Core and Pancharatra: Yudhishthira, not satisfied, asks about the special Aashramas.
yudhiṣṭhira uvāca॥
Yudhiṣṭhira said:
hatāḥ putrāś ca pautrāś ca bhrātaraḥ pitaras tathā। śvaśurā guravaś caiva mātulāḥ sapitāmahāḥ ॥12-33-1॥
Sons, grandsons, brothers, fathers, fathers-in-law, teachers, maternal uncles, and grandfathers have all been killed.
kṣatriyāś ca mahātmānaḥ sambandhi-suhṛdas tathā। vayasyā jñātayaś caiva bhrātaraś ca pitāmaha ॥12-33-2॥
The warriors, noble souls, relatives, friends, companions, kinsmen, brothers, and the grandfather (all were present).
bahavaś ca manuṣyendrā nānādeśasamāgatāḥ। ghātitā rājyalubdhena mayaikena pitāmaha ॥12-33-3॥
O grandsire, many kings of men from various regions who had assembled were killed by me alone, greedy for the kingdom.
tāṃstādṛśānahaṃ hatvā dharmanityānmahīkṣitaḥ। asakṛtsomapānvīrānkiṃ prāpsyāmi tapodhana ॥12-33-4॥
O sage, what will I gain by slaying such always righteous kings and heroes who have drunk Soma many times?
dahyāmyaniśamadyāhaṃ cintayānaḥ punaḥ punaḥ। hīnāṃ pārthivasiṃhaistaiḥ śrīmadbhiḥ pṛthivīmimām ॥12-33-5॥
Today, I am constantly tormented, thinking again and again of this earth deprived of those illustrious, lion-like kings.
dṛṣṭvā jñātivadhaṃ ghoraṃ hatāṃś ca śataśaḥ parān। koṭiśaś ca narān anyān paritapye pitāmaha ॥12-33-6॥
O grandsire, seeing the terrible slaughter of kinsmen, the enemies slain by the hundreds, and countless other men, I am filled with anguish.
kā nu tāsāṃ varastrīṇām avasthā adya bhaviṣyati। vihīnānāṃ svatanayaiḥ patibhir bhrātṛbhiḥ tathā ॥12-33-7॥
What will be the condition today of those noble women who have been deprived by their own sons, husbands, and brothers?
asmānantakarānghorānpāṇḍavānvṛṣṇisaṃhitān। ākrośantyaḥ kṛśā dīnā nipatantyaśca bhūtale ॥12-33-8॥
The emaciated and distressed women, crying out, fall to the earth because of us, the terrible Pāṇḍavas joined with the Vṛṣṇis, makers of endless (deeds).
apaśyantyaḥ pitṝn bhrātṝn patīn putrāṃś ca yoṣitaḥ। tyaktvā prāṇān priyān sarvā gamiṣyanti yamakṣayam ॥12-33-9॥
Not seeing their fathers, brothers, husbands, sons, and all their dear ones, these women, having abandoned their lives, will all go to the abode of Yama.
vatsalatvāddvijaśreṣṭha tatra me nāsti saṃśayaḥ। vyaktaṃ saukṣmyācca dharmasya prāpsyāmaḥ strīvadhaṃ vayam ॥12-33-10॥
O best of the twice-born, due to affection, I have no doubt about this. It is clear that, because of the subtlety of dharma, we will incur the sin of killing a woman.
te vayaṃ suhṛdo hatvā kṛtvā pāpamanantakam। narake nipatiṣyāmo hyadhaḥśirasa eva ca ॥12-33-11॥
If we, having killed our friends, commit endless sin, we shall indeed fall into hell, head downwards and all.
śarīrāṇi vimokṣyāmas tapasogreṇa sattama। āśramāṃś ca viśeṣāṃs tvaṃ mamācakṣva pitāmaha ॥12-33-12॥
O best one, we shall abandon our bodies through severe austerity; now, O grandsire, please tell me about the special hermitages.
