समुद्रं स समासाद्य वारुणिर्भगवानृषिः। उवाच सहितान्देवानृषींश्चैव समागतान् ॥०३-१०३-१॥
samudraṃ sa samāsādya vāruṇirbhagavān ṛṣiḥ। uvāca sahitān devān ṛṣīṃścaiva samāgatān ॥03-103-1॥
[समुद्रं (samudram) - ocean; sea; स (sa) - he; समासाद्य (samāsādya) - having approached; वारुणिः (vāruṇiḥ) - son of Varuṇa; भगवान् (bhagavān) - venerable; illustrious; ऋषिः (ṛṣiḥ) - sage; उवाच (uvāca) - said; spoke; सहितान् (sahitān) - assembled together; united; देवान् (devān) - the gods; ऋषीम् (ṛṣīn) - the sages; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; truly; समागतान् (samāgatān) - having come together; gathered;]
(He, having approached the ocean, the illustrious sage, son of Varuṇa, spoke to the gods and sages who had assembled and come together.)
He, the illustrious sage, son of Varuṇa, having reached the ocean, spoke to the assembled gods and sages who had gathered there. (03-103-1)
एष लोकहितार्थं वै पिबामि वरुणालयम्। भवद्भिर्यदनुष्ठेयं तच्छीघ्रं संविधीयताम् ॥०३-१०३-२॥
eṣa lokahitārthaṃ vai pibāmi varuṇālayam। bhavadbhiryadanuṣṭheyaṃ tacchīghraṃ saṃvidhīyatām॥03-103-2॥
[एष (eṣa) - this; लोकहितार्थं (lokahitārtham) - for the good of the world; वै (vai) - indeed; पिबामि (pibāmi) - I drink; वरुणालयम् (varuṇālayam) - abode of Varuṇa (water); भवद्भिः (bhavadbhiḥ) - by you (all); यद् (yad) - what; अनुष्ठेयं (anuṣṭheyam) - should be performed; तत् (tat) - that; शीघ्रं (śīghram) - quickly; संविधीयताम् (saṃvidhīyatām) - let it be arranged;]
(This for the welfare of the world indeed I drink the abode of Varuṇa. By you what should be performed that quickly let it be arranged. (03-103-2))
I am indeed drinking the water (the abode of Varuṇa) for the welfare of the world. Let that which is to be done by you all be quickly arranged. (03-103-2)
एतावदुक्त्वा वचनं मैत्रावरुणिरच्युतः। समुद्रमपिबत्क्रुद्धः सर्वलोकस्य पश्यतः ॥०३-१०३-३॥
etāvad uktvā vacanaṃ maitrāvaruṇir acyutaḥ। samudram apibat kruddhaḥ sarvalokasya paśyataḥ ॥03-103-3॥
[एतावत् (etāvat) - so much; to this extent; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having said; वचनम् (vacanam) - speech; मैत्रावरुणिः (maitrāvaruṇiḥ) - the son of Mitrāvaruṇa; अच्युतः (acyutaḥ) - the infallible one; समुद्रम् (samudram) - the ocean; अपिबत् (apibat) - drank; क्रुद्धः (kruddhaḥ) - angry; सर्वलोकस्य (sarvalokasya) - of all beings; पश्यतः (paśyataḥ) - while watching;]
(So much having said speech, the son of Mitrāvaruṇa, the infallible one, the ocean drank, angry, of all beings, while watching.)
Having thus spoken, the son of Mitrāvaruṇa, the infallible one, in his anger drank up the ocean while all beings watched. (03-103-3)
पीयमानं समुद्रं तु दृष्ट्वा देवाः सवासवाः। विस्मयं परमं जग्मुः स्तुतिभिश्चाप्यपूजयन् ॥०३-१०३-४॥
pīyamānaṃ samudraṃ tu dṛṣṭvā devāḥ savāsavāḥ। vismayaṃ paramaṃ jagmuḥ stutibhiś cāpy apūjayan ॥03-103-4॥
[पीयमानं (pīyamānam) - being drunk; (being consumed; समुद्रं (samudram) - ocean; तु (tu) - but; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; देवाः (devāḥ) - gods; सवासवाः (savāsavāḥ) - with Indra; विस्मयं (vismayam) - wonder; परमं (paramam) - supreme; जग्मुः (jagmuḥ) - they attained; स्तुतिभिः (stutibhiḥ) - with praises; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; अपूजयन् (apūjayan) - they honored;]
(Having seen the ocean being drunk, the gods with Indra attained supreme wonder and also honored (him) with praises.)
Seeing the ocean being consumed, the gods along with Indra were filled with supreme amazement and honored (him) with praises. (03-103-4)
त्वं नस्त्राता विधाता च लोकानां लोकभावनः। त्वत्प्रसादात्समुच्छेदं न गच्छेत्सामरं जगत् ॥०३-१०३-५॥
tvaṃ nastrātā vidhātā ca lokānāṃ lokabhāvanaḥ। tvatprasādātsamucchedaṃ na gacchetsāmaraṃ jagat ॥03-103-5॥
[त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; नः (naḥ) - our; त्राता (trātā) - protector; विधाता (vidhātā) - creator; च (ca) - and; लोकानाम् (lokānām) - of the worlds; लोकभावनः (lokabhāvanaḥ) - producer of existence of the worlds; त्वत् (tvat) - by you; प्रसादात् (prasādāt) - by favor; समुच्छेदम् (samucchedam) - complete destruction; न (na) - not; गच्छेत् (gacchet) - would go; सामरम् (sāmaraṃ) - with the gods; जगत् (jagat) - the world;]
(You our protector (and) creator and producer of the existence of the worlds; by your favor to complete destruction not would go with (even) the gods the world.)
You are our protector and creator, and the one who brings forth the existence of the worlds; by your favor, the world together with the gods would not go to complete destruction. (03-103-5)
सम्पूज्यमानस्त्रिदशैर्महात्मा; गन्धर्वतूर्येषु नदत्सु सर्वशः। दिव्यैश्च पुष्पैरवकीर्यमाणो; महार्णवं निःसलिलं चकार ॥०३-१०३-६॥
sampūjyamānas tridaśair mahātmā; gandharva-tūryeṣu nadatsu sarvaśaḥ. divyaiś ca puṣpair avakīryamāṇo; mahārṇavaṃ niḥsalilaṃ cakāra ॥03-103-6॥
[सम्पूज्यमानः (sampūjyamānaḥ) - being worshipped; त्रिदशैः (tridaśaiḥ) - by the gods; महात्मा (mahātmā) - the great-souled one; गन्धर्व-तूर्येषु (gandharva-tūryeṣu) - among Gandharva musical instruments; नदत्सु (nadatsu) - resounding; सर्वशः (sarvaśaḥ) - on all sides; दिव्यैः (divyaiḥ) - with divine; च (ca) - and; पुष्पैः (puṣpaiḥ) - flowers; अवकीर्यमाणः (avakīryamāṇaḥ) - being showered; महार्णवम् (mahārṇavam) - the great ocean; निःसलिलम् (niḥsalilam) - without water; चकार (cakāra) - made;]
(Being worshipped by the gods, the great-souled one, as Gandharva music resounded on all sides, and being showered with divine flowers, made the great ocean without water.)
As he was worshipped by the gods, with Gandharva music resounding everywhere and divine flowers showered upon him, the great-souled one made the great ocean dry. (03-103-6)
दृष्ट्वा कृतं निःसलिलं महार्णवं; सुराः समस्ताः परमप्रहृष्टाः। प्रगृह्य दिव्यानि वरायुधानि; तान्दानवाञ्जघ्नुरदीनसत्त्वाः ॥०३-१०३-७॥
dṛṣṭvā kṛtaṃ niḥsalilaṃ mahārṇavaṃ; surāḥ samastāḥ paramaprahṛṣṭāḥ. pragṛhya divyāni varāyudhāni; tāndānavāñjaghnuradīnasattvāḥ ॥03-103-7॥
[दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; कृतं (kṛtam) (kṛtam) - made; निःसलिलं (niḥsalilam) (niḥsalilam) - waterless; महार्णवं (mahārṇavam) (mahārṇavam) - great ocean; सुराः (surāḥ) (surāḥ) - gods; समस्ताः (samastāḥ) (samastāḥ) - all; परमप्रहृष्टाः (paramaprahṛṣṭāḥ) (paramaprahṛṣṭāḥ) - exceedingly delighted; प्रगृह्य (pragṛhya) (pragṛhya) - having taken up; दिव्यानि (divyāni) (divyāni) - divine; वरायुधानि (varāyudhāni) (varāyudhāni) - excellent weapons; तान् (tān) (tān) - them; दानवान् (dānavān) (dānavān) - the Dānavas; जघ्नुः (jaghnuḥ) (jaghnuḥ) - struck; अदीनसत्त्वाः (adīnasattvāḥ) (adīnasattvāḥ) - with unshaken spirits;]
(Having seen the great ocean made waterless, all the gods, exceedingly delighted, having taken up the divine excellent weapons, struck those Dānavas with unshaken spirits.)
When they saw the great ocean made waterless, all the gods, extremely delighted, bravely took up their divine, excellent weapons and attacked the Dānavas. (03-103-7)
ते वध्यमानास्त्रिदशैर्महात्मभि; र्महाबलैर्वेगिभिरुन्नदद्भिः। न सेहिरे वेगवतां महात्मनां; वेगं तदा धारयितुं दिवौकसाम् ॥०३-१०३-८॥
te vadhyamānās tridaśair mahātmabhiḥ; mahābalair vegibhir unnadadbhiḥ. na sehire vegavatāṃ mahātmanāṃ; vegaṃ tadā dhārayituṃ divaukasām ॥03-103-8॥
[ते (te) - they; वध्यमानाः (vadhyamānāḥ) - being slain; त्रिदशैः (tridaśaiḥ) - by the thirty gods; महात्मभिः (mahātmabhiḥ) - by the great-souled; महाबलैः (mahābalaiḥ) - by the very powerful; वेगिभिः (vegibhiḥ) - by the swift; उन्नदद्भिः (unnadadbhiḥ) - by (those) making noise; न (na) - not; सेहिरे (sehire) - endured; वेगवताम् (vegavatām) - of those possessing force; महात्मनाम् (mahātmanām) - of the great-souled; वेगम् (vegam) - force; तदा (tadā) - then; धारयितुम् (dhārayitum) - to withstand; दिवौकसाम् (divaukasām) - of the dwellers of heaven;]
(They, being slain by the thirty gods, by the great-souled, very powerful, swift, and roaring ones, did not endure the force of the great-souled, forceful dwellers of heaven, then, to withstand.)
Those beings, being slain by the thirty gods—great-souled, very powerful, swift, and resounding—they were unable to withstand at that time the might of those forceful and noble dwellers of heaven. (03-103-8)
ते वध्यमानास्त्रिदशैर्दानवा भीमनिस्वनाः। चक्रुः सुतुमुलं युद्धं मुहूर्तमिव भारत ॥०३-१०३-९॥
te vadhyamānās tridaśair dānavā bhīma-nisvanāḥ। cakruḥ sutumulaṃ yuddhaṃ muhūrtam iva bhārata॥03-103-9॥
[ते (te) - they; वध्यमानाः (vadhyamānāḥ) - being slain; त्रिदशैः (tridaśaiḥ) - by the gods; दानवाः (dānavāḥ) - the dānavas; भीमनिस्वनाः (bhīma-nisvanāḥ) - with terrible sound; चक्रुः (cakruḥ) - made; सुतुमुलम् (sutumulam) - very tumultuous; युद्धम् (yuddham) - battle; मुहूर्तम् (muhūrtam) - for a moment; इव (iva) - as if; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(They, being slain by the gods, the dānavas with terrible sound, made a very tumultuous battle, for a moment, as if, O Bhārata.)

ते पूर्वं तपसा दग्धा मुनिभिर्भावितात्मभिः। यतमानाः परं शक्त्या त्रिदशैर्विनिषूदिताः ॥०३-१०३-१०॥
te pūrvaṃ tapasā dagdhā munibhirbhāvitātmabhiḥ. yatamānāḥ paraṃ śaktyā tridaśairviniṣūditāḥ ॥03-103-10॥
[ते (te) - they; पूर्वं (pūrvaṃ) - formerly; तपसा (tapasā) - by asceticism; दग्धा (dagdhā) - burnt; मुनिभिः (munibhiḥ) - by sages; भावितात्मभिः (bhāvitātmabhiḥ) - whose selves are purified; यतमानाः (yatamānāḥ) - striving; परं (paraṃ) - supreme; शक्त्या (śaktyā) - with power; त्रिदशैः (tridaśaiḥ) - by the gods; विनिषूदिताः (viniṣūditāḥ) - utterly destroyed;]
(They formerly by asceticism burnt by sages whose selves are purified, striving with supreme power, by the gods utterly destroyed.)
They, having previously been burned by the asceticism of sages whose selves are purified, and though striving with utmost power, were completely destroyed by the gods. (03-103-10)
ते हेमनिष्काभरणाः कुण्डलाङ्गदधारिणः। निहत्य बह्वशोभन्त पुष्पिता इव किंशुकाः ॥०३-१०३-११॥
te hemaniṣkābharaṇāḥ kuṇḍalāṅgada-dhāriṇaḥ। nihatya bahvaśobhanta puṣpitā iva kiṃśukāḥ॥03-103-11॥
[ते (te) - they; हेम-निष्क-आभरणाः (hema-niṣka-ābharaṇāḥ) - adorned with gold coins as ornaments; कुण्डल-आङ्गद-धारिणः (kuṇḍala-āṅgada-dhāriṇaḥ) - wearers of earrings and armlets; निहत्य (nihatya) - having slain; बहु (bahu) - many; अशोभन्त (aśobhanta) - shone; पुष्पिताः (puṣpitāḥ) - blossomed; इव (iva) - like; किंशुकाः (kiṃśukāḥ) - kimshuka trees;]
(They, adorned with gold coin ornaments, wearers of earrings and armlets, having slain many, shone, blossomed like kiṃśuka trees.)

हतशेषास्ततः केचित्कालेया मनुजोत्तम। विदार्य वसुधां देवीं पातालतलमाश्रिताः ॥०३-१०३-१२॥
hataśeṣās tataḥ kecit kāleyā manujottama। vidārya vasudhāṃ devīṃ pātālatalam āśritāḥ ॥03-103-12॥
[हतशेषाः (hataśeṣāḥ) - those remaining after being slain; ततः (tataḥ) - then; केचित् (kecit) - some; कालेयाः (kāleyāḥ) - the Kāleyas (children of Kālī or Kāla); मनुजोत्तम (manujottama) - O best of men; विदार्य (vidārya) - having pierced; वसुधां (vasudhām) - the earth; देवीं (devīṃ) - the goddess; पातालतलम् (pātālatalam) - the realm of the netherworld; आश्रिताः (āśritāḥ) - having taken refuge;]
(Those remaining after being slain then, some Kāleyas, O best of men, having pierced the goddess Earth, took refuge in the realm of the netherworld.)

निहतान्दानवान्दृष्ट्वा त्रिदशा मुनिपुङ्गवम्। तुष्टुवुर्विविधैर्वाक्यैरिदं चैवाब्रुवन्वचः ॥०३-१०३-१३॥
nihatān dānavān dṛṣṭvā tridaśā munipuṅgavam। tuṣṭuvur vividhair vākyair idaṃ caivābruvan vacaḥ ॥03-103-13॥
[निहतान् (nihatān) - slain; (having been) destroyed; दानवान् (dānavān) - demons; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; त्रिदशाः (tridaśāḥ) - the gods; मुनिपुङ्गवम् (munipuṅgavam) - the foremost sage; तुष्टुवुः (tuṣṭuvur) - they praised; विविधैः (vividhaiḥ) - with various; वाक्यैः (vākyaiḥ) - statements; speeches; इदं (idaṃ) - this; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; अब्रुवन् (abruvan) - they spoke; वचः (vacaḥ) - word; speech;]
(Having seen the demons slain, the gods praised the foremost sage with various statements and indeed spoke these words.)
When the gods saw the demons slain, they praised the foremost sage with various words and also said these words. (03-103-13)
त्वत्प्रसादान्महाभाग लोकैः प्राप्तं महत्सुखम्। त्वत्तेजसा च निहताः कालेयाः क्रूरविक्रमाः ॥०३-१०३-१४॥
tvatprasādān mahābhāga lokaiḥ prāptaṃ mahatsukham। tvattejasā ca nihatāḥ kāleyāḥ krūravikramāḥ ॥03-103-14॥
[त्वत्-प्रसादात् (tvat-prasādāt) - by your favor; महाभाग (mahābhāga) - O greatly fortunate one; लोकैः (lokaiḥ) - by the peoples; प्राप्तं (prāptam) - obtained; महत्-सुखम् (mahat-sukham) - great happiness; त्वत्-तेजसा (tvat-tejasā) - by your energy; च (ca) - and; निहताः (nihatāḥ) - have been slain; कालेयाः (kāleyāḥ) - the Kāleyas; क्रूर-विक्रमाः (krūra-vikramāḥ) - of cruel prowess;]
(By your favor, O greatly fortunate one, great happiness has been obtained by the peoples; and by your energy, the Kāleyas of cruel prowess have been slain.)
O greatly fortunate one, by your favor the peoples have gained great happiness; and by your energy, the cruelly powerful Kāleyas have been destroyed. (03-103-14)
पूरयस्व महाबाहो समुद्रं लोकभावन। यत्त्वया सलिलं पीतं तदस्मिन्पुनरुत्सृज ॥०३-१०३-१५॥
pūrayasva mahābāho samudraṁ lokabhāvana। yat tvayā salilaṁ pītaṁ tad asmin punar utsṛja ॥03-103-15॥

(Fill, O mighty-armed, the ocean, O nourisher of the world. Which water by you was drunk, that in this again release.)
O mighty-armed one, O nourisher of the world, fill the ocean. Release again into it the water which you drank. (03-103-15)
एवमुक्तः प्रत्युवाच भगवान्मुनिपुङ्गवः। जीर्णं तद्धि मया तोयमुपायोऽन्यः प्रचिन्त्यताम् ॥ पूरणार्थं समुद्रस्य भवद्भिर्यत्नमास्थितैः ॥०३-१०३-१६॥
evam-uktaḥ pratyuvāca bhagavān munipuṅgavaḥ। jīrṇaṃ taddhi mayā toyam upāyo'nyaḥ pracintyatām॥ pūraṇārthaṃ samudrasya bhavadbhir yatnam āsthitaiḥ॥03-103-16॥
[एवमुक्तः (evam-uktaḥ) - thus addressed; प्रत्युवाच (pratyuvāca) - replied; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the illustrious one; मुनिपुङ्गवः (munipuṅgavaḥ) - best of sages; जीर्णं (jīrṇam) - decayed; तत् (tat) - that; हि (hi) - indeed; मया (mayā) - by me; तोयम् (toyam) - water; उपायः (upāyaḥ) - means; अन्यः (anyaḥ) - another; प्रचिन्त्यताम् (pracintyatām) - let (it) be considered; पूरणार्थम् (pūraṇārtham) - for the filling; समुद्रस्य (samudrasya) - of the ocean; भवद्भिः (bhavadbhiḥ) - by you (all); यत्नम् (yatnam) - effort; आस्थितैः (āsthitaiḥ) - being undertaken;]
(Thus addressed, the illustrious best of sages replied; that water, indeed, by me is worn out; let another means be considered; for the purpose of filling the ocean, effort by you all being undertaken.)
Thus addressed, the illustrious sage replied: "That water I have is exhausted; let another method be considered. For the purpose of filling the ocean, let the effort be undertaken by you all." (03-103-16)
एतच्छ्रुत्वा तु वचनं महर्षेर्भावितात्मनः। विस्मिताश्च विषण्णाश्च बभूवुः सहिताः सुराः ॥०३-१०३-१७॥
etat-śrutvā tu vacanaṃ maharṣeḥ bhāvitātmanaḥ। vismitāś ca viṣaṇṇāś ca babhūvuḥ sahitāḥ surāḥ॥03-103-17॥
[एतत् (etat) (etat) - this; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) (śrutvā) - having heard; तु (tu) (tu) - but; वचनम् (vacanam) (vacanam) - speech; महर्षेः (maharṣeḥ) (maharṣeḥ) - of the great sage; भावितात्मनः (bhāvitātmanaḥ) (bhāvitātmanaḥ) - of the devoted/spiritually advanced one; विस्मिताः (vismitāḥ) (vismitāḥ) - astonished; च (ca) (ca) - and; विषण्णाः (viṣaṇṇāḥ) (viṣaṇṇāḥ) - dejected; च (ca) (ca) - and; बभूवुः (babhūvuḥ) (babhūvuḥ) - became; सहिताः (sahitāḥ) (sahitāḥ) - together; सुराः (surāḥ) (surāḥ) - the gods;]
(Having heard this speech of the great sage, of the spiritually advanced one, the gods together became astonished and dejected.)
On hearing these words spoken by the great sage of deep spiritual realization, the assembled gods became both astonished and dejected. (03-103-17)
परस्परमनुज्ञाप्य प्रणम्य मुनिपुङ्गवम्। प्रजाः सर्वा महाराज विप्रजग्मुर्यथागतम् ॥०३-१०३-१८॥
parasparam-anujñāpya praṇamya muni-puṅgavam। prajāḥ sarvā mahā-rāja viprajagmur-yathāgatam॥03-103-18॥
[परस्परम् (parasparam) - mutually; अनुज्ञाप्य (anujñāpya) - having taken leave of; प्रणम्य (praṇamya) - having bowed to; मुनिपुङ्गवम् (munipuṅgavam) - the foremost sage; प्रजाः (prajāḥ) - the people; सर्वाः (sarvāḥ) - all; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; विप्रजग्मुः (viprajagmuḥ) - departed; यथागतम् (yathāgatam) - as they had come;]
(Mutually having taken leave, having bowed to the foremost sage, all the people, O great king, departed as they had come.)
After taking mutual leave and bowing to the foremost sage, O great king, all the people departed just as they had arrived. (03-103-18)
त्रिदशा विष्णुना सार्धमुपजग्मुः पितामहम्। पूरणार्थं समुद्रस्य मन्त्रयित्वा पुनः पुनः ॥ ऊचुः प्राञ्जलयः सर्वे सागरस्याभिपूरणम् ॥०३-१०३-१९॥

(The thirty (gods), with Viṣṇu together, approached Brahmā; for the purpose of filling of the ocean, having deliberated again and again; they spoke, with folded hands, all, the complete filling of the ocean.)
The thirty gods, together with Viṣṇu, approached Brahmā. After repeatedly consulting for the purpose of filling the ocean, they all, with folded hands, requested the complete replenishment of the ocean. (03-103-19)
