Core-Pancharatra: Karna advises Dhritarastra to fight Pandavas militarily.
कर्ण उवाच॥
Karna said.
दुर्योधन तव प्रज्ञा न सम्यगिति मे मतिः। न ह्युपायेन ते शक्याः पाण्डवाः कुरुनन्दन ॥१-१९४-१॥
Duryodhana, I believe your judgment is not correct. O delight of the Kurus, the Pāṇḍavas cannot be overcome by your strategies.
पूर्वमेव हि ते सूक्ष्मैरुपायैर्यतितास्त्वया। निग्रहीतुं यदा वीर शकिता न तदा त्वया ॥१-१९४-२॥
Indeed, previously you made efforts with subtle means; O hero, when you were not able to restrain (them), then also it was by you.
इहैव वर्तमानास्ते समीपे तव पार्थिव। अजातपक्षाः शिशवः शकिता नैव बाधितुम् ॥१-१९४-३॥
O king, those not-yet-fledged children, being right here near you, are truly unable to cause any harm.
जातपक्षा विदेशस्था विवृद्धाः सर्वशोऽद्य ते। नोपायसाध्याः कौन्तेया ममैषा मतिरच्युत ॥१-१९४-४॥
O infallible one, my opinion is that those who have grown wings and are now in a foreign land, having fully matured, are today not attainable by any means, O son of Kunti.
न च ते व्यसनैर्योक्तुं शक्या दिष्टकृता हि ते। शङ्किताश्चेप्सवश्चैव पितृपैतामहं पदम् ॥१-१९४-५॥
And those people, whose actions are determined by fate, cannot be subdued by calamities. Indeed, they are both suspicious and desirous of the ancestral position.
परस्परेण भेदश्च नाधातुं तेषु शक्यते। एकस्यां ये रताः पत्न्यां न भिद्यन्ते परस्परम् ॥१-१९४-६॥
Mutual division cannot be established among them; those who are devoted to one wife are not divided from each other.
न चापि कृष्णा शक्येत तेभ्यो भेदयितुं परैः। परिद्यूनान्वृतवती किमुताद्य मृजावतः ॥१-१९४-७॥
Not even Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī) could be separated from them by others; she has chosen those who are greatly distressed—what can be said now of those who are pure?
ईप्सितश्च गुणः स्त्रीणामेकस्या बहुभर्तृता। तं च प्राप्तवती कृष्णा न सा भेदयितुं सुखम् ॥१-१९४-८॥
The most desired quality among women is, for one, to have many husbands. Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī) has attained that, but she does not find it easy to divide herself among them.
आर्यवृत्तश्च पाञ्चाल्यो न स राजा धनप्रियः। न सन्त्यक्ष्यति कौन्तेयान्राज्यदानैरपि ध्रुवम् ॥१-१९४-९॥
The king, who is of noble conduct and the son of the Panchala, is not one who loves wealth. He will surely not abandon the sons of Kunti, not even for the sake of gifts of the kingdom.
तथास्य पुत्रो गुणवाननुरक्तश्च पाण्डवान्। तस्मान्नोपायसाध्यांस्तानहं मन्ये कथञ्चन ॥१-१९४-१०॥
Thus, his son is virtuous and devoted to the Pāṇḍavas; therefore, I do not think they can be overcome by any means whatsoever.
इदं त्वद्य क्षमं कर्तुमस्माकं पुरुषर्षभ। यावन्न कृतमूलास्ते पाण्डवेया विशां पते ॥ तावत्प्रहरणीयास्ते रोचतां तव विक्रमः ॥१-१९४-११॥
O bull among men, today it is proper for us to act thus by you; as long as those sons of Pandu are not rooted out, O lord of men, let your valour be shown in attacking them as long as it pleases you.
अस्मत्पक्षो महान्यावद्यावत्पाञ्चालको लघुः। तावत्प्रहरणं तेषां क्रियतां मा विचारय ॥१-१९४-१२॥
Our side is strong as long as the Pāñcāla side remains weak; therefore, strike them accordingly without hesitation or second thought.
वाहनानि प्रभूतानि मित्राणि बहुलानि च। यावन्न तेषां गान्धारे तावदेवाशु विक्रम ॥१-१९४-१३॥
There are abundant vehicles and numerous friends; as long as they are not in Gandhara, quickly advance.
यावच्च राजा पाञ्चाल्यो नोद्यमे कुरुते मनः। सह पुत्रैर्महावीर्यैस्तावदेवाशु विक्रम ॥१-१९४-१४॥
As long as the king, the son of Pāñcālī, does not resolve to act with his mighty sons, you may quickly advance.
यावन्नायाति वार्ष्णेयः कर्षन्यादववाहिनीम्। राज्यार्थे पाण्डवेयानां तावदेवाशु विक्रम ॥१-१९४-१५॥
Until Kṛṣṇa arrives with the Yādava army, act swiftly and valiantly for the sake of the Pāṇḍavas' kingdom.
वसूनि विविधान्भोगान्राज्यमेव च केवलम्। नात्याज्यमस्ति कृष्णस्य पाण्डवार्थे महीपते ॥१-१९४-१६॥
O king, for the sake of the Pāṇḍavas, Kṛṣṇa would not abandon wealth, various enjoyments, or even the kingdom itself.
विक्रमेण मही प्राप्ता भरतेन महात्मना। विक्रमेण च लोकांस्त्रीञ्जितवान्पाकशासनः ॥१-१९४-१७॥
Bharata, the great-souled, gained the earth by his valor. Likewise, Indra, the lord of Pāka, conquered the three worlds by his prowess.
विक्रमं च प्रशंसन्ति क्षत्रियस्य विशां पते। स्वको हि धर्मः शूराणां विक्रमः पार्थिवर्षभ ॥१-१९४-१८॥
O best of kings, valour is praised as the true duty of a kṣatriya. For the brave, their own duty is indeed valour.
ते बलेन वयं राजन्महता चतुरङ्गिणा। प्रमथ्य द्रुपदं शीघ्रमानयामेह पाण्डवान् ॥१-१९४-१९॥
O king, let us, with a great fourfold army, overpower Drupada by force and quickly bring the Pāṇḍavas here.
न हि साम्ना न दानेन न भेदेन च पाण्डवाः। शक्याः साधयितुं तस्माद्विक्रमेणैव ताञ्जहि ॥१-१९४-२०॥
The Pāṇḍavas cannot be subdued by conciliation, gifts, or division; therefore, conquer them only by valor.
तान्विक्रमेण जित्वेमामखिलां भुङ्क्ष्व मेदिनीम्। नान्यमत्र प्रपश्यामि कार्योपायं जनाधिप ॥१-१९४-२१॥
O lord of people, conquer all of them by your prowess and enjoy this entire earth. I do not see any other means for achieving your objective here.
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥
Vaiśampāyana said.
श्रुत्वा तु राधेयवचो धृतराष्ट्रः प्रतापवान्। अभिपूज्य ततः पश्चादिदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥१-१९४-२२॥
But after hearing the words of Rādheya, the glorious Dhṛtarāṣṭra, having duly honored him, then spoke these words.
उपपन्नं महाप्राज्ञे कृतास्त्रे सूतनन्दने। त्वयि विक्रमसम्पन्नमिदं वचनमीदृशम् ॥१-१९४-२३॥
O greatly wise son of Sūta, who has mastered weapons and is endowed with valor, such words as these are appropriate in you.
भूय एव तु भीष्मश्च द्रोणो विदुर एव च। युवां च कुरुतां बुद्धिं भवेद्या नः सुखोदया ॥१-१९४-२४॥
But again, let Bhishma, Drona, Vidura, and you two together make a decision which may bring happiness to us.
तत आनाय्य तान्सर्वान्मन्त्रिणः सुमहायशाः। धृतराष्ट्रो महाराज मन्त्रयामास वै तदा ॥१-१९४-२५॥
Then the illustrious King Dhritarashtra, having summoned all his ministers, held a consultation at that time.
