कर्मणां मे समस्तानां शुभानां भरतर्षभ। फलानि महतां श्रेष्ठ प्रब्रूहि परिपृच्छतः ॥१३-७-१॥
karmaṇāṃ me samastānāṃ śubhānāṃ bharatarṣabha। phalāni mahatāṃ śreṣṭha prabrūhi paripṛcchataḥ ॥13-7-1॥

O best among the great, O bull among the Bharatas, as I am asking, declare to me the fruits of all my auspicious actions. (13-7-1)

रहस्यं यदृषीणां तु तच्छृणुष्व युधिष्ठिर। या गतिः प्राप्यते येन प्रेत्यभावे चिरेप्सिता ॥१३-७-२॥
rahasyaṃ yad ṛṣīṇāṃ tu tac chṛṇuṣva yudhiṣṭhira। yā gatiḥ prāpyate yena pretyabhāve cirepsitā ॥13-7-2॥

येन येन शरीरेण यद्यत्कर्म करोति यः। तेन तेन शरीरेण तत्तत्फलमुपाश्नुते ॥१३-७-३॥

Whoever performs whatever action with whichever body, with that very body he enjoys the corresponding fruit. (13-7-3)
यस्यां यस्यामवस्थायां यत्करोति शुभाशुभम्। तस्यां तस्यामवस्थायां भुङ्क्ते जन्मनि जन्मनि ॥१३-७-४॥
yasyāṃ yasyām avasthāyāṃ yat karoti śubhāśubham। tasyāṃ tasyām avasthāyāṃ bhuṅkte janmani janmani ॥13-7-4॥

(In whichever state, in whichever state, in the condition, whatever does, good and bad, in that, in that, in the condition, enjoys, in birth, in birth.)
Whatever good or bad actions one performs in any particular state, in that very state, in that very condition, one experiences the results in each birth. (13-7-4)
न नश्यति कृतं कर्म सदा पञ्चेन्द्रियैरिह। ते ह्यस्य साक्षिणो नित्यं षष्ठ आत्मा तथैव च ॥१३-७-५॥
na naśyati kṛtaṃ karma sadā pañcendriyair iha। te hy asya sākṣiṇo nityaṃ ṣaṣṭha ātmā tathaiva ca ॥13-7-5॥

(Not perishes done action always by the five senses here. They indeed of this witnesses always the sixth self in the same way and.)
The action performed here by the five senses never perishes. They are always witnesses of it, and the sixth, the self, is likewise so. (13-7-5)
चक्षुर्दद्यान्मनो दद्याद्वाचं दद्याच्च सूनृताम्। अनुव्रजेदुपासीत स यज्ञः पञ्चदक्षिणः ॥१३-७-६॥
cakṣur dadyān mano dadyād vācaṃ dadyāc ca sūnṛtām। anuvrajed upāsīta sa yajñaḥ pañcadakṣiṇaḥ ॥13-7-6॥

यो दद्यादपरिक्लिष्टमन्नमध्वनि वर्तते। श्रान्तायादृष्टपूर्वाय तस्य पुण्यफलं महत् ॥१३-७-७॥
yo dadyād aparikliṣṭam annam adhvani vartate। śrāntāyā dṛṣṭapūrvāya tasya puṇyaphalaṃ mahat ॥13-7-7॥

(Who should give not spoiled food on the road to the weary to one not seen before, his merit-fruit is great.)
Whoever gives unspoiled food on the road to a weary traveler whom he has not seen before, his merit is great. (13-7-7)
स्थण्डिले शयमानानां गृहाणि शयनानि च। चीरवल्कलसंवीते वासांस्याभरणानि च ॥१३-७-८॥
sthaṇḍile śayamānānāṃ gṛhāṇi śayanāni ca। cīravalkalasaṃvīte vāsāṃsyābharaṇāni ca ॥13-7-8॥

वाहनासनयानानि योगात्मनि तपोधने। अग्नीनुपशयानस्य राजपौरुषमुच्यते ॥१३-७-९॥
vāhanāsanayānāni yogātmani tapodhanē। agnīnupaśayānasya rājapauruṣamucyatē ॥13-7-9॥

रसानां प्रतिसंहारे सौभाग्यमनुगच्छति। आमिषप्रतिसंहारे पशून्पुत्रांश्च विन्दति ॥१३-७-१०॥
rasānāṃ pratisaṃhāre saubhāgyam anugacchati। āmiṣa-pratisaṃhāre paśūn putrāṃś ca vindati ॥13-7-10॥
[रसानाम् (rasānām) - of juices; (of liquids); प्रतिसंहारे (pratisaṃhāre) - in the cessation; (in the stopping); सौभाग्यम् (saubhāgyam) - good fortune; अनुगच्छति (anugacchati) - follows; (accompanies); आमिष (āmiṣa) - of meat; (of flesh); प्रतिसंहारे (pratisaṃhāre) - in the cessation; (in the stopping); पशून् (paśūn) - animals; पुत्रान् (putrān) - sons; च (ca) - and; विन्दति (vindati) - obtains; (finds);]
(When there is cessation of juices, good fortune follows. When there is cessation of meat, one obtains animals and sons. (13-7-10))

अवाक्षिरास्तु यो लम्बेदुदवासं च यो वसेत्। सततं चैकशायी यः स लभेतेप्सितां गतिम् ॥१३-७-११॥
avākṣirāstu yo lambedudavāsaṃ ca yo vaset. satataṃ caikaśāyī yaḥ sa labhetepsitāṃ gatim ॥13-7-11॥
[अवाक्षिरा (avākṣirā) - with head downwards; अस्तु (astu) - let him be; यः (yaḥ) - who; लम्बेत् (lambet) - hangs; उदवासं (udavāsaṃ) - without clothing; च (ca) - and; यः (yaḥ) - who; वसेत् (vaset) - dwells; सततम् (satatam) - always; च (ca) - and; एकशायी (ekaśāyī) - one who sleeps alone; यः (yaḥ) - who; स (sa) - he; लभेत (labheta) - obtains; इप्सिताम् (ipsitām) - desired; गतिम् (gatim) - state;]
(Let him be with head downwards who hangs, and who dwells without clothing, and who always sleeps alone, he obtains the desired state.)
He who hangs with his head downwards, who lives without clothing, and who always sleeps alone, attains the desired state. (13-7-11)
पाद्यमासनमेवाथ दीपमन्नं प्रतिश्रयम्। दद्यादतिथिपूजार्थं स यज्ञः पञ्चदक्षिणः ॥१३-७-१२॥
pādyam āsanam eva atha dīpam annaṃ pratiśrayam। dadyād atithi-pūjārthaṃ sa yajñaḥ pañca-dakṣiṇaḥ ॥13-7-12॥
[पाद्यम् (pādyam) - water for washing feet; आसनम् (āsanam) - seat; एव (eva) - indeed; अथ (atha) - then; दीपम् (dīpam) - lamp; अन्नम् (annam) - food; प्रतिश्रयम् (pratiśrayam) - shelter; दद्यात् (dadyāt) - should give; अतिथि (atithi) - guest; पूजार्थम् (pūjārtham) - for the purpose of worship; सः (saḥ) - he; यज्ञः (yajñaḥ) - sacrifice; पञ्चदक्षिणः (pañca-dakṣiṇaḥ) - having five offerings;]
(Water for washing feet, seat, indeed then lamp, food, shelter; should give for the purpose of worship of the guest; he sacrifice having five offerings. (13-7-12))
One should offer water for washing feet, a seat, a lamp, food, and shelter for the worship of a guest; such a sacrifice is said to have five offerings. (13-7-12)
वीरासनं वीरशय्यां वीरस्थानमुपासतः। अक्षयास्तस्य वै लोकाः सर्वकामगमास्तथा ॥१३-७-१३॥
vīrāsanaṃ vīraśayyāṃ vīrasthānam-upāsataḥ। akṣayās tasya vai lokāḥ sarvakāmagamās tathā ॥13-7-13॥
[वीरासनं (vīrāsanam) - hero-seat; वीरशय्यां (vīraśayyām) - hero-bed; वीरस्थानम् (vīrasthānam) - hero-place; उपासतः (upāsataḥ) - of one who worships; अक्षयाः (akṣayāḥ) - imperishable; तस्य (tasya) - of him; वै (vai) - indeed; लोकाः (lokāḥ) - worlds; सर्वकामगमाः (sarvakāmagamāḥ) - attaining all desires; तथा (tathā) - thus;]
(Hero-seat, hero-bed, hero-place of one who worships; imperishable indeed his worlds attaining all desires thus (13-7-13))
For one who worships the hero-seat, hero-bed, and hero-place, his worlds are indeed imperishable and attain all desires. (13-7-13)
धनं लभेत दानेन मौनेनाज्ञां विशां पते। उपभोगांश्च तपसा ब्रह्मचर्येण जीवितम् ॥१३-७-१४॥
dhanaṁ labheta dānena maunena ajñāṁ viśāṁ pate। upabhogāṁś ca tapasā brahmacaryeṇa jīvitam ॥13-7-14॥
[धनं (dhanaṁ) - wealth; लभेत (labheta) - should obtain; दानेन (dānena) - by giving; मौनेन (maunena) - by silence; आज्ञां (ājñāṁ) - command; विशां (viśāṁ) - of men; पते (pate) - O lord; उपभोगान् (upabhogān) - enjoyments; च (ca) - and; तपसा (tapasā) - by austerity; ब्रह्मचर्येण (brahmacaryeṇa) - by celibacy; जीवितम् (jīvitam) - life;]
(Wealth should be obtained by giving, command by silence, O lord of men; enjoyments by austerity, and life by celibacy.)
O lord of men, one should obtain wealth through giving, command through silence, enjoyments through austerity, and life through celibacy. (13-7-14)
रूपमैश्वर्यमारोग्यमहिंसाफलमश्नुते। फलमूलाशिनां राज्यं स्वर्गः पर्णाशिनां तथा ॥१३-७-१५॥
rūpamaiśvaryamārogyamahiṁsāphalamaśnute। phalamūlāśināṁ rājyaṁ svargaḥ parṇāśināṁ tathā ॥13-7-15॥
[रूपम् (rūpam) - form; ऐश्वर्यम् (aiśvaryam) - prosperity; आरोग्यम् (ārogyam) - health; अहिंसा (ahiṁsā) - non-violence; फलम् (phalam) - fruit; अश्नुते (aśnute) - attains; फलमूलाशिनां (phalamūlāśināṁ) - of those who eat fruits and roots; राज्यम् (rājyam) - kingdom; स्वर्गः (svargaḥ) - heaven; पर्णाशिनां (parṇāśināṁ) - of those who eat leaves; तथा (tathā) - likewise;]
(Form, prosperity, health, non-violence, fruit attains; of those who eat fruits and roots, kingdom; heaven, of those who eat leaves, likewise.)
One who eats fruits and roots attains form, prosperity, health, non-violence, and fruit; the kingdom belongs to those who eat fruits and roots, and heaven likewise to those who eat leaves. (13-7-15)
प्रायोपवेशनाद्राज्यं सर्वत्र सुखमुच्यते। स्वर्गं सत्येन लभते दीक्षया कुलमुत्तमम् ॥१३-७-१६॥
prāyopaveśanādrājyaṃ sarvatra sukhamucyate. svargaṃ satyena labhate dīkṣayā kulamuttamam ॥13-7-16॥
[प्रायोपवेशनात् (prāyopaveśanāt) - from fasting unto death; राज्यम् (rājyam) - kingdom; सर्वत्र (sarvatra) - everywhere; सुखम् (sukham) - happiness; उच्यते (ucyate) - is said; स्वर्गम् (svargam) - heaven; सत्येन (satyena) - by truth; लभते (labhate) - obtains; दीक्षया (dīkṣayā) - by consecration; कुलम् (kulam) - family; उत्तमम् (uttamam) - excellent;]
(From fasting unto death, kingdom everywhere happiness is said. Heaven by truth obtains, by consecration family excellent.)
It is said that from fasting unto death, one attains happiness everywhere in the kingdom. By truth, one obtains heaven; by consecration, an excellent family. (13-7-16)
गवाढ्यः शाकदीक्षायां स्वर्गगामी तृणाशनः। स्त्रियस्त्रिषवणं स्नात्वा वायुं पीत्वा क्रतुं लभेत् ॥१३-७-१७॥
gavāḍhyaḥ śākadīkṣāyāṃ svargagāmī tṛṇāśanaḥ। striyastriṣavaṇaṃ snātvā vāyuṃ pītvā kratuṃ labhet ॥13-7-17॥
[गवाढ्यः (gavāḍhyaḥ) - one who is rich in cows; शाकदीक्षायां (śākadīkṣāyām) - in the vegetable (greens) vow; स्वर्गगामी (svargagāmī) - going to heaven; तृणाशनः (tṛṇāśanaḥ) - eating grass; स्त्रियः (striyaḥ) - women; त्रिषवणं (triṣavaṇaṃ) - three times bathing; स्नात्वा (snātvā) - having bathed; वायुं (vāyuṃ) - air; पीत्वा (pītvā) - having drunk; क्रतुं (kratuṃ) - sacrifice; लभेत् (labhet) - may obtain;]
(One who is rich in cows, in the vegetable vow, going to heaven, eating grass. Women, having bathed three times, having drunk air, may obtain sacrifice. (13-7-17))
A person wealthy in cows, who undertakes the vow of eating only vegetables, goes to heaven even if subsisting on grass. Women, after bathing three times and subsisting on air, may attain the fruit of sacrifice. (13-7-17)
सलिलाशी भवेद्यश्च सदाग्निः संस्कृतो द्विजः। मरुं साधयतो राज्यं नाकपृष्ठमनाशके ॥१३-७-१८॥
salilāśī bhaved yaś ca sad-agniḥ saṃskṛto dvijaḥ। maruṃ sādhayato rājyaṃ nākapṛṣṭham anāśake ॥13-7-18॥
[सलिलाशी (salilāśī) - water-eater; भवेत् (bhavet) - should be; यः (yaḥ) - who; च (ca) - and; सदाग्निः (sad-agniḥ) - always with fire; संस्कृतः (saṃskṛtaḥ) - purified; द्विजः (dvijaḥ) - twice-born; मरुं (marum) - desert; साधयतः (sādhayataḥ) - accomplishing; राज्यं (rājyaṃ) - kingdom; नाकपृष्ठम् (nākapṛṣṭham) - heaven; अनाशके (anāśake) - imperishable;]
(Water-eater should be who and always with fire, purified twice-born; desert accomplishing kingdom, heaven imperishable.)
A twice-born who subsists on water, maintains perpetual fire, and is purified, attains a kingdom in the desert and the imperishable heaven. (13-7-18)
उपवासं च दीक्षां च अभिषेकं च पार्थिव। कृत्वा द्वादशवर्षाणि वीरस्थानाद्विशिष्यते ॥१३-७-१९॥
upavāsaṃ ca dīkṣāṃ ca abhiṣekaṃ ca pārthiva। kṛtvā dvādaśavarṣāṇi vīrasthānād viśiṣyate ॥13-7-19॥
[उपवासं (upavāsaṃ) - fasting; च (ca) - and; दीक्षां (dīkṣāṃ) - initiation; च (ca) - and; अभिषेकं (abhiṣekaṃ) - anointing; च (ca) - and; पार्थिव (pārthiva) - O king; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having performed; द्वादशवर्षाणि (dvādaśavarṣāṇi) - twelve years; वीरस्थानात् (vīrasthānāt) - from the place of heroes; विशिष्यते (viśiṣyate) - is distinguished;]
(Fasting and initiation and anointing, O king, having performed for twelve years, from the place of heroes, is distinguished.)
O king, one who has performed fasting, initiation, and anointing for twelve years becomes distinguished from the place of heroes. (13-7-19)
अधीत्य सर्ववेदान्वै सद्यो दुःखात्प्रमुच्यते। मानसं हि चरन्धर्मं स्वर्गलोकमवाप्नुयात् ॥१३-७-२०॥
adhītya sarvavedān vai sadyo duḥkhāt pramucyate। mānasaṃ hi caran dharmaṃ svargalokam avāpnuyāt ॥13-7-20॥
[अधीत्य (adhītya) - having studied; सर्ववेदान् (sarvavedān) - all Vedas; वै (vai) - indeed; सद्यः (sadyaḥ) - immediately; दुःखात् (duḥkhāt) - from suffering; प्रमुच्यते (pramucyate) - is released; मानसं (mānasaṃ) - mental; हि (hi) - indeed; चरन् (caran) - practising; धर्मं (dharmaṃ) - dharma; स्वर्गलोकम् (svargalokam) - heavenly world; अवाप्नुयात् (avāpnuyāt) - may attain;]
(Having studied all the Vedas indeed, one is immediately released from suffering. Practising dharma mentally indeed, one may attain the heavenly world.)
By studying all the Vedas, one is instantly freed from suffering. By practising dharma in the mind, one can attain the heavenly world. (13-7-20)
या दुस्त्यजा दुर्मतिभिर्या न जीर्यति जीर्यतः। योऽसौ प्राणान्तिको रोगस्तां तृष्णां त्यजतः सुखम् ॥१३-७-२१॥
yā dustyajā durmatibhir yā na jīryati jīryataḥ। yo'sau prāṇāntiko rogas tāṃ tṛṣṇāṃ tyajataḥ sukham ॥13-7-21॥
[या (yā) - which (feminine); दुस्त्यजा (dustyajā) - difficult to abandon; दुर्मतिभिः (durmatibhiḥ) - by those of evil mind; या (yā) - which (feminine); न (na) - not; जीर्यति (jīryati) - decays; जीर्यतः (jīryataḥ) - of one who decays; यः (yaḥ) - which (masculine); असौ (asau) - that; प्राणान्तिकः (prāṇāntikaḥ) - life-ending; रोगः (rogaḥ) - disease; ताम् (tām) - that (feminine accusative); तृष्णाम् (tṛṣṇām) - thirst (craving); त्यजतः (tyajataḥ) - of one who abandons; सुखम् (sukham) - happiness;]
(Which is difficult to abandon by those of evil mind, which does not decay as one decays, which is that life-ending disease—happiness is for one who abandons that thirst.)
That craving, which is hard to give up by those with wicked minds, which does not age even as the person ages, which is that fatal disease—happiness belongs to the one who abandons that thirst. (13-7-21)
यथा धेनुसहस्रेषु वत्सो विन्दति मातरम्। एवं पूर्वकृतं कर्म कर्तारमनुगच्छति ॥१३-७-२२॥
yathā dhenusahasreṣu vatso vindati mātaram। evaṃ pūrvakṛtaṃ karma kartāram anugacchati ॥13-7-22॥
[यथा (yathā) - just as; in the manner that; धेनु (dhenu) - cow; सहस्रेषु (sahasreṣu) - among thousands; वत्सः (vatsaḥ) - calf; विन्दति (vindati) - finds; मातरम् (mātaram) - mother; एवं (evaṃ) - so; in the same way; पूर्वकृतम् (pūrvakṛtam) - previously done; कर्म (karma) - action; कर्तारम् (kartāram) - doer; अनुगच्छति (anugacchati) - follows;]
(Just as among thousands of cows, the calf finds (its) mother, so previously done action follows the doer.)
Just as a calf finds its mother among thousands of cows, so too, previously performed actions follow the doer. (13-7-22)
अचोद्यमानानि यथा पुष्पाणि च फलानि च। स्वकालं नातिवर्तन्ते तथा कर्म पुराकृतम् ॥१३-७-२३॥
acodyamānāni yathā puṣpāṇi ca phalāni ca। svakālaṃ nātivartante tathā karma purākṛtam ॥13-7-23॥
[अचोद्यमानानि (acodyamānāni) - not impelled; not urged; not forced; यथा (yathā) - just as; पुष्पाणि (puṣpāṇi) - flowers; च (ca) - and; फलानि (phalāni) - fruits; च (ca) - and; स्वकालम् (svakālam) - their own time; न (na) - not; अतिवर्तन्ते (ativartante) - transgress; go beyond; तथा (tathā) - so; in the same way; कर्म (karma) - action; deed; पुराकृतम् (purākṛtam) - done formerly; previously performed;]
(Not impelled, just as flowers and fruits do not transgress their own time, so action done formerly.)
Just as flowers and fruits, without being impelled, do not go beyond their own time, so too is action performed in the past. (13-7-23)
जीर्यन्ति जीर्यतः केशा दन्ता जीर्यन्ति जीर्यतः। चक्षुःश्रोत्रे च जीर्येते तृष्णैका तु न जीर्यते ॥१३-७-२४॥
jīryanti jīryataḥ keśā dantā jīryanti jīryataḥ। cakṣuḥśrotre ca jīryete tṛṣṇaikā tu na jīryate ॥13-7-24॥
[जीर्यन्ति (jīryanti) - decay; (they) grow old; जीर्यतः (jīryataḥ) - of the one who decays; of the aging; केशा (keśā) - hairs; दन्ता (dantā) - teeth; जीर्यन्ति (jīryanti) - decay; (they) grow old; जीर्यतः (jīryataḥ) - of the one who decays; of the aging; चक्षुःश्रोत्रे (cakṣuḥśrotre) - eyes and ears; च (ca) - and; जीर्येते (jīryete) - (they) decay; (they) grow old; तृष्णा (tṛṣṇā) - desire; thirst; एक (ekā) - one; only; तु (tu) - but; न (na) - not; जीर्यते (jīryate) - (it) decays; (it) grows old;]
(The hairs of the one who decays decay; the teeth of the one who decays decay. Eyes and ears also decay; but only desire does not decay.)
The hair and teeth of the aging person decay; the eyes and ears also deteriorate, but only desire does not grow old. (13-7-24)
येन प्रीणाति पितरं तेन प्रीतः प्रजापतिः। प्रीणाति मातरं येन पृथिवी तेन पूजिता ॥ येन प्रीणात्युपाध्यायं तेन स्याद्ब्रह्म पूजितम् ॥१३-७-२५॥
yena prīṇāti pitaraṃ tena prītaḥ prajāpatiḥ। prīṇāti mātaraṃ yena pṛthivī tena pūjitā ॥ yena prīṇātyupādhyāyaṃ tena syādbrahma pūjitam ॥13-7-25॥
[येन (yena) - by whom; प्रीणाति (prīṇāti) - pleases; पितरं (pitaraṃ) - father; तेन (tena) - by him; प्रीतः (prītaḥ) - is pleased; प्रजापतिः (prajāpatiḥ) - Prajapati; प्रीणाति (prīṇāti) - pleases; मातरं (mātaraṃ) - mother; येन (yena) - by whom; पृथिवी (pṛthivī) - Earth; तेन (tena) - by him; पूजिता (pūjitā) - is worshipped; येन (yena) - by whom; प्रीणाति (prīṇāti) - pleases; उपाध्यायं (upādhyāyaṃ) - preceptor; तेन (tena) - by him; स्यात् (syāt) - may be; ब्रह्म (brahma) - Brahman; पूजितम् (pūjitam) - worshipped;]
(By whom the father is pleased, by him Prajapati is pleased. By whom the mother is pleased, by him the Earth is worshipped. By whom the preceptor is pleased, by him Brahman may be worshipped. (13-7-25))
He who pleases his father, pleases Prajapati; he who pleases his mother, worships the Earth; he who pleases his preceptor, by him Brahman is worshipped. (13-7-25)
सर्वे तस्यादृता धर्मा यस्यैते त्रय आदृताः। अनादृतास्तु यस्यैते सर्वास्तस्याफलाः क्रियाः ॥१३-७-२६॥
sarve tasyādṛtā dharmā yasyaité traya ādṛtāḥ। anādṛtāstu yasyaité sarvāstasyāphalāḥ kriyāḥ ॥13-7-26॥
[सर्वे (sarve) - all; तस्य (tasya) - of him; अदृता (adṛtā) - not respected; धर्माः (dharmāḥ) - dharmas; यस्य (yasya) - of whom; एते (ete) - these; त्रयः (trayaḥ) - three; आदृताः (ādṛtāḥ) - respected; अनादृताः (anādṛtāḥ) - not respected; तु (tu) - but; यस्य (yasya) - of whom; एते (ete) - these; सर्वाः (sarvāḥ) - all; तस्य (tasya) - of him; अफलाः (aphalāḥ) - fruitless; क्रियाः (kriyāḥ) - actions;]
(All his dharmas are not respected, of whom these three are respected. But of whom these are not respected, all his actions are fruitless.)
All the dharmas of that person who respects these three are respected; but for one who does not respect these, all his actions are fruitless. (13-7-26)

bhīṣmasya tadvacaḥ śrutvā vismitāḥ kurupuṅgavāḥ। āsanprahṛṣṭamanasaḥ prītimanto'bhavaṃstadā ॥13-7-27॥
[भीष्मस्य (bhīṣmasya) - of Bhīṣma; तत् (tat) - that; वचः (vacaḥ) - speech; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; विस्मिताः (vismitāḥ) - astonished; कुरुपुङ्गवाः (kurupuṅgavāḥ) - the foremost of the Kurus; आसन् (āsan) - were; प्रहृष्टमनसः (prahṛṣṭamanasaḥ) - with delighted minds; प्रीतिमन्तः (prītimantaḥ) - full of affection; अभवन् (abhavan) - became; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(Having heard that speech of Bhīṣma, the foremost of the Kurus were astonished; they were with delighted minds, full of affection, and became so then.)

यन्मन्त्रे भवति वृथा प्रयुज्यमाने; यत्सोमे भवति वृथाभिषूयमाणे। यच्चाग्नौ भवति वृथाभिहूयमाने; तत्सर्वं भवति वृथाभिधीयमाने ॥१३-७-२८॥
yanmantre bhavati vṛthā prayujyamāne; yatsome bhavati vṛthābhiṣūyamāṇe. yaccāgnau bhavati vṛthābhihūyamāṇe; tatsarvaṃ bhavati vṛthābhidhīyamāne ॥13-7-28॥
[यत् (yat) - which; मन्त्रे (mantre) - in the mantra; भवति (bhavati) - becomes; वृथा (vṛthā) - in vain; प्रयुज्यमाने (prayujyamāne) - when being applied; यत् (yat) - which; सोमे (some) - in Soma; भवति (bhavati) - becomes; वृथा (vṛthā) - in vain; अभिषूयमाणे (abhiṣūyamāṇe) - when being poured; यत् (yat) - which; च (ca) - and; अग्नौ (agnau) - in the fire; भवति (bhavati) - becomes; वृथा (vṛthā) - in vain; अभिहूयमाने (abhihūyamāṇe) - when being offered; तत् (tat) - that; सर्वं (sarvaṃ) - all; भवति (bhavati) - becomes; वृथा (vṛthā) - in vain; अभिधीयमाने (abhidhīyamāne) - when being spoken;]
(Which in the mantra becomes in vain when being applied; which in Soma becomes in vain when being poured. And which in the fire becomes in vain when being offered; that all becomes in vain when being spoken (as such) (13-7-28))
Whatever is rendered vain in the mantra when applied, whatever is rendered vain in Soma when poured, and whatever is rendered vain in the fire when offered—all of that becomes vain when merely spoken (13-7-28).
इत्येतदृषिणा प्रोक्तमुक्तवानस्मि यद्विभो। शुभाशुभफलप्राप्तौ किमतः श्रोतुमिच्छसि ॥१३-७-२९॥
ity etad ṛṣiṇā proktam uktavān asmi yad vibho। śubha-aśubha-phala-prāptau kim ataḥ śrotum icchasi ॥13-7-29॥
[इति (iti) - thus; एतत् (etat) - this; ऋषिणा (ṛṣiṇā) - by the sage; प्रोक्तम् (proktam) - spoken; उक्तवान् (uktavān) - I have said; अस्मि (asmi) - am; यत् (yat) - which; विभो (vibho) - O mighty one; शुभ (śubha) - auspicious; अशुभ (aśubha) - inauspicious; फल (phala) - fruit; प्राप्तौ (prāptau) - in the attainment; किम् (kim) - what; अतः (ataḥ) - from this; श्रोतुम् (śrotum) - to hear; इच्छसि (icchasi) - you desire;]
(Thus this by the sage spoken I have said which O mighty one. In the attainment of auspicious and inauspicious fruit, what from this do you desire to hear?)
Thus, O mighty one, I have spoken this as told by the sage. What more do you wish to hear regarding the attainment of auspicious and inauspicious results? (13-7-29)
