tān uvāca sametān tu brahmā lokapitāmahaḥ। gacchadhvaṃ vibudhāḥ sarve yathākāmaṃ yathepsitam ॥03-104-1॥
[तान् (tān) - them; उवाच (uvāca) - spoke; समेतान् (sametān) - assembled; तु (tu) - but; ब्रह्मा (brahmā) - Brahmā; लोकपितामहः (lokapitāmahaḥ) - Grandsire of the worlds; गच्छध्वं (gacchadhvaṃ) - go (you all); विबुधाः (vibudhāḥ) - gods; सर्वे (sarve) - all; यथाकामं (yathākāmam) - as (your) wish; यथेप्सितम् (yathepsitam) - as desired;]
(To them, assembled, indeed, Brahmā, Grandsire of the worlds, spoke: "Go, gods, all, as (your) wish, as desired." (03-104-1))
Brahmā, the Grandsire of the worlds, spoke to those who had assembled: "All of you gods, go wherever you wish, as you desire." (03-104-1)
महता कालयोगेन प्रकृतिं यास्यतेऽर्णवः। ज्ञातीन्वै कारणं कृत्वा महाराज्ञो भगीरथात् ॥०३-१०४-२॥
mahatā kālayogena prakṛtiṃ yāsyate'ṇavaḥ। jñātīn vai kāraṇaṃ kṛtvā mahārājño bhagīrathāt ॥03-104-2॥
[महता (mahatā) - by the great; by greatness; कालयोगेन (kālayogena) - by the conjunction of time; by the coming together of time; प्रकृतिं (prakṛtim) - to the original state; to nature; यास्यते (yāsyate) - will go; will proceed; अर्णवः (aṇavaḥ) - the ocean; ज्ञातीन् (jñātīn) - kinsmen; relatives; वै (vai) - indeed; कारणं (kāraṇam) - as a cause; for a reason; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having made; having taken; महाराज्ञः (mahārājñaḥ) - of the great king; भगीरथात् (bhagīrathāt) - from Bhagiratha (the great king Bhagiratha);]
(By the great conjunction of time, the ocean will return to its original state; having taken the great king Bhagiratha's kinsmen indeed as the cause.)
By the mighty operation of time, the ocean will return to its natural state, having used the relatives of the great king Bhagiratha indeed as the reason. (3-104-2)

kathaṃ vai jñātayo brahman kāraṇaṃ cātra kiṃ mune। kathaṃ samudraḥ pūrṇaś ca bhagīrathapariśramāt ॥03-104-3॥

(How indeed, relatives, O Brāhmaṇa, cause, and here, what, O sage? How was the ocean full also from Bhagiratha's exertion?)
O Brāhmaṇa, how indeed did the relatives (come to be)? What was the cause here, O sage? And how did the ocean become full through the exertion of Bhagiratha? (03-104-3)
एतदिच्छाम्यहं श्रोतुं विस्तरेण तपोधन। कथ्यमानं त्वया विप्र राज्ञां चरितमुत्तमम् ॥०३-१०४-४॥
etadicchāmyahaṃ śrotuṃ vistareṇa tapodhana। kathyamānaṃ tvayā vipra rājñāṃ caritamuttamam॥03-104-4॥
[एतत् (etat) - this; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - I wish; अहम् (aham) - I; श्रोतुम् (śrotum) - to hear; विस्तरेण (vistareṇa) - in detail; तपोधन (tapodhana) - O one rich in austerity; कथ्यमानम् (kathyamānam) - being narrated; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; विप्र (vipra) - O Brāhmaṇa; राज्ञाम् (rājñām) - of the kings; चरितम् (caritam) - deed; उत्तमम् (uttamam) - excellent;]
(This I wish I to hear in detail, O one rich in austerity, being narrated by you, O Brāhmaṇa, the excellent deed of the kings.)
O sage rich in austerities, I wish to hear this in detail—the excellent deeds of the kings as narrated by you, O Brāhmaṇa. (03-104-4)

evam-uktas tu viprendro dharmarājñā mahātmanā। kathayām āsa māhātmyaṃ sagarasya mahātmanaḥ॥03-104-5॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - having been addressed; तु (tu) - but; विप्रेन्द्रः (viprendraḥ) - the lord of Brāhmaṇas; धर्मराज्ञा (dharmarājñā) - by the king of Dharma; महात्मना (mahātmanā) - by the great-souled one; कथयाम् आस (kathayām āsa) - he began to narrate; माहात्म्यम् (māhātmyaṃ) - greatness; सगरस्य (sagarasya) - of Sagara; महात्मनः (mahātmanaḥ) - the great-souled;]
(Thus, having been addressed, but the lord of Brāhmaṇas by the great-souled king of Dharma, he began to narrate the greatness of Sagara the great-souled.)
Thus, when addressed by the great-souled king Yama, the chief of Brāhmaṇas began to narrate the greatness of the noble Sagara. (03-104-5)

King Sagara, born in the Ikṣvāku dynasty, endowed with beauty, virtue, and strength, was powerful but without a son. (03-104-6)
स हैहयान्समुत्साद्य तालजङ्घांश्च भारत। वशे च कृत्वा राज्ञोऽन्यान्स्वराज्यमन्वशासत ॥०३-१०४-७॥
sa haihayān samutsādya tālajaṅghāṁś ca bhārata। vaśe ca kṛtvā rājño'nyān svarājyam anvaśāsata ॥03-104-7॥

sa putrakāmo nṛpatistatāpa sumahattapaḥ। patnībhyāṃ saha rājendra kailāsaṃ girimāśritaḥ ॥03-104-9॥

शङ्करं भवमीशानं शूलपानिं पिनाकिनम्। त्र्यम्बकं शिवमुग्रेशं बहुरूपमुमापतिम् ॥०३-१०४-११॥
śaṅkaraṃ bhavam-īśānaṃ śūla-pāniṃ pinākinam। tryambakaṃ śivam-ugreśaṃ bahurūpam-umāpatiṃ ॥03-104-11॥

(He, having indeed seen him, the bestower of boons, together with his two wives, the king, having bowed down, mighty-armed, for the sake of a son, requested.)
As soon as the king, accompanied by his two wives, saw the bestower of boons, the mighty-armed king bowed down and requested him for a son. (03-104-12)
तं प्रीतिमान्हरः प्राह सभार्यं नृपसत्तमम्। यस्मिन्वृतो मुहूर्तेऽहं त्वयेह नृपते वरम् ॥०३-१०४-१३॥
taṃ prītimān haraḥ prāha sabhāryaṃ nṛpasattamam। yasmin vṛto muhūrte'ham tvayeha nṛpate varam ॥03-104-13॥

(Him full of affection Hara said with wife O best among kings. In which chosen moment I by you here O king (am) boon.)
Hara, full of affection, said to him with his wife, "O best of kings, at the very moment when I was chosen by you here, O king, (you have received) the boon." (03-104-13)
षष्टिः पुत्रसहस्राणि शूराः समरदर्पिताः। एकस्यां सम्भविष्यन्ति पत्न्यां तव नरोत्तम ॥०३-१०४-१४॥
ṣaṣṭiḥ putrasahasrāṇi śūrāḥ samarar-darpitāḥ। ekasyāṃ sambhaviṣyanti patnyāṃ tava narottama॥03-104-14॥
[षष्टिः (ṣaṣṭiḥ) - sixty; पुत्रसहस्राणि (putrasahasrāṇi) - thousand sons; शूराः (śūrāḥ) - valiant; समरदर्पिताः (samara-darpitāḥ) - proud (or haughty) in battle; एकस्यां (ekasyām) - in one; सम्भविष्यन्ति (sambhaviṣyanti) - will be born; पत्न्यां (patnyām) - in the wife; तव (tava) - your; नरोत्तम (narottama) - best of men;]
(Sixty thousand sons, valiant, proud in battle, in one (will) be born in the wife of yours, O best of men.)
O best of men, sixty thousand valiant sons, proud in battle, will be born to you from one wife. (03-104-14)
ते चैव सर्वे सहिताः क्षयं यास्यन्ति पार्थिव। एको वंशधरः शूर एकस्यां सम्भविष्यति ॥ एवमुक्त्वा तु तं रुद्रस्तत्रैवान्तरधीयत ॥०३-१०४-१५॥
te caiva sarve sahitāḥ kṣayaṃ yāsyanti pārthiva. eko vaṃśadharaḥ śūra ekasyāṃ sambhaviṣyati ॥ evamuktvā tu taṃ rudrastatraivāntaradhīyata ॥03-104-15॥
[ते (te) - they; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; सर्वे (sarve) - all; सहिताः (sahitāḥ) - together; क्षयम् (kṣayam) - destruction; यास्यन्ति (yāsyanti) - will go; पार्थिव (pārthiva) - O king; एकः (ekaḥ) - one; वंशधरः (vaṃśadharaḥ) - lineage-bearer; शूरः (śūraḥ) - valiant; एकस्याम् (ekasyām) - from one (woman); सम्भविष्यति (sambhaviṣyati) - will be born; एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; तु (tu) - but; तम् (tam) - him; रुद्रः (rudraḥ) - Rudra; तत्र (tatra) - there; एव (eva) - indeed; अन्तरधीयत (antaradhīyata) - disappeared;]
(They and indeed all together will go to destruction, O king. One lineage-bearer, valiant, from one (woman) will be born. Thus having spoken, but him Rudra there indeed disappeared. (03-104-15))
O king, all of them together will meet their destruction; but one valiant lineage-bearer will be born of one (woman). Having thus spoken, Rudra immediately disappeared there. (03-104-15)
स चापि सगरो राजा जगाम स्वं निवेशनम्। पत्नीभ्यां सहितस्तात सोऽतिहृष्टमनास्तदा ॥०३-१०४-१६॥
sa cāpi sagaro rājā jagāma svaṃ niveśanam। patnībhyāṃ sahitastāta so'tihṛṣṭamanāstadā ॥03-104-16॥

(He and also Sagara king went to his own residence, together with (his) two wives, O dear, he with exceedingly delighted mind then.)
And King Sagara also went to his own residence along with his two wives, O dear, with a mind exceedingly delighted at that time. (03-104-16)
तस्याथ मनुजश्रेष्ठ ते भार्ये कमलेक्षणे। वैदर्भी चैव शैब्या च गर्भिण्यौ सम्बभूवतुः ॥०३-१०४-१७॥
tasyātha manujaśreṣṭha te bhārye kamalekṣaṇe। vaidarbhī caiva śaibyā ca garbhiṇyau sambabhūvatuḥ॥03-104-17॥

(Then, O best of men, of you, the wives, the lotus-eyed Vaidarbhi and Shaibya, indeed both became pregnant.)
Then, O best of men, your wives, the lotus-eyed Vaidarbhi and Shaibya, both became pregnant. (03-104-17)
ततः कालेन वैदर्भी गर्भालाबुं व्यजायत। शैब्या च सुषुवे पुत्रं कुमारं देवरूपिणम् ॥०३-१०४-१८॥
tataḥ kālena vaidarbhī garbhālābuṃ vyajāyata. śaibyā ca suṣuve putraṃ kumāraṃ devarūpiṇam ॥03-104-18॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; कालेन (kālena) - in due time; वैदर्भी (vaidarbhī) - Vaidarbhi (the princess of Vidarbha); गर्भालाबुं (garbhālābum) - gourd-like fruit (metaphor for womb, pregnancy); व्यजायत (vyajāyata) - gave birth; शैब्या (śaibyā) - Shaibya (the queen of Shaibya); च (ca) - and; सुषुवे (suṣuve) - gave birth; पुत्रं (putraṃ) - son; कुमारं (kumāraṃ) - child; देवरूपिणम् (devarūpiṇam) - having the form of a god;]
(Then in due time, Vaidarbhi gave birth to a gourd-like fruit. Shaibya also gave birth to a son, a child having the form of a god.)
Then in due course, Vaidarbhi gave birth to a gourd-like fruit. Shaibya likewise bore a son, a boy of godlike appearance. (03-104-18)
तदालाबुं समुत्स्रष्टुं मनश्चक्रे स पार्थिवः। अथान्तरिक्षाच्छुश्राव वाचं गम्भीरनिस्वनाम् ॥०३-१०४-१९॥
tadālābuṃ samutsraṣṭuṃ manaścakre sa pārthivaḥ। athāntarikṣācchuśrāva vācaṃ gambhīranisvanām ॥03-104-19॥
[तदा (tadā) - then; अलाबुं (ālābum) - gourd; समुत्स्रष्टुम् (samutsraṣṭum) - to throw away completely; मनः (manaḥ) - mind; चक्रे (cakre) - he made; सः (saḥ) - he; पार्थिवः (pārthivaḥ) - the king; अथ (atha) - then; अन्तरिक्षात् (antarikṣāt) - from the sky; शुश्राव (śuśrāva) - he heard; वाचम् (vācam) - voice; गम्भीरनिस्वनाम् (gambhīranisvanām) - having deep resonance;]
(Then, to throw away the gourd, the mind he made, he the king. Then from the sky he heard a voice with deep resonance.)
Then, the king made up his mind to throw away the gourd. At that moment, he heard a deeply resonant voice from the sky. (03-104-19)
राजन्मा साहसं कार्षीः पुत्रान्न त्यक्तुमर्हसि। अलाबुमध्यान्निष्कृष्य बीजं यत्नेन गोप्यताम् ॥०३-१०४-२०॥
rājan mā sāhasaṃ kārṣīḥ putrān na tyaktum arhasi। alābu-madhyāt niṣkṛṣya bījaṃ yatnena gopyatām॥03-104-20॥
[राजन् (rājan) - O king; मा (mā) - do not; साहसं (sāhasam) - rashness; कार्षीः (kārṣīḥ) - you should do; पुत्रान् (putrān) - sons; न (na) - not; त्यक्तुम् (tyaktum) - to abandon; अर्हसि (arhasi) - you ought; अलाबुमध्यात् (alābu-madhyāt) - from inside a gourd; निष्कृष्य (niṣkṛṣya) - having taken out; बीजं (bījam) - seed; यत्नेन (yatnena) - with effort; गोप्यताम् (gopyatām) - let it be preserved;]
(O king, do not do rashness; sons not to abandon you ought. Having taken out the seed from inside a gourd, with effort let it be preserved.)
O king, do not act rashly; you ought not abandon your sons. Just as, having taken out the seed from inside a gourd, it should be preserved with effort. (03-104-20)
सोपस्वेदेषु पात्रेषु घृतपूर्णेषु भागशः। ततः पुत्रसहस्राणि षष्टिं प्राप्स्यसि पार्थिव ॥०३-१०४-२१॥
sopasvedeṣu pātreṣu ghṛtapūrṇeṣu bhāgaśaḥ. tataḥ putrasahasrāṇi ṣaṣṭiṃ prāpsyasi pārthiva ॥03-104-21॥
[सोपस्वेदेषु (sopasvedeṣu) - in those mixed with sweat; (sa-upasveda-iṣu: with-exudation-in;) पात्रेषु (pātreṣu) - in vessels; (pātra-iṣu: vessels-in;) घृतपूर्णेषु (ghṛtapūrṇeṣu) - filled with ghee; (ghṛta-pūrṇa-iṣu: ghee-filled-in;) भागशः (bhāgaśaḥ) - by portions; (bhāgaśas: in shares;) ततः (tataḥ) - then; (from that;) पुत्रसहस्राणि (putrasahasrāṇi) - thousand sons; (putra-sahasra-āṇi: son-thousand-plural;) षष्टिं (ṣaṣṭim) - sixty; (ṣaṣṭiṃ: sixty;) प्राप्स्यसि (prāpsyasi) - you will obtain; (future, 2nd person singular of √āp, to obtain;) पार्थिव (pārthiva) - O king; (pārthiva: ruler;);]
(In those mixed-with-sweat vessels filled with ghee, in portions, then, sixty thousand sons you will obtain, O king.)
O king, then, by means of those vessels filled with ghee mixed with sweat, in portions, you will obtain sixty thousand sons. (03-104-21)
महादेवेन दिष्टं ते पुत्रजन्म नराधिप। अनेन क्रमयोगेन मा ते बुद्धिरतोऽन्यथा ॥०३-१०४-२२॥
mahādevena diṣṭaṃ te putrajanma narādhipa। anena kramayogena mā te buddhir ato'nyathā ॥03-104-22॥

(By Mahadeva ordained for you, the son's birth, O lord of men. By this method of sequence, do not let your mind go otherwise from this.)
O lord of men, the birth of your son has been ordained by Mahadeva. By following this method in order, do not let your mind turn elsewhere from this. (03-104-22)
