अथ चेत्पौरुषं किञ्चित्क्षत्रियात्मनि पश्यसि। ब्रवीमि हन्त ते नीतिं राज्यस्य प्रतिपत्तये ॥१२-१०६-१॥
atha cet pauruṣaṃ kiñcit kṣatriyātmani paśyasi। bravīmi hanta te nītiṃ rājyasya pratipattaye ॥12-106-1॥
[अथ (atha) - now; then; चेत् (cet) - if; पौरुषं (pauruṣam) - manliness; heroism; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - a little; somewhat; क्षत्रियात्मनि (kṣatriyātmani) - in the Kṣatriya self; in the warrior's nature; पश्यसि (paśyasi) - you see; you perceive; ब्रवीमि (bravīmi) - I speak; I tell; हन्त (hanta) - indeed; now; ते (te) - to you; for you; नीतिं (nītiṃ) - policy; conduct; guidance; राज्यस्य (rājyasya) - of the kingdom; प्रतिपत्तये (pratipattaye) - for attainment; for acquisition;]
(Now, if you see even a little manliness in the Kṣatriya self, I tell you indeed the policy for you for the attainment of the kingdom.)
Now, if you perceive even a little heroism in your warrior nature, I shall tell you the policy for attaining the kingdom.
तां चेच्छक्ष्यस्यनुष्ठातुं कर्म चैव करिष्यसि। शृणु सर्वमशेषेण यत्त्वां वक्ष्यामि तत्त्वतः ॥१२-१०६-२॥
tāṃ cec chakṣyasy anuṣṭhātuṃ karma caiva kariṣyasi। śṛṇu sarvam aśeṣeṇa yat tvāṃ vakṣyāmi tattvataḥ ॥12-106-2॥
[ताम् (tām) - her; (accusative singular of sā) चेत् (cet) - if; शक्ष्यसि (śakṣyasi) - you will be able; अनुष्ठातुम् (anuṣṭhātum) - to perform; कर्म (karma) - action; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; करिष्यसि (kariṣyasi) - you will do; शृणु (śṛṇu) - listen; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; अशेषेण (aśeṣeṇa) - completely; यत् (yat) - which; त्वाम् (tvām) - to you; वक्ष्यामि (vakṣyāmi) - I shall tell; तत्त्वतः (tattvataḥ) - truly;]
(If you will be able to perform her (the action) and indeed do the action, then listen completely to all that I shall tell you truly.)
If you are able to perform that action and will indeed do it, then listen as I tell you everything in full detail and truth.
आचरिष्यसि चेत्कर्म महतोऽर्थानवाप्स्यसि। राज्यं राज्यस्य मन्त्रं वा महतीं वा पुनः श्रियम् ॥ यद्येतद्रोचते राजन्पुनर्ब्रूहि ब्रवीमि ते ॥१२-१०६-३॥
ācariṣyasi cet karma mahato'rthānavāpsyasi। rājyaṃ rājyasya mantraṃ vā mahatīṃ vā punaḥ śriyam ॥ yadyetadrocate rājan punarbrūhi bravīmi te ॥12-106-3॥
[आचरिष्यसि (ācariṣyasi) - you will perform; (from ā + car, to act) चेत् (cet) - if; कर्म (karma) - action; महतः (mahataḥ) - great; अर्थान् (arthān) - benefits; अवाप्स्यसि (avāpsyasi) - you will obtain; राज्यम् (rājyaṃ) - kingdom; राज्यस्य (rājyasya) - of the kingdom; मन्त्रम् (mantram) - counsel; वा (vā) - or; महतीम् (mahatīm) - great; वा (vā) - or; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; श्रियम् (śriyam) - prosperity; यदि (yadi) - if; एतत् (etat) - this; रोचते (rocate) - pleases; राजन् (rājan) - O king; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; ब्रूहि (brūhi) - say; ब्रवीमि (bravīmi) - I will say; ते (te) - to you;]
(If you perform the action, you will obtain great benefits. Kingdom, or the kingdom's counsel, or great prosperity again. If this pleases you, O king, say again, I will tell you.)
If you perform this action, you will gain great benefits—either the kingdom, its counsel, or great prosperity once more. If this is agreeable to you, O king, speak again and I shall tell you further.
राजपुत्र उवाच॥

ब्रवीतु भगवान्नीतिमुपपन्नोऽस्म्यहं प्रभो। अमोघमिदमद्यास्तु त्वया सह समागतम् ॥१२-१०६-४॥
bravītu bhagavān nītim upapanno'smy ahaṃ prabho। amogham idam adyāstu tvayā saha samāgatam ॥12-106-4॥
[ब्रवीतु (bravītu) - let (him) speak; भगवान् (bhagavān) - O revered one; नीतिम् (nītim) - conduct; उपपन्नः (upapannaḥ) - endowed (with); अस्मि (asmi) - I am; अहम् (aham) - I; प्रभो (prabho) - O lord; अमोघम् (amogham) - unfailing; इदम् (idam) - this; अद्य (adya) - today; अस्तु (astu) - let it be; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; सह (saha) - with; समागतम् (samāgatam) - come together;]
(Let the revered one speak; I am endowed with conduct, O lord. Let this unfailing (thing) today be come together with you.)

हित्वा स्तम्भं च मानं च क्रोधहर्षौ भयं तथा। प्रत्यमित्रं निषेवस्व प्रणिपत्य कृताञ्जलिः ॥१२-१०६-५॥
hitvā stambhaṃ ca mānaṃ ca krodhaharṣau bhayaṃ tathā। pratyamitraṃ niṣevasva praṇipatya kṛtāñjaliḥ ॥12-106-5॥
[हित्वा (hitvā) - having abandoned; स्तम्भं (stambhaṃ) - arrogance; च (ca) - and; मानं (mānaṃ) - pride; च (ca) - and; क्रोधहर्षौ (krodhaharṣau) - anger and delight; भयं (bhayaṃ) - fear; तथा (tathā) - also; प्रत्यमित्रं (pratyamitraṃ) - adversary; निषेवस्व (niṣevasva) - serve; प्रणिपत्य (praṇipatya) - having bowed down; कृताञ्जलिः (kṛtāñjaliḥ) - with joined palms;]
(Having abandoned arrogance and pride, anger and delight, and also fear, serve the adversary, having bowed down, with joined palms.)
Abandon arrogance, pride, anger, delight, and fear; approach your adversary with humility, bowing down and with joined palms, and serve them.
तमुत्तमेन शौचेन कर्मणा चाभिराधय। दातुमर्हति ते वृत्तिं वैदेहः सत्यसङ्गरः ॥१२-१०६-६॥
tam uttamena śaucena karmaṇā cābhirādhaya। dātum arhati te vṛttiṃ vaidehaḥ satyasaṅgaraḥ ॥12-106-6॥
[तम् (tam) - him; उत्तमेन (uttamena) - by excellent; शौचेन (śaucena) - by purity; कर्मणा (karmaṇā) - by action; च (ca) - and; अभिराधय (abhirādhaya) - please; दातुम् (dātum) - to give; अर्हति (arhati) - is worthy; ते (te) - to you; वृत्तिम् (vṛttim) - livelihood; वैदेहः (vaidehaḥ) - the king of Videha; सत्यसङ्गरः (satyasaṅgaraḥ) - steadfast in truth;]
(Him by excellent purity and action please; to give is worthy to you livelihood the king of Videha steadfast in truth.)

प्रमाणं सर्वभूतेषु प्रग्रहं च गमिष्यसि। ततः सहायान्सोत्साहाँल्लप्स्यसेऽव्यसनाञ्शुचीन् ॥१२-१०६-७॥
pramāṇaṃ sarvabhūteṣu pragrahaṃ ca gamiṣyasi। tataḥ sahāyānsotsāhāṃllapsyase'vyasanāñśucīn ॥12-106-7॥
[प्रमाणम् (pramāṇam) - measure; सर्वभूतेषु (sarvabhūteṣu) - in all beings; प्रग्रहम् (pragraham) - restraint; च (ca) - and; गमिष्यसि (gamiṣyasi) - you will go; ततः (tataḥ) - then; सहायान् (sahāyān) - companions; सोत्साहान् (sotsāhān) - with enthusiasm; लप्स्यसे (lapsyase) - you will obtain; अव्यसनान् (avyasanān) - free from calamity; शुचीन् (śucīn) - pure;]
(You will go with measure and restraint among all beings. Then you will obtain companions who are enthusiastic, pure, and free from calamity.)
You will proceed with measure and restraint among all beings. Thereafter, you will gain companions who are enthusiastic, pure, and free from misfortune.
वर्तमानः स्वशास्त्रे वै संयतात्मा जितेन्द्रियः। अभ्युद्धरति चात्मानं प्रसादयति च प्रजाः ॥१२-१०६-८॥
vartamānaḥ svaśāstre vai saṃyatātmā jitendriyaḥ। abhyuddharati cātmānaṃ prasādayati ca prajāḥ ॥12-106-8॥
[वर्तमानः (vartamānaḥ) - being present; स्वशास्त्रे (svaśāstre) - in one's own śāstra; वै (vai) - indeed; संयतात्मा (saṃyatātmā) - self-controlled; जितेन्द्रियः (jitendriyaḥ) - one who has conquered the senses; अभ्युद्धरति (abhyuddharati) - lifts up; च (ca) - and; आत्मानं (ātmānaṃ) - the self; प्रसादयति (prasādayati) - pleases; च (ca) - and; प्रजाः (prajāḥ) - the people;]
(Being present in his own śāstra indeed, self-controlled, one who has conquered the senses, lifts up the self and pleases the people.)
One who abides in his own śāstra, with self-control and mastery over the senses, uplifts himself and brings happiness to the people.
तेनैव त्वं धृतिमता श्रीमता चाभिसत्कृतः। प्रमाणं सर्वभूतेषु गत्वा प्रग्रहणं महत् ॥१२-१०६-९॥
tenaiva tvaṃ dhṛtimatā śrīmatā cābhisatkṛtaḥ। pramāṇaṃ sarvabhūteṣu gatvā pragrahaṇaṃ mahat ॥12-106-9॥
[तेनैव (tenaiva) - by him only; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; धृतिमता (dhṛtimatā) - by the steadfast one; श्रीमता (śrīmatā) - by the prosperous one; च (ca) - and; अभिसत्कृतः (abhisatkṛtaḥ) - honored; प्रमाणं (pramāṇam) - authority; सर्वभूतेषु (sarvabhūteṣu) - among all beings; गत्वा (gatvā) - having attained; प्रग्रहणं (pragrahaṇam) - acceptance; महत् (mahat) - great;]
(By him only, you, honored by the steadfast and prosperous one, having attained authority among all beings, (have) great acceptance.)
You, having been honored by the steadfast and prosperous one, have attained great authority and acceptance among all beings.
ततः सुहृद्बलं लब्ध्वा मन्त्रयित्वा सुमन्त्रितम्। अन्तरैर्भेदयित्वारीन्बिल्वं बिल्वेन शातय ॥ परैर्वा संविदं कृत्वा बलमप्यस्य घातय ॥१२-१०६-१०॥
tataḥ suhṛdbalaṃ labdhvā mantrayitvā sumantritam। antaraiḥ bhedayitvā ārīn bilvaṃ bilvena śātaya॥ parair vā saṃvidaṃ kṛtvā balam apy asya ghātaya॥12-106-10॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; सुहृत्-बलम् (suhṛd-balam) - friend-force; लब्ध्वा (labdhvā) - having obtained; मन्त्रयित्वा (mantrayitvā) - having consulted; सुमन्त्रितम् (sumantritam) - well-advised; अन्तरैः (antaraiḥ) - by means (of stratagems); भेदयित्वा (bhedayitvā) - having divided; अरिन् (arīn) - enemies; बिल्वम् (bilvam) - Bilva (tree/club); बिल्वेन (bilvena) - with Bilva (tree/club); शातय (śātaya) - strike; परैः (paraiḥ) - by others; वा (vā) - or; संविदम् (saṃvidam) - agreement; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having made; बलम् (balam) - force; अपि (api) - also; अस्य (asya) - his; घातय (ghātaya) - destroy; १२-१०६-१० (12-106-10) - 12-106-10;]
(Then, having obtained the force of friends, having consulted and well-advised, by means (of stratagems) having divided the enemies, strike Bilva with Bilva; or by others, having made an agreement, also destroy his force.)

अलभ्या ये शुभा भावाः स्त्रियश्चाच्छादनानि च। शय्यासनानि यानानि महार्हाणि गृहाणि च ॥१२-१०६-११॥
alabhyā ye śubhā bhāvāḥ striyaścācchādanāni ca| śayyāsanāni yānāni mahārhāṇi gṛhāṇi ca ॥12-106-11॥
[अलभ्या (alabhyā) - not attainable; ये (ye) - which; शुभा (śubhā) - auspicious; भावाः (bhāvāḥ) - states; स्त्रियः (striyaḥ) - women; च (ca) - and; आच्छादनानि (ācchādanāni) - coverings; च (ca) - and; शय्या (śayyā) - beds; आसनानि (āsanāni) - seats; यानानि (yānāni) - vehicles; महार्हाणि (mahārhāṇi) - very precious; गृहाणि (gṛhāṇi) - houses; च (ca) - and;]
(Not attainable which auspicious states, women and coverings and beds, seats, vehicles, very precious houses and.)
Those auspicious states, women, coverings, beds, seats, vehicles, and very precious houses which are not attainable.
पक्षिणो मृगजातानि रसा गन्धाः फलानि च। तेष्वेव सज्जयेथास्त्वं यथा नश्येत्स्वयं परः ॥१२-१०६-१२॥
pakṣiṇo mṛgajātāni rasā gandhāḥ phalāni ca। teṣveva sajjayethāstvaṃ yathā naśyetsvayaṃ paraḥ ॥12-106-12॥
[पक्षिणः (pakṣiṇaḥ) - birds; मृगजातानि (mṛgajātāni) - animal species; रसाः (rasāḥ) - juices; गन्धाः (gandhāḥ) - scents; फलानि (phalāni) - fruits; च (ca) - and; तेषु (teṣu) - in these; एव (eva) - only; सज्जयेथाः (sajjayethāḥ) - should attach; त्वम् (tvam) - you; यथा (yathā) - so that; नश्येत् (naśyet) - perishes; स्वयम् (svayam) - oneself; परः (paraḥ) - the other;]
(Birds, animal species, juices, scents, and fruits; in these only you should attach, so that the other perishes, oneself (remains).)

यद्येव प्रतिषेद्धव्यो यद्युपेक्षणमर्हति। न जातु विवृतः कार्यः शत्रुर्विनयमिच्छता ॥१२-१०६-१३॥
yadyeva pratiṣeddhavyo yadyupekṣaṇamarhati। na jātu vivṛtaḥ kāryaḥ śatrurvinayamicchatā ॥12-106-13॥
[यद्येव (yadyeva) - if indeed; प्रतिषेद्धव्यः (pratiṣeddhavyaḥ) - to be restrained; यद्युपेक्षणम् (yadyupekṣaṇam) - if to be neglected; अर्हति (arhati) - deserves; न (na) - not; जातु (jātu) - ever; विवृतः (vivṛtaḥ) - open; कार्यः (kāryaḥ) - to be done; शत्रुः (śatruḥ) - enemy; विनयम् (vinayam) - discipline; इच्छता (icchatā) - by one desiring;]
(If indeed (an enemy) is to be restrained, if (an enemy) deserves to be neglected, never should an open action be done by one desiring discipline towards an enemy.)
If an enemy is to be restrained or neglected, one who desires discipline should never act openly against the enemy.
वसस्व परमामित्रविषये प्राज्ञसंमते। भजस्व श्वेतकाकीयैर्मित्राधममनर्थकैः ॥१२-१०६-१४॥
vasasva paramāmitraviṣaye prājñasammate। bhajasva śvetakākīyairmitrādhamamanarthakaiḥ ॥12-106-14॥
[वसस्व (vasasva) - dwell; reside; परम (parama) - supreme; highest; अमित्र (amitra) - enemy; non-friend; विषये (viṣaye) - in the domain; in the territory; प्राज्ञ (prājña) - wise; learned; संमते (sammate) - approved; agreed; भजस्व (bhajasva) - associate; seek; श्वेतकाकीयैः (śvetakākīyaiḥ) - with the white-crow people; with the white-crow group; मित्र (mitra) - friend; अधम (adhama) - lowest; base; अनर्थकैः (anarthakaiḥ) - with the useless ones; with the worthless ones;]
(Dwell in the domain of the supreme enemy, approved by the wise. Associate with the white-crow people, with the lowest and useless friends.)
Live in the territory of the greatest enemy, as approved by the wise. Associate with the white-crow people, who are the lowest and most worthless of friends.
आरम्भांश्चास्य महतो दुष्करांस्त्वं प्रयोजय। नदीबन्धविरोधांश्च बलवद्भिर्विरुध्यताम् ॥१२-१०६-१५॥
ārambhāṃś cāsya mahato duṣkarāṃs tvaṃ prayojaya. nadī-bandha-virodhāṃś ca balavadbhir virudhyatām ॥12-106-15॥
[आरम्भान् (ārambhān) - beginnings; initiatives; च (ca) - and; अस्य (asya) - his; महतः (mahataḥ) - great; दुष्करान् (duṣkarān) - difficult to accomplish; त्वम् (tvam) - you; प्रयोजय (prayojaya) - cause to be undertaken; नदीबन्धविरोधान् (nadī-bandha-virodhān) - oppositions to damming the river; च (ca) - and; बलवद्भिः (balavadbhiḥ) - by the strong; विरुध्यताम् (virudhyatām) - let them be opposed;]
(You cause him to undertake great and difficult initiatives. And let the strong oppose the oppositions to damming the river.)
You set him to great and difficult undertakings, and let the strong oppose those who resist the damming of the river.
उद्यानानि महार्हाणि शयनान्यासनानि च। प्रतिभोगसुखेनैव कोशमस्य विरेचय ॥१२-१०६-१६॥
udyānāni mahārhāṇi śayanānyāsanāni ca। pratibhogasukhenaiva kośamasya virecaya ॥12-106-16॥
[उद्यानानि (udyānāni) - gardens; महार्हाणि (mahārhāṇi) - very costly; शयनानि (śayanāni) - beds; आसनानि (āsanāni) - seats; च (ca) - and; प्रतिभोगसुखेन (pratibhogasukhena) - with the pleasure of enjoyment; एव (eva) - indeed; कोशम् (kośam) - treasury; अस्य (asya) - his; विरेचय (virecaya) - empty; ॥१२-१०६-१६॥ (॥12-106-16॥) -;]
(Gardens, very costly, beds, seats and with the pleasure of enjoyment indeed, empty his treasury.)

यज्ञदानप्रशंसास्मै ब्राह्मणेष्वनुवर्ण्यताम्। ते त्वत्प्रियं करिष्यन्ति तं चेष्यन्ति वृका इव ॥१२-१०६-१७॥
yajñadānapraśaṁsāsmai brāhmaṇeṣvanuvarṇyatām। te tvatpriyaṁ kariṣyanti taṁ ceṣyanti vṛkā iva ॥12-106-17॥
[यज्ञ (yajña) - sacrifice; दान (dāna) - gift; प्रशंसा (praśaṁsā) - praise; अस्मै (asmai) - to him; ब्राह्मणेषु (brāhmaṇeṣu) - among the Brāhmaṇas; अनुवर्ण्यताम् (anuvarṇyatām) - let it be recounted; ते (te) - they; त्वत् (tvat) - your; प्रियं (priyaṁ) - dear; करिष्यन्ति (kariṣyanti) - will do; तं (taṁ) - him; च (ca) - and; इष्यन्ति (iṣyanti) - will seek; वृका (vṛkā) - wolves; इव (iva) - like;]
(Let the praise of sacrifice and gift be recounted to him among the Brāhmaṇas. They will do what is dear to you and will seek him like wolves.)

असंशयं पुण्यशीलः प्राप्नोति परमां गतिम्। त्रिविष्टपे पुण्यतमं स्थानं प्राप्नोति पार्थिवः ॥ कोशक्षये त्वमित्राणां वशं कौसल्य गच्छति ॥१२-१०६-१८॥
asaṃśayaṃ puṇyaśīlaḥ prāpnoti paramāṃ gatim। triviṣṭape puṇyatamaṃ sthānaṃ prāpnoti pārthivaḥ ॥ kośakṣaye tvamitrāṇāṃ vaśaṃ kausalya gacchati ॥12-106-18॥
[असंशयं (asaṃśayam) - without doubt; पुण्यशीलः (puṇyaśīlaḥ) - one of virtuous character; प्राप्नोति (prāpnoti) - attains; परमां (paramām) - supreme; गतिम् (gatim) - state; त्रिविष्टपे (triviṣṭape) - in heaven; पुण्यतमं (puṇyatamaṃ) - most virtuous; स्थानं (sthānaṃ) - place; प्राप्नोति (prāpnoti) - attains; पार्थिवः (pārthivaḥ) - the king; कोशक्षये (kośakṣaye) - when the treasury is exhausted; तु (tu) - but; अमित्राणां (amitrāṇāṃ) - of enemies; वशं (vaśaṃ) - control; कौस्यल्य (kausalya) - O Kausalya; गच्छति (gacchati) - goes; १२-१०६-१८ (12-106-18) - 12-106-18;]
(Without doubt, one of virtuous character attains the supreme state. In heaven, the king attains the most virtuous place. But, O Kausalya, when the treasury is exhausted, the king goes under the control of enemies. 12-106-18.)
Certainly, a virtuous person attains the highest state. In heaven, the king attains the most exalted place. But, O Kausalya, when the treasury is depleted, the king falls under the power of his enemies. 12-106-18.
उभयत्र प्रसक्तस्य धर्मे चाधर्म एव च। बलार्थमूलं व्युच्छिद्येत्तेन नन्दन्ति शत्रवः ॥१२-१०६-१९॥
ubhayatra prasaktasya dharme cādharma eva ca। balārthamūlaṃ vyucchidyettena nandanti śatravaḥ ॥12-106-19॥
[उभयत्र (ubhayatra) - in both places; प्रसक्तस्य (prasaktasya) - of one attached; धर्मे (dharme) - in dharma; च (ca) - and; अधर्मे (adharme) - in adharma; एव (eva) - indeed; च (ca) - and; बलार्थमूलं (balārthamūlaṃ) - the root of the pursuit of power; व्युच्छिद्येत् (vyucchidyet) - should be destroyed; तेन (tena) - by that; नन्दन्ति (nandanti) - rejoice; शत्रवः (śatravaḥ) - enemies;]
(In both places, of one attached, in dharma and in adharma indeed and, the root of the pursuit of power should be destroyed by that; enemies rejoice.)
If one is attached in both dharma and adharma, the root of the pursuit of power should be destroyed by that; otherwise, enemies rejoice.
निन्द्यास्य मानुषं कर्म दैवमस्योपवर्णय। असंशयं दैवपरः क्षिप्रमेव विनश्यति ॥१२-१०६-२०॥
nindyāsya mānuṣaṃ karma daivamasyo'pavarṇaya। asaṃśayaṃ daivaparaḥ kṣiprameva vinaśyati ॥12-106-20॥
