hatāḥ putrāś ca pautrāś ca bhrātaraḥ pitaras tathā। śvaśurā guravaś caiva mātulāḥ sapitāmahāḥ ॥12-33-1॥
[हताः (hatāḥ) - killed; destroyed; पुत्राः (putrāḥ) - sons; च (ca) - and; पौत्राः (pautrāḥ) - grandsons; च (ca) - and; भ्रातरः (bhrātaraḥ) - brothers; पितरः (pitarah) - fathers; तथा (tathā) - also; likewise; श्वशुराः (śvaśurāḥ) - fathers-in-law; गुरवः (guravaḥ) - teachers; elders; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; even; मातुलाः (mātulāḥ) - maternal uncles; सपितामहाः (sapitāmahāḥ) - with grandfathers; along with grandfathers;]
(Killed sons and grandsons and brothers, fathers also; fathers-in-law, teachers and indeed maternal uncles with grandfathers.)
Sons, grandsons, brothers, fathers, fathers-in-law, teachers, maternal uncles, and grandfathers have all been killed.
क्षत्रियाश्च महात्मानः सम्बन्धिसुहृदस्तथा। वयस्या ज्ञातयश्चैव भ्रातरश्च पितामह ॥१२-३३-२॥
kṣatriyāś ca mahātmānaḥ sambandhi-suhṛdas tathā। vayasyā jñātayaś caiva bhrātaraś ca pitāmaha ॥12-33-2॥
[क्षत्रियाः (kṣatriyāḥ) - warriors; च (ca) - and; महात्मानः (mahātmānaḥ) - great-souled ones; सम्बन्धि (sambandhi) - relatives; सुहृदः (suhṛdaḥ) - friends; तथा (tathā) - also; वयस्याः (vayasyāḥ) - companions; ज्ञातयः (jñātayaḥ) - kinsmen; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; भ्रातरः (bhrātaraḥ) - brothers; च (ca) - and; पितामह (pitāmaha) - grandfather;]
(Warriors and great-souled ones, relatives, friends also, companions, kinsmen indeed, brothers and grandfather.)
The warriors, noble souls, relatives, friends, companions, kinsmen, brothers, and the grandfather (all were present).
बहवश्च मनुष्येन्द्रा नानादेशसमागताः। घातिता राज्यलुब्धेन मयैकेन पितामह ॥१२-३३-३॥
bahavaś ca manuṣyendrā nānādeśasamāgatāḥ। ghātitā rājyalubdhena mayaikena pitāmaha ॥12-33-3॥

(Many and kings of men from various regions assembled, killed by one greedy for kingdom, by me alone, O grandsire.)
O grandsire, many kings of men from various regions who had assembled were killed by me alone, greedy for the kingdom.
तांस्तादृशानहं हत्वा धर्मनित्यान्महीक्षितः। असकृत्सोमपान्वीरान्किं प्राप्स्यामि तपोधन ॥१२-३३-४॥
tāṃstādṛśānahaṃ hatvā dharmanityānmahīkṣitaḥ। asakṛtsomapānvīrānkiṃ prāpsyāmi tapodhana ॥12-33-4॥

(Those such as those I having slain, always righteous kings, many times Soma-drinking heroes, what shall I attain, O wealth of austerity?)
O sage, what will I gain by slaying such always righteous kings and heroes who have drunk Soma many times?
दह्याम्यनिशमद्याहं चिन्तयानः पुनः पुनः। हीनां पार्थिवसिंहैस्तैः श्रीमद्भिः पृथिवीमिमाम् ॥१२-३३-५॥
dahyāmyaniśamadyāhaṃ cintayānaḥ punaḥ punaḥ। hīnāṃ pārthivasiṃhaistaiḥ śrīmadbhiḥ pṛthivīmimām ॥12-33-5॥
[दह्यामि (dahyāmi) - I am burning; (from the root 'dah', to burn) अनिशम् (aniśam) - constantly; (without night, i.e., always; 'a-' not, 'niśam' night) अद्य (adya) - today; अहम् (aham) - I; चिन्तयानः (cintayānaḥ) - thinking; (present participle of 'cint', to think) पुनः (punaḥ) - again; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; हीनाम् (hīnāṃ) - bereft of; (deprived, lacking) पार्थिवसिंहैः (pārthivasiṃhaiḥ) - by the lion-like kings; ('pārthiva' king, 'siṃha' lion) तैः (taiḥ) - by those; श्रीमद्भिः (śrīmadbhiḥ) - by the glorious; ('śrīmat' glorious, illustrious) पृथिवीम् (pṛthivīm) - the earth; इमाम् (imām) - this;]
(I am burning constantly today, thinking again and again of this earth, bereft of those glorious, lion-like kings.)
Today, I am constantly tormented, thinking again and again of this earth deprived of those illustrious, lion-like kings.
दृष्ट्वा ज्ञातिवधं घोरं हतांश्च शतशः परान्। कोटिशश्च नरानन्यान्परितप्ये पितामह ॥१२-३३-६॥
dṛṣṭvā jñātivadhaṃ ghoraṃ hatāṃś ca śataśaḥ parān। koṭiśaś ca narān anyān paritapye pitāmaha ॥12-33-6॥

(Having seen the terrible slaughter of kinsmen, and the enemies slain by the hundreds, and other men by the crores, I am tormented, O grandsire.)
O grandsire, seeing the terrible slaughter of kinsmen, the enemies slain by the hundreds, and countless other men, I am filled with anguish.
का नु तासां वरस्त्रीणामवस्थाद्य भविष्यति। विहीनानां स्वतनयैः पतिभिर्भ्रातृभिस्तथा ॥१२-३३-७॥
kā nu tāsāṃ varastrīṇām avasthā adya bhaviṣyati। vihīnānāṃ svatanayaiḥ patibhir bhrātṛbhiḥ tathā ॥12-33-7॥

(Who indeed, of those noble women, what condition today will be? Of those deprived by their own sons, by husbands, by brothers also.)
What will be the condition today of those noble women who have been deprived by their own sons, husbands, and brothers?
अस्मानन्तकरान्घोरान्पाण्डवान्वृष्णिसंहितान्। आक्रोशन्त्यः कृशा दीना निपतन्त्यश्च भूतले ॥१२-३३-८॥
asmānantakarānghorānpāṇḍavānvṛṣṇisaṃhitān। ākrośantyaḥ kṛśā dīnā nipatantyaśca bhūtale ॥12-33-8॥

(Us, makers of endless (deeds), terrible, the Pāṇḍavas joined with the Vṛṣṇis, crying out, emaciated, distressed, and falling down on the earth.)
The emaciated and distressed women, crying out, fall to the earth because of us, the terrible Pāṇḍavas joined with the Vṛṣṇis, makers of endless (deeds).
अपश्यन्त्यः पितॄन्भ्रातॄन्पतीन्पुत्रांश्च योषितः। त्यक्त्वा प्राणान्प्रियान्सर्वा गमिष्यन्ति यमक्षयम् ॥१२-३३-९॥
apaśyantyaḥ pitṝn bhrātṝn patīn putrāṃś ca yoṣitaḥ। tyaktvā prāṇān priyān sarvā gamiṣyanti yamakṣayam ॥12-33-9॥
[अपश्यन्त्यः (apaśyantyaḥ) - not seeing; पितॄन् (pitṝn) - fathers; भ्रातॄन् (bhrātṝn) - brothers; पतीन् (patīn) - husbands; पुत्रान् (putrān) - sons; च (ca) - and; योषितः (yoṣitaḥ) - women; त्यक्त्वा (tyaktvā) - having abandoned; प्राणान् (prāṇān) - lives; प्रियान् (priyān) - dear ones; सर्वाः (sarvāḥ) - all; गमिष्यन्ति (gamiṣyanti) - will go; यमक्षयम् (yamakṣayam) - to the abode of Yama;]
(Not seeing fathers, brothers, husbands, sons, and women, having abandoned lives and all dear ones, all will go to the abode of Yama.)
Not seeing their fathers, brothers, husbands, sons, and all their dear ones, these women, having abandoned their lives, will all go to the abode of Yama.
वत्सलत्वाद्द्विजश्रेष्ठ तत्र मे नास्ति संशयः। व्यक्तं सौक्ष्म्याच्च धर्मस्य प्राप्स्यामः स्त्रीवधं वयम् ॥१२-३३-१०॥
vatsalatvāddvijaśreṣṭha tatra me nāsti saṃśayaḥ। vyaktaṃ saukṣmyācca dharmasya prāpsyāmaḥ strīvadhaṃ vayam ॥12-33-10॥
[वत्सलत्वात् (vatsalatvāt) - from affection; द्विजश्रेष्ठ (dvijaśreṣṭha) - O best of the twice-born; तत्र (tatra) - there; मे (me) - my; नास्ति (nāsti) - there is not; संशयः (saṃśayaḥ) - doubt; व्यक्तम् (vyaktam) - clearly; सौक्ष्म्यात् (saukṣmyāt) - from subtlety; च (ca) - and; धर्मस्य (dharmasya) - of dharma; प्राप्स्यामः (prāpsyāmaḥ) - we shall obtain; स्त्रीवधम् (strīvadham) - the killing of a woman; वयम् (vayam) - we;]
(O best of the twice-born, from affection, there is no doubt for me there. Clearly, from the subtlety of dharma, we shall obtain the killing of a woman.)
O best of the twice-born, due to affection, I have no doubt about this. It is clear that, because of the subtlety of dharma, we will incur the sin of killing a woman.
ते वयं सुहृदो हत्वा कृत्वा पापमनन्तकम्। नरके निपतिष्यामो ह्यधःशिरस एव च ॥१२-३३-११॥
te vayaṃ suhṛdo hatvā kṛtvā pāpamanantakam। narake nipatiṣyāmo hyadhaḥśirasa eva ca ॥12-33-11॥
[ते (te) - they; (those) वयम् (vayam) - we; सुहृदः (suhṛdaḥ) - friends; हत्वा (hatvā) - having killed; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having done; पापम् (pāpam) - sin; अनन्तकम् (anantakam) - endless; नरके (narake) - in hell; निपतिष्यामः (nipatiṣyāmaḥ) - we shall fall; हि (hi) - indeed; अधःशिरसः (adhaḥśirasaḥ) - head downwards; एव (eva) - only; च (ca) - and;]
(They, we, friends, having killed, having done, sin, endless, in hell, we shall fall, indeed, head downwards, only, and.)
If we, having killed our friends, commit endless sin, we shall indeed fall into hell, head downwards and all.
शरीराणि विमोक्ष्यामस्तपसोग्रेण सत्तम। आश्रमांश्च विशेषांस्त्वं ममाचक्ष्व पितामह ॥१२-३३-१२॥
śarīrāṇi vimokṣyāmas tapasogreṇa sattama। āśramāṃś ca viśeṣāṃs tvaṃ mamācakṣva pitāmaha ॥12-33-12॥
[शरीराणि (śarīrāṇi) - bodies; विमोक्ष्यामः (vimokṣyāmaḥ) - we shall abandon; तपसा (tapasā) - by austerity; उग्रेण (ugreṇa) - severe; सत्तम (sattama) - O best one; आश्रमान् (āśramān) - hermitages; च (ca) - and; विशेषान् (viśeṣān) - special; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; मम (mama) - to me; आचक्ष्व (ācakṣva) - tell; पितामह (pitāmaha) - O grandsire;]
(Bodies we shall abandon by severe austerity, O best one; and the special hermitages, you tell me, O grandsire.)
O best one, we shall abandon our bodies through severe austerity; now, O grandsire, please tell me about the special hermitages.
