एतच्छ्रुत्वान्तरिक्षाच्च स राजा राजसत्तम। यथोक्तं तच्चकाराथ श्रद्दधद्भरतर्षभ ॥०३-१०५-१॥
etat śrutvā antarikṣāt ca saḥ rājā rāja-sattama। yathā-uktam tat ca cakāra atha śraddadhat bharata-ṛṣabha ॥03-105-1॥
[एतत् (etat) - this; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; अन्तरिक्षात् (antarikṣāt) - from the sky; च (ca) - and; स (saḥ) - he; राजा (rājā) - king; राजसत्तम (rāja-sattama) - the best among kings; यथा (yathā) - as; उक्तम् (uktam) - said; तत् (tat) - that; चकार (cakāra) - did; अथ (atha) - then; श्रद्दधत् (śraddadhat) - believing; भरतर्षभ (bharata-ṛṣabha) - bull among the Bharatas;]
(This having heard from the sky and he king best among kings as said that did then believing bull among the Bharatas.)
O bull among the Bharatas, having heard this from the sky, that king, the best among kings, then did as was said, believing it. (03-105-1)
षष्टिः पुत्रसहस्राणि तस्याप्रतिमतेजसः। रुद्रप्रसादाद्राजर्षेः समजायन्त पार्थिव ॥०३-१०५-२॥
ṣaṣṭiḥ putrasahasrāṇi tasyāpratimatejasaḥ। rudraprasādādrājarṣeḥ samajāyanta pārthiva ॥03-105-2॥
[षष्टिः (ṣaṣṭiḥ) - sixty; पुत्रसहस्राणि (putrasahasrāṇi) - thousands of sons; तस्य (tasya) - of him; अप्रतिमतेजसः (apratimatejasaḥ) - of incomparable energy; रुद्रप्रसादात् (rudraprasādāt) - from Rudra's grace; राजर्षेः (rājarṣeḥ) - of the royal sage; समजायन्त (samajāyanta) - were born; पार्थिव (pārthiva) - O king;]
(Sixty thousands of sons of him of incomparable energy from Rudra's grace of the royal sage were born, O king.)
O king, by Rudra's grace, sixty thousand sons, of incomparable energy, were born to that royal sage. (03-105-2)
ते घोराः क्रूरकर्माण आकाशपरिसर्पिणः। बहुत्वाच्चावजानन्तः सर्वाँल्लोकान्सहामरान् ॥०३-१०५-३॥
te ghorāḥ krūrakarmāṇa ākāśa-parisarpiṇaḥ। bahutvāccāvajānantaḥ sarvā̃llokānsahāmarān ॥03-105-3॥
[ते (te) - they; घोराः (ghorāḥ) - terrible; क्रूरकर्माण (krūrakarmāṇa) - with cruel deeds; आकाशपरिसर्पिणः (ākāśa-parisarpinaḥ) - moving about the sky; बहुत्वात् (bahutvāt) - due to abundance; due to being many; च (ca) - and; अवजानन्तः (avajānantaḥ) - despising; disregarding; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; लोकान् (lokān) - the worlds; सह (saha) - along with; together with; अमरान् (amarān) - the immortals; the gods;]
(They, terrible, with cruel deeds, moving about the sky, due to abundance and despising all the worlds together with the gods.)
They, being terrible and performing cruel deeds, move about the sky; being many, they despise all the worlds together with the gods. (03-105-3)
त्रिदशांश्चाप्यबाधन्त तथा गन्धर्वराक्षसान्। सर्वाणि चैव भूतानि शूराः समरशालिनः ॥०३-१०५-४॥
tridaśāṁś cāpy abādhanta tathā gandharvarākṣasān। sarvāṇi caiva bhūtāni śūrāḥ samarashālinaḥ ॥03-105-4॥
[त्रिदशान् (tridaśān) - the thirty gods; (i.e., the devas); च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; अबाधन्त (abādhanta) - they afflicted; तथा (tathā) - likewise; गन्धर्वराक्षसान् (gandharva-rākṣasān) - the gandharvas and rākṣasas; सर्वाणि (sarvāṇi) - all; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; भूतानि (bhūtāni) - beings; शूराः (śūrāḥ) - heroes; समरशालिनः (samara-śālinaḥ) - skilled in battle;]
(The heroes skilled in battle also afflicted the thirty gods; likewise the gandharvas and rākṣasas; and indeed all beings.)
The heroes skilled in battle attacked not only the thirty gods, but also the gandharvas, rākṣasas, and in fact all beings. (03-105-4)
वध्यमानास्ततो लोकाः सागरैर्मन्दबुद्धिभिः। ब्रह्माणं शरणं जग्मुः सहिताः सर्वदैवतैः ॥०३-१०५-५॥
vadhyamānās tato lokāḥ sāgarair mandabuddhibhiḥ। brahmāṇaṃ śaraṇaṃ jagmuḥ sahitāḥ sarvadaivataiḥ॥03-105-5॥
[वध्यमानाः (vadhyamānāḥ) - being killed; ततः (tataḥ) - then; लोकाः (lokāḥ) - the beings; सागरैः (sāgaraiḥ) - by the Sāgaras; मन्दबुद्धिभिः (mandabuddhibhiḥ) - with dull intellects; ब्रह्माणम् (brahmāṇam) - to Brahmā; शरणम् (śaraṇam) - refuge; जग्मुः (jagmuḥ) - they went; सहिताः (sahitāḥ) - together; सर्वदैवतैः (sarvadaivataiḥ) - with all the deities;]
(Being killed then the beings by the Sāgaras with dull intellects, to Brahmā refuge they went, together with all the deities.)
Then, as they were being killed by the Sāgaras of dull intellect, the beings together with all the deities went to take refuge in Brahmā. (03-105-5)
तानुवाच महाभागः सर्वलोकपितामहः। गच्छध्वं त्रिदशाः सर्वे लोकैः सार्धं यथागतम् ॥०३-१०५-६॥
tān uvāca mahābhāgaḥ sarvalokapitāmahaḥ। gacchadhvaṃ tridaśāḥ sarve lokaiḥ sārdhaṃ yathāgatam ॥03-105-6॥
[तान् (tān) - to them; उवाच (uvāca) - said; महाभागः (mahābhāgaḥ) - the highly fortunate one; सर्वलोकपितामहः (sarvalokapitāmahaḥ) - the grandsire of all worlds; गच्छध्वं (gacchadhvaṃ) - go; त्रिदशाः (tridaśāḥ) - the thirty-three gods; सर्वे (sarve) - all; लोकैः (lokaiḥ) - with (your) worlds; सार्धं (sārdhaṃ) - together; यथा (yathā) - as; आगतम् (āgatam) - you have come;]
(To them, said, the highly fortunate one, the grandsire of all worlds: Go, gods, all, with (your) worlds, together as (you) have come.)
The highly fortunate grandsire of all the worlds said to them: "All you gods, return with your worlds as you have come." (03-105-6)
नातिदीर्घेण कालेन सागराणां क्षयो महान्। भविष्यति महाघोरः स्वकृतैः कर्मभिः सुराः ॥०३-१०५-७॥
nātidirgheṇa kālena sāgarāṇāṃ kṣayo mahān। bhaviṣyati mahāghoraḥ svakṛtaiḥ karmabhiḥ surāḥ॥03-105-7॥
[नातिदीर्घेण (nātidirgheṇa) - not with very long; कालेन (kālena) - by time; सागराणां (sāgarāṇām) - of oceans; क्षयः (kṣayaḥ) - destruction; महान् (mahān) - great; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be; महाघोरः (mahāghoraḥ) - very terrible; स्वकृतैः (svakṛtaiḥ) - by own actions; कर्मभिः (karmabhiḥ) - by deeds; सुराः (surāḥ) - gods;]
(Not with very long time, of oceans destruction great will be; very terrible, by their own actions, by deeds, gods.)
In not too long a time, there will be great destruction of the oceans; a very terrible event will happen to the gods because of their own actions and deeds. (03-105-7)
एवमुक्तास्ततो देवा लोकाश्च मनुजेश्वर। पितामहमनुज्ञाप्य विप्रजग्मुर्यथागतम् ॥०३-१०५-८॥
evam-uktās tato devā lokāś ca manujeśvara. pitāmaham anujñāpyā vipra jagmur yathāgatam ॥03-105-8॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्ताः (uktāḥ) - having been addressed; ततः (tataḥ) - then; देवाः (devāḥ) - the gods; लोकाः (lokāḥ) - the worlds; च (ca) - and; मनुजेश्वर (manujeśvara) - O lord of men; पितामहम् (pitāmaham) - the grandsire; अनुज्ञाप्य (anujñāpya) - having obtained permission from; विप्र (vipra) - O wise one; जग्मुः (jagmuḥ) - they went; यथा (yathā) - as; आगतम् (āgatam) - they had come;]
(Thus having been addressed, then the gods and the worlds, O lord of men, having obtained permission from the grandsire, O wise one, went as they had come.)
Thus addressed, the gods and the worlds, O lord of men, after obtaining permission from the grandsire, O wise one, departed as they had come. (03-105-8)
ततः काले बहुतिथे व्यतीते भरतर्षभ। दीक्षितः सगरो राजा हयमेधेन वीर्यवान् ॥ तस्याश्वो व्यचरद्भूमिं पुत्रैः सुपरिरक्षितः ॥०३-१०५-९॥
tataḥ kāle bahutithe vyatīte bharatarṣabha। dīkṣitaḥ sagaro rājā hayamedhena vīryavān॥ tasyāśvo vyacarad bhūmiṃ putraiḥ suparirakṣitaḥ॥03-105-9॥

(Then, at a time when many lunar days had passed, O bull among the Bharatas, King Sagara, full of vigor, having been consecrated for the horse-sacrifice—his horse wandered the earth, well protected by his sons.)
After a long time had passed, O foremost of the Bharatas, the powerful King Sagara, having been consecrated for the horse sacrifice, let his horse wander across the earth under the careful protection of his sons. (03-105-9)
समुद्रं स समासाद्य निस्तोयं भीमदर्शनम्। रक्ष्यमाणः प्रयत्नेन तत्रैवान्तरधीयत ॥०३-१०५-१०॥
samudraṃ sa samāsādya nistoyaṃ bhīmadarśanam। rakṣyamāṇaḥ prayatnena tatraivāntaradhīyata ॥03-105-10॥
[समुद्रं (samudraṃ) - ocean; स (sa) - he; समासाद्य (samāsādya) - having approached; निस्तोयम् (nistoyam) - waterless; भीमदर्शनम् (bhīmadarśanam) - terrible in appearance; रक्ष्यमाणः (rakṣyamāṇaḥ) - being protected; प्रयत्नेन (prayatnena) - with effort; तत्र (tatra) - there; एव (eva) - indeed; अन्तरधीयत (antaradhīyata) - disappeared;]
(He, having approached the ocean, waterless, terrible in appearance, being protected with effort, indeed there disappeared.)
He reached the ocean, which was waterless and terrifying in appearance, and though protected with effort, disappeared right there. (03-105-10)
ततस्ते सागरास्तात हृतं मत्वा हयोत्तमम्। आगम्य पितुराचख्युरदृश्यं तुरगं हृतम् ॥ तेनोक्ता दिक्षु सर्वासु सर्वे मार्गत वाजिनम् ॥०३-१०५-११॥
tatas te sāgarās tāt hṛtaṃ matvā hayottamam। āgamya pitur ācakhyur adṛśyaṃ turagaṃ hṛtam॥ tenoktā dikṣu sarvāsu sarve mārga ta vājinam॥03-105-11॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; ते (te) - they; सागरात् (sāgarāt) - from the ocean; तात (tāt) - O father; हृतम् (hṛtam) - stolen; मत्वा (matvā) - having thought; हय-उत्तमम् (haya-uttamam) - the best horse; आगम्य (āgamya) - having come; पितुः (pituḥ) - to father; आचख्यु: (ācakhyuḥ) - they reported; अदृश्यम् (adṛśyam) - unseen; तुरगम् (turagam) - horse; हृतम् (hṛtam) - stolen; तेन (tena) - by him; उक्ता: (uktāḥ) - were told; दिक्षु (dikṣu) - in the directions; सर्वासु (sarvāsu) - in all; सर्वे (sarve) - all; मार्गत (mārgata) - search; वाजिनम् (vājinam) - the steed;]
(Then they, having thought (that) the best horse was stolen from the ocean, having come to (their) father, reported (that) the unseen horse was stolen. By him, (they) were told: 'In all directions, all (of you) search for the steed.' (03-105-11))
Then they, thinking that the best horse was stolen from the ocean, went to their father and reported that the unseen horse was stolen. He told them, 'All of you search for the steed in every direction.' (03-105-11)
ततस्ते पितुराज्ञाय दिक्षु सर्वासु तं हयम्। अमार्गन्त महाराज सर्वं च पृथिवीतलम् ॥०३-१०५-१२॥
tatas te pitur ājñāya dikṣu sarvāsu taṃ hayam। amārganta mahārāja sarvaṃ ca pṛthivī-talam ॥03-105-12॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; ते (te) - they; पितुः (pituḥ) - of the father; आज्ञाय (ājñāya) - having understood; दिक्षु (dikṣu) - in the directions; सर्वासु (sarvāsu) - in all; तम् (tam) - that; हयम् (hayam) - horse; अमार्गन्त (amārganta) - searched for; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; च (ca) - and; पृथिवीतलम् (pṛthivī-talam) - earth's surface;]
(Then they, having understood the command of the father, in all directions that horse searched for, O great king, all and the earth's surface.)
Then, O great king, they, having understood their father's command, searched for that horse in all directions and over the entire surface of the earth. (03-105-12)
ततस्ते सागराः सर्वे समुपेत्य परस्परम्। नाध्यगच्छन्त तुरगमश्वहर्तारमेव च ॥०३-१०५-१३॥
tatas te sāgarāḥ sarve samupetya parasparam। nādhyagacchanta turagamaśvahartāram eva ca॥03-105-13॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; ते (te) - they; सागराः (sāgarāḥ) - oceans; सर्वे (sarve) - all; समुपेत्य (samupetya) - having approached together; परस्परम् (parasparam) - each other; न (na) - not; अध्यगच्छन् (adhyagacchan) - found; तुरगम् (turagam) - horse; अश्वहर्तारम् (aśvahartāram) - horse-thief; एव (eva) - indeed; च (ca) - and;]
(Then they, all the oceans, having come together to each other, did not find the horse or the horse-thief indeed and also.)
Then all the oceans, having come together, did not find either the horse or the horse-thief. (03-105-13)
आगम्य पितरं चोचुस्ततः प्राञ्जलयोऽग्रतः। ससमुद्रवनद्वीपा सनदीनदकन्दरा ॥ सपर्वतवनोद्देशा निखिलेन मही नृप ॥०३-१०५-१४॥
āgamya pitaraṃ cocus tataḥ prāñjalayo'grataḥ. sasamudravanadvīpā sanadīnadakandarā ॥ saparvatavanoddeśā nikhilena mahī nṛpa ॥03-105-14॥
[आगम्य (āgamya) - having approached; पितरम् (pitaraṃ) - father; च (ca) - and; उचुः (ūcuḥ) - said; ततः (tataḥ) - then; प्राञ्जलयः (prāñjalayaḥ) - with joined palms; अग्रतः (agrataḥ) - in front; ससमुद्रवनद्वीपा (sasamudravanadvīpā) - together with oceans, forests, and islands; सनदीनदकन्दरा (sanadīnadakandarā) - together with rivers, streams, and caves; सपर्वतवनोद्देशा (saparvatavanoddeśā) - together with mountain and forest tracts; निखिलेन (nikhilena) - completely; मही (mahī) - the earth; नृप (nṛpa) - O king;]
(Having approached the father, and said then with joined palms in front. Together with oceans, forests, islands, with rivers, streams, caves, with mountain and forest tracts, completely, the earth, O king.)
O king, having approached their father and, standing in front with joined palms, they spoke: the entire earth—together with its oceans, forests, islands, rivers, streams, caves, and all its mountains and forest regions. (03-105-14)
अस्माभिर्विचिता राजञ्शासनात्तव पार्थिव। न चाश्वमधिगच्छामो नाश्वहर्तारमेव च ॥०३-१०५-१५॥
asmābhir vicitā rājan śāsanāt tava pārthiva। na ca aśvam adhigacchāmaḥ na aśva-hartāram eva ca ॥03-105-15॥
[अस्माभिः (asmābhiḥ) - by us; विचिता (vicitā) - sought out; राजन् (rājan) - O king; शासनात् (śāsanāt) - by the command; तव (tava) - of you; पार्थिव (pārthiva) - O ruler; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; अश्वम् (aśvam) - the horse; अधिगच्छामः (adhigacchāmaḥ) - do we obtain; न (na) - not; अश्वहर्तारम् (aśva-hartāram) - the horse-stealer; एव (eva) - indeed; च (ca) - and;]
(By us, sought out, O king, by the command of you, O ruler; not and the horse do we obtain, nor the horse-stealer indeed and.)
O king, we have searched (as commanded by you), O ruler, but we have not found either the horse or the horse-stealer. (03-105-15)
श्रुत्वा तु वचनं तेषां स राजा क्रोधमूर्छितः। उवाच वचनं सर्वांस्तदा दैववशान्नृप ॥०३-१०५-१६॥
śrutvā tu vacanaṃ teṣāṃ sa rājā krodhamūrcchitaḥ। uvāca vacanaṃ sarvāṃs tadā daivavaśān nṛpa ॥03-105-16॥
[श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) (śrutvā) - having heard; तु (tu) (tu) - but; वचनं (vacanam) (vacanaṃ) - words; तेषां (teṣām) (teṣām) - of them; स (sa) (sa) - he; राजा (rājā) (rājā) - king; क्रोधमूर्छितः (krodhamūrcchitaḥ) (krodhamūrcchitaḥ) - overcome with anger; उवाच (uvāca) (uvāca) - said; वचनं (vacanam) (vacanam) - words; सर्वान् (sarvān) (sarvān) - to all; तदा (tadā) (tadā) - then; दैववशात् (daivavaśāt) (daivavaśāt) - by force of fate; नृप (nṛpa) (nṛpa) - king;]
(Having heard words but of them, he king overcome with anger said words to all then by force of fate king.)

अनागमाय गच्छध्वं भूयो मार्गत वाजिनम्। यज्ञियं तं विना ह्यश्वं नागन्तव्यं हि पुत्रकाः ॥०३-१०५-१७॥
anāgamāya gacchadhvaṃ bhūyo mārgata vājinam। yajñiyaṃ taṃ vinā hyaśvaṃ nāgantavyaṃ hi putrakāḥ॥03-105-17॥
[अनागमाय (anāgamāya) - for not returning;, गच्छध्वं (gacchadhvam) - go (you all);, भूयः (bhūyaḥ) - again;, मार्गत (mārgata) - seek;, वाजिनम् (vājinam) - the steed;, यज्ञियम् (yajñiyam) - suitable for sacrifice;, तं (taṃ) - him;, विना (vinā) - without;, हि (hi) - for;, अश्वम् (aśvam) - the horse;, न (na) - not;, आगन्तव्यम् (āgantavyam) - (you all) should return;, हि (hi) - indeed;, पुत्रकाः (putrakāḥ) - O sons;]
(For not returning, go you all again, seek the steed. Without him, for the sacrificial horse indeed, not should (you all) return, O sons.)
Go forth again so as not to return, and seek the steed. Without obtaining that sacrificial horse, you must not come back, my sons. (03-105-17)
प्रतिगृह्य तु संदेशं ततस्ते सगरात्मजाः। भूय एव महीं कृत्स्नां विचेतुमुपचक्रमुः ॥०३-१०५-१८॥
pratigṛhya tu saṃdeśaṃ tataste sagarātmajāḥ। bhūya eva mahīṃ kṛtsnāṃ vicetumupacakramuḥ॥03-105-18॥
[प्रतिगृह्य (pratigṛhya) - having received; तु (tu) - but; संदेशं (saṃdeśam) - message; ततः (tataḥ) - then; ते (te) - they; सगरात्मजाः (sagarātmajāḥ) - sons of Sagara; भूय (bhūya) - again; एव (eva) - indeed; महीं (mahīm) - the earth; कृत्स्नां (kṛtsnām) - entire; विचेतुम् (vicetum) - to search; उपचक्रमुः (upacakramuḥ) - they began;]
(Having received the message, but then they, the sons of Sagara, again indeed the entire earth to search they began.)
But having received the message, then the sons of Sagara again began to search the entire earth. (03-105-18)
अथापश्यन्त ते वीराः पृथिवीमवदारिताम्। समासाद्य बिलं तच्च खनन्तः सगरात्मजाः ॥ कुद्दालैर्ह्रेषुकैश्चैव समुद्रमखनंस्तदा ॥०३-१०५-१९॥
athāpaśyanta te vīrāḥ pṛthivīm avadāritām। samāsādya bilaṃ tac ca khanantaḥ sagarātmajāḥ ॥ kuddālair hreṣukaiś caiva samudram akhanan tadā ॥03-105-19॥
[अथ (atha) - then; अपश्यन्त (apaśyanta) - saw; ते (te) - they; वीराः (vīrāḥ) - heroes; पृथिवीम् (pṛthivīm) - earth; अवदारिताम् (avadāritām) - split; torn; समासाद्य (samāsādya) - having reached; बिलम् (bilam) - hole; cavity; तत् (tat) - that; च (ca) - and; खनन्तः (khanantaḥ) - digging; सगरात्मजाः (sagarātmajāḥ) - Sagara's sons; कुद्दालैः (kuddālaiḥ) - with spades; ह्रेषुकैः (hreṣukaiḥ) - with hoes; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; समुद्रम् (samudram) - ocean; अखनन् (akhanan) - they dug; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(Then saw they, the heroes, the earth split. Having reached the hole, that and digging, Sagara's sons with spades and hoes indeed the ocean they dug then.)
Then those heroes saw the earth split open. Upon reaching that hole, Sagara's sons dug out the ocean with spades and hoes at that time. (03-105-19)
स खन्यमानः सहितैः सागरैर्वरुणालयः। अगच्छत्परमामार्तिं दार्यमाणः समन्ततः ॥०३-१०५-२०॥
sa khanyamānaḥ sahitaiḥ sāgaraiḥ varuṇālayaḥ। agacchat paramām ārtiṃ dāryamāṇaḥ samantataḥ ॥03-105-20॥
[स (sa) - he; खन्यमानः (khanyamānaḥ) - being excavated; सहितैः (sahitaiḥ) - together with; सागरैः (sāgaraiḥ) - oceans; वरुणालयः (varuṇālayaḥ) - abode of Varuṇa (ocean); अगच्छत् (agacchat) - went to; परमाम् (paramām) - supreme; आर्तिम् (ārtiṃ) - distress; दार्यमाणः (dāryamāṇaḥ) - being torn apart; समन्ततः (samantataḥ) - on all sides;]
(He, being excavated together with the oceans, the abode of Varuṇa, went to supreme distress, being torn apart on all sides.)
The ocean, abode of Varuṇa, as it was being excavated together with the other seas, was torn apart on all sides and plunged into extreme distress. (03-105-20)
