Pancharatra and Core: Praise for Bhima; Conversation between Duryodhana and Krishna; Duryodhana is honoured by a magnificent shower of fragrant flowers.
dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca॥
Dhritarashtra spoke:
hataṁ duryodhanaṁ dṛṣṭvā bhīmasenena saṁyuge। pāṇḍavāḥ sṛñjayāścaiva kimakurvata sañjaya ॥9-60-1॥
Upon witnessing the fall of Duryodhana at the hands of Bhimasena in the battle, what actions did the Pandavas and the Srinjayas take, O Sanjaya?
sañjaya uvāca॥
Sanjaya said.
hataṁ duryodhanaṁ dṛṣṭvā bhīmasenena saṁyuge। siṁheneva mahārāja mattaṁ vanagajaṁ vane ॥9-60-2॥
O great king, having witnessed Bhimasena slay Duryodhana in battle, it was akin to a lion overpowering an intoxicated elephant in the forest.
prahṛṣṭamanasastatra kṛṣṇena saha pāṇḍavāḥ। pāñcālāḥ sṛñjayāścaiva nihate kurunandane ॥9-60-3॥
The Pandavas, Panchalas, and Srinjayas, with joyful hearts, were there with Krishna, celebrating the fall of the Kuru prince.
āvidhyannuttarīyāṇi siṃhanādāṃśca nedire। naitānharṣasamāviṣṭāniyaṃ sehe vasundharā ॥9-60-4॥
The earth could not endure the people waving their upper garments and making lion-like roars, filled with joy.
dhanūṃṣyanye vyākṣipanta jyāścāpyanye tathākṣipan। dadhmuranye mahāśaṅkhānanye jaghnuśca dundubhīḥ ॥9-60-5॥
Some stretched their bows and others threw their bowstrings. Some blew mighty conches while others beat drums.
cikrīḍuśca tathaivānye jahasuśca tavāhitāḥ। abruvaṃścāsakṛdvīrā bhīmasenamidaṃ vacaḥ ॥9-60-6॥
The others, including your enemies, played and laughed, and the heroes repeatedly said these words to Bhimasena.
duṣkaraṃ bhavatā karma raṇe'dya sumahatkṛtam। kauravendraṃ raṇe hatvā gadayātikṛtaśramam ॥9-60-7॥
Today, you have accomplished a very difficult task in battle by slaying the Kaurava king with a mace, exerting yourself greatly.
indreṇeva hi vṛtrasya vadhaṃ paramasaṃyuge। tvayā kṛtamamanyanta śatrorvadhamimaṃ janāḥ ॥9-60-8॥
The people indeed thought that this act of killing the enemy was done by you, just like Indra's slaying of Vṛtra in the great battle.
carantaṁ vividhānmārgānmaṇḍalāni ca sarvaśaḥ। duryodhanamimaṁ śūraṁ ko'nyo hanyādvṛkodarāt ॥9-60-9॥
As Duryodhana wanders through various paths and circles, who else but Vrikodara could defeat this valiant hero?
vairasya ca gataḥ pāraṃ tvamihānyaiḥ sudurgamam। aśakyametadanyena sampādayitumīdṛśam ॥9-60-10॥
You have transcended enmity, achieving what is extremely difficult for others here. Such a feat cannot be accomplished by anyone else.
kuñjareṇeva mattena vīra saṅgrāmamūrdhani। duryodhanaśiro diṣṭyā pādena mṛditaṃ tvayā ॥9-60-11॥
O hero, like an intoxicated elephant in the forefront of the battle, you have fortunately crushed Duryodhana's head with your foot.
siṃhena mahiṣasyeva kṛtvā saṅgaramadbhutam। duḥśāsanasya rudhiraṃ diṣṭyā pītaṃ tvayānagha ॥9-60-12॥
Like a lion in a wonderful battle with a buffalo, you have fortunately drunk the blood of Duhshasana, O sinless one.
ye viprakurvanrājānaṃ dharmātmānaṃ yudhiṣṭhiram। mūrdhni teṣāṃ kṛtaḥ pādo diṣṭyā te svena karmaṇā ॥9-60-13॥
Those who offend the righteous King Yudhishthira have their heads placed under his foot, thanks to their own actions.
amitrāṇām adhiṣṭhānād vadhād duryodhanasya ca। bhīma diṣṭyā pṛthivyāṃ te prathitaṃ sumahad yaśaḥ ॥9-60-14॥
O Bhima, by fortune, your great fame is spread on earth due to the defeat of enemies and the killing of Duryodhana.
evaṁ nūnaṁ hate vṛtre śakraṁ nandanti bandinaḥ। tathā tvāṁ nihatāmitraṁ vayaṁ nandāma bhārata ॥9-60-15॥
"Thus, when Vritra is slain, the bards rejoice in Indra. Similarly, O Bharata, when your enemy is defeated, we too rejoice."
duryodhanavadhe yāni romāṇi hṛṣitāni naḥ। adyāpi na vihṛṣyanti tāni tadviddhi bhārata ॥ ityabruvanbhīmasenaṃ vātikāstatra saṅgatāḥ ॥9-60-16॥
The ascetics gathered there told Bhimasena that the thrill we felt during the killing of Duryodhana is no longer felt today, O Bharata.
tānhṛṣṭānpuruṣavyāghrānpāñcālānpāṇḍavaiḥ saha। bruvataḥ sadṛśaṃ tatra provāca madhusūdanaḥ ॥9-60-17॥
Madhusudana addressed the joyful Panchalas, who were like tigers among men, along with the Pandavas, speaking appropriately there.
na nyāyyaṃ nihataḥ śatrurbhūyo hantuṃ janādhipāḥ। asakṛdvāgbhirugrābhirnihato hyeṣa mandadhīḥ ॥9-60-18॥
The kings should not kill the enemy again unjustly. This foolish person has already been killed many times by harsh words.
tadaivaiṣa hataḥ pāpo yadaiva nirapatrapaḥ। lubdhaḥ pāpasahāyaśca suhṛdāṃ śāsanātigaḥ ॥9-60-19॥
At that very moment, this sinner meets his end when he becomes shameless, greedy, aligns with evil companions, and defies the commands of his friends.
bahuśo viduradroṇakṛpagāṅgeyasṛñjayaiḥ। pāṇḍubhyaḥ procyamāno'pi pitryamaṁśaṁ na dattavān ॥9-60-20॥
Despite being repeatedly urged by Vidura, Drona, Kripa, Bhishma, and the sons of Sṛñjaya, he refused to give the Pandavas their rightful paternal share.
naiṣa yogyo'dya mitraṃ vā śatrurvā puruṣādhamaḥ। kimanenātinunnena vāgbhiḥ kāṣṭhasadharmaṇā ॥9-60-21॥
Today, this worst of men is neither worthy as a friend nor as an enemy. What is the use of this one, who is overpowered by words and is like a log?
ratheṣvārohata kṣipraṃ gacchāmo vasudhādhipāḥ। diṣṭyā hato'yaṃ pāpātmā sāmātyajñātibāndhavaḥ ॥9-60-22॥
"Ascend the chariots quickly, O kings, let us proceed. Fortunately, this wicked soul has been slain along with his ministers, relatives, and friends."
iti śrutvā tvadhikṣepaṃ kṛṣṇādduryodhano nṛpaḥ। amarṣavaśamāpanna udatiṣṭhadviśāṃ pate ॥9-60-23॥
Upon hearing your reproach from Krishna, King Duryodhana, filled with anger, rose up, O lord of the people.
sphigdeśenopaviṣṭaḥ sa dorbhyāṃ viṣṭabhya medinīm। dṛṣṭiṃ bhrūsaṅkaṭāṃ kṛtvā vāsudeve nyapātayat ॥9-60-24॥
He sat down, supporting the earth with his arms, and with a fierce gaze and knitted eyebrows, he looked at Vasudeva.
ardhonnataśarīrasya rūpam āsīn nṛpasya tat। kruddhasyāśīviṣasyeva chinnapucchasya bhārata ॥9-60-25॥
The king's appearance was half-raised, resembling an angry serpent with its tail cut off, O Bhārata.
prāṇāntakaraṇīṃ ghorāṃ vedanāmavicintayan। duryodhano vāsudevaṃ vāgbhirugrābhirārdayat ॥9-60-26॥
Duryodhana, without considering the terrible pain that could cause death, harshly tormented Vasudeva with his words.
kaṁsadāsasya dāyāda na te lajjāsty anena vai। adharmeṇa gadāyuddhe yad ahaṁ vinipātitaḥ ॥9-60-27॥
As the heir of Kamsa's servant, you indeed have no shame in this. I have been unrighteously felled in the mace battle.
ūrū bhindhīti bhīmasya smṛtiṃ mithyā prayacchatā। kiṃ na vijñātametanmeyadarjunamavocathāḥ ॥9-60-28॥
The false memory of Bhima's thighs breaking was given. What is it that I do not know, which you spoke of Arjuna?
ghātayitvā mahīpālānṛjuyuddhānsahasraśaḥ। jihmairupāyairbahubhirna te lajjā na te ghṛṇā ॥9-60-29॥
After having slain thousands of kings in fair battles, you feel no shame nor compassion, employing numerous deceitful strategies.
ahanyahani śūrāṇāṃ kurvāṇaḥ kadanaṃ mahat। śikhaṇḍinaṃ puraskṛtya ghātitaste pitāmahaḥ ॥9-60-30॥
Day by day, your grandfather was killed while doing great slaughter of the heroes, with Shikhandi placed in front.
aśvatthāmnaḥ sanāmānaṃ hatvā nāgaṃ sudurmate। ācāryo nyāsitaḥ śastraṃ kiṃ tanna viditaṃ mama ॥9-60-31॥
The teacher, having killed the elephant named Ashvatthama, laid down his weapon. O wicked-minded one, what about that is unknown to me?
sa cānena nṛśaṃsena dhṛṣṭadyumnena vīryavān। pātyamānastvayā dṛṣṭo na cainaṃ tvamavārayaḥ ॥9-60-32॥
He, the mighty warrior, was being struck down by the cruel Dhrishtadyumna. You witnessed it and did nothing to stop him.
vadhārthaṃ pāṇḍuputrasya yācitāṃ śaktimeva ca। ghaṭotkace vyaṃsayathāḥ kastvattaḥ pāpakṛttamaḥ ॥9-60-33॥
In order to kill the son of Pandu, you used the power that was requested on Ghatotkacha. Who could be more sinful than you?
chinnabāhuḥ prāyagatastathā bhūriśravā balī। tvayā nisṛṣṭena hataḥ śaineyena durātmanā ॥9-60-34॥
With his arm severed and near death, the mighty Bhūriśravā was slain by the wicked Śaineya, who was set upon him by you.
kurvāṇaścottamaṃ karma karṇaḥ pārthajigīṣayā। vyaṃsanenāśvasenasya pannagendrasutasya vai ॥9-60-35॥
Karna, in his quest to defeat Arjuna, performed great deeds, but was indeed affected by the disaster involving Ashvasena, the son of the serpent king.
punaśca patite cakre vyasanārtaḥ parājitaḥ। pātitaḥ samare karṇaścakravyagro'graṇīrnṛṇām ॥9-60-36॥
Once more, as the wheel fell, Karṇa, distressed and defeated, was struck down in battle while he was preoccupied with the wheel, being the foremost among men.
yadi māṁ cāpi karṇaṁ ca bhīṣmadroṇau ca saṁyuge। ṛjunā pratiyudhyethā na te syādvijayo dhruvam ॥9-60-37॥
If you were to engage in battle against me, Karṇa, Bhīṣma, and Droṇa, led by Arjuna, your victory would not be assured.
tvayā punar anāryeṇa jihmamārgeṇa pārthivāḥ। svadharmam anutiṣṭhanto vayaṃ cānye ca ghātitāḥ ॥9-60-38॥
By you, once more, through ignoble and deceitful means, the kings who were following their own duty, along with us and others, have been killed.
vāsudeva uvāca॥
Vasudeva said.
hatastvamasi gāndhāre sabhrātṛsutabāndhavaḥ। sagaṇaḥ sasuhṛccaiva pāpamārgamanuṣṭhitaḥ ॥9-60-39॥
You, O Gandhari, along with your brothers, sons, relatives, followers, and friends, have been destroyed for following the path of sin.
tavaiva duṣkṛtairvīrau bhīṣmadroṇau nipātitau। karṇaśca nihataḥ saṅkhye tava śīlānuvartakaḥ ॥9-60-40॥
Due to your misdeeds, the great warriors Bhishma and Drona were brought down. Karna, who followed your conduct, was also slain in the battle.
yācyamāno mayā mūḍha pitryamaṁśaṁ na ditsasi। pāṇḍavebhyaḥ svarājyārdhaṁ lobhācchakuniniścayāt ॥9-60-41॥
"Foolish one, despite my request, you refuse to give the Pandavas their paternal share, half of your own kingdom, driven by greed and Shakuni's counsel."
viṣaṃ te bhīmasenāya dattaṃ sarve ca pāṇḍavāḥ। pradīpitā jatugṛhe mātrā saha sudurmate ॥9-60-42॥
"Poison was administered to Bhimasena by you, and all the Pandavas, along with their mother, were set ablaze in the house of lac, O wicked-minded one."
sabhāyāṃ yājñasenī ca kṛṣṭā dyūte rajasvalā। tadaiva tāvadduṣṭātmanvadhyastvaṃ nirapatrapaḥ ॥9-60-43॥
In the assembly, Yajnaseni was dragged during the game of dice while she was menstruating. At that moment, you, being shameless and wicked, deserved to be punished.
anakṣajñaṃ ca dharmajñaṃ saubalenākṣavedinā। nikṛtyā yatparājaiṣīstasādasi hato raṇe ॥9-60-44॥
Being ignorant of dice and yet a knower of dharma, you were deceitfully defeated by Saubala, the expert in dice; hence, you have been slain in battle.
jayadrathena pāpena yatkṛṣṇā kleśitā vane। yāteṣu mṛgayāṃ teṣu tṛṇabindorathāśrame ॥9-60-45॥
When Kṛṣṇā was tormented in the forest by the wicked Jayadratha, they went for hunting and then reached the hermitage of Tṛṇabindu.
abhimanyuśca yad bāla eko bahubhir āhave। tvaddoṣair nihataḥ pāpa tasmād asi hato raṇe ॥9-60-46॥
Abhimanyu, though young and alone, was slain by many in battle due to your misdeeds, O sinner; hence, you too are slain in battle.
duryodhana uvāca॥
Duryodhana said.
adhītaṃ vidhivaddattaṃ bhūḥ praśāstā sasāgarā। mūrdhni sthitamamitrāṇāṃ ko nu svantataro mayā ॥9-60-47॥
I have studied properly and given the earth with its oceans to be ruled. Who indeed is more dear to me than those placed on the heads of my enemies?
yadiṣṭaṃ kṣatrabandhūnāṃ svadharmamanupaśyatām। tadidaṃ nidhanaṃ prāptaṃ ko nu svantataro mayā ॥9-60-48॥
The kshatriya relatives, who were observing their own duty, have attained the desired death. Who indeed is dearer to me?
devārhā mānuṣā bhogāḥ prāptā asulabhā nṛpaiḥ। aiśvaryaṃ cottamaṃ prāptaṃ ko nu svantataro mayā ॥9-60-49॥
The enjoyments that are worthy of both gods and humans, which are difficult to obtain, have been secured by kings. The highest prosperity has been achieved. Who indeed is more content than I?
sasuhṛtsānubandhaśca svargaṃ gantāhamacyuta। yūyaṃ vihatasaṅkalpāḥ śocanto vartayiṣyatha ॥9-60-50॥
With my friends and relatives, I shall ascend to heaven, O infallible one, while you will remain here with your plans thwarted, lamenting.
sañjaya uvāca॥
Sanjaya said.
asya vākyasya nidhane kururājasya bhārata। apatat sumahad varṣaṃ puṣpāṇāṃ puṇyagandhinām ॥9-60-51॥
At the conclusion of this statement, O Bharata, a magnificent shower of fragrant flowers descended for the Kuru king.
avādayanta gandharvā jaguścāpsarasāṃ gaṇāḥ। siddhāśca mumucurvācaḥ sādhu sādhviti bhārata ॥9-60-52॥
The celestial musicians, the Gandharvas, played their instruments while the Apsaras sang. The Siddhas praised with words of approval, "Well done, well done," O Bharata.
vavau ca surabhirvāyuḥ puṇyagandho mṛduḥ sukhaḥ। vyarājatāmalaṃ caiva nabho vaiḍūryasaṃnibham ॥9-60-53॥
The gentle and pleasant wind carried a divine fragrance, and the sky shone brilliantly like a cat's eye gem.
atyadbhutāni te dṛṣṭvā vāsudevapurogamāḥ। duryodhanasya pūjāṃ ca dṛṣṭvā vrīḍāmupāgaman ॥9-60-54॥
Upon witnessing the extraordinary events and the honor given to Duryodhana by those led by Vasudeva, they felt ashamed.
hatāṁścādharmataḥ śrutvā śokārtāḥ śuśucurhi te। bhīṣmaṁ droṇaṁ tathā karṇaṁ bhūriśravasameva ca ॥9-60-55॥
Upon hearing of the unjust deaths, they were overwhelmed with sorrow and mourned for Bhishma, Drona, Karna, and Bhurishravas.
tāṁstu cintāparāndṛṣṭvā pāṇḍavāndīnacētasaḥ। prōvācēdaṁ vacaḥ kr̥ṣṇō mēghadundubhinisvanaḥ ॥9-60-56॥
Krishna, observing the Pandavas deeply engrossed in thought and with saddened hearts, spoke to them in a voice resonant like thunder, offering words of guidance.
naiṣa śakyo'tiśīghrāstraste ca sarve mahārathāḥ। ṛjuyuddhena vikrāntā hantuṃ yuṣmābhirāhave ॥9-60-57॥
It is not possible for you to kill these very swift weapons and all the great warriors in direct combat during the battle.
upāyā vihitā hyete mayā tasmānnarādhipāḥ। anyathā pāṇḍaveyānāṃ nābhaviṣyajjayaḥ kvacit ॥9-60-58॥
"I have indeed arranged these means, O kings; otherwise, the Pandavas would not have achieved victory anywhere."
te hi sarve mahātmānaścatvāro'tirathā bhuvi। na śakyā dharmato hantuṃ lokapālairapi svayam ॥9-60-59॥
These four great charioteers are indeed great souls on earth. Even the protectors of the world themselves cannot righteously kill them.
tathaivāyaṃ gadāpāṇirdhārtarāṣṭro gataklamaḥ। na śakyo dharmato hantuṃ kālenāpīha daṇḍinā ॥9-60-60॥
In the same way, this mace-wielder, the son of Dhritarashtra, who is free from fatigue, cannot be killed by righteousness, even with the passage of time or by punishment here.
na ca vo hṛdi kartavyaṃ yadayaṃ ghātito nṛpaḥ। mithyāvadhyāstathopāyairbahavaḥ śatravo'dhikāḥ ॥9-60-61॥
Do not hold in your heart that this king was killed. Many enemies, who are falsely considered invincible, are more through various means.
pūrvairanugato mārgo devairasuraghātibhiḥ। sadbhiścānugataḥ panthāḥ sa sarvairanugamyate ॥9-60-62॥
The path that was once followed by the ancients, the gods, the demon-slayers, and the virtuous is now followed by everyone.
kṛtakṛtyāḥ sma sāyāhne nivāsaṃ rocayāmahe। sāśvanāgarathāḥ sarve viśramāmo narādhipāḥ ॥9-60-63॥
Having fulfilled our duties, we arrange for our stay in the evening. All the kings, along with their horses, elephants, and chariots, take rest.
vāsudevavacaḥ śrutvā tadānīṃ pāṇḍavaiḥ saha। pāñcālā bhṛśasaṃhṛṣṭā vineduḥ siṃhasaṅghavat ॥9-60-64॥
Upon hearing the words of Vasudeva, the Panchalas, along with the Pandavas, were extremely delighted and roared together like a pride of lions.
tataḥ prādhmāpayañśaṅkhānpāñcajanyaṃ ca mādhavaḥ। hṛṣṭā duryodhanaṃ dṛṣṭvā nihataṃ puruṣarṣabhāḥ ॥9-60-65॥
Then Madhava, joyful at the sight of Duryodhana's defeat, blew the conches, including his own Panchajanya, as the warriors celebrated their victory.
