सा तु नाव्याश्रमं चक्रे राजकार्यार्थसिद्धये। संदेशाच्चैव नृपतेः स्वबुद्ध्या चैव भारत ॥०३-१११-१॥
sā tu nāvyāśramaṃ cakre rājakāryārthasiddhaye। sandeśāc caiva nṛpateḥ svabuddhyā caiva bhārata ॥03-111-1॥
[सा (sā) - she; तु (tu) - but; नाव्याश्रमं (nāvyāśramam) - new settlement; चक्रे (cakre) - made; राजकार्यार्थसिद्धये (rājakāryārthasiddhaye) - for the attainment of royal affairs; संदेशात् (sandeśāt) - from the message; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; नृपतेः (nṛpateḥ) - of the king; स्वबुद्ध्या (svabuddhyā) - by her own wisdom; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(She but made a new settlement for the attainment of royal affairs, from the message of the king and indeed by her own wisdom, O Bhārata.)
But she established a new settlement to accomplish the king's business, both according to his message and by her own judgment, O Bhārata. (03-111-1)
नानापुष्पफलैर्वृक्षैः कृत्रिमैरुपशोभितम्। नानागुल्मलतोपेतैः स्वादुकामफलप्रदैः ॥०३-१११-२॥
nānā-puṣpa-phalair vṛkṣaiḥ kṛtrimaiḥ upaśobhitam। nānā-gulma-latā-upetaiḥ svādu-kāma-phala-pradaih ॥03-111-2॥
[नाना (nānā) - various; पुष्प (puṣpa) - flowers; फलैः (phalaiḥ) - with fruits; वृक्षैः (vṛkṣaiḥ) - with trees; कृत्रिमैः (kṛtrimaiḥ) - artificial; उपशोभितम् (upaśobhitam) - adorned; नाना (nānā) - various; गुल्म (gulma) - bushes; लता (latā) - creepers; उपेतैः (upetaiḥ) - endowed with; स्वादु (svādu) - sweet; काम (kāma) - desired; फल (phala) - fruits; प्रदैः (pradaih) - givers;]
(Adorned with various artificial trees with flowers and fruits, (and) endowed with various bushes and creepers, which give desired sweet fruits.)

अतीव रमणीयं तदतीव च मनोहरम्। चक्रे नाव्याश्रमं रम्यमद्भुतोपमदर्शनम् ॥०३-१११-३॥

ततो निबध्य तां नावमदूरे काश्यपाश्रमात्। चारयामास पुरुषैर्विहारं तस्य वै मुनेः ॥०३-१११-४॥
tato nibadhya tāṃ nāvam adūre kāśyapāśramāt। cārayām āsa puruṣair vihāraṃ tasya vai muneḥ॥03-111-4॥

(Then, having moored that boat not far from Kāśyapa's hermitage, he caused by men the pleasure-ride for the sage indeed.)

ततो दुहितरं वेश्या समाधायेतिकृत्यताम्। दृष्ट्वान्तरं काश्यपस्य प्राहिणोद्बुद्धिसंमताम् ॥०३-१११-५॥
tato duhitaraṃ veśyā samādhāyetikṛtyatām। dṛṣṭvāntaraṃ kāśyapasya prāhiṇodbuddhisaṃmatām ॥03-111-5॥

(Then having entrusted the daughter to the courtesan, having thus accomplished the act, having seen an opportunity of Kāśyapa, he sent (her), approved by intelligence.)
Then, having entrusted the daughter to the courtesan and having accomplished this, upon seeing an opportunity concerning Kāśyapa, he sent her forth, as agreed by prudent counsel. (03-111-5)
सा तत्र गत्वा कुशला तपोनित्यस्य संनिधौ। आश्रमं तं समासाद्य ददर्श तमृषेः सुतम् ॥०३-१११-६॥

[सा (sā) - she; तत्र (tatra) - there; गत्वा (gatvā) - having gone; कुशला (kuśalā) - skillful; fortunate; तपोनित्यस्य (taponityasya) - of him who is always engaged in austerities; संनिधौ (saṃnidhau) - in the presence; आश्रमं (āśramam) - hermitage; तं (taṃ) - that; समासाद्य (samāsādya) - having reached; ददर्श (dadarśa) - she saw; तम् (tam) - him; ऋषेः (ṛṣeḥ) - of the sage; सुतम् (sutam) - son;]
(She there having gone, skillful, in the presence of him always devoted to austerity, the hermitage that having reached, saw him, the sage's son.)
She went there, and being skillful, reached the hermitage in the presence of the ever-austere sage, and saw the sage's son. (03-111-6)
वेश्योवाच॥

The courtesan said:
कच्चिन्मुने कुशलं तापसानां; कच्चिच्च वो मूलफलं प्रभूतम्। कच्चिद्भवान्रमते चाश्रमेऽस्मिं; स्त्वां वै द्रष्टुं साम्प्रतमागतोऽस्मि ॥०३-१११-७॥
kaccin mune kuśalaṁ tāpasānāṁ; kaccic ca vo mūlaphalaṁ prabhūtam. kaccid bhavān ramate cāśrame'smiṁ; tvāṁ vai draṣṭuṁ sāmpratam āgato'smi ॥03-111-7॥

(Surely, O sage, the well-being of the ascetics (is there); and surely your roots and fruits are abundant. Surely your honor enjoys in this hermitage; to see you indeed, at present, I have come.)
O sage, is everything well with the ascetics? And do you have an abundance of roots and fruits? Are you enjoying life in this hermitage? Indeed, I have come now to see you. (03-111-7)
कच्चित्तपो वर्धते तापसानां; पिता च ते कच्चिदहीनतेजाः। कच्चित्त्वया प्रीयते चैव विप्र; कच्चित्स्वाध्यायः क्रियते ऋश्यशृङ्ग ॥०३-१११-८॥
kaccittapo vardhate tāpasānāṃ; pitā ca te kaccidahīnatejāḥ। kaccittvayā prīyate caiva vipra; kaccitsvādhyāyaḥ kriyate ṛśyaśṛṅga ॥03-111-8॥

(Surely, the austerity of the ascetics is increasing; and your father surely is not diminished in splendour. Surely, by you he is indeed pleased, O Brahmin; surely self-study is performed, O Ṛśyaśṛṅga. (03-111-8))
Are the austerities of the ascetics increasing? And is your father still undiminished in his brilliance? Is he pleased with you, O Brahmin? Are you regularly engaged in your self-study, O Ṛśyaśṛṅga? (03-111-8)

ऋद्धो भवाञ्ज्योतिरिव प्रकाशते; मन्ये चाहं त्वामभिवादनीयम्। पाद्यं वै ते सम्प्रदास्यामि कामा; द्यथाधर्मं फलमूलानि चैव ॥०३-१११-९॥
ṛddho bhavāñjyotiriva prakāśate; manye cāhaṃ tvām abhivādanīyam. pādyaṃ vai te sampradāsyāmi kāmā; dyathādharmam phalamūlāni caiva ॥03-111-9॥

(Prosperous you like light shines; I think and I you to be saluted. Water for feet indeed to you I shall give willingly; according to righteousness fruits and roots and also.)
You, who are prosperous, shine like a light; I consider you worthy of greeting. I shall indeed offer you water for your feet willingly, and also, according to righteousness, fruits and roots. (03-111-9)
कौश्यां बृस्यामास्स्व यथोपजोषं; कृष्णाजिनेनावृतायां सुखायाम्। क्व चाश्रमस्तव किं नाम चेदं; व्रतं ब्रह्मंश्चरसि हि देववत्त्वम् ॥०३-१११-१०॥
kauśyāṃ bṛsyāmāssva yathopajoṣaṃ; kṛṣṇājinenaāvṛtāyāṃ sukhāyām। kva cāśramas-tava kiṃ nāma cedaṃ; vrataṃ brahmaṃś-carasi hi devavattvam ॥03-111-10॥

(On a silk cover, on a couch, sit as is comfortable; on the comfortable one covered with a black antelope skin. Where and what is your hermitage, and what is the name of this vow, O Brāhmaṇa, do you indeed observe divine nature? (03-111-10))

ममाश्रमः काश्यपपुत्र रम्य; स्त्रियोजनं शैलमिमं परेण। तत्र स्वधर्मोऽनभिवादनं नो; न चोदकं पाद्यमुपस्पृशामः ॥०३-१११-११॥
mamāśramaḥ kāśyapaputra ramya; striyo janaṃ śailam imaṃ pareṇa. tatra svadharmo'na­bhivādanaṃ no; na codakaṃ pādyam upaspṛśāmaḥ ॥03-111-11॥

(My hermitage, O son of Kāśyapa, is pleasant; women are far from this mountain. There, proper custom is not saluting for us; and we do not touch water for washing the feet.)

फलानि पक्वानि ददानि तेऽहं; भल्लातकान्यामलकानि चैव। परूषकानीङ्गुदधन्वनानि; प्रियालानां कामकारं कुरुष्व ॥०३-१११-१२॥
phalāni pakvāni dadāni te'haṃ; bhallātakānyāmalakāni caiva. parūṣakānīṅgudadhanvanāni; priyālānāṃ kāmakāraṃ kuruṣva ॥03-111-12॥

(Ripened fruits I give to you; marking-nut fruits, āmalaka fruits also; jujube fruits, fruits of the inguda forests; of the priyāla trees, desire-fulfilling, do (you make).)
I give you ripe fruits—marking-nuts, āmalaka fruits as well, jujube fruits, and the fruits of the inguda forests; do what pleases you with the priyāla fruits that fulfill wishes. (03-111-12)

sā tāni sarvāṇi visarjayitvā; bhakṣān mahārhān pradadau tato'smai। tāni ṛśyaśṛṅgasya mahārasāni; bhṛśaṃ surūpāṇi ruciṃ dadur hi॥03-111-13॥

[सर्जानशोकाङ्तिलकान्च (sarjānaśokāṃstilakān ca) - sarja trees, aśoka trees, tilaka trees and; वृक्षान् (vṛkṣān) - trees; प्रपुष्पितान् (prapuṣpitān) - blossomed; अवनाम्य (avanāmya) - having bent down; आवभज्य (āvabhajya) - having separated; विलज्जमाना इव (vilajjamānā iva) - as if feeling shy; मदाभिभूता (madābhibhūtā) - overcome by passion; प्रलोभयामास (pralobhayāmāsa) - she tempted; सुतं (sutaṃ) - the son; महर्षेः (maharṣeḥ) - of the great sage;]
(Sarja trees, aśoka trees, tilaka trees and trees, blossomed, having bent down, having separated, as if feeling shy, overcome by passion, she tempted the son of the great sage.)
She, overcome by passion, as if shy, bent down and separated blossomed sarja, aśoka, tilaka, and other trees, and tempted the son of the great sage. (03-111-16)
अथर्श्यशृङ्गं विकृतं समीक्ष्य; पुनः पुनः पीड्य च कायमस्य। अवेक्षमाणा शनकैर्जगाम; कृत्वाग्निहोत्रस्य तदापदेशम् ॥०३-१११-१७॥
atharṣyaśṛṅgaṁ vikṛtaṁ samīkṣya; punaḥ punaḥ pīḍya ca kāyam asya. avekṣamāṇā śanakaiḥ jagāma; kṛtvā agnihotrasya tad āpadeśam ॥03-111-17॥
[अथ (atha) - then; ऋश्यशृङ्गं (ṛṣyaśṛṅgam) - Ṛṣyaśṛṅga; विकृतं (vikṛtam) - disturbed; changed; समीक्ष्य (samīkṣya) - having observed; पुनः पुनः (punaḥ punaḥ) - again and again; पीड्य (pīḍya) - pressing; tormenting; च (ca) - and; कायम् (kāyam) - body; अस्य (asya) - his; अवेक्षमाणा (avekṣamāṇā) - observing; watching; शनकैः (śanakaiḥ) - slowly; जगाम (jagāma) - she went; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having done; अग्निहोत्रस्य (agnihotrasya) - of agnihotra; तत् (tat) - that; आपदेशम् (āpadeśam) - pretext; excuse;]
(Then, having observed Ṛṣyaśṛṅga disturbed, again and again pressing also his body. The woman, observing slowly, departed, having made that excuse of the agnihotra.)
Then, seeing Ṛṣyaśṛṅga disturbed, again and again pressing his body, she, watching carefully, slowly departed, having made agnihotra the pretext. (03-111-17)
तस्यां गतायां मदनेन मत्तो; विचेतनश्चाभवदृश्यशृङ्गः। तामेव भावेन गतेन शून्यो; विनिःश्वसन्नार्तरूपो बभूव ॥०३-१११-१८॥
tasyāṃ gatāyāṃ madanena matto; vicetanaś cābhavad ṛśyaśṛṅgaḥ. tām eva bhāvena gatena śūnyaḥ; viniḥśvasan ārta-rūpo babhūva ॥03-111-18॥
[तस्याम् (tasyām) - in her; गतायाम् (gatāyām) - having gone; departed; मदनेन (madanena) - by Madana (Cupid, the god of love); मत्तः (mattaḥ) - intoxicated; विचेतनः (vicetanaḥ) - bereft of sense; unconscious; च (ca) - and; अभवत् (abhavat) - became; ऋश्यशृङ्गः (ṛśyaśṛṅgaḥ) - Ṛśyaśṛṅga; ताम् (tām) - her; एव (eva) - only; indeed; भावेन (bhāvena) - with emotion; with feeling; गतेन (gatena) - having departed; gone; शून्यः (śūnyaḥ) - empty; void; विनिःश्वसन् (viniḥśvasan) - sighing deeply; आर्तरूपः (ārta-rūpaḥ) - appearing distressed; suffering in form; बभूव (babhūva) - became;]
(In her having gone, intoxicated by Madana, bereft of mind became Ṛśyaśṛṅga; her only, with emotion, having gone, empty, sighing deeply, appearing distressed, he became.)
When she had departed, Ṛśyaśṛṅga, intoxicated by Madana (the god of love), became bereft of sense; he, empty with the loss of her alone, sighing deeply and appearing distressed, became sorrowful. (03-111-18)
ततो मुहूर्ताद्धरिपिङ्गलाक्षः; प्रवेष्टितो रोमभिरा नखाग्रात्। स्वाध्यायवान्वृत्तसमाधियुक्तो; विभाण्डकः काश्यपः प्रादुरासीत् ॥०३-१११-१९॥
tato muhūrtāddharipiṅgalākṣaḥ; praveṣṭito romabhirā nakhāgrāt. svādhyāyavānvṛttasamādhiyukto; vibhāṇḍakaḥ kāśyapaḥ prādurāsīt ॥03-111-19॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; मुहूर्तात् (muhūrtāt) - from a moment; हरि-पिङ्गल-आक्षः (hari-piṅgala-akṣaḥ) - having tawny (yellow-brown) eyes; प्रवेष्टितः (praveṣṭitaḥ) - covered; enveloped; रोमभिः (romabhiḥ) - with hairs; आ (ā) - up to; नखाग्रात् (nakhāgrāt) - from the tips of the nails; स्वाध्यायवान् (svādhyāyavān) - devoted to self-study; वृत्त-समाधि-युक्तः (vṛtta-samādhi-yuktaḥ) - engaged in established concentration; विभाण्डकः (vibhāṇḍakaḥ) - Vibhāṇḍaka; काश्यपः (kāśyapaḥ) - Kāśyapa (sage, of the Kaśyapa lineage); प्रादुरासीत् (prādurāsīt) - appeared;]
(Then, from a moment, (he who was) having tawny eyes, covered with hairs up to the tips of the nails, devoted to self-study, engaged in established concentration, Vibhāṇḍaka, (the sage), Kāśyapa, appeared.)
Then, after a brief moment, Vibhāṇḍaka, the Kāśyapa sage, having tawny eyes, whose body was enveloped with hair from the tips of his nails, endowed with self-study and steady concentration, appeared. (03-111-19)
सोऽपश्यदासीनमुपेत्य पुत्रं; ध्यायन्तमेकं विपरीतचित्तम्। विनिःश्वसन्तं मुहुरूर्ध्वदृष्टिं; विभाण्डकः पुत्रमुवाच दीनम् ॥०३-१११-२०॥
so'paśyad āsīnam upetya putraṃ; dhyāyantam ekaṃ viparīta-cittam। viniḥśvasantam muhur ūrdhva-dṛṣṭim; vibhāṇḍakaḥ putram uvāca dīnam ॥03-111-20॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; अपश्यत् (apaśyat) - saw; आसीनम् (āsīnam) - sitting; उपेत्य (upetya) - approaching; पुत्रम् (putram) - son; ध्यायन्तम् (dhyāyantam) - meditating; एकम् (ekam) - alone; विपरीतचित्तम् (viparīta-cittam) - with disturbed mind; विनिःश्वसन्तम् (viniḥśvasantam) - sighing; मुहु: (muhuḥ) - repeatedly; ऊर्ध्वदृष्टिम् (ūrdhva-dṛṣṭim) - with upward gaze; विभाण्डकः (vibhāṇḍakaḥ) - Vibhāṇḍaka; पुत्रम् (putram) - son; उवाच (uvāca) - spoke; दीनम् (dīnam) - distressed;]
(He, having approached, saw his son sitting, meditating alone, with a disturbed mind, sighing repeatedly, with an upward gaze; Vibhāṇḍaka spoke to his distressed son.)
Having approached, Vibhāṇḍaka saw his son sitting alone, meditating with a disturbed mind, repeatedly sighing and gazing upward; Vibhāṇḍaka addressed his troubled son. (03-111-20)
न कल्प्यन्ते समिधः किं नु तात; कच्चिद्धुतं चाग्निहोत्रं त्वयाद्य। सुनिर्णिक्तं स्रुक्स्रुवं होमधेनुः; कच्चित्सवत्सा च कृता त्वयाद्य ॥०३-१११-२१॥
na kalpyante samidhaḥ kiṁ nu tāta; kacciddhutaṁ cāgnihotraṁ tvayādya| sunirṇiktaṁ sruksruvaṁ homadhenuḥ; kaccitsavatsā ca kṛtā tvayādya ॥03-111-21॥
[न (na) - not; कल्प्यन्ते (kalpyante) - are arranged/prepared; समिधः (samidhaḥ) - sacrificial sticks; किं (kiṁ) - what; नु (nu) - indeed; तात (tāta) - dear (father/son); कच्चित् (kaccit) - whether; धुतं (dhutaṁ) - offered; च (ca) - and; अग्निहोत्रं (agnihotraṁ) - Agnihotra (sacrifice); त्वया (tvayā) - by you; अद्य (adya) - today; सुनिर्णिक्तं (sunirṇiktaṁ) - well-cleaned; स्रुक्-स्रुवं (sruk-sruvaṁ) - ladle and spoon; होमधेनुः (homadhenuḥ) - sacrificial cow; कच्चित् (kaccit) - whether; सवत्सा (savatsā) - with calf; च (ca) - and; कृता (kṛtā) - has been prepared; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; अद्य (adya) - today;]
(Not arranged the sacrificial sticks what indeed, dear; whether offered and Agnihotra by you today. Well-cleaned ladle and spoon sacrificial cow; whether with calf also has been prepared by you today. (03-111-21))
Dear, have not the sacrificial sticks been arranged? Has the Agnihotra offering been performed by you today? Is the ladle and spoon well cleaned? Has the sacrificial cow, along with her calf, also been prepared by you today? (03-111-21)
न वै यथापूर्वमिवासि पुत्र; चिन्तापरश्चासि विचेतनश्च। दीनोऽतिमात्रं त्वमिहाद्य किं नु; पृच्छामि त्वां क इहाद्यागतोऽभूत् ॥०३-१११-२२॥
na vai yathā-pūrvam iva asi putra; cintā-paraś ca asi vicetanaś ca. dīnaḥ ati-mātram tvam iha adya kiṃ nu; pṛcchāmi tvām kaḥ iha adya āgataḥ abhūt ॥03-111-22॥
[न (na) - not; वै (vai) - indeed; यथापूर्वमिव (yathā-pūrvam iva) - as before like; असि (asi) - you are; पुत्र (putra) - son; चिन्तापरः (cintā-paraḥ) - absorbed in worry; च (ca) - and; असि (asi) - you are; विचेतनः (vicetanaḥ) - dispirited; च (ca) - and; दीनः (dīnaḥ) - dejected; अतिमात्रम् (ati-mātram) - excessively; त्वम् (tvam) - you; इह (iha) - here; आद्य (adya) - today; किं (kiṃ) - what; नु (nu) - then; पृच्छामि (pṛcchāmi) - I ask; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; कः (kaḥ) - who; इह (iha) - here; आद्य (adya) - today; आगतः (āgataḥ) - has come; अभूत् (abhūt) - has been;]
(Not indeed as before like you are, son; absorbed in worry and you are dispirited also. Dejected excessively you here today what then; I ask you, who here today has come has been?)
You are not as you were before, my son; you are absorbed in worry and dispirited. You are excessively dejected here today—tell me, what is the reason? I ask you, who has come here today? (03-111-22)
