यच्चास्य तेजः सुमहद्यच्च कर्म पुरातनम्। तन्मे सर्वं यथातत्त्वं प्रब्रूहि भरतर्षभ ॥१२-२०२-२॥

तिर्यग्योनिगतं रूपं कथं धारितवान्हरिः। केन कार्यविसर्गेण तन्मे ब्रूहि पितामह ॥१२-२०२-३॥

ततस्ते मधुपर्केण पूजां चक्रुरथो मयि। प्रतिगृह्य च तां पूजां प्रत्यनन्दमृषीनहम् ॥१२-२०२-५॥
tataste madhuparkeṇa pūjāṃ cakruratho mayi। pratigṛhya ca tāṃ pūjāṃ pratyanandamṛṣīnaham ॥12-202-5॥

पुरा दानवमुख्या हि क्रोधलोभसमन्विताः। बलेन मत्ताः शतशो नरकाद्या महासुराः ॥१२-२०२-७॥

In ancient times, the chiefs of the Dānavas, such as Naraka and others, who were filled with anger and greed and intoxicated by their strength, numbered in the hundreds among the great Asuras.
तथैव चान्ये बहवो दानवा युद्धदुर्मदाः। न सहन्ते स्म देवानां समृद्धिं तामनुत्तमाम् ॥१२-२०२-८॥
tathaiva cānye bahavo dānavā yuddhadurmadāḥ। na sahante sma devānāṃ samṛddhiṃ tāmanuttamām ॥12-202-8॥
[तथैव (tathaiva) - in the same way; च (ca) - and; अन्ये (anye) - others; बहवः (bahavaḥ) - many; दानवाः (dānavāḥ) - Dānavas; युद्धदुर्मदाः (yuddhadurmadāḥ) - arrogant due to battle; न (na) - not; सहन्ते (sahante) - endure; स्म (sma) - indeed; देवानाम् (devānām) - of the gods; समृद्धिम् (samṛddhim) - prosperity; ताम् (tām) - that; अनुत्तमाम् (anuttamām) - unsurpassed;]
(In the same way and others, many Dānavas, arrogant due to battle, did not indeed endure the prosperity of the gods, that unsurpassed (prosperity).)
Likewise, many other Dānavas, intoxicated by battle, could not bear the unsurpassed prosperity of the gods.
दानवैरर्द्यमानास्तु देवा देवर्षयस्तथा। न शर्म लेभिरे राजन्विशमानास्ततस्ततः ॥१२-२०२-९॥
dānavairardyamānāstu devā devarṣayastathā। na śarma lebhire rājanviśamānastatastataḥ ॥12-202-9॥

(But the gods and the divine sages, being oppressed by the Dānavas, O king, did not obtain happiness, wandering here and there.)

पृथिवीं चार्तरूपां ते समपश्यन्दिवौकसः। दानवैरभिसङ्कीर्णां घोररूपैर्महाबलैः ॥ भारार्तामपकृष्टां च दुःखितां संनिमज्जतीम् ॥१२-२०२-१०॥
pṛthivīṃ cārtarūpāṃ te samapaśyandivaukasaḥ। dānavairabhisaṅkīrṇāṃ ghorarūpairmahābalaiḥ ॥ bhārārtāmapakṛṣṭāṃ ca duḥkhitāṃ saṃnimajjatīm ॥12-202-10॥

(The dwellers of heaven saw the earth, in a form of distress, overrun by the Dānavas of terrible forms and great strength, oppressed by burden, dragged away, afflicted, and sinking down.)
The gods beheld the earth, overwhelmed by powerful and terrifying Dānavas, weighed down by suffering, dragged away, and sinking in distress.
अथादितेयाः सन्त्रस्ता ब्रह्माणमिदमब्रुवन्। कथं शक्यामहे ब्रह्मन्दानवैरुपमर्दनम् ॥१२-२०२-११॥
athāditeyāḥ santrastā brahmāṇam idam abruvan। kathaṃ śakyāmahe brahman dānavair upamardanam ॥12-202-11॥

(Then the sons of Aditi, frightened, said this to Brahmā: "How are we able, O Brahmā, to withstand the oppression by the Dānavas?")

स्वयम्भूस्तानुवाचेदं निसृष्टोऽत्र विधिर्मया। ते वरेणाभिसंमत्ता बलेन च मदेन च ॥१२-२०२-१२॥
svayambhūstānuvācedaṃ nisṛṣṭo'tra vidhirmayā। te vareṇābhisaṃmattā balena ca madena ca ॥12-202-12॥

(The self-born (Brahmā) said this to them: 'Dispatched here by me, they, fully consented by boon, by strength and by pride.')
Brahmā, the self-born, said to them: 'Dispatched here by me, they have been fully empowered by boon, strength, and pride.'
नावभोत्स्यन्ति संमूढा विष्णुमव्यक्तदर्शनम्। वराहरूपिणं देवमधृष्यममरैरपि ॥१२-२०२-१३॥
nāvabhotsyanti saṁmūḍhā viṣṇumavyaktadarśanam। varāharūpiṇaṁ devamadhṛśyamamarairapi ॥12-202-13॥
[न (na) - not; अवभोत्स्यन्ति (avabhotsyanti) - will understand; संमूढाः (saṁmūḍhāḥ) - completely deluded ones; विष्णुम् (viṣṇum) - Viṣṇu; अव्यक्तदर्शनम् (avyaktadarśanam) - whose form is unmanifest; वराहरूपिणम् (varāharūpiṇam) - having the form of a boar; देवम् (devam) - the god; अधृष्यम् (adhṛśyam) - unperceivable; अमरैः (amaraiḥ) - by the immortals; अपि (api) - even;]
(Not will understand completely deluded ones Viṣṇu whose form is unmanifest, having the form of a boar, the god, unperceivable even by the immortals.)

एष वेगेन गत्वा हि यत्र ते दानवाधमाः। अन्तर्भूमिगता घोरा निवसन्ति सहस्रशः ॥ शमयिष्यति श्रुत्वा ते जहृषुः सुरसत्तमाः ॥१२-२०२-१४॥

[एष (eṣa) - this; वेगेन (vegena) - with speed; गत्वा (gatvā) - having gone; हि (hi) - indeed; यत्र (yatra) - where; ते (te) - those; दानवाधमाः (dānavādhamāḥ) - lowest among Dānavas; अन्तर्भूमिगता (antarbhūmigatā) - gone beneath the earth; घोरा (ghorā) - terrible; निवसन्ति (nivasanti) - dwell; सहस्रशः (sahasraśaḥ) - by thousands; शमयिष्यति (śamayiṣyati) - will subdue; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; ते (te) - they; जहृषुः (jahṛṣuḥ) - rejoiced; सुरसत्तमाः (surasattamāḥ) - best among the gods;]
(This, having gone with speed indeed where those lowest among Dānavas, gone beneath the earth, terrible, dwell by thousands, will subdue. Having heard, they, the best among the gods, rejoiced.)
He will quickly go to where those vile Dānavas, thousands of terrible ones dwelling beneath the earth, are, and subdue them. Hearing this, the best of the gods rejoiced.
ततो विष्णुर्महातेजा वाराहं रूपमाश्रितः। अन्तर्भूमिं सम्प्रविश्य जगाम दितिजान्प्रति ॥१२-२०२-१५॥
tato viṣṇur-mahātejā vārāhaṃ rūpam-āśritaḥ। antarbhūmiṃ sampraviśya jagāma ditijān-prati ॥12-202-15॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; विष्णुः (viṣṇuḥ) - Viṣṇu; महातेजाः (mahātejāḥ) - of great splendor; वाराहम् (vārāham) - boar; रूपम् (rūpam) - form; आश्रितः (āśritaḥ) - assumed; अन्तर्भूमिम् (antarbhūmim) - into the earth; सम्प्रविश्य (sampraviśya) - having entered; जगाम (jagāma) - went; दितिजान् (ditijān) - the sons of Diti (demons); प्रति (prati) - towards;]
(Then Viṣṇu, of great splendor, having assumed the form of a boar, having entered into the earth, went towards the sons of Diti (demons).)

दृष्ट्वा च सहिताः सर्वे दैत्याः सत्त्वममानुषम्। प्रसह्य सहसा सर्वे सन्तस्थुः कालमोहिताः ॥१२-२०२-१६॥
dṛṣṭvā ca sahitāḥ sarve daityāḥ sattvam-amānuṣam। prasahya sahasā sarve santasthuḥ kālamohitāḥ ॥12-202-16॥

(Having seen, and together, all the Daityas, the non-human nature, by force, suddenly, all stood, deluded by Time.)
Seeing this, all the Daityas together, perceiving the non-human nature, suddenly and forcibly stood still, deluded by Time.
सर्वे च समभिद्रुत्य वराहं जगृहुः समम्। सङ्क्रुद्धाश्च वराहं तं व्यकर्षन्त समन्ततः ॥१२-२०२-१७॥
sarve ca samabhidrutya varāhaṃ jagṛhuḥ samam। saṅkruddhāśca varāhaṃ taṃ vyakarṣanta samantataḥ ॥12-202-17॥

दानवेन्द्रा महाकाया महावीर्या बलोच्छ्रिताः। नाशक्नुवंश्च किञ्चित्ते तस्य कर्तुं तदा विभो ॥१२-२०२-१८॥
dānavendrā mahākāyā mahāvīryā balocchritāḥ। nāśaknuvanśca kiñcitte tasya kartuṃ tadā vibho ॥12-202-18॥
[दानवेन्द्राः (dānavendrāḥ) - lords of the Dānavas; महाकायाः (mahākāyāḥ) - of great bodies; महावीर्याः (mahāvīryāḥ) - of great strength; बलोच्छ्रिताः (balocchritāḥ) - exalted in power; न (na) - not; अशक्नुवन् (aśaknuvan) - were able; च (ca) - and; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - even a little; ते (te) - they; तस्य (tasya) - of him; कर्तुम् (kartum) - to do; तदा (tadā) - then; विभो (vibho) - O lord;]

ततोऽगमन्विस्मयं ते दानवेन्द्रा भयात्तदा। संशयं गतमात्मानं मेनिरे च सहस्रशः ॥१२-२०२-१९॥
tato'gamānvismayaṃ te dānavendrā bhayāttadā। saṃśayaṃ gatamātmānaṃ menire ca sahasraśaḥ ॥12-202-19॥

ततो देवादिदेवः स योगात्मा योगसारथिः। योगमास्थाय भगवांस्तदा भरतसत्तम ॥१२-२०२-२०॥

Then, O best of the Bharatas, the blessed Lord, the supreme among gods, himself the soul of yoga and the charioteer of yoga, having resorted to yoga at that time.
विननाद महानादं क्षोभयन्दैत्यदानवान्। संनादिता येन लोकाः सर्वाश्चैव दिशो दश ॥१२-२०२-२१॥
vinanāda mahānādaṃ kṣobhayandaityadānavān। saṃnāditā yena lokāḥ sarvāścaiva diśo daśa ॥12-202-21॥

(He thundered a great sound, agitating the Daityas and Dānavas; by whom all the worlds and indeed the ten directions were resounded.)

(By that reverberating sound, the worlds came to agitation. And all the directions and the gods headed by Śakra were disturbed.)

(Motionless the world also became exceedingly then; immobile and moving indeed by that sound bewildered.)

(Then they, all the Dānavas, frightened by that sound, fell, their life departed, and indeed, bewildered by Viṣṇu's energy.)

रसातलगतांश्चैव वराहस्त्रिदशद्विषः। खुरैः संदारयामास मांसमेदोस्थिसञ्चयम् ॥१२-२०२-२५॥

(The boar, indeed, with his hooves tore apart the heap of flesh, fat, and bone of the enemies of the gods who had gone to the netherworld.)

(Then all the hosts of gods addressed the Grandfather. O god, what kind of sound is this? O mighty one, we do not know this. Who indeed is that? Or whose sound is this by which the world has been agitated?)
Then all the gods approached Brahmā and said: "O god, what is this sound? O mighty one, we do not know it. Who is that, or whose sound is this by which the world has been disturbed?"
एतस्मिन्नन्तरे विष्णुर्वाराहं रूपमास्थितः। उदतिष्ठन्महादेवः स्तूयमानो महर्षिभिः ॥१२-२०२-२८॥
etasminn-antare viṣṇur vārāhaṃ rūpam āsthitaḥ। udatiṣṭhan mahādevaḥ stūyamāno maharṣibhiḥ ॥12-202-28॥

(Having done this action very well, which is impossible, the one of immeasurable radiance, greatly fortunate and of great splendor, having arrived at his own self.)
