मुनिरुवाच॥
The sage said.
अथ चेत्पौरुषं किञ्चित्क्षत्रियात्मनि पश्यसि। ब्रवीमि हन्त ते नीतिं राज्यस्य प्रतिपत्तये ॥१२-१०६-१॥
Now, if you perceive even a little heroism in your warrior nature, I shall tell you the policy for attaining the kingdom.
तां चेच्छक्ष्यस्यनुष्ठातुं कर्म चैव करिष्यसि। शृणु सर्वमशेषेण यत्त्वां वक्ष्यामि तत्त्वतः ॥१२-१०६-२॥
If you are able to perform that action and will indeed do it, then listen as I tell you everything in full detail and truth.
आचरिष्यसि चेत्कर्म महतोऽर्थानवाप्स्यसि। राज्यं राज्यस्य मन्त्रं वा महतीं वा पुनः श्रियम् ॥ यद्येतद्रोचते राजन्पुनर्ब्रूहि ब्रवीमि ते ॥१२-१०६-३॥
If you perform this action, you will gain great benefits—either the kingdom, its counsel, or great prosperity once more. If this is agreeable to you, O king, speak again and I shall tell you further.
राजपुत्र उवाच॥
The prince said.
ब्रवीतु भगवान्नीतिमुपपन्नोऽस्म्यहं प्रभो। अमोघमिदमद्यास्तु त्वया सह समागतम् ॥१२-१०६-४॥
O revered one, let you speak; I am endowed with proper conduct, O lord. May this unfailing event today be accomplished together with you.
मुनिरुवाच॥
The sage said.
हित्वा स्तम्भं च मानं च क्रोधहर्षौ भयं तथा। प्रत्यमित्रं निषेवस्व प्रणिपत्य कृताञ्जलिः ॥१२-१०६-५॥
Abandon arrogance, pride, anger, delight, and fear; approach your adversary with humility, bowing down and with joined palms, and serve them.
तमुत्तमेन शौचेन कर्मणा चाभिराधय। दातुमर्हति ते वृत्तिं वैदेहः सत्यसङ्गरः ॥१२-१०६-६॥
Please him with excellent purity and action; the king of Videha, steadfast in truth, is worthy to give you a livelihood.
प्रमाणं सर्वभूतेषु प्रग्रहं च गमिष्यसि। ततः सहायान्सोत्साहाँल्लप्स्यसेऽव्यसनाञ्शुचीन् ॥१२-१०६-७॥
You will proceed with measure and restraint among all beings. Thereafter, you will gain companions who are enthusiastic, pure, and free from misfortune.
वर्तमानः स्वशास्त्रे वै संयतात्मा जितेन्द्रियः। अभ्युद्धरति चात्मानं प्रसादयति च प्रजाः ॥१२-१०६-८॥
One who abides in his own śāstra, with self-control and mastery over the senses, uplifts himself and brings happiness to the people.
तेनैव त्वं धृतिमता श्रीमता चाभिसत्कृतः। प्रमाणं सर्वभूतेषु गत्वा प्रग्रहणं महत् ॥१२-१०६-९॥
You, having been honored by the steadfast and prosperous one, have attained great authority and acceptance among all beings.
ततः सुहृद्बलं लब्ध्वा मन्त्रयित्वा सुमन्त्रितम्। अन्तरैर्भेदयित्वारीन्बिल्वं बिल्वेन शातय ॥ परैर्वा संविदं कृत्वा बलमप्यस्य घातय ॥१२-१०६-१०॥
Then, after securing the support of friends and consulting well, divide the enemies by stratagems and strike Bilva with Bilva; or, by making an agreement with others, destroy his force as well.
अलभ्या ये शुभा भावाः स्त्रियश्चाच्छादनानि च। शय्यासनानि यानानि महार्हाणि गृहाणि च ॥१२-१०६-११॥
Those auspicious states, women, coverings, beds, seats, vehicles, and very precious houses which are not attainable.
पक्षिणो मृगजातानि रसा गन्धाः फलानि च। तेष्वेव सज्जयेथास्त्वं यथा नश्येत्स्वयं परः ॥१२-१०६-१२॥
You should attach yourself only to birds, animal species, juices, scents, and fruits, so that the other perishes and you yourself remain.
यद्येव प्रतिषेद्धव्यो यद्युपेक्षणमर्हति। न जातु विवृतः कार्यः शत्रुर्विनयमिच्छता ॥१२-१०६-१३॥
If an enemy is to be restrained or neglected, one who desires discipline should never act openly against the enemy.
वसस्व परमामित्रविषये प्राज्ञसंमते। भजस्व श्वेतकाकीयैर्मित्राधममनर्थकैः ॥१२-१०६-१४॥
Live in the territory of the greatest enemy, as approved by the wise. Associate with the white-crow people, who are the lowest and most worthless of friends.
आरम्भांश्चास्य महतो दुष्करांस्त्वं प्रयोजय। नदीबन्धविरोधांश्च बलवद्भिर्विरुध्यताम् ॥१२-१०६-१५॥
You set him to great and difficult undertakings, and let the strong oppose those who resist the damming of the river.
उद्यानानि महार्हाणि शयनान्यासनानि च। प्रतिभोगसुखेनैव कोशमस्य विरेचय ॥१२-१०६-१६॥
Empty his treasury by means of gardens, luxurious beds, seats, and the pleasures of enjoyment.
यज्ञदानप्रशंसास्मै ब्राह्मणेष्वनुवर्ण्यताम्। ते त्वत्प्रियं करिष्यन्ति तं चेष्यन्ति वृका इव ॥१२-१०६-१७॥
Let the praise of sacrifice and giving be recounted to him among the Brāhmaṇas. They will do what pleases you and will pursue him like wolves.
असंशयं पुण्यशीलः प्राप्नोति परमां गतिम्। त्रिविष्टपे पुण्यतमं स्थानं प्राप्नोति पार्थिवः ॥ कोशक्षये त्वमित्राणां वशं कौसल्य गच्छति ॥१२-१०६-१८॥
Certainly, a virtuous person attains the highest state. In heaven, the king attains the most exalted place. But, O Kausalya, when the treasury is depleted, the king falls under the power of his enemies. 12-106-18.
उभयत्र प्रसक्तस्य धर्मे चाधर्म एव च। बलार्थमूलं व्युच्छिद्येत्तेन नन्दन्ति शत्रवः ॥१२-१०६-१९॥
If one is attached in both dharma and adharma, the root of the pursuit of power should be destroyed by that; otherwise, enemies rejoice.
निन्द्यास्य मानुषं कर्म दैवमस्योपवर्णय। असंशयं दैवपरः क्षिप्रमेव विनश्यति ॥१२-१०६-२०॥
Condemn the human action in this case; explain the role of fate. Without doubt, one who relies solely on fate quickly perishes.
याजयैनं विश्वजिता सर्वस्वेन वियुज्यताम्। ततो गच्छत्वसिद्धार्थः पीड्यमानो महाजनम् ॥१२-१०६-२१॥
Make him perform the Viśvajit sacrifice with all his possessions, so that he is deprived of everything. Then, let him go forth, unsuccessful and afflicted, among the great people.
त्यागधर्मविदं मुण्डं कञ्चिदस्योपवर्णय। अपि त्यागं बुभूषेत कच्चिद्गच्छेदनामयम् ॥१२-१०६-२२॥
Describe someone among them who is a shaven-headed knower of the duty of renunciation. Does he desire renunciation, and would he go without illness?
सिद्धेनौषधयोगेन सर्वशत्रुविनाशिना। नागानश्वान्मनुष्यांश्च कृतकैरुपघातय ॥१२-१०६-२३॥
Using the perfected medicinal formula that destroys all enemies, bring about the destruction of serpents, horses, and men through artificial means.
एते चान्ये च बहवो दम्भयोगाः सुनिश्चिताः। शक्या विषहता कर्तुं नक्लीबेन नृपात्मज ॥१२-१०६-२४॥
O prince, these and many other well-determined acts of hypocrisy can be overcome and accomplished, but not by a person lacking manliness.
