indraprasthe vasantas te jaghnur anyān narādhipān। śāsanād dhṛtarāṣṭrasya rājñaḥ śāntanavasya ca ॥1-214-1॥
[इन्द्रप्रस्थे (indraprasthe) - in Indraprastha; वसन्तः (vasantaḥ) - dwelling; ते (te) - they; जघ्नुः (jaghnuḥ) - killed; अन्यान् (anyān) - other; नराधिपान् (narādhipān) - kings; शासनात् (śāsanāt) - by the command; धृतराष्ट्रस्य (dhṛtarāṣṭrasya) - of Dhṛtarāṣṭra; राज्ञः (rājñaḥ) - of the king; शान्तनवस्य (śāntanavasya) - of the son of Śāntanu; च (ca) - and;]

आश्रित्य धर्मराजानं सर्वलोकोऽवसत्सुखम्। पुण्यलक्षणकर्माणं स्वदेहमिव देहिनः ॥१-२१४-२॥
āśritya dharmarājānaṃ sarvaloko'vasatsukham। puṇyalakṣaṇakarmāṇaṃ svadehamiva dehinaḥ ॥1-214-2॥

(Having resorted to Dharmarāja, all people dwelt happily; (regarding him as) one whose actions are marked by virtue, like (their) own body, (so did) the embodied beings.)
All people, having taken refuge in Dharmarāja (Yudhiṣṭhira), lived happily; the embodied beings regarded him, whose actions were marked by virtue, as they would their own body.
स समं धर्मकामार्थान्सिषेवे भरतर्षभः। त्रीनिवात्मसमान्बन्धून्बन्धुमानिव मानयन् ॥१-२१४-३॥
sa samaṃ dharmakāmārthān siṣeve bharatarṣabhaḥ। trīn iv ātmasamān bandhūn bandhūmān iva mānayan ॥1-214-3॥
[स (sa) - he; समम् (samam) - equally; धर्म (dharma) - righteousness; काम (kāma) - desire; अर्थान् (arthān) - objects (of pursuit); सिषेवे (siṣeve) - served; भरतर्षभः (bharatarṣabhaḥ) - the bull among the Bharatas; त्रीन् (trīn) - three; इव (iva) - as if; आत्मसमान् (ātmasamān) - equal to himself; बन्धून् (bandhūn) - kinsmen; बन्धुमान् (bandhumān) - having kinsmen; इव (iva) - as if; मानयन् (mānayan) - honoring;]
(He, the bull among the Bharatas, served righteousness, desire, and wealth equally; honoring his three kinsmen as if they were equal to himself, as one having kinsmen.)
He, the foremost among the Bharatas, equally pursued righteousness, desire, and wealth; he honored his three kinsmen as if they were his own self, like one who truly values his family.
तेषां समविभक्तानां क्षितौ देहवतामिव। बभौ धर्मार्थकामानां चतुर्थ इव पार्थिवः ॥१-२१४-४॥
teṣāṃ samavibhaktānāṃ kṣitau dehavatām iva। babhau dharmārthakāmānāṃ caturtha iva pārthivaḥ ॥1-214-4॥
[तेषां (teṣām) - of them; समविभक्तानां (samavibhaktānām) - of those equally divided; क्षितौ (kṣitau) - on the earth; देहवताम् (dehavatām) - of those having bodies; इव (iva) - like; बभौ (babhau) - shone; धर्मार्थकामानां (dharmārthakāmānām) - of dharma, artha, and kāma; चतुर्थः (caturthaḥ) - the fourth; इव (iva) - like; पार्थिवः (pārthivaḥ) - the king;]
(Of them, of those equally divided, on the earth, of those having bodies, like, shone, of dharma, artha, and kāma, the fourth, like, the king.)
Among them, who were equally divided on earth as embodied beings, the king shone like a fourth among dharma, artha, and kāma.
अध्येतारं परं वेदाः प्रयोक्तारं महाध्वराः। रक्षितारं शुभं वर्णा लेभिरे तं जनाधिपम् ॥१-२१४-५॥
adhyetāraṃ paraṃ vedāḥ prayoktāraṃ mahādhvarāḥ। rakṣitāraṃ śubhaṃ varṇā lebhire taṃ janādhipam ॥1-214-5॥
[अध्येतारं (adhyetāram) - the one who studies; (from adhi + i + ṭṛ) ; परं (param) - supreme; highest; वेदाः (vedāḥ) - the Vedas; sacred knowledge; प्रयोक्तारं (prayoktāram) - the one who performs; (from pra + yuj + ṭṛ); महाध्वराः (mahādhvarāḥ) - great sacrifices; (mahā + adhvara); रक्षितारं (rakṣitāram) - the one who protects; (from rakṣ + ṭṛ); शुभं (śubham) - auspicious; good; वर्णा (varṇā) - classes; castes; लेभिरे (lebhire) - obtained; (from labh); तं (tam) - him; that; जनाधिपम् (janādhipam) - lord of people; (jana + adhipa);]
(The Vedas obtained as their supreme student, the great sacrifices as their performer, the classes as their auspicious protector, him, the lord of people.)
The Vedas regarded him as their supreme student, the great sacrifices as their chief performer, and the classes as their auspicious protector; thus, they accepted him as the lord of the people.
अधिष्ठानवती लक्ष्मीः परायणवती मतिः। बन्धुमानखिलो धर्मस्तेनासीत्पृथिवीक्षिता ॥१-२१४-६॥
adhiṣṭhānavatī lakṣmīḥ parāyaṇavatī matiḥ। bandhumānakhilo dharmastenāsītpṛthivīkṣitā ॥1-214-6॥
[अधिष्ठानवती (adhiṣṭhānavatī) - possessed of foundation; लक्ष्मीः (lakṣmīḥ) - prosperity; परायणवती (parāyaṇavatī) - endowed with refuge; मतिः (matiḥ) - intellect; बन्धुमान् (bandhumān) - having relatives; अखिलः (akhilaḥ) - entire; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - righteousness; तेन (tena) - by him; असीत् (āsīt) - was; पृथिवी (pṛthivī) - earth; क्षिताः (kṣitāḥ) - protected;]
(Possessed of foundation, prosperity; endowed with refuge, intellect; having relatives, entire righteousness; by him was the earth protected.)
He possessed a firm foundation and prosperity, was endowed with a mind that sought the highest refuge, had many relatives, and complete righteousness; by him, the earth was protected.
भ्रातृभिः सहितो राजा चतुर्भिरधिकं बभौ। प्रयुज्यमानैर्विततो वेदैरिव महाध्वरः ॥१-२१४-७॥
bhrātṛbhiḥ sahito rājā caturbhir adhikaṃ babhau। prayujyamānair vitato vedair iva mahādhvaraḥ ॥1-214-7॥
[भ्रातृभिः (bhrātṛbhiḥ) - with brothers; सहितः (sahitaḥ) - accompanied; राजा (rājā) - king; चतुर्भिः (caturbhiḥ) - by four; अधिकं (adhikaṃ) - exceedingly; बभौ (babhau) - shone; प्रयुज्यमानैः (prayujyamānaiḥ) - being performed; विततः (vitataḥ) - spread; वेदैः (vedaiḥ) - by Vedas; इव (iva) - like; महाध्वरः (mahādhvaraḥ) - great sacrifice;]
(The king, accompanied by his brothers, shone exceedingly with the four, like a great sacrifice spread by the Vedas being performed.)
The king, together with his four brothers, shone brilliantly, just as a great sacrifice is glorified when performed with the Vedas.
तं तु धौम्यादयो विप्राः परिवार्योपतस्थिरे। बृहस्पतिसमा मुख्याः प्रजापतिमिवामराः ॥१-२१४-८॥
taṃ tu dhaumyādayo viprāḥ parivāryopatasthire। bṛhaspatisamā mukhyāḥ prajāpatimivāmarāḥ ॥1-214-8॥
[तं (taṃ) - him; तु (tu) - but; धौम्यादयः (dhaumyādayaḥ) - Dhaumya and others; विप्राः (viprāḥ) - Brāhmaṇas; परिवार्य (parivārya) - having surrounded; उपतस्थिरे (upatasthire) - attended; बृहस्पतिसमाः (bṛhaspatisamāḥ) - equal to Bṛhaspati; मुख्याः (mukhyāḥ) - chiefs; प्रजापतिम् (prajāpatim) - Prajāpati; इव (iva) - like; अमराः (amarāḥ) - the immortals;]
(But Dhaumya and the other Brāhmaṇas, having surrounded him, attended (on him); the chiefs, equal to Bṛhaspati, (attended) on Prajāpati like the immortals.)
But Dhaumya and the other Brāhmaṇas surrounded him and attended to him; the chief priests, equal to Bṛhaspati, attended on him as the immortals do on Prajāpati.
धर्मराजे अतिप्रीत्या पूर्णचन्द्र इवामले। प्रजानां रेमिरे तुल्यं नेत्राणि हृदयानि च ॥१-२१४-९॥
dharmarāje atiprītyā pūrṇacandra ivāmale। prajānāṃ remire tulyaṃ netrāṇi hṛdayāni ca ॥1-214-9॥

(In the king of dharma, with great joy, like a spotless full moon, the eyes and hearts of the subjects delighted equally.)
The subjects' eyes and hearts rejoiced equally in the king of dharma, with great joy, just as in a spotless full moon.
न तु केवलदैवेन प्रजा भावेन रेमिरे। यद्बभूव मनःकान्तं कर्मणा स चकार तत् ॥१-२१४-१०॥
na tu kevaladaivena prajā bhāvena remire। yad babhūva manaḥkāntaṃ karmaṇā sa cakāra tat ॥1-214-10॥
[न (na) - not; तु (tu) - but; केवलदैवेन (kevaladaivena) - by mere fate; प्रजा (prajā) - people; भावेन (bhāvena) - by disposition; रेमिरे (remire) - enjoyed; यत् (yat) - what; बभूव (babhūva) - became; मनःकान्तम् (manaḥkāntam) - pleasing to the mind; कर्मणा (karmaṇā) - by action; स (sa) - he; चकार (cakāra) - did; तत् (tat) - that;]
(But not by mere fate did the people enjoy by disposition. What became pleasing to the mind, that he did by action.)
But the people did not enjoy life merely by fate; whatever was pleasing to the mind, he accomplished by his own actions.
न ह्ययुक्तं न चासत्यं नानृतं न च विप्रियम्। भाषितं चारुभाषस्य जज्ञे पार्थस्य धीमतः ॥१-२१४-११॥
na hyayuktaṃ na cāsatyaṃ nānṛtaṃ na ca vipriyam। bhāṣitaṃ cārubhāṣasya jajñe pārthasya dhīmataḥ ॥1-214-11॥
[न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; अयुक्तं (ayuktaṃ) - improper; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; असत्यं (asatyaṃ) - untrue; न (na) - not; अनृतं (anṛtaṃ) - falsehood; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; विप्रियम् (vipriyam) - unpleasant; भाषितं (bhāṣitaṃ) - spoken; चारुभाषस्य (cārubhāṣasya) - of the one with charming speech; जज्ञे (jajñe) - was produced; पार्थस्य (pārthasya) - of Pārtha (Arjuna); धीमतः (dhīmataḥ) - of the wise; ॥१-२१४-११॥ (॥1-214-11॥) - ;]
(Not indeed improper, not untrue, not falsehood, and not unpleasant was spoken by the one with charming speech, born of Pārtha, the wise.)
Nothing improper, untrue, false, or unpleasant was ever spoken by the wise Pārtha, whose speech was always charming.
स हि सर्वस्य लोकस्य हितमात्मन एव च। चिकीर्षुः सुमहातेजा रेमे भरतसत्तमः ॥१-२१४-१२॥
sa hi sarvasya lokasya hitam ātmana eva ca। cikīrṣuḥ sumahātejā reme bharatasattamaḥ ॥1-214-12॥
[स (sa) - he; हि (hi) - indeed; सर्वस्य (sarvasya) - of all; लोकस्य (lokasya) - of the world; हितम् (hitam) - welfare; आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - of himself; एव (eva) - only; च (ca) - and; चिकीर्षुः (cikīrṣuḥ) - desiring to do; सुमहातेजा (sumahātejā) - of great splendour; रेमे (reme) - delighted; भरतसत्तमः (bharatasattamaḥ) - best among the Bharatas;]
(He indeed, desiring to do the welfare of all the world and of himself only, the best among the Bharatas, of great splendour, delighted.)
He, truly wishing to accomplish the welfare of all the world and himself, the illustrious and mighty best of the Bharatas, rejoiced.
तथा तु मुदिताः सर्वे पाण्डवा विगतज्वराः। अवसन्पृथिवीपालांस्त्रासयन्तः स्वतेजसा ॥१-२१४-१३॥
tathā tu muditāḥ sarve pāṇḍavā vigatajvarāḥ। avasan pṛthivīpālāṃs trāsayantaḥ svatejasā ॥1-214-13॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; तु (tu) - but; मुदिताः (muditāḥ) - gladdened; सर्वे (sarve) - all; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pāṇḍavas; विगतज्वराः (vigatajvarāḥ) - free from anxiety; अवसन् (avasan) - dwelling; पृथिवीपालान् (pṛthivīpālān) - the kings of the earth; त्रासयन्तः (trāsayantaḥ) - causing to tremble; स्वतेजसा (svatejasā) - by their own brilliance;]
(Thus but gladdened all the Pāṇḍavas, free from anxiety, dwelling, the kings of the earth, causing to tremble by their own brilliance.)

ततः कतिपयाहस्य बीभत्सुः कृष्णमब्रवीत्। उष्णानि कृष्ण वर्तन्ते गच्छामो यमुनां प्रति ॥१-२१४-१४॥
tataḥ katipayāhasya bībhatsuḥ kṛṣṇam abravīt। uṣṇāni kṛṣṇa vartante gacchāmo yamunāṃ prati ॥1-214-14॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; कतिपयाहस्य (katipayāhasya) - of a few days; बीभत्सुः (bībhatsuḥ) - Bībhatsu (Arjuna); कृष्णम् (kṛṣṇam) - to Kṛṣṇa; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; उष्णानि (uṣṇāni) - hot (things); कृष्ण (kṛṣṇa) - Kṛṣṇa; वर्तन्ते (vartante) - are present; गच्छामः (gacchāmaḥ) - let us go; यमुनाम् (yamunām) - to Yamunā; प्रति (prati) - towards;]
(Then, after a few days, Bībhatsu said to Kṛṣṇa: "Hot things are present, Kṛṣṇa; let us go towards the Yamunā.")
After a few days, Arjuna said to Kṛṣṇa, "It is hot, Kṛṣṇa; let us go to the Yamunā."
सुहृज्जनवृतास्तत्र विहृत्य मधुसूदन। सायाह्ने पुनरेष्यामो रोचतां ते जनार्दन ॥१-२१४-१५॥
suhṛjjanavṛtās tatra vihṛtya madhusūdana। sāyāhne punareṣyāmo rocatāṃ te janārdana ॥1-214-15॥
[सुहृत् (suhṛt) - good-hearted; friend; जन (jana) - people; वृताः (vṛtāḥ) - surrounded; attended; तत्र (tatra) - there; विहृत्य (vihṛtya) - having enjoyed; having spent time; मधुसूदन (madhusūdana) - O slayer of Madhu; सायाह्ने (sāyāhne) - in the evening; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; एष्यामः (eṣyāmaḥ) - we shall come; रोचताम् (rocatām) - let it be pleasing; ते (te) - to you; जनार्दन (janārdana) - O Janardana;]
(Surrounded by good-hearted people, having enjoyed there, O Madhusudana, in the evening we shall come again; let it be pleasing to you, O Janardana.)
O Madhusudana, having spent time there surrounded by good-hearted people, we shall return again in the evening if it pleases you, O Janardana.
वासुदेव उवाच॥

कुन्तीमातर्ममाप्येतद्रोचते यद्वयं जले। सुहृज्जनवृताः पार्थ विहरेम यथासुखम् ॥१-२१४-१६॥
kuntīmātarmamāpyetadrocatē yadvayaṃ jalē| suhṛjjanavṛtāḥ pārtha viharem yathāsukham ॥1-214-16॥
[कुन्तीमातर् (kuntīmātar) - O mother Kuntī; मम (mama) - my; अपि (api) - also; एतत् (etat) - this; रोचते (rocate) - pleases; यत् (yat) - that; वयम् (vayam) - we; जले (jale) - in water; सुहृज्जनवृताः (suhṛjjanavṛtāḥ) - surrounded by friends; पार्थ (pārtha) - O Pārtha; विहरेम (viharem) - may roam; यथा (yathā) - as; सुखम् (sukham) - comfortably;]
(O mother Kuntī, even to me this pleases, that we, surrounded by friends, O Pārtha, may roam in the water as comfortably as possible.)
O mother Kuntī, I too am pleased by this idea: that we, surrounded by friends, O Pārtha, may enjoy ourselves in the water as we wish.

āmantrya dharmarājānam anujñāpya ca bhārata। jagmatuḥ pārthagovindau suhṛjjanavṛtau tataḥ ॥1-214-17॥

विहारदेशं सम्प्राप्य नानाद्रुमवदुत्तमम्। गृहैरुच्चावचैर्युक्तं पुरंदरगृहोपमम् ॥१-२१४-१८॥
vihāradeśaṃ samprāpya nānādrumavaduttamam| gṛhairuccāvacairyuktaṃ puraṃdaragṛhopamam ॥1-214-18॥
[विहारदेशम् (vihāradeśam) - pleasure-garden-region; सम्प्राप्य (samprāpya) - having reached; नानाद्रुमवत् (nānādrumavat) - with various trees; उत्तमम् (uttamam) - excellent; गृहैः (gṛhaiḥ) - with houses; उच्चावचैः (uccāvacaiḥ) - high and low; युक्तम् (yuktam) - endowed; पुरंदरगृह-उपमम् (puraṃdaragṛha-upamam) - like the house of Purandara (Indra);]
(Having reached the pleasure-garden region, excellent with various trees, endowed with houses high and low, like the house of Purandara (Indra).)

भक्ष्यैर्भोज्यैश्च पेयैश्च रसवद्भिर्महाधनैः। माल्यैश्च विविधैर्युक्तं युक्तं वार्ष्णेयपार्थयोः ॥१-२१४-१९॥
