गदायुद्धविशेषज्ञो गदायुद्धविशारदः। कृतवान्रौहिणेयो यत्तन्ममाचक्ष्व सञ्जय ॥९-५९-२॥

(Having seen your son struck on the head by Bhimasena, Rama, the best of the attackers, became mightily angry.)
Upon witnessing Bhimasena strike your son on the head, Rama, the strongest among the attackers, was filled with intense anger.
ततो मध्ये नरेन्द्राणामूर्ध्वबाहुर्हलायुधः। कुर्वन्नार्तस्वरं घोरं धिग्धिग्भीमेत्युवाच ह ॥९-५९-४॥
tato madhye narendrāṇām ūrdhvabāhur halāyudhaḥ। kurvann ārtasvaraṃ ghoraṃ dhigdhig bhīmeti uvāca ha ॥9-59-4॥

(Then among the kings, Halayudha (Balarama) with raised arms, making a terrible distressed sound, said "Shame, shame on Bhima" indeed.)

अहो धिग्यदधो नाभेः प्रहृतं शुद्धविक्रमे। नैतद्दृष्टं गदायुद्धे कृतवान्यद्वृकोदरः ॥९-५९-५॥
aho dhigyadadho nābheḥ prahṛtaṃ śuddhavikrame। naitaddṛṣṭaṃ gadāyuddhe kṛtavānyadvṛkodaraḥ ॥9-59-5॥

(Alas, shame that from the navel struck in pure prowess. This has not been seen in mace battle, which Vrikodara has done.)

अधो नाभ्या न हन्तव्यमिति शास्त्रस्य निश्चयः। अयं त्वशास्त्रविन्मूढः स्वच्छन्दात्सम्प्रवर्तते ॥९-५९-६॥
adho nābhyā na hantavyamiti śāstrasya niścayaḥ। ayaṃ tvaśāstravinmūḍhaḥ svacchandātsampravartate ॥9-59-6॥
[अधः (adhaḥ) - below; नाभ्या (nābhyā) - navel; न (na) - not; हन्तव्यम् (hantavyam) - to be killed; इति (iti) - thus; शास्त्रस्य (śāstrasya) - of the scripture; निश्चयः (niścayaḥ) - determination; अयम् (ayam) - this; तु (tu) - but; अशास्त्रवित् (aśāstravit) - ignorant of scriptures; मूढः (mūḍhaḥ) - foolish; स्वच्छन्दात् (svacchandāt) - by his own will; सम्प्रवर्तते (sampravartate) - acts.;]
(Below the navel, it is determined by the scripture that it should not be killed. But this foolish one, ignorant of the scriptures, acts by his own will.)

तस्य तत्तद्ब्रुवाणस्य रोषः समभवन्महान्। ततो लाङ्गलमुद्यम्य भीममभ्यद्रवद्बली ॥९-५९-७॥

(His anger arose greatly as he spoke thus. Then, raising the plough, the strong one charged terribly.)
As he spoke those words, his anger grew immensely. Then, lifting his plough, the mighty one charged forward with great force.
तस्योर्ध्वबाहोः सदृशं रूपमासीन्महात्मनः। बहुधातुविचित्रस्य श्वेतस्येव महागिरेः ॥९-५९-८॥
tasyo'rdhvabāhoḥ sadṛśaṃ rūpamāsīnmahātmanaḥ। bahudhātuvicitrasya śvetasyeva mahāgireḥ ॥9-59-8॥

(The white and dark best of the Yadus shone exceedingly than that, having gone to the sky like the moon and sun at the end of the day.)
O King, the best of the Yadus, one white and one dark, shone more brilliantly than before, as they ascended to the sky like the moon and the sun at dusk.
उवाच चैनं संरब्धं शमयन्निव केशवः। आत्मवृद्धिर्मित्रवृद्धिर्मित्रमित्रोदयस्तथा ॥ विपरीतं द्विषत्स्वेतत्षड्विधा वृद्धिरात्मनः ॥९-५९-११॥

(Keshava said to him, who was angry, as if pacifying: "Self-growth, growth of friends, rise of friends of friends, thus; opposite in enemies, this is the sixfold growth of self.")
Keshava addressed the angry person as if to calm him, explaining that self-growth, the growth of friends, and the rise of friends of friends are the sixfold paths of growth, while the opposite applies to enemies.
आत्मन्यपि च मित्रेषु विपरीतं यदा भवेत्। तदा विद्यान्मनोज्यानिमाशु शान्तिकरो भवेत् ॥९-५९-१२॥

(Our natural friends, the Pāṇḍavas, pure in manliness. Their own paternal aunt's sons were greatly deceived by others.)
Our natural allies, the Pāṇḍavas, who are pure in their valor, have been greatly deceived by others, including their own paternal aunt's sons.
प्रतिज्ञापारणं धर्मः क्षत्रियस्येति वेत्थ ह। सुयोधनस्य गदया भङ्क्तास्म्यूरू महाहवे ॥ इति पूर्वं प्रतिज्ञातं भीमेन हि सभातले ॥९-५९-१४॥
pratijñāpāraṇaṃ dharmaḥ kṣatriyasya iti vettha ha। suyodhanasya gadayā bhaṅktāsmyūrū mahāhave ॥ iti pūrvaṃ pratijñātaṃ bhīmena hi sabhātale ॥9-59-14॥

(The fulfillment of a vow is the duty of a warrior, you know. I will break Suyodhana's thighs with the mace in the great battle. Thus it was promised before by Bhima in the assembly hall.)

अतो दोषं न पश्यामि मा क्रुधस्त्वं प्रलम्बहन् ॥९-५९-१५॥

yaunairhārdaiśca sambandhaiḥ sambaddhāḥ smera pāṇḍavaiḥ। teṣāṃ vṛddhyābhivṛddhirno mā krudhaḥ puruṣarṣabha ॥9-59-16॥
[यौनैः (yaunaiḥ) - by marriage ties; हार्दैः (hārdaiḥ) - by friendship ties; च (ca) - and; सम्बन्धैः (sambandhaiḥ) - by relations; सम्बद्धाः (sambaddhāḥ) - connected; स्मे (sme) - we; पाण्डवैः (pāṇḍavaiḥ) - with the Pandavas; तेषां (teṣāṃ) - their; वृद्ध्या (vṛddhyā) - by prosperity; अभिवृद्धिः (abhivṛddhiḥ) - increase; नः (naḥ) - our; मा (mā) - do not; क्रुधः (krudhaḥ) - be angry; पुरुषर्षभ (puruṣarṣabha) - O best of men;]
(By marriage ties, friendship ties, and relations, we are connected with the Pandavas. Their prosperity is our increase. Do not be angry, O best of men.)

धर्मः सुचरितः सद्भिः सह द्वाभ्यां नियच्छति। अर्थश्चात्यर्थलुब्धस्य कामश्चातिप्रसङ्गिनः ॥९-५९-१७॥
dharmaḥ sucaritaḥ sadbhiḥ saha dvābhyāṃ niyacchati। arthaścātyarthalubdhasya kāmaścātiprasaṅginaḥ ॥9-59-17॥
[धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - virtue; सुचरितः (sucaritaḥ) - well-practiced; सद्भिः (sadbhiḥ) - by the good; सह (saha) - with; द्वाभ्यां (dvābhyāṃ) - by two; नियच्छति (niyacchati) - restrains; अर्थः (arthaḥ) - wealth; च (ca) - and; अत्यर्थलुब्धस्य (atyarthalubdhasya) - of the excessively greedy; कामः (kāmaḥ) - desire; च (ca) - and; अतिप्रसङ्गिनः (atiprasaṅginaḥ) - of the overly attached;]
(Virtue, well-practiced by the good, restrains with two. Wealth and desire of the excessively greedy and overly attached.)
A well-practiced virtue, when accompanied by good people, restrains both wealth and desire, especially in those who are excessively greedy and overly attached.
धर्मार्थौ धर्मकामौ च कामार्थौ चाप्यपीडयन्। धर्मार्थकामान्योऽभ्येति सोऽत्यन्तं सुखमश्नुते ॥९-५९-१८॥

(One who pursues righteousness and wealth, righteousness and desire, and desire and wealth without harming, attains righteousness, wealth, and desires, he enjoys extreme happiness.)
He who pursues righteousness, wealth, and desires without causing harm, attains them and enjoys ultimate happiness.
तदिदं व्याकुलं सर्वं कृतं धर्मस्य पीडनात्। भीमसेनेन गोविन्द कामं त्वं तु यथात्थ माम् ॥९-५९-१९॥
tadidaṁ vyākulaṁ sarvaṁ kṛtaṁ dharmasya pīḍanāt। bhīmasenena govinda kāmaṁ tvaṁ tu yathāttha mām ॥9-59-19॥

(This entire distress has been caused by the oppression of dharma by Bhimasena, O Govinda, but you say to me as you desire.)
O Govinda, this entire distress has been caused by Bhimasena's oppression of dharma. However, you may instruct me as you wish.
वासुदेव उवाच॥

अरोषणो हि धर्मात्मा सततं धर्मवत्सलः। भवान्प्रख्यायते लोके तस्मात्संशाम्य मा क्रुधः ॥९-५९-२०॥
aroṣaṇo hi dharmātmā satataṃ dharmavatsalaḥ। bhavānprakhyāyate loke tasmātsaṃśāmya mā krudhaḥ ॥9-59-20॥

(Therefore, having killed the one who lacks wisdom, is greedy, and under the sway of desires, let the Pandava obtain his desire, whether in righteousness or unrighteousness.)
Therefore, let the Pandava achieve his desires by eliminating those who are unwise, greedy, and driven by desires, regardless of whether it is in the realm of righteousness or unrighteousness.

Upon hearing Dharmaraja's words, Vasudeva replied, "As you wish, let it be so," though it was difficult for the chief of the Yadu dynasty.
इत्युक्तो वासुदेवेन भीमप्रियहितैषिणा। अन्वमोदत तत्सर्वं यद्भीमेन कृतं युधि ॥९-५९-३६॥

भीमसेनोऽपि हत्वाजौ तव पुत्रममर्षणः। अभिवाद्याग्रतः स्थित्वा सम्प्रहृष्टः कृताञ्जलिः ॥९-५९-३७॥

तवाद्य पृथिवी राजन्क्षेमा निहतकण्टका। तां प्रशाधि महाराज स्वधर्ममनुपालयन् ॥९-५९-३९॥
tavādya pṛthivī rājankṣemā nihatakaṇṭakā। tāṃ praśādhi mahārāja svadharmamanu pālayan ॥9-59-39॥
