(Much wealth you have conquered of the Pāṇḍavas, Yudhiṣṭhira. Tell the wealth, O son of Kunti, if there is any unconquered by you. (2-58-1))

अयुतं प्रयुतं चैव खर्वं पद्मं तथार्बुदम्। शङ्खं चैव निखर्वं च समुद्रं चात्र पण्यताम् ॥ एतन्मम धनं राजंस्तेन दीव्याम्यहं त्वया ॥२-५८-३॥

(Cows and horses, with many female calves, innumerable, goats and sheep, whatever little of those of similar color to the east of the Sindhu (Indus river), even O son of Subala, this is my wealth, O king; with that I play (at dice), I, with you.)
O son of Subala, all my wealth—cows and horses, countless goats and sheep, herds with many calves, and whatever little of similar kind that lies east of the Sindhu river—this is what I possess, O king; with this, I will stake myself in play with you. (2-58-5)

This Sahadeva instructs on dharma; in this world, he has indeed gained the reputation of being wise. Because of the unworthiness of that prince, I am playing dice with you, my beloved, as if you were not dear to me. (2-58-14)

Hearing this, and having resolved to resort to deceit, Śakuni said to Yudhiṣṭhira, "You are conquered!" (2-58-15)

(You practice unrighteousness indeed, who do not consider conduct indeed; who, O deluded one, wish to create division among us good-minded ones.)

He who is our leader in battle, like a boatman who ferries us across, the swift prince who conquers enemies—because of the unworthiness shown by that hero of the world, O Śakuni, I am playing at dice with Phalguna (Arjuna). (2-58-20)

(Much wealth, you have conquered, brothers and together with elephants. Tell (me) the wealth, O son of Kunti, if you have unconquered (wealth).)

[एतत् (etat) - this; पापिष्ठम् (pāpiṣṭham) - most sinful; अकरः (akarah) - you did; यत् (yat) - that; आत्मानम् (ātmānam) - yourself; पराजितः (parājitaḥ) - defeated; शिष्टे (śiṣṭe) - remaining; सति (sati) - when; धने (dhane) - wealth; राजन् (rājan) - O king; पाप (pāpa) - sin; आत्मपराजयः (ātma-parājayaḥ) - self-defeat;]
(This most sinful act you did, that you yourself were defeated. When wealth remains, O king, sin is self-defeat.)
This is the most sinful thing you have done, that you have been defeated by yourself. When wealth still remains, O king, the greatest sin is self-defeat. (2-58-29)

(Thus having spoken, Matākṣa in the contest defeated all those standing, the worldly heroes, by challenge, separately.)
Thus, after saying this, Matākṣa defeated all the assembled worldly heroes in the contest, challenging each one separately. (2-58-30)

You have a beloved lady, the goddess. There is one game that remains unconquered. Stake Kṛṣṇā, Pāñcālī, and with her, win yourself back again. (2-58-31)

शारदोत्पलपत्राक्ष्या शारदोत्पलगन्धया। शारदोत्पलसेविन्या रूपेण श्रीसमानया ॥२-५८-३३॥

She whose eyes resemble the leaves of the autumnal blue lotus, who possesses the fragrance of the autumnal blue lotus, who serves the autumnal blue lotus, and whose beauty is equal to that of Lakṣmī. (2-58-33)
तथैव स्यादानृशंस्यात्तथा स्याद्रूपसम्पदा। तथा स्याच्छीलसम्पत्त्या यामिच्छेत्पुरुषः स्त्रियम् ॥२-५८-३४॥
tathaiva syād ānṛśaṁsyāt tathā syād rūpasampadā। tathā syāc chīlasampattyā yām icchet puruṣaḥ striyam ॥2-58-34॥

(In the same way, there may be (a woman) from compassion, so there may be (a woman) with beauty, so there may be (a woman) with virtue, whom a man may desire as a wife.)
Similarly, a man may desire a woman for her compassion, her beauty, or her virtue. (2-58-34)
चरमं संविशति या प्रथमं प्रतिबुध्यते। आ गोपालाविपालेभ्यः सर्वं वेद कृताकृतम् ॥२-५८-३५॥
caramaṃ saṃviśati yā prathamaṃ pratibudhyate। ā gopālāvipālebhyaḥ sarvaṃ veda kṛtākṛtam ॥2-58-35॥

आभाति पद्मवद्वक्त्रं सस्वेदं मल्लिकेव च। वेदीमध्या दीर्घकेशी ताम्राक्षी नातिरोमशा ॥२-५८-३६॥
ābhāti padmavad-vaktraṃ sasvedaṃ mallikeva ca। vedī-madhyā dīrgha-keśī tāmrākṣī nāti-romaśā ॥2-58-36॥

(Shines like a lotus the face, with perspiration like jasmine and; altar-middle, long-haired, coppery-eyed, not excessively hairy.)
Her face shines like a lotus, with perspiration like jasmine; her middle is like an altar, she has long hair, coppery eyes, and is not excessively hairy. (2-58-36)
तयैवंविधया राजन्पाञ्चाल्याहं सुमध्यया। ग्लहं दीव्यामि चार्वङ्ग्या द्रौपद्या हन्त सौबल ॥२-५८-३७॥
tayai-vaṃvidhayā rājan-pāñcālyāhaṃ sumadhyayā। glahaṃ dīvyāmi cārvaṅgyā draupadyā hanta saubala ॥2-58-37॥

(By her of such kind, O king, by Pāñcālī, I, of slender waist, the dice-game I play with the beautiful one, with Draupadī, alas, O son of Subala.)
O king, with such a woman as Pāñcālī, I, of slender waist, am playing the dice-game with the beautiful Draupadī—alas, O son of Subala! (2-58-37)

O Bhārata, when Dharmarāja spoke these words, the elders and members of the assembly exclaimed 'shame, shame', and such words came forth from them. (2-58-38)
चुक्षुभे सा सभा राजन्राज्ञां सञ्जज्ञिरे कथाः। भीष्मद्रोणकृपादीनां स्वेदश्च समजायत ॥२-५८-३९॥
cukṣubhe sā sabhā rājan rājñāṃ sañjajñire kathāḥ। bhīṣma-droṇa-kṛpa-ādīnāṃ svedaś ca samajāyata ॥2-58-39॥

(That assembly was agitated, O king; discussions arose among the kings. Sweat appeared on Bhishma, Drona, Kripa and others.)
O king, that assembly became agitated; the kings began to discuss. Sweat appeared on Bhishma, Drona, Kripa, and the others. (2-58-39)
शिरो गृहीत्वा विदुरो गतसत्त्व इवाभवत्। आस्ते ध्यायन्नधोवक्त्रो निःश्वसन्पन्नगो यथा ॥२-५८-४०॥
śiro gṛhītvā viduro gatasattva ivābhavat। āste dhyāyannadhovaktro niḥśvasanpannago yathā ॥2-58-40॥

(Having taken his head, Vidura became like one whose vitality has departed. He sits meditating, with face downcast, sighing, as a serpent.)

धृतराष्ट्रस्तु संहृष्टः पर्यपृच्छत्पुनः पुनः। किं जितं किं जितमिति ह्याकारं नाभ्यरक्षत ॥२-५८-४१॥
dhṛtarāṣṭras tu saṃhṛṣṭaḥ paryapṛcchat punaḥ punaḥ। kiṃ jitaṃ kiṃ jitam iti hy ākāraṃ nābhyarakṣata ॥2-58-41॥

(But Dhritarashtra, delighted, repeatedly asked again and again, 'What has been won? What has been won?' Indeed, he did not restrain his expression.)
But Dhritarashtra, overjoyed, kept asking again and again, 'What has been won? What has been won?' Indeed, he could not conceal his excitement. (2-58-41)
जहर्ष कर्णोऽतिभृशं सह दुःशासनादिभिः। इतरेषां तु सभ्यानां नेत्रेभ्यः प्रापतज्जलम् ॥२-५८-४२॥
jaharṣa karṇo'tibhṛśaṃ saha duḥśāsanādibhiḥ। itareṣāṃ tu sabhyānāṃ netrebhyaḥ prāpatajjalam ॥2-58-42॥
[जहर्ष (jaharṣa) - rejoiced; कर्णः (karṇaḥ) - Karṇa; अतिभृशम् (atibhṛśam) - exceedingly; सह (saha) - together with; दुःशासनादिभिः (duḥśāsanādibhiḥ) - with Duḥśāsana and others; इतरेषाम् (itareṣām) - of the others; तु (tu) - but; सभ्यानाम् (sabhyānām) - of the assembly members; नेत्रेभ्यः (netrebhyaḥ) - from the eyes; प्रापतत् (prāpatat) - fell; जलम् (jalam) - water;]

सौबलस्त्वविचार्यैव जितकाशी मदोत्कटः। जितमित्येव तानक्षान्पुनरेवान्वपद्यत ॥२-५८-४३॥
saubalas tv avicāryaiva jitakāśī madotkaṭaḥ। jitam ity eva tān akṣān punar evānvapadyata ॥2-58-43॥

(The son of Subala, but without considering, having conquered Kāśī, intensely proud, thinking 'conquered indeed', those dice again indeed took up.)
But the son of Subala, intensely proud after conquering Kāśī and without any consideration, thinking 'I have won', once again took up those dice. (2-58-43)
