ममापराधात्तैः क्षुद्रैर्हतस्त्वं तात बालिशैः। कार्तवीर्यस्य दायादैर्वने मृग इवेषुभिः ॥०३-११७-१॥
mamāparādhāttaiḥ kṣudrairhatastvaṁ tāta bāliśaiḥ। kārtavīryasya dāyādairvane mṛga iveṣubhiḥ॥03-117-1॥
[मम (mama) - my; अपराधात् (aparādhāt) - from fault; तैः (taiḥ) - by those; क्षुद्रैः (kṣudraiḥ) - by lowly; हतः (hataḥ) - killed; त्वं (tvaṁ) - you; तात (tāta) - dear one; बालिशैः (bāliśaiḥ) - by childish; कार्तवीर्यस्य (kārtavīryasya) - of Kārtavīrya; दायादैः (dāyādaiḥ) - by heirs; वने (vane) - in the forest; मृगः (mṛgaḥ) - deer; इव (iva) - like; इषुभिः (eṣubhiḥ) - by arrows;]
(From my fault, by those lowly childish (men), you, dear one, killed, by Kārtavīrya's heirs, in the forest, like a deer by arrows.)
Because of my fault, you, dear one, have been killed by those lowly, childish heirs of Kārtavīrya in the forest, just as a deer is killed by arrows. (03-117-1)
धर्मज्ञस्य कथं तात वर्तमानस्य सत्पथे। मृत्युरेवंविधो युक्तः सर्वभूतेष्वनागसः ॥०३-११७-२॥
dharmajñasya kathaṁ tāta vartamānasya satpathe। mṛtyurevaṁ-vidho yuktaḥ sarva-bhūteṣu anāgasaḥ॥03-117-2॥
[धर्मज्ञस्य (dharmajñasya) - of the knower of dharma; कथं (kathaṁ) - how; तात (tāta) - O dear (father); वर्तमानस्य (vartamānasya) - of the one abiding; सत्पथे (satpathe) - on the righteous path; मृत्युः (mṛtyuḥ) - death; एवंविधः (evaṁ-vidhaḥ) - such as this; युक्तः (yuktaḥ) - is joined (has occurred); सर्वभूतेषु (sarva-bhūteṣu) - among all beings; अनागसः (anāgasaḥ) - to the faultless one;]
(Of the knower of dharma, how, O dear, to the one abiding on the righteous path, death such as this is joined among all beings to the faultless one?)
O dear, how has such a death come among all beings to one who knows dharma, abides in the path of righteousness, and is faultless? (03-117-2)
किं नु तैर्न कृतं पापं यैर्भवांस्तपसि स्थितः। अयुध्यमानो वृद्धः सन्हतः शरशतैः शितैः ॥०३-११७-३॥
kiṁ nu tair na kṛtaṁ pāpaṁ yair bhavāṁs tapasi sthitaḥ। ayudhyamāno vṛddhaḥ san hataḥ śaraśataiḥ śitaiḥ॥03-117-3॥
[किं (kiṁ) - what; नु (nu) - indeed; तैः (tair) - by those; न (na) - not; कृतं (kṛtaṁ) - done; पापं (pāpaṁ) - wrong; यैः (yair) - by whom; भवाञ् (bhavāṁs) - you; तपसि (tapasi) - in austerity; स्थितः (sthitaḥ) - being fixed; अयुध्यमानः (ayudhyamānaḥ) - not fighting; वृद्धः (vṛddhaḥ) - old; सन् (san) - being; हतः (hataḥ) - killed; शरशतैः (śaraśataiḥ) - by hundreds of arrows; शितैः (śitaiḥ) - sharp;]
(What indeed by those not done wrong by whom you, in austerity being fixed, not fighting, being old, killed by hundreds of sharp arrows.)
What wrong was not committed by those by whom you, while engaged in austerity, being old and not fighting, were killed by hundreds of sharp arrows? (03-117-3)
किं नु ते तत्र वक्ष्यन्ति सचिवेषु सुहृत्सु च। अयुध्यमानं धर्मज्ञमेकं हत्वानपत्रपाः ॥०३-११७-४॥
kiṁ nu te tatra vakṣyanti saciveṣu suhṛtsu ca। ayudhyamānaṁ dharma-jñam ekaṁ hatvā anapatrapāḥ ॥03-117-4॥
[किं (kiṁ) - what; नु (nu) - indeed; ते (te) - they; तत्र (tatra) - there; वक्ष्यन्ति (vakṣyanti) - will say; सचिवेषु (saciveṣu) - among counselors; सुहृत्सु (suhṛtsu) - among friends; च (ca) - and; अयुध्यमानं (ayudhyamānam) - not fighting; धर्मज्ञम् (dharma-jñam) - one who knows dharma; एकं (ekaṁ) - alone; हत्वा (hatvā) - having killed; अनपत्रपाः (anapatrapāḥ) - shameless ones;]
(What indeed they there will say among counselors, among friends and, having killed one not fighting, who knows dharma, alone, the shameless ones.)
What indeed will they say there among counselors and friends, having killed a single unarmed and righteous person without shame? (03-117-4)
अकृतव्रण उवाच॥

vilapyaivaṃ sa karuṇaṃ bahu nānāvidhaṃ nṛpa। pretakāryāṇi sarvāṇi pituś cakre mahātapāḥ ॥03-117-5॥
[विलप्य (vilapya) - having lamented; एवम् (evam) - thus; सः (saḥ) - he; करुणं (karuṇam) - piteously; बहु (bahu) - much; नानाविधं (nānāvidham) - of various kinds; नृप (nṛpa) - O king; प्रेतकार्याणि (pretakāryāṇi) - funeral rites; सर्वाणि (sarvāṇi) - all; पितुः (pituḥ) - of (his) father; चक्रे (cakre) - performed; महातपाः (mahātapāḥ) - the great ascetic;]
(Having lamented thus piteously much of various kinds, O king, all funeral rites of (his) father the great ascetic performed.)
O king, having thus lamented greatly and piteously in many ways, the great ascetic performed all the funeral rites for his father. (03-117-5)
ददाह पितरं चाग्नौ रामः परपुरञ्जयः। प्रतिजज्ञे वधं चापि सर्वक्षत्रस्य भारत ॥०३-११७-६॥
dadāha pitaraṃ cāgnau rāmaḥ parapurañjayaḥ। pratijajñe vadhaṃ cāpi sarvakṣatrasya bhārata॥03-117-6॥
[ददाह (dadāha) - burned; पितरं (pitaraṃ) - father; च (ca) - and; अग्नौ (agnau) - in fire; रामः (rāmaḥ) - Rama; परपुरञ्जयः (parapurañjayaḥ) - conqueror of enemy cities; प्रतिजज्ञे (pratijajñe) - vowed; वधं (vadhaṃ) - slaughter; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; सर्वक्षत्रस्य (sarvakṣatrasya) - of all the warriors; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(Burned father and in fire Rama the conqueror of enemy cities. He vowed slaughter also of all the warriors, O Bhārata.)
Rama, the conqueror of enemy cities, burned his father in the fire and also vowed to slay all the warriors, O Bhārata. (03-117-6)
सङ्क्रुद्धोऽतिबलः शूरः शस्त्रमादाय वीर्यवान्। जघ्निवान्कार्तवीर्यस्य सुतानेकोऽन्तकोपमः ॥०३-११७-७॥
saṅkruddho'tibalaḥ śūraḥ śastram ādāya vīryavān। jaghnivān kārtavīryasya sutān eko'ntakopamaḥ ॥03-117-7॥
[सङ्क्रुद्धः (saṅkruddhaḥ) - very enraged; अतिबलः (atibalaḥ) - exceedingly strong; शूरः (śūraḥ) - valiant; शस्त्रम् (śastram) - weapon; आदाय (ādāya) - having taken; वीर्यवान् (vīryavān) - mighty; जघ्निवान् (jaghnivān) - he slew; कार्तवीर्यस्य (kārtavīryasya) - of Kārtavīrya; सुतान् (sutān) - sons; एकः (ekaḥ) - alone; अन्तक-उपमः (antaka-upamaḥ) - like Yama (death personified);]
(Very enraged, exceedingly strong, valiant, having taken weapon, mighty, he slew the sons of Kārtavīrya, alone, like Yama.)
Very enraged, exceedingly strong and valiant, taking up his weapon, that mighty one alone slew the sons of Kārtavīrya, like Yama himself. (03-117-7)
तेषां चानुगता ये च क्षत्रियाः क्षत्रियर्षभ। तांश्च सर्वानवामृद्नाद्रामः प्रहरतां वरः ॥०३-११७-८॥
teṣāṃ cānugatā ye ca kṣatriyāḥ kṣatriyarṣabha। tāṃś ca sarvān avāmṛdnād rāmaḥ praharatāṃ varaḥ॥03-117-8॥
[तेषां (teṣāṃ) - of them; च (ca) - and; अनुगताः (anugatāḥ) - followers; ये (ye) - who; च (ca) - and; क्षत्रियाः (kṣatriyāḥ) - kṣatriyas; क्षत्रियर्षभ (kṣatriyarṣabha) - O best of kṣatriyas; तान् (tān) - them; च (ca) - and; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; अवामृद्नात् (avāmṛdnāt) - crushed; रामः (rāmaḥ) - Rāma; प्रहरतां (praharatām) - of the mighty warriors; वरः (varaḥ) - best;]
(O best of kṣatriyas, Rāma, the best among mighty warriors, crushed all those kṣatriyas and the followers of them.)
O best of kṣatriyas, Rāma, the foremost among warriors, crushed all those kṣatriyas and their followers. (03-117-8)
त्रिःसप्तकृत्वः पृथिवीं कृत्वा निःक्षत्रियां प्रभुः। समन्तपञ्चके पञ्च चकार रुधिरह्रदान् ॥०३-११७-९॥
triḥsaptakṛtvaḥ pṛthivīṃ kṛtvā niḥkṣatriyāṃ prabhuḥ। samantapañcake pañca cakāra rudhirahradān ॥03-117-9॥
[त्रिःसप्तकृत्वः (triḥ-sapta-kṛtvaḥ) - three-times-seven times; (i.e., twenty-one times); पृथिवीं (pṛthivīm) - the earth (accusative singular); कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having made; निःक्षत्रियां (niḥ-kṣatriyām) - bereft of kṣatriyas; (without warriors); प्रभुः (prabhuḥ) - the lord; (he; the powerful one); समन्तपञ्चके (samanta-pañcake) - at Samantapañcaka; (name of the place); पञ्च (pañca) - five; चकार (cakāra) - he made; रुधिरह्रदान् (rudhira-hradān) - bloody lakes; (lakes of blood);]
(Three-times-seven times the earth having made bereft of kṣatriyas, the lord at Samantapañcaka five made lakes of blood.)
Having made the earth bereft of kṣatriyas twenty-one times, the lord created five lakes of blood at Samantapañcaka. (03-117-9)
स तेषु तर्पयामास पितॄन्भृगुकुलोद्वहः। साक्षाद्ददर्श चर्चीकं स च रामं न्यवारयत् ॥०३-११७-१०॥
sa teṣu tarpayāmāsa pitṝn bhṛgukulodvahaḥ. sākṣād dadarśa carcīkaṃ sa ca rāmaṃ nyavārayat ॥03-117-10॥
[स (sa) - he; तेषु (teṣu) - among them; तर्पयामास (tarpayāmāsa) - he satisfied; पितॄन् (pitṝn) - ancestors; भृगुकुलोद्वहः (bhṛgukulodvahaḥ) - the best of the Bhṛgu lineage; साक्षात् (sākṣāt) - directly; ददर्श (dadarśa) - he saw; चर्चीकं (carcīkaṃ) - Carcīka (proper noun); स (sa) - he; च (ca) - and; रामं (rāmaṃ) - Rāma; न्यवारयत् (nyavārayat) - he restrained;]
(He among them satisfied the ancestors, the best of the Bhṛgu lineage. Directly he saw Carcīka, and he restrained Rāma.)
He, the foremost of the Bhṛgu lineage, satisfied the ancestors among them. He directly saw Carcīka, and he restrained Rāma. (03-117-10)
ततो यज्ञेन महता जामदग्न्यः प्रतापवान्। तर्पयामास देवेन्द्रमृत्विग्भ्यश्च महीं ददौ ॥०३-११७-११॥
tato yajñena mahatā jāmadagnyaḥ pratāpavān। tarpayām āsa devendram ṛtvigbhyaś ca mahīṃ dadau॥03-117-11॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - thereafter; यज्ञेन (yajñena) - by sacrifice; महता (mahatā) - great; जामदग्न्यः (jāmadagnyaḥ) - the son of Jamadagni; प्रतापवान् (pratāpavān) - mighty; powerful; तर्पयाम् (tarpayām) - he satisfied; आस (āsa) - he did; देवेन्द्रम् (devendram) - Indra, the king of the gods; ऋत्विग्भ्यः (ṛtvigbhyaḥ) - to the priests; च (ca) - and; महीं (mahīṃ) - the earth; ददौ (dadau) - he gave;]
(Thereafter, by a great sacrifice, the mighty son of Jamadagni satisfied Indra; and to the priests, he gave the earth.)
Thereafter, the powerful Jamadagnya, through a great sacrifice, satisfied Indra and gave the earth to the priests. (03-117-11)
वेदीं चाप्यददद्धैमीं कश्यपाय महात्मने। दशव्यामायतां कृत्वा नवोत्सेधां विशां पते ॥०३-११७-१२॥
vedīṃ cāpyadadaddhaimīṃ kaśyapāya mahātmane. daśavyāmāyatāṃ kṛtvā navotsedhāṃ viśāṃ pate ॥03-117-12॥
[वेदीं (vedīṃ) - altar; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; अददत् (adadat) - gave; हैमीं (haimīṃ) - made of gold; कश्यपाय (kaśyapāya) - to Kaśyapa; महात्मने (mahātmane) - to the great-souled; दश (daśa) - ten; व्यामायतां (vyāmāyatāṃ) - spans in length; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having made; नव (nava) - nine; उत्सेधां (utsedhāṃ) - in height; विशां (viśāṃ) - O lord of men; पते (pate) - O ruler;]
(Altar and also gave made of gold to Kaśyapa to the great-souled; ten spans in length having made, nine in height, O lord of men.)
He also gave to the great-souled Kaśyapa a golden altar, making it ten spans in length and nine in height, O ruler of men. (03-117-12)
तां कश्यपस्यानुमते ब्राह्मणाः खण्डशस्तदा। व्यभजंस्तेन ते राजन्प्रख्याताः खाण्डवायनाः ॥०३-११७-१३॥
tāṃ kaśyapasyānumate brāhmaṇāḥ khaṇḍaśas tadā। vyabhajan tena te rājan prakhyātāḥ khāṇḍavāyanāḥ ॥03-117-13॥
[तां (tāṃ) - her; (referring to: that, the land); कश्यपस्य (kaśyapasya) - of Kaśyapa; (genitive); अनुमते (anumate) - with consent; by permission; ब्राह्मणाः (brāhmaṇāḥ) - Brāhmaṇas; priests; खण्डशः (khaṇḍaśaḥ) - in portions; piece by piece; तदा (tadā) - then; at that time; व्यभजन् (vyabhajan) - they divided; (from root bhaj, vi+abhajan); तेन (tena) - thereby; by that; ते (te) - they; राजन् (rājan) - O king; प्रख्याताः (prakhyātāḥ) - renowned; famous; खाण्डवायनाः (khāṇḍavāyanāḥ) - Khāṇḍavāyanas; (descendants of Khāṇḍava or related to the Khāṇḍava region);]
(Her, with Kaśyapa's consent, Brāhmaṇas in portions then divided; thereby they, O king, renowned (as) Khāṇḍavāyanas.)
With Kaśyapa's consent, the Brāhmaṇas then divided her into portions; because of this, O king, they became renowned as the Khāṇḍavāyanas. (03-117-13)
स प्रदाय महीं तस्मै कश्यपाय महात्मने। अस्मिन्महेन्द्रे शैलेन्द्रे वसत्यमितविक्रमः ॥०३-११७-१४॥
sa pradāya mahīṃ tasmai kaśyapāya mahātmane। asmin mahendre śailendre vasaty amitavikramaḥ ॥03-117-14॥
[स (sa) - he; प्रदाय (pradāya) - having given; महीं (mahīṃ) - the earth; तस्मै (tasmai) - to him; कश्यपाय (kaśyapāya) - to Kaśyapa; महात्मने (mahātmane) - to the great-souled; अस्मिन् (asmin) - in this; महेन्द्रे (mahendre) - (Mount) Mahendra; शैलेन्द्रे (śailendre) - lord of mountains; वसति (vasati) - dwells; अमितविक्रमः (amitavikramaḥ) - one of immeasurable prowess;]
(He, having given the earth to him, to Kaśyapa, the great-souled, in this (Mount) Mahendra, lord of mountains, dwells the one of immeasurable prowess.)
Having given the earth to Kaśyapa, the great-souled, he of immeasurable prowess dwells here on Mount Mahendra, the lord of mountains. (03-117-14)
एवं वैरमभूत्तस्य क्षत्रियैर्लोकवासिभिः। पृथिवी चापि विजिता रामेणामिततेजसा ॥०३-११७-१५॥
evaṁ vairam abhūt tasya kṣatriyaiḥ lokavāsibhiḥ। pṛthivī cāpi vijitā rāmeṇa amita-tejasā॥03-117-15॥
[एवं (evaṁ) - thus; वैरम् (vairam) - enmity; अभूत् (abhūt) - arose; तस्य (tasya) - of him; क्षत्रियैः (kṣatriyaiḥ) - by the kṣatriyas; लोकवासिभिः (lokavāsibhiḥ) - by the inhabitants of the world; पृथिवी (pṛthivī) - the earth; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; विजिता (vijitā) - was conquered; रामेण (rāmeṇa) - by Rāma; अमिततेजसा (amita-tejasā) - of immeasurable splendor;]
(Thus enmity arose of him by the kṣatriyas, by the inhabitants of the world; the earth also was conquered by Rāma of immeasurable splendor.)
Thus enmity arose for him among the kṣatriyas and the inhabitants of the world, and the earth was also conquered by Rāma of immeasurable splendor. (03-117-15)
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥
vaiśampāyana uvāca॥
[वैशम्पायन (vaiśampāyana) - Vaiśampāyana; (proper noun, the sage); उवाच (uvāca) - said;]

Vaiśampāyana said.
ततश्चतुर्दशीं रामः समयेन महामनाः। दर्शयामास तान्विप्रान्धर्मराजं च सानुजम् ॥०३-११७-१६॥
tataḥ caturdaśīm rāmaḥ samayena mahāmanāḥ। darśayāmāsa tān viprān dharmarājaṃ ca sānujam॥03-117-16॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; चतुर्दशीम् (caturdaśīm) - the fourteenth (day); रामः (rāmaḥ) - Rāma; समयेन (samayena) - at the appointed time; महामनाः (mahāmanāḥ) - great-minded; दर्शयामास (darśayāmāsa) - showed; तान् (tān) - those; विप्रान् (viprān) - brāhmaṇas; धर्मराजम् (dharmarājam) - Dharmarāja; च (ca) - and; सानुजम् (sānujam) - with his younger brother;]
(Then the great-minded Rāma, at the appointed time, showed (the rites) on the fourteenth (day) to those brāhmaṇas and to Dharmarāja together with his younger brother.)
Then, on the fourteenth day, the great-minded Rāma, at the proper time, showed (the rites) to those brāhmaṇas and to Dharmarāja along with his brother. (03-117-16)
स तमानर्च राजेन्द्रो भ्रातृभिः सहितः प्रभुः। द्विजानां च परां पूजां चक्रे नृपतिसत्तमः ॥०३-११७-१७॥
sa tam ānarca rājendraḥ bhrātṛbhiḥ sahitaḥ prabhuḥ। dvijānāṃ ca parāṃ pūjāṃ cakre nṛpatisattamaḥ ॥03-117-17॥
[स (sa) - he; तम् (tam) - him; अनर्च (ānarca) - worshipped; राजेन्द्रः (rājendraḥ) - king among kings; भ्रातृभिः (bhrātṛbhiḥ) - with brothers; सहितः (sahitaḥ) - accompanied; प्रभुः (prabhuḥ) - the lord; द्विजानाम् (dvijānām) - of the twice-born; च (ca) - and; पराम् (parām) - supreme; पूजाम् (pūjām) - worship; चक्रे (cakre) - performed; नृपतिसत्तमः (nṛpatisattamaḥ) - the best of kings;]
(He him worshipped, king among kings, with brothers accompanied, the lord. Of the twice-born and supreme worship performed, the best of kings.)
He, the king of kings and lord, accompanied by his brothers, worshipped him. The illustrious king also performed supreme worship for the twice-born. (03-117-17)
अर्चयित्वा जामदग्न्यं पूजितस्तेन चाभिभूः। महेन्द्र उष्य तां रात्रिं प्रययौ दक्षिणामुखः ॥०३-११७-१८॥
arcayitvā jāmadagnyaṃ pūjitastena cābhibhūḥ। mahendra uṣya tāṃ rātriṃ prayayau dakṣiṇāmukhaḥ॥03-117-18॥
[अर्चयित्वा (arcayitvā) - having worshipped; जामदग्न्यम् (jāmadagnyam) - Jāmadagnya (Parashurāma); पूजितः (pūjitaḥ) - (he) was honored; तेन (tena) - by him; च (ca) - and; अभिभूः (abhibhūḥ) - having been welcomed; महेन्द्रः (mahendraḥ) - Mahendra (Indra); उष्य (uṣya) - having stayed; ताम् (tām) - that; रात्रिम् (rātrim) - night; प्रययौ (prayayau) - departed; दक्षिणामुखः (dakṣiṇāmukhaḥ) - facing south;]
(Having worshipped Jāmadagnya, having been honored by him and welcomed, Mahendra, having stayed that night, departed facing south.)
After worshipping Jāmadagnya and being honored and welcomed by him, Mahendra spent that night there and then departed facing south. (03-117-18)
