Core and Pancharatra-Ext: Yudhishthira declares Dhritarashtra to be respected at all times and then allocates portfolios to govern the kingdom.
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

Vaiśampāyana said:
प्रकृतीनां तु तद्वाक्यं देशकालोपसंहितम्। श्रुत्वा युधिष्ठिरो राजाथोत्तरं प्रत्यभाषत ॥१२-४१-१॥
prakṛtīnāṃ tu tadvākyaṃ deśakālopasaṃhitam। śrutvā yudhiṣṭhiro rājāthottaraṃ pratyabhāṣata ॥12-41-1॥
[प्रकृतीनां (prakṛtīnām) - of the ministers; तु (tu) - but; तत् (tat) - that; वाक्यं (vākyaṃ) - speech; देश (deśa) - place; काल (kāla) - time; उपसंहितम् (upasaṃhitam) - accompanied by; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhishthira; राजा (rājā) - the king; अथ (atha) - then; उत्तरं (uttaram) - reply; प्रत्यभाषत (pratyabhāṣata) - replied;]
(But having heard that speech of the ministers, accompanied by considerations of place and time, King Yudhishthira then replied with an answer.)
But when King Yudhishthira heard the ministers' speech, which was appropriate to the place and time, he then gave his reply.
धन्याः पाण्डुसुता लोके येषां ब्राह्मणपुङ्गवाः। तथ्यान्वाप्यथ वातथ्यान्गुणानाहुः समागताः ॥१२-४१-२॥
dhanyāḥ pāṇḍusutā loke yeṣāṃ brāhmaṇapuṅgavāḥ। tathyānvāpyatha vātathyānguṇānāhuḥ samāgatāḥ ॥12-41-2॥
[धन्याः (dhanyāḥ) - fortunate; blessed; पाण्डुसुताः (pāṇḍusutāḥ) - sons of Pāṇḍu; लोके (loke) - in the world; येषाम् (yeṣām) - of whom; ब्राह्मणपुङ्गवाः (brāhmaṇapuṅgavāḥ) - eminent Brāhmaṇas; leading Brāhmaṇas; तथ्यान् (tathyān) - truthful ones; वा (vā) - or; अपि (api) - also; even; अथ (atha) - then; moreover; वा (vā) - or; अतथ्यान् (atathyān) - untruthful ones; गुणान् (guṇān) - qualities; virtues; आहुः (āhuḥ) - they say; declare; समागताः (samāgatāḥ) - assembled; gathered;]
(Fortunate are the sons of Pāṇḍu in the world, of whom the eminent Brāhmaṇas, whether truthful or even untruthful, declare virtues having assembled.)
In this world, blessed are the sons of Pāṇḍu, for among them, even the foremost Brāhmaṇas, whether truthful or not, have gathered and proclaimed their virtues.
अनुग्राह्या वयं नूनं भवतामिति मे मतिः। यत्रैवं गुणसम्पन्नानस्मान्ब्रूथ विमत्सराः ॥१२-४१-३॥
anugrāhyā vayaṃ nūnaṃ bhavatāmiti me matiḥ। yatraivaṃ guṇasampannān asmān brūtha vimatsarāḥ ॥12-41-3॥
[अनुग्राह्या (anugrāhyā) - to be favored; वयम् (vayam) - we; नूनम् (nūnam) - indeed; भवताम् (bhavatām) - by you; इति (iti) - thus; मे (me) - my; मतिः (matiḥ) - thought; यत्र (yatra) - where; एवम् (evam) - thus; गुणसम्पन्नान् (guṇasampannān) - endowed with virtues; अस्मान् (asmān) - us; ब्रूथ (brūtha) - you speak; विमत्सराः (vimatsarāḥ) - free from envy;]
(To be favored are we indeed by you—thus is my thought. Where thus, endowed with virtues, us you speak, free from envy.)
My thought is that we are indeed to be favored by you. For, when you, free from envy, speak to us who are endowed with such virtues, it is so.
धृतराष्ट्रो महाराजः पिता नो दैवतं परम्। साशनेऽस्य प्रिये चैव स्थेयं मत्प्रियकाङ्क्षिभिः ॥१२-४१-४॥
dhṛtarāṣṭro mahārājaḥ pitā no daivataṃ param। sāśane'sya priye caiva stheyaṃ matpriyakāṅkṣibhiḥ ॥12-41-4॥
[धृतराष्ट्रः (dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ) - Dhritarashtra; (name of a king); महाराजः (mahārājaḥ) - great king; पिता (pitā) - father; नः (naḥ) - our; दैवतं (daivataṃ) - divinity; deity; परम् (param) - supreme; highest; साशने (sāśane) - in the rule; in the governance; अस्य (asya) - his; प्रिये (priye) - dear; beloved; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; surely; स्थेयं (stheyaṃ) - should remain; should stay; मत्प्रियकाङ्क्षिभिः (matpriyakāṅkṣibhiḥ) - by those desiring my favor;]
(Dhritarashtra, the great king, our father, is the supreme deity. In his rule, and indeed in what is dear to him, one should remain by those desiring my favor.)
Dhritarashtra, the great king and our father, is regarded as the supreme deity. Those who desire my favor should remain loyal both to his rule and to what he holds dear.
एतदर्थं हि जीवामि कृत्वा ज्ञातिवधं महत्। अस्य शुश्रूषणं कार्यं मया नित्यमतन्द्रिणा ॥१२-४१-५॥
etad-arthaṃ hi jīvāmi kṛtvā jñāti-vadhaṃ mahat | asya śuśrūṣaṇaṃ kāryaṃ mayā nityam-atandriṇā ॥12-41-5॥
[एतदर्थं (etad-artham) - for this purpose; हि (hi) - indeed; जीवामि (jīvāmi) - I live; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having done; ज्ञातिवधं (jñāti-vadham) - the killing of relatives; महत् (mahat) - great; अस्य (asya) - his; शुश्रूषणं (śuśrūṣaṇam) - service; कार्यं (kāryam) - to be done; मया (mayā) - by me; नित्यम् (nityam) - always; अतन्द्रिणा (atandriṇā) - without fatigue;]
(For this purpose indeed I live, having done the great killing of relatives; his service is to be done by me always, without fatigue.)
Indeed, I live for this very purpose; having committed the great act of killing my relatives, it is my constant duty to serve him tirelessly.
यदि चाहमनुग्राह्यो भवतां सुहृदां ततः। धृतराष्ट्रे यथापूर्वं वृत्तिं वर्तितुमर्हथ ॥१२-४१-६॥
yadi cāham-anugrāhyo bhavatāṃ suhṛdāṃ tataḥ। dhṛtarāṣṭre yathā-pūrvaṃ vṛttiṃ vartitum-arhatha ॥12-41-6॥
[यदि (yadi) - if; च (ca) - and; अहम् (aham) - I; अनुग्राह्यः (anugrāhyaḥ) - worthy of favor; भवताम् (bhavatām) - of you (plural); सुहृदाम् (suhṛdām) - of friends; ततः (tataḥ) - then; धृतराष्ट्रे (dhṛtarāṣṭre) - towards Dhritarashtra; यथा (yathā) - as; पूर्वम् (pūrvam) - before; वृत्तिम् (vṛttim) - conduct; वर्तितुम् (vartitum) - to behave; अर्हथ (arhatha) - you ought;]
(If I am indeed worthy of favor from you, O friends, then you ought to behave towards Dhritarashtra as before in conduct.)
If you consider me worthy of your favor, O friends, then you should continue to behave towards Dhritarashtra as you did before.
एष नाथो हि जगतो भवतां च मया सह। अस्यैव पृथिवी कृत्स्ना पाण्डवाः सर्व एव च ॥ एतन्मनसि कर्तव्यं भवद्भिर्वचनं मम ॥१२-४१-७॥
eṣa nātho hi jagato bhavatāṃ ca mayā saha। asyaiva pṛthivī kṛtsnā pāṇḍavāḥ sarva eva ca ॥ etan manasi kartavyaṃ bhavadbhiḥ vacanaṃ mama ॥12-41-7॥
[एष (eṣa) - this; नाथः (nāthaḥ) - lord; हि (hi) - indeed; जगतः (jagataḥ) - of the world; भवताम् (bhavatām) - of you; च (ca) - and; मया (mayā) - by me; सह (saha) - with; अस्यैव (asyaiva) - of this alone; पृथिवी (pṛthivī) - earth; कृत्स्ना (kṛtsnā) - entire; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pāṇḍavas; सर्वे (sarve) - all; एव (eva) - indeed; च (ca) - and; एतत् (etat) - this; मनसि (manasi) - in (your) mind; कर्तव्यम् (kartavyam) - to be done; भवद्भिः (bhavadbhiḥ) - by you; वचनम् (vacanam) - word; मम (mama) - my;]
(This lord indeed of the world, of you and with me. Of this alone, the entire earth, the Pāṇḍavas, all indeed and. This in (your) mind is to be done by you, my word.)
This is the lord of the world, of you and with me. The entire earth belongs to him alone, as do all the Pāṇḍavas. You must keep my word in mind and act accordingly.
अनुगम्य च राजानं यथेष्टं गम्यतामिति। पौरजानपदान्सर्वान्विसृज्य कुरुनन्दनः ॥ यौवराज्येन कौरव्यो भीमसेनमयोजयत् ॥१२-४१-८॥
anugamya ca rājānaṃ yatheṣṭaṃ gamyatāmiti। paurajānapadānsarvānvisṛjya kurunandanaḥ ॥ yauvarājyena kauravyo bhīmasenamayojayat ॥12-41-8॥
[अनुगम्य (anugamya) - having approached; च (ca) - and; राजानम् (rājānam) - the king; यथेष्टम् (yatheṣṭam) - as desired; गम्यताम् (gamyatām) - let (him) go; इति (iti) - thus; पौरजानपदान् (paurajānapadān) - citizens and countrymen; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; विसृज्य (visṛjya) - having dismissed; कुरुनन्दनः (kurunandanaḥ) - O joy of the Kurus; यौवराज्येन (yauvarājyena) - with the office of crown prince; कौरव्यः (kauravyaḥ) - the Kaurava; भीमसेनम् (bhīmasenam) - Bhimasena; अयोजयत् (ayojayat) - appointed;]
(Having approached the king and (said) 'let (him) go as desired,' having dismissed all the citizens and countrymen, O joy of the Kurus, the Kaurava appointed Bhimasena with the office of crown prince.)
After approaching the king and saying, 'Let him go as he wishes,' and dismissing all the citizens and countrymen, O joy of the Kurus, the Kaurava appointed Bhimasena as the crown prince.
मन्त्रे च निश्चये चैव षाड्गुण्यस्य च चिन्तने। विदुरं बुद्धिसम्पन्नं प्रीतिमान्वै समादिशत् ॥१२-४१-९॥
mantre ca niścaye caiva ṣāḍguṇyasya ca cintane। viduraṃ buddhisampannaṃ prītimānvai samādiśat ॥12-41-9॥
[मन्त्रे (mantre) - in counsel; च (ca) - and; निश्चये (niścaye) - in decision; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; षाड्गुण्यस्य (ṣāḍguṇyasya) - of the six policies; च (ca) - and; चिन्तने (cintane) - in deliberation; विदुरं (viduram) - Vidura; बुद्धिसम्पन्नं (buddhisampannam) - endowed with wisdom; प्रीतिमान् (prītimān) - affectionate; वै (vai) - indeed; समादिशत् (samādiśat) - he appointed;]
(In counsel and in decision, and indeed in deliberation on the six policies, Vidura, endowed with wisdom and affectionate, indeed he appointed.)
In matters of counsel, decision, and deliberation regarding the six policies, he appointed Vidura, who was wise and affectionate.
कृताकृतपरिज्ञाने तथायव्ययचिन्तने। सञ्जयं योजयामास ऋद्धमृद्धैर्गुणैर्युतम् ॥१२-४१-१०॥
kṛtākṛtaparijñāne tathāyavyayacintane। sañjayaṃ yojayāmāsa ṛddhamṛddhairguṇairyutam ॥12-41-10॥
[कृत (kṛta) - done; अकृत (akṛta) - not done; परिज्ञाने (parijñāne) - in the complete knowledge; तथा (tathā) - thus; अव्यय (avyaya) - imperishable; चिन्तने (cintane) - in contemplation; सञ्जयम् (sañjayam) - Sañjaya; योजयामास (yojayāmāsa) - engaged; ऋद्धम् (ṛddham) - prosperous; ऋद्धैः (ṛddhaiḥ) - with the prosperous; गुणैः (guṇaiḥ) - with qualities; युतम् (yutam) - endowed;]
(In the complete knowledge of what is done and not done, and thus in the contemplation of the imperishable, Sañjaya, endowed with qualities, was engaged, prosperous and with the prosperous.)
Sañjaya, who possessed complete knowledge of action and inaction and contemplated the imperishable, was engaged, endowed with virtues, and prosperous among the prosperous.
बलस्य परिमाणे च भक्तवेतनयोस्तथा। नकुलं व्यादिशद्राजा कर्मिणामन्ववेक्षणे ॥१२-४१-११॥
balasya parimāṇe ca bhaktavetanayostathā। nakulaṃ vyādiśadrājā karmaṇām anvavekṣaṇe ॥12-41-11॥
[बलस्य (balasya) - of the force; of strength; परिमाणे (parimāṇe) - in the measurement; in the assessment; च (ca) - and; भक्तवेतनयोः (bhaktavetanayoḥ) - of food and wages; of rations and pay; तथा (tathā) - likewise; in the same way; नकुलं (nakulaṃ) - Nakula (proper noun); व्यादिशत् (vyādiśat) - appointed; assigned; राजा (rājā) - the king; कर्मिणाम् (karmaṇām) - of the workers; of those engaged in work; अन्ववेक्षणे (anvavekṣaṇe) - in the supervision; in the inspection;]
(In the measurement of the force and likewise of food and wages, the king appointed Nakula for the supervision of the workers.)
The king appointed Nakula to supervise the measurement of the army and also the distribution of food and wages to the workers.
परचक्रोपरोधे च दृप्तानां चावमर्दने। युधिष्ठिरो महाराजः फल्गुनं व्यादिदेश ह ॥१२-४१-१२॥
paracakroparodhe ca dṛptānāṃ cāvamardane। yudhiṣṭhiro mahārājaḥ phalgunaṃ vyādideśa ha ॥12-41-12॥
[परचक्र (paracakra) - enemy army; उपरोधे (uparodhe) - in obstruction; च (ca) - and; दृप्तानाम् (dṛptānām) - of the arrogant; च (ca) - and; अवमर्दने (avamardane) - in crushing; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhishthira; महाराजः (mahārājaḥ) - the great king; फल्गुनम् (phalgunaṃ) - Phalguna (Arjuna); व्यादिदेश (vyādideśa) - ordered; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(In the obstruction of the enemy army and in the crushing of the arrogant, Yudhishthira the great king indeed ordered Phalguna (Arjuna).)
When the enemy army obstructed and the arrogant needed to be subdued, King Yudhishthira commanded Arjuna (Phalguna).
द्विजानां वेदकार्येषु कार्येष्वन्येषु चैव हि। धौम्यं पुरोधसां श्रेष्ठं व्यादिदेश परन्तपः ॥१२-४१-१३॥
dvijānāṃ vedakāryeṣu kāryeṣvanyeṣu caiva hi। dhaumyaṃ purodhasāṃ śreṣṭhaṃ vyādideśa parantapaḥ ॥12-41-13॥
[द्विजानाम् (dvijānām) - of the twice-born; वेदकार्येषु (vedakāryeṣu) - in Vedic rituals; कार्येषु (kāryeṣu) - in other duties; अन्येषु (anyeṣu) - in others; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; हि (hi) - surely; धौम्यम् (dhaumyam) - Dhaumya; पुरोधसाम् (purodhasām) - of the priests; श्रेष्ठम् (śreṣṭham) - the best; व्यादिदेश (vyādideśa) - appointed; परन्तपः (parantapaḥ) - the scorcher of foes;]
(Of the twice-born, in Vedic rituals, in other duties and indeed in others, Dhaumya, the best of priests, was appointed by the scorcher of foes.)
For the twice-born, in Vedic rituals and other duties as well, Dhaumya, the foremost among priests, was appointed by the mighty conqueror.
सहदेवं समीपस्थं नित्यमेव समादिशत्। तेन गोप्यो हि नृपतिः सर्वावस्थो विशां पते ॥१२-४१-१४॥
sahadevaṃ samīpasthaṃ nityam eva samādiśat। tena gopyo hi nṛpatiḥ sarvāvastho viśāṃ pate ॥12-41-14॥
[सहदेवं (sahadevaṃ) - with Sahadeva; समीपस्थं (samīpastham) - standing nearby; नित्यम् (nityam) - always; एव (eva) - indeed; समादिशत् (samādiśat) - he instructed; तेन (tena) - by him; गोप्यः (gopyaḥ) - the cowherd women; हि (hi) - indeed; नृपतिः (nṛpatiḥ) - the king; सर्वावस्थः (sarvāvasthaḥ) - in all conditions; विशां (viśām) - of the people; पते (pate) - O lord;]
(With Sahadeva standing nearby, he always indeed instructed. By him, the cowherd women indeed, the king in all conditions, O lord of the people.)
With Sahadeva always nearby, he continually gave instructions. By him, the king, in every situation, protected the cowherd women, O lord of the people.
यान्यानमन्ययोग्यांश्च येषु येष्विह कर्मसु। तांस्तांस्तेष्वेव युयुजे प्रीयमाणो महीपतिः ॥१२-४१-१५॥
yāny ānam anyayogyāṃś ca yeṣu yeṣv iha karmasu। tāṃs tāṃs teṣv eva yuyuje prīyamāṇo mahīpatiḥ ॥12-41-15॥
[यानि (yāni) - which; (neuter plural) आनम् (ānam) - suitable; fit; (accusative plural) अन्ययोग्यान् (anyayogyān) - other suitable; (accusative plural) च (ca) - and; येषु (yeṣu) - in which; (locative plural) येषु (yeṣu) - in which; (locative plural) इह (iha) - here; in this (context); कर्मसु (karmasu) - in actions; (locative plural) तांस्तान् (tāṃs tān) - those; (accusative plural) तेषु (teṣu) - in those; (locative plural) एव (eva) - only; indeed; युयुजे (yuyuje) - engaged; joined; प्रीयमाणः (prīyamāṇaḥ) - being pleased; delighted; महीपतिः (mahīpatiḥ) - the king;]
(Which other suitable (things) and which (things) here in actions, those (things) in those only he engaged, being pleased, the king.)
The king, being pleased, engaged only those persons in those actions for which they were suitable.
विदुरं सञ्जयं चैव युयुत्सुं च महामतिम्। अब्रवीत्परवीरघ्नो धर्मात्मा धर्मवत्सलः ॥१२-४१-१६॥
viduraṃ sañjayaṃ caiva yuyutsuṃ ca mahāmatim। abravīt paravīraghno dharmātmā dharmavatsalaḥ ॥12-41-16॥
[विदुरम् (viduram) - Vidura; सञ्जयम् (sañjayam) - Sanjaya; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; युयुत्सुम् (yuyutsum) - Yuyutsu; च (ca) - and; महामतिम् (mahāmatim) - great-minded; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke; परवीरघ्नः (paravīraghnaḥ) - destroyer of enemy heroes; धर्मात्मा (dharmātmā) - righteous-souled; धर्मवत्सलः (dharmavatsalaḥ) - fond of dharma;]
(Vidura, Sanjaya indeed, Yuyutsu and the great-minded (ones), the destroyer of enemy heroes, the righteous-souled, fond of dharma, spoke.)
The destroyer of enemy heroes, righteous and devoted to dharma, spoke to Vidura, Sanjaya, and the wise Yuyutsu.
उत्थायोत्थाय यत्कार्यमस्य राज्ञः पितुर्मम। सर्वं भवद्भिः कर्तव्यमप्रमत्तैर्यथातथम् ॥१२-४१-१७॥
utthāyotthāya yat kāryam asya rājñaḥ pitur mama। sarvaṃ bhavadbhiḥ kartavyam apramattair yathā tatham ॥12-41-17॥
[उत्थाय (utthāya) - having arisen; उत्थाय (utthāya) - having arisen; यत् (yat) - which; कार्यं (kāryam) - duty; अस्य (asya) - of him; राज्ञः (rājñaḥ) - of the king; पितुः (pituḥ) - of the father; मम (mama) - my; सर्वं (sarvam) - all; भवद्भिः (bhavadbhiḥ) - by you all; कर्तव्यम् (kartavyam) - should be done; अप्रमत्तैः (apramattaiḥ) - by those who are vigilant; यथा (yathā) - as; तथम् (tatham) - thus;]
(Having arisen, having arisen, whatever duty of him, of the king, of my father, all by you all should be done by those who are vigilant, as thus.)
Rise up again and again; whatever duty belongs to him, to the king, my father, all of it must be performed by you all with vigilance, exactly as it should be.
पौरजानपदानां च यानि कार्याणि नित्यशः। राजानं समनुज्ञाप्य तानि कार्याणि धर्मतः ॥१२-४१-१८॥
paurajanapadānāṃ ca yāni kāryāṇi nityaśaḥ। rājānaṃ samanujñāpya tāni kāryāṇi dharmataḥ ॥12-41-18॥
[पौर (paura) - of townsmen; जानपदानाम् (jānapadānām) - of country people; च (ca) - and; यानि (yāni) - which; कार्याणि (kāryāṇi) - actions; नित्यशः (nityaśaḥ) - constantly; राजानम् (rājānam) - the king; समनुज्ञाप्य (samanujñāpya) - having obtained permission; तानि (tāni) - those; कार्याणि (kāryāṇi) - actions; धर्मतः (dharmataḥ) - according to dharma;]
(Of townsmen and of country people, which actions constantly (they do), having obtained the king's permission, those actions according to dharma.)
The regular duties of townsmen and country people, after obtaining the king's permission, should be performed in accordance with dharma.
