(He, engaged in Veda-study, Jamadagni, great ascetic, practiced austerity; then the gods, by self-restraint, under control brought.)
Jamadagni, engaged in the study of the Vedas and being a great ascetic, practiced austerities, and by self-restraint, brought the gods under his control. (03-116-1)
स प्रसेनजितं राजन्नधिगम्य नराधिपम्। रेणुकां वरयामास स च तस्मै ददौ नृपः ॥०३-११६-२॥
sa prasēnajitaṃ rājan-nadhigamya narādhipam। rēṇukāṃ varayāmāsa sa ca tasmai dadau nṛpaḥ ॥03-116-2॥

रेणुकां त्वथ सम्प्राप्य भार्यां भार्गवनन्दनः। आश्रमस्थस्तया सार्धं तपस्तेपेऽनुकूलया ॥०३-११६-३॥

तस्याः कुमाराश्चत्वारो जज्ञिरे रामपञ्चमाः। सर्वेषामजघन्यस्तु राम आसीज्जघन्यजः ॥०३-११६-४॥
tasyāḥ kumāraś catvāro jajñire rāma-pañcamāḥ । sarveṣām ajaghanyas tu rāma āsīj jaghanyajaḥ ॥03-116-4॥
[तस्याः (tasyāḥ) - of her; कुमाराः (kumārāḥ) - sons; चत्वारः (catvāraḥ) - four; जज्ञिरे (jajñire) - were born; रामपञ्चमाः (rāma-pañcamāḥ) - Rāma as the fifth; सर्वेषाम् (sarveṣām) - of all; अजघन्यः (ajaghanyaḥ) - not the last born; तु (tu) - but; रामः (rāmaḥ) - Rāma; आसीत् (āsīt) - was; जघन्यजः (jaghanyajaḥ) - the youngest born;]
(Of her, four sons were born, with Rāma as the fifth. Of all, not the last born but Rāma was the youngest born. (03-116-4))

फलाहारेषु सर्वेषु गतेष्वथ सुतेषु वै। रेणुका स्नातुमगमत्कदाचिन्नियतव्रता ॥०३-११६-५॥
phalāhāreṣu sarveṣu gateṣvatha suteṣu vai | reṇukā snātum agamat kadācin niyata-vratā ॥03-116-5॥
[फलाहारेषु (phalāhāreṣu) - in the gatherers of fruits; (among those who live on fruits;) सर्वेषु (sarveṣu) - when all; (of all;) गतेषु (gateṣu) - having departed; (when gone;) अथ (atha) - then; सुतेषु (suteṣu) - sons; (in her sons;) वै (vai) - indeed; रेणुका (reṇukā) - Reṇukā; स्नातुम् (snātum) - to bathe; अगमत् (agamat) - went; कदाचित् (kadācit) - once; (at some time;) नियतव्रता (niyatavratā) - firm in her vows;]
(In the fruit-gatherers, when all sons had departed, then indeed Reṇukā, to bathe, went once, firm in her vows.)
Once, after all her sons who subsisted on fruits had gone out, Reṇukā, steadfast in her vows, went to bathe. (3-116-5)
सा तु चित्ररथं नाम मार्त्तिकावतकं नृपम्। ददर्श रेणुका राजन्नागच्छन्ती यदृच्छया ॥०३-११६-६॥
sā tu citrarathaṃ nāma mārtikāvatakaṃ nṛpam। dadarśa reṇukā rājannāgacchantī yadṛcchayā ॥03-116-6॥
[सा (sā) - she; तु (tu) - but; चित्ररथं (citrarathaṃ) - Citraratha; नाम (nāma) - named; मार्त्तिकावतकं (mārtikāvatakaṃ) - of Mṛttikāvataka (the place); नृपम् (nṛpam) - king; ददर्श (dadarśa) - saw; रेणुका (reṇukā) - Reṇukā; राजन् (rājan) - O king; आगच्छन्ती (āgacchantī) - coming; यदृच्छया (yadṛcchayā) - by chance;]
(She but Citraratha named, of Mṛttikāvataka king, saw Reṇukā, O king, coming by chance.)
But she, O king, Reṇukā, saw by chance Citraratha, the king of Mṛttikāvataka, as he was coming. (03-116-6)
क्रीडन्तं सलिले दृष्ट्वा सभार्यं पद्ममालिनम्। ऋद्धिमन्तं ततस्तस्य स्पृहयामास रेणुका ॥०३-११६-७॥
krīḍantaṃ salile dṛṣṭvā sabhāryaṃ padmamālinam। ṛddhimantaṃ tatas tasya spṛhayāmāsa reṇukā ॥03-116-7॥
[क्रीडन्तं (krīḍantam) - playing; सलिले (salile) - in the water; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; सभार्यं (sabhāryam) - with his wife; पद्ममालिनम् (padmamālinam) - adorned with a garland of lotuses; ऋद्धिमन्तं (ṛddhimantam) - prosperous; ततः (tatas) - then; तस्य (tasya) - of him; स्पृहयामास (spṛhayāmāsa) - desired; रेणुका (reṇukā) - Reṇukā;]
(Playing in the water having seen with his wife, adorned with a garland of lotuses, prosperous, then of him desired Reṇukā.)
Reṇukā, having seen him playing in the water with his wife, adorned with a garland of lotuses and full of prosperity, desired him. (03-116-7)
व्यभिचारात्तु सा तस्मात्क्लिन्नाम्भसि विचेतना। प्रविवेशाश्रमं त्रस्ता तां वै भर्तान्वबुध्यत ॥०३-११६-८॥
vyabhicārāttu sā tasmāt klinna-ambhasi vicetanā। praviveśāśramaṃ trastā tāṃ vai bhartānvabudhyata ॥03-116-8॥
[व्यभिचारात् (vyabhicārāt) - from unchastity; तु (tu) - but; सा (sā) - she; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - from there; क्लिन्नाम्भसि (klinna-ambhasi) - with wet water; विचेतना (vicetanā) - unconscious; प्रविवेश (praviveśa) - entered; आश्रमं (āśramam) - hermitage; त्रस्ता (trastā) - frightened; तां (tāṃ) - her; वै (vai) - indeed; भर्ता (bhartā) - the husband; अन्वबुध्यत (anvabudhyata) - noticed;]
(But from unchastity, she from there, with wet water, unconscious, entered the hermitage, frightened; her indeed the husband noticed.)
But due to unchastity, she—unconscious and wet, frightened—entered the hermitage from there; her husband indeed noticed her. (03-116-8)
स तां दृष्ट्वा च्युतां धैर्याद्ब्राह्म्या लक्ष्म्या विवर्जिताम्। धिक्षब्देन महातेजा गर्हयामास वीर्यवान् ॥०३-११६-९॥
sa tāṃ dṛṣṭvā cyutāṃ dhairyād brāhmyā lakṣmyā vivarjitām। dhikśabdena mahātejā garhayāmāsa vīryavān ॥03-116-9॥

(He, having seen her fallen from courage, deprived of brahmic fortune, with the cry 'dhik', the one endowed with great splendor, the mighty one, censured.)

ततो ज्येष्ठो जामदग्न्यो रुमण्वान्नाम नामतः। आजगाम सुषेणश्च वसुर्विश्वावसुस्तथा ॥०३-११६-१०॥
tato jyeṣṭho jāmadagnyo rumaṇvān nāma nāmataḥ। ājagāma suṣeṇaś ca vasur viśvāvasus tathā ॥03-116-10॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; ज्येष्ठः (jyeṣṭhaḥ) - elder; जामदग्न्यः (jāmadagnyaḥ) - descendant of Jamadagni; रुमण्वान् (rumaṇvān) - Rumanvan; नाम (nāma) - by name; नामतः (nāmataḥ) - named; आजगाम (ājagāma) - came; सुषेणः (suṣeṇaḥ) - Suṣeṇa; च (ca) - and; वसुः (vasuḥ) - Vasu; विश्वावसुः (viśvāvasuḥ) - Viśvāvasu; तथा (tathā) - likewise;]
(Then the elder, a descendant of Jamadagni, named Rumanvan by name, came; Suṣeṇa and Vasu, and likewise Viśvāvasu.)
Then the eldest, Rumanvan by name—a descendant of Jamadagni—came there; Suṣeṇa, Vasu, and also Viśvāvasu.
तानानुपूर्व्याद्भगवान्वधे मातुरचोदयत्। न च ते जातसंमोहाः किञ्चिदूचुर्विचेतसः ॥०३-११६-११॥
tān ānupūrviyāt bhagavān vadhe mātur acodayat। na ca te jāta-sammoḥāḥ kiñcid ūcur vicetasaḥ॥03-116-11॥
[तान् (tān) - them; (those sons of the mother;) आनुपूर्व्यात् (ānupūrviyāt) - in order; (one after another;) भगवान् (bhagavān) - the Blessed Lord; वधे (vadhe) - to the killing; (for the slaying;) मातुः (mātur) - of the mother; अचोदयत् (acodayat) - incited; (urged;) न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; ते (te) - they; जातसंमोहाः (jāta-sammoḥāḥ) - overcome by born delusion; (arising delusion;) किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - anything; ऊचुः (ūcuḥ) - spoke; विचेतसः (vicetasaḥ) - conscious; (attentive;) ॥०३-११६-११॥ (॥03-116-11॥) - ;]
(Them in order the Blessed Lord to the killing of the mother incited. Not and they, overcome by arising delusion, anything spoke, conscious.)
The Blessed Lord incited them, one after another, to kill their mother. But they, being conscious and not overcome by any delusion, did not say anything. (03-116-11)
ततः शशाप तान्कोपात्ते शप्ताश्चेतनां जहुः। मृगपक्षिसधर्माणः क्षिप्रमासञ्जडोपमाः ॥०३-११६-१२॥
tataḥ śaśāpa tān kopātte śaptāś cetanāṃ jahuḥ. mṛgapakṣi-sadharmāṇaḥ kṣipram āsañ jaḍopamāḥ ॥03-116-12॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; शशाप (śaśāpa) - he cursed; तान् (tān) - them; कोपात्ते (kopātte) - by wrath; शप्ताः (śaptāḥ) - the cursed (ones); चेतनाम् (cetanām) - consciousness; जहुः (jahuḥ) - they abandoned; मृगपक्षिसधर्माणः (mṛgapakṣi-sadharmāṇaḥ) - having the nature of beasts and birds; क्षिप्रम् (kṣipram) - quickly; आसन् (āsan) - they became; जडोपमाः (jaḍopamāḥ) - like inert;]
(Then he cursed them by wrath; the cursed ones abandoned consciousness, having the nature of beasts and birds, quickly they became like inert.)
Then, in his wrath, he cursed them; and those who were cursed lost their consciousness, swiftly becoming like insensible beings, resembling beasts and birds. (03-116-12)
ततो रामोऽभ्यगात्पश्चादाश्रमं परवीरहा। तमुवाच महामन्युर्जमदग्निर्महातपाः ॥०३-११६-१३॥
tato rāmo'bhyagāt paścād āśramaṁ paravīrahā। tam uvāca mahāmanyur jamadagniḥ mahātapāḥ ॥03-116-13॥

(Then Rama, destroyer of enemy heroes, later approached the hermitage. To him, the greatly wrathful Jamadagni of great austerity spoke.)

जहीमां मातरं पापां मा च पुत्र व्यथां कृथाः। तत आदाय परशुं रामो मातुः शिरोऽहरत् ॥०३-११६-१४॥
jahī māṃ mātaraṃ pāpāṃ mā ca putra vyathāṃ kṛthāḥ। tata ādāya paraśuṃ rāmo mātuḥ śiro'harat॥ 03-116-14॥
[जहि (jahi) - destroy; इमां (imāṃ) - this (feminine); मातरं (mātaram) - mother; पापां (pāpām) - sinful; मा (mā) - do not; च (ca) - and; पुत्र (putra) - son; व्यथां (vyathām) - grief; कृथाः (kṛthāḥ) - make (do); तत् (tat) - then; आदाय (ādāya) - having taken; परशुम् (paraśum) - axe; रामः (rāmaḥ) - Rāma; मातुः (mātuḥ) - of (his) mother; शिरः (śiraḥ) - head; अहरत् (aharat) - cut off (took away);]
(Destroy this sinful mother. And do not, son, make grief. Then, having taken the axe, Rāma cut off (his) mother's head.)

ततस्तस्य महाराज जमदग्नेर्महात्मनः। कोपो अगच्छत्सहसा प्रसन्नश्चाब्रवीदिदम् ॥०३-११६-१५॥
tatas tasya mahārāja jamadagner mahātmanaḥ। kopo agacchatsa hasā prasannaś cābravīd idam ॥03-116-15॥

(Then his, O great king, of Jamadagni, the great-souled, anger arose suddenly; and, being pleased, said this.)

ममेदं वचनात्तात कृतं ते कर्म दुष्करम्। वृणीष्व कामान्धर्मज्ञ यावतो वाञ्छसे हृदा ॥०३-११६-१६॥
mamedam vacanāttāta kṛtaṃ te karma duṣkaram। vṛṇīṣva kāmāndharmajña yāvato vāñchase hṛdā॥03-116-16॥
[मम (mama) - my; इदं (idaṃ) - this; वचनात् (vacanāt) - by word; तात (tāta) - dear one; कृतं (kṛtam) - done; ते (te) - by you; कर्म (karma) - deed; दुष्करम् (duṣkaram) - difficult; वृणीष्व (vṛṇīṣva) - choose; कामान् (kāmān) - desires; धर्मज्ञ (dharmajña) - knower of dharma; यावतः (yāvataḥ) - as many as; वाञ्छसे (vāñchase) - you wish; हृदा (hṛdā) - in the heart;]
(My this from word, dear one, done by you deed difficult. Choose desires, knower of dharma, as many as you wish in the heart.)

स वव्रे मातुरुत्थानमस्मृतिं च वधस्य वै। पापेन तेन चास्पर्शं भ्रातॄणां प्रकृतिं तथा ॥०३-११६-१७॥
sa vavre mātur utthānam asmṛtiṁ ca vadhyasya vai। pāpena tena ca asparśaṁ bhrātṝṇāṁ prakṛtiṁ tathā॥03-116-17॥
[स (sa) - he; वव्रे (vavre) - chose; मातुः (mātuḥ) - of his mother; उत्थानम् (utthānam) - rising up; अस्मृतिं (asmṛtim) - forgetfulness; च (ca) - and; वधस्य (vadhyasya) - of the condemned (person to be slain); वै (vai) - indeed; पापेन (pāpena) - with sin; तेन (tena) - by that; च (ca) - and; अस्पर्शम् (asparśam) - not touching; भ्रातॄणाम् (bhrātṝṇām) - of the brothers; प्रकृतिम् (prakṛtim) - nature; तथा (tathā) - likewise;]
(He chose his mother’s rising up, forgetfulness, and indeed, of the condemned, with sin, by that, and non-contact with the brothers’ nature likewise.)
He chose his mother's revival, forgetfulness, indeed the status of the condemned, impurity by that act, not associating with the brothers, and likewise their nature. (03-116-17)
अप्रतिद्वन्द्वतां युद्धे दीर्घमायुश्च भारत। ददौ च सर्वान्कामांस्ताञ्जमदग्निर्महातपाः ॥०३-११६-१८॥
apratidvandvatāṃ yuddhe dīrgham āyuś ca bhārata। dadau ca sarvān kāmāṃs tāñ jamadagnir mahātapāḥ ॥03-116-18॥
[अप्रतिद्वन्द्वतां (apratidvandvatām) - opposed-by-none-state; युद्धे (yuddhe) - in battle; दीर्घम् (dīrgham) - long; आयुः (āyuḥ) - life; च (ca) - and; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; ददौ (dadau) - gave; च (ca) - and; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; कामान् (kāmān) - desires; तान् (tān) - those; जमदग्निः (jamad-agniḥ) - Jamadagni (son); महातपाः (mahātapāḥ) - of great austerity;]
(A state of being opposed by none in battle, long life, and, O Bhārata, gave and all desires—those Jamadagni (the son) of great austerity.)
Jamadagni's son, of great austerity, granted you, O Bhārata, freedom from opposition in battle, long life, and all those desired things. (03-116-18)
कदाचित्तु तथैवास्य विनिष्क्रान्ताः सुताः प्रभो। अथानूपपतिर्वीरः कार्तवीर्योऽभ्यवर्तत ॥०३-११६-१९॥
kadācittu tathaivāsya viniṣkrāntāḥ sutāḥ prabho। athānūpapatirvīraḥ kārtavīryo’bhyavartata ॥03-116-19॥
[कदाचित् (kadācit) - once; sometime; तु (tu) - but; तथैव (tathaiva) - just so; in the same way; अस्य (asya) - of him; his; विनिष्क्रान्ताः (viniṣkrāntāḥ) - having departed; gone out; सुताः (sutāḥ) - sons; प्रभो (prabho) - O lord; अथ (atha) - then; अनूपपति: (anūpapatiḥ) - the lord of the marsh lands; वीरः (vīraḥ) - hero; courageous one; कार्तवीर्यः (kārtavīryaḥ) - Kārtavīrya (proper name); अभ्यवर्तत (abhyavartata) - approached; came near;]
(Once, but just so, his sons having gone out, O lord, then the lord of the marsh lands, the hero Kārtavīrya approached.)
Once, O lord, at a time when his sons had gone out, then the heroic Kārtavīrya, the lord of the marsh lands, arrived. (03-116-19)
तमाश्रमपदं प्राप्तमृषेर्भार्या समर्चयत्। स युद्धमदसंमत्तो नाभ्यनन्दत्तथार्चनम् ॥०३-११६-२०॥
tam āśramapadaṃ prāptam ṛṣer bhāryā samarcayat। sa yuddhamadasammatto nābhyanandat tathārcanam ॥03-116-20॥
[तम् (tam) - him; आश्रमपदं (āśramapadam) - hermitage abode; प्राप्तम् (prāptam) - having arrived; ऋषेः (ṛṣeḥ) - of the sage; भार्या (bhāryā) - wife; समर्चयत् (samarcayat) - honoured; सः (saḥ) - he; युद्धमदसंमत्तः (yuddhamadasammattaḥ) - intoxicated by the pride of battle; न (na) - not; अभ्यनन्दत् (abhyanandat) - welcomed; तथा (tathā) - thus; अर्चनम् (arcanam) - homage;]
(Him, having arrived at the hermitage abode, the sage's wife honoured; he, intoxicated by the pride of battle, did not welcome thus (her) homage.)
When he arrived at the hermitage, the sage's wife honoured him; but, intoxicated with the pride of battle, he did not welcome her homage. (03-116-20)
प्रमथ्य चाश्रमात्तस्माद्धोमधेन्वास्तदा बलात्। जहार वत्सं क्रोशन्त्या बभञ्ज च महाद्रुमान् ॥०३-११६-२१॥
pramathya cāśramāttasmāddhomadhenvāstadā balāt। jahāra vatsaṃ krośantyā babhañja ca mahādrumā n ॥03-116-21॥
[प्रमथ्य (pramathya) - having crushed; च (ca) - and; आश्रमात् (āśramāt) - from the hermitage; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - from that; होमधेन्वाः (homadhenvāḥ) - sacrificial cows; तदा (tadā) - then; बलात् (balāt) - by force; जहार (jahāra) - he took away; वत्सं (vatsaṃ) - the calf; क्रोशन्त्या (krośantyā) - crying; बभञ्ज (babhañja) - he broke; च (ca) - and; महाद्रुमान् (mahādrumān) - huge trees;]
(Having crushed and from that hermitage the sacrificial cows then by force, he took away the calf of the crying (cow), and he also broke huge trees.)
He forcefully drove away the sacrificial cows from that hermitage, seized the crying cow’s calf, and broke down huge trees. (03-116-21)
आगताय च रामाय तदाचष्ट पिता स्वयम्। गां च रोरूयतीं दृष्ट्वा कोपो रामं समाविशत् ॥०३-११६-२२॥
āgatāya ca rāmāya tadā ācaṣṭa pitā svayam। gāṃ ca rorūyatīṃ dṛṣṭvā kopo rāmaṃ samāviśat॥03-116-22॥
[आगताय (āgatāya) - having arrived (to); च (ca) - and; रामाय (rāmāya) - to Rāma; तदा (tadā) - then; आचष्ट (ācaṣṭa) - told; पिता (pitā) - the father; स्वयम् (svayam) - himself; गाम् (gām) - the cow; च (ca) - and; रोरूयतीम् (rorūyatīm) - crying (weeping); दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; कोपः (kopaḥ) - anger; रामम् (rāmam) - Rāma; समाविशत् (samāviśat) - entered;]
(And when Rāma had arrived, the father himself then told (him). And having seen the cow crying, anger entered Rāma.)
When Rāma arrived, the father himself then spoke to him. On seeing the cow weeping, anger arose within Rāma. (03-116-22)
स मन्युवशमापन्नः कार्तवीर्यमुपाद्रवत्। तस्याथ युधि विक्रम्य भार्गवः परवीरहा ॥०३-११६-२३॥
sa manyuvaśam-āpannaḥ kārtavīryam-upādravat। tasya atha yudhi vikramya bhārgavaḥ paravīra-hā ॥03-116-23॥
[स (sa) - he; मन्युवशमापन्नः (manyuvaśam-āpannaḥ) - having fallen under the control of anger; कार्तवीर्यम् (kārtavīryam) - Kārtavīrya (proper noun; accusative singular); उपाद्रवत् (upādravat) - attacked; तस्य (tasya) - his; अथ (atha) - then; युधि (yudhi) - in battle; विक्रम्य (vikramya) - having advanced; भार्गवः (bhārgavaḥ) - Bhārgava (descendant of Bhṛgu; i.e., Paraśurāma); परवीरहा (paravīra-hā) - destroyer of enemy heroes;]
(He, having come under the power of anger, attacked Kārtavīrya. Then, in battle, having advanced, Bhārgava, the destroyer of enemy heroes.)
He, overcome by anger, attacked Kārtavīrya. Then Bhārgava, the destroyer of enemy heroes, advanced in battle. (03-116-23)
चिच्छेद निशितैर्भल्लैर्बाहून्परिघसंनिभान्। सहस्रसंमितान्राजन्प्रगृह्य रुचिरं धनुः ॥०३-११६-२४॥
ciccheda niśitairbhallairbāhūnparighasaṁnibhān। sahasrasaṁmitān rājan pragṛhya ruciraṁ dhanuḥ ॥03-116-24॥
[चिच्छेद (ciccheda) - he cut off; निशितैः (niśitaiḥ) - with sharp; भल्लैः (bhallaiḥ) - arrows; बाहून् (bāhūn) - arms; परिघसंनिभान् (parighasaṁnibhān) - resembling iron clubs; सहस्रसंमितान् (sahasrasaṁmitān) - measured in thousands; राजन् (rājan) - O king; प्रगृह्य (pragṛhya) - having taken up; रुचिरं (ruciraṁ) - splendid; धनुः (dhanuḥ) - bow;]
(He cut off with sharp arrows the arms resembling iron clubs, measured in thousands, O king, having taken up a splendid bow.)
O king, having taken up his splendid bow, he cut off, with sharp arrows, the thousands of arms that resembled iron clubs. (03-116-24)
अर्जुनस्याथ दायादा रामेण कृतमन्यवः। आश्रमस्थं विना रामं जमदग्निमुपाद्रवन् ॥०३-११६-२५॥
arjunasya ātha dāyādā rāmeṇa kṛtaman-yavaḥ। āśrama-sthaṃ vinā rāmaṃ jamadagnim upādravan ॥03-116-25॥
[अर्जुनस्य (arjunasya) - of Arjuna; अथ (atha) - then; दायादाः (dāyādāḥ) - descendants; heirs; रामेण (rāmeṇa) - by Rāma; कृतमन्यवः (kṛta-manyavaḥ) - having aroused anger; having become angry; आश्रमस्थं (āśrama-stham) - residing in the hermitage; विना (vinā) - without; रामं (rāmaṃ) - Rāma; जमदग्निम् (jamadagnim) - Jamadagni; उपाद्रवन् (upādravan) - attacked; assailed;]
(Of Arjuna then, the descendants, having had their anger roused by Rāma, the hermitage-dweller, without Rāma, approached Jamadagni.)
Then, the descendants of Arjuna, whose anger had been kindled by Rāma, assailed Jamadagni in his hermitage when Rāma was not there. (03-116-25)
ते तं जघ्नुर्महावीर्यमयुध्यन्तं तपस्विनम्। असकृद्राम रामेति विक्रोशन्तमनाथवत् ॥०३-११६-२६॥
te taṃ jaghnur mahā-vīryam ayudhyantam tapasvinam। asakṛd rāma rāmeti vikrośantam anātha-vat॥03-116-26॥
[ते (te) - they; तं (taṃ) - him; जघ्नु: (jaghnur) - killed; महावीर्यम् (mahā-vīryam) - of great strength; अयुध्यन्तम् (ayudhyantam) - fighting; तपस्विनम् (tapasvinam) - ascetic; असकृत् (asakṛt) - repeatedly; राम (rāma) - Rama; रामेति (rāmeti) - ‘O Rama’; विक्रोशन्तम् (vikrośantam) - crying out loudly; अनाथवत् (anātha-vat) - like one without protection;]
(They killed him, of great strength, fighting, ascetic, repeatedly shouting 'Rama, Rama', crying out loudly like one without protection.)
They killed that ascetic of great strength as he fought, repeatedly shouting 'Rama, Rama', crying out loudly like one who has no protector. (03-116-26)
कार्तवीर्यस्य पुत्रास्तु जमदग्निं युधिष्ठिर। घातयित्वा शरैर्जग्मुर्यथागतमरिंदमाः ॥०३-११६-२७॥
kārtavīryasya putrās tu jamadagniṃ yudhiṣṭhira। ghātayitvā śarair jagmur yathāgatam ariṃdamāḥ ॥03-116-27॥
[कार्तवीर्यस्य (kārtavīryasya) - of Kārtavīrya; पुत्राः (putrāḥ) - sons; तु (tu) - but; जमदग्निम् (jamadamgnim) - Jamadagni; युधिष्ठिर (yudhiṣṭhira) - O Yudhiṣṭhira; घातयित्वा (ghātayitvā) - having slain; शरैः (śaraiḥ) - with arrows; जग्मुः (jagmuḥ) - they went; यथागतम् (yathāgatam) - as they had come; अरिंदमाः (ariṃdamāḥ) - destroyers of foes;]
(Of Kārtavīrya the sons but Jamadagni, O Yudhiṣṭhira, having slain with arrows, they went as they had come, destroyers of foes.)
O Yudhiṣṭhira, the sons of Kārtavīrya, destroyers of foes, having slain Jamadagni with arrows, went back as they had come. (03-116-27)
अपक्रान्तेषु चैतेषु जमदग्नौ तथागते। समित्पाणिरुपागच्छदाश्रमं भृगुनन्दनः ॥०३-११६-२८॥
apakrānteṣu caiteṣu jamadaghnau tathāgate. samit-pāṇir upāgacchad āśramaṃ bhṛgu-nandanaḥ ॥03-116-28॥
[अपक्रान्तेषु (apakrānteṣu) - having departed; (locative plural); च (ca) - and; एतेषु (eteṣu) - these; (locative plural); जमदग्नौ (jamadaghnau) - Jamadagni; (locative singular); तथागते (tathāgate) - thus having come; (locative singular); समित्पाणिः (samit-pāṇiḥ) - with fuel in hand; उपागच्छत् (upāgacchat) - approached; आश्रमं (āśramam) - hermitage; (accusative singular); भृगुनन्दनः (bhṛgu-nandanaḥ) - son of Bhṛgu;]
(Having departed and when these (persons) and Jamadagni had thus arrived, the son of Bhṛgu, with fuel in hand, approached the hermitage.)
When these had departed, and Jamadagni also had thus arrived, the son of Bhṛgu, carrying fuel in his hand, approached the hermitage. (03-116-28)
स दृष्ट्वा पितरं वीरस्तथा मृत्युवशं गतम्। अनर्हन्तं तथाभूतं विललाप सुदुःखितः ॥०३-११६-२९॥
sa dṛṣṭvā pitaraṃ vīras tathā mṛtyuvaśaṃ gatam। anarhantam tathābhūtaṃ vilalāpa suduḥkhitaḥ ॥03-116-29॥
[स (sa) - he; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; पितरं (pitaraṃ) - father (accusative singular); वीरः (vīraḥ) - the hero; तथा (tathā) - thus; मृत्युवशं (mṛtyuvaśam) - under the power of death; गतं (gatam) - gone; अनर्हन्तं (anarhantam) - unworthy (of that situation); तथाभूतं (tathābhūtaṃ) - being so/in such a state; विललाप (vilalāpa) - lamented; सुदुःखितः (suduḥkhitaḥ) - very distressed;]
(He, having seen (his) father, the hero, thus gone under the power of death, unworthy and being so, lamented, very distressed.)
He, seeing his father—the hero—thus succumbed to death, unworthy of such a fate and in such a condition, lamented with great sorrow. (03-116-29)
