उक्तवन्तो यदा वाक्यमसकृत्सर्ववृष्णयः। ततोऽब्रवीद्वासुदेवो वाक्यं धर्मार्थसंहितम् ॥१-२१३-१॥
uktavanto yadā vākyam asakṛt sarva-vṛṣṇayaḥ। tato 'bravīd vāsudevo vākyaṃ dharmārthasaṃhitam ॥1-213-1॥
[उक्तवन्तः (uktavantaḥ) - having spoken; यदा (yadā) - when; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - speech; असकृत् (asakṛt) - repeatedly; सर्ववृष्णयः (sarva-vṛṣṇayaḥ) - all the Vṛṣṇis; ततः (tataḥ) - then; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; वासुदेवः (vāsudevaḥ) - Vāsudeva; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - speech; धर्मार्थसंहितम् (dharmārthasaṃhitam) - joined with dharma and artha;]
(Having spoken the speech repeatedly, all the Vṛṣṇis—then Vāsudeva said a speech joined with dharma and artha.)
When all the Vṛṣṇis had repeatedly spoken, then Vāsudeva spoke words imbued with righteousness and purpose.
नावमानं कुलस्यास्य गुडाकेशः प्रयुक्तवान्। संमानोऽभ्यधिकस्तेन प्रयुक्तोऽयमसंशयम् ॥१-२१३-२॥
nāvamānaṃ kulasyāsya guḍākeśaḥ prayuktavān। saṃmāno'bhyadhikastena prayukto'yamasaṃśayam ॥1-213-2॥
[नावमानम् (nāvamānam) - no disrespect; कुलस्य (kulasya) - of the family; अस्य (asya) - of this; गुडाकेशः (guḍākeśaḥ) - Guḍākeśa (Arjuna); प्रयुक्तवान् (prayuktavān) - has shown; संमानः (saṃmānaḥ) - honor; अभ्यधिकः (abhyadhikaḥ) - excessive; तेन (tena) - by him; प्रयुक्तः (prayuktaḥ) - has been shown; अयम् (ayam) - this; असंशयम् (asaṃśayam) - undoubtedly;]
(No disrespect of this family has Guḍākeśa shown. Honor, excessive, by him has been shown, this undoubtedly.)
Guḍākeśa (Arjuna) has shown no disrespect to this family. On the contrary, he has shown great honor, without a doubt.
अर्थलुब्धान्न वः पार्थो मन्यते सात्वतान्सदा। स्वयंवरमनाधृष्यं मन्यते चापि पाण्डवः ॥१-२१३-३॥
arthalubdhān na vaḥ pārtho manyate sātvatān sadā। svayaṃvaram anādhṛṣyaṃ manyate cāpi pāṇḍavaḥ ॥1-213-3॥
[अर्थलुब्धान् (arthalubdhān) - greedy for wealth; न (na) - not; वः (vaḥ) - you (plural); पार्थः (pārthaḥ) - Pārtha (Arjuna); मन्यते (manyate) - considers; सात्वतान् (sātvatān) - Sātvatas (Yādavas); सदा (sadā) - always; स्वयंवरम् (svayaṃvaram) - svayaṃvara (self-choice ceremony); अनाधृष्यम् (anādhṛṣyam) - unassailable; मन्यते (manyate) - considers; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; पाण्डवः (pāṇḍavaḥ) - the Pāṇḍava (Arjuna);]
(Pārtha does not consider you (all) as greedy for wealth; always considers the Sātvatas. The Pāṇḍava also considers the svayaṃvara as unassailable.)

प्रदानमपि कन्यायाः पशुवत्कोऽनुमंस्यते। विक्रयं चाप्यपत्यस्य कः कुर्यात्पुरुषो भुवि ॥१-२१३-४॥
pradānam api kanyāyāḥ paśuvat ko'numaṁsyate। vikrayaṁ cāpyapatyasya kaḥ kuryāt puruṣo bhuvi ॥1-213-4॥
[प्रदानम् (pradānam) - giving; offering; अपि (api) - even; also; कन्यायाः (kanyāyāḥ) - of a maiden; of a girl; पशुवत् (paśuvat) - like an animal; कः (kaḥ) - who; अनुमंस्यते (anumaṁsyate) - would approve; would consent; विक्रयम् (vikrayam) - sale; selling; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - even; also; अपत्यस्य (apatyasya) - of offspring; of a child; कः (kaḥ) - who; कुर्यात् (kuryāt) - would do; would perform; पुरुषः (puruṣaḥ) - man; person; भुवि (bhuvi) - on earth; in the world;]
(Even the giving of a maiden, who would approve as if (she were) an animal? And who would perform the sale of offspring, a man on earth?)
Who would approve of giving away a maiden as if she were an animal? And what man on earth would sell his own child?
एतान्दोषांश्च कौन्तेयो दृष्टवानिति मे मतिः। अतः प्रसह्य हृतवान्कन्यां धर्मेण पाण्डवः ॥१-२१३-५॥
etāndoṣāṃś ca kaunteyo dṛṣṭavān iti me matiḥ। ataḥ prasahya hṛtvāṃ kanyāṃ dharmeṇa pāṇḍavaḥ ॥1-213-5॥
[एतान् (etān) - these; (accusative plural masculine) दोषान् (doṣān) - faults; (accusative plural masculine) च (ca) - and; कौन्तेयः (kaunteyaḥ) - son of Kunti; दृष्टवान् (dṛṣṭavān) - having seen; इति (iti) - thus; मे (me) - my; मतिः (matiḥ) - opinion; अतः (ataḥ) - therefore; प्रसह्य (prasahya) - by force; हृतवान् (hṛtvān) - having taken away; कन्यां (kanyāṃ) - the maiden; धर्मेण (dharmeṇa) - according to dharma; पाण्डवः (pāṇḍavaḥ) - the Pāṇḍava; ॥१-२१३-५॥ (॥1-213-5॥) - (verse number);]
(These faults and the son of Kunti having seen thus my opinion. Therefore, by force having taken away the maiden according to dharma, the Pāṇḍava.)
It is my opinion that the son of Kunti, having seen these faults, therefore took the maiden by force, yet in accordance with dharma, O Pāṇḍava.
उचितश्चैव सम्बन्धः सुभद्रा च यशस्विनी। एष चापीदृशः पार्थः प्रसह्य हृतवानिति ॥१-२१३-६॥

(Proper and indeed is the relationship, and Subhadrā the illustrious. This such Pārtha (Arjuna) also has carried off by force, thus.)

भरतस्यान्वये जातं शन्तनोश्च महात्मनः। कुन्तिभोजात्मजापुत्रं को बुभूषेत नार्जुनम् ॥१-२१३-७॥
bharatasyānvaye jātaṃ śantanoś ca mahātmanaḥ। kuntibhojātmajāputraṃ ko bubhūṣeta nārjunam ॥1-213-7॥

Who, being of Bharata's line, born of the great Śantanu, and the grandson of Kuntibhoja, would wish to surpass Arjuna?
न च पश्यामि यः पार्थं विक्रमेण पराजयेत्। अपि सर्वेषु लोकेषु सेन्द्ररुद्रेषु मारिष ॥१-२१३-८॥
na ca paśyāmi yaḥ pārthaṃ vikrameṇa parājayet। api sarveṣu lokeṣu sendrarudreṣu māriṣa ॥1-213-8॥

(And I do not see who could defeat Pārtha by prowess, even among all the worlds with Indra and Rudra, O dear one.)
O dear one, I do not see anyone, even among all the worlds with Indra and Rudra, who could defeat Arjuna by prowess.
स च नाम रथस्तादृङ्मदीयास्ते च वाजिनः। योद्धा पार्थश्च शीघ्रास्त्रः को नु तेन समो भवेत् ॥१-२१३-९॥
sa ca nāma rathas tādṛṅ madīyās te ca vājinaḥ। yoddhā pārthaś ca śīghrāstraḥ ko nu tena samo bhavet ॥1-213-9॥
[स (sa) - he; च (ca) - and; नाम (nāma) - indeed; रथः (rathaḥ) - chariot; तादृक् (tādṛk) - such; मदीयाः (madīyāḥ) - my; ते (te) - those; च (ca) - and; वाजिनः (vājinaḥ) - horses; योद्धा (yoddhā) - warrior; पार्थः (pārthaḥ) - Pārtha (Arjuna); च (ca) - and; शीघ्रास्त्रः (śīghrāstraḥ) - swift in weapons; कः (kaḥ) - who; नु (nu) - indeed; तेन (tena) - with him; समः (samaḥ) - equal; भवेत् (bhavet) - would be;]
(He and indeed the chariot is such, my those and horses; the warrior Pārtha and swift in weapons; who indeed with him equal would be?)
He, and indeed that chariot, my horses, and the warrior Pārtha, swift in weapons—who indeed could be equal to him?
तमनुद्रुत्य सान्त्वेन परमेण धनञ्जयम्। निवर्तयध्वं संहृष्टा ममैषा परमा मतिः ॥१-२१३-१०॥
tamanudrutya sāntvena parameṇa dhanañjayam। nivartayadhvaṃ saṃhṛṣṭā mama eṣā paramā matiḥ ॥1-213-10॥
[तम् (tam) - him; अनुद्रुत्य (anudrutya) - having followed; सान्त्वेन (sāntvena) - with conciliation; परमेण (parameṇa) - supreme; धनञ्जयम् (dhanañjayam) - Dhanañjaya (Arjuna); निवर्तयध्वम् (nivartayadhvam) - turn back; संहृष्टाः (saṃhṛṣṭāḥ) - joyful; मम (mama) - my; एषा (eṣā) - this; परमा (paramā) - supreme; मतिः (matiḥ) - thought;]
(Having followed him with supreme conciliation, turn back Dhanañjaya joyfully; this is my supreme thought.)
Follow him and, with utmost conciliation, joyfully bring back Dhanañjaya; this is my highest wish.
यदि निर्जित्य वः पार्थो बलाद्गच्छेत्स्वकं पुरम्। प्रणश्येद्वो यशः सद्यो न तु सान्त्वे पराजयः ॥१-२१३-११॥
yadi nirjitya vaḥ pārtho balādgacchetsvakaṃ puram। praṇaśyedvo yaśaḥ sadyo na tu sāntve parājayaḥ ॥1-213-11॥
[यदि (yadi) - if; निर्जित्य (nirjitya) - having conquered; वः (vaḥ) - your; पार्थः (pārthaḥ) - Pārtha (Arjuna); बलात् (balāt) - by force; गच्छेत् (gacchet) - should go; स्वकं (svakam) - his own; पुरम् (puram) - city; प्रणश्येत् (praṇaśyet) - would perish; वः (vaḥ) - your; यशः (yaśaḥ) - fame; सद्यः (sadyaḥ) - immediately; न (na) - not; तु (tu) - but; सान्त्वे (sāntve) - in conciliation; पराजयः (parājayaḥ) - defeat;]
(If, having conquered, Pārtha (Arjuna) by force should go to his own city, your fame would immediately perish, but not defeat in conciliation.)
If Pārtha (Arjuna) conquers you by force and returns to his own city, your fame will be lost at once; but if you are defeated through conciliation, it will not be so.
तच्छ्रुत्वा वासुदेवस्य तथा चक्रुर्जनाधिप। निवृत्तश्चार्जुनस्तत्र विवाहं कृतवांस्ततः ॥१-२१३-१२॥
tacchrutvā vāsudevasya tathā cakruḥ janādhipa। nivṛttaḥ ca arjunaḥ tatra vivāhaṃ kṛtavān tataḥ ॥1-213-12॥
[तत् (tat) - that; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; वासुदेवस्य (vāsudevasya) - of Vāsudeva; तथा (tathā) - thus; चक्रुः (cakruḥ) - did (they); जनाधिप (janādhipa) - kings; निवृत्तः (nivṛttaḥ) - withdrawn; च (ca) - and; अर्जुनः (arjunaḥ) - Arjuna; तत्र (tatra) - there; विवाहम् (vivāham) - marriage; कृतवान् (kṛtavān) - performed; ततः (tataḥ) - then;]
(That having heard of Vāsudeva, thus did the kings. Withdrawn and Arjuna there marriage performed then.)
Having heard this about Vāsudeva, the kings acted accordingly. Then Arjuna, having withdrawn, performed the marriage there.
उषित्वा तत्र कौन्तेयः संवत्सरपराः क्षपाः। पुष्करेषु ततः शिष्टं कालं वर्तितवान्प्रभुः ॥ पूर्णे तु द्वादशे वर्षे खाण्डवप्रस्थमाविशत् ॥१-२१३-१३॥
uṣitvā tatra kaunteyaḥ saṃvatsaraparaḥ kṣapāḥ। puṣkareṣu tataḥ śiṣṭaṃ kālaṃ vartitavān prabhuḥ ॥ pūrṇe tu dvādaśe varṣe khāṇḍavaprastham āviśat ॥1-213-13॥
[उषित्वा (uṣitvā) - having dwelt; तत्र (tatra) - there; कौन्तेयः (kaunteyaḥ) - son of Kunti; संवत्सरपराः (saṃvatsaraparaḥ) - for the period of a year; क्षपाः (kṣapāḥ) - nights; पुष्करेषु (puṣkareṣu) - in the Pushkara (sacred lakes); ततः (tataḥ) - then; शिष्टं (śiṣṭam) - remaining; कालं (kālam) - time; वर्तितवान् (vartitavān) - spent; प्रभुः (prabhuḥ) - the lord; पूर्णे (pūrṇe) - when completed; तु (tu) - but; द्वादशे (dvādaśe) - twelfth; वर्षे (varṣe) - year; खाण्डवप्रस्थम् (khāṇḍavaprastham) - Khandavaprastha; आविशत् (āviśat) - entered;]
(Having dwelt there, the son of Kunti spent the nights for the period of a year; then, in the Pushkaras, the lord spent the remaining time. But when the twelfth year was completed, he entered Khandavaprastha.)
Having spent a year there, the son of Kunti (Yudhishthira) passed the nights at Pushkara, and then, after spending the remaining time, when the twelfth year was completed, he entered Khandavaprastha.
अभिगम्य स राजानं विनयेन समाहितः। अभ्यर्च्य ब्राह्मणान्पार्थो द्रौपदीमभिजग्मिवान् ॥१-२१३-१४॥
abhigamya sa rājānaṃ vinayena samāhitaḥ। abhyarcya brāhmaṇānpārtho draupadīmabhijagmivān ॥1-213-14॥
[अभिगम्य (abhigamya) - having approached; सः (saḥ) - he; राजानम् (rājānam) - the king; विनयेन (vinayena) - with humility; समाहितः (samāhitaḥ) - composed; अभ्यर्च्य (abhyarcya) - having worshipped; ब्राह्मणान् (brāhmaṇān) - the Brāhmaṇas; पार्थः (pārthaḥ) - Pārtha (Arjuna); द्रौपदीम् (draupadīm) - Draupadī; अभिजग्मिवान् (abhijagmivān) - approached;]
(Having approached the king with humility, composed, and having worshipped the Brāhmaṇas, Pārtha (Arjuna) approached Draupadī.)
Arjuna, after respectfully approaching the king with humility and composure and worshipping the Brāhmaṇas, went to Draupadī.
तं द्रौपदी प्रत्युवाच प्रणयात्कुरुनन्दनम्। तत्रैव गच्छ कौन्तेय यत्र सा सात्वतात्मजा ॥ सुबद्धस्यापि भारस्य पूर्वबन्धः श्लथायते ॥१-२१३-१५॥
taṃ draupadī pratyuvāca praṇayāt kurunandanam। tatraiva gaccha kaunteya yatra sā sātvatātmajā ॥ subaddhasyāpi bhārasya pūrvabandhaḥ ślathāyate ॥1-213-15॥
[तं (taṃ) - him; द्रौपदी (draupadī) - Draupadī; प्रत्युवाच (pratyuvāca) - replied; प्रणयात् (praṇayāt) - with affection; कुरुनन्दनम् (kurunandanam) - O joy of the Kurus; तत्रैव (tatraiva) - right there; गच्छ (gaccha) - go; कौन्तेय (kaunteya) - O son of Kunti; यत्र (yatra) - where; सा (sā) - she; सात्वतात्मजा (sātvatātmajā) - daughter of Sātvata; सुबद्धस्यापि (subaddhasya api) - even of what is well-tied; भारस्य (bhārasya) - of the burden; पूर्वबन्धः (pūrvabandhaḥ) - former binding; श्लथायते (ślathāyate) - becomes loosened;]
(Draupadī replied to him, O joy of the Kurus, with affection: "Go right there, O son of Kunti, where she, the daughter of Sātvata, is." Even the former binding of a well-tied burden becomes loosened.)
Draupadī affectionately replied to him, "Go at once, O son of Kunti, to where the daughter of Sātvata is." Even the strongest bonds of a well-secured burden eventually loosen.
तथा बहुविधं कृष्णां विलपन्तीं धनञ्जयः। सान्त्वयामास भूयश्च क्षमयामास चासकृत् ॥१-२१३-१६॥
tathā bahuvidhaṃ kṛṣṇāṃ vilapantīṃ dhanañjayaḥ। sāntvayāmāsa bhūyaś ca kṣamayāmāsa cāsakṛt ॥1-213-16॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; बहुविधं (bahuvidhaṃ) - of many kinds; कृष्णां (kṛṣṇām) - Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī); विलपन्तीं (vilapantīṃ) - lamenting; धनञ्जयः (dhanañjayaḥ) - Dhanañjaya (Arjuna); सान्त्वयामास (sāntvayāmāsa) - consoled; भूयः (bhūyaḥ) - again; च (ca) - and; क्षमयामास (kṣamayāmāsa) - asked forgiveness; च (ca) - and; असकृत् (asakṛt) - repeatedly;]
(Thus, Dhanañjaya (Arjuna) consoled Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī), who was lamenting in many ways, and again and again asked her forgiveness.)

सुभद्रां त्वरमाणश्च रक्तकौशेयवाससम्। पार्थः प्रस्थापयामास कृत्वा गोपालिकावपुः ॥१-२१३-१७॥
subhadrāṃ tvaramāṇaś ca raktakauśeyavāsasam। pārthaḥ prasthāpayām āsa kṛtvā gopālikāvapuḥ ॥1-213-17॥

Arjuna, hastening, dressed Subhadrā in red silk garments and, having assumed the form of a cowherdess, sent her away.
साधिकं तेन रूपेण शोभमाना यशस्विनी। भवनं श्रेष्ठमासाद्य वीरपत्नी वराङ्गना ॥ ववन्दे पृथुताम्राक्षी पृथां भद्रा यशस्विनी ॥१-२१३-१८॥
sādhikaṃ tena rūpeṇa śobhamānā yaśasvinī। bhavanaṃ śreṣṭham āsādya vīrapatnī varāṅganā ॥ vavande pṛthutāmrākṣī pṛthāṃ bhadrā yaśasvinī ॥1-213-18॥
[साधिकम् (sādhikam) - with excess; more than; exceeding; तेन (tena) - by that; with that; रूपेण (rūpeṇa) - by form; with beauty; शोभमाना (śobhamānā) - shining; being splendid; यशस्विनी (yaśasvinī) - illustrious; glorious woman; भवनम् (bhavanam) - house; mansion; श्रेष्ठम् (śreṣṭham) - excellent; best; आसाद्य (āsādya) - having reached; attaining; वीरपत्नी (vīrapatnī) - hero's wife; wife of a hero; वराङ्गना (varāṅganā) - excellent woman; noble lady; ववन्दे (vavande) - saluted; bowed; पृथुताम्राक्षी (pṛthutāmrākṣī) - broad coppery-eyed (woman); पृथाम् (pṛthām) - Pṛthā; Kuntī (proper name); भद्रा (bhadrā) - auspicious; blessed; यशस्विनी (yaśasvinī) - illustrious; glorious woman;]
(Exceeding with that form, the illustrious one, shining, having reached the excellent mansion, the hero's wife, the noble lady, the broad coppery-eyed, illustrious Bhadrā, saluted Pṛthā.)
Radiant and illustrious, Bhadrā, the noble wife of a hero, adorned with exceptional beauty, entered the excellent mansion and respectfully saluted Pṛthā, the broad coppery-eyed and renowned lady.
ततोऽभिगम्य त्वरिता पूर्णेन्दुसदृशानना। ववन्दे द्रौपदीं भद्रा प्रेष्याहमिति चाब्रवीत् ॥१-२१३-१९॥
tato'bhigamya tvaritā pūrṇendusadṛśānanā। vavande draupadīṃ bhadrā preṣyāhamiti cābravīt ॥1-213-19॥

Then Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī) gave birth to a son by Sahadeva, under the constellation presided over by Agni; he was known as Śrutasena.
