Bhishma said.
अथ तेन नरश्रेष्ठ ब्राह्मणेन तपस्विना। निराहारेण वसता दुःखितास्ते भुजङ्गमाः ॥१२-३४६-१॥
atha tena naraśreṣṭha brāhmaṇena tapasvinā। nirāhāreṇa vasatā duḥkhitās te bhujaṅgamāḥ ॥12-346-1॥
[अथ (atha) - then; तेन (tena) - by him; नरश्रेष्ठ (naraśreṣṭha) - O best of men; ब्राह्मणेन (brāhmaṇena) - by the brāhmaṇa; तपस्विना (tapasvinā) - by the ascetic; निराहारेण (nirāhāreṇa) - by one without food; वसता (vasatā) - dwelling; दुःखिताः (duḥkhitāḥ) - distressed; ते (te) - those; भुजङ्गमाः (bhujaṅgamāḥ) - serpents;]
(Then by him, O best of men, by the brāhmaṇa, by the ascetic, by one without food, dwelling, distressed, those serpents.)
Then, O best of men, those serpents became distressed by the presence of the brāhmaṇa ascetic who was dwelling there without food. (12-346-1)
सर्वे सम्भूय सहितास्तस्य नागस्य बान्धवाः। भ्रातरस्तनया भार्या ययुस्तं ब्राह्मणं प्रति ॥१२-३४६-२॥
sarve sambhūya sahitās tasya nāgasya bāndhavāḥ। bhrātaraḥ tanayā bhāryā yayus taṃ brāhmaṇaṃ prati ॥12-346-2॥
[सर्वे (sarve) - all; सम्भूय (sambhūya) - having come together; सहिताः (sahitāḥ) - united; तस्य (tasya) - of him; नागस्य (nāgasya) - of the nāga; बान्धवाः (bāndhavāḥ) - relatives; भ्रातरः (bhrātaraḥ) - brothers; तनया (tanayā) - sons; भार्या (bhāryā) - wife; ययुः (yayuḥ) - went; तम् (tam) - to him; ब्राह्मणम् (brāhmaṇam) - the brāhmaṇa; प्रति (prati) - towards;]
(All, having come together, united, of him, of the nāga, relatives, brothers, sons, wife, went, to him, the brāhmaṇa, towards.)
All the relatives of that nāga—his brothers, sons, and wife—having come together in unity, went towards that brāhmaṇa. (12-346-2)
तेऽपश्यन्पुलिने तं वै विविक्ते नियतव्रतम्। समासीनं निराहारं द्विजं जप्यपरायणम् ॥१२-३४६-३॥
te'apaśyan puline taṃ vai vivikte niyatavratam। samāsīnaṃ nirāhāraṃ dvijaṃ japyaparāyaṇam ॥12-346-3॥
[ते (te) - they; अपश्यन् (apaśyan) - saw; पुलिने (puline) - on the sandbank; तं (tam) - him; वै (vai) - indeed; विविक्ते (vivikte) - in a secluded place; नियतव्रतम् (niyatavratam) - of fixed vow; समासीनं (samāsīnam) - seated; निराहारं (nirāhāram) - without food; द्विजं (dvijam) - twice-born (Brahmin); जप्यपरायणम् (japyaparāyaṇam) - devoted to recitation;]
(They saw him indeed on the sandbank, in a secluded place, of fixed vow, seated, without food, the twice-born, devoted to recitation.)
They saw the twice-born, devoted to recitation, seated without food on the sandbank in a secluded place, steadfast in his vow. (12-346-3)
ते सर्वे समभिक्रम्य विप्रमभ्यर्च्य चासकृत्। ऊचुर्वाक्यमसंदिग्धमातिथेयस्य बान्धवाः ॥१२-३४६-४॥
te sarve samabhikramya vipram abhyarcya ca asakṛt। ūcur vākyam asaṃdigdham ātitheyasya bāndhavāḥ ॥12-346-4॥
[ते (te) - they; सर्वे (sarve) - all; समभिक्रम्य (samabhikramya) - having approached together; विप्रम् (vipram) - the Brāhmaṇa; अभ्यर्च्य (abhyarcya) - having worshipped; च (ca) - and; असकृत् (asakṛt) - repeatedly; ऊचुः (ūcuḥ) - they said; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - speech; असंदिग्धम् (asaṃdigdham) - unambiguous; आतिथेयस्य (ātitheyasya) - of the host; बान्धवाः (bāndhavāḥ) - relatives;]
(They all, having approached together, having worshipped the Brāhmaṇa and repeatedly, the relatives of the host said unambiguous speech.)
All of them, having come together and having repeatedly worshipped the Brāhmaṇa, the relatives of the host spoke clear words. (12-346-4)
षष्ठो हि दिवसस्तेऽद्य प्राप्तस्येह तपोधन। न चाभिलषसे किञ्चिदाहारं धर्मवत्सल ॥१२-३४६-५॥
ṣaṣṭho hi divasaste'dya prāptasyeha tapodhana। na cābhilaṣase kiñcidāhāraṃ dharmavatsala ॥12-346-5॥
[षष्ठः (ṣaṣṭhaḥ) - sixth; हि (hi) - indeed; दिवसः (divasaḥ) - day; ते (te) - your; अद्य (adya) - today; प्राप्तस्य (prāptasya) - having passed; इह (iha) - here; तपोधन (tapodhana) - O ascetic; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; अभिलषसे (abhilaṣase) - you desire; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - anything; आहारम् (āhāram) - food; धर्मवत्सल (dharmavatsala) - O lover of dharma;]
(Sixth indeed day your today having passed here O ascetic, not and you desire anything food, O lover of dharma.)
O ascetic, today is the sixth day that you have spent here, and yet, O lover of dharma, you do not desire any food. (12-346-5)
अस्मानभिगतश्चासि वयं च त्वामुपस्थिताः। कार्यं चातिथ्यमस्माभिर्वयं सर्वे कुटुम्बिनः ॥१२-३४६-६॥
asmān abhigataś cāsi vayaṃ ca tvām upasthitāḥ। kāryaṃ cātithyam asmābhir vayaṃ sarve kuṭumbinaḥ ॥12-346-6॥
[अस्मान् (asmān) - us; (accusative plural of asmad) अभिगतः (abhigataḥ) - approached; (come near) च (ca) - and; असि (asi) - you are; वयम् (vayam) - we; (nominative plural of asmad) च (ca) - and; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; (accusative singular of tvad) उपस्थिताः (upasthitāḥ) - present; (standing before) कार्यं (kāryam) - duty; (to be done) च (ca) - and; आतिथ्यम् (ātithyam) - hospitality; अस्माभिः (asmābhiḥ) - by us; (instrumental plural of asmad) वयम् (vayam) - we; (nominative plural of asmad) सर्वे (sarve) - all; कुटुम्बिनः (kuṭumbinaḥ) - householders; (family men);]
(You have approached us and we are present before you; and the duty of hospitality is by us, we all householders.)
You have come to us, and we are present before you; it is our duty, as householders, to offer hospitality. (12-346-6)
मूलं फलं वा पर्णं वा पयो वा द्विजसत्तम। आहारहेतोरन्नं वा भोक्तुमर्हसि ब्राह्मण ॥१२-३४६-७॥
mūlaṃ phalaṃ vā parṇaṃ vā payo vā dvijasattama। āhārahetor annaṃ vā bhoktum arhasi brāhmaṇa ॥12-346-7॥
[मूलं (mūlam) - root; फलं (phalam) - fruit; वा (vā) - or; पर्णं (parṇam) - leaf; वा (vā) - or; पयो (payo) - milk; वा (vā) - or; द्विजसत्तम (dvijasattama) - best of twice-born; आहारहेतोः (āhārahetoḥ) - for the sake of food; अन्नं (annam) - food; वा (vā) - or; भोक्तुम् (bhoktum) - to eat; अर्हसि (arhasi) - you are worthy; ब्राह्मण (brāhmaṇa) - O Brāhmaṇa;]
(Root, fruit, or leaf, or milk, or O best of twice-born, for the sake of food, food, or to eat, you are worthy, O Brāhmaṇa.)
O Brāhmaṇa, best of the twice-born, you are worthy to eat root, fruit, leaf, milk, or food for the sake of sustenance. (12-346-7)
त्यक्ताहारेण भवता वने निवसता सता। बालवृद्धमिदं सर्वं पीड्यते धर्मसङ्कटात् ॥१२-३४६-८॥
tyaktāhāreṇa bhavatā vane nivasatā satā। bālavṛddham idaṃ sarvaṃ pīḍyate dharmasaṅkaṭāt ॥12-346-8॥
[त्यक्ताहारेण (tyaktāhāreṇa) - by one who has abandoned food; भवता (bhavatā) - by you; वने (vane) - in the forest; निवसता (nivasatā) - dwelling; सता (satā) - being (righteous); बालवृद्धम् (bālavṛddham) - the young and the old; इदं (idaṃ) - this; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; पीड्यते (pīḍyate) - is afflicted; धर्मसङ्कटात् (dharmasaṅkaṭāt) - from the distress of dharma;]
(By you, being one who has abandoned food, dwelling righteously in the forest, all this—young and old—is afflicted from the distress of dharma.)
Because you, having given up food and living righteously in the forest, all these—children and elders—are suffering due to the hardship of dharma. (12-346-8)
न हि नो भ्रूणहा कश्चिद्राजापथ्योऽनृतोऽपि वा। पूर्वाशी वा कुले ह्यस्मिन्देवतातिथिबन्धुषु ॥१२-३४६-९॥
na hi no bhrūṇahā kaścid rājāpathyo'nṛto'pi vā। pūrvāśī vā kule hy asmin devatātithibandhuṣu ॥12-346-9॥
[न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; नो (no) - of us; भ्रूणहा (bhrūṇahā) - killer of embryo; कश्चित् (kaścit) - anyone; राजापथ्यः (rājāpathyaḥ) - born of royal path (lineage); अनृतः (anṛtaḥ) - untruthful; अपि (api) - even; वा (vā) - or; पूर्वाशी (pūrvāśī) - one who has eaten before; वा (vā) - or; कुले (kule) - in the family; हि (hi) - indeed; अस्मिन् (asmin) - in this; देवता (devatā) - deity; अतिथि (atithi) - guest; बन्धुषु (bandhuṣu) - among relatives;]
(Not indeed of us killer of embryo anyone born of royal path untruthful even or; one who has eaten before or in the family indeed in this deity guest among relatives.)
Indeed, among us, there is no one who is a killer of an embryo, nor anyone born of royal lineage who is untruthful, nor anyone who has eaten before others, nor among our family, deities, guests, or relatives. (12-346-9)
ब्राह्मण उवाच॥
brāhmaṇa uvāca॥
[ब्राह्मण (brāhmaṇa) - brāhmaṇa; a Brāhmaṇa; उवाच (uvāca) - uvāca; said;]
(brāhmaṇa said;)
The brāhmaṇa said:
उपदेशेन युष्माकमाहारोऽयं मया वृतः। द्विरूनं दशरात्रं वै नागस्यागमनं प्रति ॥१२-३४६-१०॥
upadeśena yuṣmākam āhāro'yaṁ mayā vṛtaḥ। dvirūnaṁ daśarātraṁ vai nāgasya āgamanaṁ prati ॥12-346-10॥
[उपदेशेन (upadeśena) - by instruction; युष्माकम् (yuṣmākam) - your; आहारः (āhāraḥ) - food; अयम् (ayam) - this; मया (mayā) - by me; वृतः (vṛtaḥ) - restricted; द्वि (dvi) - twice; रूनम् (rūnam) - less; दशरात्रम् (daśarātram) - ten nights; वै (vai) - indeed; नागस्य (nāgasya) - of the serpent; आगमनम् (āgamanam) - arrival; प्रति (prati) - towards;]
(By instruction your food this by me restricted. Twice less than ten nights indeed of the serpent arrival towards.)
By my instruction, your food has been restricted. For eight nights, until the serpent's arrival. (12-346-10)
यद्यष्टरात्रे निर्याते नागमिष्यति पन्नगः। तदाहारं करिष्यामि तन्निमित्तमिदं व्रतम् ॥१२-३४६-११॥
yadyaṣṭarātre niryāte nāgamiṣyati pannagaḥ। tadāhāraṃ kariṣyāmi tannimittamidaṃ vratam ॥12-346-11॥
[यदि (yadi) - if; अष्ट-रात्रे (aṣṭa-rātre) - on the eighth night; निर्याते (niryāte) - having departed; नागम् (nāgam) - the serpent; इष्यति (iṣyati) - will desire; पन्नगः (pannagaḥ) - the snake; तदा (tadā) - then; आहारम् (āhāram) - food; करिष्यामि (kariṣyāmi) - I will do; तत्-निमित्तम् (tat-nimittam) - for that reason; इदं (idaṃ) - this; व्रतम् (vratam) - vow;]
(If on the eighth night, having departed, the serpent will desire the snake, then I will do food; for that reason, this vow.)
If, after eight nights have passed, the serpent desires food, then I will provide food; for this reason, I have taken this vow. (12-346-11)
कर्तव्यो न च सन्तापो गम्यतां च यथागतम्। तन्निमित्तं व्रतं मह्यं नैतद्भेत्तुमिहार्हथ ॥१२-३४६-१२॥
kartavyo na ca santāpo gamyatāṃ ca yathāgatam। tannimittaṃ vrataṃ mahyaṃ naitadbhettumihārhatha ॥12-346-12॥
[कर्तव्यो (kartavyaḥ) - to be done; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; सन्तापः (santāpaḥ) - affliction; गम्यताम् (gamyatām) - let it be gone; च (ca) - and; यथा (yathā) - as; आगतम् (āgatam) - it has come; तत् (tat) - that; निमित्तम् (nimittam) - cause; व्रतम् (vratam) - vow; महि (mahyaṃ) - to me; न (na) - not; एतत् (etat) - this; भेत्तुम् (bhettum) - to break; इह (iha) - here; अर्हथ (arhatha) - you ought;]
(To be done not and affliction; let it be gone and as it has come; that cause vow to me not this to break here you ought.)
The duty must be performed, and there should be no affliction; let it pass away as it has come. For that reason, this vow is mine; you ought not to break it here. (12-346-12)
भीष्म उवाच॥

Bhishma said.
तेन ते समनुज्ञाता ब्राह्मणेन भुजङ्गमाः। स्वमेव भवनं जग्मुरकृतार्था नरर्षभ ॥१२-३४६-१३॥
tena te samanujñātā brāhmaṇena bhujaṅgamāḥ। svameva bhavanaṃ jagmurakṛtārthā nararṣabha ॥12-346-13॥
[तेन (tena) - by him; ते (te) - they; समनुज्ञाता (samanujñātā) - having been permitted; ब्राह्मणेन (brāhmaṇena) - by the brāhmaṇa; भुजङ्गमाः (bhujaṅgamāḥ) - the serpents; स्वम् (svam) - their own; एव (eva) - indeed; भवनम् (bhavanam) - abode; जग्मुः (jagmuḥ) - went; अकृतार्थाः (akṛtārthāḥ) - unsuccessful; नरर्षभ (nararṣabha) - O bull among men;]
(By him they, having been permitted by the brāhmaṇa, the serpents, indeed went to their own abode, unsuccessful, O bull among men.)
O best of men, thus permitted by the brāhmaṇa, the serpents, unsuccessful in their purpose, went to their own abode. (12-346-13)
