dhṛtarāṣṭrasya tadvākyaṃ niśamya sahasoubalaḥ। duryodhanam idaṃ kāle karṇo vacanam abravīt ॥03-226-1॥

Having heard those words of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, Śakuni, son of Subala, at the right time, Karṇa spoke this word to Duryodhana. (03-226-1)
प्रव्राज्य पाण्डवान्वीरान्स्वेन वीर्येण भारत। भुङ्क्ष्वेमां पृथिवीमेको दिवं शम्बरहा यथा ॥०३-२२६-२॥
pravrājya pāṇḍavān vīrān svena vīryeṇa bhārata। bhuṅkṣve imāṃ pṛthivīm ekaḥ divaṃ śambara-hā yathā॥03-226-2॥
[प्रव्राज्य (pravrājya) - having caused to depart; पाण्डवान् (pāṇḍavān) - the Pāṇḍavas; वीरान् (vīrān) - heroes; स्वेन (svena) - by own; वीर्येण (vīryeṇa) - strength; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; भुङ्क्ष्व (bhuṅkṣva) - enjoy; इमां (imām) - this; पृथिवीम् (pṛthivīm) - earth; एकः (ekaḥ) - alone; दिवं (divaṃ) - heaven; शम्बरहा (śambara-hā) - the slayer of Śambara; यथा (yathā) - just as;]
(Having caused the heroic Pāṇḍavas to depart by your own strength, O Bhārata, enjoy this earth alone, just as the slayer of Śambara (did) heaven.)
O Bhārata, having driven the heroic Pāṇḍavas away by your own strength, enjoy this earth alone, just as the slayer of Śambara enjoyed heaven. (03-226-2)
प्राच्याश्च दाक्षिणात्याश्च प्रतीच्योदीच्यवासिनः। कृताः करप्रदाः सर्वे राजानस्ते नराधिप ॥०३-२२६-३॥
prācyāś ca dākṣiṇātyāś ca pratīcy-udīcya-vāsinaḥ। kṛtāḥ karapradāḥ sarve rājānas te narādhipa ॥03-226-3॥
[प्राच्याः (prācyāḥ) - Eastern (kings); च (ca) - and; दाक्षिणात्याः (dākṣiṇātyāḥ) - Southern (kings); च (ca) - and; प्रतीच्य (pratīcya) - Western; उदीच्य (udīcya) - Northern; वासिनः (vāsinaḥ) - inhabitants; कृताः (kṛtāḥ) - made; करप्रदाः (karapradāḥ) - tribute-payers; सर्वे (sarve) - all; राजानः (rājānaḥ) - kings; ते (te) - those; नराधिप (narādhipa) - O lord of men;]
(Eastern and Southern and Western Northern inhabitants made tribute-payers all kings those O lord of men.)
O lord of men, all those kings dwelling in the East, South, West, and North have been made tribute-payers. (03-226-3)
या हि सा दीप्यमानेव पाण्डवान्भजते पुरा। साद्य लक्ष्मीस्त्वया राजन्नवाप्ता भ्रातृभिः सह ॥०३-२२६-४॥
yā hi sā dīpyamānevā pāṇḍavānbhajate purā। sā'dya lakṣmīstvayā rājannavāptā bhrātṛbhiḥ saha॥03-226-4॥
[या (yā) - who; (feminine, nominative singular); हि (hi) - indeed; सा (sā) - she; दीप्यमानेव (dīpyamānevā) - as if blazing; (dīpyamāna - shining, iva - as if); पाण्डवान् (pāṇḍavān) - the Pāṇḍavas; (accusative plural); भजते (bhajate) - favored; पुरा (purā) - formerly; सा (sā) - that; अद्य (adya) - now; लक्ष्मीः (lakṣmīḥ) - fortune; prosperity; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; राजन् (rājan) - O king; अवाप्ता (avāptā) - attained; gained; भ्रातृभिः (bhrātṛbhiḥ) - with brothers; सह (saha) - together; with;]
(She indeed, who formerly as if blazing, favored the Pāṇḍavas; that fortune now by you, O king, is attained together with your brothers.)
O king, that fortune, which once seemed to shine on and favor the Pāṇḍavas, has now been attained by you along with your brothers. (03-226-4)
इन्द्रप्रस्थगते यां तां दीप्यमानां युधिष्ठिरे। अपश्याम श्रियं राजन्नचिरं शोककर्शिताः ॥०३-२२६-५॥
indraprasthagate yāṃ tāṃ dīpyamānāṃ yudhiṣṭhire। apaśyāma śriyaṃ rājanna ciraṃ śokakarśitāḥ॥03-226-5॥
[इन्द्रप्रस्थगते (indraprasthagate) - having gone to Indraprastha; यां (yāṃ) - whom; तां (tāṃ) - her; दीप्यमानां (dīpyamānām) - shining; युधिष्ठिरे (yudhiṣṭhire) - in Yudhiṣṭhira; अपश्याम (apaśyāma) - we saw; श्रियम् (śriyam) - prosperity; राजन् (rājan) - O king; न (na) - not; चिरम् (ciram) - for long; शोककर्शिताः (śokakarśitāḥ) - worn by grief;]
(Having gone to Indraprastha, whom, her shining in Yudhiṣṭhira, we saw the prosperity, O king, not for long, worn by grief.)
O king, after Yudhiṣṭhira went to Indraprastha, we saw that prosperity shining in him, but not for long, as we were worn by grief. (03-226-5)
सा तु बुद्धिबलेनेयं राज्ञस्तस्माद्युधिष्ठिरात्। त्वयाक्षिप्ता महाबाहो दीप्यमानेव दृश्यते ॥०३-२२६-६॥
sā tu buddhibalene'yaṁ rājñas tasmād yudhiṣṭhirāt। tvayākṣiptā mahābāho dīpyamānevā dṛśyate ॥03-226-6॥
[सा (sā) (sā) - she; तु (tu) (tu) - but; बुद्धिबलेन (buddhibalena) (buddhibalena) - by strength of intellect; इयम् (iyam) (iyam) - this; राज्ञः (rājñaḥ) (rājñaḥ) - of the king; तस्मात् (tasmāt) (tasmāt) - from that; युधिष्ठिरात् (yudhiṣṭhirāt) (yudhiṣṭhirāt) - from Yudhiṣṭhira; त्वया (tvayā) (tvayā) - by you; आक्षिप्ता (ākṣiptā) (ākṣiptā) - cast off; महाबाहो (mahābāho) (mahābāho) - O mighty-armed; दीप्यमाना (dīpyamānā) (dīpyamānā) - blazing; इव (iva) (iva) - as if; दृश्यते (dṛśyate) (dṛśyate) - is seen;]
(She but by strength of intellect this, of the king, from that Yudhiṣṭhira, by you cast off, O mighty-armed, blazing as if, is seen.)
But she, by the strength of her intellect, having been cast off by you from King Yudhiṣṭhira, O mighty-armed one, now appears as if she were blazing. (03-226-6)
तथैव तव राजेन्द्र राजानः परवीरहन्। शासनेऽधिष्ठिताः सर्वे किं कुर्म इति वादिनः ॥०३-२२६-७॥
tathaiva tava rājendra rājānaḥ paravīrahan। śāsane'dhiṣṭhitāḥ sarve kiṃ kurma iti vādināḥ ॥03-226-7॥
[तथैव (tathaiva) - in the same manner; similarly; तव (tava) - your; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king of kings; राजानः (rājānaḥ) - kings; परवीरहन् (paravīrahan) - destroyer of enemy's warriors; शासने (śāsane) - in governance; in rule; अधिष्ठिताः (adhiṣṭhitāḥ) - established; stationed; सर्वे (sarve) - all; किं (kiṃ) - what; कुर्म (kurma) - shall (we) do; इति (iti) - thus; वादिनः (vādināḥ) - speaking; saying;]
(In the same manner, your O king of kings, the kings, destroyer of enemy's warriors, in governance established all, "What shall we do?" thus speaking.)
In the same way, O king of kings, all the kings who are established in your rule, destroyer of enemy's warriors, are saying, "What shall we do?" (03-226-7)
तवाद्य पृथिवी राजन्निखिला सागराम्बरा। सपर्वतवना देवी सग्रामनगराकरा ॥ नानावनोद्देशवती पत्तनैरुपशोभिता ॥०३-२२६-८॥
tavādya pṛthivī rājannikhilā sāgarāmbarā। saparvatavanā devī sagrāmanagarākarā॥ nānāvanoddeśavatī pattanairupaśobhitā॥03-226-8॥
[तव (tava) - your; अद्य (adya) - now; पृथिवी (pṛthivī) - earth; राजन् (rājan) - O king; निखिला (nikhilā) - entire; सागराम्बरा (sāgarāmbarā) - surrounded by the ocean; सपर्वतवना (saparvatavanā) - with mountains and forests; देवी (devī) - goddess; सग्रामनगराकरा (sagrāmanagarākarā) - with the forms of villages and cities; नानावनोद्देशवती (nānāvanoddeśavatī) - having various forest regions; पत्तनैः (pattanaiḥ) - by towns; उपशोभिता (upaśobhitā) - adorned;]
(Your now O king earth, entire surrounded by the ocean, with mountains and forests, goddess with the forms of villages and cities, having various forest regions, adorned by towns.)
Now, O king, your earth—entirely surrounded by the ocean, with mountains and forests, the goddess adorned with villages, cities, and various forest regions—is beautified by many towns. (3-226-8)
वन्द्यमानो द्विजै राजन्पूज्यमानश्च राजभिः। पौरुषाद्दिवि देवेषु भ्राजसे रश्मिवानिव ॥०३-२२६-९॥
vandyamānaḥ dvijaiḥ rājan pūjyamānaś ca rājabhiḥ। pauruṣāt divi deveṣu bhrājase raśmivān iva॥03-226-9॥
[वन्द्यमानः (vandyamānaḥ) - being honored; द्विजैः (dvijaiḥ) - by the twice-born; राजन् (rājan) - O king; पूज्यमानः (pūjyamānaḥ) - being worshipped; च (ca) - and; राजभिः (rājabhiḥ) - by kings; पौरुषात् (pauruṣāt) - from manliness; दिवि (divi) - in heaven; देवेषु (deveṣu) - among the gods; भ्राजसे (bhrājase) - you shine; रश्मिवान् (raśmivān) - the Sun (the possessor of rays); इव (iva) - like;]
(Being honored by the twice-born, O king, and being worshipped by kings, from manliness, in heaven among the gods you shine like the Sun.)
O king, being honored by the twice-born and worshipped by kings, by your manliness you shine among the gods in heaven like the Sun. (03-226-9)
रुद्रैरिव यमो राजा मरुद्भिरिव वासवः। कुरुभिस्त्वं वृतो राजन्भासि नक्षत्रराडिव ॥०३-२२६-१०॥
rudrair iva yamo rājā marudbhir iva vāsavaḥ। kurubhis tvaṃ vṛto rājan bhāsi nakṣatrarāḍ iva ॥03-226-10॥
[रुद्रैः (rudraiḥ) - by the Rudras; इव (iva) - like; यमः (yamaḥ) - Yama; राजा (rājā) - king; मरुद्भिः (marudbhiḥ) - by the Maruts; इव (iva) - like; वासवः (vāsavaḥ) - Vāsava; कुरुभिः (kurubhiḥ) - by the Kuru people; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; वृतः (vṛtaḥ) - surrounded; राजन् (rājan) - O king; भासि (bhāsi) - you shine; नक्षत्रराट् (nakṣatrarāṭ) - the king of the stars; इव (iva) - like;]
(Like Yama the king (is surrounded) by the Rudras, like Vāsava (is surrounded) by the Maruts, you, O king, surrounded by the Kurus, shine like the king of the stars.)
Just as King Yama is attended by the Rudras and Vāsava by the Maruts, you, O king, surrounded by the Kurus, shine like the king of the stars. (03-226-10)
ये स्म ते नाद्रियन्तेऽऽज्ञा नोद्विजन्ते कदा च न। पश्यामस्ताञ्श्रिया हीनान्पाण्डवान्वनवासिनः ॥०३-२२६-११॥
ye sma te nādriyante'’jñā nodvijante kadā ca na। paśyāmas tāñ śriyā hīnān pāṇḍavān vanavāsinaḥ ॥03-226-11॥
[ये (ye) - those who; स्म (sma) - indeed; ते (te) - they; न (na) - not; आद्रियन्ते (ādriyante) - respect; ऽऽज्ञा (’jñā) - ignorant; न (na) - not; उद्विजन्ते (udvijante) - are disturbed; कदा (kadā) - when; च (ca) - and; न (na) - not; पश्यामः (paśyāmaḥ) - we see; तान् (tān) - those; श्रिया (śriyā) - prosperity; हीनान् (hīnān) - deprived of; पाण्डवान् (pāṇḍavān) - the Pāṇḍavas; वनवासिनः (vanavāsinaḥ) - dwelling in the forest;]
(Those who indeed do not respect you, ignorant ones, are not disturbed at any time, and we see them, deprived of prosperity, the Pāṇḍavas dwelling in the forest.)
Those ignorant ones who do not respect you are never troubled; and now we see the Pāṇḍavas, deprived of prosperity, living in the forest. (03-226-11)
श्रूयन्ते हि महाराज सरो द्वैतवनं प्रति। वसन्तः पाण्डवाः सार्धं ब्राह्मणैर्वनवासिभिः ॥०३-२२६-१२॥
śrūyante hi mahārāja saro dvaitavanaṃ prati। vasantaḥ pāṇḍavāḥ sārddhaṃ brāhmaṇair vanavāsibhiḥ ॥03-226-12॥
[श्रूयन्ते (śrūyante) - are heard; (it is said); हि (hi) - indeed; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; सरः (saraḥ) - lake; द्वैतवनं (dvaitavanaṃ) - to Dvaita forest; प्रति (prati) - towards; वसन्तः (vasantaḥ) - dwelling; residing; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pāṇḍavas; सार्धं (sārddhaṃ) - together with; ब्राह्मणैः (brāhmaṇaiḥ) - with the Brāhmaṇas; वनवासिभिः (vanavāsibhiḥ) - with those dwelling in the forest;]
(It is heard indeed, O great king, at the lake towards Dvaita forest, the Pāṇḍavas dwell together with Brāhmaṇas and forest-dwellers.)
O great king, it is said that near the lake towards the Dvaita forest, the Pāṇḍavas are residing together with the Brāhmaṇas and the other forest-dwellers. (03-226-12)
स प्रयाहि महाराज श्रिया परमया युतः। प्रतपन्पाण्डुपुत्रांस्त्वं रश्मिवानिव तेजसा ॥०३-२२६-१३॥
sa prayāhi mahārāja śriyā paramayā yutaḥ। pratapan pāṇḍu-putrān tvaṃ raśmivān iva tejasā॥03-226-13॥
[स (sa) - he; प्रयाहि (prayāhi) - go forth; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; श्रिया (śriyā) - with fortune; परमया (paramayā) - supreme; युतः (yutaḥ) - endowed; प्रतपन् (pratapan) - burning; पाण्डुपुत्रान् (pāṇḍu-putrān) - the sons of Pāṇḍu; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; रश्मिवान् (raśmivān) - the Sun; इव (iva) - like; तेजसा (tejasā) - with splendor;]
(He, go forth, O great king, endowed with supreme fortune, burning the sons of Pāṇḍu, you like the Sun, with splendor.)
He, O great king, go forth endowed with supreme fortune, dazzling the sons of Pāṇḍu with your radiance like the Sun. (03-226-13)
स्थितो राज्ये च्युतान्राज्याच्छ्रिया हीनाञ्श्रिया वृतः। असमृद्धान्समृद्धार्थः पश्य पाण्डुसुतान्नृप ॥०३-२२६-१४॥
sthito rājye chyutān rājyāc chriyā hīnān śriyā vṛtaḥ. asamṛddhān samṛddhārthaḥ paśya pāṇḍusutān nṛpa ॥03-226-14॥
[स्थितः (sthitaḥ) - established; standing; राज्ये (rājye) - in the kingdom; च्युतान् (chyutān) - fallen; राज्यात् (rājyāt) - from the kingdom; श्रिया (śriyā) - by prosperity; by fortune; हीनान् (hīnān) - deprived; श्रिया (śriyā) - with prosperity; by prosperity; वृतः (vṛtaḥ) - endowed; surrounded; असमृद्धान् (asamṛddhān) - not prosperous; समृद्धार्थः (samṛddhārthaḥ) - one whose purpose is accomplished; prosperous; पश्य (paśya) - see; पाण्डुसुतान् (pāṇḍusutān) - the sons of Pāṇḍu; नृप (nṛpa) - O king;]
(Established in the kingdom, those fallen from the kingdom, deprived of prosperity, surrounded by prosperity; not prosperous, prosperous, see the sons of Pāṇḍu, O king.)
O king, see the sons of Pāṇḍu: while you remain established in the kingdom, they, fallen from the kingdom and deprived of prosperity, now with prosperity surrounding you, while they are not prosperous and you are prosperous. (03-226-14)
महाभिजनसम्पन्नं भद्रे महति संस्थितम्। पाण्डवास्त्वाभिवीक्षन्तां ययातिमिव नाहुषम् ॥०३-२२६-१५॥
mahābhijanasampannaṃ bhadre mahati saṃsthitam। pāṇḍavāstvābhivīkṣantāṃ yayātimiva nāhuṣam ॥03-226-15॥
[महाभिजनसम्पन्नं (mahābhijanasampannam) - endowed with great lineage; भद्रे (bhadre) - O auspicious one; महति (mahati) - in great; संस्थितम् (saṃsthitam) - situated; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pāṇḍavas; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; अभिवीक्षन्ताम् (abhivīkṣantām) - should regard; ययातिम् (yayātim) - Yayāti; इव (iva) - like; नाहुषम् (nāhuṣam) - descendant of Nahusha;]
(Endowed with great lineage, O auspicious one, situated in greatness, may the Pāṇḍavas regard you as Yayāti, the descendant of Nahusha.)
O auspicious one, endowed with great lineage and established in greatness, let the Pāṇḍavas regard you like Yayāti, the descendant of Nahusha. (03-226-15)
यां श्रियं सुहृदश्चैव दुर्हृदश्च विशां पते। पश्यन्ति पुरुषे दीप्तां सा समर्था भवत्युत ॥०३-२२६-१६॥
yāṃ śriyaṃ suhṛdaś caiva durhṛdaś ca viśāṃ pate | paśyanti puruṣe dīptāṃ sā samarthā bhavaty uta ॥03-226-16॥
[याम् (yām) - whom; (which, as object); श्रियम् (śriyam) - prosperity; सुहृदः (suhṛdaḥ) - friends; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; दुर्हृदः (durhṛdaḥ) - enemies; (bad-hearted) च (ca) - and; विशाम् (viśām) - of men; (of people) पते (pate) - O lord; पश्यन्ति (paśyanti) - see; पुरुषे (puruṣe) - in a man; दीप्ताम् (dīptām) - shining; (brilliant) सा (sā) - she; समर्था (samarthā) - competent; (capable) भवति (bhavati) - becomes; उत (uta) - indeed;]
(Whom prosperity, friends and indeed enemies, O lord of men, see (as) shining in a man, she indeed becomes competent.)
O lord of men, the prosperity which both friends and enemies see as shining in a man — she indeed becomes capable. (03-226-16)
समस्थो विषमस्थान्हि दुर्हृदो योऽभिवीक्षते। जगतीस्थानिवाद्रिस्थः किं ततः परमं सुखम् ॥०३-२२६-१७॥
samastho viṣamasthān hi durhṛdo yo'bhivīkṣate। jagatīsthānivādristhaḥ kiṃ tataḥ paramaṃ sukham ॥03-226-17॥
[समस्थः (samasthaḥ) - one who is even-minded; विषमस्थान् (viṣamasthān) - those in unequal (difficult) situations; हि (hi) - indeed; दुर्हृदः (durhṛdaḥ) - hard-hearted people; यः (yaḥ) - who; अभिवीक्षते (abhivīkṣate) - observes; जगतीस्थानीव (jagatīsthān-iva) - like (he is) standing on the earth; अद्रिस्थः (adristhaḥ) - standing on a mountain; किम् (kim) - what; ततः (tataḥ) - than that; परमम् (paramam) - higher; सुखम् (sukham) - happiness;]
(Even-minded, those in difficult situations indeed, hard-hearted people who observes, like standing on the earth, (as if) standing on a mountain; what than that higher happiness?)
One who is even-minded and views people in difficult and hard-hearted circumstances as if from a mountain, standing on the earth—what happiness is greater than that? (03-226-17)
न पुत्रधनलाभेन न राज्येनापि विन्दति। प्रीतिं नृपतिशार्दूल याममित्राघदर्शनात् ॥०३-२२६-१८॥
na putradhanalābhena na rājyenāpi vindati। prītiṃ nṛpatiśārdūla yām amitrāghadarśanāt ॥03-226-18॥
[न (na) - not; पुत्रधनलाभेन (putra-dhana-lābhena) - by the gain of son and wealth; न (na) - not; राज्येन (rājyena) - by kingdom; अपि (api) - even; विन्दति (vindati) - obtains; प्रीतिं (prītiṃ) - satisfaction; नृपतिशार्दूल (nṛpati-śārdūla) - O best of kings; याम् (yām) - which; अमित्राघदर्शनात् (amitra-āgha-darśanāt) - from the sight of the destruction of an enemy;]
(Not by the gain of son and wealth, not even by kingdom does one obtain satisfaction, O best of kings, which (is obtained) from the sight of the destruction of an enemy.)
O best of kings, the satisfaction obtained from witnessing the destruction of an enemy is not attained by gaining a son or wealth, nor even by obtaining a kingdom. (03-226-18)
किं नु तस्य सुखं न स्यादाश्रमे यो धनञ्जयम्। अभिवीक्षेत सिद्धार्थो वल्कलाजिनवाससम् ॥०३-२२६-१९॥
kiṁ nu tasya sukhaṁ na syādāśrame yo dhanañjayam। abhivīkṣeta siddhārtho valkalājinavāsasam ॥03-226-19॥
[किं (kiṁ) - what; नु (nu) - indeed; तस्य (tasya) - of him; सुखं (sukhaṁ) - happiness; न (na) - not; स्यात् (syāt) - would be; आश्रमे (āśrame) - in the hermitage; यः (yaḥ) - who; धनञ्जयम् (dhanañjayam) - Dhanañjaya (Arjuna); अभिवीक्षेत (abhivīkṣeta) - would gaze upon; सिद्धार्थः (siddhārthaḥ) - one whose aim is accomplished; वल्कलाजिनवाससम् (valkalājinavāsasam) - clad in bark and deer-skin;]
(What indeed of him happiness not would be in the hermitage, who Dhanañjaya, one whose aim is accomplished, clad in bark and deer-skin, would gaze upon.)
What happiness would not be his in the hermitage, who would behold Dhanañjaya, the accomplished one, clothed in bark and deer-skin? (03-226-19)
सुवाससो हि ते भार्या वल्कलाजिनवाससम्। पश्यन्त्वसुखितां कृष्णां सा च निर्विद्यतां पुनः ॥ विनिन्दतां तथात्मानं जीवितं च धनच्युता ॥०३-२२६-२०॥
suvāsaso hi te bhāryā valkalājinavāsasam। paśyantvasukhitāṁ kṛṣṇāṁ sā ca nirvidyatāṁ punaḥ॥ vinindatāṁ tathātmānaṁ jīvitaṁ ca dhanacyutā॥03-226-20॥
[सुवाससः (suvāsasaḥ) - fine-clothed; हि (hi) - indeed; ते (te) - your; भार्या (bhāryā) - wife; वल्कल-अजिन-वाससम् (valkala-ajina-vāsasam) - dressed in bark and deerskin; पश्यन्तु (paśyantu) - let (them) see; असुखिताम् (asukhitām) - unhappy; कृष्णाम् (kṛṣṇām) - dark-complexioned (Draupadi); सा (sā) - she; च (ca) - and; निर्विद्यताम् (nirvidyatām) - let (her) be disillusioned; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; विनिन्दताम् (vinindatām) - let (her) be scorned; तथा (tathā) - also; आत्मानम् (ātmānam) - herself; जीवितम् (jīvitam) - life; च (ca) - and; धन-च्युताः (dhana-cyutāḥ) - deprived of wealth;]
(Let your fine-clothed wife, now dressed in bark and deerskin, be seen unhappy and dark; let her again become disillusioned, let her be also scorned—herself and her life—being deprived of wealth.)
Let your wife, once adorned in fine clothes and now clad in bark and deerskin, be seen suffering and dark; let her again feel disillusioned, let her be scorned, she and her life, having been deprived of wealth. (03-226-20)
न तथा हि सभामध्ये तस्या भवितुमर्हति। वैमनस्यं यथा दृष्ट्वा तव भार्याः स्वलङ्कृताः ॥०३-२२६-२१॥
na tathā hi sabhāmadhye tasyā bhavitum arhati। vaimanasyaṃ yathā dṛṣṭvā tava bhāryāḥ svalaṅkṛtāḥ ॥03-226-21॥
[न (na) - not; तथा (tathā) - thus; हि (hi) - indeed; सभामध्ये (sabhāmadhye) - in the midst of the assembly; तस्या (tasyā) - to her; भवितुम् (bhavitum) - to be; अर्हति (arhati) - is appropriate; वैमनस्यं (vaimanasyaṃ) - discord; यथा (yathā) - as; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; तव (tava) - your; भार्याः (bhāryāḥ) - wives; स्वलङ्कृताः (svalaṅkṛtāḥ) - well adorned;]
(Not thus indeed in the midst of the assembly to her to be is appropriate; discord as having seen your wives well adorned.)
It is indeed not appropriate for her in the midst of the assembly; seeing discord as your wives are well adorned. (03-226-21)
एवमुक्त्वा तु राजानं कर्णः शकुनिना सह। तूष्णीं बभूवतुरुभौ वाक्यान्ते जनमेजय ॥०३-२२६-२२॥
evamuktvā tu rājānaṃ karṇaḥ śakuninā saha। tūṣṇīṃ babhūvaturubhau vākyānte janamejaya॥03-226-22॥
[एवमुक्त्वा (evam-uktvā) - thus-having spoken; तु (tu) - but; राजानं (rājānam) - king (accusative singular); कर्णः (karṇaḥ) - Karna; शकुनिना (śakuninā) - with Shakuni; सह (saha) - together with; तूष्णीं (tūṣṇīm) - silent; बभूवतुः (babhūvatuḥ) - they both became; उभौ (ubhau) - both; वाक्यान्ते (vākyānte) - at the end of the speech; जनमेजय (janamejaya) - O Janamejaya;]
(Thus having spoken but the king Karna together with Shakuni, silent, both became at the end of the speech O Janamejaya.)
