धृष्टद्युम्नस्तु पाञ्चाल्यः पृष्ठतः कुरुनन्दनौ। अन्वगच्छत्तदा यान्तौ भार्गवस्य निवेशनम् ॥१-१८४-१॥
dhṛṣṭadyumnas tu pāñcālyaḥ pṛṣṭhataḥ kurunandanau। anvagacchat tadā yāntau bhārgavasya niveśanam ॥1-184-1॥

(Dhṛṣṭadyumna, but, the son of the Pāñcāla king, behind, the two sons of Kuru, followed, then, going, to the residence of Bhārgava.)
But Dhṛṣṭadyumna, the son of the Pāñcāla king, followed behind the two sons of Kuru as they went to the residence of Bhārgava.
सोऽज्ञायमानः पुरुषानवधाय समन्ततः। स्वयमारान्निविष्टोऽभूद्भार्गवस्य निवेशने ॥१-१८४-२॥
so'jñāyamānaḥ puruṣān avadhāya samantataḥ। svayam ārān niviṣṭo'bhūd bhārgavasya niveśane ॥1-184-2॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; अज्ञायमानः (ajñāyamānaḥ) - being unrecognized; पुरुषान् (puruṣān) - men; अवधाय (avadhāya) - having observed; समन्ततः (samantataḥ) - all around; स्वयम् (svayam) - himself; आरान् (ārān) - to the hermitage; निविष्टः (niviṣṭaḥ) - having entered; अभूत् (abhūt) - became; भार्गवस्य (bhārgavasya) - of Bhārgava; निवेशने (niveśane) - in the abode;]
(He, being unrecognized, having observed the men all around, himself entered the hermitage and became (present) in the abode of Bhārgava.)
He, remaining unrecognized, surveyed the men all around and himself entered the hermitage, arriving at the abode of Bhārgava.
सायेऽथ भीमस्तु रिपुप्रमाथी; जिष्णुर्यमौ चापि महानुभावौ। भैक्षं चरित्वा तु युधिष्ठिराय; निवेदयां चक्रुरदीनसत्त्वाः ॥१-१८४-३॥
sāye’tha bhīmas tu ripu-pramāthī; jiṣṇur yamau cāpi mahānubhāvau. bhaikṣaṃ caritvā tu yudhiṣṭhirāya; nivedayāṃ cakrur adīna-sattvāḥ ॥1-184-3॥
[साये (sāye) - in the evening; अथ (atha) - then; भीमः (bhīmaḥ) - Bhima; तु (tu) - but; रिपुप्रमाथी (ripu-pramāthī) - destroyer of enemies; जिष्णुः (jiṣṇuḥ) - the victorious one (Arjuna); यमौ (yamau) - the two sons of Yama (Nakula and Sahadeva); च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; महानुभावौ (mahānubhāvau) - great-souled ones; भैक्षं (bhaikṣam) - alms; चरित्वा (caritvā) - having collected; तु (tu) - then; युधिष्ठिराय (yudhiṣṭhirāya) - to Yudhishthira; निवेदयाम् (nivedayām) - offered; चक्रुः (cakruḥ) - they did; अदीनसत्त्वाः (adīna-sattvāḥ) - those of undepressed spirit;]
(In the evening, then Bhima, the destroyer of enemies, the victorious one (Arjuna), the two sons of Yama (Nakula and Sahadeva), and also the great-souled ones, having collected alms, then offered (them) to Yudhishthira, those of undepressed spirit did.)
In the evening, Bhima, Arjuna, Nakula, and Sahadeva—the great-souled brothers—collected alms and offered them to Yudhishthira, remaining steadfast in spirit.
ततस्तु कुन्ती द्रुपदात्मजां ता; मुवाच काले वचनं वदान्या। अतोऽग्रमादाय कुरुष्व भद्रे; बलिं च विप्राय च देहि भिक्षाम् ॥१-१८४-४॥
tatastu kuntī drupadātmajāṃ tāṃ uvāca kāle vacanaṃ vadānyā. ato'gramādāya kuruṣva bhadre baliṃ ca viprāya ca dehi bhikṣām ॥1-184-4॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; तु (tu) - but; कुन्ती (kuntī) - Kuntī; द्रुपदात्मजां (drupadātmajām) - Drupada's daughter; ताम् (tām) - her; उवाच (uvāca) - said; काले (kāle) - at the right time; वचनम् (vacanam) - word; वदान्या (vadānyā) - the generous one; अतः (ataḥ) - therefore; अग्रं (agraṃ) - the first portion; आदाय (ādāya) - having taken; कुरुष्व (kuruṣva) - do; भद्रे (bhadre) - O auspicious one; बलिम् (balim) - offering; च (ca) - and; विप्राय (viprāya) - to the Brāhmaṇa; च (ca) - and; देहि (dehi) - give; भिक्षाम् (bhikṣām) - alms;]
(Then but Kuntī to Drupada's daughter her said at the right time word the generous one. Therefore the first portion having taken do, O auspicious one, offering and to the Brāhmaṇa and give alms.)
Then Kuntī, the generous one, at the right time said these words to Drupada's daughter: "Therefore, O auspicious one, take the first portion, make the offering, and give alms to the Brāhmaṇa."
ये चान्नमिच्छन्ति ददस्व तेभ्यः; परिश्रिता ये परितो मनुष्याः। ततश्च शेषं प्रविभज्य शीघ्र; मर्धं चतुर्णां मम चात्मनश्च ॥१-१८४-५॥
ye cānnam icchanti dadasva tebhyaḥ; pariśritā ye parito manuṣyāḥ। tataś ca śeṣaṃ pravibhajya śīghra; ardhaṃ caturṇāṃ mama cātmanaś ca ॥1-184-5॥
[ये (ye) - who; च (ca) - and; अन्नम् (annam) - food; इच्छन्ति (icchanti) - desire; ददस्व (dadasva) - give; तेभ्यः (tebhyaḥ) - to them; परिश्रिता (pariśritā) - sheltered; ये (ye) - who; परितः (paritaḥ) - all around; मनुष्याः (manuṣyāḥ) - people; ततः (tataḥ) - then; च (ca) - and; शेषम् (śeṣam) - remainder; प्रविभज्य (pravibhajya) - having divided; शीघ्र (śīghra) - quickly; अर्धम् (ardham) - half; चतुर्णाम् (caturṇām) - of the four; मम (mama) - my; च (ca) - and; आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - of myself;]
(Who and food desire, give to them; sheltered who all around people. Then and remainder having divided quickly, half of the four and of myself.)
Give food to those who desire it; to those people who are sheltered all around. Then, quickly divide the remainder, half for the four and for myself.
अर्धं च भीमाय ददाहि भद्रे; य एष मत्तर्षभतुल्यरूपः। श्यामो युवा संहननोपपन्न; एषो हि वीरो बहुभुक्सदैव ॥१-१८४-६॥
ardhaṃ ca bhīmāya dadāhi bhadre; ya eṣa mattarṣabhatulyarūpaḥ। śyāmo yuvā saṃhananopapanna; eṣo hi vīro bahubhuksadaiva ॥1-184-6॥
[अर्धं (ardham) - half; च (ca) - and; भीमाय (bhīmāya) - to Bhīma; ददाहि (dadāhi) - give; भद्रे (bhadre) - O auspicious one; यः (yaḥ) - who; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; मत्तर्षभतुल्यरूपः (mattarṣabhatulyarūpaḥ) - having the form equal to an intoxicated bull; श्यामः (śyāmaḥ) - dark-complexioned; युवा (yuvā) - young; संहनन-उपपन्नः (saṃhanana-upapannaḥ) - endowed with strong build; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; हि (hi) - indeed; वीरः (vīraḥ) - hero; बहु-भुक्-सदैव (bahu-bhuk-sadaiva) - always eating much;]
(And give half to Bhīma, O auspicious one; this one who has the form equal to an intoxicated bull, dark-complexioned, young, endowed with strong build; this indeed is the hero who always eats much.)
O auspicious one, give half to Bhīma; this young, dark-complexioned hero, who is strong and always eats much, has the form of an intoxicated bull.
सा हृष्टरूपैव तु राजपुत्री; तस्या वचः साध्वविशङ्कमाना। यथावदुक्तं प्रचकार साध्वी; ते चापि सर्वेऽभ्यवजह्रुरन्नम् ॥१-१८४-७॥
sā hṛṣṭarūpaiva tu rājaputrī; tasyā vacaḥ sādhvaviśaṅkamānā. yathāvaduktaṃ pracakāra sādhvī; te cāpi sarve'bhyavajahruṛannam ॥1-184-7॥
[सा (sā) - she; हृष्टरूपा (hṛṣṭarūpā) - joyful in form; एव (eva) - indeed; तु (tu) - but; राजपुत्री (rājaputrī) - princess; तस्या (tasyā) - her; वचः (vacaḥ) - words; साध्वी (sādhvī) - virtuous woman; अविशङ्कमाना (aviśaṅkamānā) - without hesitation; यथावत् (yathāvat) - as was proper; उक्तं (uktaṃ) - spoken; प्रचकार (pracakāra) - she did; साध्वी (sādhvī) - the virtuous woman; ते (te) - they; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; सर्वे (sarve) - all; अभ्यवजह्रुः (abhyavajahruḥ) - accepted (food); अन्नम् (annam) - food;]
(She, indeed joyful in form, the princess, without hesitation, did as was properly spoken by her, the virtuous woman; and they all also accepted the food.)
The princess, joyful in appearance, without hesitation did exactly as was properly spoken; the virtuous woman acted, and all of them accepted the food.
कुशैस्तु भूमौ शयनं चकार; माद्रीसुतः सहदेवस्तरस्वी। यथात्मीयान्यजिनानि सर्वे; संस्तीर्य वीराः सुषुपुर्धरण्याम् ॥१-१८४-८॥
kuśais tu bhūmau śayanaṃ cakāra; mādrīsutaḥ sahadevas tarasvī. yathātmīyāny ajināni sarve; saṃstīrya vīrāḥ suṣupur dharaṇyām ॥1-184-8॥
[कुशैः (kuśaiḥ) - with kusa grass; तु (tu) - but; भूमौ (bhūmau) - on the ground; शयनं (śayanam) - bed; चकार (cakāra) - made; माद्रीसुतः (mādrīsutaḥ) - son of Mādrī; सहदेवः (sahadevaḥ) - Sahadeva; तरस्वी (tarasvī) - energetic; यथा (yathā) - as; आत्मीयानि (ātmīyāni) - their own; अजिनानि (ajināni) - animal skins; सर्वे (sarve) - all; संस्तीर्य (saṃstīrya) - having spread; वीराः (vīrāḥ) - heroes; सुषुपुः (suṣupuḥ) - slept; धरण्याम् (dharaṇyām) - on the earth;]
(But with kusa grass, on the ground, a bed he made; the son of Mādrī, Sahadeva, energetic. As their own animal skins, all, having spread, the heroes slept on the earth.)
But Sahadeva, the energetic son of Mādrī, made a bed on the ground with kusa grass. All the heroes spread out their own animal skins and slept on the earth.
अगस्त्यशास्तामभितो दिशं तु; शिरांसि तेषां कुरुसत्तमानाम्। कुन्ती पुरस्तात्तु बभूव तेषां; कृष्णा तिरश्चैव बभूव पत्तः ॥१-१८४-९॥
agastyaśāstām abhito diśaṃ tu; śirāṃsi teṣāṃ kurusattamānām. kuntī purastāt tu babhūva teṣām; kṛṣṇā tiraś caiva babhūva pattaḥ ॥1-184-9॥
[अगस्त्यशास्ताम् (agastyaśāstām) - of Agastya’s seat; अभितः (abhitaḥ) - on both sides; दिशम् (diśam) - direction; तु (tu) - but; शिरांसि (śirāṃsi) - heads; तेषाम् (teṣām) - of them; कुरुसत्तमानाम् (kurusattamānām) - of the best of Kurus; कुन्ती (kuntī) - Kuntī; पुरस्तात् (purastāt) - in front; तु (tu) - but; बभूव (babhūva) - became; तेषाम् (teṣām) - of them; कृष्णा (kṛṣṇā) - Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī); तिरश्च (tiraś ca) - on the side and; एव (eva) - indeed; बभूव (babhūva) - became; पत्तः (pattaḥ) - fallen;]
(Of Agastya’s seat, on both sides the direction but; the heads of them, of the best of Kurus. Kuntī in front but became of them; Kṛṣṇā on the side indeed became fallen.)
Around Agastya’s seat, in all directions, the heads of the best of the Kurus were placed. Kuntī stood in front of them, and Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī) was fallen to the side.
अशेत भूमौ सह पाण्डुपुत्रैः; पादोपधानेव कृता कुशेषु। न तत्र दुःखं च बभूव तस्या; न चावमेने कुरुपुङ्गवांस्तान् ॥१-१८४-१०॥
aśeta bhūmau saha pāṇḍu-putraiḥ; pādopadhāna-iva kṛtā kuśeṣu. na tatra duḥkhaṃ ca babhūva tasyā; na ca avamene kuru-puṅgavān tān ॥1-184-10॥
[अशेत (aśeta) - lay down; भूमौ (bhūmau) - on the ground; सह (saha) - together with; पाण्डुपुत्रैः (pāṇḍu-putraiḥ) - with the sons of Pāṇḍu; पादोपधानेव (pādopadhāna-iva) - like a foot-rest; कृता (kṛtā) - made; कुशेषु (kuśeṣu) - on the kuśa grass; न (na) - not; तत्र (tatra) - there; दुःखं (duḥkham) - pain; च (ca) - and; बभूव (babhūva) - was; तस्या (tasyā) - for her; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; अवमेने (avamene) - despised; कुरुपुङ्गवांस्तान् (kuru-puṅgavān tān) - those foremost of the Kurus;]
(She lay on the ground together with the sons of Pāṇḍu, having made the kuśa grass like a foot-rest. There was no pain for her, and she did not despise those foremost of the Kurus.)
She lay on the ground with the sons of Pāṇḍu, using kuśa grass as a foot-rest. She felt no pain there, nor did she look down upon those foremost among the Kurus.
ते तत्र शूराः कथयां बभूवुः; कथा विचित्राः पृतनाधिकाराः। अस्त्राणि दिव्यानि रथांश्च नागा; न्खड्गान्गदाश्चापि परश्वधांश्च ॥१-१८४-११॥
te tatra śūrāḥ kathayāṃ babhūvuḥ; kathā vicitrāḥ pṛtanādhikārāḥ। astrāṇi divyāni rathāṃś ca nāgā; khaḍgāṅgadāś cāpi paraśvadhāṃś ca ॥1-184-11॥

(They there heroes in narration became; stories varied commanders of armies; weapons divine chariots and elephants; swords maces and also battle-axes and.)
There, those heroes began to narrate; the stories were varied, about the commanders of armies; about divine weapons, chariots and elephants; swords, maces, and also battle-axes.
तेषां कथास्ताः परिकीर्त्यमानाः; पाञ्चालराजस्य सुतस्तदानीम्। शुश्राव कृष्णां च तथा निषण्णां; ते चापि सर्वे ददृशुर्मनुष्याः ॥१-१८४-१२॥
teṣāṃ kathāstāḥ parikīrtyamānāḥ; pāñcālarājasya sutastadānīm। śuśrāva kṛṣṇāṃ ca tathā niṣaṇṇāṃ; te cāpi sarve dadṛśurmanuṣyāḥ ॥1-184-12॥

(Of them, those stories being recited; the son of the king of the Pāñcālas at that time heard Kṛṣṇā also seated; they also all men saw.)
As those stories were being recited, the son of the king of the Pāñcālas at that time heard Kṛṣṇā, who was also seated there; and all those men saw as well.
धृष्टद्युम्नो राजपुत्रस्तु सर्वं; वृत्तं तेषां कथितं चैव रात्रौ। सर्वं राज्ञे द्रुपदायाखिलेन; निवेदयिष्यंस्त्वरितो जगाम ॥१-१८४-१३॥
dhṛṣṭadyumno rājaputrastu sarvaṃ; vṛttaṃ teṣāṃ kathitaṃ caiva rātrau। sarvaṃ rājñe drupadāyākhilena; nivedayiṣyaṃstvarito jagāma ॥1-184-13॥

(Dhṛṣṭadyumna, the prince, but all the event of them told and indeed at night. All to the king Drupada entirely, intending to report, quickly went.)
Dhṛṣṭadyumna, the prince, after hearing all that had happened to them narrated at night, quickly went to King Drupada to report everything in full.
पाञ्चालराजस्तु विषण्णरूप; स्तान्पाण्डवानप्रतिविन्दमानः। धृष्टद्युम्नं पर्यपृच्छन्महात्मा; क्व सा गता केन नीता च कृष्णा ॥१-१८४-१४॥
pāñcālarājas tu viṣaṇṇarūpaḥ stān pāṇḍavān aprativindamānaḥ dhṛṣṭadyumnaṃ paryapṛcchan mahātmā kva sā gatā kena nītā ca kṛṣṇā ॥1-184-14॥
[पाञ्चालराजः (pāñcālarājaḥ) - the king of the Pāñcālas; तु (tu) - but; विषण्णरूपः (viṣaṇṇarūpaḥ) - having a dejected appearance; स्तान् (stān) - those; पाण्डवान् (pāṇḍavān) - the Pāṇḍavas; अप्रतिविन्दमानः (aprativindamānaḥ) - not finding (them); धृष्टद्युम्नम् (dhṛṣṭadyumnam) - Dhṛṣṭadyumna; पर्यपृच्छत् (paryapṛcchat) - asked around; महात्मा (mahātmā) - the great-souled one; क्व (kva) - where; सा (sā) - she; गता (gatā) - has gone; केन (kena) - by whom; नीता (nītā) - led; च (ca) - and; कृष्णा (kṛṣṇā) - Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī);]
(But the king of the Pāñcālas, having a dejected appearance, not finding those Pāṇḍavas, asked the great-souled Dhṛṣṭadyumna: "Where has she gone, by whom has Kṛṣṇā been led away?")
But the king of the Pāñcālas, looking dejected and unable to find the Pāṇḍavas, asked the noble Dhṛṣṭadyumna: "Where has Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī) gone, and by whom has she been taken away?"
कच्चिन्न शूद्रेण न हीनजेन; वैश्येन वा करदेनोपपन्ना। कच्चित्पदं मूर्ध्नि न मे निदिग्धं; कच्चिन्माला पतिता न श्मशाने ॥१-१८४-१५॥
kaccinna śūdreṇa na hīnajena; vaiśyena vā karadenopapannā। kaccitpadaṃ mūrdhni na me nidigdhaṃ; kaccinmālā patitā na śmaśāne ॥1-184-15॥
[कच्चित् (kaccit) - whether; न (na) - not; शूद्रेण (śūdreṇa) - by a Śūdra; हीनजेन (hīnajena) - by one of low birth; वा (vā) - or; वैश्येन (vaiśyena) - by a Vaiśya; करदेन (karadena) - by a tax-payer; उपपन्ना (upapannā) - obtained; कच्चित् (kaccit) - whether; पदं (padaṃ) - foot; मूर्ध्नि (mūrdhni) - on the head; न (na) - not; मे (me) - my; निदिग्धं (nidigdhaṃ) - touched; कच्चित् (kaccit) - whether; माला (mālā) - garland; पतिता (patitā) - fallen; न (na) - not; श्मशाने (śmaśāne) - in the cremation ground;]
(Whether not by a Śūdra, not by one of low birth, or by a Vaiśya, or by a tax-payer obtained; whether the foot on the head of mine has not been touched; whether the garland has not fallen in the cremation ground.)
Has it not happened that a Śūdra, one of low birth, a Vaiśya, or a tax-payer has approached? Has my head not been touched by a foot? Has the garland not fallen in the cremation ground?
कच्चित्सवर्णप्रवरो मनुष्य; उद्रिक्तवर्णोऽप्युत वेह कच्चित्। कच्चिन्न वामो मम मूर्ध्नि पादः; कृष्णाभिमर्शेन कृतोऽद्य पुत्र ॥१-१८४-१६॥
kaccitsavarṇapravaro manuṣya; udriktavarṇo'pyuta veha kaccit. kaccinna vāmo mama mūrdhni pādaḥ; kṛṣṇābhimarśena kṛto'dya putra ॥1-184-16॥

O son, is the best among men of the same caste, or even one of higher caste, present here? Has my left foot today been touched on the head by Kṛṣṇa?
कच्चिच्च यक्ष्ये परमप्रतीतः; संयुज्य पार्थेन नरर्षभेण। ब्रवीहि तत्त्वेन महानुभावः; कोऽसौ विजेता दुहितुर्ममाद्य ॥१-१८४-१७॥
kaccicca yakṣye paramapratītaḥ; saṃyujya pārthena nararṣabheṇa. bravīhi tattvena mahānubhāvaḥ; ko'sau vijetā duhiturmamādya ॥1-184-17॥

(Whether indeed I shall sacrifice with supreme confidence, having united with Pārtha, the bull among men; tell truly, O great-souled one, who is he, the conqueror of my daughter today.)
Will I be able to perform the sacrifice with full confidence, having joined with Arjuna, the foremost among men? Tell me truly, O noble one, who today will be the victor of my daughter?
विचित्रवीर्यस्य तु कच्चिदद्य; कुरुप्रवीरस्य धरन्ति पुत्राः। कच्चित्तु पार्थेन यवीयसाद्य; धनुर्गृहीतं निहतं च लक्ष्यम् ॥१-१८४-१८॥
vicitravīryasya tu kaccidadya; kurupravīrasya dharanti putrāḥ. kaccittu pārthena yavīyasādya; dhanurgṛhītaṃ nihataṃ ca lakṣyam ॥1-184-18॥

(Of Vicitravīrya but whether today; of the mighty Kuru bear the sons. Whether but by Pārtha, by the younger today; the bow taken, struck and the target.)
Are the sons of Vicitravīrya, the mighty Kuru, still bearing up today? And today, has the younger Pārtha (Arjuna) taken up the bow and struck the target?
