कर्ण उवाच॥

या नः श्रुता मनुष्येषु स्त्रियो रूपेण संमताः। तासामेतादृशं कर्म न कस्याञ्चन शुश्रुमः ॥२-६४-१॥
yā naḥ śrutā manuṣyeṣu striyo rūpeṇa saṃmatāḥ। tāsāmetādṛśaṃ karma na kasyāñcana śuśrumaḥ ॥2-64-1॥
[या (yā) - who; (feminine singular nominative); नः (naḥ) - by us; श्रुता (śrutā) - heard; मनुष्येषु (manuṣyeṣu) - among men; स्त्रियः (striyaḥ) - women; (nominative plural); रूपेण (rūpeṇa) - by beauty; संमताः (saṃmatāḥ) - respected; तासाम् (tāsām) - of those; (feminine genitive plural); एतादृशम् (etādṛśam) - such; कर्म (karma) - act; न (na) - not; कस्याञ्चन (kasyāñcana) - of anyone; शुश्रुमः (śuśrumaḥ) - have we heard;]
(Who among women, respected for their beauty, have we heard of among men by us—of those, such an act of anyone have we not heard.)
Of the women known to us among men, who are respected for their beauty, we have not heard of such an act by any of them. (2-64-1)
क्रोधाविष्टेषु पार्थेषु धार्तराष्ट्रेषु चाप्यति। द्रौपदी पाण्डुपुत्राणां कृष्णा शान्तिरिहाभवत् ॥२-६४-२॥
krodhāviṣṭeṣu pārtheṣu dhārtarāṣṭreṣu cāpyati. draupadī pāṇḍuputrāṇāṃ kṛṣṇā śāntirihābhavat ॥2-64-2॥
[क्रोधाविष्टेषु (krodhāviṣṭeṣu) - in those filled with anger; पार्थेषु (pārtheṣu) - among the sons of Pṛthā (Arjuna and brothers); धार्तराष्ट्रेषु (dhārtarāṣṭreṣu) - among the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; अति (ati) - excessively; द्रौपदी (draupadī) - Draupadī; पाण्डुपुत्राणां (pāṇḍuputrāṇāṃ) - of the sons of Pāṇḍu; कृष्णा (kṛṣṇā) - Kṛṣṇā (another name for Draupadī); शान्तिः (śāntiḥ) - peace; इह (iha) - here; अभवत् (abhavat) - became; ॥२-६४-२॥ (॥2-64-2॥) - (2-64-2);]
(In those filled with anger, among the sons of Pṛthā, among the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, and also excessively, Draupadī, Kṛṣṇā, peace here became.)
When the sons of Pṛthā and the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra were overwhelmed with anger, Draupadī, Kṛṣṇā, became the peace here. (2-64-2)
अप्लवेऽम्भसि मग्नानामप्रतिष्ठे निमज्जताम्। पाञ्चाली पाण्डुपुत्राणां नौरेषा पारगाभवत् ॥२-६४-३॥
aplave’mbhasi magnānām apratiṣṭhe nimajjatām। pāñcālī pāṇḍuputrāṇāṃ naureṣā pāragābhavat ॥2-64-3॥
[अप्लवे (aplave) - in the absence of a raft; अम्भसि (ambhasi) - in water; मग्नानाम् (magnānām) - of those who are sunk; अप्रतिष्ठे (apratiṣṭhe) - without support; निमज्जताम् (nimajjatām) - of those who are drowning; पाञ्चाली (pāñcālī) - Panchali (Draupadi); पाण्डुपुत्राणाम् (pāṇḍuputrāṇām) - of the sons of Pandu; नौः (nauḥ) - boat; एषा (eṣā) - this; पारगा (pāragā) - one who leads across; अभवत् (abhavat) - became;]
(In the absence of a raft, in water, of those who are sunk, without support, of those who are drowning, Panchali, of the sons of Pandu, this boat, one who leads across, became.)
When the sons of Pandu were sunk and drowning in water without support or a raft, Panchali became the boat that led them across. (2-64-3)
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

[वैशम्पायन (vaiśampāyana) - Vaiśampāyana; (name of the sage); उवाच (uvāca) - said;]

Vaiśampāyana said.
तद्वै श्रुत्वा भीमसेनः कुरुमध्येऽत्यमर्षणः। स्त्री गतिः पाण्डुपुत्राणामित्युवाच सुदुर्मनाः ॥२-६४-४॥
tad vai śrutvā bhīmasenaḥ kurumadhye'tyamarṣaṇaḥ। strī gatiḥ pāṇḍuputrāṇām ity uvāca sudurmanāḥ ॥2-64-4॥
[तत् (tat) - that; वै (vai) - indeed; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; भीमसेनः (bhīmasenaḥ) - Bhīmasena; कुरुमध्ये (kurumadhye) - in the midst of the Kurus; अत्यमरषणः (atyamarṣaṇaḥ) - exceedingly indignant; स्त्री (strī) - woman; गतिः (gatiḥ) - course; way; पाण्डुपुत्राणाम् (pāṇḍuputrāṇām) - of the sons of Pāṇḍu; इति (iti) - thus; उवाच (uvāca) - said; सुदुर्मनाः (sudurmanāḥ) - greatly distressed in mind;]
(That indeed having heard, Bhīmasena, exceedingly indignant in the midst of the Kurus, said, 'The course of the sons of Pāṇḍu is that of a woman,' thus, greatly distressed in mind.)
Hearing that, Bhīmasena, deeply angered in the midst of the Kurus, said with a troubled heart, 'The sons of Pāṇḍu follow the way of women.' (2-64-4)
त्रीणि ज्योतींषि पुरुष इति वै देवलोऽब्रवीत्। अपत्यं कर्म विद्या च यतः सृष्टाः प्रजास्ततः ॥२-६४-५॥
trīṇi jyotīṃṣi puruṣa iti vai devalo'bravīt। apatyaṃ karma vidyā ca yataḥ sṛṣṭāḥ prajāstataḥ ॥2-64-5॥
[त्रीणि (trīṇi) - three; ज्योतींषि (jyotīṃṣi) - lights; पुरुष (puruṣa) - person; इति (iti) - thus; वै (vai) - indeed; देवलः (devalaḥ) - Devala (sage); अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; अपत्यं (apatyaṃ) - offspring; कर्म (karma) - action; विद्या (vidyā) - knowledge; च (ca) - and; यतः (yataḥ) - from which; सृष्टाः (sṛṣṭāḥ) - created; प्रजाः (prajāḥ) - beings; ततः (tataḥ) - from that;]
(Three lights, person, thus indeed Devala said. Offspring, action, and knowledge, from which beings are created from that.)
Devala said, "There are three lights in a person." Offspring, action, and knowledge—these are the sources from which beings are created. (2-64-5)
अमेध्ये वै गतप्राणे शून्ये ज्ञातिभिरुज्झिते। देहे त्रितयमेवैतत्पुरुषस्योपजायते ॥२-६४-६॥
amedhye vai gataprāṇe śūnye jñātibhirujjite. dehe tritayamevaitatpuruṣasyopajāyate ॥2-64-6॥
[अमेध्ये (amedhye) - in the impure; वै (vai) - indeed; गतप्राणे (gataprāṇe) - with departed life; शून्ये (śūnye) - empty; ज्ञातिभिः (jñātibhiḥ) - by relatives; उज्झिते (ujjite) - abandoned; देहे (dehe) - in the body; त्रितयम् (tritayam) - threefold; एव (eva) - only; एतत् (etat) - this; पुरुषस्य (puruṣasya) - of the person; उपजायते (upajāyate) - arises;]
(In the impure, indeed, with departed life, empty, abandoned by relatives, in the body, only this threefold arises of the person.)
When the body is impure, lifeless, empty, and abandoned by relatives, only this threefold (state) arises for the person. (2-64-6)
तन्नो ज्योतिरभिहतं दाराणामभिमर्शनात्। धनञ्जय कथं स्वित्स्यादपत्यमभिमृष्टजम् ॥२-६४-७॥
tanno jyotirabhihataṃ dārāṇāmabhimarśanāt। dhanañjaya kathaṃ svitsyādapatyamabhimṛṣṭajam ॥2-64-7॥
[तत् (tat) - that; नः (naḥ) - to us; ज्योतिः (jyotiḥ) - light; अभिहतम् (abhihatam) - struck; दाराणाम् (dārāṇām) - of the wives; अभिमर्शनात् (abhimarśanāt) - from touching; धनञ्जय (dhanañjaya) - O Dhananjaya; कथम् (katham) - how; स्वित् (svit) - indeed; स्यात् (syāt) - could be; अपत्यम् (apatyam) - offspring; अभिमृष्टजम् (abhimṛṣṭajam) - born from contact;]
(That light struck us from touching the wives. O Dhananjaya, how indeed could offspring be born from contact?)
That light struck us when we touched the wives. O Dhananjaya, how could offspring possibly be born from such contact? (2-64-7)
अर्जुन उवाच॥
arjuna uvāca॥
[अर्जुन (arjuna) - Arjuna; (proper noun); उवाच (uvāca) - said; (from the root 'vac', to speak);]
(Arjuna said;)
Arjuna said.
न चैवोक्ता न चानुक्ता हीनतः परुषा गिरः। भारताः प्रतिजल्पन्ति सदा तूत्तमपूरुषाः ॥२-६४-८॥
na caivoktā na cānuktā hīnataḥ paruṣā giraḥ. bhāratāḥ pratijalpanti sadā tūttamapūruṣāḥ ॥2-64-8॥
[न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; उक्ता (uktā) - spoken; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; अनुक्ता (anuktā) - unspoken; हीनतः (hīnataḥ) - deficiently; परुषा (paruṣā) - harsh; गिरः (giraḥ) - words; भारताः (bhāratāḥ) - descendants of Bharata; प्रतिजल्पन्ति (pratijalpanti) - utter in return; सदा (sadā) - always; तु (tu) - but; उत्तम (uttama) - excellent; पूरुषाः (pūruṣāḥ) - men;]
(Not indeed spoken, nor unspoken, deficiently, harsh words; the descendants of Bharata always utter in return, but excellent men.)
The descendants of Bharata never speak words that are either not spoken or unspoken, deficient, or harsh; they always respond, but only as excellent men. (2-64-8)
स्मरन्ति सुकृतान्येव न वैराणि कृतानि च। सन्तः प्रतिविजानन्तो लब्ध्वा प्रत्ययमात्मनः ॥२-६४-९॥
smaranti sukṛtānyeva na vairāṇi kṛtāni ca। santaḥ prativijānanto labdhvā pratyayam ātmanaḥ ॥2-64-9॥
[स्मरन्ति (smaranti) - they remember; सुकृतानि (sukṛtāni) - good deeds; एव (eva) - only; न (na) - not; वैराणि (vairāṇi) - enmities; कृतानि (kṛtāni) - done (deeds); च (ca) - and; सन्तः (santaḥ) - the virtuous; प्रतिविजानन्तः (prativijānantaḥ) - recognizing; लब्ध्वा (labdhvā) - having obtained; प्रत्ययम् (pratyayam) - conviction; आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - of the self;]
(They remember only good deeds, not enmities done; the virtuous, recognizing (this), having obtained conviction of the self.)
The virtuous remember only good deeds, not the enmities committed; having recognized and gained conviction in themselves. (2-64-9)
भीम उवाच॥
bhīma uvāca॥
[भीम (bhīma) - Bhīma; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]

Bhīma said.
इहैवैतांस्तुरा सर्वान्हन्मि शत्रून्समागतान्। अथ निष्क्रम्य राजेन्द्र समूलान्कृन्धि भारत ॥२-६४-१०॥
ihaivaitāṃsturā sarvānhanmi śatrūnsamāgatān। atha niṣkramya rājendra samūlānkṛndhi bhārata ॥2-64-10॥
[इह (iha) - here; एव (eva) - indeed; एतान् (etān) - these; तुरा (turā) - quickly; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; हन्मि (hanmi) - I slay; शत्रून् (śatrūn) - enemies; समागतान् (samāgatān) - assembled; अथ (atha) - then; निष्क्रम्य (niṣkramya) - having gone out; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king; समूलान् (samūlān) - with roots; कृन्धि (kṛndhi) - cut down; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(Here indeed these quickly all I slay enemies assembled. Then having gone out, O king, with roots cut down, O Bhārata.)
Here itself, I will quickly slay all these assembled enemies. Then, O king, go forth and uproot them completely, O Bhārata. (2-64-10)
किं नो विवदितेनेह किं नः क्लेशेन भारत। अद्यैवैतान्निहन्मीह प्रशाधि वसुधामिमाम् ॥२-६४-११॥
kiṁ no vivaditeneha kiṁ naḥ kleśena bhārata। adyaivaitānnihanmīha praśādhi vasudhāmimām ॥2-64-11॥
[किं (kiṁ) - what; नः (naḥ) - to us; विवदितेन (vivaditena) - by disputing; इह (iha) - here; किं (kiṁ) - what; नः (naḥ) - to us; क्लेशेन (kleśena) - by suffering; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; अद्य (adya) - today; एव (eva) - indeed; एतान् (etān) - these; निहन्मि (nihanmi) - I slay; इह (iha) - here; प्रशाधि (praśādhi) - rule; वसुधाम् (vasudhām) - the earth; इमाम् (imām) - this;]
(What to us by disputing here, what to us by suffering, O Bhārata? Today indeed these I slay here, rule this earth.)
What is the use of disputing here, what is the use of suffering for us, O Bhārata? Let me slay these here today itself and you rule this earth. (2-64-11)
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

इत्युक्त्वा भीमसेनस्तु कनिष्ठैर्भ्रातृभिर्वृतः। मृगमध्ये यथा सिंहो मुहुः परिघमैक्षत ॥२-६४-१२॥
ity uktvā bhīmasenastu kaniṣṭhairbhrātṛbhirvṛtaḥ। mṛgamadhye yathā siṃho muhuḥ parighamaikṣata ॥2-64-12॥
[इति (iti) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having said; भीमसेनः (bhīmasenaḥ) - Bhimasena; तु (tu) - but; कनिष्ठैः (kaniṣṭhaiḥ) - by the younger; भ्रातृभिः (bhrātṛbhiḥ) - by brothers; वृतः (vṛtaḥ) - surrounded; मृगमध्ये (mṛgamadhye) - in the midst of beasts; यथा (yathā) - as; सिंहः (siṃhaḥ) - lion; मुहुः (muhuḥ) - repeatedly; परिघम् (parigham) - around; ऐक्षत (aikṣata) - looked;]
(Thus having spoken, Bhimasena, but surrounded by his younger brothers, in the midst of beasts, as a lion, repeatedly looked around.)
Having said this, Bhimasena, surrounded by his younger brothers, looked around repeatedly like a lion in the midst of beasts. (2-64-12)
सान्त्व्यमानो वीज्यमानः पार्थेनाक्लिष्टकर्मणा। स्विद्यते च महाबाहुरन्तर्दाहेन वीर्यवान् ॥२-६४-१३॥
sāntvyamāno vījyamānaḥ pārthenākliṣṭakarmaṇā। svidyate ca mahābāhurantardāhena vīryavān ॥2-64-13॥
[सान्त्व्यमानः (sāntvyamānaḥ) - being consoled; वीज्यमानः (vījyamānaḥ) - being fanned; पार्थेन (pārthena) - by Pārtha (Arjuna); अक्लिष्टकर्मणा (akliṣṭakarmaṇā) - with unwearied action; स्विद्यते (svidyate) - sweats; च (ca) - and; महाबाहुः (mahābāhuḥ) - the mighty-armed; अन्तर्दाहेन (antardāhena) - with internal burning; वीर्यवान् (vīryavān) - the powerful one;]
(Being consoled, being fanned by Pārtha with unwearied action, the mighty-armed, powerful one sweats and (is) with internal burning.)
Though being consoled and fanned by Arjuna, who acts tirelessly, the mighty-armed hero sweats and burns within. (2-64-13)
क्रुद्धस्य तस्य स्रोतोभ्यः कर्णादिभ्यो नराधिप। सधूमः सस्फुलिङ्गार्चिः पावकः समजायत ॥२-६४-१४॥
kruddhasya tasya srotobhyaḥ karṇādibhyo narādhipa| sadhūmaḥ sasphuliṅgārciḥ pāvakaḥ samajāyata ॥2-64-14॥
[क्रुद्धस्य (kruddhasya) - of the enraged; तस्य (tasya) - his; स्रोतोभ्यः (srotobhyaḥ) - from the streams; कर्णादिभ्यः (karṇādibhyaḥ) - from the ears and others; नराधिप (narādhipa) - O king; सधूमः (sadhūmaḥ) - with smoke; सस्फुलिङ्गार्चिः (sasphuliṅgārciḥ) - with sparks and flames; पावकः (pāvakaḥ) - fire; समजायत (samajāyata) - arose;]
(O king, from his streams such as the ears of the enraged, fire with smoke, with sparks and flames, arose.)
O king, from the streams like the ears of the enraged one, fire with smoke, sparks, and flames arose. (2-64-14)
भ्रुकुटीपुटदुष्प्रेक्ष्यमभवत्तस्य तन्मुखम्। युगान्तकाले सम्प्राप्ते कृतान्तस्येव रूपिणः ॥२-६४-१५॥
bhrukuṭī-puṭa-duṣprekṣyam abhavat tasya tan-mukham। yugānta-kāle samprāpte kṛtāntasya iva rūpiṇaḥ ॥2-64-15॥
[भ्रुकुटीपुट (bhrukuṭī-puṭa) - eyebrow-fold; दुष्प्रेक्ष्यम् (duṣprekṣyam) - difficult-to-look-at; अभवत् (abhavat) - became; तस्य (tasya) - his; तत् (tat) - that; मुखम् (mukham) - face; युगान्तकाले (yugānta-kāle) - at the time of the end of an age; सम्प्राप्ते (samprāpte) - having arrived; कृतान्तस्य (kṛtāntasya) - of Death (Yama); इव (iva) - like; रूपिणः (rūpiṇaḥ) - in form;]
(His that face became difficult to look at due to the folds of the eyebrows, like the form of Death (Yama) having arrived at the end of an age.)
His face, furrowed with the folds of his brows, became dreadful to behold, like the very form of Death manifest at the end of an age. (2-64-15)
युधिष्ठिरस्तमावार्य बाहुना बाहुशालिनम्। मैवमित्यब्रवीच्चैनं जोषमास्स्वेति भारत ॥२-६४-१६॥
yudhiṣṭhiras tam āvārya bāhunā bāhuśālinam। maivam ity abravīc cainaṃ joṣam ās sveti bhārata ॥2-64-16॥
[युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhishthira; तम् (tam) - him; आवार्य (āvārya) - having restrained; बाहुना (bāhunā) - with (his) arm; बाहुशालिनम् (bāhuśālinam) - the strong-armed one; मैवम् (maivam) - not thus; इति (iti) - thus; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; च (ca) - and; एनम् (enam) - to him; जोषम् (joṣam) - calmly; आस्स्व (ās sva) - remain; इति (iti) - thus; भारत (bhārata) - O Bharata;]
(Yudhishthira, having restrained him with (his) arm, (restrained) the strong-armed one. "Not thus," thus said to him, "Remain calmly," O Bharata.)
Yudhishthira restrained the strong-armed one with his arm and said to him, "Do not act thus. Remain calm," O Bharata. (2-64-16)
निवार्य तं महाबाहुं कोपसंरक्तलोचनम्। पितरं समुपातिष्ठद्धृतराष्ट्रं कृताञ्जलिः ॥२-६४-१७॥
nivārya taṃ mahābāhuṃ kopasaṃraktalocanam। pitaraṃ samupātiṣṭhaddhṛtarāṣṭraṃ kṛtāñjaliḥ ॥2-64-17॥
[निवार्य (nivārya) - having restrained; तम् (tam) - him; महाबाहुम् (mahābāhum) - mighty-armed; कोपसंरक्तलोचनम् (kopasaṃraktalocanam) - with eyes reddened by anger; पितरम् (pitaram) - father; समुपातिष्ठत् (samupātiṣṭhat) - approached; धृतराष्ट्रम् (dhṛtarāṣṭram) - Dhritarashtra; कृताञ्जलिः (kṛtāñjaliḥ) - with joined palms;]
(Having restrained him, the mighty-armed, with eyes reddened by anger, (he) approached his father Dhritarashtra with joined palms.)
Having restrained the mighty-armed one whose eyes were reddened with anger, he approached his father Dhritarashtra with joined palms. (2-64-17)
