tatra te puruṣavyāghrāḥ paramaṃ śaucam āsthitāḥ । ṣaḍrātram avasan vīrā dhanañjayadidṛkṣayā ॥ tasmin viharamāṇāś ca ramamāṇāś ca pāṇḍavāḥ ॥03-146-1॥

मनोज्ञे काननवरे सर्वभूतमनोरमे। पादपैः पुष्पविकचैः फलभारावनामितैः ॥०३-१४६-२॥

शोभितं सर्वतोरम्यैः पुंस्कोकिलकुलाकुलैः। स्निग्धपत्रैरविरलैः शीतच्छायैर्मनोरमैः ॥०३-१४६-३॥
śobhitaṃ sarvatoramyaiḥ puṃs-kokila-kula-ākulaiḥ snigdha-patrair-aviralaiḥ śīta-chāyaiḥ manora-maiḥ ॥03-146-3॥

तच्छुभा शुभमासाद्य सौगन्धिकमनुत्तमम्। अतीव मुदिता राजन्भीमसेनमथाब्रवीत् ॥०३-१४६-८॥
tacchubhā śubham āsādya saugandhikam anuttamam | atīva muditā rājan bhīmasenam athābravīt ॥03-146-8॥

पश्य दिव्यं सुरुचिरं भीम पुष्पमनुत्तमम्। गन्धसंस्थानसम्पन्नं मनसो मम नन्दनम् ॥०३-१४६-९॥
paśya divyaṃ suruciraṃ bhīma puṣpam anuttamam। gandhasaṃsthānasampannaṃ manaso mama nandanam॥03-146-9॥

एतत्तु धर्मराजाय प्रदास्यामि परन्तप। हरेरिदं मे कामाय काम्यके पुनराश्रमे ॥०३-१४६-१०॥
etattu dharmarājāya pradāsyāmi parantapa। hareridaṃ me kāmāya kāmyake punarāśrame ॥03-146-10॥

यदि तेऽहं प्रिया पार्थ बहूनीमान्युपाहर। तान्यहं नेतुमिच्छामि काम्यकं पुनराश्रमम् ॥०३-१४६-११॥
yadi te'ham priyā pārtha bahūnīmānyupāhara. tānyahaṃ netumicchāmi kāmyakaṃ punarāśramam ॥03-146-11॥

एवमुक्त्वा तु पाञ्चाली भीमसेनमनिन्दिता। जगाम धर्मराजाय पुष्पमादाय तत्तदा ॥०३-१४६-१२॥
evam-uktvā tu pāñcālī bhīmasenam-aninditā। jagāma dharmarājāya puṣpam-ādāya tat-tadā ॥03-146-12॥

Having thus spoken to Bhīmasena, the blameless Pāñcālī then took the flower and went to Dharma-rāja (Yudhiṣṭhira). (03-146-12)
अभिप्रायं तु विज्ञाय महिष्याः पुरुषर्षभः। प्रियायाः प्रियकामः स भीमो भीमपराक्रमः ॥०३-१४६-१३॥
abhiprāyaṃ tu vijñāya mahiṣyāḥ puruṣarṣabhaḥ। priyāyāḥ priyakāmaḥ sa bhīmo bhīmaparākramaḥ॥03-146-13॥

वातं तमेवाभिमुखो यतस्तत्पुष्पमागतम्। आजिहीर्षुर्जगामाशु स पुष्पाण्यपराण्यपि ॥०३-१४६-१४॥

द्रौपद्याः प्रियमन्विच्छन्स्वबाहुबलमाश्रितः। व्यपेतभयसंमोहः शैलमभ्यपतद्बली ॥०३-१४६-१६॥
draupadyāḥ priyam anvicchan svabāhubalam āśritaḥ। vyapetabhayasaṃmohaḥ śailam abhyapatad balī॥03-146-16॥

स तं द्रुमलतागुल्मच्छन्नं नीलशिलातलम्। गिरिं चचारारिहरः किंनराचरितं शुभम् ॥०३-१४६-१७॥
sa taṃ drumalatā-gulma-channam nīla-śilā-talam। giriṃ cacāra ariharaḥ kiṃnara-acaritam śubham ॥03-146-17॥

नानावर्णधरैश्चित्रं धातुद्रुममृगाण्डजैः। सर्वभूषणसम्पूर्णं भूमेर्भुजमिवोच्छ्रितम् ॥०३-१४६-१८॥
nānā-varṇa-dharaiś-citraṃ dhātu-druma-mṛgāṇḍajaiḥ। sarva-bhūṣaṇa-sampūrṇaṃ bhūmer-bhujam-ivocchritam ॥03-146-18॥

पुंस्कोकिलनिनादेषु षट्पदाभिरुतेषु च। बद्धश्रोत्रमनश्चक्षुर्जगामामितविक्रमः ॥०३-१४६-२०॥
puṁs-kokila-ninādeṣu ṣaṭ-padābhiruteṣu ca। baddha-śrotra-manaś-cakṣur jagāma amita-vikramaḥ॥03-146-20॥

Amidst the calls of male cuckoos and the buzzing of bees, he of boundless valor went on, his ears, mind, and eyes all intent. (03-146-20)
जिघ्रमाणो महातेजाः सर्वर्तुकुसुमोद्भवम्। गन्धमुद्दाममुद्दामो वने मत्त इव द्विपः ॥०३-१४६-२१॥
jighramāṇo mahātejāḥ sarvartukusumodbhavam। gandhamuddāmamuddāmo vane matta iva dvipaḥ ॥03-146-21॥

Smelling the exceedingly strong fragrance arising from the flowers of all seasons in the forest, the mighty one was like an intoxicated elephant. (03-146-21)
ह्रियमाणश्रमः पित्रा सम्प्रहृष्टतनूरुहः। पितुः संस्पर्शशीतेन गन्धमादनवायुना ॥०३-१४६-२२॥
hriyamāṇaśramaḥ pitrā samprahṛṣṭatanūruhaḥ। pituḥ saṃsparśaśītena gandhamādanavāyunā॥03-146-22॥

स यक्षगन्धर्वसुरब्रह्मर्षिगणसेवितम्। विलोडयामास तदा पुष्पहेतोररिंदमः ॥०३-१४६-२३॥
sa yakṣa-gandharva-sura-brahmarṣi-gaṇa-sevitam। viloḍayām āsa tadā puṣpa-hetor ariṃdamaḥ ॥03-146-23॥

विषमच्छेदरचितैरनुलिप्तमिवाङ्गुलैः। विमलैर्धातुविच्छेदैः काञ्चनाञ्जनराजतैः ॥०३-१४६-२४॥
viṣamacchedaracitairanuliptamivāṅgulaiḥ। vimalairdhātuvicchedaḥ kāñcanāñjanarājataiḥ॥03-146-24॥

सपक्षमिव नृत्यन्तं पार्श्वलग्नैः पयोधरैः। मुक्ताहारैरिव चितं च्युतैः प्रस्रवणोदकैः ॥०३-१४६-२५॥
sapakṣam iva nṛtyantam pārśvalagnaiḥ payodharaīḥ। muktāhārair iva citaṃ cyutaiḥ prasravaṇodakaiḥ॥03-146-25॥

दिग्वारणविषाणाग्रैर्घृष्टोपलशिलातलम्। स्रस्तांशुकमिवाक्षोभ्यैर्निम्नगानिःसृतैर्जलैः ॥०३-१४६-२७॥
digvāraṇaviṣāṇāgrairghṛṣṭopalaśilātalam। srastāṃśukamivākṣobhyairnimnagāniḥsṛtairjalaiḥ ॥03-146-27॥

सशष्पकवलैः स्वस्थैरदूरपरिवर्तिभिः। भयस्याज्ञैश्च हरिणैः कौतूहलनिरीक्षितः ॥०३-१४६-२८॥
saśaṣpakavalaiḥ svasthair adūraparivartibhiḥ| bhayasyājñaiś ca hariṇaiḥ kautūhalanirīkṣitaḥ ॥03-146-28॥

चालयन्नूरुवेगेन लताजालान्यनेकशः। आक्रीडमानः कौन्तेयः श्रीमान्वायुसुतो ययौ ॥०३-१४६-२९॥
cālayann ūru-vegena latā-jālāni anekaśaḥ. ākrīḍamānaḥ kaunteyaḥ śrīmān vāyu-sutaḥ yayau ॥03-146-29॥

The fortunate son of Vāyu, the son of Kunti, moving the creeper-thickets in many ways with great speed as he sported, went. (03-146-29)
प्रियामनोरथं कर्तुमुद्यतश्चारुलोचनः। प्रांशुः कनकतालाभः सिंहसंहननो युवा ॥०३-१४६-३०॥
priyāmanorathaṁ kartumudyataścārulocanaḥ। prāṁśuḥ kanakatālābhaḥ siṁhasaṁhanano yuvā॥03-146-30॥

मत्तवारणविक्रान्तो मत्तवारणवेगवान्। मत्तवारणताम्राक्षो मत्तवारणवारणः ॥०३-१४६-३१॥
mattavāraṇavikrānto mattavāraṇavegavān। mattavāraṇatāmrākṣo mattavāraṇavāraṇaḥ ॥03-146-31॥
[मत्तवारणविक्रान्तो (mattavāraṇavikrāntaḥ) - one whose stride is like that of an intoxicated elephant; मत्तवारणवेगवान् (mattavāraṇavegavān) - one possessing the speed of an intoxicated elephant; मत्तवारणताम्राक्षः (mattavāraṇatāmrākṣaḥ) - one whose coppery eyes are like those of an intoxicated elephant; मत्तवारणवारणः (mattavāraṇavāraṇaḥ) - destroyer of intoxicated elephants;]
(One whose stride is like that of an intoxicated elephant, one possessing the speed of an intoxicated elephant, one whose coppery eyes are like those of an intoxicated elephant, destroyer of intoxicated elephants (03-146-31))
He who strides like an intoxicated elephant, possesses the speed of an intoxicated elephant, whose eyes are coppery like those of an intoxicated elephant, and is the vanquisher of intoxicated elephants. (03-146-31)
प्रियपार्श्वोपविष्टाभिर्व्यावृत्ताभिर्विचेष्टितैः। यक्षगन्धर्वयोषाभिरदृश्याभिर्निरीक्षितः ॥०३-१४६-३२॥
priyapārśvopaviṣṭābhir vyāvṛttābhir viceṣṭitaiḥ। yakṣagandharvayoṣābhir adṛśyābhir nirīkṣitaḥ ॥03-146-32॥
[प्रिय (priya) - dear; beloved; पार्श्व (pārśva) - side; उपविष्टाभिः (upaviṣṭābhiḥ) - by those who are seated near; व्यावृत्ताभिः (vyāvṛttābhiḥ) - by those who are turned away; विचेष्टितैः (viceṣṭitaiḥ) - by movements; by activities; यक्ष (yakṣa) - yakṣa; semi-divine being; गन्धर्व (gandharva) - gandharva; celestial singer; योषाभिः (yoṣābhiḥ) - by women; अदृश्याभिः (adṛśyābhiḥ) - by those who are unseen; invisible; निरीक्षितः (nirīkṣitaḥ) - he was observed;]
(He was observed by dear ones sitting at his side, by the ones turned away, by the movements, by women of yakṣas and gandharvas, by those who are invisible.)
He was observed by beloved companions seated by his side, by women of the yakṣas and gandharvas turned away, by their gestures, and by invisible ones. (03-146-32)
नवावतारं रूपस्य विक्रीणन्निव पाण्डवः। चचार रमणीयेषु गन्धमादनसानुषु ॥०३-१४६-३३॥
navāvatāraṃ rūpasya vikrīṇann iva pāṇḍavaḥ। cacāra ramaṇīyeṣu gandhamādanasānuṣu॥03-146-33॥
[नवावतारं (navāvatāram) - new manifestation; रूपस्य (rūpasya) - of form; विक्रीणन् (vikrīṇan) - selling; इव (iva) - as if; पाण्डवः (pāṇḍavaḥ) - the son of Pāṇḍu; चचार (cacāra) - wandered; रमणीयेषु (ramaṇīyeṣu) - in the delightful; गन्धमादनसानुषु (gandhamādanasānuṣu) - on the slopes of Gandhamādana;]
(As if selling a new manifestation of form, the son of Pāṇḍu wandered in the delightful slopes of Gandhamādana.)
The Pāṇḍava, as if displaying a new manifestation of beauty, wandered among the delightful slopes of Gandhamādana. (03-146-33)
संस्मरन्विविधान्क्लेशान्दुर्योधनकृतान्बहून्। द्रौपद्या वनवासिन्याः प्रियं कर्तुं समुद्यतः ॥०३-१४६-३४॥
saṁsmaran vividhān kleśān duryodhana-kṙtān bahūn. draupadyā vanavāsinyāḥ priyaṁ kartuṁ samudyataḥ ॥03-146-34॥
[संस्मरन् (saṁsmaran) - remembering; विविधान् (vividhān) - various; क्लेशान् (kleśān) - distresses; दुर्योधनकृतान् (duryodhana-kṙtān) - done by Duryodhana; बहून् (bahūn) - many; द्रौपद्या (draupadyā) - by Draupadī; वनवासिन्याः (vanavāsinyāḥ) - living in the forest; प्रियं (priyaṁ) - dear thing; कर्तुं (kartuṁ) - to do; समुद्यतः (samudyataḥ) - he became ready;]
(Remembering various distresses done by Duryodhana, many, for Draupadī living in the forest, to do what is dear, he became ready.)
Remembering the various hardships inflicted by Duryodhana, the many, he became ready to do something pleasing for Draupadī, who was residing in the forest. (03-146-34)
सोऽचिन्तयद्गते स्वर्गमर्जुने मयि चागते। पुष्पहेतोः कथं न्वार्यः करिष्यति युधिष्ठिरः ॥०३-१४६-३५॥
so'cintayadgate svargamarjune mayi cāgate. puṣpahetoḥ kathaṁ nvāryaḥ kariṣyati yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ॥03-146-35॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; अचिन्तयत् (acintayat) - thought; गते (gate) - gone; स्वर्गम् (svargam) - to heaven; अर्जुने (arjune) - Arjuna; मयि (mayi) - I; च (ca) - and; आगते (āgate) - (am) come (back); पुष्पहेतोः (puṣpahetoḥ) - for sake of flowers; कथम् (katham) - how; नु (nu) - indeed; आर्यः (āryaḥ) - the noble (one), Yudhishthira; करिष्यति (kariṣyati) - will do; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhishthira;]
(He thought—Arjuna having gone to heaven, and I having returned, for the sake of flowers, how indeed will the noble Yudhishthira act?)
He thought, "With Arjuna gone to heaven and myself returned, how indeed will the noble Yudhishthira act for the sake of the flowers?" (03-146-35)
स्नेहान्नरवरो नूनमविश्वासाद्वनस्य च। नकुलं सहदेवं च न मोक्ष्यति युधिष्ठिरः ॥०३-१४६-३६॥
snehān naravaro nūnam aviśvāsād vanasya ca। nakulaṁ sahadevaṁ ca na mokṣyati yudhiṣṭhiraḥ॥03-146-36॥
[स्नेहान् (snehān) - due to affection; नरवरः (naravaraḥ) - the best of men; नूनम् (nūnam) - surely; अविश्वासात् (aviśvāsāt) - from distrust; वनस्य (vanasya) - of the forest; च (ca) - and; नकुलम् (nakulam) - Nakula; सहदेवम् (sahadevam) - Sahadeva; च (ca) - and; न (na) - not; मोक्ष्यति (mokṣyati) - will release; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhishthira;]
(Due to affection, the best of men surely, from distrust of the forest and, Nakula and Sahadeva and not will release Yudhishthira.)
Surely, Yudhishthira, the best of men, out of affection and suspicion of the forest, will not let Nakula and Sahadeva go. (03-146-36)
कथं नु कुसुमावाप्तिः स्याच्छीघ्रमिति चिन्तयन्। प्रतस्थे नरशार्दूलः पक्षिराडिव वेगितः ॥०३-१४६-३७॥
kathaṁ nu kusumāvāptiḥ syācchīghramiti cintayan। pratasthē naraśārdūlaḥ pakṣirāḍiva vegitaḥ ॥03-146-37॥
[कथं (kathaṁ) - how; नु (nu) - indeed; कुसुमावाप्तिः (kusumāvāptiḥ) - flower-obtaining; स्यात् (syāt) - might be; शीघ्रम् (śīghram) - quickly; इति (iti) - thus; चिन्तयन् (cintayan) - thinking; प्रतस्थे (pratasthē) - set forth; नरशार्दूलः (naraśārdūlaḥ) - tiger among men; पक्षिराट् (pakṣirāṭ) - king of birds; इव (iva) - like; वेगितः (vegitaḥ) - swift;]
(How indeed flower-obtaining might be quickly, thus thinking, set forth the tiger among men, like the king of birds, swift.)
Thinking, "How can I obtain the flowers quickly?", the tiger among men set forth swiftly like the king of birds. (03-146-37)
कम्पयन्मेदिनीं पद्भ्यां निर्घात इव पर्वसु। त्रासयन्गजयूथानि वातरंहा वृकोदरः ॥०३-१४६-३८॥
kampayan medinīṃ padbhyām nirghāta iva parvasu। trāsayan gaja-yūthāni vāta-raṃhā vṛkodaraḥ ॥03-146-38॥

सिंहव्याघ्रगणांश्चैव मर्दमानो महाबलः। उन्मूलयन्महावृक्षान्पोथयंश्चोरसा बली ॥०३-१४६-३९॥
siṃhav-yāghra-gaṇāṃś caiva mardamāno mahābalaḥ। unmūlayan mahāvṛkṣān pothayaṃś corasā balī॥03-146-39॥

लतावल्लीश्च वेगेन विकर्षन्पाण्डुनन्दनः। उपर्युपरि शैलाग्रमारुरुक्षुरिव द्विपः ॥ विनर्दमानोऽतिभृशं सविद्युदिव तोयदः ॥०३-१४६-४०॥
latāvalliś ca vegena vikarṣan pāṇḍunandanaḥ। uparyupari śailāgram ārurukṣur iva dvipaḥ॥ vinardamāno'tibhṛśaṃ savidyud iva toyadaḥ॥03-146-40॥

(And the son of Pāṇḍu, dragging creeper clusters with speed, like an elephant wishing to ascend higher and higher a mountaintop, roaring intensely like a cloud with lightning.)
The son of Pāṇḍu, dragging creeper clusters with speed, climbed higher and higher up the mountain like an elephant striving to ascend, and roared intensely like a cloud flashing with lightning. (3-146-40)
तस्य शब्देन घोरेण धनुर्घोषेण चाभिभो। त्रस्तानि मृगयूथानि समन्ताद्विप्रदुद्रुवुः ॥०३-१४६-४१॥
tasya śabdena ghoreṇa dhanurghoṣeṇa cābhibho. trastāni mṛgayūthāni samantād vipradudruvuḥ ॥03-146-41॥

(By his terrible sound and the twang of the bow resounding, the frightened herds of deer from all sides scattered away.)
At the resounding of his terrible noise and the bow’s twang, the frightened herds of deer scattered away in all directions. (03-146-41)
अथापश्यन्महाबाहुर्गन्धमादनसानुषु। सुरम्यं कदलीषण्डं बहुयोजनविस्तृतम् ॥०३-१४६-४२॥
athāpaśyan mahābāhur gandhamādana-sānuṣu। suramyaṃ kadalīṣaṇḍaṃ bahu-yojana-vistṛtam ॥03-146-42॥

Then the mighty-armed hero saw a beautiful banana grove stretching over many yojanas on the slopes of Gandhamādana. (3-146-42)
तमभ्यगच्छद्वेगेन क्षोभयिष्यन्महाबलः। महागज इवास्रावी प्रभञ्जन्विविधान्द्रुमान् ॥०३-१४६-४३॥
tam abhyagacchad vegena kṣobhayiṣyan mahābalaḥ। mahāgaja iva asrāvī prabhañjan vividhan drumān॥03-146-43॥

The mighty one approached him at speed, eager to agitate him, like a great elephant rushing through, breaking various trees as he advanced. (03-146-43)
उत्पाट्य कदलीस्कन्धान्बहुतालसमुच्छ्रयान्। चिक्षेप तरसा भीमः समन्ताद्बलिनां वरः ॥०३-१४६-४४॥
utpāṭya kadalī-skandhān bahu-tāla-samucchrayān। cikṣepa tarasā bhīmaḥ samantāt balināṃ varaḥ॥03-146-44॥

Bhima, the chief among the strong, forcefully uprooted plantain stems and many tall palm trees and hurled them in all directions. (03-146-44)
ततः सत्त्वान्युपाक्रामन्बहूनि च महान्ति च। रुरुवारणसङ्घाश्च महिषाश्च जलाश्रयाः ॥०३-१४६-४५॥
tataḥ sattvānyupākrāman bahūni ca mahānti ca। ruru-vāraṇa-saṅghāś ca mahiṣāś ca jalāśrayāḥ ॥03-146-45॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; सत्त्वानि (sattvāni) - living beings; उपाक्रामन् (upākrāman) - approached; बहूनि (bahūni) - many; च (ca) - and; महान्ति (mahānti) - huge; च (ca) - and; रुरुवारणसङ्घाः (ruru-vāraṇa-saṅghāḥ) - herds of deer and elephants; च (ca) - and; महिषाः (mahiṣāḥ) - buffaloes; च (ca) - and; जलाश्रयाः (jalāśrayāḥ) - those who abide in water;]
(Then living beings approached—many and huge, and herds of deer and elephants, and buffaloes, and those dwelling in water.)
Then many large living beings approached: herds of deer and elephants, buffaloes, and creatures residing in water. (03-146-45)
सिंहव्याघ्राश्च सङ्क्रुद्धा भीमसेनमभिद्रवन्। व्यादितास्या महारौद्रा विनदन्तोऽतिभीषणाः ॥०३-१४६-४६॥
siṃha-vyāghrāś ca saṅkruddhā bhīmasenam abhidravan। vyāditāsyā mahāraudrā vinadanto 'tibhīṣaṇāḥ ॥03-146-46॥

The lions and tigers, extremely enraged, rushed at Bhīmasena, their mouths wide open, terribly fierce and roaring, most terrifying. (03-146-46)
ततो वायुसुतः क्रोधात्स्वबाहुबलमाश्रितः। गजेनाघ्नन्गजं भीमः सिंहं सिंहेन चाभिभूः ॥ तलप्रहारैरन्यांश्च व्यहनत्पाण्डवो बली ॥०३-१४६-४७॥
tato vāyusutaḥ krodhātsvabāhubalamāśritaḥ। gajenāghnan gajaṃ bhīmaḥ siṃhaṃ siṃhena cābhibhūḥ॥ talaprahārair anyāṃś ca vyahanat pāṇḍavo balī॥03-146-47॥

(Then the son of Vāyu, out of anger, having resorted to his own arm strength, striking an elephant with an elephant, Bhīma overpowered a lion with a lion, and with blows of the palm, the strong Pāṇḍava struck the others.)
Then Bhīma, the son of Vāyu, in anger and relying on his own great strength, struck down elephants with elephants, overpowered lions with lions, and the strong Pāṇḍava struck others with blows of his palm. (03-146-47)
ते हन्यमाना भीमेन सिंहव्याघ्रतरक्षवः। भयाद्विससृपुः सर्वे शकृन्मूत्रं च सुस्रुवुः ॥०३-१४६-४८॥
te hanyamānā bhīmena siṁha-vyāghra-tarākṣavah। bhayād visasṛpuḥ sarve śakṛn-mūtraṁ ca susruvuḥ ॥03-146-48॥

प्रविवेश ततः क्षिप्रं तानपास्य महाबलः। वनं पाण्डुसुतः श्रीमाञ्शब्देनापूरयन्दिशः ॥०३-१४६-४९॥
praviveśa tataḥ kṣipraṃ tānapāsya mahābalaḥ। vanaṃ pāṇḍusutaḥ śrīmāñśabdenāpūrayan diśaḥ ॥03-146-49॥

(Entered then quickly, those having left behind, the mighty, forest, the son of Pāṇḍu, illustrious, with sound, filling the directions.)
Then the mighty and illustrious son of Pāṇḍu, having quickly left them behind, entered the forest, filling the directions with sound. (03-146-49)
तेन शब्देन चोग्रेण भीमसेनरवेण च। वनान्तरगताः सर्वे वित्रेसुर्मृगपक्षिणः ॥०३-१४६-५०॥
tena śabdena ca ugreṇa bhīmasena-raveṇa ca। vanāntara-gatāḥ sarve vitrasuḥ mṛga-pakṣiṇaḥ॥03-146-50॥
[तेन (tena) - by that; शब्देन (śabdena) - by sound; च (ca) - and; उग्रेण (ugreṇa) - by powerful (fierce); भीमसेनरवेण (bhīmasena-raveṇa) - by Bhīmasena's roar; च (ca) - and; वनान्तरगताः (vanāntara-gatāḥ) - having gone inside the forest; सर्वे (sarve) - all; वित्रेसुः (vitrasuḥ) - became frightened; मृगपक्षिणः (mṛga-pakṣiṇaḥ) - animals and birds;]
(By that sound and by the fierce Bhīmasena's roar, all animals and birds who had entered the interior of the forest became frightened.)
All the animals and birds within the forest were frightened by that sound and the fierce roar of Bhīmasena. (03-146-50)
तं शब्दं सहसा श्रुत्वा मृगपक्षिसमीरितम्। जलार्द्रपक्षा विहगाः समुत्पेतुः सहस्रशः ॥०३-१४६-५१॥
taṃ śabdaṃ sahasā śrutvā mṛga-pakṣi-samīritam। jalārdra-pakṣā vihagāḥ samutpetuḥ sahasraśaḥ॥03-146-51॥
[तं (taṃ) - that (object); शब्दं (śabdam) - sound; सहसा (sahasā) - suddenly; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; मृगपक्षिसमीरितम् (mṛga-pakṣi-samīritam) - caused (samīrita) by deer (mṛga) and birds (pakṣi); जलार्द्रपक्षा (jalārdra-pakṣā) - their wings (pakṣāḥ) wet (ārdra) with water (jala); विहगाः (vihagāḥ) - birds; समुत्पेतुः (samutpetuḥ) - arose together; सहस्रशः (sahasraśaḥ) - in thousands;]
(That sound, suddenly having heard, caused by deer and birds; their wings wet with water, the birds arose together in thousands.)
Suddenly hearing that sound, which was caused by the movement of deer and birds, the birds whose wings were wet with water rose together in their thousands. (03-146-51)
तानौदकान्पक्षिगणान्निरीक्ष्य भरतर्षभः। तानेवानुसरन्रम्यं ददर्श सुमहत्सरः ॥०३-१४६-५२॥
tān audakān pakṣigaṇān nirīkṣya bharatarṣabhaḥ। tān eva anusaran ramyaṃ dadarśa sumahat saraḥ॥03-146-52॥
[तान् (tān) - them (those); औदकान् (audakān) - inhabitants of water; aquatic (birds); पक्षिगणान् (pakṣigaṇān) - flocks of birds; निरीक्ष्य (nirīkṣya) - having observed; भरतर्षभः (bharatarṣabhaḥ) - the bull among the Bharatas; (often meaning: Bharata or Rāma, distinguished one of the Bharata dynasty); तान् (tān) - them (those); एव (eva) - indeed; just; अनुसरन् (anusaran) - following; रम्यम् (ramyam) - delightful; beautiful; pleasant; ददर्श (dadarśa) - saw; सुमहत् (sumahat) - very great; very large; सरः (saraḥ) - lake;]
(Having observed those aquatic flocks of birds, the bull among the Bharatas (Bharatarṣabhaḥ), following just them, saw a very great and delightful lake.)
Having seen those flocks of aquatic birds, the noble scion of the Bharatas, following them, found a very beautiful and large lake. (3-146-52)
काञ्चनैः कदलीषण्डैर्मन्दमारुतकम्पितैः। वीज्यमानमिवाक्षोभ्यं तीरान्तरविसर्पिभिः ॥०३-१४६-५३॥
kāñcanaiḥ kadalīṣaṇḍair mandamārutakampitaiḥ। vījyamānam ivākṣobhyaṃ tīrāntaravisarpibhiḥ ॥03-146-53॥
[काञ्चनैः (kāñcanaiḥ) - with golden; कदलीषण्डैः (kadalīṣaṇḍaiḥ) - groups of plantains; मन्दमारुतकम्पितैः (mandamārutakampitaiḥ) - shaken by gentle wind; वीज्यमानम् (vījyamānam) - fanned; इव (iva) - as if; अक्षोभ्यम् (akṣobhyam) - the unshakable one; तीरान्तरविसर्पिभिः (tīrāntaravisarpibhiḥ) - spreading to the inner banks;]
(With golden groups of plantains, shaken by gentle wind, being fanned as if the unshakable one, spreading to the inner banks.)
The unshakable one appeared as if being fanned by golden clusters of plantains, which swayed gently in the wind, spreading across the inner banks. (03-146-53)
तत्सरोऽथावतीर्याशु प्रभूतकमलोत्पलम्। महागज इवोद्दामश्चिक्रीड बलवद्बली ॥ विक्रीड्य तस्मिन्सुचिरमुत्ततारामितद्युतिः ॥०३-१४६-५४॥
tatsaro'thāvatīryāśu prabhūta-kamalotpalaṃ. mahāgaja ivo-ddāmaś cikrīḍa balavad-balī. vikrīḍya tasmin suciram uttatār āmitadyutiḥ. 03-146-54
[तत्सरः (tatsaraḥ) - that lake; अथ (atha) - then; अवतीर्य (avatīrya) - having entered; आशु (āśu) - quickly; प्रभूतकमलोत्पलम् (prabhūta-kamalotpalaṃ) - abounding in lotuses and water-lilies; महागजः (mahāgajaḥ) - great elephant; इव (iva) - like; उद्दामः (uddāmaḥ) - mighty; च (ca) - and; चिक्रीड (cikrīḍa) - played; बलवत् (balavat) - strong; बली (balī) - powerful; विक्रीड्य (vikrīḍya) - having sported; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that (lake); सुचिरम् (suciram) - for a long time; उत्ततार (uttatāra) - arose (came out); आमितद्युतिः (āmitadyutiḥ) - of immense radiance;]
(That lake then having entered quickly, abounding in lotuses and water-lilies, like a mighty great elephant, strong and powerful, played. Having sported there for a long time, of immense radiance, arose.)
He quickly entered that lake, which was abounding in lotuses and water-lilies, and like a mighty great elephant, strong and powerful, he played. After sporting there for a long time, he, of immense radiance, arose from it. (3-146-54)
ततोऽवगाह्य वेगेन तद्वनं बहुपादपम्। दध्मौ च शङ्खं स्वनवत्सर्वप्राणेन पाण्डवः ॥०३-१४६-५५॥
tato'vagāhya vegena tad vanaṃ bahupādapam। dadhmau ca śaṅkhaṃ svanavat sarvaprāṇena pāṇḍavaḥ ॥03-146-55॥
[ततः (ततः) (tataḥ) - thereupon; then; अवगाह्य (अवगाह्य) (avagāhya) - having plunged into; having entered; वेगेन (वेगेन) (vegena) - with speed; swiftly; तद् (तद्) (tad) - that; वनम् (वनम्) (vanam) - forest; बहुपादपम् (बहुपादपम्) (bahupādapam) - with many trees; दध्मौ (दध्मौ) (dadhmau) - blew; च (च) (ca) - and; शङ्खम् (शङ्खम्) (śaṅkham) - conch; स्वनवत् (स्वनवत्) (svanavat) - resoundingly; with a sound; सर्वप्राणेन (सर्वप्राणेन) (sarvaprāṇena) - with all his breath; पाण्डवः (पाण्डवः) (pāṇḍavaḥ) - the Pāṇḍava;]
(Then having entered that forest with many trees swiftly, the Pāṇḍava blew the conch resoundingly with all his breath.)

तस्य शङ्खस्य शब्देन भीमसेनरवेण च। बाहुशब्देन चोग्रेण नर्दन्तीव गिरेर्गुहाः ॥०३-१४६-५६॥
tasya śaṅkhasya śabdena bhīmasenaraveṇa ca। bāhuśabdena ca ogreṇa nardantīva girer guhāḥ ॥03-146-56॥
[तस्य (tasya) - of his; शङ्खस्य (śaṅkhasya) - of the conch; शब्देन (śabdena) - by the sound; भीमसेनरवेण (bhīmasenaraveṇa) - by the roar of Bhīmasena; च (ca) - and; बाहुशब्देन (bāhuśabdena) - by the sound of (his) arm; च (ca) - and; उग्रेण (ogreṇa) - by the fierce; नर्दन्तीव (nardantīva) - as if roaring; गिरेः (gireḥ) - of the mountain; गुहाः (guhāḥ) - the caves;]
(By his conch's sound, by the roar of Bhīmasena, and by the fierce sound of (his) arm, as if roaring, the caves of the mountain (resounded).)
By the sound of his conch, by Bhīmasena's roar, and by the fierce sound of his arm, the caves of the mountain seemed to roar.
तं वज्रनिष्पेषसममास्फोटितरवं भृशम्। श्रुत्वा शैलगुहासुप्तैः सिंहैर्मुक्तो महास्वनः ॥०३-१४६-५७॥
taṃ vajraniṣpeṣa-samam āsphoṭita-ravaṃ bhṛśam। śrutvā śaila-guhā-suptaiḥ siṃhaiḥ mukto mahā-svanaḥ ॥03-146-57॥
[तं (taṃ) - him; वज्रनिष्पेषसमम् (vajraniṣpeṣa-samam) - equal to the crashing of thunderbolt; आस्फोटितरवम् (āsphoṭita-ravam) - with a bursting noise; भृशम् (bhṛśam) - fiercely; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; शैलगुहासुप्तैः (śaila-guhā-suptaiḥ) - by those sleeping in mountain caves; सिंहैः (siṃhaiḥ) - by lions; मुक्तः (muktaḥ) - uttered; महास्वनः (mahā-svanaḥ) - great roar;]
(Him, equal to the crashing of a thunderbolt, with a bursting noise, fiercely—having heard (the sound), by those lions sleeping in mountain caves, uttered was a great roar.)
Hearing that fierce bursting sound, equal to the crash of a thunderbolt, a great roar was let out by the lions sleeping in the mountain caves. (03-146-57)
सिंहनादभयत्रस्तैः कुञ्जरैरपि भारत। मुक्तो विरावः सुमहान्पर्वतो येन पूरितः ॥०३-१४६-५८॥
siṃhanāda-bhaya-trastaiḥ kuñjarair api bhārata। mukto virāvaḥ sumahān parvato yena pūritaḥ ॥03-146-58॥
[सिंहनाद (siṃhanāda) - lion's roar; भय (bhaya) - fear; त्रस्तैः (trastaiḥ) - by those made frightened; कुञ्जरैः (kuñjaraiḥ) - by elephants; अपि (api) - even; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; मुक्तः (muktaḥ) - emitted; विरावः (virāvaḥ) - the loud cry; सुमहान् (sumahān) - very great; पर्वतः (parvataḥ) - mountain; येन (yena) - by which; पूरितः (pūritaḥ) - was filled;]
(O Bhārata, even by elephants frightened by fear of the lion’s roar, a very great loud cry was emitted, by which the mountain was filled.)
O Bhārata, even elephants terrified by the fear of a lion's roar let out such a tremendous cry that the mountain was filled with it. (03-146-58)
तं तु नादं ततः श्रुत्वा सुप्तो वानरपुङ्गवः। प्राजृम्भत महाकायो हनूमान्नाम वानरः ॥०३-१४६-५९॥
taṃ tu nādaṃ tataḥ śrutvā supto vānarapuṅgavaḥ। prājṛmbhata mahākāyo hanūmānnāma vānaraḥ॥03-146-59॥
[तं (taṃ) - him; (the) sound; तु (tu) - but; नादं (nādaṃ) - sound; ततः (tataḥ) - then; from that; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; सुप्तः (suptaḥ) - sleeping; वानरपुङ्गवः (vānarapuṅgavaḥ) - the foremost of monkeys; प्राजृम्भत (prājṛmbhata) - awoke; stretched; महाकायः (mahākāyaḥ) - of great body; huge-bodied; हनूमान्नाम (hanūmānnāma) - named Hanuman; वानरः (vānaraḥ) - the monkey;]
(But having heard that sound then, the sleeping foremost of monkeys, the huge-bodied monkey named Hanuman, awoke.)
But on hearing that sound, the mighty-bodied, sleeping foremost of monkeys named Hanuman awoke. (03-146-59)
कदलीषण्डमध्यस्थो निद्रावशगतस्तदा। जृम्भमाणः सुविपुलं शक्रध्वजमिवोच्छ्रितम् ॥ आस्फोटयत लाङ्गूलमिन्द्राशनिसमस्वनम् ॥०३-१४६-६०॥
kadalīṣaṇḍamadhyastho nidrāvaśagatastadā। jṛmbhamāṇaḥ suvippulaṃ śakradhvajamivocchritam ॥ āsphoṭayata lāṅgūlam indrāśanisamasvanam ॥03-146-60॥

अथोपसृत्य तरसा भीमो भीमपराक्रमः। सिंहनादं समकरोद्बोधयिष्यन्कपिं तदा ॥०३-१४६-७२॥

(By that terrible sound, the animals and birds were frightened; Hanuman, the great-souled one, slightly opening his eyes, then looked with disregard with his honey-golden eyes.)

(With a smile, having addressed the son of Kunti, the monkey said to the man: For what reason, when you are in pain, have I, happily sleeping, been awakened?)

[ननु (nanu) - indeed; नाम (nāma) - certainly; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; कार्या (kāryā) - should be done; दया (dayā) - compassion; भूतेषु (bhūteṣu) - to living beings; जानता (jānatā) - (by) the one who knows; वयम् (vayam) - we; धर्मम् (dharmaṃ) - righteousness; न (na) - not; जानीमः (jānīmaḥ) - (do) know; तिर्यग्योनिम् (tiryag-yonim) - the non-human (animal) womb; समाश्रिताः (samāśritāḥ) - resorted to (have taken refuge in);]
(Indeed, certainly, by you, should be done, compassion, to living beings, by the one who knows. We, righteousness, not, (do) know, the non-human womb, resorted to.)
Indeed, surely compassion should be shown by you, the wise, towards living beings. We have not known righteousness, as we have taken refuge in an animal birth. (03-146-75)
मनुष्या बुद्धिसम्पन्ना दयां कुर्वन्ति जन्तुषु। क्रूरेषु कर्मसु कथं देहवाक्चित्तदूषिषु ॥ धर्मघातिषु सज्जन्ते बुद्धिमन्तो भवद्विधाः ॥०३-१४६-७६॥
manuṣyā buddhi-sampannā dayāṃ kurvanti jantuṣu. krūreṣu karmasu kathaṃ deha-vāk-citta-dūṣiṣu ॥ dharma-ghātiṣu sajjante buddhimanto bhavad-vidhāḥ ॥03-146-76॥
[मनुष्या (manuṣyā) - humans; बुद्धिसम्पन्ना (buddhi-sampannā) - endowed with intelligence; दयां (dayām) - compassion; कुर्वन्ति (kurvanti) - perform; जन्तुषु (jantuṣu) - towards creatures; क्रूरेषु (krūreṣu) - in cruel; कर्मसु (karmasu) - actions; कथं (kathaṃ) - how; देहवाक्चित्तदूषिषु (deha-vāk-citta-dūṣiṣu) - which corrupt body, speech, and mind; धर्मघातिषु (dharma-ghātiṣu) - which destroy dharma; सज्जन्ते (sajjante) - engage; बुद्धिमन्तो (buddhimantaḥ) - the intelligent ones; भवद्विधाः (bhavad-vidhāḥ) - like you;]
(Humans endowed with intelligence perform compassion towards creatures. In cruel actions which corrupt body, speech, and mind, which destroy dharma, how intelligent ones like you engage?)
Humans endowed with intelligence show compassion to living beings. How could intelligent people like you become involved in cruel actions that corrupt body, speech, and mind and destroy righteousness? (03-146-76)
न त्वं धर्मं विजानासि वृद्धा नोपासितास्त्वया। अल्पबुद्धितया वन्यानुत्सादयसि यन्मृगान् ॥०३-१४६-७७॥
na tvaṃ dharmaṃ vijānāsi vṛddhā nopāsitāstvayā। alpabuddhitayā vanyānutsādayasi yan mṛgān॥03-146-77॥
[न (na) - not; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; धर्मं (dharmaṃ) - dharma; righteousness; विजानासि (vijānāsi) - (you) know; वृद्धा (vṛddhā) - elders; न (na) - not; उपासिताः (upāsitāḥ) - (have been) attended (by you); त्वया (tvayā) - by you; अल्पबुद्धितया (alpabuddhitayā) - by (your) small intellect; वन्यान् (vanyān) - forest (animals); उत्सादयसि (utsādayasi) - you destroy; यत् (yat) - in that; मृगान् (mṛgān) - deer;]
(Not you dharma know; elders not attended by you; by small intellect forest (animals) you destroy in that deer.)
You do not know dharma; elders have not been attended by you. With a small intellect, you are destroying the wild animals, namely, the deer. (03-146-77)
ब्रूहि कस्त्वं किमर्थं वा वनं त्वमिदमागतः। वर्जितं मानुषैर्भावैस्तथैव पुरुषैरपि ॥०३-१४६-७८॥
brūhi kastvaṁ kimarthaṁ vā vanaṁ tvamidam āgataḥ। varjitaṁ mānuṣairbhāvaistathaiva puruṣairapi ॥03-146-78॥
[ब्रूहि (brūhi) - speak; कः (kaḥ) - who; त्वम् (tvam) - you; किमर्थम् (kimartham) - for what reason; वा (vā) - or; वनम् (vanam) - forest; त्वम् (tvam) - you; इदम् (idam) - this; आगतः (āgataḥ) - (have) come; वर्जितम् (varjitam) - devoid; मानुषैः (mānuṣaiḥ) - by humans; भावैः (bhāvaiḥ) - with feelings; तथा एव (tathā eva) - likewise; पुरुषैः (puruṣaiḥ) - by men; अपि (api) - also;]
(Speak, who are you, for what reason or the forest you this have come; devoid by humans feelings likewise by men also.)
Speak, who are you and for what purpose have you come to this forest, which is devoid of human feelings and likewise of men also. (3-146-78)
अतः परमगम्योऽयं पर्वतः सुदुरारुहः। विना सिद्धगतिं वीर गतिरत्र न विद्यते ॥०३-१४६-७९॥
ataḥ paramagamyoyam parvataḥ sudurāruhaḥ। vinā siddhagatiṁ vīra gatirattra na vidyate॥03-146-79॥
[अतः (ataḥ) - therefore; परमगम्यः (paramagamyaḥ) - extremely difficult to reach; अयम् (ayam) - this; पर्वतः (parvataḥ) - mountain; सुदुरारुहः (sudurāruhaḥ) - very hard to ascend; विना (vinā) - without; सिद्धगतिम् (siddhagatiṁ) - the movement (progress) of the siddha (perfected ones); वीर (vīra) - hero; गतिः (gatiḥ) - way; अत्र (atra) - here; न (na) - not; विद्यते (vidyate) - exists;]
(Therefore, this mountain extremely difficult to reach, very hard to ascend; without the progress of the siddhas, O hero, a way here does not exist.)
Therefore, this mountain is extremely difficult to approach and very hard to ascend; O hero, unless one possesses the progress of the siddhas, there is no way here. (03-146-79)
कारुण्यात्सौहृदाच्चैव वारये त्वां महाबल। नातः परं त्वया शक्यं गन्तुमाश्वसिहि प्रभो ॥०३-१४६-८०॥
kāruṇyāt sauhṛdāc caiva vāraye tvāṃ mahābala। nātaḥ paraṃ tvayā śakyaṃ gantum āśvasihi prabho॥03-146-80॥

(From compassion and from friendship indeed, I restrain you, O mighty one. Beyond this, by you, it is not possible to go; be reassured, O lord.)

इमान्यमृतकल्पानि मूलानि च फलानि च। भक्षयित्वा निवर्तस्व ग्राह्यं यदि वचो मम ॥०३-१४६-८१॥
imāny amṛtakalpāni mūlāni ca phalāni ca। bhakṣayitvā nivartasva grāhyaṃ yadi vaco mama॥03-146-81॥
