duryodhana na te'marṣaḥ kāryaḥ prati yudhiṣṭhiram। bhāgadheyāni hi svāni pāṇḍavā bhuñjate sadā ॥2-44-1॥

अनेकैरभ्युपायैश्च त्वयारब्धाः पुरासकृत्। विमुक्ताश्च नरव्याघ्रा भागधेयपुरस्कृताः ॥२-४४-२॥
anekair abhyupāyaiś ca tvayā ārabdhāḥ purā asakṛt। vimuktāś ca naravyāghrā bhāgadheya-puraskṛtāḥ ॥2-44-2॥
[अनेकैः (anekaiḥ) - by many; अभ्युपायैः (abhyupāyaiḥ) - by means; च (ca) - and; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; आरब्धाः (ārabdhāḥ) - undertaken; पुरा (purā) - formerly; असकृत् (asakṛt) - repeatedly; विमुक्ताः (vimuktāḥ) - liberated; च (ca) - and; नरव्याघ्राः (naravyāghrāḥ) - tiger among men; भागधेय (bhāgadheya) - fortune; पुरस्कृताः (puraskṛtāḥ) - favored;]
(By many means and by you, undertakings were formerly and repeatedly made; and the tigers among men, favored by fortune, were liberated.)
By many means, you have repeatedly made efforts in the past; and the heroic men, favored by fortune, have been set free. (2-44-2)
तैर्लब्धा द्रौपदी भार्या द्रुपदश्च सुतैः सह। सहायः पृथिवीलाभे वासुदेवश्च वीर्यवान् ॥२-४४-३॥
tairlabdhā draupadī bhāryā drupadaśca sutaiḥ saha। sahāyaḥ pṛthivīlābhe vāsudevaśca vīryavān ॥2-44-3॥
[तैः (taiḥ) - by them; लब्धा (labdhā) - obtained; द्रौपदी (draupadī) - Draupadī; भार्या (bhāryā) - wife; द्रुपदः (drupadaḥ) - Drupada; च (ca) - and; सुतैः (sutaiḥ) - with sons; सह (saha) - together; सहायः (sahāyaḥ) - ally; पृथिवी (pṛthivī) - earth; लाभे (lābhe) - in obtaining; वासुदेवः (vāsudevaḥ) - Vāsudeva; च (ca) - and; वीर्यवान् (vīryavān) - mighty;]
(By them, Draupadī, the wife, was obtained; Drupada together with his sons, as an ally, in obtaining the earth, and Vāsudeva, the mighty one.)
Thus, Draupadī was won by them as their wife; Drupada and his sons became their allies in the conquest of the earth, and Vāsudeva, the mighty one, also supported them. (2-44-3)
लब्धश्च नाभिभूतोऽर्थः पित्र्योंऽशः पृथिवीपते। विवृद्धस्तेजसा तेषां तत्र का परिदेवना ॥२-४४-४॥
labdhaś ca nābhibhūto'rthaḥ pitryo'ṃśaḥ pṛthivīpate। vivṛddhas tejasā teṣāṃ tatra kā paridevanā ॥2-44-4॥
[लब्धः (labdhaḥ) - obtained; च (ca) - and; न (na) - not; अभिभूतः (abhibhūtaḥ) - overpowered; अर्थः (arthaḥ) - object; पित्र्यः (pitryaḥ) - ancestral; अंशः (aṃśaḥ) - share; पृथिवीपते (pṛthivīpate) - O lord of the earth; विवृद्धः (vivṛddhaḥ) - increased; तेजसा (tejasā) - by energy; तेषाम् (teṣām) - of them; तत्र (tatra) - there; का (kā) - what; परिदेवना (paridevanā) - lamentation;]
(Obtained and not overpowered is the object, the ancestral share, O lord of the earth; increased by energy of them there what lamentation?)
O lord of the earth, the ancestral share has been obtained and not overpowered; their energy has increased—what cause for lamentation is there? (2-44-4)
धनञ्जयेन गाण्डीवमक्षय्यौ च महेषुधी। लब्धान्यस्त्राणि दिव्यानि तर्पयित्वा हुताशनम् ॥२-४४-५॥
dhanañjayena gāṇḍīvamakṣayyau ca maheṣudhī। labdhānyastrāṇi divyāni tarpayitvā hutāśanam ॥2-44-5॥

(By Dhanañjaya, the Gāṇḍīva (bow), the two inexhaustible great archers, having obtained divine weapons, having satisfied the fire-god.)
Dhanañjaya (Arjuna), with the Gāṇḍīva bow and his companion, both being inexhaustible great archers, having obtained divine weapons, satisfied the fire-god. (2-44-5)
तेन कार्मुकमुख्येन बाहुवीर्येण चात्मनः। कृता वशे महीपालास्तत्र का परिदेवना ॥२-४४-६॥
tena kārmukamukhyena bāhuvīryeṇa cātmanaḥ। kṛtā vaśe mahīpālāstatra kā paridevanā ॥2-44-6॥
[तेन (tena) - by that; कार्मुकमुख्येन (kārmukamukhyena) - by the foremost bow; बाहुवीर्येण (bāhuvīryeṇa) - by the strength of the arm; च (ca) - and; आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - of himself; कृता (kṛtā) - made; वशे (vaśe) - under control; महीपालाः (mahīpālāḥ) - kings; तत्र (tatra) - there; का (kā) - what; परिदेवना (paridevanā) - lamentation;]
(By that foremost bow, by the strength of his own arm, the kings were made subject; there, what lamentation (is there)?)
With that foremost bow and his own arm's strength, he subdued the kings; so what cause for lamentation is there? (2-44-6)
अग्निदाहान्मयं चापि मोक्षयित्वा स दानवम्। सभां तां कारयामास सव्यसाची परन्तपः ॥२-४४-७॥
agnidāhān-mayaṃ cāpi mokṣayitvā sa dānavam। sabhāṃ tāṃ kārayāmāsa savyasācī parantapaḥ ॥2-44-7॥
[अग्निदाहात् (agnidāhāt) - from burning by fire; मयम् (mayam) - Maya; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; मोक्षयित्वा (mokṣayitvā) - having released; सः (saḥ) - he; दानवम् (dānavam) - the demon; सभाम् (sabhām) - assembly hall; ताम् (tām) - that; कारयामास (kārayāmāsa) - caused to be built; सव्यसाची (savyasācī) - Savyasachi (Arjuna); परन्तपः (parantapaḥ) - scorcher of foes;]
(Having released Maya from burning by fire, he (Arjuna), the scorcher of foes, also caused that demon to build that assembly hall.)
After freeing Maya from being burned by fire, Savyasachi (Arjuna), the scorcher of foes, had that demon construct the assembly hall. (2-44-7)
तेन चैव मयेनोक्ताः किङ्करा नाम राक्षसाः। वहन्ति तां सभां भीमास्तत्र का परिदेवना ॥२-४४-८॥
tena caiva mayenoktāḥ kiṅkarā nāma rākṣasāḥ। vahanti tāṃ sabhāṃ bhīmāstatra kā paridevanā ॥2-44-8॥
[तेन (tena) - by him; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; मयेन (mayena) - by Maya; उक्ताः (uktāḥ) - spoken; किङ्कराः (kiṅkarāḥ) - servants; नाम (nāma) - named; राक्षसाः (rākṣasāḥ) - rākṣasas; वहन्ति (vahanti) - carry; ताम् (tām) - that; सभाम् (sabhām) - assembly hall; भीमाः (bhīmāḥ) - terrible; तत्र (tatra) - there; का (kā) - what; परिदेवना (paridevanā) - lamentation;]
(By him and indeed by Maya, servants named rākṣasas, spoken of, terrible, carry that assembly hall there; what lamentation is there?)
Those servants called rākṣasas, spoken of by Maya and by him, terrible ones, carry that assembly hall there; what cause is there for lamentation? (2-44-8)
यच्चासहायतां राजन्नुक्तवानसि भारत। तन्मिथ्या भ्रातरो हीमे सहायास्ते महारथाः ॥२-४४-९॥
yaccāsahāyatāṃ rājannuktavānasi bhārata। tanmithyā bhrātaro hīme sahāyāste mahārathāḥ ॥2-44-9॥
[यत् (yat) - which; च (ca) - and; असहायताम् (asahāyatām) - helplessness; राजन् (rājan) - O king; उक्तवान् (uktavān) - you have said; असि (asi) - you are; भारत (bhārata) - descendant of Bharata; तत् (tat) - that; मिथ्या (mithyā) - false; भ्रातरः (bhrātaraḥ) - brothers; हि (hi) - indeed; इमे (ime) - these; सहायाः (sahāyāḥ) - helpers; ते (te) - your; महारथाः (mahārathāḥ) - great chariot-warriors;]
(And that helplessness which you have spoken of, O king, O Bhārata, that is false; for these brothers of yours are indeed your helpers, great chariot-warriors.)
O king, O descendant of Bharata, what you have said about being helpless is untrue; for these brothers of yours are indeed your helpers, and they are mighty chariot-warriors. (2-44-9)
द्रोणस्तव महेष्वासः सह पुत्रेण धीमता। सूतपुत्रश्च राधेयो गौतमश्च महारथः ॥२-४४-१०॥
droṇastava maheṣvāsaḥ saha putreṇa dhīmatā। sūtaputraśca rādheyo gautamaśca mahārathaḥ ॥2-44-10॥
[द्रोणः (droṇaḥ) - Droṇa; (name of a warrior; son of Bharadvāja); तव (tava) - your; (here, addressing Duryodhana); महेष्वासः (maheṣvāsaḥ) - great archer; (mahat + iṣu + āsa = great + arrow + possessor); सह (saha) - together with; पुत्रेण (putreṇa) - with (his) son; धीमता (dhīmatā) - wise; intelligent; सूतपुत्रः (sūtaputraḥ) - son of a charioteer; (Karna); च (ca) - and; राधेयः (rādheyaḥ) - Radheya; (another name for Karna, son of Radha); गौतमः (gautamaḥ) - Gautama; (Kripa, son of Gautama); च (ca) - and; महारथः (mahārathaḥ) - great chariot-warrior;]

अहं च सह सोदर्यैः सौमदत्तिश्च वीर्यवान्। एतैस्त्वं सहितः सर्वैर्जय कृत्स्नां वसुन्धराम् ॥२-४४-११॥
ahaṃ ca saha sodaryaiḥ saumadattiś ca vīryavān। etais tvaṃ sahitaḥ sarvair jaya kṛtsnāṃ vasundharām ॥2-44-11॥
[अहं (ahaṃ) - I; च (ca) - and; सह (saha) - together with; सोदर्यैः (sodaryaiḥ) - with (my) uterine brothers; सौमदत्तिः (saumadattiḥ) - Saumadatti; च (ca) - and; वीर्यवान् (vīryavān) - powerful; एतैः (etaiḥ) - with these; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; सहितः (sahitaḥ) - joined; सर्वैः (sarvaiḥ) - with all; जय (jaya) - conquer; कृत्स्नाम् (kṛtsnām) - entire; वसुन्धराम् (vasundharām) - earth;]
(I and (my) uterine brothers together, and Saumadatti, the powerful, with these you joined with all, conquer the entire earth.)
I, along with my uterine brothers and the mighty Saumadatti, together with all these, you, being united with them, conquer the whole earth. (2-44-11)

tvayā ca sahito rājann etaiś cānyair mahārathaiḥ। etān eva vijeṣyāmi yadi tvam anumanyase ॥2-44-12॥
[त्वया (tvayā) - by you; च (ca) - and; सहितः (sahitaḥ) - together; राजन् (rājan) - O king; एतैः (etaiḥ) - with these; च (ca) - and; अन्यैः (anyaiḥ) - with others; महारथैः (mahārathaiḥ) - with great chariot-warriors; एतान् (etān) - these; एव (eva) - indeed; विजेष्यामि (vijeṣyāmi) - I shall conquer; यदि (yadi) - if; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अनुमन्यसे (anumanyase) - approve;]
(By you and together, O king, with these and other great chariot-warriors, these indeed I shall conquer, if you approve.)
O king, if you approve, I shall conquer these (enemies) together with you and these other great chariot-warriors. (2-44-12)
एतेषु विजितेष्वद्य भविष्यति मही मम। सर्वे च पृथिवीपालाः सभा सा च महाधना ॥२-४४-१३॥
eteṣu vijiteṣv adya bhaviṣyati mahī mama। sarve ca pṛthivīpālāḥ sabhā sā ca mahādhanā ॥2-44-13॥
[एतेषु (eteṣu) - in these; विजितेषु (vijiteṣu) - having been conquered; अद्य (adya) - today; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will become; मही (mahī) - earth; मम (mama) - my; सर्वे (sarve) - all; च (ca) - and; पृथिवीपालाः (pṛthivīpālāḥ) - kings of the earth; सभा (sabhā) - assembly; सा (sā) - that; च (ca) - and; महाधना (mahādhanā) - greatly wealthy;]
(In these conquered (lands), today the earth will become mine. And all the kings of the earth, that assembly, and (it is) greatly wealthy.)
Today, with these lands conquered, the earth will become mine. All the kings of the earth, that assembly, and its great wealth (will be mine). (2-44-13)

नैते युधि बलाज्जेतुं शक्याः सुरगणैरपि। महारथा महेष्वासाः कृतास्त्रा युद्धदुर्मदाः ॥२-४४-१५॥
naite yudhi balājjetuṃ śakyāḥ suragaṇairapi. mahārathā maheṣvāsāḥ kṛtāstrā yuddhadurmadāḥ ॥2-44-15॥
[न (na) - not; एते (ete) - these; युधि (yudhi) - in battle; बलात् (balāt) - by force; जेतुम् (jetum) - to conquer; शक्याः (śakyāḥ) - possible; सुरगणैः (suragaṇaiḥ) - by hosts of gods; अपि (api) - even; महारथाः (mahārathāḥ) - great chariot-warriors; महेष्वासाः (maheṣvāsāḥ) - mighty bowmen; कृतास्त्राः (kṛtāstrāḥ) - masters of weapons; युद्धदुर्मदाः (yuddhadurmadāḥ) - arrogant in battle;]
(Not these in battle by force to conquer possible by hosts of gods even; great chariot-warriors, mighty bowmen, masters of weapons, arrogant in battle.)
Even the hosts of gods cannot conquer these great chariot-warriors, mighty bowmen, masters of weapons, and those arrogant in battle by force. (2-44-15)
अहं तु तद्विजानामि विजेतुं येन शक्यते। युधिष्ठिरं स्वयं राजंस्तन्निबोध जुषस्व च ॥२-४४-१६॥
ahaṃ tu tadvijānāmi vijetuṃ yena śakyate। yudhiṣṭhiraṃ svayaṃ rājaṃstannibodha juṣasva ca ॥2-44-16॥
[अहं (ahaṃ) - I; तु (tu) - but; तत् (tat) - that; विजानामि (vijānāmi) - know; विजेतुम् (vijetum) - to conquer; येन (yena) - by whom; शक्यते (śakyate) - is possible; युधिष्ठिरम् (yudhiṣṭhiram) - Yudhiṣṭhira; स्वयम् (svayam) - himself; राजन् (rājan) - O king; तत् (tat) - that; निबोध (nibodha) - know; जुषस्व (juṣasva) - accept; च (ca) - and;]
(I but that know to conquer by whom is possible; Yudhiṣṭhira himself O king that know accept and.)
But I know that by whom it is possible to conquer; O king, know and accept that it is Yudhiṣṭhira himself. (2-44-16)

apramādena suhṛdām anyeṣāṃ ca mahātmanām। yadi śakyā vijetuṃ te tan mamācakṣva mātula ॥2-44-17॥
[अप्रमादेन (apramādena) - by vigilance; सुहृदाम् (suhṛdām) - of friends; अन्येषाम् (anyeṣām) - of others; च (ca) - and; महात्मनाम् (mahātmanām) - of great souls; यदि (yadi) - if; शक्या (śakyā) - possible; विजेतुम् (vijetum) - to conquer; ते (te) - by you; तत् (tat) - that; मम (mama) - to me; आचक्ष्व (ācakṣva) - tell; मातुल (mātula) - O uncle;]
(By vigilance of friends and of others and of great souls, if it is possible to conquer them by you, that to me tell, O uncle.)
O uncle, if it is possible for you to conquer friends, others, and great souls by vigilance, then tell me that.

dyūtapriyaś ca kaunteyo na ca jānāti devitum। samāhūtaś ca rājendro na śakṣyati nivartitum ॥2-44-18॥
[द्यूतप्रियः (dyūtapriyaḥ) - fond of gambling; च (ca) - and; कौन्तेयः (kaunteyaḥ) - son of Kunti; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; जानाति (jānāti) - knows; देवितुम् (devitum) - how to play (the game); समाहूतः (samāhūtaḥ) - having been invited; च (ca) - and; राजेन्द्रः (rājendraḥ) - O king; न (na) - not; शक्ष्यति (śakṣyati) - will be able; निवर्तितुम् (nivartitum) - to withdraw;]
(Fond of gambling and the son of Kunti does not know how to play; having been invited, O king, he will not be able to withdraw.)
The son of Kunti is fond of gambling, but he does not know how to play; and once he has been invited, O king, he will not be able to withdraw. (2-44-18)
देवने कुशलश्चाहं न मेऽस्ति सदृशो भुवि। त्रिषु लोकेषु कौन्तेयं तं त्वं द्यूते समाह्वय ॥२-४४-१९॥
devane kuśalaś cāhaṃ na me 'sti sadṛśo bhuvi। triṣu lokeṣu kaunteyaṃ taṃ tvaṃ dyūte samāhvaya ॥2-44-19॥
[देवने (devane) - among the gods; कुशलः (kuśalaḥ) - skilled; च (ca) - and; अहम् (aham) - I; न (na) - not; मे (me) - to me; अस्ति (asti) - there is; सदृशः (sadṛśaḥ) - equal; भुवि (bhuvi) - on earth; त्रिषु (triṣu) - in the three; लोकेषु (lokeṣu) - worlds; कौन्तेयं (kaunteyam) - son of Kunti; तम् (tam) - him; त्वम् (tvam) - you; द्यूते (dyūte) - in dice (game); समाह्वय (samāhvaya) - summon; ॥२-४४-१९॥ (॥2-44-19॥) - (2-44-19);]
(Among the gods, skilled and I; not to me there is equal on earth; in the three worlds, the son of Kunti, him you in dice summon.)
Among the gods, I am skilled, and there is no one equal to me on earth; in the three worlds, summon that son of Kunti to the game of dice. (2-44-19)
तस्याक्षकुशलो राजन्नादास्येऽहमसंशयम्। राज्यं श्रियं च तां दीप्तां त्वदर्थं पुरुषर्षभ ॥२-४४-२०॥
tasyākṣakuśalo rājannādāsye'hamasaṃśayam। rājyaṃ śriyaṃ ca tāṃ dīptāṃ tvadarthaṃ puruṣarṣabha ॥2-44-20॥
