vasanduryodhanastasyāṃ sabhāyāṃ bharatarṣabha। śanair dadarśa tāṃ sarvāṃ sabhāṃ śakunina saha ॥2-43-1॥
[वसन् (vasan) - dwelling; दुर्योधनः (duryodhanaḥ) - Duryodhana; तस्याम् (tasyām) - in that; सभायाम् (sabhāyām) - assembly; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - bull among the Bharatas; शनैः (śanaiḥ) - slowly; ददर्श (dadarśa) - he saw; ताम् (tām) - that; सर्वाम् (sarvām) - entire; सभाम् (sabhām) - assembly; शकुनिना (śakunina) - with Shakuni; सह (saha) - together;]
(Dwelling, Duryodhana in that assembly, O bull among the Bharatas, slowly saw that entire assembly together with Shakuni.)
O bull among the Bharatas, while dwelling in that assembly, Duryodhana slowly surveyed the entire hall together with Shakuni. (2-43-1)
तस्यां दिव्यानभिप्रायान्ददर्श कुरुनन्दनः। न दृष्टपूर्वा ये तेन नगरे नागसाह्वये ॥२-४३-२॥
tasyāṃ divyān abhiprāyān dadarśa kurunandanaḥ। na dṛṣṭapūrvā ye tena nagare nāgasāhvaye ॥2-43-2॥
[तस्यां (tasyāṃ) - in that (place); दिव्यान् (divyān) - divine; अभिप्रायान् (abhiprāyān) - intentions; ददर्श (dadarśa) - he saw; कुरुनन्दनः (kurunandanaḥ) - O delight of the Kurus (Arjuna); न (na) - not; दृष्टपूर्वा (dṛṣṭapūrvā) - seen before; ये (ye) - which; तेन (tena) - by him; नगरे (nagare) - in the city; नागसाह्वये (nāgasāhvaye) - called Nāgasāhvaya;]
(In that (place), O delight of the Kurus, he saw divine intentions, which had not been seen before by him in the city called Nāgasāhvaya.)
There, Arjuna beheld divine intentions never before seen by him in the city called Nāgasāhvaya. (2-43-2)
स कदाचित्सभामध्ये धार्तराष्ट्रो महीपतिः। स्फाटिकं तलमासाद्य जलमित्यभिशङ्कया ॥२-४३-३॥
sa kadācitsabhāmadhye dhārtarāṣṭro mahīpatiḥ। sphāṭikaṃ talamāsādya jalamityabhiśaṅkayā ॥2-43-3॥

(He, once, in the midst of the assembly, the son of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, the king, having approached the crystal floor, with suspicion that it was water, thus.)
Once, in the midst of the assembly, the king, son of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, approached the crystal floor, suspecting it to be water. (2-43-3)
स्ववस्त्रोत्कर्षणं राजा कृतवान्बुद्धिमोहितः। दुर्मना विमुखश्चैव परिचक्राम तां सभाम् ॥२-४३-४॥
svavastrottkarṣaṇaṃ rājā kṛtavān buddhimohitaḥ। durmanā vimukhaś caiva paricakrāma tāṃ sabhām ॥2-43-4॥

(The king, deluded in mind, having pulled his own garment, distressed and averted, indeed walked around that assembly.)
The king, bewildered in his mind, pulled at his own garment and, distressed and turning away, paced about that assembly hall. (2-43-4)
ततः स्फाटिकतोयां वै स्फाटिकाम्बुजशोभिताम्। वापीं मत्वा स्थलमिति सवासाः प्रापतज्जले ॥२-४३-५॥
tataḥ sphāṭikatoyāṃ vai sphāṭikāmbujaśobhitām। vāpīṃ matvā sthalamiti savāsāḥ prāpatajjale ॥2-43-5॥

(Then, seeing the pond with crystal-clear water, indeed adorned with crystal lotuses, having considered it as land, they, with their garments, fell into the water.)

जले निपतितं दृष्ट्वा किङ्करा जहसुर्भृशम्। वासांसि च शुभान्यस्मै प्रददू राजशासनात् ॥२-४३-६॥
jale nipatitaṃ dṛṣṭvā kiṅkarā jahasurbhṛśam। vāsāṃsi ca śubhānyasmai pradadū rājaśāsanāt ॥2-43-6॥
[जले (jale) - in water; निपतितं (nipatitaṃ) - fallen; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; किङ्करा (kiṅkarā) - servants; जहसुः (jahasuḥ) - laughed; भृशम् (bhṛśam) - greatly; वासांसि (vāsāṃsi) - garments; च (ca) - and; शुभानि (śubhāni) - auspicious; अस्मै (asmai) - to him; प्रददू (pradadū) - gave; राजशासनात् (rājaśāsanāt) - by the king's order;]
(Having seen (him) fallen in the water, the servants laughed greatly; and they gave auspicious garments to him by the king's order.)
When they saw him fall into the water, the servants laughed heartily; then, by the king's command, they gave him fine garments. (2-43-6)
तथागतं तु तं दृष्ट्वा भीमसेनो महाबलः। अर्जुनश्च यमौ चोभौ सर्वे ते प्राहसंस्तदा ॥२-४३-७॥
tathāgataṃ tu taṃ dṛṣṭvā bhīmaseno mahābalaḥ। arjunaś ca yamau cobhau sarve te prāhasaṃs tadā ॥2-43-7॥
[तथागतम् (tathāgatam) - thus-arrived; (having come in such a manner); तु (tu) - but; however; तम् (tam) - him; (that one); दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; भीमसेनः (bhīmasenaḥ) - Bhīmasena; (name of a person); महाबलः (mahābalaḥ) - of great strength; अर्जुनः (arjunaḥ) - Arjuna; (name of a person); च (ca) - and; यमौ (yamau) - the two sons of Yama; (referring to Nakula and Sahadeva); च (ca) - and; उभौ (ubhau) - both; सर्वे (sarve) - all; ते (te) - they; प्राहसंस् (prāhasaṃs) - laughed; (smiled); तदा (tadā) - then; at that time;]
(But having seen him thus arrived, Bhīmasena of great strength, Arjuna, and both the sons of Yama, all of them laughed at that time.)
But when they saw him arrive in that manner, Bhīmasena, mighty in strength, Arjuna, and both the sons of Yama—all of them laughed together at that moment. (2-43-7)
नामर्षयत्ततस्तेषामवहासममर्षणः। आकारं रक्षमाणस्तु न स तान्समुदैक्षत ॥२-४३-८॥
nāmarṣayattatasteṣāmavahāsamamarṣaṇaḥ। ākāraṃ rakṣamāṇastu na sa tānsamudaikṣata ॥2-43-8॥
[न (na) - not; अमर्षयत् (amarṣayat) - endured; ततः (tataḥ) - then; तेषाम् (teṣām) - of them; अवहासम् (avahāsam) - mockery; अमर्षणः (amarṣaṇaḥ) - one who does not tolerate; आकारम् (ākāram) - appearance; रक्षमाणः (rakṣamāṇaḥ) - protecting; तु (tu) - but; सः (saḥ) - he; तान् (tān) - them; समुदैक्षत (samudaikṣata) - looked at together;]
(Not endured then of them mockery, one who does not tolerate, appearance protecting but he them did not look at together.)
He, not tolerating their mockery, protecting his appearance, did not look at them all together. (2-43-8)
पुनर्वसनमुत्क्षिप्य प्रतरिष्यन्निव स्थलम्। आरुरोह ततः सर्वे जहसुस्ते पुनर्जनाः ॥२-४३-९॥
punarvasanam utkṣipya pratariṣyan niva sthalām। āruroha tataḥ sarve jahasuste punarjanāḥ ॥2-43-9॥
[पुनः (punaḥ) - again; वसनम् (vasanam) - garment; उत्क्षिप्य (utkṣipya) - having lifted; प्रतरिष्यन् (pratariṣyan) - about to cross; इव (iva) - as if; स्थलम् (sthalam) - land; आरुरोह (āruroha) - ascended; ततः (tataḥ) - then; सर्वे (sarve) - all; जहसुः (jahasuḥ) - laughed; ते (te) - they; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; जनाः (janāḥ) - people;]
(Again, having lifted the garment, as if about to cross the land, he ascended; then all those people laughed again.)
Again, after lifting his garment as if to cross the land, he climbed up; then all those people laughed again. (2-43-9)
द्वारं च विवृताकारं ललाटेन समाहनत्। संवृतं चेति मन्वानो द्वारदेशादुपारमत् ॥२-४३-१०॥
dvāraṃ ca vivṛtākāraṃ lalāṭena samāhanat। saṃvṛtaṃ ceti manvāno dvāradeśādupāramat ॥2-43-10॥

(And he struck the door, which appeared open, with his forehead; thinking 'it is closed', he withdrew from the place of the door.)

एवं प्रलम्भान्विविधान्प्राप्य तत्र विशां पते। पाण्डवेयाभ्यनुज्ञातस्ततो दुर्योधनो नृपः ॥२-४३-११॥
evaṃ pralambhān vividhān prāpya tatra viśāṃ pate। pāṇḍaveyābhyanujñātaḥ tato duryodhano nṛpaḥ ॥2-43-11॥

(Thus, having obtained various deceptions there, O lord of kings, having been permitted by the sons of Pāṇḍu, then Duryodhana the king (acted).)
Thus, after employing various deceptions there, O lord of kings, and having received permission from the sons of Pāṇḍu, King Duryodhana then proceeded. (2-43-11)
अप्रहृष्टेन मनसा राजसूये महाक्रतौ। प्रेक्ष्य तामद्भुतामृद्धिं जगाम गजसाह्वयम् ॥२-४३-१२॥
aprahṛṣṭena manasā rājasūye mahākratau। prekṣya tām adbhutām ṛddhiṃ jagāma gajasāhvayam ॥2-43-12॥
[अप्रहृष्टेन (aprahṛṣṭena) - not-gladdened; मनसा (manasā) - with mind; राजसूये (rājasūye) - at the Rājasūya; महाक्रतौ (mahākratau) - great-sacrifice; प्रेक्ष्य (prekṣya) - having seen; ताम् (tām) - that; अद्भुताम् (adbhutām) - wonderful; ऋद्धिम् (ṛddhim) - prosperity; जगाम (jagāma) - went; गजसाह्वयम् (gajasāhvayam) - to Gajasāhvaya;]
(With a mind not gladdened, at the great Rājasūya sacrifice, having seen that wonderful prosperity, he went to Gajasāhvaya.)
With an ungladdened mind, after witnessing that extraordinary prosperity at the great Rājasūya sacrifice, he went to Gajasāhvaya. (2-43-12)
पाण्डवश्रीप्रतप्तस्य ध्यानग्लानस्य गच्छतः। दुर्योधनस्य नृपतेः पापा मतिरजायत ॥२-४३-१३॥
pāṇḍava-śrī-prataptasya dhyāna-glānasya gacchataḥ। duryodhanasya nṛpateḥ pāpā matir ajāyata ॥2-43-13॥
[पाण्डव (pāṇḍava) - of the Pāṇḍavas; श्री (śrī) - prosperity; प्रतप्तस्य (prataptasya) - afflicted; ध्यान (dhyāna) - meditation; ग्लानस्य (glānasya) - of the exhausted; गच्छतः (gacchataḥ) - going; दुर्योधनस्य (duryodhanasya) - of Duryodhana; नृपतेः (nṛpateḥ) - of the king; पापा (pāpā) - evil; मतिः (matiḥ) - mind; अजायत (ajāyata) - arose;]
(Of the Pāṇḍavas' prosperity being afflicted, of the one exhausted in meditation, as he was going; in Duryodhana, the king, an evil mind arose.)
As the prosperity of the Pāṇḍavas was afflicted and he, exhausted from meditation, was departing, an evil thought arose in the mind of King Duryodhana. (2-43-13)
पार्थान्सुमनसो दृष्ट्वा पार्थिवांश्च वशानुगान्। कृत्स्नं चापि हितं लोकमाकुमारं कुरूद्वह ॥२-४३-१४॥
pārthān sumanaso dṛṣṭvā pārthivāṃś ca vaśānugān। kṛtsnaṃ cāpi hitaṃ lokam ākumāraṃ kurūdvaha ॥2-43-14॥
[पार्थान् (pārthān) - the sons of Pṛthā; सुमनसः (sumanasaḥ) - with happy minds; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; पार्थिवान् (pārthivān) - kings; च (ca) - and; वशानुगान् (vaśānugān) - those who follow (their) will; कृत्स्नम् (kṛtsnam) - entire; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; हितम् (hitam) - beneficial; लोकम् (lokam) - world; आकुमारम् (ākumāram) - from childhood; कुरूद्वह (kurūdvaha) - O best of Kurus;]
(Having seen the sons of Pṛthā with happy minds, and the kings who follow (their) will, and also the entire beneficial world from childhood, O best of Kurus.)
O best of Kurus, having seen the sons of Pṛthā joyful, the kings obedient to their will, and the entire world benefiting from their rule since childhood. (2-43-14)
महिमानं परं चापि पाण्डवानां महात्मनाम्। दुर्योधनो धार्तराष्ट्रो विवर्णः समपद्यत ॥२-४३-१५॥
mahimānaṃ paraṃ cāpi pāṇḍavānāṃ mahātmanām। duryodhano dhārtarāṣṭro vivarṇaḥ samapadyata ॥2-43-15॥

Seeing the supreme greatness of the noble Pāṇḍavas, Duryodhana, the son of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, turned pale. (2-43-15)
स तु गच्छन्ननेकाग्रः सभामेवानुचिन्तयन्। श्रियं च तामनुपमां धर्मराजस्य धीमतः ॥२-४३-१६॥
sa tu gacchann anekāgraḥ sabhām eva anucintayan। śriyaṃ ca tām anupamāṃ dharmarājasya dhīmataḥ ॥2-43-16॥
[स (sa) - he; तु (tu) - but; गच्छन् (gacchan) - going; अनेकाग्रः (anekāgraḥ) - with many thoughts; सभाम् (sabhām) - assembly hall; एव (eva) - indeed; अनुचिन्तयन् (anucintayan) - reflecting upon; श्रियम् (śriyam) - prosperity; च (ca) - and; ताम् (tām) - that; अनुपमाम् (anupamām) - incomparable; धर्मराजस्य (dharmarājasya) - of Dharmarāja; धीमतः (dhīmataḥ) - of the wise;]
(He but going with many thoughts, assembly hall indeed reflecting upon, prosperity and that incomparable of Dharmarāja of the wise.)
But as he went, his mind filled with many thoughts, he kept reflecting only on the assembly hall and the incomparable prosperity of the wise Dharmarāja. (2-43-16)
प्रमत्तो धृतराष्ट्रस्य पुत्रो दुर्योधनस्तदा। नाभ्यभाषत्सुबलजं भाषमाणं पुनः पुनः ॥२-४३-१७॥
pramatto dhṛtarāṣṭrasya putro duryodhanastadā। nābhyabhāṭsubalajaṃ bhāṣamāṇaṃ punaḥ punaḥ ॥2-43-17॥
[प्रमत्तः (pramattaḥ) - careless; intoxicated; heedless; धृतराष्ट्रस्य (dhṛtarāṣṭrasya) - of Dhritarashtra; पुत्रः (putraḥ) - son; दुर्योधनः (duryodhanaḥ) - Duryodhana; तदा (tadā) - then; न (na) - not; अभ्यभाषत् (abhyabhāṣat) - addressed; spoke to; सुबलजम् (subalajam) - the son of Subala; भाषमाणम् (bhāṣamāṇam) - speaking; पुनः पुनः (punaḥ punaḥ) - again and again;]
(Careless, the son of Dhritarashtra, Duryodhana, then did not address the son of Subala, who was speaking again and again.)
At that time, Duryodhana, the son of Dhritarashtra, being careless, did not respond to the son of Subala, though he was speaking repeatedly. (2-43-17)
अनेकाग्रं तु तं दृष्ट्वा शकुनिः प्रत्यभाषत। दुर्योधन कुतोमूलं निःश्वसन्निव गच्छसि ॥२-४३-१८॥
anekāgraṃ tu taṃ dṛṣṭvā śakuniḥ pratyabhāṣata। duryodhana kutomūlaṃ niḥśvasanniva gacchasi ॥2-43-18॥
[अनेकाग्रं (anekāgram) - not single-pointed; many-pointed; scattered; तु (tu) - but; तं (tam) - him; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; शकुनिः (śakuniḥ) - Śakuni; प्रत्यभाषत (pratyabhāṣata) - addressed; spoke to; दुर्योधन (duryodhana) - Duryodhana; कुतोमूलं (kutomūlam) - from what root; from where; निःश्वसन् (niḥśvasan) - sighing; exhaling; इव (iva) - as if; like; गच्छसि (gacchasi) - you go; you proceed;]
(But seeing him scattered (in mind), Śakuni addressed (him): "Duryodhana, from what root (cause), as if sighing, do you go?")
But seeing him distracted, Śakuni said: "Duryodhana, from what cause, as if sighing, are you going?" (2-43-18)

dṛṣṭvemāṃ pṛthivīṃ kṛtsnāṃ yudhiṣṭhiravaśānugām। jitāmastrapratāpena śvetāśvasya mahātmanaḥ ॥2-43-19॥
[दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; इमां (imām) - this; पृथिवीं (pṛthivīm) - earth; कृत्स्नां (kṛtsnām) - entire; युधिष्ठिरवशानुगाम् (yudhiṣṭhiravaśānugām) - following the will of Yudhishthira; जिताम् (jitām) - conquered; अस्त्रप्रतापेन (astrapratāpena) - by the power of weapons; श्वेताश्वस्य (śvetāśvasya) - of Śvetāśva (Arjuna, 'he of white horses'); महात्मनः (mahātmanaḥ) - of the great-souled; ॥२-४३-१९॥ (॥2-43-19॥) -;]
(Having seen this entire earth, following the will of Yudhishthira, conquered by the power of weapons of Śvetāśva, the great-souled.)
Having seen that the entire earth, subject to Yudhishthira's will, had been conquered by the prowess of Arjuna (Śvetāśva), the great-souled one, (2-43-19)
तं च यज्ञं तथाभूतं दृष्ट्वा पार्थस्य मातुल। यथा शक्रस्य देवेषु तथाभूतं महाद्युते ॥२-४३-२०॥
taṃ ca yajñaṃ tathābhūtaṃ dṛṣṭvā pārthasya mātula। yathā śakrasya deveṣu tathābhūtaṃ mahādyute ॥2-43-20॥

(Him and the sacrifice thus-constituted having seen, of Pārtha the uncle, just as of Śakra among the gods, thus-constituted O greatly radiant.)
Seeing that sacrifice in such a form, the uncle of Pārtha, just as Śakra among the gods, O greatly radiant one, (reacted thus). (2-43-20)
अमर्षेण सुसम्पूर्णो दह्यमानो दिवानिशम्। शुचिशुक्रागमे काले शुष्ये तोयमिवाल्पकम् ॥२-४३-२१॥
amarṣeṇa susampūrṇo dahyamāno divāniśam। śuciśukrāgame kāle śuṣye toyamivālpakam ॥2-43-21॥
[अमर्षेण (amarṣeṇa) - by impatience; सुसम्पूर्णः (susampūrṇaḥ) - completely filled; दह्यमानः (dahyamānaḥ) - burning; दिवा-निशम् (divā-niśam) - day and night; शुचि-शुक्र-अगमे (śuci-śukra-agame) - in the time of clear and bright (seasonal) arrival; काले (kāle) - in the time; शुष्ये (śuṣye) - dries up; तोयम् (toyam) - water; इव (iva) - like; अल्पकम् (alpakam) - little;]
(Completely filled with impatience, burning day and night, like a little water dries up in the time of clear and bright season.)
Burning day and night, completely filled with impatience, he withered like a small amount of water dries up in the clear and bright season. (2-43-21)
पश्य सात्वतमुख्येन शिशुपालं निपातितम्। न च तत्र पुमानासीत्कश्चित्तस्य पदानुगः ॥२-४३-२२॥
paśya sātvata-mukhyena śiśupālaṃ nipātitam। na ca tatra pumān āsīt kaścit tasya padānugaḥ ॥2-43-22॥
[पश्य (paśya) - see; सात्वतमुख्येन (sātvata-mukhyena) - by the chief of the Sātvatas; शिशुपालं (śiśupālam) - Śiśupāla; निपातितम् (nipātitam) - struck down; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; तत्र (tatra) - there; पुमान् (pumān) - man; आसीत् (āsīt) - was; कश्चित् (kaścit) - any; तस्य (tasya) - his; पदानुगः (padānugaḥ) - follower;]
(See Śiśupāla struck down by the chief of the Sātvatas. And there was not any man there who was his follower.)
See how Śiśupāla was struck down by the chief of the Sātvatas, and there was not a single man there who followed him. (2-43-22)
दह्यमाना हि राजानः पाण्डवोत्थेन वह्निना। क्षान्तवन्तोऽपराधं तं को हि तं क्षन्तुमर्हति ॥२-४३-२३॥
dahyamānā hi rājānaḥ pāṇḍavotthena vahninā। kṣāntavanto'parādhaṃ taṃ ko hi taṃ kṣantum arhati॥2-43-23॥

The kings, scorched by the fire that arose from the Pāṇḍavas, have already forgiven that offense—who indeed is worthy to forgive it? (2-43-23)
वासुदेवेन तत्कर्म तथायुक्तं महत्कृतम्। सिद्धं च पाण्डवेयानां प्रतापेन महात्मनाम् ॥२-४३-२४॥
vāsudevena tatkarma tathāyuktaṃ mahatkṛtam। siddhaṃ ca pāṇḍaveyānāṃ pratāpena mahātmanām॥2-43-24॥
[वासुदेवेन (vāsudevena) - by Vāsudeva; तत् (tat) - that; कर्म (karma) - act; तथा (tathā) - thus; युक्तं (yuktaṃ) - performed; महत् (mahat) - great; कृतम् (kṛtam) - done; सिद्धं (siddhaṃ) - accomplished; च (ca) - and; पाण्डवेयानां (pāṇḍaveyānāṃ) - of the sons of Pāṇḍu; प्रतापेन (pratāpena) - by the prowess; महात्मनाम् (mahātmanām) - of the great-souled;]
(By Vāsudeva, that act thus performed, great, done, accomplished, and of the sons of Pāṇḍu, by the prowess of the great-souled.)
That great act was performed by Vāsudeva and accomplished by the prowess of the noble sons of Pāṇḍu. (2-43-24)
तथा हि रत्नान्यादाय विविधानि नृपा नृपम्। उपतिष्ठन्ति कौन्तेयं वैश्या इव करप्रदाः ॥२-४३-२५॥
tathā hi ratnāny ādāya vividhāni nṛpā nṛpam। upatiṣṭhanti kaunteyaṃ vaiśyā iva karapradāḥ ॥2-43-25॥
[तथा (tathā) - in that way; हि (hi) - indeed; रत्नानि (ratnāni) - jewels; आदाय (ādāya) - having taken; विविधानि (vividhāni) - various; नृपाः (nṛpāḥ) - kings; नृपम् (nṛpam) - king; उपतिष्ठन्ति (upatiṣṭhanti) - approach; कौन्तेयं (kaunteyam) - Kaunteya; वैश्याः (vaiśyāḥ) - merchants; इव (iva) - like; करप्रदाः (karapradāḥ) - tax-givers;]
(In that way indeed, having taken various jewels, kings approach the king Kaunteya like merchants who give taxes.)
Thus, indeed, kings bearing various jewels approach Kaunteya as merchants approach a king with their taxes. (2-43-25)
श्रियं तथाविधां दृष्ट्वा ज्वलन्तीमिव पाण्डवे। अमर्षवशमापन्नो दह्येऽहमतथोचितः ॥२-४३-२६॥
śriyaṃ tathāvidhāṃ dṛṣṭvā jvalantīm iva pāṇḍave| amarṣavaśam āpanno dahye'ham atathocitaḥ ॥2-43-26॥
[श्रियम् (śriyam) - prosperity; तथाविधाम् (tathāvidhām) - of such kind; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; ज्वलन्तीम् (jvalantīm) - blazing; इव (iva) - as if; पाण्डवे (pāṇḍave) - in the Pāṇḍava; अमर्षवशम् (amarṣavaśam) - under the sway of intolerance; आपन्नः (āpannaḥ) - fallen; दह्ये (dahye) - I am burning; अहम् (aham) - I; अतथोचितः (atathocitaḥ) - unworthy;]
(Having seen such prosperity blazing as if in the Pāṇḍava, fallen under the sway of intolerance, I, unworthy, am burning.)
Seeing such blazing prosperity in the Pāṇḍava, I, overcome by intolerance and acting unworthily, am burning with anguish. (2-43-26)
वह्निमेव प्रवेक्ष्यामि भक्षयिष्यामि वा विषम्। अपो वापि प्रवेक्ष्यामि न हि शक्ष्यामि जीवितुम् ॥२-४३-२७॥
vahnim eva pravekṣyāmi bhakṣayiṣyāmi vā viṣam। apo vāpi pravekṣyāmi na hi śakṣyāmi jīvitum ॥2-43-27॥
[वह्निम् (vahnim) - fire (accusative); एव (eva) - indeed; only; प्रवेक्ष्यामि (pravekṣyāmi) - I shall enter; भक्षयिष्यामि (bhakṣayiṣyāmi) - I shall eat; वा (vā) - or; विषम् (viṣam) - poison (accusative); अपः (apaḥ) - water (accusative plural); वा (vā) - or; अपि (api) - also; even; प्रवेक्ष्यामि (pravekṣyāmi) - I shall enter; न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; शक्ष्यामि (śakṣyāmi) - I shall be able; जीवितुम् (jīvitum) - to live;]
(I shall indeed enter fire, or I shall eat poison; or I shall even enter water; for I shall not indeed be able to live.)
I will enter fire, or consume poison, or even plunge into water; for I truly cannot go on living. (2-43-27)
को हि नाम पुमाँल्लोके मर्षयिष्यति सत्त्ववान्। सपत्नानृध्यतो दृष्ट्वा हानिमात्मन एव च ॥२-४३-२८॥
ko hi nāma pumāṁlloke marṣayiṣyati sattvavān। sapatnānṛdhyato dṛṣṭvā hānimātmana eva ca ॥2-43-28॥
[कः (kaḥ) - who; हि (hi) - indeed; नाम (nāma) - truly; पुमान् (pumān) - man; लोके (loke) - in the world; मर्षयिष्यति (marṣayiṣyati) - will endure; सत्त्ववान् (sattvavān) - possessing courage; सपत्नान् (sapatnān) - rivals; ऋध्यतः (ṛdhyataḥ) - prospering; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; हानिम् (hānim) - loss; आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - of oneself; एव (eva) - indeed; च (ca) - and;]
(Who indeed truly, man in the world, will endure, possessing courage, rivals prospering, having seen, loss of oneself indeed and.)
Who in this world, possessing courage, would truly endure seeing his rivals prosper and himself suffering loss? (2-43-28)
सोऽहं न स्त्री न चाप्यस्त्री न पुमान्नापुमानपि। योऽहं तां मर्षयाम्यद्य तादृशीं श्रियमागताम् ॥२-४३-२९॥
so'ham na strī na cāpyastrī na pumān nāpumāna'pi| yo'ham tāṃ marṣayāmyadya tādṛśīṃ śriyamāgatām ॥2-43-29॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; अहम् (aham) - I; न (na) - not; स्त्री (strī) - woman; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; अस्त्री (astrī) - not-woman; न (na) - not; पुमान् (pumān) - man; न (na) - not; अपुमान् (apumān) - not-man; अपि (api) - also; यः (yaḥ) - who; अहम् (aham) - I; ताम् (tām) - her; मर्षयामि (marṣayāmi) - endure; अद्य (adya) - today; तादृशीम् (tādṛśīm) - such; श्रियम् (śriyam) - prosperity; आगताम् (āgatām) - arrived;]
(He I not woman not and also not-woman not man not not-man also who I her endure today such prosperity arrived.)
I am neither a woman, nor not a woman, nor a man, nor not a man; I, who today endure her, such prosperity that has arrived. (2-43-29)
ईश्वरत्वं पृथिव्याश्च वसुमत्तां च तादृशीम्। यज्ञं च तादृशं दृष्ट्वा मादृशः को न सञ्ज्वरेत् ॥२-४३-३०॥
īśvaratvaṃ pṛthivyāś ca vasumattāṃ ca tādṛśīm। yajñaṃ ca tādṛśaṃ dṛṣṭvā mādṛśaḥ ko na sañjvaret ॥2-43-30॥
[ईश्वरत्वं (īśvaratvam) - lordship; पृथिव्याः (pṛthivyāḥ) - of the earth; च (ca) - and; वसुमत्तां (vasumattām) - richness; च (ca) - and; तादृशीम् (tādṛśīm) - such; यज्ञं (yajñam) - sacrifice; च (ca) - and; तादृशं (tādṛśam) - such; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; मादृशः (mādṛśaḥ) - like me; कः (kaḥ) - who; न (na) - not; सञ्ज्वरेत् (sañjvaret) - would not be enflamed;]
(Lordship, of the earth and richness and such; sacrifice and such, having seen, like me, who not would be enflamed;)
Who, having seen such lordship of the earth and such richness, and such a sacrifice, would not be enflamed like me? (2-43-30)
अशक्तश्चैक एवाहं तामाहर्तुं नृपश्रियम्। सहायांश्च न पश्यामि तेन मृत्युं विचिन्तये ॥२-४३-३१॥
aśaktaś caika evāhaṃ tām āhartuṃ nṛpaśriyam। sahāyāṃś ca na paśyāmi tena mṛtyuṃ vicintaye ॥2-43-31॥
[अशक्तः (aśaktaḥ) - incapable; powerless; च (ca) - and; एकः (ekaḥ) - alone; one; एव (eva) - indeed; only; अहम् (aham) - I; ताम् (tām) - that; her; आहर्तुम् (āhartum) - to bring; to recover; नृपश्रियम् (nṛpaśriyam) - king's prosperity; royal fortune; सहायान् (sahāyān) - helpers; allies; च (ca) - and; न (na) - not; पश्यामि (paśyāmi) - I see; तेन (tena) - therefore; by that; मृत्युम् (mṛtyum) - death; विचिन्तये (vicintaye) - I contemplate; I consider;]
(Incapable and alone indeed I am to bring that royal fortune; and I do not see helpers, therefore I contemplate death.)
I am powerless and alone to recover that royal fortune; I see no helpers, and therefore I consider death. (2-43-31)
दैवमेव परं मन्ये पौरुषं तु निरर्थकम्। दृष्ट्वा कुन्तीसुते शुभ्रां श्रियं तामाहृतां तथा ॥२-४३-३२॥
daivam eva paraṃ manye pauruṣaṃ tu nirarthakam। dṛṣṭvā kuntīsute śubhrāṃ śriyaṃ tām āhṛtāṃ tathā॥2-43-32॥
[दैवम् (daivam) - fate; divine will; एव (eva) - indeed; only; परम् (param) - supreme; highest; मन््ये (manye) - I think; पौरुषम् (pauruṣam) - human effort; तु (tu) - but; निरर्थकम् (nirarthakam) - fruitless; useless; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; कुन्ती-सुते (kuntī-sute) - Kuntī's son; शुभ्रां (śubhrāṃ) - radiant; bright; श्रियम् (śriyam) - prosperity; wealth; ताम् (tām) - that; आहृताम् (āhṛtām) - taken away; carried off; तथा (tathā) - thus; in this way;]
(I think fate alone is supreme; human effort, however, is fruitless. Having seen that radiant prosperity of Kuntī's son thus carried away.)
I believe that fate alone is supreme, and human effort is useless. Seeing how the radiant prosperity of Kuntī's son was thus taken away. (2-43-32)
कृतो यत्नो मया पूर्वं विनाशे तस्य सौबल। तच्च सर्वमतिक्रम्य स वृद्धोऽप्स्विव पङ्कजम् ॥२-४३-३३॥
kṛto yatno mayā pūrvaṃ vināśe tasya saubala। tacca sarvamatikramya sa vṛddho'psviva paṅkajam ॥2-43-33॥
[कृतः (kṛtaḥ) - done; यत्नः (yatnaḥ) - effort; मया (mayā) - by me; पूर्वम् (pūrvam) - previously; विनाशे (vināśe) - in the destruction; तस्य (tasya) - of him; सौबल (saubala) - of Saubala (son of Subala, i.e., Śakuni); तत् (tat) - that; च (ca) - and; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; अतिक्रम्य (atikramya) - having surpassed; सः (saḥ) - he; वृद्धः (vṛddhaḥ) - old; अप्सु (apsu) - in water; इव (iva) - like; पङ्कजम् (paṅkajam) - lotus;]
(The effort was made by me previously for the destruction of Saubala; and having surpassed all that, he, old, is like a lotus in water.)
I had previously made every effort to destroy Saubala; but surpassing all that, he, though aged, remains like a lotus in water. (2-43-33)
तेन दैवं परं मन्ये पौरुषं तु निरर्थकम्। धार्तराष्ट्रा हि हीयन्ते पार्था वर्धन्ति नित्यशः ॥२-४३-३४॥
tena daivaṃ paraṃ manye pauruṣaṃ tu nirarthakam। dhārtarāṣṭrā hi hīyante pārthā vardhanti nityaśaḥ ॥2-43-34॥
[तेन (tena) - by that; by him; दैवं (daivam) - divine will; fate; परं (param) - supreme; highest; मन्ये (manye) - I think; I consider; पौरुषं (pauruṣam) - human effort; manliness; तु (tu) - but; निरर्थकम् (nirarthakam) - useless; without purpose; धार्तराष्ट्राः (dhārtarāṣṭrāḥ) - sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra; हि (hi) - indeed; हीयन्ते (hīyante) - are diminished; are declining; पार्थाः (pārthāḥ) - sons of Pṛthā; Pāṇḍavas; वर्धन्ति (vardhanti) - are prospering; are increasing; नित्यशः (nityaśaḥ) - constantly; always;]
(By that, I consider fate as supreme; but human effort is useless. The sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra indeed are declining, the sons of Pṛthā are constantly prospering. (2-43-34))
Therefore, I consider fate to be supreme, and human effort to be useless. The sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra are indeed declining, while the sons of Pṛthā are always prospering. (2-43-34)
सोऽहं श्रियं च तां दृष्ट्वा सभां तां च तथाविधाम्। रक्षिभिश्चावहासं तं परितप्ये यथाग्निना ॥२-४३-३५॥
so'ham śriyaṃ ca tāṃ dṛṣṭvā sabhāṃ tāṃ ca tathāvidhām। rakṣibhiś cāvahāsaṃ taṃ paritapye yathāgninā ॥2-43-35॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; अहम् (aham) - I; श्रियम् (śriyam) - prosperity; च (ca) - and; ताम् (tām) - her; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; सभाम् (sabhām) - assembly; ताम् (tām) - that; च (ca) - and; तथाविधाम् (tathāvidhām) - such; रक्षिभिः (rakṣibhiḥ) - by the guards; च (ca) - and; अवहासम् (avahāsam) - mockery; तम् (tam) - that; परितप्ये (paritapye) - I am tormented; यथा (yathā) - as; अग्निना (agninā) - by fire;]
(He, I, prosperity and her, having seen, the assembly, that and such, by the guards and mockery, that, I am tormented, as by fire.)
Having seen that prosperity and that assembly, and her in such a state, and being mocked by the guards, I am tormented as if by fire. (2-43-35)
स मामभ्यनुजानीहि मातुलाद्य सुदुःखितम्। अमर्षं च समाविष्टं धृतराष्ट्रे निवेदय ॥२-४३-३६॥
sa mām abhyanujānīhi mātulādya suduḥkhitam। amarṣaṃ ca samāviṣṭaṃ dhṛtarāṣṭre nivedaya ॥2-43-36॥
[स (sa) - he; माम् (mām) - me; अभ्यनुजानीहि (abhyanujānīhi) - permit; मातुल (mātula) - uncle; आद्य (ādya) - O foremost; सुदुःखितम् (suduḥkhitam) - greatly distressed; अमर्षम् (amarṣam) - anger; च (ca) - and; समाविष्टम् (samāviṣṭam) - overcome; धृतराष्ट्रे (dhṛtarāṣṭre) - to Dhritarashtra; निवेदय (nivedaya) - convey;]
(He, permit me, O uncle, O foremost, greatly distressed. Anger and overcome, to Dhritarashtra convey.)
O uncle, please permit me, who am greatly distressed. Convey also to Dhritarashtra the anger that has overcome me. (2-43-36)
