kathaṁ samabhavaddyūtaṁ bhrātṝṇāṁ tanmahātyayam। yatra tadvyasanaṁ prāptaṁ pāṇḍavairme pitāmahaiḥ ॥2-46-1॥

विस्तरेणैतदिच्छामि कथ्यमानं त्वया द्विज। मूलं ह्येतद्विनाशस्य पृथिव्या द्विजसत्तम ॥२-४६-३॥
vistareṇaitadicchāmi kathyamānaṃ tvayā dvija। mūlaṃ hyetadvināśasya pṛthivyā dvijasattama ॥2-46-3॥

एवमुक्तस्तदा राज्ञा व्यासशिष्यः प्रतापवान्। आचचक्षे यथावृत्तं तत्सर्वं सर्ववेदवित् ॥२-४६-४॥
evam-uktas-tadā rājñā vyāsaśiṣyaḥ pratāpavān। ācacakṣe yathāvṛttaṃ tatsarvaṃ sarvavedavit ॥2-46-4॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - spoken; तदा (tadā) - then; राज्ञा (rājñā) - by the king; व्यासशिष्यः (vyāsaśiṣyaḥ) - Vyāsa's disciple; प्रतापवान् (pratāpavān) - powerful; आचचक्षे (ācacakṣe) - related; यथा (yathā) - as; वृत्तम् (vṛttam) - happened; तत् (tat) - that; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; सर्ववेदवित् (sarvavedavit) - knower of all Vedas;]
(Thus spoken then by the king, Vyāsa's disciple, powerful, related as it happened, all that, the knower of all Vedas.)
Thus, when addressed by the king, the powerful disciple of Vyāsa, the knower of all the Vedas, related everything exactly as it had happened. (2-46-4)

विदुरस्य मतं ज्ञात्वा धृतराष्ट्रोऽम्बिकासुतः। दुर्योधनमिदं वाक्यमुवाच विजने पुनः ॥२-४६-६॥
vidurasya mataṃ jñātvā dhṛtarāṣṭro’mbikāsutaḥ। duryodhanam idaṃ vākyam uvāca vijane punaḥ ॥2-46-6॥

Knowing Vidura's opinion, Dhritarashtra, son of Ambika, again addressed these words to Duryodhana in private. (2-46-6)
अलं द्यूतेन गान्धारे विदुरो न प्रशंसति। न ह्यसौ सुमहाबुद्धिरहितं नो वदिष्यति ॥२-४६-७॥
alaṃ dyūtena gāndhāre viduro na praśaṃsati. na hyasau sumahābuddhirahitaṃ no vadiṣyati ॥2-46-7॥
[अलं (alaṃ) - enough; sufficient; द्यूतेन (dyūtena) - with gambling; by dice; गान्धारे (gāndhāre) - O Gandhari; (addressing Gandhari); विदुरः (viduraḥ) - Vidura; (the wise minister); न (na) - not; प्रशंसति (praśaṃsati) - praises; न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; असौ (asau) - he; सुमहाबुद्धि (sumahābuddhi) - of great intelligence; रहितं (rahitaṃ) - devoid of; नः (naḥ) - to us; वदिष्यति (vadiṣyati) - will say;]
(Enough with gambling, O Gandhari; Vidura does not praise (it). Indeed, he of great intelligence will not say anything devoid of sense to us.)
Enough of gambling, O Gandhari; Vidura does not approve of it. Indeed, that man of great wisdom will not say anything senseless to us. (2-46-7)
हितं हि परमं मन्ये विदुरो यत्प्रभाषते। क्रियतां पुत्र तत्सर्वमेतन्मन्ये हितं तव ॥२-४६-८॥
hitaṃ hi paramaṃ manye viduro yatprabhāṣate। kriyatāṃ putra tatsarvametanmanye hitaṃ tava ॥2-46-8॥
[हितं (hitaṃ) - beneficial; हि (hi) - indeed; परमं (paramaṃ) - supreme; मnye (manye) - I think; विदुरः (viduraḥ) - Vidura; यत् (yat) - which; प्रभाषते (prabhāṣate) - speaks; क्रियताम् (kriyatām) - let it be done; पुत्र (putra) - O son; तत् (tat) - that; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; एतत् (etat) - this; मnye (manye) - I think; हितं (hitaṃ) - beneficial; तव (tava) - for you;]
(Beneficial indeed supreme I think Vidura which speaks. Let it be done O son that all this I think beneficial for you.)
I truly believe that whatever Vidura says is of the highest benefit. O son, let all of that be done; I think all this is for your good. (2-46-8)
देवर्षिर्वासवगुरुर्देवराजाय धीमते। यत्प्राह शास्त्रं भगवान्बृहस्पतिरुदारधीः ॥२-४६-९॥
devarṣir vāsavagurur devarājāya dhīmate। yat prāha śāstraṃ bhagavān bṛhaspatir udāradhīḥ ॥2-46-9॥
[देवर्षि (devarṣi) - divine sage; वासवगुरु (vāsavaguru) - preceptor of Vāsava (Indra); देवराजाय (devarājāya) - to the king of gods; धीमते (dhīmate) - to the wise one; यत् (yat) - which; प्राह (prāha) - spoke; शास्त्रं (śāstram) - treatise; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the venerable; बृहस्पति (bṛhaspati) - Bṛhaspati; उदारधीः (udāradhīḥ) - of noble intellect;]
(The divine sage, the preceptor of Vāsava, to the wise king of gods, that which the venerable Bṛhaspati of noble intellect spoke as a treatise.)

तद्वेद विदुरः सर्वं सरहस्यं महाकविः। स्थितश्च वचने तस्य सदाहमपि पुत्रक ॥२-४६-१०॥
tadveda viduraḥ sarvaṃ sarahasyaṃ mahākaviḥ। sthitaśca vacane tasya sadāhamapi putraka ॥2-46-10॥
[तत् (tat) - that; वेद (veda) - knows; विदुरः (viduraḥ) - Vidura; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; स-रहस्यं (sa-rahasyaṃ) - with secret; महाकविः (mahākaviḥ) - great sage; स्थितः (sthitaḥ) - established; च (ca) - and; वचने (vacane) - in speech; तस्य (tasya) - his; सदा (sadā) - always; अहम् (aham) - I; अपि (api) - also; पुत्रक (putraka) - O son;]
(That knows Vidura, all with secret, great sage; established and in speech his, always I also, O son.)
O son, Vidura, the great sage, knows all the secrets; I am always established in his words as well. (2-46-10)
विदुरो वापि मेधावी कुरूणां प्रवरो मतः। उद्धवो वा महाबुद्धिर्वृष्णीनामर्चितो नृप ॥२-४६-११॥
viduro vāpi medhāvī kurūṇāṃ pravaro mataḥ। uddhavo vā mahābuddhirvṛṣṇīnāmarcito nṛpa ॥2-46-11॥
[विदुरः (viduraḥ) - Vidura; वा (vā) - or; अपि (api) - also; मेधावी (medhāvī) - wise; कुरूणाम् (kurūṇām) - of the Kurus; प्रवरः (pravaraḥ) - the foremost; मतः (mataḥ) - regarded; उद्धवः (uddhavaḥ) - Uddhava; वा (vā) - or; महाबुद्धिः (mahābuddhiḥ) - great intellect; वृष्णीनाम् (vṛṣṇīnām) - of the Vṛṣṇis; अर्चितः (arcitaḥ) - honored; नृप (nṛpa) - O king;]
(Vidura also, wise, is regarded as the foremost of the Kurus; or Uddhava, of great intellect, is honored among the Vṛṣṇis, O king.)

द्यूतेन तदलं पुत्र द्यूते भेदो हि दृश्यते। भेदे विनाशो राज्यस्य तत्पुत्र परिवर्जय ॥२-४६-१२॥
dyūtena tad alaṃ putra dyūte bhedo hi dṛśyate। bhede vināśo rājyasya tat putra parivarjaya ॥2-46-12॥
[द्यूतेन (dyūtena) - by gambling; तत् (tat) - that; अलम् (alam) - enough; पुत्र (putra) - O son; द्यूते (dyūte) - in gambling; भेदः (bhedaḥ) - division; हि (hi) - indeed; दृश्यते (dṛśyate) - is seen; भेदे (bhede) - in division; विनाशः (vināśaḥ) - destruction; राज्यस्य (rājyasya) - of the kingdom; तत् (tat) - therefore; पुत्र (putra) - O son; परिवर्जय (parivarjaya) - avoid;]
(By gambling, that is enough, O son; in gambling, division indeed is seen; in division, destruction of the kingdom; therefore, O son, avoid (it).)
O son, that is enough with gambling; division is indeed seen in gambling, and in division lies the destruction of the kingdom; therefore, O son, avoid it. (2-46-12)
पित्रा मात्रा च पुत्रस्य यद्वै कार्यं परं स्मृतम्। प्राप्तस्त्वमसि तत्तात पितृपैतामहं पदम् ॥२-४६-१३॥
pitrā mātrā ca putrasya yad vai kāryaṃ paraṃ smṛtam। prāptas tvam asi tat tāta pitṛpaitāmahaṃ padam ॥2-46-13॥
[पित्रा (pitrā) - by the father; मात्रा (mātrā) - by the mother; च (ca) - and; पुत्रस्य (putrasya) - of the son; यत् (yat) - which; वै (vai) - indeed; कार्यं (kāryam) - duty; परं (param) - supreme; स्मृतम् (smṛtam) - is considered; प्राप्तः (prāptaḥ) - attained; त्वम् (tvam) - you; असि (asi) - are; तत् (tat) - that; तात (tāta) - O dear one; पितृपैतामहं (pitṛpaitāmaham) - ancestral (of father and grandfather); पदम् (padam) - position;]
(By the father, by the mother, and of the son, that which indeed is considered the supreme duty; you have attained that, O dear one, the ancestral position (of father and grandfather).)
That which is considered the highest duty by the father, mother, and son, you have now attained, O dear one—the ancestral position (of your forefathers). (2-46-13)
अधीतवान्कृती शास्त्रे लालितः सततं गृहे। भ्रातृज्येष्ठः स्थितो राज्ये विन्दसे किं न शोभनम् ॥२-४६-१४॥
adhītavānkṛtī śāstre lālitaḥ satataṃ gṛhe। bhrātṛjyeṣṭhaḥ sthito rājye vindase kiṃ na śobhanam ॥2-46-14॥
[अधीतवान् (adhītavān) - one who has studied; (from धा dhā + अति ati + क्तवत् ktavat suffix); कृती (kṛtī) - one who has accomplished; (from कृ kṛ + तिन् tin suffix); शास्त्रे (śāstre) - in the śāstra; (treatise, scripture); लालितः (lālitaḥ) - cherished; (from लल् lal + क्त kta suffix); सततम् (satatam) - always; (continuously); गृहे (gṛhe) - in the house; (home); भ्रातृज्येष्ठः (bhrātṛjyeṣṭhaḥ) - elder among brothers; (from भ्रातृ bhrātṛ + ज्येष्ठ jyeṣṭha); स्थितः (sthitaḥ) - established; (from स्था sthā + क्त kta suffix); राज्ये (rājye) - in the kingdom; (realm); विन्दसे (vindase) - you obtain; (from विद् vid + आत्मनेपद atmanepada); किं (kiṃ) - what; (interrogative); न (na) - not; (negation); शोभनम् (śobhanam) - auspicious; (good, beautiful);]
(One who has studied, accomplished in the śāstra, cherished always at home, elder among brothers, established in the kingdom, you obtain what not auspicious?)
You, who have studied and accomplished the śāstra, are cherished always at home, are the eldest among brothers, and are established in the kingdom—what auspicious thing do you not obtain? (2-46-14)
पृथग्जनैरलभ्यं यद्भोजनाच्छादनं परम्। तत्प्राप्तोऽसि महाबाहो कस्माच्छोचसि पुत्रक ॥२-४६-१५॥
pṛthagjanairalabhyaṃ yad bhojanācchādanaṃ param। tatprāpto'si mahābāho kasmācchocasi putraka ॥2-46-15॥
[पृथग्जनैः (pṛthagjanaiḥ) - by ordinary people; अलभ्यम् (alabhyam) - not attainable; यत् (yat) - which; भोजन (bhojana) - food; आच्छादनम् (ācchādanam) - covering; परम् (param) - supreme; तत् (tat) - that; प्राप्तः (prāptaḥ) - obtained; असि (asi) - you are; महाबाहो (mahābāho) - O mighty-armed; कस्मात् (kasmāt) - why; शोचसि (śocasi) - do you grieve; पुत्रक (putraka) - O son;]
(That supreme food and covering which is not attainable by ordinary people, you have obtained, O mighty-armed. Why do you grieve, O son?)
O mighty-armed one, you have attained that supreme food and covering which is not attainable by ordinary people. Why do you grieve, O son? (2-46-15)
स्फीतं राष्ट्रं महाबाहो पितृपैतामहं महत्। नित्यमाज्ञापयन्भासि दिवि देवेश्वरो यथा ॥२-४६-१६॥
sphītaṃ rāṣṭraṃ mahābāho pitṛpaitāmahaṃ mahat। nityamājñāpayanbhāsi divi deveśvaro yathā ॥2-46-16॥
[स्फीतम् (sphītam) - prosperous; राष्ट्रम् (rāṣṭram) - kingdom; महाबाहो (mahābāho) - O mighty-armed; पितृपैतामहम् (pitṛpaitāmaham) - inherited from father and grandfather; महत् (mahat) - great; नित्यम् (nityam) - always; आज्ञापयन् (ājñāpayan) - commanding; भासि (bhāsi) - you shine; दिवि (divi) - in heaven; देवेश्वरः (deveśvaraḥ) - the lord of the gods; यथा (yathā) - as;]
(A prosperous kingdom, O mighty-armed, great and inherited from father and grandfather; always commanding, you shine in heaven as the lord of the gods.)
O mighty-armed one, you shine with the greatness of a prosperous kingdom inherited from your forefathers, always commanding like the lord of the gods in heaven. (2-46-16)
तस्य ते विदितप्रज्ञ शोकमूलमिदं कथम्। समुत्थितं दुःखतरं तन्मे शंसितुमर्हसि ॥२-४६-१७॥
tasya te viditaprajña śokamūlam idaṃ katham। samutthitaṃ duḥkhataraṃ tan me śaṃsitum arhasi ॥2-46-17॥
[तस्य (tasya) - of him; ते (te) - to you; विदितप्रज्ञ (viditaprajña) - one whose wisdom is known; शोकमूलम् (śokamūlam) - rooted in sorrow; इदं (idaṃ) - this; कथम् (katham) - how; समुत्थितम् (samutthitam) - arisen; दुःखतरम् (duḥkhataraṃ) - greater suffering; तत् (tat) - that; मे (me) - to me; शंसितुम् (śaṃsitum) - to tell; अर्हसि (arhasi) - you ought;]
(Of him, to you, one whose wisdom is known, rooted in sorrow, this, how, arisen, greater suffering, that, to me, to tell, you ought.)
O one whose wisdom is known, how has this sorrow-rooted and greater suffering arisen for him? You ought to tell me that. (2-46-17)
दुर्योधन उवाच॥

अश्नाम्याच्छादयामीति प्रपश्यन्पापपूरुषः। नामर्षं कुरुते यस्तु पुरुषः सोऽधमः स्मृतः ॥२-४६-१८॥
aśnāmyācchādayāmīti prapaśyan pāpapūruṣaḥ। nāmarṣaṃ kurute yastu puruṣaḥ so'dhamaḥ smṛtaḥ ॥2-46-18॥
[अश्नामि (aśnāmi) - I eat; आच्छादयामि (ācchādayāmi) - I cover; इति (iti) - thus; प्रपश्यन् (prapaśyan) - perceiving; पापपूरुषः (pāpapūruṣaḥ) - wicked man; नामर्षम् (nāmarṣam) - not bearing; कुरुते (kurute) - does; यः (yaḥ) - who; तु (tu) - but; पुरुषः (puruṣaḥ) - man; सः (saḥ) - he; अधमः (adhamaḥ) - lowest; स्मृतः (smṛtaḥ) - is considered;]
(The wicked man, perceiving (thinking) 'I eat, I cover (myself),' does not bear (is intolerant); but the man who does so is considered the lowest.)
A wicked man, thinking 'I eat, I clothe myself,' is intolerant; but the man who acts thus is regarded as the lowest. (2-46-18)
न मां प्रीणाति राजेन्द्र लक्ष्मीः साधारणा विभो। ज्वलितामिव कौन्तेये श्रियं दृष्ट्वा च विव्यथे ॥२-४६-१९॥
na māṃ prīṇāti rājendra lakṣmīḥ sādhāraṇā vibho। jvalitām iva kaunteye śriyaṃ dṛṣṭvā ca vivyathe ॥2-46-19॥
[न (na) - not; माम् (mām) - me; प्रीणाति (prīṇāti) - pleases; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king; लक्ष्मीः (lakṣmīḥ) - fortune; साधारणा (sādhāraṇā) - common; विभो (vibho) - O lord; ज्वलिताम् (jvalitām) - blazing; इव (iva) - like; कौन्तेये (kaunteye) - in the son of Kunti; श्रियम् (śriyam) - prosperity; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; च (ca) - and; विव्यथे (vivyathe) - was agitated;]
(Not me pleases, O king, fortune common, O lord; blazing like in the son of Kunti, prosperity having seen and was agitated.)
O king, common fortune does not please me, O lord; seeing the blazing prosperity in the son of Kunti, I was agitated. (2-46-19)
सर्वां हि पृथिवीं दृष्ट्वा युधिष्ठिरवशानुगाम्। स्थिरोऽस्मि योऽहं जीवामि दुःखादेतद्ब्रवीमि ते ॥२-४६-२०॥
sarvāṃ hi pṛthivīṃ dṛṣṭvā yudhiṣṭhiravaśānugām। sthiro'smi yo'haṃ jīvāmi duḥkhādetadbravīmi te ॥2-46-20॥
[सर्वाम् (sarvām) - all; हि (hi) - indeed; पृथिवीम् (pṛthivīm) - earth; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; युधिष्ठिरवशानुगाम् (yudhiṣṭhira-vaśa-anugām) - following the will of Yudhishthira; स्थिरः (sthiraḥ) - firm; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; यः (yaḥ) - who; अहम् (aham) - I; जीवामि (jīvāmi) - live; दुःखात् (duḥkhāt) - from sorrow; एतत् (etat) - this; ब्रवीमि (bravīmi) - I say; ते (te) - to you;]
(Having seen all the earth indeed following the will of Yudhishthira, I am firm—who am I that I live? From sorrow, this I say to you.)
Having seen that the entire earth is indeed under Yudhishthira's control, I remain steadfast. Who am I, that I still live? It is out of sorrow that I say this to you. (2-46-20)
आवर्जिता इवाभान्ति निघ्नाश्चैत्रकिकौकुराः। कारस्करा लोहजङ्घा युधिष्ठिरनिवेशने ॥२-४६-२१॥

हिमवत्सागरानूपाः सर्वरत्नाकरास्तथा। अन्त्याः सर्वे पर्युदस्ता युधिष्ठिरनिवेशने ॥२-४६-२२॥

(Himalaya, ocean, marshlands, all treasure-houses likewise; all outcastes were excluded in the residence of Yudhishthira.)
In the residence of Yudhishthira, all outcastes were excluded, just as the Himalayas, oceans, marshlands, and all treasure-houses were kept away. (2-46-22)
ज्येष्ठोऽयमिति मां मत्वा श्रेष्ठश्चेति विशां पते। युधिष्ठिरेण सत्कृत्य युक्तो रत्नपरिग्रहे ॥२-४६-२३॥
jyeṣṭho'ayamiti māṃ matvā śreṣṭhaśceti viśāṃ pate। yudhiṣṭhireṇa satkṛtya yukto ratnaparigrahe ॥2-46-23॥

(Having considered me as 'this is the eldest' and 'this is the excellent one', O lord of men, having been honored by Yudhiṣṭhira, I was engaged in the receiving of jewels.)
O lord of men, Yudhiṣṭhira, having honored me as the eldest and the most excellent, engaged me in the receiving of jewels. (2-46-23)
उपस्थितानां रत्नानां श्रेष्ठानामर्घहारिणाम्। नादृश्यत परः प्रान्तो नापरस्तत्र भारत ॥२-४६-२४॥
upasthitānāṃ ratnānāṃ śreṣṭhānām arghahāriṇām। nādṛśyata paraḥ prānto nāparas tatra bhārata ॥2-46-24॥

(Of those present, of jewels, of the best, of those who bring offerings, not was seen another end, nor other there, O Bhārata.)
O Bhārata, among the best jewels and those who brought offerings present there, no other end was seen, nor was there any other (limit) there. (2-46-24)
न मे हस्तः समभवद्वसु तत्प्रतिगृह्णतः। प्रातिष्ठन्त मयि श्रान्ते गृह्य दूराहृतं वसु ॥२-४६-२५॥
na me hastaḥ samabhavadvasu tatpratigṛhṇataḥ। prātiṣṭhanta mayi śrānte gṛhya dūrāhṛtaṃ vasu ॥2-46-25॥
[न (na) - not; मे (me) - my; हस्तः (hastaḥ) - hand; समभवत् (samabhavat) - became available; वसु (vasu) - wealth; तत् (tat) - that; प्रतिगृह्णतः (pratigṛhṇataḥ) - while accepting; प्रातिष्ठन्त (prātiṣṭhanta) - departed; मयि (mayi) - when I; श्रान्ते (śrānte) - was tired; गृह्य (gṛhya) - having taken; दूराहृतं (dūrāhṛtaṃ) - brought from afar; वसु (vasu) - wealth;]
(Not my hand became available for the wealth while accepting that. They departed when I, being tired, having taken the wealth brought from afar.)
My hand was not available to accept that wealth. When I, exhausted, had taken the wealth brought from afar, they departed. (2-46-25)
कृतां बिन्दुसरोरत्नैर्मयेन स्फाटिकच्छदाम्। अपश्यं नलिनीं पूर्णामुदकस्येव भारत ॥२-४६-२६॥
kṛtāṃ bindu-saro-ratnaiḥ mayena sphāṭika-cchadām। apaśyaṃ nalinīṃ pūrṇām udakasyeva bhārata ॥2-46-26॥
[कृताम् (kṛtām) - made; बिन्दु (bindu) - drop; सरः (saraḥ) - lake; रत्नैः (ratnaiḥ) - with jewels; मयेन (mayena) - by Maya; स्फाटिकच्छदाम् (sphāṭika-cchadām) - with crystal covering; अपश्यम् (apaśyam) - I saw; नलिनीम् (nalinīm) - lotus-pond; पूर्णाम् (pūrṇām) - full; उदकस्य (udakasya) - of water; इव (iva) - like; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(I saw a lotus-pond made by Maya, covered with crystal, filled with drops, with jewels, like a lake full of water, O Bhārata.)
O Bhārata, I saw a lotus-pond created by Maya, adorned with jewels and covered with crystal, appearing as if it were a lake completely filled with water. (2-46-26)
वस्त्रमुत्कर्षति मयि प्राहसत्स वृकोदरः। शत्रोरृद्धिविशेषेण विमूढं रत्नवर्जितम् ॥२-४६-२७॥
vastram utkarṣati mayi prāhasat sa vṛkodaraḥ। śatroḥ ṛddhi-viśeṣeṇa vimūḍhaṃ ratna-varjitam ॥2-46-27॥
[वस्त्रम् (vastram) - cloth; उत्कर्षति (utkarṣati) - pulls up; मयि (mayi) - on me; प्राहसत् (prāhasat) - laughed; सः (saḥ) - he; वृकोदरः (vṛkodaraḥ) - Vṛkodara (Bhīma); शत्रोः (śatroḥ) - of the enemy; ऋद्धि (ṛddhi) - prosperity; विशेषेण (viśeṣeṇa) - with distinction; विमूढम् (vimūḍham) - deluded; रत्न (ratna) - jewel; वर्जितम् (varjitam) - deprived;]
(Cloth pulls up on me, he laughed, that Vṛkodara; of the enemy, with prosperity's distinction, deluded, deprived of jewel.)
Vṛkodara (Bhīma) laughed at me as I pulled up the cloth; the enemy, deluded by the special prosperity, was deprived of the jewel. (2-46-27)
तत्र स्म यदि शक्तः स्यां पातयेयं वृकोदरम्। सपत्नेनावहासो हि स मां दहति भारत ॥२-४६-२८॥
tatra sma yadi śaktaḥ syāṃ pātayeyam vṛkodaram। sapatnenāvahāso hi sa māṃ dahati bhārata ॥2-46-28॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; स्म (sma) - indeed; यदि (yadi) - if; शक्तः (śaktaḥ) - capable; स्याम् (syām) - I might be; पातयेयम् (pātayeyam) - I would cause to fall; वृकोदरम् (vṛkodaram) - Vṛkodara (Bhīma); सपत्नेन (sapatnena) - by a rival; अवहासः (avahāsaḥ) - mockery; हि (hi) - indeed; सः (saḥ) - that; माम् (mām) - me; दहति (dahati) - burns; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(There indeed if capable I might be, I would cause Vṛkodara to fall. By a rival, mockery indeed that me burns, O Bhārata.)
O Bhārata, if I were capable there, I would have caused Vṛkodara (Bhīma) to fall. But the mockery by a rival truly burns me.
पुनश्च तादृशीमेव वापीं जलजशालिनीम्। मत्वा शिलासमां तोये पतितोऽस्मि नराधिप ॥२-४६-२९॥
punaśca tādṛśīmeva vāpīṃ jalajaśālinīm। matvā śilāsamāṃ toye patito'smi narādhipa ॥2-46-29॥
[पुनः (punaḥ) - again; च (ca) - and; तादृशीम् (tādṛśīm) - such; एव (eva) - indeed; वापीं (vāpīm) - pond; जलजशालिनीम् (jalajaśālinīm) - filled with lotuses; मत्वा (matvā) - having considered; शिलासमाम् (śilāsamām) - like a stone; तोये (toye) - in water; पतितः (patitaḥ) - fallen; अस्मि (asmi) - am; नराधिप (narādhipa) - O king;]
(Again and indeed, having considered such a pond filled with lotuses to be like a stone, I have fallen in the water, O king.)
O king, once again, thinking that such a lotus-filled pond was solid like stone, I fell into the water. (2-46-29)
तत्र मां प्राहसत्कृष्णः पार्थेन सह सस्वनम्। द्रौपदी च सह स्त्रीभिर्व्यथयन्ती मनो मम ॥२-४६-३०॥
tatra māṃ prāhasat kṛṣṇaḥ pārthena saha sasvanam। draupadī ca saha strībhiḥ vyathayantī mano mama ॥2-46-30॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; माम् (mām) - me; प्राहसत् (prāhasat) - laughed; कृष्णः (kṛṣṇaḥ) - Kṛṣṇa; पार्थेन (pārthena) - with Pārtha; सह (saha) - together with; सस्वनम् (sasvanam) - aloud; द्रौपदी (draupadī) - Draupadī; च (ca) - and; सह (saha) - together with; स्त्रीभिः (strībhiḥ) - with women; व्यथयन्ती (vyathayantī) - distressing; मनो (mano) - the mind; मम (mama) - my;]
(There Kṛṣṇa laughed at me aloud together with Pārtha; and Draupadī, together with the women, was distressing my mind.)
There, Kṛṣṇa laughed aloud at me along with Pārtha; and Draupadī, together with the women, tormented my mind. (2-46-30)
क्लिन्नवस्त्रस्य च जले किङ्करा राजचोदिताः। ददुर्वासांसि मेऽन्यानि तच्च दुःखतरं मम ॥२-४६-३१॥
klinnavastrasya ca jale kiṅkarā rājacoditāḥ। dadurvāsāṃsi me'nyāni tacca duḥkhataraṃ mama ॥2-46-31॥
[क्लिन्नवस्त्रस्य (klinnavastrasya) - of the one with wet clothes; च (ca) - and; जले (jale) - in water; किङ्कराः (kiṅkarāḥ) - servants; राजचोदिताः (rājacoditāḥ) - commanded by the king; ददुः (daduḥ) - gave; वासांसि (vāsāṃsi) - clothes; मे (me) - to me; अन्यानि (anyāni) - other; तत् (tat) - that; च (ca) - and; दुःखतरम् (duḥkhataram) - more painful; मम (mama) - to me;]
(Of the one with wet clothes and in water, the servants commanded by the king gave other clothes to me, and that was more painful to me.)
The king's servants, seeing me with wet clothes in the water, gave me other garments as ordered by the king, but that was even more painful for me. (2-46-31)
प्रलम्भं च शृणुष्वान्यं गदतो मे नराधिप। अद्वारेण विनिर्गच्छन्द्वारसंस्थानरूपिणा ॥ अभिहत्य शिलां भूयो ललाटेनास्मि विक्षतः ॥२-४६-३२॥
pralambhaṃ ca śṛṇuṣvānyaṃ gadato me narādhipa | advāreṇa vinirgacchan dvārasaṃsthānarūpiṇā || abhihatya śilāṃ bhūyo lalāṭenāsmi vikṣataḥ ||2-46-32||
[प्रलम्भम् (pralambham) - deceit; च (ca) - and; शृणुष्व (śṛṇuṣva) - listen; अन्यं (anyaṃ) - another; गदतः (gadataḥ) - speaking; मे (me) - my; नराधिप (narādhipa) - O king; अद्वारेण (advāreṇa) - by a side door; विनिर्गच्छन् (vinirgacchan) - going out; द्वारसंस्थानरूपिणा (dvārasaṃsthānarūpiṇā) - in the form of a door-keeper; अभिहत्य (abhihatya) - having struck; शिलाम् (śilām) - a stone; भूयः (bhūyaḥ) - again; ललाटेन (lalāṭena) - with the forehead; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; विक्षतः (vikṣataḥ) - wounded;]
(And listen to another deceit, O king, as I speak. Going out by a side door in the form of a door-keeper, having struck a stone again with my forehead, I am wounded.)
O king, listen as I tell you of another deceit. Disguised as a door-keeper, I went out by a side door, and, having struck a stone again with my forehead, I am wounded. (2-46-32)
तत्र मां यमजौ दूरादालोक्य ललितौ किल। बाहुभिः परिगृह्णीतां शोचन्तौ सहितावुभौ ॥२-४६-३३॥
tatra māṃ yamajau dūrād ālokya lalitau kila। bāhubhiḥ parigṛhṇītāṃ śocantau sahitāv ubhau ॥2-46-33॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; माम् (mām) - me; यमजौ (yamajau) - the two sons of Yama (i.e., Yama's twins, referring to the Aśvin twins); दूरात् (dūrāt) - from afar; आलोक्य (ālokya) - having seen; ललितौ (lalitau) - graceful (dual); किल (kila) - indeed; बाहुभिः (bāhubhiḥ) - with (their) arms; परिगृह्णीताम् (parigṛhṇītām) - they embraced (dual); शोचन्तौ (śocantau) - lamenting (dual); सहितौ (sahitau) - together (dual); उभौ (ubhau) - both (dual);]
(There, me, the two sons of Yama, from afar, having seen, graceful, indeed, with (their) arms, they embraced, lamenting, together, both.)
There, the two graceful sons of Yama, having seen me from afar, indeed, both together, lamenting, embraced me with their arms. (2-46-33)
उवाच सहदेवस्तु तत्र मां विस्मयन्निव। इदं द्वारमितो गच्छ राजन्निति पुनः पुनः ॥२-४६-३४॥
uvāca sahadevastu tatra māṃ vismayanniva। idaṃ dvāramito gaccha rājanniti punaḥ punaḥ ॥2-46-34॥
[उवाच (uvāca) - said; सहदेवः (sahadevaḥ) - Sahadeva; तु (tu) - but; तत्र (tatra) - there; माम् (mām) - me; विस्मयन् (vismayan) - amazed; इव (iva) - as if; इदं (idaṃ) - this; द्वारम् (dvāram) - door; इतः (itaḥ) - from here; गच्छ (gaccha) - go; राजन् (rājan) - O king; इति (iti) - thus; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; पुनः (punaḥ) - again;]
(Sahadeva but said there to me, as if amazed: "This door, from here go, O king," thus again and again.)
But Sahadeva, as if amazed, said to me again and again there: "O king, go from here through this door." (2-46-34)
नामधेयानि रत्नानां पुरस्तान्न श्रुतानि मे। यानि दृष्टानि मे तस्यां मनस्तपति तच्च मे ॥२-४६-३५॥
nāmadheyāni ratnānāṃ purastān na śrutāni me। yāni dṛṣṭāni me tasyāṃ manas tapati tac ca me॥2-46-35॥
[नामधेयानि (nāmadheyāni) - names; रत्नानाम् (ratnānām) - of jewels; पुरस्तात् (purastāt) - before; न (na) - not; श्रुतानि (śrutāni) - heard; मे (me) - by me; यानि (yāni) - which; दृष्टानि (dṛṣṭāni) - seen; मे (me) - by me; तस्याम् (tasyām) - in that; मनः (manaḥ) - mind; तपति (tapati) - burns; तत् (tat) - that; च (ca) - and; मे (me) - my;]
(The names of jewels I had not heard before; those which I have seen, in that my mind burns, and that too is mine.)
I had not heard the names of the jewels before; among those I have seen, my mind is attached to them, and they are mine. (2-46-35)
