ते तं दृष्ट्वा हयं राजन्सम्प्रहृष्टतनूरुहाः। अनादृत्य महात्मानं कपिलं कालचोदिताः ॥ सङ्क्रुद्धाः समधावन्त अश्वग्रहणकाङ्क्षिणः ॥०३-१०६-१॥
te taṁ dṛṣṭvā hayaṁ rājansamprahṛṣṭatanūruhāḥ। anādṛtya mahātmānaṁ kapilaṁ kālacoditāḥ॥ saṅkruddhāḥ samadhāvanta aśvagrahaṇakāṅkṣiṇaḥ॥03-106-1॥
[ते (te) - they; तं (taṁ) - him; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; हयम् (hayam) - the horse; राजन् (rājan) - O king; सम्प्रहृष्ट (samprahṛṣṭa) - very delighted; तनूरुहाः (tanūruhāḥ) - hair-standing (on end); अनादृत्य (anādṛtya) - disregarding; महात्मानम् (mahātmānam) - the great-souled; कपिलम् (kapilam) - Kapila; कालचोदिताः (kālacoditāḥ) - impelled by time; सङ्क्रुद्धाः (saṅkruddhāḥ) - very enraged; समधावन्त (samadhāvanta) - they rushed; अश्वग्रहणकाङ्क्षिणः (aśvagrahaṇakāṅkṣiṇaḥ) - desiring to seize the horse;]
(They him having seen the horse, O king, very delighted, hair-standing (on end); disregarding the great-souled Kapila, impelled by time, very enraged, they rushed, desiring to seize the horse.)
O king, seeing the horse, they became very delighted, their hair standing on end; disregarding the great-souled Kapila and impelled by time, they, being very enraged and desiring to seize the horse, rushed forward. (03-106-1)
ततः क्रुद्धो महाराज कपिलो मुनिसत्तमः। वासुदेवेति यं प्राहुः कपिलं मुनिसत्तमम् ॥०३-१०६-२॥
tataḥ kruddho mahārāja kapilo munisattamaḥ। vāsudeveti yaṃ prāhuḥ kapilaṃ munisattamam ॥03-106-2॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; क्रुद्धः (kruddhaḥ) - angry; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; कपिलः (kapilaḥ) - Kapila; मुनिसत्तमः (munisattamaḥ) - the best among sages; वासुदेव (vāsudeva) - Vāsudeva; इति (iti) - thus; यं (yaṃ) - whom; प्राहुः (prāhuḥ) - they call; कपिलं (kapilaṃ) - Kapila; मुनिसत्तमम् (munisattamam) - the best among sages;]
(Then, angry, O great king, Kapila, the best among sages—Vāsudeva, thus, whom they call Kapila, the best among sages.)
Then, O great king, Kapila, the best among sages, who is also called Vāsudeva, became angry. (03-106-2)
स चक्षुर्विवृतं कृत्वा तेजस्तेषु समुत्सृजन्। ददाह सुमहातेजा मन्दबुद्धीन्स सागरान् ॥०३-१०६-३॥
sa cakṣur-vivṛtaṃ kṛtvā tejas-teṣu samutsṛjan। dadāha sumahātejā manda-buddhīn sa sāgarān ॥03-106-3॥
[स (sa) - he; चक्षुः (cakṣuḥ) - eye; विवृतं (vivṛtam) - opened; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having made; तेजस् (tejas) - brilliance; तेषु (teṣu) - among them; समुत्सृजन् (samutsṛjan) - completely emitting; ददाह (dadāha) - burned; सुमहातेजा (sumahātejā) - having great brilliance; मन्दबुद्धीन् (manda-buddhīn) - those of slow intellect; स (sa) - he; सागरान् (sāgarān) - Sāgaras;]
(He, having made his eye open, among them completely emitting brilliance, burned (those) Sāgaras of slow intellect, he (who was) of great brilliance.)
He, opening his eye wide and emitting his brilliance among them, the one of great brilliance burned the Sāgaras who were slow of intellect. (03-106-3)
तान्दृष्ट्वा भस्मसाद्भूतान्नारदः सुमहातपाः। सगरान्तिकमागच्छत्तच्च तस्मै न्यवेदयत् ॥०३-१०६-४॥
tān dṛṣṭvā bhasmasādbhūtān nāradaḥ sumahātapāḥ। sagarāntikam āgacchat tac ca tasmai nyavedayat ॥03-106-4॥

(Having seen them become ashes, Nārada, of great austerity, came to the presence of Sagara, and that he reported to him.)
After seeing them turned to ashes, the greatly austere Nārada came to Sagara and reported it to him. (03-106-4)
स तच्छ्रुत्वा वचो घोरं राजा मुनिमुखोद्गतम्। मुहूर्तं विमना भूत्वा स्थाणोर्वाक्यमचिन्तयत् ॥ आत्मानमात्मनाश्वास्य हयमेवान्वचिन्तयत् ॥०३-१०६-५॥
sa tacchrutvā vaco ghoraṃ rājā munimukhodgatam। muhūrtaṃ vimanā bhūtvā sthāṇorvākyamacintayat॥ ātmānamātmanaśvāśya hayamevānvacintayat॥03-106-5॥
[स (sa) - he; तत् श्रुत्वा (tat śrutvā) - that having heard; वचः (vacaḥ) - speech; घोरं (ghoraṃ) - terrible; राजा (rājā) - the king; मुनि-मुख-उद्गतम् (muni-mukha-udgatam) - issued from the mouth of the sage; मुहूर्तं (muhūrtaṃ) - for a moment; विमनाः (vimanāḥ) - distressed in mind; भूत्वा (bhūtvā) - having become; स्थाणोः (sthāṇoḥ) - of Sthāṇu (another name for Śiva); वाक्यम् (vākyam) - word; अचिन्तयत् (acintayat) - he considered; आत्मानम् (ātmānam) - himself; आत्मना (ātmanā) - by himself; अश्वास्य (aśvāśya) - having comforted; हयमेव (hayam eva) - horse only; अन्वचिन्तयत् (anvacintayat) - he further considered;]
(He, having heard that terrible speech issued from the mouth of the sage, for a moment, having become distressed in mind, considered the word of Sthāṇu. Comforting himself by himself, he further considered only the horse. (03-106-5))
Having heard that dreadful speech from the mouth of the sage, the king became disheartened for a moment and reflected on the words of Sthāṇu (Śiva). Then, regaining his composure, he thought again only about the horse. (03-106-5)
अंशुमन्तं समाहूय असमज्ञःसुतं तदा। पौत्रं भरतशार्दूल इदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥०३-१०६-६॥
aṃśumantaṃ samāhūya asamajñaḥ-sutaṃ tadā। pautraṃ bharataśārdūla idaṃ vacanam abravīt ॥03-106-6॥
[अंशुमन्तं (aṃśumantam) - Aṃśumant; (proper noun); समाहूय (samāhūya) - having called; having summoned; असमज्ञःसुतं (asamajñaḥ-sutam) - Asamajña's son; (proper noun compound: the son of Asamajña); तदा (tadā) - then; at that time; पौत्रं (pautram) - grandson; भरतशार्दूल (bharataśārdūla) - tiger among the Bharatas; O best of the Bharatas; इदं (idaṃ) - this; वचनम् (vacanam) - speech; words; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - he spoke; he said;]
(Aṃśumant, having called Asamajña's son then, his grandson, O tiger among the Bharatas, this speech he spoke.)
O tiger among the Bharatas, having then called Aṃśumant, the son of Asamajña, his grandson, he addressed these words. (03-106-6)
षष्टिस्तानि सहस्राणि पुत्राणाममितौजसाम्। कापिलं तेज आसाद्य मत्कृते निधनं गताः ॥०३-१०६-७॥
ṣaṣṭi-stāni sahasrāṇi putrāṇām amita-ojasām। kāpilaṃ teja āsādya mat-kṛte nidhanaṃ gatāḥ ॥03-106-7॥
[षष्टि (ṣaṣṭi) - sixty; स्थानि (sthāni) - times; सहस्राणि (sahasrāṇi) - thousand; पुत्राणाम् (putrāṇām) - of sons; अमितौजसाम् (amita-ojasām) - of immeasurable power; कापिलं (kāpilaṃ) - of Kapila; तेजः (tejaḥ) - splendor; आसाद्य (āsādya) - after approaching; मत्कृते (mat-kṛte) - for my sake; निधनम् (nidhanaṃ) - death; गताः (gatāḥ) - went;]
(Sixty times a thousand sons of immeasurable power, approaching the splendor of Kapila, for my sake went to their death.)
Sixty thousand sons of immeasurable power, having encountered the fiery energy of Kapila, were destroyed for my sake. (03-106-7)
तव चापि पिता तात परित्यक्तो मयानघ। धर्मं संरक्षमाणेन पौराणां हितमिच्छता ॥०३-१०६-८॥
tava cāpi pitā tāta parityakto mayānagha। dharmaṃ saṃrakṣamāṇena paurāṇāṃ hitamicchatā ॥03-106-8॥
[तव (tava) - your; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; पिता (pitā) - father; तात (tāta) - dear one; परित्यक्तः (parityaktaḥ) - abandoned; मया (mayā) - by me; अनघ (anagha) - O sinless one; धर्मं (dharmaṃ) - righteousness; संरक्षमाणेन (saṃrakṣamāṇena) - protecting; पौराणां (paurāṇāṃ) - of the citizens; हितम् (hitam) - welfare; इच्छता (icchatā) - desiring;]
(Your and also father, dear one, was abandoned by me, O sinless one; righteousness protecting, of the citizens welfare desiring.)
O sinless one, your father too, dear one, was abandoned by me as I was protecting righteousness and desiring the welfare of the citizens. (03-106-8)

किमर्थं राजशार्दूलः सगरः पुत्रमात्मजम्। त्यक्तवान्दुस्त्यजं वीरं तन्मे ब्रूहि तपोधन ॥०३-१०६-९॥
kimarthaṃ rājaśārdūlaḥ sagaraḥ putram ātmajam। tyaktavān dustyajaṃ vīraṃ tan me brūhi tapodhana ॥03-106-9॥
[किमर्थम् (kimartham) - for what reason; राजशार्दूलः (rājaśārdūlaḥ) - O tiger among kings; सगरः (sagaraḥ) - Sagara; पुत्रम् (putram) - son; आत्मजम् (ātmajam) - own offspring; त्यक्तवान् (tyaktavān) - abandoned; दुस्त्यजम् (dustyajam) - difficult to abandon; वीरम् (vīram) - hero; तत् (tat) - that; मे (me) - to me; ब्रूहि (brūhi) - tell; तपोधन (tapodhana) - O possessor of austerity;]
(For what reason did Sagara, O tiger among kings, abandon his own son, the hero, difficult to abandon? That tell me, O possessor of austerity.)
O possessor of austerity, tell me for what reason Sagara, the tiger among kings, abandoned his own heroic son, who was so difficult to abandon. (03-106-9)

असमञ्जा इति ख्यातः सगरस्य सुतो ह्यभूत्। यं शैब्या जनयामास पौराणां स हि दारकान् ॥०३-१०६-१०॥
asamañjā iti khyātaḥ sagarasya suto hy abhūt। yaṃ śaibyā janayāmāsa paurāṇāṃ sa hi dārakān॥03-106-10॥
[असमञ्जा (asamañjā) - Asamanja; इति (iti) - thus; so; by this name; ख्यातः (khyātaḥ) - famous; known; सगरस्य (sagarasya) - of Sagara; सुतः (sutaḥ) - son; हि (hi) - indeed; surely; अभूत् (abhūt) - was; became; यं (yaṃ) - whom; शैब्या (śaibyā) - Shaibya (proper noun, name of a queen); जनयामास (janayāmāsa) - gave birth; पौराणां (paurāṇām) - of the people; of the citizens; स (sa) - he; हि (hi) - indeed; दारकान् (dārakān) - children; boys;]
(Asamanja thus known, Sagara's son indeed was; whom Shaibya gave birth to, of the citizens, he indeed (had) children.)
Asamanja, thus known, was indeed the son of Sagara; Shaibya gave birth to him, and he was indeed among the children of the citizens. (03-106-10)
खुरेषु क्रोशतो गृह्य नद्यां चिक्षेप दुर्बलान् ॥०३-१०६-१०॥
khureṣu krośato gṛhya nadyāṃ cikṣepa durbalān ॥03-106-10॥
[खुरेषु (khureṣu) - among the hoofs; क्रोशतो (krośataḥ) - shouting; गृह्य (gṛhya) - having seized; नद्यां (nadyām) - into the river; चिक्षेप (cikṣepa) - he threw; दुर्बलान् (durbalān) - the weak ones;]
(Among the hoofs, shouting, having seized, into the river, he threw the weak ones.)
He seized the weak ones who were shouting among the hoofs and threw them into the river. (03-106-10)
ततः पौराः समाजग्मुर्भयशोकपरिप्लुताः। सगरं चाभ्ययाचन्त सर्वे प्राञ्जलयः स्थिताः ॥०३-१०६-११॥
tataḥ paurāḥ samājagmurbhayaśokapariplutāḥ। sagaraṃ cābhyayācanta sarve prāñjalayaḥ sthitāḥ॥03-106-11॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; पौराः (paurāḥ) - citizens; समाजग्मुः (samājagmuḥ) - they approached; भयशोकपरिप्लुताः (bhayaśokapariplutāḥ) - overwhelmed by fear and grief; सगरं (sagaraṃ) - Sagara (proper noun, name of the king); च (ca) - and; अभ्ययाचन्त (abhyayācanta) - they supplicated; सर्वे (sarve) - all; प्राञ्जलयः (prāñjalayaḥ) - with folded hands; स्थिताः (sthitāḥ) - standing;]
(Then the citizens, overwhelmed by fear and grief, approached; and they supplicated to Sagara, all (of them), with folded hands, standing.)
Then the citizens, overwhelmed by fear and grief, all approached King Sagara, stood with folded hands, and supplicated to him. (03-106-11)
त्वं नस्त्राता महाराज परचक्रादिभिर्भयैः। असमञ्जोभयाद्घोरात्ततो नस्त्रातुमर्हसि ॥०३-१०६-१२॥
tvaṃ nas trātā mahārāja paracakrādibhir bhayaiḥ। asamañjōbhayād ghorāt tato nas trātum arhasi॥03-106-12॥
[त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; नः (naḥ) - us; for us; त्राता (trātā) - protector; महाराज (mahārāja) - great king; परचक्रादिभिः (paracakrādibhiḥ) - by hostile armies and others; भयैः (bhayaiḥ) - by fears; असमञ्जोभयात् (asamañjōbhayāt) - from the terrible fear of Asamanja; घोरात् (ghorāt) - from the horrible; ततः (tataḥ) - therefore; नः (naḥ) - us; for us; त्रातुम् (trātum) - to protect; अर्हसि (arhasi) - you ought;]
(You us protector great king by hostile armies and others by fears from Asamanja fear, from the horrible; therefore us to protect you ought.)
You are our protector, O great king, from fears such as those caused by hostile armies and others. From the terrible fear of Asamanja, therefore, you ought to protect us. (03-106-12)
पौराणां वचनं श्रुत्वा घोरं नृपतिसत्तमः। मुहूर्तं विमना भूत्वा सचिवानिदमब्रवीत् ॥०३-१०६-१३॥
paurāṇāṃ vacanaṃ śrutvā ghoraṃ nṛpatisattamaḥ। muhūrtaṃ vimanā bhūtvā sacivān idam abravīt॥03-106-13॥
[पौराणां (paurāṇām) - of the townsmen; वचनं (vacanam) - speech; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; घोरं (ghoram) - terrible; नृपतिसत्तमः (nṛpatisattamaḥ) - the best among kings; मुहूर्तं (muhūrtam) - for a moment; विमना (vimanā) - distressed in mind; भूत्वा (bhūtvā) - having become; सचिवान् (sacivān) - to the ministers; इदम् (idam) - this; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said;]
(Having heard the terrible speech of the townsmen, the best among kings, having become distressed in mind for a moment, said this to the ministers.)
Hearing the terrible words of the townsmen, the best of kings became distressed for a moment and then said this to his ministers. (03-106-13)
असमञ्जाः पुरादद्य सुतो मे विप्रवास्यताम्। यदि वो मत्प्रियं कार्यमेतच्छीघ्रं विधीयताम् ॥०३-१०६-१४॥
asamañjāḥ purād adya suto me vipravāsyatām। yadi vo mat-priyaṃ kāryam etac chīghraṃ vidhīyatām॥03-106-14॥
[असमञ्जाः (asamañjāḥ) - Asamanjas; (proper noun / name); पुरा (purā) - before; formerly; अद्य (adya) - today; now; सुतः (sutaḥ) - son; मे (me) - my; विप्रवास्यताम् (vipravāsyatām) - let him be exiled; may he be sent away; यदि (yadi) - if; वः (vaḥ) - by you; for you (plural dative/genitive); मत्प्रियं (mat-priyaṃ) - what is dear to me; my wish; कार्यं (kāryam) - to be done; action; एतत् (etat) - this; शीघ्रं (śīghraṃ) - quickly; swiftly; विधीयताम् (vidhīyatām) - let it be done; may it be accomplished;]
(Asamanjas, formerly, today, my son, let him be exiled. If by you my dear (wish) action this quickly let it be done.)
Let Asamanjas, who was formerly (my son), today be exiled. If this action is dear to me for you, let it be quickly accomplished. (03-106-14)
एवमुक्ता नरेन्द्रेण सचिवास्ते नराधिप। यथोक्तं त्वरिताश्चक्रुर्यथाज्ञापितवान्नृपः ॥०३-१०६-१५॥
evamuktā narendreṇa sacivās te narādhipa. yathoktaṃ tvaritāś cakrur yathājñāpitavān nṛpaḥ ॥03-106-15॥
[एवम्-युक्ता (evam-uktā) - thus addressed; नरेन्द्रेण (narendreṇa) - by the king; सचिवाः (sacivāḥ) - ministers; ते (te) - they; नराधिप (narādhipa) - O lord of men; यथोक्तम् (yathoktam) - as told; त्वरिताः (tvaritāḥ) - swiftly; चक्रुः (cakruḥ) - they did; यथा-आज्ञापितवान् (yathā-ājñāpitavān) - as instructed; नृपः (nṛpaḥ) - the king;]
(Thus addressed by the king, the ministers, O lord of men, as told, swiftly did as the king instructed.)
Thus addressed by the king, the ministers, O lord of men, promptly did as the king had instructed. (03-106-15)
एतत्ते सर्वमाख्यातं यथा पुत्रो महात्मना। पौराणां हितकामेन सगरेण विवासितः ॥०३-१०६-१६॥
etat te sarvam ākhyātaṁ yathā putro mahātmanā। paurāṇāṁ hitakāmena sagareṇa vivāsitaḥ ॥03-106-16॥
[एतत् (etat) - this; ते (te) - to you; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; आख्यातम् (ākhyātam) - has been told; यथा (yathā) - as; in the manner; पुत्रः (putraḥ) - son; महात्मना (mahātmanā) - by the great-souled (one); पौराणाम् (paurāṇām) - of the citizens; हितकामेन (hitakāmena) - with desire for welfare; सगरेण (sagareṇa) - by Sagara; विवासितः (vivāsitaḥ) - banished;]
(This to you all has been told, as the son by the great-souled for the citizens' welfare, by Sagara, was banished.)
All this has been told to you, how the son was banished by the great-souled Sagara, desiring the welfare of the citizens. (03-106-16)
अंशुमांस्तु महेष्वासो यदुक्तः सगरेण ह। तत्ते सर्वं प्रवक्ष्यामि कीर्त्यमानं निबोध मे ॥०३-१०६-१७॥
aṁśumāṁs tu maheṣvāso yad uktaḥ sagareṇa ha। tat te sarvaṁ pravakṣyāmi kīrtyamānaṁ nibodha me॥03-106-17॥
[अंशुमान् (aṁśumān) - Aṁśumān (proper noun); तु (tu) - but; महेष्वासः (maheṣvāsaḥ) - great archer; यत् (yat) - which; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - spoken; सगरेण (sagareṇa) - by Sagara; ह (ha) - indeed; तत् (tat) - that; ते (te) - to you; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; प्रवक्ष्यामि (pravakṣyāmi) - I shall relate; कीर्त्यमानम् (kīrtyamānam) - being proclaimed; निबोध (nibodha) - know (imperative); मे (me) - from me;]
(Aṁśumān, but, great archer, which was spoken by Sagara indeed, that to you all I shall relate, being proclaimed, know from me.)
O Aṁśumān, great archer, I shall tell you all that was spoken by Sagara; listen to what is being proclaimed by me. (03-106-17)

Sagara said.
पितुश्च तेऽहं त्यागेन पुत्राणां निधनेन च। अलाभेन तथाश्वस्य परितप्यामि पुत्रक ॥०३-१०६-१८॥
pituś ca te'haṃ tyāgena putrāṇāṃ nidhānena ca। alābhena tathāśvasya paritapyāmi putraka ॥03-106-18॥
[पितुश् (pituḥ) - of father; च (ca) - and; ते (te) - your; अहम् (aham) - I; त्यागेन (tyāgena) - by the loss; पुत्राणाम् (putrāṇām) - of sons; निधनेन (nidhānena) - by the death; च (ca) - and; अलाभेन (alābhena) - by the lack; तथा (tathā) - also; अश्वस्य (aśvasya) - of the horse; परितप्यामि (paritapyāmi) - I am grieved; पुत्रक (putraka) - O son;]
(Of father and your, I by the loss, of sons by the death and, by the lack also of the horse, I am grieved, O son.)
O son, I am grieved by the loss of your father, by the death of the sons, and also by the lack of the horse. (03-106-18)
तस्माद्दुःखाभिसन्तप्तं यज्ञविघ्नाच्च मोहितम्। हयस्यानयनात्पौत्र नरकान्मां समुद्धर ॥०३-१०६-१९॥
tasmādduḥkhābhisantaptaṃ yajñavighnācca mohitaṃ। hayasyānayanātpautra narakānmāṃ samuddhara ॥03-106-19॥

(Therefore, afflicted by suffering and deluded by the obstruction of the sacrifice, O grandson, because of the loss of the horse, from hell, me lift up.)
Therefore, O grandson, as I am afflicted by suffering, deluded by the obstruction of the sacrifice, and due to the loss of the horse, lift me up from hell. (03-106-19)

(Aṃśumān, thus addressed however by Sagara, the great-souled, went out of sorrow to that region where indeed the earth was torn apart.)
Aṃśumān, having been thus addressed by the great-souled Sagara, went, out of grief, to that place where the earth had truly been split. (03-106-20)
स तु तेनैव मार्गेण समुद्रं प्रविवेश ह। अपश्यच्च महात्मानं कपिलं तुरगं च तम् ॥०३-१०६-२१॥
sa tu tenaiva mārgeṇa samudraṃ praviveśa ha। apaśyacca mahātmānaṃ kapilaṃ turagaṃ ca tam॥03-106-21॥

(He but by that very path entered the ocean indeed. And he saw the great-souled Kapila and the horse and him.)

स दृष्ट्वा तेजसो राशिं पुराणमृषिसत्तमम्। प्रणम्य शिरसा भूमौ कार्यमस्मै न्यवेदयत् ॥०३-१०६-२२॥

(He, having seen the mass of splendor—the ancient, supreme among sages—and having bowed with his head to the ground, the task to him he reported.)
Having seen the radiant mass—the most venerable of ancient sages—he bowed with his head to the ground and reported his task to him. (03-106-22)
ततः प्रीतो महातेजाः कलिपोंऽशुमतोऽभवत्। उवाच चैनं धर्मात्मा वरदोऽस्मीति भारत ॥०३-१०६-२३॥
tataḥ prīto mahātejāḥ kalipo'ṁśumato'bhavat. uvāca cainaṁ dharmātmā varado'smīti bhārata ॥03-106-23॥

(Then the pleased, great-splendored portion of Kali, the radiant one, became, and the righteous-souled, grantor of boons said to him thus, "I am the bestower of boons," O Bhārata.)
Then the pleased, mighty and radiant form—a portion of Kali—appeared, and the righteous one, bestower of boons, said to him, "I am the granter of boons," O Bhārata. (03-106-23)
स वव्रे तुरगं तत्र प्रथमं यज्ञकारणात्। द्वितीयमुदकं वव्रे पितॄणां पावनेप्सया ॥०३-१०६-२४॥
sa vavre turagaṃ tatra prathamaṃ yajñakāraṇāt । dvitīyamudakaṃ vavre pitṝṇāṃ pāvanepsayā ॥03-106-24॥
[स (sa) - he; वव्रे (vavre) - chose; तुरगं (turagam) - horse; तत्र (tatra) - there; प्रथमं (prathamam) - first; यज्ञकारणात् (yajñakāraṇāt) - for the purpose of sacrifice; द्वितीयम् (dvitīyam) - second; उदकं (udakam) - water; वव्रे (vavre) - chose; पितॄणां (pitṝṇām) - of the ancestors; पावनेप्सया (pāvan-epsayā) - with desire for purification;]
(He chose the horse there first for the purpose of sacrifice. The second, he chose water, with desire for the purification of the ancestors.)

तमुवाच महातेजाः कपिलो मुनिपुङ्गवः। ददानि तव भद्रं ते यद्यत्प्रार्थयसेऽनघ ॥०३-१०६-२५॥
tam uvāca mahā-tejāḥ kapilaḥ muni-puṅgavaḥ। dadāni tava bhadraṃ te yadyat prārthayase 'nagha ॥03-106-25॥

(To him, the great-brilliance Kapila, the foremost sage, said: "I shall give you blessing, to you, whatever you request, O sinless one." (03-106-25))
Kapila, the sage of great brilliance, said to him: "O sinless one, I shall grant you whatever blessing you request." (03-106-25)
त्वयि क्षमा च धर्मश्च सत्यं चापि प्रतिष्ठितम्। त्वया कृतार्थः सगरः पुत्रवांश्च त्वया पिता ॥०३-१०६-२६॥
tvayi kṣamā ca dharmaś ca satyaṁ cāpi pratiṣṭhitam। tvayā kṛtārthaḥ sagaraḥ putravāṁś ca tvayā pitā ॥03-106-26॥
[त्वयि (tvayi) - in you; क्षमा (kṣamā) - forgiveness; च (ca) - and; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - righteousness; च (ca) - and; सत्यं (satyaṁ) - truth; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; प्रतिष्ठितम् (pratiṣṭhitam) - established; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; कृतार्थः (kṛtārthaḥ) - one whose purpose is fulfilled; सगरः (sagaraḥ) - Sagara; पुत्रवान् (putravān) - one having sons; च (ca) - and; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; पिता (pitā) - the father;]
(In you, forgiveness and righteousness and truth also are established; by you, Sagara whose purpose is fulfilled, and the father with sons is by you.)
Forgiveness, righteousness, and truth all reside in you; by your deeds, Sagara achieved his purpose, and both father and sons became fulfilled through you. (03-106-26)
तव चैव प्रभावेन स्वर्गं यास्यन्ति सागराः। पौत्रश्च ते त्रिपथगां त्रिदिवादानयिष्यति ॥ पावनार्थं सागराणां तोषयित्वा महेश्वरम् ॥०३-१०६-२७॥
tava caiva prabhāvena svargaṃ yāsyanti sāgarāḥ। pautraś ca te tripathagāṃ tridivād ānayiṣyati॥ pāvanārthaṃ sāgarāṇāṃ toṣayitvā maheśvaram॥03-106-27॥
[तव (tava) - of you; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; प्रभावेन (prabhāvena) - by (your) power; स्वर्गम् (svargam) - heaven; यास्यन्ति (yāsyanti) - will go; सागराः (sāgarāḥ) - the oceans; पौत्रः (pautraḥ) - grandson; च (ca) - and; ते (te) - your; त्रिपथगाम् (tripathagām) - the one going through three paths (the river Gaṅgā); त्रिदिवात् (tridivāt) - from heaven; आनयिष्यति (ānayiṣyati) - will bring; पावनार्थम् (pāvanārtham) - for the purpose of purification; सागराणाम् (sāgarāṇām) - of the oceans; तोषयित्वा (toṣayitvā) - having pleased; महेश्वरम् (maheśvaram) - the great Lord (Śiva); ०३-१०६-२७ (03-106-27) - (3-106-27);]
(By your power, the oceans will go to heaven, and your grandson will bring the tripathagā (Ganga) from heaven. For the purpose of purification of the oceans, having pleased the great Lord, (this will happen). (3-106-27))
By your power, the oceans will ascend to heaven, and your grandson will bring the river Ganga from heaven. To purify the oceans, having pleased the great Lord Śiva, this will occur. (3-106-27)
हयं नयस्व भद्रं ते यज्ञियं नरपुङ्गव। यज्ञः समाप्यतां तात सगरस्य महात्मनः ॥०३-१०६-२८॥
hayaṃ nayasva bhadraṃ te yajñiyaṃ narapuṅgava। yajñaḥ samāpyatāṃ tāta sagarasya mahātmanaḥ ॥03-106-28॥
[हयम् (hayaṃ) - horse; नयस्व (nayasva) - bring; भद्रं (bhadraṃ) - auspicious; ते (te) - for you; यज्ञियम् (yajñiyam) - suitable for sacrifice; नरपुङ्गव (narapuṅgava) - best among men; यज्ञः (yajñaḥ) - sacrifice; समाप्यताम् (samāpyatām) - let it be completed; तात (tāta) - dear father; सगरस्य (sagarasya) - of Sagara; महात्मनः (mahātmanaḥ) - great-souled;]
(Bring the horse, auspicious for you, suitable for sacrifice, O best among men. Let the sacrifice be completed, dear father, of Sagara the great-souled.)
O best among men, bring the sacrificial horse that is auspicious for you. Dear father, let the sacrifice of the great-souled Sagara be completed. (03-106-28)
अंशुमानेवमुक्तस्तु कपिलेन महात्मना। आजगाम हयं गृह्य यज्ञवाटं महात्मनः ॥०३-१०६-२९॥
aṃśumān evam uktas tu kapilena mahātmanā। ājagāma hayaṃ gṛhya yajñavāṭaṃ mahātmanaḥ॥03-106-29॥
[अंशुमान् (aṃśumān) - Aṃśumān; एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - addressed; तु (tu) - but; कपिलेन (kapilena) - by Kapila; महात्मना (mahātmanā) - by the great-souled (one); आजगाम (ājagāma) - came; हयम् (hayaṃ) - the horse; गृह्य (gṛhya) - having taken; यज्ञवाटम् (yajñavāṭam) - the sacrificial enclosure; महात्मनः (mahātmanaḥ) - of the great-souled (one);]
(Aṃśumān thus addressed but by Kapila by the great-souled (one), came the horse having taken to the sacrificial enclosure of the great-souled (one).)
Thus, Aṃśumān, having been addressed by the great-souled Kapila, took the horse and went to the sacrificial enclosure of the great-souled one. (3-106-29)
सोऽभिवाद्य ततः पादौ सगरस्य महात्मनः। मूर्ध्नि तेनाप्युपाघ्रातस्तस्मै सर्वं न्यवेदयत् ॥०३-१०६-३०॥
so'bhivādya tataḥ pādau sagarasya mahātmanaḥ। mūrdhni tenāpyupāghrātas tasmai sarvaṃ nyavedayat॥03-106-30॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; अभिवाद्य (abhivādya) - having saluted; ततः (tataḥ) - then; पादौ (pādau) - feet (dual); सगरस्य (sagarasya) - of Sagara; महात्मनः (mahātmanaḥ) - the great-souled; मूर्ध्नि (mūrdhni) - on the head; तेन (tena) - by him; अपि (api) - also; उपाघ्रातः (upāghrātaḥ) - smelled (as a gesture of blessing); तस्मै (tasmai) - to him; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; न्यवेदयत् (nyavedayat) - he reported;]
(He, having saluted then the feet of Sagara the great-souled, on the head by him also being smelled (as a blessing), to him all he reported.)
He then respectfully saluted the feet of the great-souled Sagara, who also blessed him by smelling his head, and reported everything to him. (03-106-30)
यथा दृष्टं श्रुतं चापि सागराणां क्षयं तथा। तं चास्मै हयमाचष्ट यज्ञवाटमुपागतम् ॥०३-१०६-३१॥
yathā dṛṣṭaṃ śrutaṃ cāpi sāgarāṇāṃ kṣayaṃ tathā। taṃ cāsmai hayam ācaṣṭa yajñavāṭam upāgatam ॥03-106-31॥
[यथा (yathā) - just as; दृष्टं (dṛṣṭam) - seen; श्रुतं (śrutam) - heard; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; सागराणां (sāgarāṇām) - of the oceans; क्षयं (kṣayam) - destruction; तथा (tathā) - so; तं (taṃ) - him; च (ca) - and; अस्मै (asmai) - to him; हयम् (hayam) - horse; आचष्ट (ācaṣṭa) - reported; यज्ञवाटम् (yajñavāṭam) - sacrificial enclosure; उपागतम् (upāgatam) - arrived;]
(Just as seen, heard, and also the destruction of the oceans so; him and to him the horse reported (as) having arrived at the sacrificial enclosure.)
Just as both seen and heard is the destruction of the oceans, so he reported to him that the horse had arrived at the sacrificial enclosure. (03-106-31)
तच्छ्रुत्वा सगरो राजा पुत्रजं दुःखमत्यजत्। अंशुमन्तं च सम्पूज्य समापयत तं क्रतुम् ॥०३-१०६-३२॥
tacchrutvā sagaro rājā putrajaṃ duḥkham atyajat। aṃśumantaṃ ca sampūjya samāpayata taṃ kratum॥03-106-32॥
[तत् (tat) - that; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; सगरः (sagaraḥ) - Sagara; राजा (rājā) - king; पुत्रजम् (putrajam) - produced by (his) son; दुःखम् (duḥkham) - pain; अत्यजत् (atyajat) - he abandoned; अंशुमन्तम् (aṃśumantam) - Aṃśumant; च (ca) - and; सम्पूज्य (sampūjya) - having honoured; समापयत् (samāpayat) - he completed; तं (tam) - that; क्रतुम् (kratum) - sacrifice;]
(That having heard, Sagara king the pain produced by (his) son abandoned. Aṃśumant and having honoured, he completed that sacrifice.)
Having heard that, King Sagara abandoned the pain caused by his son. After honouring Aṃśumant, he completed that sacrifice. (03-106-32)
समाप्तयज्ञः सगरो देवैः सर्वैः सभाजितः। पुत्रत्वे कल्पयामास समुद्रं वरुणालयम् ॥०३-१०६-३३॥
samāptayajñaḥ sagaro devaiḥ sarvaiḥ sabhājitaḥ. putratve kalpayāmāsa samudraṃ varuṇālayam ॥03-106-33॥
[समाप्तयज्ञः (samāptayajñaḥ) - whose sacrifice was completed; सगरः (sagaraḥ) - Sagara; देवैः (devaiḥ) - by the gods; सर्वैः (sarvaiḥ) - by all; सभाजितः (sabhājitaḥ) - was honoured; पुत्रत्वे (putratve) - in the state of a son; कल्पयामास (kalpayāmāsa) - designated; समुद्रम् (samudram) - the ocean; वरुणालयम् (varuṇālayam) - the abode of Varuṇa;]
(The sacrifice having been completed, Sagara, honoured by all the gods, designated the ocean, the abode of Varuṇa, in the state of a son.)
After completing his sacrifice, Sagara, honored by all the gods, appointed the ocean, the abode of Varuṇa, as his son. (03-106-33)
प्रशास्य सुचिरं कालं राज्यं राजीवलोचनः। पौत्रे भारं समावेश्य जगाम त्रिदिवं तदा ॥०३-१०६-३४॥
praśāsya suciraṃ kālaṃ rājyaṃ rājīvalocanaḥ। pautre bhāraṃ samāveśya jagāma tridivaṃ tadā ॥03-106-34॥
[प्रशास्य (praśāsya) - having ruled; सुचिरं (suciraṃ) - for a very long; कालं (kālaṃ) - time; राज्यं (rājyaṃ) - kingdom; राजीवलोचनः (rājīvalocanaḥ) - the lotus-eyed (one); पौत्रे (pautre) - to his grandson; भारं (bhāraṃ) - the burden; समावेश्य (samāveśya) - having entrusted; जगाम (jagāma) - went; त्रिदिवं (tridivaṃ) - to heaven; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(Having ruled the kingdom for a very long time, the lotus-eyed (one), having entrusted the burden to his grandson, then went to heaven.)
After ruling the kingdom for a long period, the lotus-eyed king entrusted the responsibilities to his grandson and then departed to heaven. (03-106-34)
अंशुमानपि धर्मात्मा महीं सागरमेखलाम्। प्रशशास महाराज यथैवास्य पितामहः ॥०३-१०६-३५॥
aṁśumān api dharmātmā mahīṁ sāgaramekhalām। praśaśāsa mahārāja yathaivāsya pitāmahaḥ ॥03-106-35॥
[अंशुमान् (aṁśumān) - Aṁśumān; (a proper name; the king's name); अपि (api) - also; धर्मात्मा (dharmātmā) - virtuous in nature; righteous soul; महीं (mahīm) - the earth; सागरमेखलाम् (sāgaramekhalām) - girdled by the ocean; प्रशशास (praśaśāsa) - ruled; governed; महाराज (mahārāja) - the great king; यथा (yathā) - just as; एव (eva) - indeed; even; surely; अस्य (asya) - his; पितामहः (pitāmahaḥ) - grandfather;]
(Aṁśumān also, the righteous-souled, the earth girdled by the ocean, ruled, the great king, just as indeed his grandfather.)
Aṁśumān also, a righteous king, ruled the earth surrounded by the ocean, just as his grandfather did. (03-106-35)
तस्य पुत्रः समभवद्दिलीपो नाम धर्मवित्। तस्मै राज्यं समाधाय अंशुमानपि संस्थितः ॥०३-१०६-३६॥

दिलीपस्तु ततः श्रुत्वा पितॄणां निधनं महत्। पर्यतप्यत दुःखेन तेषां गतिमचिन्तयत् ॥०३-१०६-३७॥
dilīpastu tataḥ śrutvā pitṝṇāṃ nidhanaṃ mahat। paryatapyata duḥkhena teṣāṃ gatimacintayat ॥03-106-37॥
[दिलीपः (dilīpaḥ) - Dilīpa (king's name); तु (tu) - but; indeed; ततः (tataḥ) - then; after that; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; पितॄणाम् (pitṝṇām) - of (his) ancestors; of forefathers; निधनम् (nidhanaṃ) - death; passing away; महत् (mahat) - great; immense; पर्यतप्यत (paryatapyata) - was tormented; suffered; दुःखेन (duḥkhena) - with sorrow; by grief; तेषाम् (teṣām) - their; गतिम् (gatim) - the state; destination; fate; अचिन्तयत् (acintayat) - pondered; considered;]
(Dilīpa but then having heard of ancestors' great death was tormented with sorrow; their fate he pondered.)
But Dilīpa, when he heard of the great death of his ancestors, was tormented with grief and pondered their fate. (3-106-37)
गङ्गावतरणे यत्नं सुमहच्चाकरोन्नृपः। न चावतारयामास चेष्टमानो यथाबलम् ॥०३-१०६-३८॥
gaṅgāvataraṇe yatnaṃ sumahaccākaronnṛpaḥ। na cāvatārayāmāsa ceṣṭamāno yathābalam ॥03-106-38॥
[गङ्गावतरणे (gaṅgā-avataraṇe) - in bringing down the Ganga; यत्नं (yatnam) - effort; सुमहत् (su-mahat) - very great; च (ca) - and; अकरोत् (akarot) - he did; नृपः (nṛpaḥ) - the king; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; अवतारयामास (avatārayāmāsa) - he caused to descend; चेष्टमानः (ceṣṭamānaḥ) - striving; यथाबलम् (yathā-balam) - according to (his) strength;]
(In bringing down the Ganga, a very great effort the king did; but he did not cause (her) to descend, striving according to (his) strength.)
The king made a great effort to bring down the Ganga; but despite striving to the best of his ability, he did not succeed in causing her descent. (03-106-38)
तस्य पुत्रः समभवच्छ्रीमान्धर्मपरायणः। भगीरथ इति ख्यातः सत्यवागनसूयकः ॥०३-१०६-३९॥

(His son was born, fortunate and devoted to dharma. Bhagīratha thus (was) famous, truth-speaking, devoid of envy.)
His son was born, a fortunate and dharma-devoted person, Bhagīratha, who became famous as a speaker of truth and free of envy. (03-106-39)
अभिषिच्य तु तं राज्ये दिलीपो वनमाश्रितः। तपःसिद्धिसमायोगात्स राजा भरतर्षभ ॥ वनाज्जगाम त्रिदिवं कालयोगेन भारत ॥०३-१०६-४०॥
abhiṣicya tu taṃ rājye dilīpo vanam āśritaḥ। tapaḥsiddhisamāyogāt sa rājā bharatarṣabha॥ vanāj jagāma tridivaṃ kālayogena bhārata॥03-106-40॥
[अभिषिच्य (abhiṣicya) - having consecrated; तु (tu) - but; तं (taṃ) - him; राज्ये (rājye) - on the throne; दिलीपः (dilīpaḥ) - Dilīpa (king Dilīpa); वनम् (vanam) - forest; आश्रितः (āśritaḥ) - having resorted; तपःसिद्धि-समायोगात् (tapaḥsiddhi-samāyogāt) - by the attainment of success in austerities; सः (saḥ) - he; राजा (rājā) - king; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O best of the Bharatas; वनात् (vanāt) - from the forest; जगाम (jagāma) - went; त्रिदिवम् (tridivam) - to heaven; कालयोगेन (kālayogena) - by the conjunction of time (i.e., at the proper time); भारत (bhārata) - O descendant of Bharata;]
(Having consecrated him on the throne, but Dilīpa, having resorted to the forest, by attainment of success in austerities, he, the king, O best of Bharatas, from the forest went to heaven by the conjunction of time, O descendant of Bharata. (03-106-40))
But after consecrating him on the throne, King Dilīpa retired to the forest. Having attained perfection through austerities, that king, O best of the Bharatas, departed from the forest to heaven at the destined time, O descendant of Bharata. (03-106-40)
