वैशम्पायन उवाच॥
Vaiśampāyana said.
युधिष्ठिरस्तमासाद्य तपसा दग्धकिल्बिषम्। अभ्यवादयत प्रीतः शिरसा नाम कीर्तयन् ॥०३-१५६-१॥
Yudhishthira, having approached him whose sin had been burned away by asceticism, gladly greeted him with bowed head, reciting his name. (03-156-1)
ततः कृष्णा च भीमश्च यमौ चापि यशस्विनौ। शिरोभिः प्राप्य राजर्षिं परिवार्योपतस्थिरे ॥०३-१५६-२॥
Then Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī), Bhīma, and the illustrious twins (Nakula and Sahadeva), approached and, bowing their heads, surrounded the royal sage and stood near him. (03-156-2)
तथैव धौम्यो धर्मज्ञः पाण्डवानां पुरोहितः। यथान्यायमुपाक्रान्तस्तमृषिं संशितव्रतम् ॥०३-१५६-३॥
Likewise, Dhaumya, who knew dharma and was the priest of the Pāṇḍavas, approached that sage of firm vows according to the proper rule. (03-156-3)
अन्वजानात्स धर्मज्ञो मुनिर्दिव्येन चक्षुषा। पाण्डोः पुत्रान्कुरुश्रेष्ठानास्यतामिति चाब्रवीत् ॥०३-१५६-४॥
The sage, knower of dharma, perceiving with divine vision, said concerning the sons of Pāṇḍu, the foremost of the Kurus, "let them be seated." (03-156-4)
कुरूणामृषभं प्राज्ञं पूजयित्वा महातपाः। सह भ्रातृभिरासीनं पर्यपृच्छदनामयम् ॥०३-१५६-५॥
The great ascetic, after honoring the wise leader of the Kurus, together with his brothers, questioned him, who was seated, about his welfare. (03-156-5)
नानृते कुरुषे भावं कच्चिद्धर्मे च वर्तसे। मतापित्रोश्च ते वृत्तिः कच्चित्पार्थ न सीदति ॥०३-१५६-६॥
O Pārtha, do you act only truthfully and live righteously? Does your conduct toward your father and mother remain steadfast, never faltering? (03-156-6)
कच्चित्ते गुरवः सर्वे वृद्धा वैद्याश्च पूजिताः। कच्चिन्न कुरुषे भावं पार्थ पापेषु कर्मसु ॥०३-१५६-७॥
Are all your elders, the aged and physicians, duly honored by you? And, O Pārtha, do you refrain from entertaining an intention towards sinful actions? (03-156-7)
सुकृतं प्रतिकर्तुं च कच्चिद्धातुं च दुष्कृतम्। यथान्यायं कुरुश्रेष्ठ जानासि न च कत्थसे ॥०३-१५६-८॥
O best of the Kurus, do you know how to properly repay a good deed and curb a bad deed according to justice, and do not boast. (3-156-8)
यथार्हं मानिताः कच्चित्त्वया नन्दन्ति साधवः। वनेष्वपि वसन्कच्चिद्धर्ममेवानुवर्तसे ॥०३-१५६-९॥
Are the virtuous people honored by you as is proper surely pleased? While living even in the forests, do you indeed continue to follow only dharma? (03-156-9)
कच्चिद्धौम्यस्त्वदाचारैर्न पार्थ परितप्यते। दानधर्मतपःशौचैरार्जवेन तितिक्षया ॥०३-१५६-१०॥
O Pārtha, is Dhaumya not, by your conduct, grieved?—as you possess charity, righteousness, austerity, purity, sincerity, and forbearance. (03-156-10)
पितृपैतामहं वृत्तं कच्चित्पार्थानुवर्तसे। कच्चिद्राजर्षियातेन पथा गच्छसि पाण्डव ॥०३-१५६-११॥
Are you following the conduct of your father and grandfather, O Pārtha? Are you proceeding along the path of the royal sages, O Pāṇḍava? (03-156-11)
स्वे स्वे किल कुले जाते पुत्रे नप्तरि वा पुनः। पितरः पितृलोकस्थाः शोचन्ति च हसन्ति च ॥०३-१५६-१२॥
When in their own family a son or grandson is born again, the ancestors dwelling in the realm of the ancestors indeed either grieve or rejoice. (03-156-12)
किं न्वस्य दुष्कृतेऽस्माभिः सम्प्राप्तव्यं भविष्यति। किं चास्य सुकृतेऽस्माभिः प्राप्तव्यमिति शोभनम् ॥०३-१५६-१३॥
What, indeed, will be obtained by us from his bad deed? And what is to be obtained by us from his good deed? Thinking thus is excellent. (03-156-13)
पिता माता तथैवाग्निर्गुरुरात्मा च पञ्चमः। यस्यैते पूजिताः पार्थ तस्य लोकावुभौ जितौ ॥०३-१५६-१४॥
O Pārtha, he whose father, mother, fire, teacher, and self—that is, these five—are honored, for him both worlds are conquered. (03-156-14)
अब्भक्षा वायुभक्षाश्च प्लवमाना विहायसा। जुषन्ते पर्वतश्रेष्ठमृषयः पर्वसन्धिषु ॥०३-१५६-१५॥
Sages who subsist on water, on air, and those who move through the sky dwell on the best of mountains, at the joints of the hills. (03-156-15)
कामिनः सह कान्ताभिः परस्परमनुव्रताः। दृश्यन्ते शैलशृङ्गस्थास्तथा किम्पुरुषा नृप ॥०३-१५६-१६॥
O king, the Kimpuruṣas, desirous and mutually devoted with their beloveds, are seen on the mountain peaks.
अरजांसि च वासांसि वसानाः कौशिकानि च। दृश्यन्ते बहवः पार्थ गन्धर्वाप्सरसां गणाः ॥०३-१५६-१७॥
O Pārtha, many groups of Gandharvas and Apsarases, wearing dust-covered and silk garments, are seen here. (03-156-17)
विद्याधरगणाश्चैव स्रग्विणः प्रियदर्शनाः। महोरगगणाश्चैव सुपर्णाश्चोरगादयः ॥०३-१५६-१८॥
There were groups of Vidyādharas, splendidly garlanded and pleasing to behold, and also great serpent beings, Suparṇas, and various kinds of serpents and others. (03-156-18)
अस्य चोपरि शैलस्य श्रूयते पर्वसन्धिषु। भेरीपणवशङ्खानां मृदङ्गानां च निस्वनः ॥०३-१५६-१९॥
Upon this mountain, the sound of drums, kettledrums, conches, and mṛdaṅgas is heard echoing in the mountain passes. (03-156-19)
इहस्थैरेव तत्सर्वं श्रोतव्यं भरतर्षभाः। न कार्या वः कथञ्चित्स्यात्तत्राभिसरणे मतिः ॥०३-१५६-२०॥
O best of the Bharatas, all that should be heard by those who are stationed here itself; in no way should you form the intention of advancing there. (03-156-20)
न चाप्यतः परं शक्यं गन्तुं भरतसत्तमाः। विहारो ह्यत्र देवानाममानुषगतिस्तु सा ॥०३-१५६-२१॥
O best of the Bharatas, it is not possible to go beyond this point; for indeed, roaming here belongs to the gods—such a way is not for humans. (03-156-21)
ईषच्चपलकर्माणं मनुष्यमिह भारत। द्विषन्ति सर्वभूतानि ताडयन्ति च राक्षसाः ॥०३-१५६-२२॥
O Bhārata, here, all beings hate a man of slightly fickle conduct, and the rākṣasas strike him. (03-156-22)
अभ्यतिक्रम्य शिखरं शैलस्यास्य युधिष्ठिर। गतिः परमसिद्धानां देवर्षीणां प्रकाशते ॥०३-१५६-२३॥
O Yudhiṣṭhira, after crossing the summit of this mountain, the path of the most perfected beings, the divine ṛṣis, becomes visible. (03-156-23)
चापलादिह गच्छन्तं पार्थ यानमतः परम्। अयःशूलादिभिर्घ्नन्ति राक्षसाः शत्रुसूदन ॥०३-१५६-२४॥
O Pārtha, the Rākṣasas strike with iron spears and such at the chariot that goes from here beyond Chapala, O slayer of enemies. (03-156-24)
अप्सरोभिः परिवृतः समृद्ध्या नरवाहनः। इह वैश्रवणस्तात पर्वसन्धिषु दृश्यते ॥०३-१५६-२५॥
Here, dear one, Kubera, known as Vaiśravaṇa and Nara-vāhana, surrounded by apsarases and abundance, is seen at the meeting places of the mountains. (03-156-25)
शिखरे तं समासीनमधिपं सर्वरक्षसाम्। प्रेक्षन्ते सर्वभूतानि भानुमन्तमिवोदितम् ॥०३-१५६-२६॥
All beings gaze at that lord of all the rākṣasas, seated on the peak, as if he were the radiant sun just risen. (03-156-26)
देवदानवसिद्धानां तथा वैश्रवणस्य च। गिरेः शिखरमुद्यानमिदं भरतसत्तम ॥०३-१५६-२७॥
O best of the Bharatas, this summit garden of the mountain is for the gods, demons, siddhas, and also for Vaiśravaṇa. (03-156-27)
उपासीनस्य धनदं तुम्बुरोः पर्वसन्धिषु। गीतसामस्वनस्तात श्रूयते गन्धमादने ॥०३-१५६-२८॥
O dear, on Gandhamadana mountain, the sound of Tumburu singing and chanting for the seated Dhanada (Kubera) is heard at the junctions of the hills. (03-156-28)
एतदेवंविधं चित्रमिह तात युधिष्ठिर। प्रेक्षन्ते सर्वभूतानि बहुशः पर्वसन्धिषु ॥०३-१५६-२९॥
O Yudhiṣṭhira, dear one, all beings repeatedly observe such wondrous things as this here at the junctures of the parvans. (03-156-29)
भुञ्जानाः सर्वभोज्यानि रसवन्ति फलानि च। वसध्वं पाण्डवश्रेष्ठा यावदर्जुनदर्शनम् ॥०३-१५६-३०॥
Enjoy all kinds of food and juicy fruits, and remain here, O best of the Pāṇḍavas, until Arjuna is seen. (03-156-30)
न तात चपलैर्भाव्यमिह प्राप्तैः कथञ्चन। उषित्वेह यथाकामं यथाश्रद्धं विहृत्य च ॥ ततः शस्त्रभृतां श्रेष्ठ पृथिवीं पालयिष्यसि ॥०३-१५६-३१॥
O dear one, one should not remain here in any way with those who are restless and have arrived; having stayed here as long as you wish and as your faith allows, and having spent your time, then, O best of warriors, you will protect the earth. (03-156-31)
