ब्राह्मण उवाच॥
The brāhmaṇa said.
अतिभारोद्यतस्यैव भारापनयनं महत्। पराश्वासकरं वाक्यमिदं मे भवतः श्रुतम् ॥१२-३४४-१॥
For one who is greatly burdened, the removal of the burden is truly great. This statement, which brings great relief, I have heard from you. (12-344-1)
अध्वक्लान्तस्य शयनं स्थानक्लान्तस्य चासनम्। तृषितस्य च पानीयं क्षुधार्तस्य च भोजनम् ॥१२-३४४-२॥
A bed for one wearied by travel, a seat for one tired from standing, water for the thirsty, and food for the hungry. (12-344-2)
ईप्सितस्येव सम्प्राप्तिरन्नस्य समयेऽतिथेः। एषितस्यात्मनः काले वृद्धस्येव सुतो यथा ॥१२-३४४-३॥
Just as the attainment of desired food at the time of a guest, so too is the attainment of a sought-after son for an old man at the right time. (12-344-3)
मनसा चिन्तितस्येव प्रीतिस्निग्धस्य दर्शनम्। प्रह्रादयति मां वाक्यं भवता यदुदीरितम् ॥१२-३४४-४॥
The sight of one who is lovingly remembered in the mind delights me as if I am seeing someone dear; the words spoken by you bring me joy. (12-344-4)
दत्तचक्षुरिवाकाशे पश्यामि विमृशामि च। प्रज्ञानवचनाद्योऽयमुपदेशो हि मे कृतः ॥ बाढमेवं करिष्यामि यथा मां भाषते भवान् ॥१२-३४४-५॥
It is as if I have been given sight in the sky; I see and reflect. From your words of wisdom, this instruction has indeed been given to me. Certainly, I will act just as you have spoken to me. (12-344-5)
इहेमां रजनीं साधो निवसस्व मया सह। प्रभाते यास्यति भवान्पर्याश्वस्तः सुखोषितः ॥ असौ हि भगवान्सूर्यो मन्दरश्मिरवाङ्मुखः ॥१२-३४४-६॥
O noble one, stay here with me tonight; in the morning, you may depart, fully rested and having spent the night happily. For now, the blessed sun with gentle rays is setting. (12-344-6)
भीष्म उवाच॥
Bhishma said.
ततस्तेन कृतातिथ्यः सोऽतिथिः शत्रुसूदन। उवास किल तां रात्रिं सह तेन द्विजेन वै ॥१२-३४४-७॥
Then, having been offered hospitality by him, the guest—destroyer of enemies—indeed stayed that night together with the twice-born. (12-344-7)
तत्तच्च धर्मसंयुक्तं तयोः कथयतोस्तदा। व्यतीता सा निशा कृत्स्ना सुखेन दिवसोपमा ॥१२-३४४-८॥
While those two were speaking about that and other matters connected with dharma, then that entire night, happy as if it were day, passed. (12-344-8)
ततः प्रभातसमये सोऽतिथिस्तेन पूजितः। ब्राह्मणेन यथाशक्त्या स्वकार्यमभिकाङ्क्षता ॥१२-३४४-९॥
Then, at dawn, the guest was honored by the brāhmaṇa to the best of his ability, while desiring to attend to his own work. (12-344-9)
ततः स विप्रः कृतधर्मनिश्चयः; कृताभ्यनुज्ञः स्वजनेन धर्मवित्। यथोपदिष्टं भुजगेन्द्रसंश्रयं; जगाम काले सुकृतैकनिश्चयः ॥१२-३४४-१०॥
Then that brāhmaṇa, having firmly resolved upon dharma and having received permission from his family, being a knower of dharma, went at the proper time, as instructed, to the refuge of the king of serpents, his mind set solely on virtuous deeds. (12-344-10)
