पूज्यपुरुषवर्णनम्
Description of the venerable man.
युधिष्ठिर उवाच॥
Yudhiṣṭhira said.
के पूज्याः के नमस्कार्या मानवैर्भरतर्षभ। विस्तरेण तदाचक्ष्व न हि तृप्यामि कथ्यताम् ॥१३-३२-१॥
O bull among the Bharatas, who among humans are worthy of worship and who are worthy of salutation? Please tell that in detail, for I am not yet satisfied; let it be told. (13-32-1)
भीष्म उवाच॥
Bhishma said.
अत्राप्युदाहरन्तीममितिहासं पुरातनम्। नारदस्य च संवादं वासुदेवस्य चोभयोः ॥१३-३२-२॥
Here too, they recount this ancient story: the conversation between Nārada and Vāsudeva, involving both. (13-32-2)
नारदं प्राञ्जलिं दृष्ट्वा पूजयानं द्विजर्षभान्। केशवः परिपप्रच्छ भगवन्कान्नमस्यसि ॥१३-३२-३॥
Seeing Nārada with joined palms, worshipping the foremost of the twice-born, Keśava asked, "O revered one, whom are you bowing to?" (13-32-3)
बहुमानः परः केषु भवतो यान्नमस्यसि। शक्यं चेच्छ्रोतुमिच्छामि ब्रूह्येतद्धर्मवित्तम ॥१३-३२-४॥
In whom do you have the greatest respect, to whom do you bow? If it is possible to hear, I wish to know this; please tell me, O best knower of dharma. (13-32-4)
नारद उवाच॥
Nārada said.
शृणु गोविन्द यानेतान्पूजयाम्यरिमर्दन। त्वत्तोऽन्यः कः पुमाँल्लोके श्रोतुमेतदिहार्हति ॥१३-३२-५॥
Hear, Govinda, these which I worship, O destroyer of enemies. Who else in this world besides you is worthy to hear this here? (13-32-5)
वरुणं वायुमादित्यं पर्जन्यं जातवेदसम्। स्थाणुं स्कन्दं तथा लक्ष्मीं विष्णुं ब्रह्माणमेव च ॥१३-३२-६॥
Varuṇa, Vāyu, Āditya, Parjanya, Jātavedas, Sthāṇu, Skanda, as well as Lakṣmī, Viṣṇu, and Brahmā indeed. (13-32-6)
वाचस्पतिं चन्द्रमसमपः पृथ्वीं सरस्वतीम्। सततं ये नमस्यन्ति तान्नमस्याम्यहं विभो ॥१३-३२-७॥
O Lord, I bow to those who always bow to the lord of speech, the moon, the waters, the earth, and Sarasvatī. (13-32-7)
तपोधनान्वेदविदो नित्यं वेदपरायणान्। महार्हान्वृष्णिशार्दूल सदा सम्पूजयाम्यहम् ॥१३-३२-८॥
O tiger among the Vrishni, I always worship those most worthy ones whose wealth is austerity, who are knowers of the Veda, and who are always devoted to the Veda. (13-32-8)
अभुक्त्वा देवकार्याणि कुर्वते येऽविकत्थनाः। सन्तुष्टाश्च क्षमायुक्तास्तान्नमस्याम्यहं विभो ॥१३-३२-९॥
O Lord, I bow to those who, without seeking enjoyment, perform divine duties without boasting, who are content and endowed with forgiveness. (13-32-9)
सम्यग्ददति ये चेष्टान्क्षान्ता दान्ता जितेन्द्रियाः। सस्यं धनं क्षितिं गाश्च तान्नमस्यामि यादव ॥१३-३२-१०॥
O Yadava, I bow to those who properly give their efforts, are forbearing, self-restrained, have conquered their senses, and who give grain, wealth, land, and cows. (13-32-10)
ये ते तपसि वर्तन्ते वने मूलफलाशनाः। असञ्चयाः क्रियावन्तस्तान्नमस्यामि यादव ॥१३-३२-११॥
O Yadava, I bow to those who dwell in austerity in the forest, eating roots and fruits, without accumulation, and engaged in actions. (13-32-11)
ये भृत्यभरणे सक्ताः सततं चातिथिप्रियाः। भुञ्जन्ते देवशेषाणि तान्नमस्यामि यादव ॥१३-३२-१२॥
O Yādava, I bow to those who are always engaged in maintaining their servants, fond of guests, and who partake of the remnants of offerings to the gods. (13-32-12)
ये वेदं प्राप्य दुर्धर्षा वाग्मिनो ब्रह्मवादिनः। याजनाध्यापने युक्ता नित्यं तान्पूजयाम्यहम् ॥१३-३२-१३॥
I always worship those who, having attained the Veda, are unassailable, eloquent, speakers of Brahman, and are engaged in sacrifice and teaching. (13-32-13)
प्रसन्नहृदयाश्चैव सर्वसत्त्वेषु नित्यशः। आ पृष्ठतापात्स्वाध्याये युक्तास्तान्पूजयाम्यहम् ॥१३-३२-१४॥
I honor all those whose hearts are clear, who are always among all beings, even those engaged in self-study despite the burning of the back. (13-32-14)
गुरुप्रसादे स्वाध्याये यतन्ते ये स्थिरव्रताः। शुश्रूषवोऽनसूयन्तस्तान्नमस्यामि यादव ॥१३-३२-१५॥
O Yadava, I bow to those who, by the grace of the teacher, strive in self-study, are firm in their vows, eager to serve, and free from fault-finding. (13-32-15)
सुव्रता मुनयो ये च ब्रह्मण्याः सत्यसङ्गराः। वोढारो हव्यकव्यानां तान्नमस्यामि यादव ॥१३-३२-१६॥
O Yadava, I bow to those sages of good vows, who are devoted to Brahman, steadfast in truth, and bearers of oblations and ancestral offerings. (13-32-16)
भैक्ष्यचर्यासु निरताः कृशा गुरुकुलाश्रयाः। निःसुखा निर्धना ये च तान्नमस्यामि यादव ॥१३-३२-१७॥
O Yadava, I bow to those who are engaged in mendicant practices, emaciated, residing in the teacher's household, without happiness and without wealth. (13-32-17)
निर्ममा निष्प्रतिद्वंद्वा निर्ह्रीका निष्प्रयोजनाः। अहिंसानिरता ये च ये च सत्यव्रता नराः ॥ दान्ताः शमपराश्चैव तान्नमस्यामि केशव ॥१३-३२-१८॥
O Keśava, I bow to those men who are without sense of ownership, without opposition, without shame, without motive, devoted to non-violence, truthful in vow, self-restrained, and intent on tranquility. (13-32-18)
देवतातिथिपूजायां प्रसक्ता गृहमेधिनः। कपोतवृत्तयो नित्यं तान्नमस्यामि यादव ॥१३-३२-१९॥
O Yadava, I always bow to those householders who are devoted to the worship of divinities and guests, and who conduct themselves like doves. (13-32-19)
येषां त्रिवर्गः कृत्येषु वर्तते नोपहीयते। शिष्टाचारप्रवृत्ताश्च तान्नमस्याम्यहं सदा ॥१३-३२-२०॥
I always bow to those in whom the three aims of life (dharma, artha, kāma) are present in their actions and are never diminished, and who are engaged in the conduct of the virtuous. (13-32-20)
ब्राह्मणास्त्रिषु लोकेषु ये त्रिवर्गमनुष्ठिताः। अलोलुपाः पुण्यशीलास्तान्नमस्यामि केशव ॥१३-३२-२१॥
O Keśava, I bow to those Brāhmaṇas in the three worlds who have practiced the three aims of life, are not greedy, and possess virtuous character. (13-32-21)
अब्भक्षा वायुभक्षाश्च सुधाभक्षाश्च ये सदा। व्रतैश्च विविधैर्युक्तास्तान्नमस्यामि माधव ॥१३-३२-२२॥
O Mādhava, I bow to those who subsist on water, air, or nectar, and who are always engaged in various vows. (13-32-22)
अयोनीनग्नियोनींश्च ब्रह्मयोनींस्तथैव च। सर्वभूतात्मयोनींश्च तान्नमस्याम्यहं द्विजान् ॥१३-३२-२३॥
I bow to those twice-borns who are not born from a womb, who are born from fire, who are born from Brahman, and who are born from the soul of all beings. (13-32-23)
नित्यमेतान्नमस्यामि कृष्ण लोककरानृषीन्। लोकज्येष्ठाञ्ज्ञाननिष्ठांस्तमोघ्नाँल्लोकभास्करान् ॥१३-३२-२४॥
O Kṛṣṇa, I always bow to these sages who are the creators of worlds, the elders of the world, established in knowledge, destroyers of darkness, and the suns of the world. (13-32-24)
तस्मात्त्वमपि वार्ष्णेय द्विजान्पूजय नित्यदा। पूजिताः पूजनार्हा हि सुखं दास्यन्ति तेऽनघ ॥१३-३२-२५॥
Therefore, O descendant of Vṛṣṇi, you too should always honor the twice-born. When honored, those worthy of honor will surely grant you happiness, O sinless one. (13-32-25)
अस्मिँल्लोके सदा ह्येते परत्र च सुखप्रदाः। त एते मान्यमाना वै प्रदास्यन्ति सुखं तव ॥१३-३२-२६॥
These, when honored, always grant happiness in this world and in the next; they will indeed bestow happiness upon you. (13-32-26)
ये सर्वातिथयो नित्यं गोषु च ब्राह्मणेषु च। नित्यं सत्ये च निरता दुर्गाण्यतितरन्ति ते ॥१३-३२-२७॥
Those who always honor all guests, are devoted to cows and Brāhmaṇas, and are always engaged in truth, they cross over difficulties. (13-32-27)
नित्यं शमपरा ये च तथा ये चानसूयकाः। नित्यं स्वाध्यायिनो ये च दुर्गाण्यतितरन्ति ते ॥१३-३२-२८॥
Those who are always intent on tranquility, who are likewise free from envy, who are always engaged in self-study—such people cross over all difficulties. (13-32-28)
सर्वान्देवान्नमस्यन्ति ये चैकं देवमाश्रिताः। श्रद्दधानाश्च दान्ताश्च दुर्गाण्यतितरन्ति ते ॥१३-३२-२९॥
All the gods bow to those who have taken refuge in the one God; those who are faithful and self-controlled cross over all difficulties. (13-32-29)
तथैव विप्रप्रवरान्नमस्कृत्य यतव्रतान्। भवन्ति ये दानरता दुर्गाण्यतितरन्ति ते ॥१३-३२-३०॥
Likewise, by bowing to the foremost Brāhmaṇas who are steadfast in their vows, those who delight in giving overcome all difficulties. (13-32-30)
अग्नीनाधाय विधिवत्प्रयता धारयन्ति ये। प्राप्ताः सोमाहुतिं चैव दुर्गाण्यतितरन्ति ते ॥१३-३२-३१॥
Those who, having properly established the sacrificial fires and being purified, maintain them, and who have obtained the Soma offering, they indeed cross over all difficulties. (13-32-31)
मातापित्रोर्गुरुषु च सम्यग्वर्तन्ति ये सदा। यथा त्वं वृष्णिशार्दूलेत्युक्त्वैवं विरराम सः ॥१३-३२-३२॥
Those who always behave properly towards their mother, father, and teachers, just as you do, O tiger among the Vṛṣṇis—having said this, he became silent. (13-32-32)
तस्मात्त्वमपि कौन्तेय पितृदेवद्विजातिथीन्। सम्यक्पूजय येन त्वं गतिमिष्टामवाप्स्यसि ॥१३-३२-३३॥
Therefore, O son of Kunti, you too should properly honor fathers, deities, Brahmins, and guests; by doing so, you will attain your desired goal. (13-32-33)
