(Then, having seen Duryodhana standing in the midst of the horses, the son of Devaki said to the son of Kunti, Dhananjaya.)
Then, Lord Krishna, the son of Devaki, seeing Duryodhana positioned among the horses, spoke to Arjuna, the son of Kunti, also known as Dhananjaya.
शत्रवो हतभूयिष्ठा ज्ञातयः परिपालिताः। गृहीत्वा सञ्जयं चासौ निवृत्तः शिनिपुङ्गवः ॥९-२६-३॥
śatravo hatabhūyiṣṭhā jñātayaḥ paripālitāḥ। gṛhītvā sañjayaṃ cāsau nivṛttaḥ śinipuṅgavaḥ ॥9-26-3॥

(The enemies were mostly killed, the relatives were protected. Having taken Sanjaya, he, the best of the Shinis, returned.)

परिश्रान्तश्च नकुलः सहदेवश्च भारत। योधयित्वा रणे पापान्धार्तराष्ट्रपदानुगान् ॥९-२६-४॥

(Exhausted, Nakul and Sahadev, O Bharata, having fought in battle the wicked followers of Dhritarashtra's sons.)
Nakul and Sahadev, though exhausted, continued to fight valiantly in the battle against the wicked followers of Dhritarashtra's sons, O Bharata.
सुयोधनमभित्यज्य त्रय एते व्यवस्थिताः। कृपश्च कृतवर्मा च द्रौणिश्चैव महारथः ॥९-२६-५॥
suyodhanam abhityajya traya ete vyavasthitāḥ। kṛpaś ca kṛtavarmā ca drauṇiś caiva mahārathaḥ ॥9-26-5॥
[सुयोधनम् (suyodhanam) - Suyodhana; अभित्यज्य (abhityajya) - having abandoned; त्रयः (trayaḥ) - three; एते (ete) - these; व्यवस्थिताः (vyavasthitāḥ) - are positioned; कृपः (kṛpaḥ) - Kṛpa; च (ca) - and; कृतवर्मा (kṛtavarmā) - Kṛtavarmā; च (ca) - and; द्रौणिः (drauṇiḥ) - Drauṇi; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; महारथः (mahārathaḥ) - great chariot-warrior;]
(Having abandoned Suyodhana, these three are positioned: Kṛpa, Kṛtavarmā, and indeed Drauṇi, the great chariot-warrior.)
Having left Suyodhana, these three warriors, Kṛpa, Kṛtavarmā, and Drauṇi, stand ready as great chariot-warriors.
असौ तिष्ठति पाञ्चाल्यः श्रिया परमया युतः। दुर्योधनबलं हत्वा सह सर्वैः प्रभद्रकैः ॥९-२६-६॥
asau tiṣṭhati pāñcālyaḥ śriyā paramayā yutaḥ। duryodhanabalaṃ hatvā saha sarvaiḥ prabhadrakaiḥ ॥9-26-6॥

(This one, the Panchala prince, stands endowed with supreme splendor, having slain Duryodhana's forces with all the Prabhadrakas.)
The Panchala prince stands here, resplendent with supreme glory, having defeated Duryodhana's forces along with all the Prabhadrakas.
असौ दुर्योधनः पार्थ वाजिमध्ये व्यवस्थितः। छत्रेण ध्रियमाणेन प्रेक्षमाणो मुहुर्मुहुः ॥९-२६-७॥
asau duryodhanaḥ pārtha vājimadhye vyavasthitaḥ। chatreṇa dhriyamāṇena prekṣamāṇo muhurmuhuḥ ॥9-26-7॥

(This Duryodhana, O son of Pritha, is situated among the horses, with an umbrella being held, looking again and again.)
Duryodhana, standing among the horses, is repeatedly looking around with an umbrella held over him, O son of Pritha.
प्रतिव्यूह्य बलं सर्वं रणमध्ये व्यवस्थितः। एनं हत्वा शितैर्बाणैः कृतकृत्यो भविष्यसि ॥९-२६-८॥
prativyūhya balaṃ sarvaṃ raṇamadhye vyavasthitaḥ। enaṃ hatvā śitairbāṇaiḥ kṛtakṛtyo bhaviṣyasi ॥9-26-8॥
[प्रतिव्यूह्य (prativyūhya) - having arranged; बलं (balaṃ) - the force; सर्वं (sarvaṃ) - all; रणमध्ये (raṇamadhye) - in the midst of battle; व्यवस्थितः (vyavasthitaḥ) - being situated; एनं (enaṃ) - this one; हत्वा (hatvā) - having killed; शितैः (śitaiḥ) - sharp; बाणैः (bāṇaiḥ) - with arrows; कृतकृत्यः (kṛtakṛtyaḥ) - having accomplished the task; भविष्यसि (bhaviṣyasi) - you will become;]
(Having arranged all the forces and being situated in the midst of battle, having killed this one with sharp arrows, you will have accomplished the task.)
"Having strategically positioned all the forces in the battlefield, by killing this one with sharp arrows, you will achieve your mission."
गजानीकं हतं दृष्ट्वा त्वां च प्राप्तमरिंदम। यावन्न विद्रवन्त्येते तावज्जहि सुयोधनम् ॥९-२६-९॥
gajānīkaṃ hataṃ dṛṣṭvā tvāṃ ca prāptamariṃdama। yāvanna vidravantyete tāvajjahi suyodhanam ॥9-26-9॥
[गजानीकं (gajānīkam) - elephant-army; हतं (hatam) - slain; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; त्वां (tvām) - you; च (ca) - and; प्राप्तम् (prāptam) - arrived; अरिंदम (ariṃdama) - O subduer of enemies; यावत् (yāvat) - as long as; न (na) - not; विद्रवन्ति (vidravanti) - flee; एते (ete) - these; तावत् (tāvat) - until then; जहि (jahi) - slay; सुयोधनम् (suyodhanam) - Suyodhana;]
(Having seen the elephant-army slain and you arrived, O subduer of enemies, as long as these do not flee, slay Suyodhana until then.)
Upon witnessing the destruction of the elephant-army and your arrival, O subduer of enemies, ensure that Suyodhana is slain before these forces flee.
यातु कश्चित्तु पाञ्चाल्यं क्षिप्रमागम्यतामिति। परिश्रान्तबलस्तात नैष मुच्येत किल्बिषी ॥९-२६-१०॥
yātu kaścit tu pāñcālyaṃ kṣipram āgamyatām iti। pariśrānta-balas tāta naiṣa mucyeta kilbiṣī ॥9-26-10॥
[यातु (yātu) - let go; कश्चित् (kaścit) - someone; तु (tu) - but; पाञ्चाल्यम् (pāñcālyam) - to the land of the Panchalas; क्षिप्रम् (kṣipram) - quickly; आगम्यताम् (āgamyatām) - let him come; इति (iti) - thus; परिश्रान्तबलः (pariśrānta-balaḥ) - exhausted in strength; तात (tāta) - O dear; न (na) - not; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this one; मुच्येत (mucyeta) - should be released; किल्बिषी (kilbiṣī) - sinner;]
(Let someone quickly go to the land of the Panchalas and let him come, thus. O dear, exhausted in strength, this sinner should not be released.)

तव हत्वा बलं सर्वं सङ्ग्रामे धृतराष्ट्रजः। जितान्पाण्डुसुतान्मत्वा रूपं धारयते महत् ॥९-२६-११॥
tava hatvā balaṃ sarvaṃ saṅgrāme dhṛtarāṣṭrajaḥ। jitānpāṇḍusutānmatvā rūpaṃ dhārayate mahat ॥9-26-11॥
[तव (tava) - your; हत्वा (hatvā) - having killed; बलं (balaṃ) - strength; सर्वं (sarvaṃ) - all; सङ्ग्रामे (saṅgrāme) - in battle; धृतराष्ट्रजः (dhṛtarāṣṭrajaḥ) - son of Dhritarashtra; जितान् (jitān) - conquered; पाण्डुसुतान् (pāṇḍusutān) - sons of Pandu; मत्वा (matvā) - thinking; रूपं (rūpaṃ) - form; धारयते (dhārayate) - assumes; महत् (mahat) - great;]
(Having killed all your strength in battle, the son of Dhritarashtra, thinking he has conquered the sons of Pandu, assumes a great form.)
The son of Dhritarashtra, having slain all your forces in battle and believing he has defeated the sons of Pandu, takes on a grand appearance.
निहतं स्वबलं दृष्ट्वा पीडितं चापि पाण्डवैः। ध्रुवमेष्यति सङ्ग्रामे वधायैवात्मनो नृपः ॥९-२६-१२॥
nihataṁ svabalaṁ dṛṣṭvā pīḍitaṁ cāpi pāṇḍavaiḥ। dhruvameṣyati saṅgrāme vadhāyaivātmano nṛpaḥ ॥9-26-12॥
[निहतम् (nihatam) - killed; स्वबलम् (svabalam) - own army; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; पीडितम् (pīḍitam) - oppressed; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; पाण्डवैः (pāṇḍavaiḥ) - by the Pandavas; ध्रुवम् (dhruvam) - certainly; एष्यति (eṣyati) - will go; सङ्ग्रामे (saṅgrāme) - in battle; वधाय (vadhāya) - for the killing; एव (eva) - indeed; आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - of himself; नृपः (nṛpaḥ) - the king;]
(Having seen his own army killed and oppressed by the Pandavas, the king will certainly go to battle for his own killing.)
Seeing his own forces slain and harassed by the Pandavas, the king will surely enter the battle, seeking his own death.
एवमुक्तः फल्गुनस्तु कृष्णं वचनमब्रवीत्। धृतराष्ट्रसुताः सर्वे हता भीमेन मानद ॥ यावेतावास्थितौ कृष्ण तावद्य न भविष्यतः ॥९-२६-१३॥
evamuktaḥ phalgunastu kṛṣṇaṃ vacanamabravīt। dhṛtarāṣṭrasutāḥ sarve hatā bhīmena mānada ॥ yāvetāvāsthitau kṛṣṇa tāvadya na bhaviṣyataḥ ॥9-26-13॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - spoken; फल्गुनः (phalguṇaḥ) - Arjuna; तु (tu) - but; कृष्णम् (kṛṣṇam) - to Krishna; वचनम् (vacanam) - words; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; धृतराष्ट्रसुताः (dhṛtarāṣṭrasutāḥ) - sons of Dhritarashtra; सर्वे (sarve) - all; हताः (hatāḥ) - killed; भीमेन (bhīmena) - by Bhima; मानद (mānada) - O giver of honor; यावत् (yāvat) - as long as; एतौ (etau) - these two; आस्थितौ (āsthitau) - are standing; कृष्ण (kṛṣṇa) - O Krishna; तावत् (tāvat) - so long; अद्य (adya) - today; न (na) - not; भविष्यतः (bhaviṣyataḥ) - will be;]
(Thus spoken, Arjuna said to Krishna: "All the sons of Dhritarashtra have been killed by Bhima, O giver of honor. As long as these two are standing, O Krishna, so long today they will not be.")
Upon hearing this, Arjuna spoke to Krishna: "O Krishna, all the sons of Dhritarashtra have been slain by Bhima, O giver of honor. As long as these two remain standing, today they shall not be."
हतो भीष्मो हतो द्रोणः कर्णो वैकर्तनो हतः। मद्रराजो हतः शल्यो हतः कृष्ण जयद्रथः ॥९-२६-१४॥

(Bhishma is killed, Drona is killed, Karna, the son of Vikartana, is killed. The king of Madra, Shalya, is killed, Krishna, Jayadratha is killed.)
Bhishma, Drona, Karna, the son of Vikartana, the king of Madra Shalya, Krishna, and Jayadratha have all been slain.
हयाः पञ्चशताः शिष्टाः शकुनेः सौबलस्य च। रथानां तु शते शिष्टे द्वे एव तु जनार्दन ॥ दन्तिनां च शतं साग्रं त्रिसाहस्राः पदातयः ॥९-२६-१५॥
hayāḥ pañcaśatāḥ śiṣṭāḥ śakuneḥ saubalasya ca। rathānāṃ tu śate śiṣṭe dve eva tu janārdana ॥ dantināṃ ca śataṃ sāgraṃ trisāhasrāḥ padātayaḥ ॥9-26-15॥
[हयाः (hayāḥ) - horses; पञ्चशताः (pañcaśatāḥ) - five hundred; शिष्टाः (śiṣṭāḥ) - remaining; शकुनेः (śakuneḥ) - of Shakuni; सौबलस्य (saubalasya) - the son of Subala; च (ca) - and; रथानां (rathānāṃ) - of chariots; तु (tu) - but; शते (śate) - hundred; शिष्टे (śiṣṭe) - remaining; द्वे (dve) - two; एव (eva) - only; तु (tu) - but; जनार्दन (janārdana) - O Janardana; दन्तिनां (dantināṃ) - of elephants; च (ca) - and; शतं (śataṃ) - hundred; साग्रं (sāgraṃ) - with excess; त्रिसाहस्राः (trisāhasrāḥ) - three thousand; पदातयः (padātayaḥ) - infantry;]
(Horses, five hundred, remain of Shakuni, the son of Subala, and of chariots, but a hundred remain, only two, O Janardana. Of elephants, a hundred with excess, three thousand infantry.)

अश्वत्थामा कृपश्चैव त्रिगर्ताधिपतिस्तथा। उलूकः शकुनिश्चैव कृतवर्मा च सात्वतः ॥९-२६-१६॥

एतद्बलमभूच्छेषं धार्तराष्ट्रस्य माधव। मोक्षो न नूनं कालाद्धि विद्यते भुवि कस्यचित् ॥९-२६-१७॥
etadbalamabhūccheṣaṃ dhārtarāṣṭrasya mādhava। mokṣo na nūnaṃ kālāddhi vidyate bhuvi kasyacit ॥9-26-17॥
[एतत् (etat) - this; बलम् (balam) - strength; अभूत् (abhūt) - was; शेषम् (śeṣam) - remaining; धार्तराष्ट्रस्य (dhārtarāṣṭrasya) - of Dhritarashtra's sons; माधव (mādhava) - O Madhava; मोक्षः (mokṣaḥ) - liberation; न (na) - not; नूनम् (nūnam) - indeed; कालात् (kālāt) - from time; हि (hi) - certainly; विद्यते (vidyate) - exists; भुवि (bhuvi) - on earth; कस्यचित् (kasyacit) - of anyone;]
(This strength was the remaining of Dhritarashtra's sons, O Madhava. Liberation indeed does not exist from time for anyone on earth.)

तथा विनिहते सैन्ये पश्य दुर्योधनं स्थितम्। अद्याह्ना हि महाराजो हतामित्रो भविष्यति ॥९-२६-१८॥
tathā vinihate sainye paśya duryodhanaṃ sthitam। adyāhnā hi mahārājo hatāmitro bhaviṣyati ॥9-26-18॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; विनिहते (vinihate) - slain; सैन्ये (sainye) - army; पश्य (paśya) - see; दुर्योधनं (duryodhanam) - Duryodhana; स्थितम् (sthitam) - standing; अद्याह्ना (adyāhnā) - today; हि (hi) - indeed; महाराजो (mahārājo) - great king; हतामित्रो (hatāmitro) - enemy slain; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will become;]
(Thus, with the army slain, see Duryodhana standing. Today indeed the great king will become one whose enemy is slain.)
Thus, with the army defeated, behold Duryodhana standing firm. Today, indeed, the great king will have his enemies vanquished.
न हि मे मोक्ष्यते कश्चित्परेषामिति चिन्तये। ये त्वद्य समरं कृष्ण न हास्यन्ति रणोत्कटाः ॥ तान्वै सर्वान्हनिष्यामि यद्यपि स्युरमानुषाः ॥९-२६-१९॥
na hi me mokṣyate kaścitpareṣāmiti cintaye। ye tvadya samaraṃ kṛṣṇa na hāsyanti raṇotkaṭāḥ ॥ tānvai sarvānhaniṣyāmi yadyapi syuramānuṣāḥ ॥9-26-19॥
[न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; मे (me) - my; मोक्ष्यते (mokṣyate) - will be released; कश्चित् (kaścit) - anyone; परेषाम् (pareṣām) - of others; इति (iti) - thus; चिन्तये (cintaye) - I think; ये (ye) - who; तु (tu) - but; अद्य (adya) - today; समरम् (samaram) - battle; कृष्ण (kṛṣṇa) - O Krishna; न (na) - not; हास्यन्ति (hāsyanti) - will laugh; रणोत्कटाः (raṇotkaṭāḥ) - fierce warriors; तान् (tān) - them; वै (vai) - indeed; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; हनिष्यामि (haniṣyāmi) - I will slay; यद्यपि (yadyapi) - even if; स्युः (syuḥ) - they are; अमानुषाः (amānuṣāḥ) - non-human; ॥९-२६-१९॥ (॥9-26-19॥) - (verse number);]
(Indeed, I think that no one of others will be released. O Krishna, those fierce warriors who will not laugh today in battle, I will slay them all, even if they are non-human.)
I believe that none of my enemies will be spared. O Krishna, today in battle, those fierce warriors who do not laugh will all be slain by me, even if they are not human.
अद्य युद्धे सुसङ्क्रुद्धो दीर्घं राज्ञः प्रजागरम्। अपनेष्यामि गान्धारं पातयित्वा शितैः शरैः ॥९-२६-२०॥
