प्रतिभास्यन्ति वै वेदा मम तातस्य चोभयोः। अति चान्यान्भविष्यावो वरा लब्धास्तथा मया ॥०३-१३६-१॥
pratibhāsyanti vai vedā mama tātasya cobhayoḥ। ati cānyānbhaviṣyāvo varā labdhāstathā mayā॥03-136-1॥
[प्रतिभास्यन्ति (pratibhāsyanti) - will shine forth; will be manifested; वै (vai) - indeed; verily; वेदा (vedāḥ) - Vedas; मम (mama) - of me; my; तातस्य (tātasya) - of father; च (ca) - and; उभयोः (ubhayoḥ) - of both; अति (ati) - beyond; surpassing; च (ca) - and; अन्यान् (anyān) - others; other ones; भविष्यावः (bhaviṣyāvau) - the two will be in the future; वरा (varāḥ) - boons; लब्धाः (labdhāḥ) - obtained; acquired; तथा (tathā) - thus; in this way; मया (mayā) - by me;]
(Will shine forth indeed the Vedas of me and of father, of both; beyond also others, the two will be in the future boons obtained thus by me.)
The Vedas of both myself and my father will indeed shine forth; furthermore, surpassing even others, the two future boons have thus been obtained by me. (03-136-1)

दर्पस्ते भविता तात वराँल्लब्ध्वा यथेप्सितान्। स दर्पपूर्णः कृपणः क्षिप्रमेव विनश्यसि ॥०३-१३६-२॥
darpaḥ te bhavitā tāta varāñ labdhvā yath-epsitān। saḥ darpa-pūrṇaḥ kṛpaṇaḥ kṣipram eva vinaśyasi ॥03-136-2॥
[दर्पः (darpaḥ) - arrogance; ते (te) - your; भविता (bhavitā) - will be; तात (tāta) - dear one; वरान् (varān) - boons; लब्ध्वा (labdhvā) - having obtained; यथ-इप्सितान् (yath-epsitān) - as desired; सः (saḥ) - that; दर्पपूर्णः (darpa-pūrṇaḥ) - full of arrogance; कृपणः (kṛpaṇaḥ) - wretched; क्षिप्रम् (kṣipram) - quickly; एव (eva) - indeed; विनश्यसि (vinaśyasi) - you perish;]
(Arrogance your will be, dear one, having obtained boons as desired. That full of arrogance, wretched, quickly indeed you perish. (03-136-2))
Dear one, arrogance will arise in you when you have obtained the boons as you desire. Being filled with arrogance, you, wretched one, will quickly perish. (03-136-2)
अत्राप्युदाहरन्तीमा गाथा देवैरुदाहृताः। ऋषिरासीत्पुरा पुत्र बालधिर्नाम वीर्यवान् ॥०३-१३६-३॥
atrāpy udāharantīmā gāthā devair udāhṛtāḥ। ṛṣir āsīt purā putra bāladhir nāma vīryavān ॥03-136-3॥

स पुत्रशोकादुद्विग्नस्तपस्तेपे सुदुश्चरम्। भवेन्मम सुतोऽमर्त्य इति तं लब्धवांश्च सः ॥०३-१३६-४॥
sa putraśokād udvignas tapas tepe suduścaram. bhaven mama suto'martya iti taṃ labdhavāṃś ca saḥ ॥03-136-4॥
[स (sa) - he; पुत्रशोकात् (putraśokāt) - from grief for his son; उद्विग्नः (udvignaḥ) - agitated; तपः (tapas) - austerity; तेपे (tepe) - performed; सुदुश्चरम् (suduścaram) - very difficult to undertake; भवेत् (bhavet) - might become; मम (mama) - my; सुतः (sutaḥ) - son; अमर्त्यः (amartyaḥ) - immortal; इति (iti) - thus; तम् (tam) - that; लब्धवान् (labdhavān) - obtained; च (ca) - and; सः (saḥ) - he;]
(He, from grief for his son, agitated, performed austerity very difficult to undertake. 'Might my son be immortal,' thus, that he obtained also he.)
He, agitated by the grief for his son, performed very difficult austerity. Wishing, 'May my son become immortal,' he obtained that as well. (03-136-4)
तस्य प्रसादो देवैश्च कृतो न त्वमरैः समः। नामर्त्यो विद्यते मर्त्यो निमित्तायुर्भविष्यति ॥०३-१३६-५॥
tasya prasādo devaiś ca kṛto na tv amaraiḥ samaḥ। nā-martyo vidyate martyo nimitta-āyur bhaviṣyati ॥03-136-5॥

(Of him, favor by the gods also is done; not, however, by immortals is he equal. Not immortal exists; the mortal with destined lifespan will be.)
His favor has been granted also by the gods; but he is not equal to the immortals. There exists no immortal—one who is mortal will be, for a destined length of life. (03-136-5)

यथेमे पर्वताः शश्वत्तिष्ठन्ति सुरसत्तमाः। अक्षयास्तन्निमित्तं मे सुतस्यायुर्भवेदिति ॥०३-१३६-६॥
yatheme parvatāḥ śaśvat tiṣṭhanti surasattamāḥ। akṣayās tannimittaṃ me sutasya āyuḥ bhavet iti ॥03-136-6॥

तस्य पुत्रस्तदा जज्ञे मेधावी क्रोधनः सदा। स तच्छ्रुत्वाकरोद्दर्पमृषींश्चैवावमन्यत ॥०३-१३६-७॥
tasya putras tadā jajñe medhāvī krodhanaḥ sadā। sa tac chrutvā akarod darpam ṛṣīṁś caiva avamanyata॥03-136-7॥
[तस्य (tasya) - of him; पुत्रः (putraḥ) - son; तदा (tadā) - then; जज्ञे (jajñe) - was born; मेधावी (medhāvī) - intelligent; क्रोधनः (krodhanaḥ) - irascible; सदा (sadā) - always; सः (saḥ) - he; तत् (tat) - that; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; अकरोत् (akarot) - did; दर्पम् (darpam) - pride; ऋषीन् (ṛṣīn) - the sages; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; अवमन्यत (avamanyata) - he despised;]
(Of him, a son then was born, intelligent, irascible, always. He, having heard that, did pride and indeed despised the sages.)
Then his son was born—intelligent, always prone to anger. Hearing that, he became proud and indeed showed contempt for the sages. (03-136-7)
विकुर्वाणो मुनीनां तु चरमाणो महीमिमाम्। आससाद महावीर्यं धनुषाक्षं मनीषिणम् ॥०३-१३६-८॥
vikurvāṇo munīnāṃ tu caramāṇo mahīmimām। āsasāda mahāvīryaṃ dhanuṣākṣaṃ manīṣiṇam॥03-136-8॥
[विकुर्वाणः (vikurvāṇaḥ) - doing various actions; मुनीनाम् (munīnāṃ) - of the sages; तु (tu) - but; चरमाणः (caramāṇaḥ) - moving; महीमिमाम् (mahīm imām) - this earth; आससाद (āsasāda) - approached; महावीर्यं (mahāvīryam) - of great strength; धनुषाक्षं (dhanuṣākṣam) - bearing a bow; मनीषिणम् (manīṣiṇam) - sage;]
(Doing various actions of the sages but, moving on this earth, (he) approached the one of great strength, the bow-bearing sage.)
While performing various acts of the sages and roaming over this earth, he approached the sage of great strength, who bore a bow. (03-136-8)
तस्यापचक्रे मेधावी तं शशाप स वीर्यवान्। भव भस्मेति चोक्तः स न भस्म समपद्यत ॥०३-१३६-९॥
tasyāpacakre medhāvī taṃ śaśāpa sa vīryavān। bhava bhasmeti coktaḥ sa na bhasma samapadyata ॥03-136-9॥
[तस्य (tasya) - his (genitive singular of saḥ); अपचक्रे (apacakre) - departed; went away; मेधावी (medhāvī) - the intelligent one; तं (taṃ) - him (accusative singular of saḥ); शशाप (śaśāpa) - cursed; स (sa) - he; वीर्यवान् (vīryavān) - the mighty one; भव (bhava) - be; भस्म (bhasma) - ashes; इति (iti) - thus; च (ca) - and; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - having been told; स (sa) - he; न (na) - not; भस्म (bhasma) - ash; समपद्यत (samapadyata) - became;]
(Of him departed the intelligent one; him cursed he, the mighty one. "Be ash" – thus having been told, he did not become ash.)
When he departed, the wise one, the mighty one cursed him. Even though he was told, "Become ashes," he did not turn into ash. (03-136-9)
धनुषाक्षस्तु तं दृष्ट्वा मेधाविनमनामयम्। निमित्तमस्य महिषैर्भेदयामास वीर्यवान् ॥०३-१३६-१०॥
dhanuṣākṣas tu taṁ dṛṣṭvā medhāvinam anāmayam। nimittam asya mahiṣair bhedayāmāsa vīryavān ॥03-136-10॥
[धनुषाक्षः (dhanuṣākṣaḥ) - the keeper of the bow; (the one whose eye/concern is the bow;) तु (tu) - but; तं (taṁ) - him; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; मेधाविनम् (medhāvinam) - the wise one; अनामयम् (anāmayam) - without trouble; निमित्तम् (nimittam) - cause; reason; अस्य (asya) - his; महिषैः (mahiṣaiḥ) - with buffaloes; भेदयामास (bhedayāmāsa) - caused to break apart; caused disturbance; वीर्यवान् (vīryavān) - the powerful one;]
(The keeper of the bow but having seen him, the wise one, without trouble, the cause of his, with buffaloes, caused disturbance, the powerful one.)
But the powerful keeper of the bow, having seen the wise and unharmed one, caused a disturbance for him with the buffaloes as a pretext. (03-136-10)
स निमित्ते विनष्टे तु ममार सहसा शिशुः। तं मृतं पुत्रमादाय विललाप ततः पिता ॥०३-१३६-११॥
sa nimitte vinaṣṭe tu mamāra sahasā śiśuḥ। taṃ mṛtaṃ putram ādāya vilalāpa tataḥ pitā ॥03-136-11॥
[स (sa) - he; निमित्ते (nimitte) - upon the cause; विनष्टे (vinaṣṭe) - having perished; तु (tu) - but; ममार (mamāra) - died; सहसा (sahasā) - suddenly; शिशुः (śiśuḥ) - the child; तं (taṃ) - him; मृतं (mṛtaṃ) - dead; पुत्रम् (putram) - son; आदाय (ādāya) - having taken; विललाप (vilalāpa) - lamented; ततः (tataḥ) - then; पिता (pitā) - the father;]
(He upon the cause having perished, but died suddenly the child. Him dead son having taken, lamented then the father.)
But when the cause was lost, the child suddenly died. Then the father, having taken his dead son, lamented. (03-136-11)
लालप्यमानं तं दृष्ट्वा मुनयः पुनरार्तवत्। ऊचुर्वेदोक्तया पूर्वं गाथया तन्निबोध मे ॥०३-१३६-१२॥
lālapyamānaṃ taṃ dṛṣṭvā munayaḥ punar ārtavat। ūcur vedoktayā pūrvaṃ gāthayā tan nibodha me ॥03-136-12॥
[लालप्यमानं (lālapyamānam) - being uttered; तं (taṃ) - him; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; मुनयः (munayaḥ) - the sages; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; आर्तवत् (ārtavat) - with distress; ऊचुः (ūcuḥ) - spoke; वेदोक्तया (vedoktayā) - by the Vedic statement; पूर्वं (pūrvam) - previously; गाथया (gāthayā) - by the verse; तत् (tat) - that; निबोध (nibodha) - know; मे (me) - from me;]
(Being uttered him having seen, the sages again with distress spoke by the Vedic statement previously by the verse; that know from me.)
Seeing him being uttered, the sages, again in distress, spoke as before by the verse taught in the Veda; know that from me. (03-136-12)
न दिष्टमर्थमत्येतुमीशो मर्त्यः कथञ्चन। महिषैर्भेदयामास धनुषाक्षो महीधरान् ॥०३-१३६-१३॥
na diṣṭamarthamatyetumīśo martyaḥ kathañcana। mahiṣairbhedayāmāsa dhanuṣākṣo mahīdharān ॥03-136-13॥
[न (na) - not; दिष्टमर्थम् (diṣṭam-artham) - that which is fated; destined; अत्येतुम् (atyetum) - to transgress; to go beyond; ईशः (īśaḥ) - able; capable; मर्त्यः (martyaḥ) - mortal; कथञ्चन (kathañcana) - by any means; at all; महिषैः (mahiṣaiḥ) - with buffaloes; भेदयामास (bhedayāmāsa) - he caused to be split; he broke; धनुषाक्षः (dhanuṣākṣaḥ) - whose eyes are like bows; bow-eyed; महीधरान् (mahīdharān) - mountains;]
(Not the destined object to go beyond able (is) mortal at all. With buffaloes he caused to be broken, bow-eyed (he broke) mountains.)
No mortal is ever able to transgress what is destined. With buffaloes, the bow-eyed one broke through the mountains. (03-136-13)
एवं लब्ध्वा वरान्बाला दर्पपूर्णास्तरस्विनः। क्षिप्रमेव विनश्यन्ति यथा न स्यात्तथा भवान् ॥०३-१३६-१४॥
evaṁ labdhvā varān bālā darpapūrṇāḥ tarasvinaḥ। kṣiprameva vinaśyanti yathā na syāt tathā bhavān॥03-136-14॥
[एवं (evaṁ) - thus; लब्ध्वा (labdhvā) - having obtained; वरान् (varān) - boons; बाला (bālā) - young ones; दर्पपूर्णाः (darpapūrṇāḥ) - filled with pride; तरस्विनः (tarasvinaḥ) - impetuous ones; क्षिप्रम् (kṣipram) - quickly; एव (eva) - surely; विनश्यन्ति (vinaśyanti) - perish; यथा (yathā) - as; न (na) - not; स्यात् (syāt) - should happen; तथा (tathā) - thus; भवान् (bhavān) - you;]
(Thus, having obtained boons, young ones filled with pride and impetuosity surely quickly perish; as that should not happen thus (to) you.)
Thus, having gained boons, proud and impetuous youths quickly perish; may the same not happen to you (03-136-14).
एष रैभ्यो महावीर्यः पुत्रौ चास्य तथाविधौ। तं यथा पुत्र नाभ्येषि तथा कुर्यास्त्वतन्द्रितः ॥०३-१३६-१५॥
eṣa raibhyo mahāvīryaḥ putrau cāsya tathāvidhau। taṃ yathā putra nābhyeṣi tathā kuryāstvaṭandritaḥ॥03-136-15॥
[एष (eṣa) - this one; रैभ्यः (raibhyaḥ) - to Raibhya; महावीर्यः (mahāvīryaḥ) - of great prowess; पुत्रौ (putrau) - sons (dual); च (ca) - and; अस्य (asya) - of him; तथाविधौ (tathāvidhau) - such; तं (taṃ) - him; यथा (yathā) - just as; पुत्र (putra) - son; न (na) - not; अभ्येषि (abhyeṣi) - you should approach; तथा (tathā) - so; कुर्याः (kuryāḥ) - you should do; त्वतन्द्रितः (tvatandritaḥ) - vigilantly;]
(This to Raibhya of great prowess sons and of him such. Him just as son not you approach, so you should do vigilantly.)
These are Raibhya's very mighty sons, and of him such (sons). As you would not approach a son, likewise you should act, being vigilant. (03-136-15)
स हि क्रुद्धः समर्थस्त्वां पुत्र पीडयितुं रुषा। वैद्यश्चापि तपस्वी च कोपनश्च महानृषिः ॥०३-१३६-१६॥
sa hi kruddhaḥ samarthastvāṁ putra pīḍayituṁ ruṣā। vaidyaś cāpi tapasvī ca kopanaś ca mahān ṛṣiḥ ॥03-136-16॥
[स (sa) - he; हि (hi) - indeed; क्रुद्धः (kruddhaḥ) - angry; समर्थः (samarthaḥ) - capable; त्वां (tvām) - you; पुत्र (putra) - son; पीडयितुं (pīḍayitum) - to oppress; रुषा (ruṣā) - with wrath; वैद्यः (vaidyaḥ) - Vaidya (name); च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; तपस्वी (tapasvī) - ascetic; च (ca) - and; कोपनः (kopanaḥ) - irascible; च (ca) - and; महान् (mahān) - great; ऋषिः (ṛṣiḥ) - sage;]
(He indeed, angry and capable, you, son, to oppress with wrath. Vaidya also, an ascetic and irascible and great sage.)
He is indeed angry and capable, O son, to afflict you with wrath. Vaidya also is an ascetic, irascible, and a great sage. (03-136-16)

एवं करिष्ये मा तापं तात कार्षीः कथञ्चन। यथा हि मे भवान्मान्यस्तथा रैभ्यः पिता मम ॥०३-१३६-१७॥
evaṃ kariṣye mā tāpaṃ tāta kārṣīḥ kathañcana। yathā hi me bhavān mānyaḥ tathā raibhyaḥ pitā mama ॥03-136-17॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; करिष्ये (kariṣye) - I will do; मा (mā) - not; तापं (tāpaṃ) - distress; तात (tāta) - O father; कार्षीः (kārṣīḥ) - may you do; कथञ्चन (kathañcana) - in any way; यथा (yathā) - just as; हि (hi) - indeed; मे (me) - to me; भवान् (bhavān) - you (respectful); मान्यः (mānyaḥ) - honored; तथा (tathā) - so; रैभ्यः (raibhyaḥ) - Raibhya; पिता (pitā) - father; मम (mama) - of me;]
(Thus I will do. Not distress, O father, may you cause in any way. Just as indeed to me you are honored, so Raibhya is the father of me.)
I shall do so. Please do not be distressed in any way, O father. Just as you are honored by me, so is Raibhya my father. (03-136-17)

उक्त्वा स पितरं श्लक्ष्णं यवक्रीरकुतोभयः। विप्रकुर्वन्नृषीनन्यानतुष्यत्परया मुदा ॥०३-१३६-१८॥
uktvā sa pitaraṃ ślakṣṇaṃ yavakrīrakutobhayaḥ। viprakurvannṛṣīnanyānatuṣyatparayā mudā॥03-136-18॥
[उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; स (sa) - he; पितरं (pitaraṃ) - to (his) father; श्लक्ष्णं (ślakṣṇaṃ) - gently; यवक्रीः (yavakrīḥ) - Yavakrī; अकुतोभयः (akutobhayaḥ) - free from fear from any direction; विप्रकुर्वन् (viprakurvan) - offering gifts to brahmins; ऋषीन् (ṛṣīn) - sages; अन्यान् (anyān) - others; अतुष्यत् (atuṣyat) - became delighted; परया (parayā) - with supreme; मुदा (mudā) - joy;]
(Having spoken gently to his father, Yavakrī, free from fear of any direction, became delighted with supreme joy, while offering gifts to brahmins and other sages.)
After gently addressing his father, Yavakrī, fearless from all directions, was overjoyed while making offerings to brahmins and other sages. (03-136-18)
