ब्राह्मण्युवाच॥
brāhmaṇy uvāca॥

(Brāhmaṇa said;)
The Brāhmaṇa said.
नाहं गृह्णामि वस्तात दृष्टीर्नास्ति रुषान्विता। अयं तु भार्गवो नूनमूरुजः कुपितोऽद्य वः ॥१-१७०-१॥
nāhaṃ gṛhṇāmi vastāt dṛṣṭīr nāsti ruṣānvitā। ayaṃ tu bhārgavo nūnam ūrujaḥ kupito'dya vaḥ॥1-170-1॥
[न (na) - not; अहम् (aham) - I; गृह्णामि (gṛhṇāmi) - accept; वस्तात् (vastāt) - from the object; दृष्टिः (dṛṣṭiḥ) - sight; नास्ति (nāsti) - does not exist; रुषा (ruṣā) - with anger; अन्विता (anvitā) - endowed; अयम् (ayam) - this; तु (tu) - but; भार्गवः (bhārgavaḥ) - descendant of Bhṛgu; नूनम् (nūnam) - indeed; ऊरुजः (ūrujaḥ) - born from the thigh; कुपितः (kupitaḥ) - angry; अद्य (adya) - today; वः (vaḥ) - to you;]
(Not I accept from the object; sight does not exist endowed with anger. This but Bhārgava indeed born from the thigh angry today to you.)
I do not accept anything from the object; my sight is not filled with anger. But this Bhārgava, indeed born from the thigh, is angry with you today.
तेन चक्षूंषि वस्तात नूनं कोपान्महात्मना। स्मरता निहतान्बन्धूनादत्तानि न संशयः ॥१-१७०-२॥
tena cakṣūṃṣi vastāt nūnaṃ kopān mahātmanā। smaratā nihatān bandhūn ādattāni na saṃśayaḥ॥1-170-2॥
[तेन (tena) - by him; चक्षूंषि (cakṣūṃṣi) - eyes; वस्तात् (vastāt) - from the object; नूनम् (nūnam) - surely; कोपात् (kopāt) - from anger; महात्मना (mahātmanā) - by the great-souled one; स्मरता (smaratā) - while remembering; निहतान् (nihatān) - the slain; बन्धून् (bandhūn) - kinsmen; आदत्तानि (ādattāni) - were taken; न (na) - not; संशयः (saṃśayaḥ) - doubt;]
(By him, the eyes from the object surely from anger by the great-souled one, while remembering the slain kinsmen, were taken away, no doubt.)
There is no doubt that, due to anger, the great-souled one, while remembering his slain kinsmen, surely turned his eyes away from the object.
गर्भानपि यदा यूयं भृगूणां घ्नत पुत्रकाः। तदायमूरुणा गर्भो मया वर्षशतं धृतः ॥१-१७०-३॥
garbhān api yadā yūyaṃ bhṛgūṇāṃ ghnata putrakāḥ। tadā ayam ūrṇā garbhaḥ mayā varṣaśatam dhṛtaḥ॥1-170-3॥
[गर्भान् (garbhān) - embryos; अपि (api) - even; यदा (yadā) - when; यूयम् (yūyam) - you (plural); भृगूणाम् (bhṛgūṇām) - of the Bhṛgus; घ्नत (ghnata) - were killing; पुत्रकाः (putrakāḥ) - O sons; तदा (tadā) - then; अयम् (ayam) - this; ऊर्णा (ūrṇā) - wool; गर्भः (garbhaḥ) - embryo; मया (mayā) - by me; वर्षशतम् (varṣaśatam) - a hundred years; धृतः (dhṛtaḥ) - was held;]
(Even the embryos, when you, O sons, were killing of the Bhṛgus, then this embryo in wool was held by me for a hundred years.)
When you, O sons, were killing the embryos of the Bhṛgus, at that time I held this embryo in wool for a hundred years.
षडङ्गश्चाखिलो वेद इमं गर्भस्थमेव हि। विवेश भृगुवंशस्य भूयः प्रियचिकीर्षया ॥१-१७०-४॥
ṣaḍ-aṅgaś ca-akhilaḥ vedaḥ imaṃ garbhastham eva hi। viveśa bhṛgu-vaṃśasya bhūyaḥ priya-cikīrṣayā ॥1-170-4॥
[षट् (ṣaṭ) - six; अङ्गः (aṅgaḥ) - limb; च (ca) - and; अखिलः (akhilaḥ) - entire; वेदः (vedaḥ) - Veda; इमम् (imam) - this; गर्भस्थम् (garbhastham) - embryonic; एव (eva) - indeed; हि (hi) - surely; विवेश (viveśa) - entered; भृगुवंशस्य (bhṛgu-vaṃśasya) - of the lineage of Bhṛgu; भूयः (bhūyaḥ) - again; प्रियचिकीर्षया (priya-cikīrṣayā) - with the desire to do what is dear;]
(Six-limbed and entire Veda, this embryonic indeed surely entered the lineage of Bhṛgu again with the desire to do what is dear.)
The entire Veda, with its six limbs, truly entered again into the lineage of Bhṛgu in its embryonic form, out of the desire to accomplish what is dear.
सोऽयं पितृवधान्नूनं क्रोधाद्वो हन्तुमिच्छति। तेजसा यस्य दिव्येन चक्षूंषि मुषितानि वः ॥१-१७०-५॥
so'yaṃ pitṛvadhānnūnaṃ krodhādvo hantumicchati। tejasā yasya divyena cakṣūṃṣi muṣitāni vaḥ ॥1-170-5॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; अयम् (ayam) - this; पितृ-वधात् (pitṛ-vadhāt) - from (his) father's killing; नूनम् (nūnam) - surely; क्रोधात् (krodhāt) - from anger; वः (vaḥ) - you (plural); हन्तुम् (hantum) - to kill; इच्छति (icchati) - desires; तेजसा (tejasā) - by (his) energy; यस्स्य (yasya) - whose; दिव्येन (divyena) - divine; चक्षूंषि (cakṣūṃṣi) - eyes; मुषितानि (muṣitāni) - have been deprived; वः (vaḥ) - your (plural);]
(He, this (one), surely from (his) father's killing, from anger, desires to kill you; by (his) energy, whose divine eyes have been deprived (are) your (plural).)
He, because of his father's killing, surely out of anger, desires to kill you; by his energy, your divine eyes have been deprived.
तमिमं तात याचध्वमौर्वं मम सुतोत्तमम्। अयं वः प्रणिपातेन तुष्टो दृष्टीर्विमोक्ष्यति ॥१-१७०-६॥
tam imaṃ tāta yācadhvam aurvaṃ mama sutottamam। ayaṃ vaḥ praṇipātena tuṣṭaḥ dṛṣṭīḥ vimokṣyati ॥1-170-6॥
[तम् (tam) - him; इमम् (imam) - this; तात (tāta) - O dear; याचध्वम् (yācadhvam) - ask; और्वम् (aurvam) - Aurva; मम (mama) - my; सुतोत्तमम् (sutottamam) - excellent son; अयम् (ayam) - he; वः (vaḥ) - for you; प्रणिपातेन (praṇipātena) - by prostration; तुष्टः (tuṣṭaḥ) - being pleased; दृष्टीः (dṛṣṭīḥ) - sight; विमोक्ष्यति (vimokṣyati) - will grant;]
(Him, this, O dear, ask, Aurva, my excellent son. He, for you, by prostration, being pleased, sight, will grant.)
O dear ones, ask this Aurva, my excellent son. He, being pleased by your prostration, will grant you sight.
गन्धर्व उवाच॥
gandharva uvāca॥
[गन्धर्व (gandharva) - celestial musician; spirit; उवाच (uvāca) - said; spoke;]
(gandharva said;)
The gandharva said.
एवमुक्तास्ततः सर्वे राजानस्ते तमूरुजम्। ऊचुः प्रसीदेति तदा प्रसादं च चकार सः ॥१-१७०-७॥
evam-uktās tataḥ sarve rājānas te tam ūrujam। ūcuḥ prasīda iti tadā prasādaṃ ca cakāra saḥ॥1-170-7॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्ताः (uktāḥ) - having been spoken; ततः (tataḥ) - then; सर्वे (sarve) - all; राजानः (rājānaḥ) - kings; ते (te) - they; तम् (tam) - him; ऊरुजम् (ūrujam) - born from the thigh; ऊचुः (ūcuḥ) - said; प्रसीद (prasīda) - be gracious; इति (iti) - thus; तदा (tadā) - then; प्रसादम् (prasādam) - favor; च (ca) - and; चकार (cakāra) - did; सः (saḥ) - he;]
(Thus having been spoken, then all those kings said to him born from the thigh, "Be gracious." Then he did show favor.)
After these words, all the kings addressed him who was born from the thigh, saying, "Be gracious." Then he granted them his favor.
अनेनैव च विख्यातो नाम्ना लोकेषु सत्तमः। स और्व इति विप्रर्षिरूरुं भित्त्वा व्यजायत ॥१-१७०-८॥
anenaiva ca vikhyāto nāmnā lokeṣu sattamaḥ। sa aurva iti viprarṣir ūruṃ bhittvā vyajāyata ॥1-170-8॥
[अनेनैव (anenaiva) - by this very; by him alone; च (ca) - and; विख्यातः (vikhyātaḥ) - well-known; famous; नाम्ना (nāmnā) - by name; लोकेषु (lokeṣu) - in the worlds; among people; सत्तमः (sattamaḥ) - the best among beings; सः (saḥ) - he; और्व (aurva) - Aurva; (name); इति (iti) - thus; so; विप्रर्षिः (viprarṣiḥ) - the sage among Brāhmaṇas; ऊरुं (ūruṃ) - the thigh; भित्त्वा (bhittvā) - having split; having pierced; व्यजायत (vyajāyata) - was born; was produced;]
(By this very (person) and by name, he became well-known among people as the best among beings. He, the sage among Brāhmaṇas, was born splitting the thigh, thus (he is) Aurva.)
By this very person and by this name, he became famous among people as the best among beings. That sage among Brāhmaṇas was born by splitting the thigh, and thus he is called Aurva.
चक्षूंषि प्रतिलभ्याथ प्रतिजग्मुस्ततो नृपाः। भार्गवस्तु मुनिर्मेने सर्वलोकपराभवम् ॥१-१७०-९॥
cakṣūṃṣi pratilabhyātha pratijagmusta to nṛpāḥ। bhārgavastu munirmene sarvalokaparābhavam ॥1-170-9॥
[चक्षूंषि (cakṣūṃṣi) - eyes; (plural of cakṣus) प्रतिलभ्य (pratilabhya) - having regained; (from pra-√labh) अथ (atha) - then; प्रतिजग्मुः (pratijagmuh) - departed; (from prati-√gam) ततः (tataḥ) - from there; नृपाः (nṛpāḥ) - kings; (plural of nṛpa) भार्गवः (bhārgavaḥ) - Bhārgava; (descendant of Bhṛgu, i.e., Paraśurāma) तु (tu) - but; मुनिः (muniḥ) - sage; मेने (mene) - considered; (from √man) सर्वलोकपराभवम् (sarvalokaparābhavam) - the defeat of all worlds; (sarva-loka-parābhava);]
(Eyes having regained then departed from there kings. Bhārgava but sage considered the defeat of all worlds.)
Having regained their sight, the kings then departed from there. But Bhārgava, the sage, considered it the defeat of all worlds.
स चक्रे तात लोकानां विनाशाय महामनाः। सर्वेषामेव कार्त्स्न्येन मनः प्रवणमात्मनः ॥१-१७०-१०॥
sa cakre tāta lokānāṃ vināśāya mahāmanāḥ। sarveṣāmeva kārtsnyena manaḥ pravaṇamātmanaḥ ॥1-170-10॥
[स (sa) - he; चक्रे (cakre) - made; तात (tāta) - O dear; लोकानाम् (lokānām) - of the worlds; विनाशाय (vināśāya) - for destruction; महामनाः (mahāmanāḥ) - great-minded; सर्वेषाम् (sarveṣām) - of all; एव (eva) - indeed; कार्त्स्न्येन (kārtsnyena) - entirely; मनः (manaḥ) - mind; प्रवणम् (pravaṇam) - inclined; आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - of himself;]
(He, O dear, the great-minded one, made his mind entirely inclined for the destruction of all the worlds.)
O dear, he, the great-minded one, resolved with his whole mind to destroy all the worlds.
इच्छन्नपचितिं कर्तुं भृगूणां भृगुसत्तमः। सर्वलोकविनाशाय तपसा महतैधितः ॥१-१७०-११॥
icchannapacitiṃ kartuṃ bhṛgūṇāṃ bhṛgusattamaḥ। sarvalokavināśāya tapasā mahataidhitaḥ ॥1-170-11॥
[इच्छन् (icchan) - desiring; अपचितिं (apacitim) - honor; (apaciti = reverence, respect;) कर्तुं (kartuṃ) - to do; भृगूणां (bhṛgūṇām) - of the Bhṛgus; भृगुसत्तमः (bhṛgusattamaḥ) - the best among the Bhṛgus; सर्वलोकविनाशाय (sarvalokavināśāya) - for the destruction of all worlds; तपसा (tapasā) - by austerity; महत (mahat) - great; इधितः (idhitaḥ) - inflamed; (idhita = kindled, inflamed;]
(Desiring to do honor to the Bhṛgus, the best among the Bhṛgus, inflamed by great austerity, for the destruction of all worlds.)
Desiring to honor the Bhṛgus, the foremost among the Bhṛgus, he, inflamed by great austerity, sought the destruction of all worlds.
तापयामास लोकान्स सदेवासुरमानुषान्। तपसोग्रेण महता नन्दयिष्यन्पितामहान् ॥१-१७०-१२॥
tāpayāmāsa lokān sa-devāsura-mānuṣān। tapasogreṇa mahatā nandayiṣyan pitāmahān ॥1-170-12॥

ततस्तं पितरस्तात विज्ञाय भृगुसत्तमम्। पितृलोकादुपागम्य सर्व ऊचुरिदं वचः ॥१-१७०-१३॥
tatastaṃ pitarastāta vijñāya bhṛgusattamam। pitṛlokādupāgamya sarva ūcuridaṃ vacaḥ ॥1-170-13॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; तम् (tam) - him; पितरः (pitaraḥ) - the ancestors; तात (tāta) - O dear; विज्ञाय (vijñāya) - having recognized; भृगुसत्तमम् (bhṛgusattamam) - the best of the Bhṛgus; पितृलोकात् (pitṛlokāt) - from the world of ancestors; उपागम्य (upāgamya) - having approached; सर्वे (sarve) - all; ऊचुः (ūcuḥ) - said; इदं (idaṃ) - this; वचः (vacaḥ) - speech;]
(Then, having recognized him, O dear, the ancestors, having approached from the world of ancestors, all said this speech.)
Then all the ancestors, having recognized the best of the Bhṛgus, O dear, came from the world of ancestors and spoke these words.
और्व दृष्टः प्रभावस्ते तपसोग्रस्य पुत्रक। प्रसादं कुरु लोकानां नियच्छ क्रोधमात्मनः ॥१-१७०-१४॥
aurva dṛṣṭaḥ prabhāvas te tapasograsya putraka। prasādaṃ kuru lokānāṃ niyaccha krodham ātmanaḥ ॥1-170-14॥
[और्व (aurva) - descendant of Urva; दृष्टः (dṛṣṭaḥ) - has been seen; प्रभावः (prabhāvaḥ) - power; ते (te) - your; तपसः (tapasaḥ) - of austerity; उग्रस्य (ugrasya) - fierce; पुत्रक (putraka) - O son; प्रसादं (prasādam) - grace; कुरु (kuru) - show; लोकानाम् (lokānām) - of the worlds; नियच्छ (niyaccha) - restrain; क्रोधम् (krodham) - anger; आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - of yourself;]
(O Aurva, your power born of fierce austerity has been seen, O son. Show grace to the worlds; restrain the anger of yourself.)
O Aurva, your power from severe austerities is evident, O son. Please show mercy to the worlds and restrain your own anger.
नानीशैर्हि तदा तात भृगुभिर्भावितात्मभिः। वधोऽभ्युपेक्षितः सर्वैः क्षत्रियाणां विहिंसताम् ॥१-१७०-१५॥
nānīśair hi tadā tāta bhṛgubhir bhāvitātmabhiḥ। vadho'bhyupekṣitaḥ sarvaiḥ kṣatriyāṇāṃ vihiṃsatām ॥1-170-15॥
[न (na) - not; अनीशैः (anīśaiḥ) - by the powerless; हि (hi) - indeed; तदा (tadā) - then; तात (tāta) - O dear one; भृगुभिः (bhṛgubhiḥ) - by the Bhṛgus; भावितात्मभिः (bhāvitātmabhiḥ) - by those whose selves are purified; वधः (vadhaḥ) - killing; अभ्युपेक्षितः (abhyupekṣitaḥ) - was tolerated; सर्वैः (sarvaiḥ) - by all; क्षत्रियाणाम् (kṣatriyāṇām) - of the Kṣatriyas; विहिंसताम् (vihiṃsatām) - of those who were violent;]
(Not by the powerless indeed then, O dear one, by the Bhṛgus whose selves are purified, the killing was tolerated by all of the Kṣatriyas who were violent.)
O dear one, at that time, the Bhṛgus, whose minds were purified, did not tolerate the killing by the violent Kṣatriyas.
आयुषा हि प्रकृष्टेन यदा नः खेद आविशत्। तदास्माभिर्वधस्तात क्षत्रियैरीप्सितः स्वयम् ॥१-१७०-१६॥
āyuṣā hi prakṛṣṭena yadā naḥ kheda āviśat। tadāsmābhir vadhas tāt kṣatriyaiḥ īpsitaḥ svayam ॥1-170-16॥
[आयुषा (āyuṣā) - by life; हि (hi) - indeed; प्रकृष्टेन (prakṛṣṭena) - exceedingly; यदा (yadā) - when; नः (naḥ) - to us; खेदः (khedaḥ) - weariness; आविशत् (āviśat) - entered; तदा (tadā) - then; अस्माभिः (asmābhiḥ) - by us; वधः (vadhaḥ) - death; तात (tāta) - O dear; क्षत्रियैः (kṣatriyaiḥ) - by kṣatriyas; ईप्सितः (īpsitaḥ) - desired; स्वयम् (svayam) - by oneself;]
(By life indeed exceedingly when to us weariness entered, then by us, O dear, death by kṣatriyas was desired by oneself.)
O dear, when we became exceedingly weary of life, we ourselves desired to be killed by kṣatriyas.
निखातं तद्धि वै वित्तं केनचिद्भृगुवेश्मनि। वैरायैव तदा न्यस्तं क्षत्रियान्कोपयिष्णुभिः ॥ किं हि वित्तेन नः कार्यं स्वर्गेप्सूनां द्विजर्षभ ॥
nikhātaṃ taddhi vai vittaṃ kenacid bhṛguveśmani। vairāyaiva tadā nyastaṃ kṣatriyān kopayiṣṇubhiḥ॥ kiṃ hi vittena naḥ kāryaṃ svargepsūnāṃ dvijarṣabha॥
[निखातं (nikhātam) - buried; तत् (tat) - that; हि (hi) - indeed; वै (vai) - truly; वित्तं (vittam) - wealth; केनचित् (kenacit) - by someone; भृगुवेश्मनि (bhṛguveśmani) - in the house of Bhṛgu; वैराय (vairāya) - for enmity; एव (eva) - only; तदा (tadā) - then; न्यस्तं (nyastam) - placed; क्षत्रियान् (kṣatriyān) - the Kṣatriyas; कोपयिष्णुभिः (kopayiṣṇubhiḥ) - by those wishing to anger; किं (kiṃ) - what; हि (hi) - indeed; वित्तेन (vittena) - with wealth; नः (naḥ) - for us; कार्यं (kāryam) - purpose; स्वर्गेप्सूनाम् (svargepsūnām) - of those desiring heaven; द्विजर्षभ (dvijarṣabha) - O best of twice-born;]
(Buried indeed truly that wealth by someone in the house of Bhṛgu. For enmity only then placed by those wishing to anger the Kṣatriyas. What indeed with wealth for us purpose of those desiring heaven, O best of twice-born.)
That wealth was indeed buried by someone in the house of Bhṛgu. It was placed there at that time solely for the purpose of enmity, by those wishing to provoke the Kṣatriyas. O best of the twice-born, what use do we, who desire heaven, have for wealth?
यदा तु मृत्युरादातुं न नः शक्नोति सर्वशः। तदास्माभिरयं दृष्ट उपायस्तात संमतः ॥१-१७०-१८॥
yadā tu mṛtyur ādātuṃ na naḥ śaknoti sarvaśaḥ। tadā asmābhir ayaṃ dṛṣṭa upāyaḥ tāta saṃmataḥ॥1-170-18॥
[यदा (yadā) - when; तु (tu) - but; मृत्युः (mṛtyuḥ) - death; आदातुम् (ādātum) - to take away; न (na) - not; नः (naḥ) - us; शक्नोति (śaknoti) - is able; सर्वशः (sarvaśaḥ) - in every way; तदा (tadā) - then; अस्माभिः (asmābhiḥ) - by us; अयम् (ayam) - this; दृष्ट (dṛṣṭa) - seen; उपायः (upāyaḥ) - means; तात (tāta) - dear one; संमतः (saṃmataḥ) - approved;]
(When, however, death is not able to take us away in every way, then, dear one, this means seen by us is approved.)
But when death is unable to take us away in any way, then, dear one, this means that we have seen is approved by us.
आत्महा च पुमांस्तात न लोकाँल्लभते शुभान्। ततोऽस्माभिः समीक्ष्यैवं नात्मनात्मा विनाशितः ॥१-१७०-१९॥
ātmahā ca pumāṃs tāta na lokāṃ labhate śubhān। tato'smābhiḥ samīkṣyaivaṃ nātmanātmā vināśitaḥ ॥1-170-19॥
[आत्महा (ātmahā) - self-slayer; च (ca) - and; पुमान् (pumān) - man; तात (tāta) - O dear one; न (na) - not; लोकान् (lokān) - worlds; लभते (labhate) - attains; शुभान् (śubhān) - auspicious; ततः (tataḥ) - therefore; अस्माभिः (asmābhiḥ) - by us; समीक्ष्य (samīkṣya) - having considered; एवम् (evam) - thus; न (na) - not; आत्मना (ātmanā) - by oneself; आत्मा (ātmā) - self; विनाशितः (vināśitaḥ) - destroyed;]
(The self-slayer, O dear one, does not attain auspicious worlds; therefore, having thus considered, by us, the self should not be destroyed by oneself.)
O dear one, a man who kills himself does not attain auspicious worlds; therefore, we should carefully consider and not destroy ourselves by our own hand.
न चैतन्नः प्रियं तात यदिदं कर्तुमिच्छसि। नियच्छेदं मनः पापात्सर्वलोकपराभवात् ॥१-१७०-२०॥
na caitannaḥ priyaṃ tāta yadidaṃ kartumicchasi। niyacchedaṃ manaḥ pāpātsarvalokaparābhavāt ॥1-170-20॥
[न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; एतत् (etat) - this; नः (naḥ) - to us; प्रियं (priyaṃ) - dear; तात (tāta) - O father; यत् (yat) - which; इदं (idaṃ) - this; कर्तुम् (kartum) - to do; इच्छसि (icchasi) - you wish; नियच्छ (niyaccha) - restrain; एतत् (etat) - this; मनः (manaḥ) - mind; पापात् (pāpāt) - from sin; सर्वलोकपराभवात् (sarvalokaparābhavāt) - from the disgrace of all people;]
