स वनानि विचित्राणि तीर्थानि च सरांसि च। अभिगच्छन्क्रमेण स्म कञ्चिन्मुनिमुपस्थितः ॥१२-३४५-१॥
sa vanāni vicitrāṇi tīrthāni ca sarāṃsi ca। abhigacchan krameṇa sma kañcin munim upasthitaḥ ॥12-345-1॥
[स (sa) - he; वनानि (vanāni) - forests; विचित्राणि (vicitrāṇi) - variegated; तीर्थानि (tīrthāni) - sacred fords; च (ca) - and; सरांसि (sarāṃsi) - lakes; च (ca) - and; अभिगच्छन् (abhigacchan) - approaching; क्रमेण (krameṇa) - in order; स्म (sma) - indeed; कञ्चित् (kañcit) - a certain; मुनिम् (munim) - sage; उपस्थितः (upasthitaḥ) - having come near;]
(He, forests variegated sacred fords and lakes and, approaching in order indeed, a certain sage having come near.)
He, while visiting various forests, sacred fords, and lakes in order, indeed approached a certain sage. (12-345-1)
तं स तेन यथोद्दिष्टं नागं विप्रेण ब्राह्मणः। पर्यपृच्छद्यथान्यायं श्रुत्वैव च जगाम सः ॥१२-३४५-२॥
taṃ sa tena yathoddiṣṭaṃ nāgaṃ vipreṇa brāhmaṇaḥ। paryapṛcchadyathānyāyaṃ śrutvaiva ca jagāma saḥ ॥12-345-2॥
[तं (taṃ) - him; स (sa) - he; तेन (tena) - by him; यथोद्दिष्टं (yathoddiṣṭam) - as instructed; नागं (nāgam) - Nāga; विप्रेण (vipreṇa) - by the Brāhmaṇa; ब्राह्मणः (brāhmaṇaḥ) - Brāhmaṇa; पर्यपृच्छत् (paryapṛcchat) - asked; यथान्यायं (yathānyāyam) - according to rule; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; एव (eva) - indeed; च (ca) - and; जगाम (jagāma) - went; सः (saḥ) - he;]
(Him he by him as instructed Nāga by the Brāhmaṇa Brāhmaṇa asked according to rule having heard indeed and went he.)
The Brāhmaṇa, having asked the Nāga as instructed by the Brāhmaṇa according to rule, and having heard, he indeed went. (12-345-2)
सोऽभिगम्य यथाख्यातं नागायतनमर्थवित्। प्रोक्तवानहमस्मीति भोःशब्दालङ्कृतं वचः ॥१२-३४५-३॥
so'bhigamya yathākhyātaṃ nāgāyatanam arthavit। proktavān aham asmi iti bhoḥ-śabda-alaṅkṛtaṃ vacaḥ ॥12-345-3॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; अभिगम्य (abhigamya) - having approached; यथा (yathā) - as; आख्यातम् (ākhyātam) - declared; नागायतनम् (nāgāyatanam) - abode of serpents; अर्थवित् (arthavit) - knower of the meaning; प्रोक्तवान् (proktavān) - having spoken; अहम् (aham) - I; अस्मि (asmi) - am; इति (iti) - thus; भोः (bhoḥ) - O!; शब्द (śabda) - word; अलङ्कृतम् (alaṅkṛtam) - adorned; वचः (vacaḥ) - speech;]
(He, having approached the abode of serpents as declared, the knower of the meaning, having spoken "I am" thus, speech adorned with the word "bhoḥ".)
He, having reached the abode of serpents as described, the one who knows the meaning, spoke the words "I am"—speech adorned with the exclamation "bhoḥ". (12-345-3)
ततस्तस्य वचः श्रुत्वा रूपिणी धर्मवत्सला। दर्शयामास तं विप्रं नागपत्नी पतिव्रता ॥१२-३४५-४॥
tatas tasya vacaḥ śrutvā rūpiṇī dharmavatsalā। darśayāmāsa taṃ vipraṃ nāgapatnī pativratā ॥12-345-4॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; तस्य (tasya) - his; वचः (vacaḥ) - speech; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; रूपिणी (rūpiṇī) - beautiful (having form); धर्मवत्सला (dharmavatsalā) - devoted to dharma; दर्शयामास (darśayāmāsa) - showed; तं (taṃ) - him; विप्रं (vipraṃ) - the brāhmaṇa; नागपत्नी (nāgapatnī) - the serpent's wife; पतिव्रता (pativratā) - devoted to her husband;]
(Then, having heard his speech, the beautiful, devoted to dharma, showed herself to him, the brāhmaṇa, the serpent's wife, devoted to her husband.)
Then, upon hearing his words, the beautiful and virtuous wife of the serpent, devoted to her husband and to righteousness, revealed herself to the brāhmaṇa. (12-345-4)
सा तस्मै विधिवत्पूजां चक्रे धर्मपरायणा। स्वागतेनागतं कृत्वा किं करोमीति चाब्रवीत् ॥१२-३४५-५॥
sā tasmai vidhivat pūjāṃ cakre dharmaparāyaṇā। svāgatena āgataṃ kṛtvā kiṃ karomīti cābravīt ॥12-345-5॥
[सा (sā) - she; तस्मै (tasmai) - to him; विधिवत् (vidhivat) - according to rule; पूजां (pūjām) - worship; चक्रे (cakre) - performed; धर्मपरायणा (dharmaparāyaṇā) - devoted to dharma; स्वागतेन (svāgatena) - with welcome; आगतं (āgatam) - arrived; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having done; किं (kiṃ) - what; करोमि (karomi) - shall I do; इति (iti) - thus; च (ca) - and; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - she said;]
(She to him according to rule worship performed devoted to dharma; with welcome arrived having done what shall I do thus and she said (12-345-5))
She, devoted to dharma, performed worship for him according to the rules; having welcomed him, she said, "What shall I do?" (12-345-5)
ब्राह्मण उवाच॥

[ब्राह्मण (brāhmaṇa) - brāhmaṇa; (a member of the priestly class); उवाच (uvāca) - said; (he spoke);]

The brāhmaṇa said:
विश्रान्तोऽभ्यर्चितश्चास्मि भवत्या श्लक्ष्णया गिरा। द्रष्टुमिच्छामि भवति तं देवं नागमुत्तमम् ॥१२-३४५-६॥
viśrānto'bhyarcitaścāsmi bhavatyā ślakṣṇayā girā। draṣṭumicchāmi bhavati taṃ devaṃ nāgamuttamam ॥12-345-6॥
[विश्रान्तः (viśrāntaḥ) - rested; अभ्यर्चितः (abhyarcitaḥ) - honored; च (ca) - and; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; भवत्या (bhavatyā) - by you (feminine); श्लक्ष्णया (ślakṣṇayā) - gentle; गिरा (girā) - by speech; द्रष्टुम् (draṣṭum) - to see; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - I wish; भवति (bhavati) - O lady; तम् (tam) - that; देवम् (devam) - divine being; नागम् (nāgam) - serpent; उत्तमम् (uttamam) - best;]
(Rested, honored and I am by you with gentle speech. To see I wish, O lady, that divine being, the best serpent.)
I am rested and honored by your gentle words. O lady, I wish to see that divine being, the supreme serpent. (12-345-6)
एतद्धि परमं कार्यमेतन्मे फलमीप्सितम्। अनेनार्थेन चास्म्यद्य सम्प्राप्तः पन्नगालयम् ॥१२-३४५-७॥
etaddhi paramaṃ kāryametanme phalamīpsitam। anenārthena cāsmyadya samprāptaḥ pannagālayam ॥12-345-7॥
[एतत् (etat) - this; हि (hi) - indeed; परमम् (paramam) - supreme; कार्यम् (kāryam) - task; एतत् (etat) - this; मे (me) - my; फलम् (phalam) - fruit; ईप्सितम् (īpsitam) - desired; अनेन (anena) - by this; अर्थेन (arthena) - means; च (ca) - and; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; अद्य (adya) - today; सम्प्राप्तः (samprāptaḥ) - attained; पन्नगालयम् (pannagālayam) - abode of serpents;]
(This indeed supreme task, this my fruit desired. By this means and I am today attained abode of serpents.)
Indeed, this is the supreme task; this is the fruit I desired. By this means, today I have attained the abode of serpents. (12-345-7)
नागभार्योवाच॥
nāgabhāryovāca॥
[नाग (nāga) - serpent; भार्या (bhāryā) - wife; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]
(Serpent wife said;)
The wife of the serpent said.
आर्य सूर्यरथं वोढुं गतोऽसौ मासचारिकः। सप्ताष्टभिर्दिनैर्विप्र दर्शयिष्यत्यसंशयम् ॥१२-३४५-८॥
ārya sūryarathaṃ voḍhuṃ gato'sau māsacārikaḥ। saptāṣṭabhir dinair vipra darśayiṣyaty asaṃśayam ॥12-345-8॥
[आर्य (ārya) - noble one; सूर्यरथं (sūryaratham) - sun's chariot; वोढुं (voḍhum) - to bear; गतः (gataḥ) - gone; असौ (asau) - he; मासचारिकः (māsacārikaḥ) - monthly traveler; सप्ताष्टभिः (saptāṣṭabhiḥ) - with seven or eight; दिनैः (dinaiḥ) - days; विप्र (vipra) - O brāhmaṇa; दर्शयिष्यति (darśayiṣyati) - will show; असंशयम् (asaṃśayam) - without doubt;]
(Noble one, the monthly traveler has gone to bear the sun's chariot; with seven or eight days, O brāhmaṇa, he will show (it) without doubt. (12-345-8))

एतद्विदितमार्यस्य विवासकरणं मम। भर्तुर्भवतु किं चान्यत्क्रियतां तद्वदस्व मे ॥१२-३४५-९॥
etad-viditam āryasya vivāsa-karaṇaṃ mama। bhartuḥ bhavatu kiṃ ca anyat kriyatāṃ tad vadasva me ॥12-345-9॥
[एतत् (etat) - this; विदितम् (viditam) - known; आर्यस्य (āryasya) - of the noble one; विवासकरणम् (vivāsa-karaṇam) - banishment-making; (act of causing exile;) मम (mama) - my; भर्तुः (bhartuḥ) - of the husband; भवतु (bhavatu) - let it be; किम् (kim) - what; च (ca) - and; अन्यत् (anyat) - other; क्रियताम् (kriyatām) - let it be done; तत् (tat) - that; वदस्व (vadasva) - tell; मे (me) - to me;]
(This known of the noble one banishment-making my; of the husband let it be; what and other let it be done; that tell to me.)
This act of banishment is known to the noble one as mine; let it be for my husband; what else should be done, tell that to me. (12-345-9)
ब्राह्मण उवाच॥
brāhmaṇa uvāca॥
[ब्राह्मण (brāhmaṇa) - brāhmaṇa; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]

The brāhmaṇa said.
अनेन निश्चयेनाहं साध्वि सम्प्राप्तवानिह। प्रतीक्षन्नागमं देवि वत्स्याम्यस्मिन्महावने ॥१२-३४५-१०॥
anena niścayenāhaṃ sādhvi samprāptavāniha। pratīkṣannāgamaṃ devi vatsyāmyasminmahāvane ॥12-345-10॥
[अनेन (anena) - by this; निश्चयेन (niścayena) - with determination; अहम् (aham) - I; साध्वि (sādhvi) - O virtuous lady; सम्प्राप्तवान् (samprāptavān) - have arrived; इह (iha) - here; प्रतीक्षन् (pratīkṣan) - waiting; आगमम् (āgamam) - arrival; देवि (devi) - O goddess; वत्स्यामि (vatsyāmi) - I shall stay; अस्मिन् (asmin) - in this; महावने (mahāvane) - great forest;]
(By this determination I, O virtuous lady, have arrived here. Waiting for the arrival, O goddess, I shall stay in this great forest. "12-345-10")
With this resolve, O virtuous lady, I have come here. Awaiting the arrival, O goddess, I will remain in this great forest. (12-345-10)
सम्प्राप्तस्यैव चाव्यग्रमावेद्योऽहमिहागतः। ममाभिगमनं प्राप्तो वाच्यश्च वचनं त्वया ॥१२-३४५-११॥
samprāptasyaiva cāvyagram āvedyo'ham ihāgataḥ। mamābhigamanaṃ prāpto vācyaś ca vacanaṃ tvayā ॥12-345-11॥
[सम्प्राप्तस्य (samprāptasya) - of the one who has arrived together; एव (eva) - indeed; च (ca) - and; अव्यग्रम् (avyagram) - unagitated; आवेद्यः (āvedyaḥ) - to be announced; अहम् (aham) - I; इह (iha) - here; आगतः (āgataḥ) - arrived; मम (mama) - my; अभिगमनम् (abhigamanam) - approach; प्राप्तः (prāptaḥ) - has been attained; वाच्यः (vācyaḥ) - to be spoken; च (ca) - and; वचनम् (vacanam) - statement; त्वया (tvayā) - by you;]
(Of the one who has indeed arrived together and unagitated, I am to be announced here as arrived. My approach has been attained, and the statement is to be spoken by you.)
I, who have arrived here calmly and together, am to be announced as present. My arrival has been accomplished, and you must convey this message. (12-345-11)
अहमप्यत्र वत्स्यामि गोमत्याः पुलिने शुभे। कालं परिमिताहारो यथोक्तं परिपालयन् ॥१२-३४५-१२॥
aham apy atra vatsyāmi gomatyāḥ puline śubhe। kālaṃ parimitāhāro yathoktaṃ paripālayan ॥12-345-12॥
[अहम् (aham) - I; अपि (api) - also; अत्र (atra) - here; वत्स्यामि (vatsyāmi) - will dwell; गोमत्याः (gomatyāḥ) - of Gomati (river); पुलिने (puline) - on the sandbank; शुभे (śubhe) - auspicious; कालम् (kālam) - time; परिमिताहारः (parimitāhāraḥ) - with limited food; यथोक्तम् (yathoktam) - as stated; परिपालयन् (paripālayan) - observing;]
(I also here will dwell on the auspicious sandbank of Gomati, observing time with limited food as stated.)
I too will stay here on the auspicious bank of the Gomati river, observing the prescribed time and maintaining a limited diet as instructed. (12-345-12)

ततः स विप्रस्तां नागीं समाधाय पुनः पुनः। तदेव पुलिनं नद्याः प्रययौ ब्राह्मणर्षभः ॥१२-३४५-१३॥
tataḥ sa vipras tāṃ nāgīṃ samādhāya punaḥ punaḥ। tad eva pulinaṃ nadyāḥ prayayau brāhmaṇarṣabhaḥ ॥12-345-13॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; from that; स (sa) - he; विप्रः (vipraḥ) - brāhmaṇa; sage; ताम् (tām) - her; नागीम् (nāgīm) - female serpent; समाधाय (samādhāya) - having placed; having composed; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; तत् (tat) - that; एव (eva) - indeed; just; पुलिनम् (pulinam) - sandbank; riverbank; नद्याः (nadyāḥ) - of the river; प्रययौ (prayayau) - he went; ब्राह्मणर्षभः (brāhmaṇarṣabhaḥ) - the foremost brāhmaṇa; the best of brāhmaṇas;]
(Then he, the brāhmaṇa, having composed that female serpent again and again, went to that very sandbank of the river, the foremost brāhmaṇa.)
Then that brāhmaṇa, after repeatedly settling the female serpent, went to that same sandbank of the river, the foremost among brāhmaṇas. (12-345-13)
