लोमश उवाच॥
Lomaśa said.
उशीरबीजं मैनाकं गिरिं श्वेतं च भारत। समतीतोऽसि कौन्तेय कालशैलं च पार्थिव ॥०३-१४०-१॥
O Bhārata, you have crossed the Uśīra seed, Maināka mountain, Śveta, and also, O son of Kuntī, the Kāla mountain, O king. (03-140-1)
एषा गङ्गा सप्तविधा राजते भरतर्षभ। स्थानं विरजसं रम्यं यत्राग्निर्नित्यमिध्यते ॥०३-१४०-२॥
O best of the Bharatas, this seven-branched Gaṅgā shines. The place is pure and pleasant where the fire is always kindled. (03-140-2)
एतद्वै मानुषेणाद्य न शक्यं द्रष्टुमप्युत। समाधिं कुरुताव्यग्रास्तीर्थान्येतानि द्रक्ष्यथ ॥०३-१४०-३॥
This, indeed, cannot be seen by a human today. Practice concentration without distraction, and you will see these holy places. (3-140-3)
श्वेतं गिरिं प्रवेक्ष्यामो मन्दरं चैव पर्वतम्। यत्र माणिचरो यक्षः कुबेरश्चापि यक्षराट् ॥०३-१४०-४॥
We shall enter the White Mountain, and also Mandara mountain, where the Yakṣa Maṇicara and Kubera, the king of the Yakṣas, reside. (03-140-4)
अष्टाशीतिसहस्राणि गन्धर्वाः शीघ्रचारिणः। तथा किम्पुरुषा राजन्यक्षाश्चैव चतुर्गुणाः ॥०३-१४०-५॥
There are eighty-eight thousand swift-moving Gandharvas; likewise, O King, the Kimpuruṣas and Yakṣas are four times as many. (03-140-5)
अनेकरूपसंस्थाना नानाप्रहरणाश्च ते। यक्षेन्द्रं मनुजश्रेष्ठ माणिभद्रमुपासते ॥०३-१४०-६॥
O best of men, they of many forms and bearing various weapons worship Māṇibhadra, the lord of the yakṣas. (03-140-6)
तेषामृद्धिरतीवाग्र्या गतौ वायुसमाश्च ते। स्थानात्प्रच्यावयेयुर्ये देवराजमपि ध्रुवम् ॥०३-१४०-७॥
Their prosperity is exceedingly great, they are as swift as the wind, and they are those who could even shake the steadfast king of the gods from his position. (03-140-7)
तैस्तात बलिभिर्गुप्ता यातुधानैश्च रक्षिताः। दुर्गमाः पर्वताः पार्थ समाधिं परमं कुरु ॥०३-१४०-८॥
O Pārtha, these mountains, difficult to access, are protected by powerful beings and guarded by yātudhānas; therefore, dear one, maintain the highest concentration. (03-140-8)
कुबेरसचिवाश्चान्ये रौद्रा मैत्राश्च राक्षसाः। तैः समेष्याम कौन्तेय यत्तो विक्रमणे भव ॥०३-१४०-९॥
Kubera's attendants, as well as other fierce and friendly Rākṣasas, I will join battle with them, O son of Kuntī; be prepared to charge. (03-140-9)
कैलासः पर्वतो राजन्षड्योजनशतान्युत। यत्र देवाः समायान्ति विशाला यत्र भारत ॥०३-१४०-१०॥
O king, Kailāsa mountain is indeed six hundred yojanas in extent; it is the place where the gods assemble, O Bhārata. (03-140-10)
असङ्ख्येयास्तु कौन्तेय यक्षराक्षसकिंनराः। नागाः सुपर्णा गन्धर्वाः कुबेरसदनं प्रति ॥०३-१४०-११॥
But, O son of Kunti, innumerable yakṣas, rākṣasas, kiṃnaras, nāgas, suparṇas, and gandharvas proceeded towards Kubera's abode. (03-140-11)
तान्विगाहस्व पार्थाद्य तपसा च दमेन च। रक्ष्यमाणो मया राजन्भीमसेनबलेन च ॥०३-१४०-१२॥
O Pārtha, today enter into them through austerity and self-control, being protected by me and by the strength of Bhīmasena, O king. (03-140-12)
स्वस्ति ते वरुणो राजा यमश्च समितिञ्जयः। गङ्गा च यमुना चैव पर्वतश्च दधातु ते ॥०३-१४०-१३॥
May well-being be to you; may King Varuṇa, Yama, the conqueror of assemblies, Gaṅgā, Yamunā, and the mountain, indeed, bestow (well-being) upon you. (03-140-13)
इन्द्रस्य जाम्बूनदपर्वताग्रे; शृणोमि घोषं तव देवि गङ्गे। गोपाययेमं सुभगे गिरिभ्यः; सर्वाजमीढापचितं नरेन्द्रम् ॥ भवस्व शर्म प्रविविक्षतोऽस्य; शैलानिमाञ्शैलसुते नृपस्य ॥०३-१४०-१४॥
O Ganga, goddess, I hear your sound on the summit of Indra's golden mountain. O fortunate one, protect this king, respected by all descendants of Ajamīḍha, from the mountains. Become the safeguard for this king, who wants to cross these mountains, O daughter of the mountain. (03-140-14)
युधिष्ठिर उवाच॥
Yudhiṣṭhira said.
अपूर्वोऽयं सम्भ्रमो लोमशस्य; कृष्णां सर्वे रक्षत मा प्रमादम्। देशो ह्ययं दुर्गतमो मतोऽस्य; तस्मात्परं शौचमिहाचरध्वम् ॥०३-१४०-१५॥
This agitation of Lomaśa is unprecedented; all of you protect Kṛṣṇā, do not be negligent. This place is indeed considered by him to be most difficult to traverse; therefore, practice utmost purity here. (03-140-15)
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥
Vaiśampāyana said.
ततोऽब्रवीद्भीममुदारवीर्यं; कृष्णां यत्तः पालय भीमसेन। शून्येऽर्जुनेऽसंनिहिते च तात; त्वमेव कृष्णां भजसेऽसुखेषु ॥०३-१४०-१६॥
Then, one spoke to the mighty Bhīma: 'O Bhīmasena, steadfastly protect Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī). When Arjuna is absent and the place is empty, dear one, you alone care for Kṛṣṇā in times of adversity.' (03-140-16)
ततो महात्मा यमजौ समेत्य; मूर्धन्युपाघ्राय विमृज्य गात्रे। उवाच तौ बाष्पकलं स राजा; मा भैष्टमागच्छतमप्रमत्तौ ॥०३-१४०-१७॥
Then the great-souled king, coming to the two sons of Yama, affectionately smelled their heads, wiped their limbs, and, seeing them full of tears, said: "Do not be afraid, come here attentively." (03-140-17)
