विपुलस्त्वकरोत्तीव्रं तपः कृत्वा गुरोर्वचः। तपोयुक्तमथात्मानममन्यत च वीर्यवान् ॥१३-४२-१॥
vipulas tv akarot tīvraṃ tapaḥ kṛtvā guror vacaḥ। tapo-yuktam atha ātmānam amanyata ca vīryavān ॥13-42-1॥
[विपुलः (vipulaḥ) - the mighty one; त्व (tv) - indeed; अकरोत् (akarot) - performed; तीव्रं (tīvram) - intense; तपः (tapaḥ) - austerity; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having done; गुरोः (guroḥ) - of the teacher; वचः (vacaḥ) - word; तपःयुक्तम् (tapaḥ-yuktam) - endowed with austerity; अथ (atha) - then; आत्मानम् (ātmānam) - himself; अमन्यत (amanyata) - considered; च (ca) - and; वीर्यवान् (vīryavān) - powerful;]
(The mighty one indeed performed intense austerity, having done the teacher's word. Endowed with austerity, then he considered himself powerful.)
Vipula, having performed intense austerity as instructed by his teacher, then considered himself endowed with austerity and powerful. (13-42-1)
स तेन कर्मणा स्पर्धन्पृथिवीं पृथिवीपते। चचार गतभीः प्रीतो लब्धकीर्तिर्वरो नृषु ॥१३-४२-२॥
sa tena karmaṇā spardhan pṛthivīṃ pṛthivīpate| cacāra gatabhīḥ prīto labdhakīrtirvaro nṛṣu ॥13-42-2॥
[स (sa) - he; तेन (tena) - by that; कर्मणा (karmaṇā) - by action; स्पर्धन् (spardhan) - competing; पृथिवीं (pṛthivīṃ) - the earth; पृथिवीपते (pṛthivīpate) - O lord of the earth; चचार (cacāra) - he moved; गतभीः (gatabhīḥ) - having lost fear; प्रीतः (prītaḥ) - pleased; लब्धकीर्तिः (labdhakīrtiḥ) - having obtained fame; वरः (varaḥ) - excellent; नृषु (nṛṣu) - among men;]
(He, by that action, competing with the earth, O lord of the earth, moved about having lost fear, pleased, having obtained fame, excellent among men.)
O lord of the earth, by that action, he, competing with the earth, moved about among men, fearless, pleased, and having attained fame, being excellent. (13-42-2)
उभौ लोकौ जितौ चापि तथैवामन्यत प्रभुः। कर्मणा तेन कौरव्य तपसा विपुलेन च ॥१३-४२-३॥
ubhau lokau jitau cāpi tathaivāmanyata prabhuḥ। karmaṇā tena kauravya tapasā vipulena ca ॥13-42-3॥

(Both worlds conquered and also thus indeed thought the lord; by action by him, O Kauravya, by great austerity and.)
The lord thought that both worlds had been conquered by him, O Kauravya, by his actions and by great austerity. (13-42-3)
अथ काले व्यतिक्रान्ते कस्मिंश्चित्कुरुनन्दन। रुच्या भगिन्या दानं वै बभूव धनधान्यवत् ॥१३-४२-४॥
atha kāle vyatikrānte kasmiṃścit kurunandana। rucyā bhaginyā dānaṃ vai babhūva dhanadhānyavat ॥13-42-4॥
[अथ (atha) - then; काले (kāle) - in time; व्यतिक्रान्ते (vyatikrānte) - having passed; कस्मिंश्चित् (kasmiṃścit) - at some; कुरुनन्दन (kurunandana) - O joy of the Kurus; रुच्या (rucyā) - by Rucā; भगिन्या (bhaginyā) - by the sister; दानं (dānaṃ) - gift; वै (vai) - indeed; बभूव (babhūva) - became; धनधान्यवत् (dhanadhānyavat) - rich in wealth and grain;]
(Then, in time having passed, at some (point), O joy of the Kurus, by Rucā, by the sister, a gift indeed became rich in wealth and grain.)
Then, after some time had passed, O joy of the Kurus, Rucā, the sister, made a gift that was abundant in wealth and grain. (13-42-4)
एतस्मिन्नेव काले तु दिव्या काचिद्वराङ्गना। बिभ्रती परमं रूपं जगामाथ विहायसा ॥१३-४२-५॥
etasminn eva kāle tu divyā kācid varāṅganā। bibhratī paramaṃ rūpaṃ jagāmātha vihāyasā ॥13-42-5॥
[एतस्मिन् (etasmin) - in this; एव (eva) - indeed; काले (kāle) - at time; तु (tu) - but; दिव्या (divyā) - divine (feminine); काचित् (kācit) - some (feminine); वराङ्गना (varāṅganā) - excellent woman; बिभ्रती (bibhratī) - bearing; परमं (paramaṃ) - supreme; रूपं (rūpaṃ) - form; जगाम (jagāma) - went; अथ (atha) - then; विहायसा (vihāyasā) - through the sky;]
(In this indeed time but divine some excellent woman bearing supreme form went then through the sky.)
At that very moment, a certain divine and beautiful woman, possessing a supreme form, then went through the sky. (13-42-5)
तस्याः शरीरात्पुष्पाणि पतितानि महीतले। तस्याश्रमस्याविदूरे दिव्यगन्धानि भारत ॥१३-४२-६॥
tasyāḥ śarīrāt puṣpāṇi patitāni mahītale। tasyāśramasya avidūre divyagandhāni bhārata ॥13-42-6॥
[तस्याः (tasyāḥ) - of her; शरीरात् (śarīrāt) - from (her) body; पुष्पाणि (puṣpāṇi) - flowers; पतितानि (patitāni) - fallen; महीतले (mahītale) - on the earth's surface; तस्य (tasya) - of that; आश्रमस्य (āśramasya) - her hermitage; अविदूरे (avidūre) - not far; दिव्यगन्धानि (divyagandhāni) - divine fragrances; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(Of her, from (her) body, flowers fallen on the earth's surface. Of that hermitage, not far, divine fragrances, O Bhārata.)
O Bhārata, flowers had fallen from her body onto the earth, and not far from her hermitage, there were divine fragrances. (13-42-6)
तान्यगृह्णात्ततो राजन्रुचिर्नलिनलोचना। तदा निमन्त्रकस्तस्या अङ्गेभ्यः क्षिप्रमागमत् ॥१३-४२-७॥
tāny agṛhṇāt tato rājan rucir nalinalocanā. tadā nimantrakas tasyā aṅgebhyaḥ kṣipram āgamat ॥13-42-7॥
[तानि (tāni) - those (things); अगृह्णात् (agṛhṇāt) - took; (from √grah, to seize); ततः (tataḥ) - then; from that; राजन् (rājan) - O king; रुचिः (ruciḥ) - Ruci (name); नलिनलोचना (nalinalocanā) - lotus-eyed (female); तदा (tadā) - then; at that time; निमन्त्रकः (nimantrakaḥ) - inviter; summoner; तस्या (tasyā) - her; of her; अङ्गेभ्यः (aṅgebhyaḥ) - from the limbs; क्षिप्रम् (kṣipram) - quickly; आगमत् (āgamat) - came; (from ā + √gam, to come);]
(Those (things) took then, O king, Ruci, lotus-eyed (female). Then the inviter of her from the limbs quickly came. (13-42-7))
Then, O king, Ruci, the lotus-eyed lady, took those things. At that time, the inviter quickly came from her limbs. (13-42-7)
तस्या हि भगिनी तात ज्येष्ठा नाम्ना प्रभावती। भार्या चित्ररथस्याथ बभूवाङ्गेश्वरस्य वै ॥१३-४२-८॥
tasyā hi bhaginī tāta jyeṣṭhā nāmnā prabhāvatī। bhāryā citrarathasyātha babhūvāṅgeśvarasya vai ॥13-42-8॥
[तस्या (tasyā) - of her; हि (hi) - indeed; भगिनी (bhaginī) - sister; तात (tāta) - O dear one; ज्येष्ठा (jyeṣṭhā) - elder; नाम्ना (nāmnā) - by name; प्रभावती (prabhāvatī) - Prabhavati; भार्या (bhāryā) - wife; चित्ररथस्य (citrarathasya) - of Citraratha; अथ (atha) - then; बभूव (babhūva) - became; अङ्गेश्वरस्य (aṅgeśvarasya) - of the lord of Aṅga; वै (vai) - indeed;]
(Of her indeed the sister, O dear one, the elder by name Prabhavati, the wife of Citraratha then became of the lord of Aṅga indeed.)
Her elder sister, O dear one, named Prabhavati, became the wife of Citraratha, the lord of Aṅga. (13-42-8)
पिनह्य तानि पुष्पाणि केशेषु वरवर्णिनी। आमन्त्रिता ततोऽगच्छद्रुचिरङ्गपतेर्गृहान् ॥१३-४२-९॥
pinhya tāni puṣpāṇi keśeṣu varavarṇinī। āmantritā tato'gacchad ruciraṅgapater gṛhān ॥13-42-9॥
[पिनह्य (pinhya) - fasten; तानि (tāni) - those; पुष्पाणि (puṣpāṇi) - flowers; केशेषु (keśeṣu) - in (her) hair; वरवर्णिनी (varavarṇinī) - the beautiful-complexioned (woman); आमन्त्रिता (āmantritā) - having been invited; ततः (tataḥ) - then; अगच्छत् (agacchat) - she went; रुचिरङ्गपतेः (ruciraṅgapateḥ) - of the lord of the beautiful body; गृहान् (gṛhān) - to the house;]
(Fasten those flowers in (her) hair, the beautiful-complexioned (woman), having been invited, then she went to the house of the lord of the beautiful body.)
The beautiful-complexioned woman fastened those flowers in her hair, and, having been invited, then went to the house of the lord of the beautiful body. (13-42-9)
पुष्पाणि तानि दृष्ट्वाथ तदाङ्गेन्द्रवराङ्गना। भगिनीं चोदयामास पुष्पार्थे चारुलोचना ॥१३-४२-१०॥
puṣpāṇi tāni dṛṣṭvātha tadāṅgendravarāṅganā। bhaginīṃ codayāmāsa puṣpārthe cārulocanā ॥13-42-10॥
[पुष्पाणि (puṣpāṇi) - flowers; तानि (tāni) - those; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; अथ (atha) - then; तदङ्ग (tad-aṅga) - her body; इन्द्रवराङ्गना (indravarāṅganā) - Indra's best woman; भगिनीं (bhaginīm) - sister; चोदयामास (codayāmāsa) - incited; पुष्पार्थे (puṣpārthe) - for the sake of flowers; चारुलोचना (cārulocanā) - beautiful-eyed;]
(Flowers those having seen then her body Indra's best woman sister incited for the sake of flowers beautiful-eyed.)
Having seen those flowers, then the beautiful-eyed best woman of Indra's body incited her sister for the sake of the flowers. (13-42-10)
सा भर्त्रे सर्वमाचष्ट रुचिः सुरुचिरानना। भगिन्या भाषितं सर्वमृषिस्तच्चाभ्यनन्दत ॥१३-४२-११॥
sā bhartre sarvam ācaṣṭa ruciḥ surucirānanā। bhaginyā bhāṣitaṃ sarvam ṛṣis tac cābhyanandat ॥13-42-11॥
[सा (sā) - she; भर्त्रे (bhartre) - to the husband; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; आचष्ट (ācaṣṭa) - told; रुचिः (ruciḥ) - Ruci (name); सुरुचिरानना (surucirānanā) - having a beautiful face; भगिन्या (bhaginyā) - by the sister; भाषितम् (bhāṣitam) - spoken; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; ऋषिः (ṛṣiḥ) - the sage; तत् (tat) - that; च (ca) - and; अभ्यनन्दत (abhyanandat) - approved;]
(She to the husband all told Ruci having a beautiful face; by the sister spoken all the sage that and approved;)
Ruci, who had a beautiful face, told her husband everything; the sage approved all that was spoken by the sister. (13-42-11)
ततो विपुलमानाय्य देवशर्मा महातपाः। पुष्पार्थे चोदयामास गच्छ गच्छेति भारत ॥१३-४२-१२॥
tato vipulamānāyya devaśarmā mahātapāḥ। puṣpārthe codayāmāsa gaccha gaccheti bhārata ॥13-42-12॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; विपुलमानाय्य (vipulamānāyya) - to the greatly honored; देवशर्मा (devaśarmā) - Devaśarmā; महातपाः (mahātapāḥ) - great ascetic; पुष्पार्थे (puṣpārthe) - for the sake of flowers; च (ca) - and; उदयामास (codayāmāsa) - urged; गच्छ (gaccha) - go; गच्छ (gaccha) - go; इति (iti) - thus; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(Then to the greatly honored Devaśarmā, the great ascetic, for the sake of flowers, urged (him), "Go, go," thus, O Bhārata.)
Then, O Bhārata, the great ascetic Devaśarmā urged the greatly honored one for the sake of flowers, saying, "Go, go." (13-42-12)
विपुलस्तु गुरोर्वाक्यमविचार्य महातपाः। स तथेत्यब्रवीद्राजंस्तं च देशं जगाम ह ॥१३-४२-१३॥
vipulastu gurorvākyamavicārya mahātapāḥ। sa tathetyabravīdrājaṃstaṃ ca deśaṃ jagāma ha ॥13-42-13॥
[विपुलः (vipulaḥ) - vast; extensive; तु (tu) - but; however; गुरोः (guroḥ) - of the teacher; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - word; statement; अविचार्य (avicārya) - without considering; without deliberation; महातपाः (mahātapāḥ) - great ascetic; one of great austerity; सः (saḥ) - he; तथेत्य् (tathety) - thus; so; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; spoke; राजन् (rājan) - O king; तम् (tam) - that; च (ca) - and; देशम् (deśam) - place; region; जगाम (jagāma) - went; proceeded; ह (ha) - indeed; surely;]
(But the great ascetic Vipula, without considering the teacher's word, thus said, O king, and went to that place indeed.)
But Vipula, the great ascetic, without deliberating on the teacher's words, said so, O king, and indeed went to that place. (13-42-13)
यस्मिन्देशे तु तान्यासन्पतितानि नभस्तलात्। अम्लानान्यपि तत्रासन्कुसुमान्यपराण्यपि ॥१३-४२-१४॥
yasmindeśe tu tāny āsan patitāni nabhastalāt। amlānāny api tatrāsan kusumāny aparāṇy api ॥13-42-14॥
[यस्मिन् (yasmin) - in which; देशे (deśe) - region; तु (tu) - but; तानि (tāni) - those; आसन् (āsan) - were; पतितानि (patitāni) - fallen; नभस्तलात् (nabhastalāt) - from the sky; अम्लानानि (amlānāni) - unwithered; अपि (api) - also; तत्र (tatra) - there; आसन् (āsan) - were; कुसुमानि (kusumāni) - flowers; अपराणि (aparāṇi) - other; अपि (api) - also;]
(In which region but those were fallen from the sky; unwithered also there were flowers other also.)
But in that region, those that had fallen from the sky were there; and there were also unwithered flowers and other flowers as well. (13-42-14)
ततः स तानि जग्राह दिव्यानि रुचिराणि च। प्राप्तानि स्वेन तपसा दिव्यगन्धानि भारत ॥१३-४२-१५॥
tataḥ sa tāni jagrāha divyāni rucirāṇi ca। prāptāni svena tapasā divyagandhāni bhārata ॥13-42-15॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; स (sa) - he; तानि (tāni) - those; जग्राह (jagrāha) - seized; दिव्यानि (divyāni) - divine; रुचिराणि (rucirāṇi) - beautiful; च (ca) - and; प्राप्तानि (prāptāni) - obtained; स्वेन (svena) - by his own; तपसा (tapasā) - by austerity; दिव्यगन्धानि (divyagandhāni) - divine-fragranced; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(Then he seized those divine, beautiful (things) and the divine-fragranced (things) obtained by his own austerity, O Bhārata.)
Then he took those divine and beautiful objects, and the divinely fragrant ones obtained by his own austerity, O Bhārata. (13-42-15)
सम्प्राप्य तानि प्रीतात्मा गुरोर्वचनकारकः। ततो जगाम तूर्णं च चम्पां चम्पकमालिनीम् ॥१३-४२-१६॥
samprāpya tāni prītātmā guror vacanakārakaḥ। tato jagāma tūrṇaṃ ca campāṃ campakamālinīm ॥13-42-16॥
[सम्प्राप्य (samprāpya) - having obtained; तानि (tāni) - those; प्रीतात्मा (prītātmā) - with delighted mind; गुरोः (guroḥ) - of the teacher; वचनकारकः (vacanakārakaḥ) - performer of the command; ततः (tataḥ) - then; जगाम (jagāma) - he went; तूर्णम् (tūrṇam) - quickly; च (ca) - and; चम्पाम् (campām) - Campā (city); चम्पकमालिनीम् (campakamālinīm) - adorned with campaka flowers;]
(Having obtained those, with delighted mind, performer of the teacher's command, then he went quickly and to Campā, adorned with campaka flowers.)
Having obtained those things, the one with a delighted mind, who fulfilled the teacher's command, then quickly went to Campā, the city adorned with campaka flowers. (13-42-16)
स वने विजने तात ददर्श मिथुनं नृणाम्। चक्रवत्परिवर्तन्तं गृहीत्वा पाणिना करम् ॥१३-४२-१७॥
sa vane vijane tāta dadarśa mithunaṃ nṛṇām। cakravatparivartantaṃ gṛhītvā pāṇinā karam ॥13-42-17॥
[स (sa) - he; वने (vane) - in the forest; विजने (vijane) - in a solitary place; तात (tāta) - O dear one; ददर्श (dadarśa) - saw; मिथुनं (mithunaṃ) - a pair (male and female); नृणाम् (nṛṇām) - of humans; चक्रवत् (cakravat) - like a wheel; परिवर्तन्तं (parivartantam) - moving around; गृहीत्वा (gṛhītvā) - having taken; पाणिना (pāṇinā) - with the hand; करम् (karam) - the hand;]
(He in the forest in a solitary place O dear one saw a pair of humans like a wheel moving around having taken with the hand the hand.)
O dear one, he saw in the solitary forest a pair of humans, moving around like a wheel, each holding the other's hand with their own hand. (13-42-17)
तत्रैकस्तूर्णमगमत्तत्पदे परिवर्तयन्। एकस्तु न तथा राजंश्चक्रतुः कलहं ततः ॥१३-४२-१८॥
tatraikas tūrṇam agamattatpade parivartayan। ekas tu na tathā rājanścakratuḥ kalahaṃ tataḥ ॥13-42-18॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; एकः (ekaḥ) - one; तूर्णम् (tūrṇam) - quickly; अगमत् (agamat) - went; तत् (tat) - that; पदे (pade) - place; परिवर्तयन् (parivartayan) - turning around; एकः (ekaḥ) - one; तु (tu) - but; न (na) - not; तथा (tathā) - so; राजन् (rājan) - O king; चक्रतुः (cakratuḥ) - they did; कलहं (kalahaṃ) - quarrel; ततः (tataḥ) - then;]
(There one quickly went to that place, turning around; one but not so, O king; they did quarrel then.)
There, one quickly went to that place, turning around; but the other did not do so, O king, and then they quarreled. (13-42-18)
त्वं शीघ्रं गच्छसीत्येकोऽब्रवीन्नेति तथापरः। नेति नेति च तौ तात परस्परमथोचतुः ॥१३-४२-१९॥
tvaṃ śīghraṃ gacchasītyeko'bravīn neti tathāparaḥ। neti neti ca tau tāta parasparam athocatuḥ ॥13-42-19॥
[त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; शीघ्रं (śīghram) - quickly; गच्छसि (gacchasi) - you go; इति (iti) - thus; एकः (ekaḥ) - one; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; नेति (neti) - not thus; तथा (tathā) - so; अपरः (aparaḥ) - the other; नेति (neti) - not thus; नेति (neti) - not thus; च (ca) - and; तौ (tau) - those two; तात (tāta) - dear one; परस्परम् (parasparam) - each other; अथ (atha) - then; ऊचतुः (ūcatuḥ) - they both said;]
(You quickly go thus, one said; not thus, so the other; not thus, not thus, and those two, dear one, then said to each other.)
One said, "You go quickly," but the other said, "Not so." Thus, both of them, dear one, kept saying to each other, "Not so, not so." (13-42-19)
तयोर्विस्पर्धतोरेवं शपथोऽयमभूत्तदा। मनसोद्दिश्य विपुलं ततो वाक्यमथोचतुः ॥१३-४२-२०॥
tayorvispardhatorevaṃ śapatho'yamabhūttadā। manasoddiśya vipulaṃ tato vākyamathocatuḥ ॥13-42-20॥
[तयोः (tayoh) - of those two; विस्पर्धतोः (vispardhatoḥ) - of the competing; एवं (evaṃ) - thus; शपथः (śapathaḥ) - oath; अयम् (ayam) - this; अभूत् (abhūt) - arose; तदा (tadā) - then; मनसः (manasaḥ) - of the mind; उद्दिश्य (uddiśya) - having addressed; विपुलम् (vipulam) - great; ततः (tataḥ) - then; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - speech; अथ (atha) - then; ऊचुः (ūcuḥ) - they spoke;]
(Of those two competing thus, this oath arose then. Having addressed the mind greatly, then they spoke the speech.)
As those two were competing in this way, an oath was made at that time. Then, having greatly considered in their minds, they spoke these words. (13-42-20)
आवयोरनृतं प्राह यस्तस्याथ द्विजस्य वै। विपुलस्य परे लोके या गतिः सा भवेदिति ॥१३-४२-२१॥
āvayor anṛtaṃ prāha yas tasya atha dvijasya vai। vipulasya pare loke yā gatiḥ sā bhaved iti ॥13-42-21॥
[आवयोः (āvayoḥ) - of us two; अनृतं (anṛtam) - falsehood; प्राह (prāha) - has spoken; यः (yaḥ) - who; तस्य (tasya) - of him; अथ (atha) - then; द्विजस्य (dvijasya) - of the twice-born; वै (vai) - indeed; विपुलस्य (vipulasya) - of the vast; परे (pare) - in the other; लोके (loke) - world; या (yā) - which; गतिः (gatiḥ) - state; सा (sā) - that; भवेत् (bhavet) - may be; इति (iti) - thus;]
(Of us two, falsehood has spoken, who, of him, then, of the twice-born, indeed; of the vast, in the other world, which state, that may be, thus.)
Whoever among us two has spoken falsehood, then, for that twice-born, indeed, whatever state exists in the vast other world, that shall be his. (13-42-21)
एतच्छ्रुत्वा तु विपुलो विषण्णवदनोऽभवत्। एवं तीव्रतपाश्चाहं कष्टश्चायं परिग्रहः ॥१३-४२-२२॥
etacchrutvā tu vipulo viṣaṇṇavadanobhavat। evaṃ tīvra-tapāścāhaṃ kaṣṭaścāyaṃ parigrahaḥ ॥13-42-22॥
[एतत् (etat) - this; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; तु (tu) - but; विपुलः (vipulaḥ) - Vipula (proper name); विषण्णवदनः (viṣaṇṇavadanaḥ) - with a dejected face; अभवत् (abhavat) - became; एवं (evaṃ) - thus; तीव्रतपाः (tīvra-tapāḥ) - of severe austerity; च (ca) - and; अहम् (aham) - I; कष्टः (kaṣṭaḥ) - difficult; च (ca) - and; अयम् (ayam) - this; परिग्रहः (parigrahaḥ) - acceptance;]
(This having heard but Vipula with a dejected face became. Thus of severe austerity and I, difficult and this acceptance.)
But on hearing this, Vipula became downcast. Thus, I, who practice severe austerity, find this acceptance difficult. (13-42-22)
मिथुनस्यास्य किं मे स्यात्कृतं पापं यतो गतिः। अनिष्टा सर्वभूतानां कीर्तितानेन मेऽद्य वै ॥१३-४२-२३॥
mithunasyāsya kiṁ me syātkṛtaṁ pāpaṁ yato gatiḥ। aniṣṭā sarvabhūtānāṁ kīrtitānena me'dya vai ॥13-42-23॥
[मिथुनस्य (mithunasya) - of the union; अस्य (asya) - of this; किं (kiṁ) - what; मे (me) - to me; स्यात् (syāt) - would be; कृतं (kṛtaṁ) - done; पापं (pāpaṁ) - sin; यतः (yataḥ) - because; गतिः (gatiḥ) - result; अनिष्टा (aniṣṭā) - undesirable; सर्वभूतानां (sarvabhūtānāṁ) - of all beings; कीर्तिता (kīrtitā) - declared; अनेन (anena) - by this; मे (me) - to me; अद्य (adya) - today; वै (vai) - indeed;]
(Of the union, of this, what to me would be, done sin, because result; undesirable of all beings, declared by this, to me, today, indeed.)
What sin would come to me from this union, since its result has been declared by this as undesirable for all beings, to me, today, indeed. (13-42-23)
एवं सञ्चिन्तयन्नेव विपुलो राजसत्तम। अवाङ्मुखो न्यस्तशिरा दध्यौ दुष्कृतमात्मनः ॥१३-४२-२४॥
evaṃ sañcintayanneva vipulo rājasattama। avāṅmukho nyastaśirā dadhyau duṣkṛtamātmanaḥ ॥13-42-24॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; सञ्चिन्तयन् (sañcintayan) - reflecting; एव (eva) - indeed; विपुलः (vipulaḥ) - the great; राजसत्तम (rājasattama) - best among kings; अवाङ्मुखः (avāṅmukhaḥ) - with face turned down; न्यस्तशिरा (nyastaśirā) - with head bowed; दध्यौ (dadhyau) - meditated; दुष्कृतम् (duṣkṛtam) - evil deed; आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - of himself;]
(Thus reflecting indeed, the great best among kings, with face turned down, with head bowed, meditated on the evil deed of himself.)
Thus, while reflecting in this way, the great and noble king, with his face turned downward and his head bowed, meditated upon his own evil deed. (13-42-24)
ततः षडन्यान्पुरुषानक्षैः काञ्चनराजतैः। अपश्यद्दीव्यमानान्वै लोभहर्षान्वितांस्तथा ॥१३-४२-२५॥
tataḥ ṣaḍanyān puruṣān akṣaiḥ kāñcana-rājataiḥ। apaśyat dīvyamānān vai lobha-harṣānvitān tathā ॥13-42-25॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; षट् (ṣaṭ) - six; अन्यान् (anyān) - other; पुरुषान् (puruṣān) - men; अक्षैः (akṣaiḥ) - with dice; काञ्चन (kāñcana) - gold; राजतैः (rājataiḥ) - silver; अपश्यत् (apaśyat) - he saw; दीव्यमानान् (dīvyamānān) - playing; वै (vai) - indeed; लोभ (lobha) - greed; हर्ष (harṣa) - joy; अन्वितान् (anvitān) - endowed with; तथा (tathā) - thus;]
(Then six other men with dice of gold and silver he saw playing indeed, endowed with greed and joy, thus.)
Then he saw six other men playing with dice made of gold and silver, who were filled with both greed and joy. (13-42-25)
कुर्वतः शपथं तं वै यः कृतो मिथुनेन वै। विपुलं वै समुद्दिश्य तेऽपि वाक्यमथाब्रुवन् ॥१३-४२-२६॥
kurvataḥ śapathaṃ taṃ vai yaḥ kṛto mithunena vai। vipulaṃ vai samuddiśya te'pi vākyam athābruvan ॥13-42-26॥
[कुर्वतः (kurvataḥ) - of one doing; शपथं (śapatham) - oath; तं (taṃ) - that; वै (vai) - indeed; यः (yaḥ) - who; कृतः (kṛtaḥ) - done; मिथुनेन (mithunena) - by the pair; वै (vai) - indeed; विपुलं (vipulam) - great; वै (vai) - indeed; समुद्दिश्य (samuddiśya) - having indicated; ते (te) - they; अपि (api) - also; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - speech; अथ (atha) - then; अब्रुवन् (abrūvan) - they spoke;]
(Of one doing oath that indeed who done by the pair indeed great indeed having indicated they also speech then they spoke.)
Indeed, when that oath was made by the pair, having indicated the great (matter), they also then spoke these words. (13-42-26)
यो लोभमास्थायास्माकं विषमं कर्तुमुत्सहेत्। विपुलस्य परे लोके या गतिस्तामवाप्नुयात् ॥१३-४२-२७॥
yo lobham āsthāyāsmākaṃ viṣamaṃ kartum utsaheta। vipulasya pare loke yā gatistām avāpnuyāt ॥13-42-27॥
[यः (yaḥ) - who; लोभम् (lobham) - greed; आस्थाय (āsthāya) - having resorted to; अस्माकम् (asmākam) - our; विषमम् (viṣamam) - hostility; कर्तुम् (kartum) - to do; उत्सहेत् (utsahet) - would endeavor; विपुलस्य (vipulasya) - great; परे (pare) - in the other; लोके (loke) - world; या (yā) - which; गतिः (gatiḥ) - state; ताम् (tām) - that; अवाप्नुयात् (avāpnuyāt) - should attain;]
(Who, having resorted to greed, would endeavor to do hostility to us, that state which is great in the other world, may he attain that.)
Whoever, out of greed, would try to harm us, may he attain that great state which awaits in the next world. (13-42-27)
एतच्छ्रुत्वा तु विपुलो नापश्यद्धर्मसङ्करम्। जन्मप्रभृति कौरव्य कृतपूर्वमथात्मनः ॥१३-४२-२८॥
etacchrutvā tu vipulo nāpaśyaddharmasaṅkaram। janmaprabhṛti kauravya kṛtapūrvamathātmanaḥ ॥13-42-28॥
[एतत् (etat) - this; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; तु (tu) - but; विपुलः (vipulaḥ) - Vipula; न (na) - not; अपश्यत् (apaśyat) - saw; धर्मसङ्करम् (dharmasaṅkaram) - confusion of dharma; जन्मप्रभृति (janmaprabhṛti) - from birth onward; कौरव्य (kauravya) - O descendant of Kuru; कृतपूर्वम् (kṛtapūrvam) - done before; अथ (atha) - then; आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - of himself;]
(This having heard but Vipula not saw confusion of dharma; from birth onward O descendant of Kuru done before then of himself;)
But Vipula, having heard this, did not see any confusion of dharma in himself, O descendant of Kuru, since all had been done by him from birth onward. (13-42-28)
स प्रदध्यौ तदा राजन्नग्नावग्निरिवाहितः। दह्यमानेन मनसा शापं श्रुत्वा तथाविधम् ॥१३-४२-२९॥
sa pradadhyau tadā rājan-nagnāv agnir ivāhitaḥ। dahyamānena manasā śāpaṃ śrutvā tathāvidham ॥13-42-29॥
[स (sa) - he; प्रदध्यौ (pradadhyau) - pondered deeply; तदा (tadā) - then; राजन् (rājan) - O king; अग्नौ (agnau) - in fire; अग्निः (agniḥ) - fire; इव (iva) - like; आहितः (āhitaḥ) - placed; दह्यमानेन (dahyamānena) - by burning; मनसा (manasā) - with mind; शापं (śāpam) - curse; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; तथाविधम् (tathāvidham) - such; १३-४२-२९ (13-42-29) - 13-42-29;]
(He pondered deeply then, O king, like fire placed in fire, with a mind burning, having heard such a curse.)

तस्य चिन्तयतस्तात बह्व्यो दिननिशा ययुः। इदमासीन्मनसि च रुच्या रक्षणकारितम् ॥१३-४२-३०॥
tasya cintayatastāta bahvyo dinaniśā yayuḥ। idam āsīn manasi ca rucyā rakṣaṇakāritam ॥13-42-30॥
[तस्य (tasya) - of him; चिन्तयतः (cintayataḥ) - while thinking; तात (tāta) - O dear one; बह्व्यः (bahvyaḥ) - many; दिननिशाः (dinaniśāḥ) - days and nights; ययुः (yayuḥ) - passed; इदम् (idam) - this; आसीत् (āsīt) - was; मनसि (manasi) - in (his) mind; च (ca) - and; रुच्या (rucyā) - with delight; रक्षणकारितम् (rakṣaṇakāritam) - the act of protection;]
(Of him while thinking, O dear one, many days and nights passed; this was in (his) mind and with delight the act of protection.)

लक्षणं लक्षणेनैव वदनं वदनेन च। विधाय न मया चोक्तं सत्यमेतद्गुरोस्तदा ॥१३-४२-३१॥
lakṣaṇaṃ lakṣaṇenaiva vadanaṃ vadanena ca। vidhāya na mayā coktaṃ satyam etad guros tadā ॥13-42-31॥

The mark was indeed identified by the mark, and the face by the face; having arranged thus, it was not spoken by me, and this is the truth of the guru at that time. (13-42-31)
एतदात्मनि कौरव्य दुष्कृतं विपुलस्तदा। अमन्यत महाभाग तथा तच्च न संशयः ॥१३-४२-३२॥
etad-ātmani kauravya duṣkṛtaṃ vipulas-tadā। amanyata mahābhāga tathā tac ca na saṃśayaḥ ॥13-42-32॥
[एतत् (etat) - this; आत्मनि (ātmani) - in self; कौरव्य (kauravya) - O descendant of Kuru; दुष्कृतम् (duṣkṛtam) - misdeed; विपुलः (vipulaḥ) - great; तदा (tadā) - then; अमन्यत (amanyata) - considered; महाभाग (mahābhāga) - O greatly fortunate; तथा (tathā) - thus; तत् (tat) - that; च (ca) - and; न (na) - not; संशयः (saṃśayaḥ) - doubt;]
(This in self, O descendant of Kuru, misdeed great then considered, O greatly fortunate, thus that and not doubt.)
O descendant of Kuru, he then considered this great misdeed as his own; O greatly fortunate one, thus there is no doubt about that. (13-42-32)
स चम्पां नगरीमेत्य पुष्पाणि गुरवे ददौ। पूजयामास च गुरुं विधिवत्स गुरुप्रियः ॥१३-४२-३३॥
sa campāṁ nagarīmetya puṣpāṇi gurave dadau। pūjayāmāsa ca guruṁ vidhivatsa gurupriyaḥ ॥13-42-33॥
[स (sa) - he; चम्पां (campāṁ) - Campā (name of city, accusative); नगरीम् (nagarīm) - city (accusative); एत्य (etya) - having arrived; पुष्पाणि (puṣpāṇi) - flowers; गुरवे (gurave) - to the guru; ददौ (dadau) - gave; पूजयामास (pūjayāmāsa) - worshipped; च (ca) - and; गुरुं (guruṁ) - the guru (accusative); विधिवत् (vidhivat) - according to the proper method; स (sa) - he; गुरुप्रियः (gurupriyaḥ) - dear to the guru;]
(He, having arrived at the city of Campā, gave flowers to the guru. And he, dear to the guru, worshipped the guru according to the proper method. (13-42-33))
He reached the city of Campā and offered flowers to his guru. Being dear to the guru, he worshipped him in the prescribed manner. (13-42-33)
