḥ) - Pārṣata; परुष (paruṣa) - harsh; अक्षरम् (akṣaram) - words; संरब्धः (saṃrabdhaḥ) - angry; सात्यकिं (sātyakiṃ) - to Sātyaki; प्राह (prāha) - said; सङ्क्रुद्धः (saṅkruddhaḥ) - enraged; प्रहसन्निव (prahasanniva) - as if smiling;]
(Insulted thus by Sātvata, Pārṣata, angry, said harsh words to Sātyaki, enraged, as if smiling.)
Insulted in this manner by Sātvata, Pārṣata, in anger, spoke harsh words to Sātyaki, appearing enraged yet smiling.
श्रूयते श्रूयते चेति क्षम्यते चेति माधव। न चानार्य शुभं साधुं पुरुषं क्षेप्तुमर्हसि ॥७-१६९-२१॥

व्यूहमानो मया द्रोणो दिव्येनास्त्रेण संयुगे। विसृष्टशस्त्रो निहतः किं तत्र क्रूर दुष्कृतम् ॥७-१६९-२५॥

(And indeed, a fool cannot achieve anything by righteousness alone. Also, hear what kind of actions they perform by unrighteousness.)

एवं परैराचरितं पाण्डवेयैश्च संयुगे। रक्षमाणैर्जयं वीरैर्धर्मज्ञैरपि सात्वत ॥७-१६९-३८॥
evaṃ parair ācaritaṃ pāṇḍaveyaiś ca saṃyuge। rakṣamāṇair jayaṃ vīrair dharmajñair api sātvata ॥7-169-38॥

[दुर्ज्ञेयः (durjñeyaḥ) - difficult to comprehend; परमः (paramaḥ) - supreme; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - dharma; तथा (tathā) - and; अधर्मः (adharmaḥ) - adharma; सुदुर्विदः (sudurvidaḥ) - very difficult to know; युध्यस्व (yudhyasva) - fight; कौरवैः (kauravaiḥ) - with the Kauravas; सार्धं (sārdham) - together; मा (mā) - do not; गाः (gāḥ) - go; पितृनिवेशनम् (pitṛniveśanam) - to the abode of the ancestors;]
(The supreme dharma is difficult to comprehend, and adharma is very difficult to know. Fight with the Kauravas together; do not go to the abode of the ancestors.)
The supreme principles of righteousness are hard to understand, just as unrighteousness is very difficult to discern. Engage in battle with the Kauravas; do not retreat to the abode of your ancestors.
एवमादीनि वाक्यानि क्रूराणि परुषाणि च। श्रावितः सात्यकिः श्रीमानाकम्पित इवाभवत् ॥७-१६९-४०॥
evamādīni vākyāni krūrāṇi paruṣāṇi ca। śrāvitaḥ sātyakiḥ śrīmānākampita ivābhavat ॥7-169-40॥

(Thus, beginning with harsh and cruel words, the glorious Satyaki, having heard, became as if unmoved.)

तच्छ्रुत्वा क्रोधताम्राक्षः सात्यकिस्त्वाददे गदाम्। विनिःश्वस्य यथा सर्पः प्रणिधाय रथे धनुः ॥७-१६९-४१॥
tacchrutvā krodhatāmrākṣaḥ sātyakistvādade gadām। viniḥśvasya yathā sarpaḥ praṇidhāya rathe dhanuḥ ॥7-169-41॥
