pareṣāmeva yaśasā ślāghase tvaṃ; sadā channaḥ kutsayan dhārtarāṣṭrān. jānīmas tvāṃ vidura yat priyas tvaṃ; bālān ivāsmān avamanyase tvam ॥2-57-1॥

(You praise only the fame of others; always hidden, reviling the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra. We know you, O Vidura, that you are dear; you disregard us like children. (2-57-1))
You always praise only the fame of others, remaining hidden and constantly criticizing the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra. We know you, Vidura, as someone who is dear to them; you treat us with disregard, as if we were children. (2-57-1)
सुविज्ञेयः पुरुषोऽन्यत्रकामो; निन्दाप्रशंसे हि तथा युनक्ति। जिह्वा मनस्ते हृदयं निर्व्यनक्ति; ज्यायो निराह मनसः प्रातिकूल्यम् ॥२-५७-२॥
suvi-jñeyaḥ puruṣo'nyatra-kāmo; nindā-praśaṃse hi tathā yunakti. jihvā manas-te hṛdayaṃ nir-vyanakti; jyāyo nir-āha manasaḥ prātikūlyam ॥2-57-2॥
[सुविज्ञेयः (suvi-jñeyaḥ) - easily-known; पुरुषः (puruṣaḥ) - person; अन्यत्रकामः (anyatra-kāmaḥ) - desiring-elsewhere; निन्दाप्रशंसे (nindā-praśaṃse) - blame-praise; हि (hi) - indeed; तथा (tathā) - thus; युनक्ति (yunakti) - joins; जिह्वा (jihvā) - tongue; मनः (manaḥ) - mind; ते (te) - your; हृदयं (hṛdayaṃ) - heart; निर्व्यनक्ति (nir-vyanakti) - reveals; ज्यायः (jyāyaḥ) - greater; निराह (nir-āha) - declares; मनसः (manasaḥ) - of-the-mind; प्रातिकूल्यम् (prātikūlyam) - contrariness;]
(Easily-known is the person whose desire is elsewhere; indeed, he thus joins blame and praise. The tongue, your mind, reveals the heart; the greater declares the contrariness of the mind.)
A person whose desires are elsewhere is easily recognized, for he equally associates with both blame and praise. The tongue and your mind reveal the heart; the greater one declares the mind's opposition. (2-57-2)
उत्सङ्गेन व्याल इवाहृतोऽसि; मार्जारवत्पोषकं चोपहंसि। भर्तृघ्नत्वान्न हि पापीय आहु; स्तस्मात्क्षत्तः किं न बिभेषि पापात् ॥२-५७-३॥
utsaṅgena vyāla ivāhṛto'si; mārjāravatpoṣakaṃ copahaṃsi. bhartṛghnatvānna hi pāpīya āhu; stasmātkṣattaḥ kiṃ na bibheṣi pāpāt ॥2-57-3॥
[उत्सङ्गेन (utsaṅgena) - by the lap; by the embrace; व्यालः (vyālaḥ) - serpent; इव (iva) - like; as if; आहृतः (āhṛtaḥ) - brought; taken; असि (asi) - you are; मार्जारवत् (mārjāravat) - like a cat; पोषकम् (poṣakam) - the nourisher; the one who nourishes; च (ca) - and; उपहंसि (upahaṃsi) - you harm; you injure; भर्तृघ्नत्वात् (bhartṛghnatvāt) - because of being a destroyer of the master; due to the quality of killing the master; न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; पापीयः (pāpīyaḥ) - more sinful; आहु (āhu) - they say; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; क्षत्तः (kṣattaḥ) - O servant; steward; किम् (kim) - why; what; न (na) - not; बिभेषि (bibheṣi) - do you fear; पापात् (pāpāt) - from sin;]
(By the lap, like a serpent you are brought; like a cat, you harm the nourisher. Because of being a destroyer of the master, indeed, they say you are more sinful; therefore, O servant, why do you not fear sin?)
You have been brought close like a serpent in the lap; like a cat, you harm your benefactor. Because you destroy your master, people say you are even more sinful; therefore, O steward, why do you not fear sin? (2-57-3)
जित्वा शत्रून्फलमाप्तं महन्नो; मास्मान्क्षत्तः परुषाणीह वोचः। द्विषद्भिस्त्वं सम्प्रयोगाभिनन्दी; मुहुर्द्वेषं यासि नः सम्प्रमोहात् ॥२-५७-४॥
jitvā śatrūn phalam āptaṃ mahan no; mā asmān kṣattaḥ paruṣāṇi iha vocaḥ. dviṣadbhis tvaṃ samprayoga-abhinandī; muhuḥ dveṣaṃ yāsi naḥ sampramohāt ॥2-57-4॥
[जित्वा (jitvā) - having conquered; शत्रून् (śatrūn) - enemies; फलम् (phalam) - fruit; आप्तम् (āptam) - obtained; महन् (mahan) - great; नः (naḥ) - our; मा (mā) - do not; अस्मान् (asmān) - us; क्षत्तः (kṣattaḥ) - injured; परुषाणि (paruṣāṇi) - harsh (words); इह (iha) - here; वोचः (vocaḥ) - you speak; द्विषद्भिः (dviṣadbhih) - by enemies; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; सम्प्रयोग (samprayoga) - contact; अभिनन्दी (abhinandī) - delighting; मुहुः (muhuḥ) - again and again; द्वेषम् (dveṣam) - hatred; यासि (yāsi) - you go; नः (naḥ) - our; सम्प्रमोहात् (sampramohāt) - from complete delusion;]
(Having conquered enemies, having obtained the great fruit for us, do not, having injured us, speak harsh words here. You, delighting in contact with enemies, again and again go to hatred of us from complete delusion. (2-57-4))
Having conquered the enemies and gained great benefit for us, do not, after harming us, speak harsh words here. You, who delight in association with our enemies, repeatedly turn to hatred against us out of utter delusion. (2-57-4)
अमित्रतां याति नरोऽक्षमं ब्रुव; न्निगूहते गुह्यममित्रसंस्तवे। तदाश्रितापत्रपा किं न बाधते; यदिच्छसि त्वं तदिहाद्य भाषसे ॥२-५७-५॥
amitratāṃ yāti naro'kṣamaṃ bruvan nigūhate guhyam amitra-saṃstave. tad āśritāpatrapā kiṃ na bādhate; yad icchasi tvaṃ tad ihādya bhāṣase ॥2-57-5॥
[अमित्रतां (amitratām) - enmity; याति (yāti) - goes; नरः (naraḥ) - man; अक्षमं (akṣamam) - impatiently; ब्रुवन् (bruvan) - speaking; न (na) - not; निगूहते (nigūhate) - conceals; गुह्यम् (guhyam) - secret; अमित्रसंस्तवे (amitra-saṃstave) - in the presence of an enemy; तत् (tat) - that; आश्रित (āśrita) - dependent; अपत्रपा (apatrapā) - shameless; किं (kiṃ) - what; न (na) - not; बाधते (bādhate) - afflicts; यत् (yat) - what; इच्छसि (icchasi) - you desire; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; तत् (tat) - that; इह (iha) - here; आद्य (ādya) - today; भाषसे (bhāṣase) - you speak;]
(A man, speaking impatiently, goes to enmity; he does not conceal a secret in the presence of an enemy. That shameless dependent—what does not afflict him? Whatever you desire, that you speak here today.)
A man who speaks impatiently becomes an enemy; he does not hide secrets when among enemies. For the shameless dependent, what does not trouble him? Whatever you wish, you say here today. (2-57-5)
मा नोऽवमंस्था विद्म मनस्तवेदं; शिक्षस्व बुद्धिं स्थविराणां सकाशात्। यशो रक्षस्व विदुर सम्प्रणीतं; मा व्यापृतः परकार्येषु भूस्त्वम् ॥२-५७-६॥
mā no'vamaṃsthā vidma manastavedaṃ; śikṣasva buddhiṃ sthavirāṇāṃ sakāśāt. yaśo rakṣasva vidura saṃpraṇītaṃ; mā vyāpṛtaḥ parakāryeṣu bhūstvam ॥2-57-6॥
[मा (mā) - do not; नः (naḥ) - us; अवमंस्था (avamaṃsthā) - despise; विद्म (vidma) - we know; मनः (manaḥ) - mind; तव (tava) - your; इदं (idaṃ) - this; शिक्षस्व (śikṣasva) - learn; बुद्धिं (buddhiṃ) - intellect; स्थविराणाम् (sthavirāṇām) - of elders; सकाशात् (sakāśāt) - from; यशः (yaśaḥ) - fame; रक्षस्व (rakṣasva) - protect; विदुर (vidura) - O Vidura; सम्प्रणीतम् (saṃpraṇītam) - well-conducted; मा (mā) - do not; व्यापृतः (vyāpṛtaḥ) - engaged; परकार्येषु (parakāryeṣu) - in others' affairs; भूः (bhūḥ) - be; त्वम् (tvam) - you;]
(Do not despise us, we know this mind of yours; learn intellect from the elders. Protect the fame well-conducted, O Vidura; do not be engaged in others' affairs, you.)
Do not look down upon us, for we understand your mind; learn wisdom from the elders. O Vidura, protect your well-earned fame; do not involve yourself in the affairs of others. (2-57-6)
अहं कर्तेति विदुर मावमंस्था; मा नो नित्यं परुषाणीह वोचः। न त्वां पृच्छामि विदुर यद्धितं मे; स्वस्ति क्षत्तर्मा तितिक्षून्क्षिणु त्वम् ॥२-५७-७॥
ahaṃ karteti vidura māvamaṃsthā; mā no nityaṃ paruṣāṇīha vocaḥ. na tvāṃ pṛcchāmi vidura yaddhitaṃ me; svasti kṣattarmā titikṣūnkṣiṇu tvam ॥2-57-7॥
[अहं (ahaṃ) - I; कर्ते (karte) - doer; इति (iti) - thus; विदुर (vidura) - O Vidura; मा (mā) - do not; अवमंस्था (avamaṃsthā) - despise; मा (mā) - do not; नः (naḥ) - us; नित्यं (nityaṃ) - always; परुषाणि (paruṣāṇi) - harsh words; इह (iha) - here; वोचः (vocaḥ) - speak; न (na) - not; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; पृच्छामि (pṛcchāmi) - I ask; विदुर (vidura) - O Vidura; यत् (yat) - what; हितं (hitaṃ) - beneficial; मे (me) - to me; स्वस्ति (svasti) - well-being; क्षत्तर् (kṣattar) - O steward; मा (mā) - do not; तितिक्षून् (titikṣūn) - the patient ones; क्षिणु (kṣiṇu) - destroy; त्वम् (tvam) - you;]
(I doer thus O Vidura do not despise; do not us always harsh words here speak. Not you I ask O Vidura what beneficial to me; well-being O steward do not the patient ones destroy you. (2-57-7))
O Vidura, do not think 'I am the doer'; do not always speak harsh words to us here. I do not ask you, Vidura, for what is beneficial to me; O steward, may there be well-being, do not destroy the patient ones. (2-57-7)
एकः शास्ता न द्वितीयोऽस्ति शास्ता; गर्भे शयानं पुरुषं शास्ति शास्ता। तेनानुशिष्टः प्रवणादिवाम्भो; यथा नियुक्तोऽस्मि तथा वहामि ॥२-५७-८॥
ekaḥ śāstā na dvitīyo'sti śāstā; garbhe śayānaṃ puruṣaṃ śāsti śāstā. tenānuśiṣṭaḥ pravaṇādivāmbho; yathā niyukto'smi tathā vahāmi ॥2-57-8॥
[एकः (ekaḥ) - one; शास्ता (śāstā) - teacher; punisher; न (na) - not; द्वितीयः (dvitīyaḥ) - second; another; अस्ति (asti) - is; शास्ता (śāstā) - teacher; punisher; गर्भे (garbhe) - in the womb; शयानम् (śayānam) - lying; sleeping; पुरुषम् (puruṣam) - person; man; शास्ति (śāsti) - teaches; punishes; शास्ता (śāstā) - teacher; punisher; तेन (tena) - by him; अनुशिष्टः (anuśiṣṭaḥ) - instructed; taught; प्रवणात् (pravaṇāt) - from a slope; इव (iva) - like; as; अम्भः (ambhaḥ) - water; यथा (yathā) - as; in the manner; नियुक्तः (niyuktaḥ) - appointed; assigned; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; तथा (tathā) - so; thus; वहामि (vahāmi) - I carry; I bear;]
(One teacher, not a second is teacher; the teacher instructs the person lying in the womb. Instructed by him, like water from a slope, as I am appointed, so I carry (out).)
There is only one teacher; there is no second teacher. The teacher instructs even the person lying in the womb. Instructed by him, just as water flows from a slope, so do I act as I am appointed. (2-57-8)
भिनत्ति शिरसा शैलमहिं भोजयते च यः। स एव तस्य कुरुते कार्याणामनुशासनम् ॥२-५७-९॥
bhinatti śirasā śailamahiṃ bhojayate ca yaḥ। sa eva tasya kurute kāryāṇām anuśāsanam ॥2-57-9॥
[भिनत्ति (bhinatti) - breaks; (from root 'bhid', to split or break;) शिरसा (śirasā) - with the head; (instrumental of 'śiras', head;) शैलमहिं (śailamahiṃ) - mountain earth; (śaila - mountain; mahi - earth; accusative singular;) भोजयते (bhojayate) - causes to eat; (causative of 'bhuj', to eat;) च (ca) - and; यः (yaḥ) - who; स (sa) - he; एव (eva) - indeed; तस्य (tasya) - of him; कुरुते (kurute) - does; (from root 'kṛ', to do;) कार्यार्थानाम् (kāryāṇām) - of actions; (genitive plural of 'kārya', action;) अनुशासनम् (anuśāsanam) - command; (from 'anuśās', to command or instruct;);]
(He who breaks the mountain earth with his head and causes (others) to eat, he indeed does the command of his actions.)
He who breaks the mountain earth with his head and feeds others is the one who truly commands his own actions. (2-57-9)
यो बलादनुशास्तीह सोऽमित्रं तेन विन्दति। मित्रतामनुवृत्तं तु समुपेक्षेत पण्डितः ॥२-५७-१०॥
yo balād anuśāstīha so'mitraṃ tena vindati। mitratām anuvṛttaṃ tu samupekṣeta paṇḍitaḥ ॥2-57-10॥
[यः (yaḥ) - who; बलात् (balāt) - by force; अनुशास्ति (anuśāsti) - instructs; इह (iha) - here; सः (saḥ) - he; अमित्रं (amitraṃ) - enemy; तेन (tena) - by him; विन्दति (vindati) - finds; मित्रताम् (mitratām) - friendship; अनुवृत्तं (anuvṛttam) - obedient; तु (tu) - but; समुपेक्षेत (samupekṣeta) - should disregard; पण्डितः (paṇḍitaḥ) - wise person;]
(Who here instructs by force, he finds an enemy by him. But the wise person should disregard one who is obedient in friendship.)
He who instructs by force here makes an enemy for himself; but the wise man should overlook even an obedient friend. (2-57-10)
प्रदीप्य यः प्रदीप्ताग्निं प्राक्त्वरन्नाभिधावति। भस्मापि न स विन्देत शिष्टं क्वचन भारत ॥२-५७-११॥
pradīpya yaḥ pradīptāgniṃ prāktvarannābhidhāvati। bhasmāpi na sa vindeta śiṣṭaṃ kvacana bhārata ॥2-57-11॥
[प्रदीप्य (pradīpya) - having kindled; यः (yaḥ) - who; प्रदीप्त-अग्निम् (pradīpta-agniṃ) - blazing fire; प्राक् (prāk) - before; त्वरन् (tvaran) - hastening; अभिधावति (abhidhāvati) - rushes towards; भस्म (bhasma) - ashes; अपि (api) - even; न (na) - not; सः (sa) - he; विन्देत (vindeta) - would obtain; शिष्टम् (śiṣṭam) - remnant; क्वचन (kvacana) - anywhere; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(Having kindled, who, blazing fire, before, hastening, rushes towards, ashes, even, not, he, would obtain, remnant, anywhere, O Bhārata.)
O Bhārata, even if one hastily rushes towards blazing fire after kindling it, he would not obtain even ashes as a remnant anywhere. (2-57-11)
न वासयेत्पारवर्ग्यं द्विषन्तं; विशेषतः क्षत्तरहितं मनुष्यम्। स यत्रेच्छसि विदुर तत्र गच्छ; सुसान्त्वितापि ह्यसती स्त्री जहाति ॥२-५७-१२॥
na vāsayet pāravargyaṃ dviṣantaṃ; viśeṣataḥ kṣattarhitaṃ manuṣyam। sa yatrecchasi vidura tatra gaccha; susāntvitāpi hy asatī strī jahāti ॥2-57-12॥
[न (na) - not; वासयेत् (vāsayet) - should cause to dwell; पारवर्ग्यं (pāravargyaṃ) - one belonging to the enemy's side; द्विषन्तं (dviṣantam) - hating; विशेषतः (viśeṣataḥ) - especially; क्षत्तरहितं (kṣattarhitaṃ) - deprived of food; मनुष्यम् (manuṣyam) - person; स (sa) - he; यत्र (yatra) - where; इच्छसि (icchasi) - you wish; विदुर (vidura) - O Vidura; तत्र (tatra) - there; गच्छ (gaccha) - go; सुसान्त्विता (susāntvitā) - well-appeased; अपि (api) - even; हि (hi) - indeed; असती (asatī) - unfaithful woman; स्त्री (strī) - woman; जहाति (jahāti) - abandons;]
(One should not cause to dwell one belonging to the enemy's side, hating, especially a person deprived of food. He, O Vidura, go where you wish; even a well-appeased unfaithful woman indeed abandons (her husband).)
Do not let an enemy, a hater, especially a starving person, stay with you. O Vidura, go wherever you wish; even a well-appeased unfaithful woman will abandon her husband. (2-57-12)
विदुर उवाच॥

एतावता ये पुरुषं त्यजन्ति; तेषां सख्यमन्तवद्ब्रूहि राजन्। राज्ञां हि चित्तानि परिप्लुतानि; सान्त्वं दत्त्वा मुसलैर्घातयन्ति ॥२-५७-१३॥
etāvatā ye puruṣaṃ tyajanti; teṣāṃ sakhyam antavad brūhi rājan. rājñāṃ hi cittāni pariplutāni; sāntvaṃ dattvā musalair ghātayanti ॥2-57-13॥
[एतावता (etāvatā) - by this much; by such means; ये (ye) - who; those who; पुरुषं (puruṣam) - man; person; त्यजन्ति (tyajanti) - abandon; forsake; तेषां (teṣām) - of them; their; सख्यम् (sakhyam) - friendship; अन्तवत् (antavat) - having an end; perishable; ब्रूहि (brūhi) - tell; speak; राजन् (rājan) - O king; राज्ञाम् (rājñām) - of kings; हि (hi) - indeed; surely; चित्तानि (cittāni) - minds; परिप्लुतानि (pariplutāni) - disturbed; agitated; सान्त्वम् (sāntvam) - consolation; appeasement; दत्त्वा (dattvā) - having given; मुसलैः (musalaiḥ) - with clubs; घातयन्ति (ghātayanti) - strike; kill;]
(By this much, those who abandon a man; to them, say that friendship is perishable, O king. Indeed, the minds of kings are disturbed; having given appeasement, they strike with clubs. (2-57-13))
By such means, those who forsake a person—tell them that friendship is perishable, O king. The minds of kings are indeed agitated; after offering appeasement, they strike with clubs. (2-57-13)
अबालस्त्वं मन्यसे राजपुत्र; बालोऽहमित्येव सुमन्दबुद्धे। यः सौहृदे पुरुषं स्थापयित्वा; पश्चादेनं दूषयते स बालः ॥२-५७-१४॥
abālastvaṃ manyase rājaputra; bālo'hamityeva sumandabuddhe. yaḥ sauhṛde puruṣaṃ sthāpayitvā; paścādenaṃ dūṣayate sa bālaḥ ॥2-57-14॥
[अबालः (abālaḥ) - not-child; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; मन्यसे (manyase) - think; राजपुत्र (rājaputra) - prince; बालः (bālaḥ) - child; अहम् (aham) - I; इति (iti) - thus; एव (eva) - indeed; सुमन्दबुद्धे (sumandabuddhe) - very dull-witted; यः (yaḥ) - who; सौहृदे (sauhṛde) - in friendship; पुरुषम् (puruṣam) - a person; स्थापयित्वा (sthāpayitvā) - having established; पश्चात् (paścāt) - afterwards; एनम् (enam) - him; दूषयते (dūṣayate) - blames; सः (saḥ) - he; बालः (bālaḥ) - child;]
(You think you are not a child, O prince; I am a child, indeed, O very dull-witted one. He who, having established a person in friendship, afterwards blames him, he is a child.)
You consider yourself not a child, O prince, and think that I am a child, O very dull-witted one. But he who, after establishing someone in friendship, later blames him—he is truly a child. (2-57-14)
न श्रेयसे नीयते मन्दबुद्धिः; स्त्री श्रोत्रियस्येव गृहे प्रदुष्टा। ध्रुवं न रोचेद्भरतर्षभस्य; पतिः कुमार्या इव षष्टिवर्षः ॥२-५७-१५॥
na śreyase nīyate mandabuddhiḥ; strī śrotriyasyeva gṛhe praduṣṭā. dhruvaṃ na rocedbharatarṣabhasya; patiḥ kumāryā iva ṣaṣṭivarṣaḥ ॥2-57-15॥
[न (na) - not; श्रेयसे (śreyase) - for good; for benefit; नीयते (nīyate) - is led; is conducted; मन्दबुद्धिः (mandabuddhiḥ) - dull-witted; of slow intellect; स्त्री (strī) - woman; श्रोत्रियस्य (śrotriyasya) - of a learned Brahmin; इव (iva) - like; as if; गृहे (gṛhe) - in the house; प्रदुष्टा (praduṣṭā) - corrupted; spoiled; ध्रुवं (dhruvaṃ) - certainly; surely; न (na) - not; रोचेत् (rocet) - would please; would be agreeable; भरतर्षभस्य (bharatarṣabhasya) - of the bull among the Bharatas; पतिः (patiḥ) - husband; कुमार्या (kumāryā) - of a young girl; इव (iva) - like; as if; षष्टिवर्षः (ṣaṣṭivarṣaḥ) - sixty years old;]
(Not for good is the dull-witted led; a woman corrupted in the house of a learned Brahmin. Certainly, it would not please the bull among the Bharatas; a husband sixty years old, like (the husband) of a young girl. (2-57-15))
A dull-witted person is not led to good; just as a woman corrupted in the house of a learned Brahmin. Surely, it would not be pleasing to the best of the Bharatas, just as a sixty-year-old husband would not please a young girl. (2-57-15)
अनुप्रियं चेदनुकाङ्क्षसे त्वं; सर्वेषु कार्येषु हिताहितेषु। स्त्रियश्च राजञ्जडपङ्गुकांश्च; पृच्छ त्वं वै तादृशांश्चैव मूढान् ॥२-५७-१६॥
anupriyaṃ ced anukāṅkṣase tvaṃ; sarveṣu kāryeṣu hitāhiteṣu. striyaś ca rājan jaḍapaṅgukāṃś ca; pṛccha tvaṃ vai tādṛśāṃś caiva mūḍhān ॥2-57-16॥
[अनुप्रियं (anupriyam) - not-pleasing; चेत् (cet) - if; अनुकाङ्क्षसे (anukāṅkṣase) - you desire; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; सर्वेषु (sarveṣu) - in all; कार्येषु (kāryeṣu) - actions; हित (hita) - beneficial; अहितेषु (ahiteṣu) - and in harmful; स्त्रियः (striyaḥ) - women; च (ca) - and; राजन् (rājan) - O king; जड (jaḍa) - dull; पङ्गुकान् (paṅgukān) - crippled; च (ca) - and; पृच्छ (pṛccha) - ask; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; वै (vai) - indeed; तादृशान् (tādṛśān) - such; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - only; मूढान् (mūḍhān) - fools;]
(If you desire what is not pleasing, you, in all actions, both beneficial and harmful, women and, O king, the dull and the crippled and, ask you indeed such and only fools.)
If you wish for what is unpleasant, O king, then in all matters, whether beneficial or harmful, consult women, the dull, the crippled, and such fools as these. (2-57-16)
लभ्यः खलु प्रातिपीय नरोऽनुप्रियवागिह। अप्रियस्य तु पथ्यस्य वक्ता श्रोता च दुर्लभः ॥२-५७-१७॥
labhyaḥ khalu prātipīya naro'nupriyavāgiha। apriyasya tu pathyasya vaktā śrotā ca durlabhaḥ ॥2-57-17॥
[लभ्यः (labhyaḥ) - obtainable; खलु (khalu) - indeed; प्रातिपीय (prātipīya) - opposite; नरः (naraḥ) - man; अनुप्रियवाक् (anupriyavāk) - one who speaks agreeable words; इह (iha) - here; अप्रियस्य (apriyasya) - of the disagreeable; तु (tu) - but; पथ्यस्य (pathyasya) - of the wholesome; वक्ता (vaktā) - speaker; श्रोता (śrotā) - listener; च (ca) - and; दुर्लभः (durlabhaḥ) - rare;]
(Obtainable indeed is a man here who speaks agreeable words to the opposite; but a speaker and listener of the disagreeable yet wholesome is rare.)
It is easy to find a man who speaks pleasing words even to an opponent; but it is rare to find both a speaker and a listener for words that are unpleasant yet beneficial. (2-57-17)
यस्तु धर्मे पराश्वस्य हित्वा भर्तुः प्रियाप्रिये। अप्रियाण्याह पथ्यानि तेन राजा सहायवान् ॥२-५७-१८॥
yastu dharme parāśvasya hitvā bhartuḥ priyāpriye। apriyāṇyāha pathyāni tena rājā sahāyavān ॥2-57-18॥
[यः (yaḥ) - who; तु (tu) - but; धर्मे (dharme) - in righteousness; पराश्वस्य (parāśvasya) - of another's side; हित्वा (hitvā) - having abandoned; भर्तुः (bhartuḥ) - of the master; प्रियाप्रिये (priyāpriye) - pleasing and unpleasing; अप्रियाणि (apriyāṇi) - unpleasant things; आह (āha) - speaks; पथ्यानि (pathyāni) - wholesome; तेन (tena) - by him; राजा (rājā) - the king; सहायवान् (sahāyavān) - having helpers;]
(But who, having abandoned another's side in righteousness, speaks to the master what is unpleasing but wholesome, by him the king is possessed of helpers.)
But he who, in matters of righteousness, forsakes the side of another and tells his master what is unpleasant yet beneficial, such a king has true helpers. (2-57-18)
अव्याधिजं कटुकं तीक्ष्णमुष्णं; यशोमुषं परुषं पूतिगन्धि। सतां पेयं यन्न पिबन्त्यसन्तो; मन्युं महाराज पिब प्रशाम्य ॥२-५७-१९॥
avyādhijaṃ kaṭukaṃ tīkṣṇamuṣṇaṃ; yaśomuṣaṃ paruṣaṃ pūtigandhi. satāṃ peyaṃ yan na pibanty asanto; manyuṃ mahārāja piba praśāmya ॥2-57-19॥
[अव्याधिजम् (avyādhijam) - not arising from disease; कटुकम् (kaṭukam) - pungent; तीक्ष्णम् (tīkṣṇam) - sharp; उष्णम् (uṣṇam) - hot; यशोमुषम् (yaśomuṣam) - stealing fame; परुषम् (paruṣam) - harsh; पूतिगन्धि (pūtigandhi) - foul-smelling; सताम् (satām) - of the good; पेयं (peyam) - drinkable; यत् (yat) - which; न (na) - not; पिबन्ति (pibanti) - drink; असन्तः (asantaḥ) - the wicked; मन्यम् (manyum) - anger; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; पिब (piba) - drink; प्रशाम्य (praśāmya) - pacify;]
(Not arising from disease, pungent, sharp, hot, stealing fame, harsh, foul-smelling; the drink of the good, which the wicked do not drink—anger, O great king, drink (it) and pacify (it).)
O great king, anger is not born of disease, it is pungent, sharp, hot, steals away fame, is harsh and foul-smelling; it is the drink of the good, which the wicked do not partake. Therefore, O king, drink down your anger and pacify it. (2-57-19)
वैचित्रवीर्यस्य यशो धनं च; वाञ्छाम्यहं सहपुत्रस्य शश्वत्। यथा तथा वोऽस्तु नमश्च वोऽस्तु; ममापि च स्वस्ति दिशन्तु विप्राः ॥२-५७-२०॥
vaicitravīryasya yaśo dhanaṃ ca; vāñchāmyahaṃ sahaputrasya śaśvat| yathā tathā vo'stu namaśca vo'stu; mamāpi ca svasti diśantu viprāḥ ॥2-57-20॥
[वैचित्रवीर्यस्य (vaicitravīryasya) - of Vichitravirya; यशः (yaśaḥ) - fame; धनं (dhanaṃ) - wealth; च (ca) - and; वाञ्छामि (vāñchāmi) - I desire; अहम् (aham) - I; सहपुत्रस्य (sahaputrasya) - with (my) son; शश्वत् (śaśvat) - always; यथा (yathā) - as; तथा (tathā) - so; वः (vaḥ) - to you; अस्तु (astu) - let it be; नमः (namaḥ) - salutation; च (ca) - and; वः (vaḥ) - to you; अस्तु (astu) - let it be; मम (mama) - to me; अपि (api) - also; च (ca) - and; स्वस्ति (svasti) - well-being; दिशन्तु (diśantu) - may they bestow; विप्राः (viprāḥ) - the Brāhmaṇas;]
(Of Vichitravirya, fame and wealth and I desire always with (my) son. As so to you let it be, salutation and to you let it be. To me also and well-being may they bestow, the Brāhmaṇas.)
I always desire the fame and wealth of Vichitravirya along with my son. May it be so for you as well; may salutations and blessings be upon you. May the Brāhmaṇas also bestow well-being upon me. (2-57-20)
आशीविषान्नेत्रविषान्कोपयेन्न तु पण्डितः। एवं तेऽहं वदामीदं प्रयतः कुरुनन्दन ॥२-५७-२१॥
āśī-viṣāt netra-viṣāt kopayet na tu paṇḍitaḥ। evaṃ te 'haṃ vadāmi idaṃ prayataḥ kuru-nandana ॥2-57-21॥
[आशीविषात् (āśī-viṣāt) - from the poison of a snake; नेत्रविषात् (netra-viṣāt) - from the poison in the eye; कोपयेत् (kopayet) - should be angered; न (na) - not; तु (tu) - but; पण्डितः (paṇḍitaḥ) - the wise person; एवं (evaṃ) - thus; ते (te) - to you; अहम् (aham) - I; वदामि (vadāmi) - say; इदं (idaṃ) - this; प्रयतः (prayataḥ) - attentively; कुरुनन्दन (kuru-nandana) - O delight of the Kurus;]
(From the poison of a snake, from the poison in the eye, one should be angered, not but the wise person. Thus to you I say this attentively, O delight of the Kurus.)
A wise person should not be angered even by the poison of a snake or the poison in the eye. Thus, O delight of the Kurus, I tell you this with care. (2-57-21)
