caṅkramyamāṇaḥ sa tadā yavakrīrakutobhayaḥ। jagāma mādhave māsi raibhyāśramapadaṃ prati ॥03-137-1॥

(Moving about, he then, Yavakrī and Rakuto, both, went in the Mādhava month towards Raibhya's hermitage.)

स ददर्शाश्रमे पुण्ये पुष्पितद्रुमभूषिते। विचरन्तीं स्नुषां तस्य किंनरीमिव भारत ॥०३-१३७-२॥
sa dadarśāśrame puṇye puṣpitadrumabhūṣite। vicarantīṃ snuṣāṃ tasya kiṃnarīmiva bhārata ॥03-137-2॥

यवक्रीस्तामुवाचेदमुपतिष्ठस्व मामिति। निर्लज्जो लज्जया युक्तां कामेन हृतचेतनः ॥०३-१३७-३॥
yavakrīstām uvāca idam upatiṣṭhasva mām iti। nirlajjaḥ lajjayā yuktām kāmena hṛta-cetanaḥ ॥03-137-3॥

Yavakri said to her, "Serve me." Shameless and overtaken by desire, he approached her, though she was filled with shame. (03-137-3)
सा तस्य शीलमाज्ञाय तस्माच्छापाच्च बिभ्यती। तेजस्वितां च रैभ्यस्य तथेत्युक्त्वा जगाम सा ॥०३-१३७-४॥
sā tasya śīlam-ājñāya tasmāt-śāpāt-ca bibhyatī। tejasvitāṃ ca raibhyasya tathety-uktvā jagāma sā॥03-137-4॥
[सा (sā) - she; तस्य (tasya) - his; शीलम् (śīlam) - nature; आज्ञाय (ājñāya) - having understood; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - from him; शापात् (śāpāt) - from curse; च (ca) - and; बिभ्यती (bibhyatī) - fearing; तेजस्वितां (tejasvitām) - brilliance; च (ca) - and; रैभ्यस्य (raibhyasya) - of Raibhya; तथा (tathā) - thus; इति (iti) - so; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having said; जगाम (jagāma) - departed; सा (sā) - she;]
(She, having understood his nature and fearing both from him and his curse, and the brilliance of Raibhya, thus having said so, departed she.)
Having understood his nature and, fearing both him and his curse as well as Raibhya's brilliance, she said 'so be it' and then departed. (03-137-4)
तत एकान्तमुन्नीय मज्जयामास भारत। आजगाम तदा रैभ्यः स्वमाश्रममरिंदम ॥०३-१३७-५॥
tat ekāntam unnīya majjayāmāsa bhārata। ājagāma tadā raibhyaḥ svam āśramam ariṃdama ॥03-137-5॥

(That secluded place having taken, he immersed, O Bhārata. Then Raibhya, conqueror of enemies, came to his own hermitage.)
Having taken that secluded place and immersed (the body or object), O Bhārata, then Raibhya, the conqueror of enemies, came to his own hermitage. (03-137-5)
रुदन्तीं च स्नुषां दृष्ट्वा भार्यामार्तां परावसोः। सान्त्वयञ्श्लक्ष्णया वाचा पर्यपृच्छद्युधिष्ठिर ॥०३-१३७-६॥
rudantīṃ ca snuṣāṃ dṛṣṭvā bhāryām ārtāṃ parāvasoḥ। sāntvayan ślakṣṇayā vācā paryapṛcchad yudhiṣṭhira ॥03-137-6॥

(Having seen the weeping daughter-in-law, the distressed wife of Parāvasu, Yudhiṣṭhira, consoling with gentle speech, enquired.)
Yudhiṣṭhira, seeing Parāvasu's daughter-in-law, who was weeping and distressed, consoled her with gentle words and asked (her). (03-137-6)
सा तस्मै सर्वमाचष्ट यवक्रीभाषितं शुभा। प्रत्युक्तं च यवक्रीतं प्रेक्षापूर्वं तदात्मना ॥०३-१३७-७॥
sā tasmai sarvam ācaṣṭa yavakrībhāṣitaṃ śubhā। pratyuktaṃ ca yavakrītaṃ prekṣā-pūrvaṃ tad-ātmanā ॥03-137-7॥
[सा (sā) - she; तस्मै (tasmai) - to him; सर्वम् (sarvam) - everything; all; आचष्ट (ācaṣṭa) - related; told; यवक्रीभाषितम् (yavakrībhāṣitam) - that which was spoken by Yavakri; Yavakri's speech; शुभा (śubhā) - the auspicious (woman); प्रत्युक्तम् (pratyuktam) - what was replied; answer; च (ca) - and; यवक्रीतम् (yavakrītam) - what was spoken by Yavakri; प्रेक्षा-पूर्वम् (prekṣā-pūrvam) - before observing; previously seen; तत्-आत्मना (tad-ātmanā) - by herself; with her own mind;]
(She to him everything told, the words spoken by Yavakri, the auspicious (woman). What was replied and Yavakri's speech, before observing, by herself.)
She, the virtuous woman, related to him everything—what was spoken by Yavakri, as well as the reply to Yavakri—having observed it herself beforehand. (03-137-7)
शृण्वानस्यैव रैभ्यस्य यवक्रीतविचेष्टितम्। दहन्निव तदा चेतः क्रोधः समभवन्महान् ॥०३-१३७-८॥
śṛṇvānasyaiva raibhyasya yavakrīta-viceṣṭitam। dahanniva tadā cetaḥ krodhaḥ samabhavan mahān॥03-137-8॥
[शृण्वानस्यैव (śṛṇvānasyaiva) - of the one indeed who was hearing; रैभ्यस्य (raibhyasya) - of Raibhya; यवक्रीतविचेष्टितम् (yavakrīta-viceṣṭitam) - action of Yavakrīta; दहन्निव (dahanniva) - as if burning; तदा (tadā) - then; चेतः (cetaḥ) - mind; क्रोधः (krodhaḥ) - anger; समभवन्महान् (samabhavan mahān) - great arose;]
(Of the one indeed hearing, of Raibhya, the action of Yavakrīta—as if burning, then the mind, anger great arose.)
As Raibhya was hearing Yavakrīta’s actions, his mind suddenly filled with great anger, as if burning. (03-137-8)
स तदा मन्युनाविष्टस्तपस्वी भृशकोपनः। अवलुप्य जटामेकां जुहावाग्नौ सुसंस्कृते ॥०३-१३७-९॥
sa tadā manyunāviṣṭas tapasvī bhṛśakopanaḥ। avalupya jaṭām ekāṃ juhāv agnau susaṃskṛte ॥03-137-9॥
[स (sa) - he; तदा (tadā) - then; मन्युनाविष्टः (manyunāviṣṭaḥ) - filled with anger; तपस्वी (tapasvī) - ascetic; भृशकोपनः (bhṛśa-kopanaḥ) - very enraged; अवलुप्य (avalupya) - after plucking; जटाम् (jaṭām) - hair-matted lock; एकां (ekām) - one; जुहाव (juhāva) - offered; अग्नौ (agnau) - into the fire; सुसंस्कृते (susaṃskṛte) - well-prepared;]
(He then, filled with anger, the ascetic, greatly enraged, after plucking one matted lock of hair, offered (it) into the well-prepared fire.)
Then, the ascetic, overcome with great anger, plucked out a single matted lock of hair and offered it into the well-prepared fire. (03-137-9)
ततः समभवन्नारी तस्या रूपेण संमिता। अवलुप्यापरां चाथ जुहावाग्नौ जटां पुनः ॥०३-१३७-१०॥
tataḥ samabhavan nārī tasyā rūpeṇa saṁmitā। avalupyāparāṁ cātha juhāv agnau jaṭāṁ punaḥ॥03-137-10॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; thereafter; समभवन् (samabhavat) - arose; came into being; नारी (nārī) - woman; तस्या (tasyā) - of her; रूपेण (rūpeṇa) - with form; by form; संमिता (saṁmitā) - alike; similar; अवलुप्य (avalupya) - having covered; having concealed; अपरां (aparām) - another; the other; च (ca) - and; अथ (atha) - then; thereafter; जुहाव् (juhāv) - offered; sacrificed; अग्नौ (agnau) - in fire; जटां (jaṭām) - matted hair; पुनः (punaḥ) - again;]
(Then a woman arose, equal to her in form. Having covered the other and then offered the matted hair again into the fire.)
Then, a woman of equal form to her appeared. Having concealed the other one, she again offered the matted hair into the fire. (03-137-10)
ततः समभवद्रक्षो घोराक्षं भीमदर्शनम्। अब्रूतां तौ तदा रैभ्यं किं कार्यं करवामहे ॥०३-१३७-११॥
tataḥ samabhavad rakṣaḥ ghorākṣaṃ bhīmadarśanam। abrūtāṃ tau tadā raibhyaṃ kiṃ kāryaṃ karavāmahe॥03-137-11॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; समभवत् (samabhavat) - arose; रक्षः (rakṣaḥ) - a rakṣas (demon); घोराक्षम् (ghorākṣam) - with fierce eyes; भीमदर्शनम् (bhīmadarśanam) - having a terrible appearance; अब्रूताम् (abrūtām) - the two said; तौ (tau) - those two; तदा (tadā) - then; रैभ्यम् (raibhyaṃ) - to Raibhya; किम् (kim) - what; कार्यं (kāryam) - should be done; करवामहे (karavāmahe) - shall we do;]
(Then arose a rakṣas with fierce eyes, with a terrible appearance. Those two then said to Raibhya, "What (is it) we should do?" (03-137-11))
Then a rakṣas with dreadful eyes and a terrifying appearance appeared. The two of them then said to Raibhya, "What shall we do?" (03-137-11)
तावब्रवीदृषिः क्रुद्धो यवक्रीर्वध्यतामिति। जग्मतुस्तौ तथेत्युक्त्वा यवक्रीतजिघांसया ॥०३-१३७-१२॥
tāvabravīd ṛṣiḥ kruddho yavakrīr vadhyatām iti. jagmatus tau tathety uktvā yavakrīta-jighāṁsayā ॥03-137-12॥
[तौ (tau) - those two; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; ऋषिः (ṛṣiḥ) - the sage; क्रुद्धः (kruddhaḥ) - angry; यवक्रीः (yavakrīḥ) - Yavakrī; वध्यताम् (vadhyatām) - should be killed; इति (iti) - thus; जग्मतुस्तौ (jagmatus tau) - those two went; तथेत्युक्त्वा (tathety uktvā) - having said 'so be it'; यवक्रीतजिघांसया (yavakrīta-jighāṁsayā) - with the intention to kill Yavakrī;]
(Those two, the sage, angry, said, "Yavakrī should be killed," thus. Those two went, having said "so be it," with the intention to kill Yavakrī.)
The angry sage said, "Let Yavakrī be killed." Those two, having replied, "So be it," went with the intention to kill Yavakrī. (3-137-12)
ततस्तं समुपास्थाय कृत्या सृष्टा महात्मना। कमण्डलुं जहारास्य मोहयित्वा तु भारत ॥०३-१३७-१३॥
tatas taṁ samupāsthāya kṛtyā sṛṣṭā mahātmanā। kamaṇḍaluṁ jahāra asya mohayitvā tu bhārata॥ 03-137-13॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; तम् (tam) - him; समुपास्थाय (samupāsthāya) - having approached; कृत्या (kṛtyā) - the magical being (kṛtyā); सृष्टा (sṛṣṭā) - created; महात्मना (mahātmanā) - by the great-souled (one); कमण्डलुम् (kamaṇḍalum) - water-pot; जहारा (jahāra) - took away; अस्य (asya) - of him; मोहयित्वा (mohayitvā) - having deluded; तु (tu) - but; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(Then, having approached him, the kṛtyā created by the great-souled (one) took away his water-pot, having deluded him, but, O Bhārata.)
Then, O Bhārata, the kṛtyā created by the great-souled one approached him, and, after deluding him, took away his water-pot. (03-137-13)
उच्चिष्टं तु यवक्रीतमपकृष्टकमण्डलुम्। तत उद्यतशूलः स राक्षसः समुपाद्रवत् ॥०३-१३७-१४॥
ucchiṣṭaṃ tu yavakrītam apakṛṣṭa-kamaṇḍalum. tata udyata-śūlaḥ sa rākṣasaḥ samupādravat ॥03-137-14॥
[उच्चिष्टं (ucchiṣṭam) - that which is left over; remains; unclean; discarded; तु (tu) - but; indeed; यवक्रीतम् (yavakrītam) - bought with barley; bartered for barley; अपकृष्ट (apakṛṣṭa) - pulled away; removed; कमण्डलुम् (kamaṇḍalum) - water pot; kamaṇḍalu; तत् (tat) - that; उद्यतशूलः (udyata-śūlaḥ) - holding up a spear; with raised trident; सः (saḥ) - he; राक्षसः (rākṣasaḥ) - the rākṣasa; समुपाद्रवत् (samupādravat) - approached; attacked;]
(But the discarded, barley-bought, removed water pot—that rākṣasa, holding up a spear, approached.)
But that rākṣasa, with a raised spear, approached the discarded water pot that had been bought with barley and taken away. (03-137-14)
तमापतन्तं सम्प्रेक्ष्य शूलहस्तं जिघांसया। यवक्रीः सहसोत्थाय प्राद्रवद्येन वै सरः ॥०३-१३७-१५॥
tam āpatantaṃ samprekṣya śūlahastaṃ jighāṃsayā। yavakrīḥ sahasotthāya prādravadyena vai saraḥ॥03-137-15॥
[तम् (tam) - him; आपतन्तम् (āpatantam) - approaching; सम्प्रेक्ष्य (samprekṣya) - having seen; शूलहस्तम् (śūlahastam) - with trident in hand; जिघांसया (jighāṃsayā) - with desire to slay; यवक्रीः (yavakrīḥ) - Yavakrī; सहसा (sahasā) - suddenly; उत्थाय (utthāya) - getting up; प्राद्रवत् (prādravat) - ran away; येन (yena) - towards which; वै (vai) - indeed; सरः (saraḥ) - lake;]
(Him approaching having seen, with trident in hand, with desire to slay, Yavakrī, suddenly getting up, ran away toward which indeed lake.)
Seeing him approaching, with a trident in hand and intent to kill, Yavakrī suddenly got up and ran away toward that same lake. (03-137-15)
जलहीनं सरो दृष्ट्वा यवक्रीस्त्वरितः पुनः। जगाम सरितः सर्वास्ताश्चाप्यासन्विशोषिताः ॥०३-१३७-१६॥
jalahīnaṁ saro dṛṣṭvā yavakrī stvaritaḥ punaḥ। jagāma saritaḥ sarvās tāś cāpy āsan viśoṣitāḥ॥03-137-16॥

(Waterless lake having seen, Yavakrī, in haste, again, went; rivers all, they and also, were dried up.)
Seeing the lake without water, Yavakri, in haste, again went; all the rivers too were found to be dried up. (03-137-16)
स काल्यमानो घोरेण शूलहस्तेन रक्षसा। अग्निहोत्रं पितुर्भीतः सहसा समुपाद्रवत् ॥०३-१३७-१७॥
sa kālyamānaḥ ghoreṇa śūlahastena rakṣasā। agnihotraṃ pitur bhītaḥ sahasā samupādravat ॥03-137-17॥
[स (sa) - he; काल्यमानः (kālyamānaḥ) - being threatened; घोरेण (ghoreṇa) - by the terrible; शूलहस्तेन (śūlahastena) - holding a spear in hand; रक्षसा (rakṣasā) - by the demon; अग्निहोत्रं (agnihotram) - the fire sacrifice; पितुः (pituḥ) - of (his) father; भीतः (bhītaḥ) - afraid; सहसा (sahasā) - suddenly; समुपाद्रवत् (samupādravat) - he rushed upon;]
(He, being threatened by the terrible spear-in-hand demon, afraid for his father, suddenly rushed upon the fire sacrifice.)
Being threatened by the terrible spear-wielding demon, and fearing for his father, he suddenly rushed toward the fire sacrifice. (03-137-17)
स वै प्रविशमानस्तु शूद्रेणान्धेन रक्षिणा। निगृहीतो बलाद्द्वारि सोऽवातिष्ठत पार्थिव ॥०३-१३७-१८॥
sa vai praviśamānas tu śūdreṇāndhena rakṣiṇā। nigṛhīto balād dvāri so'vātiṣṭhata pārthiva ॥03-137-18॥
[स (sa) - he; वै (vai) - indeed; प्रविशमानः (praviśamānaḥ) - entering; तु (tu) - but; शूद्रेण (śūdreṇa) - by the Śūdra; अन्धेन (andhena) - blind; रक्षिणा (rakṣiṇā) - by the guard; निगृहीतः (nigṛhītaḥ) - having been seized; बलात् (balāt) - by force; द्वारि (dvāri) - at the door; सः (saḥ) - he; अवातिष्ठत (āvatiṣṭhata) - stood; पार्थिव (pārthiva) - O king;]
(He indeed, entering, but by the Śūdra, blind guard, having been seized by force at the door, he stood, O king.)
He, as he was entering, was seized by force at the door by the blind Śūdra guard and stood there, O king. (03-137-18)
निगृहीतं तु शूद्रेण यवक्रीतं स राक्षसः। ताडयामास शूलेन स भिन्नहृदयोऽपतत् ॥०३-१३७-१९॥
nigṛhītaṃ tu śūdreṇa yavakrītaṃ sa rākṣasaḥ। tāḍayām āsa śūlena sa bhinnahṛdayo'patat॥03-137-19॥
[निगृहीतं (nigṛhītaṃ) - seized;, तु (tu) - but;, शूद्रेण (śūdreṇa) - by the śūdra;, यवक्रीतं (yavakrītaṃ) - Yavakrīta (proper noun);, स (sa) - he;, राक्षसः (rākṣasaḥ) - the rākṣasa;, ताडयामास (tāḍayām āsa) - struck;, शूलेन (śūlena) - with a spear;, स (sa) - he;, भिन्नहृदयः (bhinnahṛdayaḥ) - with a broken heart;, अपतत् (apatat) - fell;]
(Seized but by the śūdra, Yavakrīta, he the rākṣasa, struck with a spear, he with a broken heart fell.)
But the rākṣasa, having seized Yavakrīta by the śūdra, struck him with a spear; with his heart pierced, he fell down. (03-137-19)
यवक्रीतं स हत्वा तु राक्षसो रैभ्यमागमत्। अनुज्ञातस्तु रैभ्येण तया नार्या सहाचरत् ॥०३-१३७-२०॥
yavakrītaṃ sa hatvā tu rākṣaso raibhyamāgamat। anujñātastu raibhyeṇa tayā nāryā sahācarat॥03-137-20॥

(Yavakrita, he having slain, but the demon, to Raibhya went. Permitted but by Raibhya, by that woman together, he lived.)
After Yavakrita was killed, the demon went to Raibhya. Having been permitted by Raibhya, he lived together with that woman. (03-137-20)
