Core and Pancharatra-Ext: Yudhishthira declares Dhritarashtra to be respected at all times and then allocates portfolios to govern the kingdom.
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥
Vaiśampāyana said:
प्रकृतीनां तु तद्वाक्यं देशकालोपसंहितम्। श्रुत्वा युधिष्ठिरो राजाथोत्तरं प्रत्यभाषत ॥१२-४१-१॥
But when King Yudhishthira heard the ministers' speech, which was appropriate to the place and time, he then gave his reply.
धन्याः पाण्डुसुता लोके येषां ब्राह्मणपुङ्गवाः। तथ्यान्वाप्यथ वातथ्यान्गुणानाहुः समागताः ॥१२-४१-२॥
In this world, blessed are the sons of Pāṇḍu, for among them, even the foremost Brāhmaṇas, whether truthful or not, have gathered and proclaimed their virtues.
अनुग्राह्या वयं नूनं भवतामिति मे मतिः। यत्रैवं गुणसम्पन्नानस्मान्ब्रूथ विमत्सराः ॥१२-४१-३॥
My thought is that we are indeed to be favored by you. For, when you, free from envy, speak to us who are endowed with such virtues, it is so.
धृतराष्ट्रो महाराजः पिता नो दैवतं परम्। साशनेऽस्य प्रिये चैव स्थेयं मत्प्रियकाङ्क्षिभिः ॥१२-४१-४॥
Dhritarashtra, the great king and our father, is regarded as the supreme deity. Those who desire my favor should remain loyal both to his rule and to what he holds dear.
एतदर्थं हि जीवामि कृत्वा ज्ञातिवधं महत्। अस्य शुश्रूषणं कार्यं मया नित्यमतन्द्रिणा ॥१२-४१-५॥
Indeed, I live for this very purpose; having committed the great act of killing my relatives, it is my constant duty to serve him tirelessly.
यदि चाहमनुग्राह्यो भवतां सुहृदां ततः। धृतराष्ट्रे यथापूर्वं वृत्तिं वर्तितुमर्हथ ॥१२-४१-६॥
If you consider me worthy of your favor, O friends, then you should continue to behave towards Dhritarashtra as you did before.
एष नाथो हि जगतो भवतां च मया सह। अस्यैव पृथिवी कृत्स्ना पाण्डवाः सर्व एव च ॥ एतन्मनसि कर्तव्यं भवद्भिर्वचनं मम ॥१२-४१-७॥
This is the lord of the world, of you and with me. The entire earth belongs to him alone, as do all the Pāṇḍavas. You must keep my word in mind and act accordingly.
अनुगम्य च राजानं यथेष्टं गम्यतामिति। पौरजानपदान्सर्वान्विसृज्य कुरुनन्दनः ॥ यौवराज्येन कौरव्यो भीमसेनमयोजयत् ॥१२-४१-८॥
After approaching the king and saying, 'Let him go as he wishes,' and dismissing all the citizens and countrymen, O joy of the Kurus, the Kaurava appointed Bhimasena as the crown prince.
मन्त्रे च निश्चये चैव षाड्गुण्यस्य च चिन्तने। विदुरं बुद्धिसम्पन्नं प्रीतिमान्वै समादिशत् ॥१२-४१-९॥
In matters of counsel, decision, and deliberation regarding the six policies, he appointed Vidura, who was wise and affectionate.
कृताकृतपरिज्ञाने तथायव्ययचिन्तने। सञ्जयं योजयामास ऋद्धमृद्धैर्गुणैर्युतम् ॥१२-४१-१०॥
Sañjaya, who possessed complete knowledge of action and inaction and contemplated the imperishable, was engaged, endowed with virtues, and prosperous among the prosperous.
बलस्य परिमाणे च भक्तवेतनयोस्तथा। नकुलं व्यादिशद्राजा कर्मिणामन्ववेक्षणे ॥१२-४१-११॥
The king appointed Nakula to supervise the measurement of the army and also the distribution of food and wages to the workers.
परचक्रोपरोधे च दृप्तानां चावमर्दने। युधिष्ठिरो महाराजः फल्गुनं व्यादिदेश ह ॥१२-४१-१२॥
When the enemy army obstructed and the arrogant needed to be subdued, King Yudhishthira commanded Arjuna (Phalguna).
द्विजानां वेदकार्येषु कार्येष्वन्येषु चैव हि। धौम्यं पुरोधसां श्रेष्ठं व्यादिदेश परन्तपः ॥१२-४१-१३॥
For the twice-born, in Vedic rituals and other duties as well, Dhaumya, the foremost among priests, was appointed by the mighty conqueror.
सहदेवं समीपस्थं नित्यमेव समादिशत्। तेन गोप्यो हि नृपतिः सर्वावस्थो विशां पते ॥१२-४१-१४॥
With Sahadeva always nearby, he continually gave instructions. By him, the king, in every situation, protected the cowherd women, O lord of the people.
यान्यानमन्ययोग्यांश्च येषु येष्विह कर्मसु। तांस्तांस्तेष्वेव युयुजे प्रीयमाणो महीपतिः ॥१२-४१-१५॥
The king, being pleased, engaged only those persons in those actions for which they were suitable.
विदुरं सञ्जयं चैव युयुत्सुं च महामतिम्। अब्रवीत्परवीरघ्नो धर्मात्मा धर्मवत्सलः ॥१२-४१-१६॥
The destroyer of enemy heroes, righteous and devoted to dharma, spoke to Vidura, Sanjaya, and the wise Yuyutsu.
उत्थायोत्थाय यत्कार्यमस्य राज्ञः पितुर्मम। सर्वं भवद्भिः कर्तव्यमप्रमत्तैर्यथातथम् ॥१२-४१-१७॥
Rise up again and again; whatever duty belongs to him, to the king, my father, all of it must be performed by you all with vigilance, exactly as it should be.
पौरजानपदानां च यानि कार्याणि नित्यशः। राजानं समनुज्ञाप्य तानि कार्याणि धर्मतः ॥१२-४१-१८॥
The regular duties of townsmen and country people, after obtaining the king's permission, should be performed in accordance with dharma.
