bhīmasena uvāca॥
Bhīmasena said.
dhig astu me bāhubalaṁ gāṇḍīvaṁ phalgunasya ca। yat te raktau purā bhūtvā pāṇī kṛtakiṇāv ubhau॥04-20-1॥
Let my arm strength, Gāṇḍīva, and even Pḥalguna be despised—because formerly, your two blood-covered hands were both consecrated with unguents. (04-20-1)
sabhāyāṃ sma virāṭasya karomi kadanaṃ mahat। tatra māṃ dharmarājastu kaṭākṣeṇa nyavārayat॥ tadahaṃ tasya vijñāya sthita evāsmi bhāmini॥04-20-2॥
Indeed, in the assembly of Virāṭa, I was performing a great slaughter. There, Dharmarāja restrained me with a mere glance. Realizing this, I simply remained there, O fair one. (04-20-2)
yac ca rāṣṭrāt prachyavanaṃ kurūṇām avadhaś ca yaḥ। suyodhanasya karṇasya śakuneḥ saubalasya ca॥04-20-3॥
And that expulsion from the kingdom and the destruction of the Kurus—of Suyodhana, Karṇa, Śakuni, and the son of Subala (04-20-3)
duḥśāsanasya pāpasya yanmayā na hṛtaṃ śiraḥ। tanme dahati kalyāṇi hṛdi śalyamivārpitam॥ mā dharmaṃ jahi suśroṇi krodhaṃ jahi mahāmate॥04-20-4॥
The fact that I did not take the head of sinful Duḥśāsana burns within my heart like a fixed thorn, O auspicious lady. Do not abandon righteousness, O beautiful-hipped one; give up anger, O wise one. (04-20-4)
imaṃ ca samupālaṃbhaṃ tvatto rājā yudhiṣṭhiraḥ। śṛṇuyādyadi kalyāṇi kṛtsnaṃ jahyātsa jīvitam ॥04-20-5॥
If King Yudhishthira were to hear this reproach from you, O auspicious lady, he might entirely give up his life. (04-20-5)
dhanañjayo vā suśroṇi yamau vā tanumadhyame। lokāntaragateṣveṣu nāhaṃ śakṣyāmi jīvitum ॥04-20-6॥
O beautiful-hipped and slender-waisted one, whether it be Arjuna or the twin sons of Yama—if they have departed to other worlds, among them I am not able to live. (04-20-6)
sukanyā nāma śāryātī bhārgavaṁ cyavanaṁ vane। valmīka-bhūtaṁ śāmyantam anvapadyata bhāminī ॥04-20-7॥
The illustrious lady named Sukanya, daughter of Śāryāti, approached Cyavana, the descendant of Bhṛgu, who was lying quietly in the forest, having become encased in an anthill. (04-20-7)
nāḍāyanī cendrasenā rūpeṇa yadi te śrutā। patimanvacaradvṛddhaṃ purā varṣasahasriṇam ॥04-20-8॥
If you have heard of Nāḍāyanī and Indrasenā, in that form, she formerly followed her aged husband who was a thousand years old. (04-20-8)
duhitā janakasyāpi vaidehī yadi te śrutā। patimanvacarat sītā mahāraṇya-nivāsinam ॥04-20-9॥
If you have heard of Vaidehī, the daughter of Janaka, Sītā followed her husband, who was dwelling in the great forest. (04-20-9)
rakṣasā nigrahaṁ prāpya rāmasya mahiṣī priyā। kliśyamānāpi suśroṇī rāmamevānvapadyata ॥04-20-10॥
Having suffered oppression by the demon, the beloved queen of Rāma, though tormented, with beautiful hips, followed Rāma alone. (04-20-10)
lopāmudrā tathā bhīru vayorūpasamanvitā। agastyamanvayāddhitvā kāmānsarvān amānuṣān॥04-20-11॥
Lopamudra, timid and endowed with age and beauty, having abandoned all non-human desires due to her association with Agastya. (04-20-11)
yathaitāḥ kīrtitā nāryo rūpavatyaḥ pativratāḥ। tathā tvam api kalyāṇi sarvaiḥ samuditā guṇaiḥ॥04-20-12॥
Just as these renowned women, who are beautiful and devoted to their husbands, so too you, O auspicious one, are endowed with all virtues. (04-20-12)
mā dīrghaṃ kṣama kālaṃ tvaṃ māsa-madhy-ardha-saṃmitam। pūrṇe trayodaśe varṣe rājño rājñī bhaviṣyasi॥04-20-13॥
Do not endure a long time—just a period equal to one and a half months. When the thirteenth year is completed, you will become the queen of the king. (04-20-13)
draupady uvāca॥
Draupadī said.
ārtayaitanmaya bhīma kṛtaṃ bāṣpavimokṣaṇam। apārayantyā duḥkhāni na rājānamupālabhe ॥04-20-14॥
O Bhīma, this shedding of tears has been done by me, the distressed one; unable to endure these sufferings, I do not blame the king. (04-20-14)
vimuktena vyatītena bhīmasena mahābala। pratyupasthitakālasya kāryasyānantaro bhava ॥04-20-15॥
Let go of what has been relinquished and what has passed, O mighty Bhīmasena. Be wholly present for the task at hand in the present moment. (04-20-15)
mameha bhīma kaikeyī rūpābhibhavaśaṅkayā। nityamudvijate rājā kathaṁ neyādimāmiti ॥04-20-16॥
Here, on account of my terrible Kaikeyi, with the suspicion that (I) surpass her in beauty, the king is always troubled, thinking, 'How can I take this woman along?' (04-20-16)
tasyā viditvā taṃ bhāvaṃ svayaṃ cānṛtadarśanaḥ। kīcako'yaṃ suduṣṭātmā sadā prārthayate hi mām ॥04-20-17॥
Having realized her feelings and being a liar himself, this Kīcaka, who is very wicked-minded, always seeks me. (04-20-17)
tam ahaṃ kupitā bhīma punaḥ kopaṃ niyamya ca। abruvaṃ kāmasaṃmūḍham ātmānaṃ rakṣa kīcaka ॥04-20-18॥
Then I, though angered, O Bhima, again restraining my anger, spoke to my desire-deluded self, 'Protect me, O Kīcaka.' (04-20-18)
gandharvāṇām ahaṃ bhāryā pañcānāṃ mahiṣī priyā। te tvāṃ nihanyur durdharṣāḥ śūrāḥ sāhasakāriṇaḥ॥04-20-19॥
I am the wife of the Gandharvas, the beloved queen-consort of five. They, invincible, heroic and daring, would slay you. (04-20-19)
evam-uktaḥ sa duṣṭātmā kīcakaḥ pratyuvāca ha। nāhaṃ bibhemi sairandhri gandharvāṇām śucismite ॥04-20-20॥
Thus, when addressed, the wicked Kīcaka replied: "I am not afraid, O Sairandhrī, of the Gandharvas, O one with a pure smile." (04-20-20)
śataṃ sahasram api vā gandharvāṇām ahaṃ raṇe। samāgataṃ haniṣyāmi tvaṃ bhīru kuru me kṣaṇam ॥04-20-21॥
Whether a hundred or even a thousand Gandharvas assemble in battle, I will slay them; fearful one, just give me a moment. (04-20-21)
ityukte cābruvaṃ sūtaṃ kāmāturamahaṃ punaḥ. na tvaṃ pratibalasteṣāṃ gandharvāṇāṃ yaśasvinām ॥04-20-22॥
When this had been spoken, I, overcome by desire, again said to the charioteer: "You are not a match for those glorious Gandharvas." (4-20-22)
dharme sthitāsmi satataṃ kulaśīlasamanvitā। necchāmi kañcidvadhyantaṃ tena jīvasi kīcaka ॥04-20-23॥
I always abide in righteousness and am endowed with family virtue; I do not wish anyone to be killed, and because of that, you are alive, Kīcaka. (04-20-23)
evam-uktaḥ sa duṣṭātmā prahasya svanavat tadā। na tiṣṭhati sma sanmārge na ca dharmaṃ bubhūṣati॥ 04-20-24॥
When thus addressed, that wicked-minded one laughed aloud at that time, and did not remain on the right path, nor did he wish for righteousness. (04-20-24)
pāpātmā pāpabhāvaś ca kāmarāgavaśānugaḥ। avinītaś ca duṣṭātmā pratyākhyātaḥ punaḥ punaḥ॥ darśane darśane hanyāt tathā jahyāñ ca jīvitam॥04-20-25॥
One who is sinful in soul, of sinful nature, under the sway of passion and desire, undisciplined and corrupt-minded, repeatedly rejected—on sight, again and again, should be slain; thus, I would even give up my life. (04-20-25)
taddharme yatamānānāṃ mahāndharmo naśiṣyati। samayaṃ rakṣamāṇānāṃ bhāryā vo na bhaviṣyati ॥04-20-26॥
Great righteousness will not perish among those striving to uphold that duty; as long as you are protecting the agreement, your wife will not be lost. (04-20-26)
bhāryāyāṃ rakṣyamāṇāyāṃ prajā bhavati rakṣitā. prajāyāṃ rakṣyamāṇāyām ātmā bhavati rakṣitaḥ ॥04-20-27॥
When the wife is protected, the offspring are protected; when the progeny is protected, the self is protected. (04-20-27)
vadatāṃ varṇadharmāṃś ca brāhmaṇānāṃ hi me śrutam। kṣatriyasya sadā dharmo nānyaḥ śatrunibarhaṇāt ॥04-20-28॥
I have heard from those who speak about the duties of the castes and of the Brāhmaṇas. The duty of a Kṣatriya is always solely the destruction of enemies; there is no other. (04-20-28)
paśyato dharmarājasya kīcako māṃ padāvadhīt। tava caiva samakṣaṃ vai bhīmasena mahābala ॥04-20-29॥
While Dharmarāja looked on, Kīcaka struck me with his foot, and this happened right in your presence, O mighty-armed Bhīmasena. (04-20-29)
tvayā hy ahaṃ paritrātā tasmād ghorāj jaṭāsurāt। jayadrathaṃ tathaiva tvam ajaiṣīr bhrātṛbhiḥ saha ॥04-20-30॥
Indeed, by your actions I was rescued from that terrible demon Jaṭāsura. Likewise, together with your brothers, you defeated Jayadratha. (04-20-30)
jahīmamapi pāpaṃ tvaṃ yo'yaṃ māmavamanyate। kīcako rājavāllabhyācchokakṛnmama bhārata ॥04-20-31॥
O Bhārata, you destroy even this wicked Kīcaka, who despises me and, favored by the king, has become the cause of my sorrow. (04-20-31)
tam evaṃ kāmasaṃmattaṃ bhindhi kumbham ivāśmani। yo nimittam anarthānāṃ bahūnāṃ mama bhārata॥04-20-32॥
O Bhārata, break that one who is thus deluded by desire—who is the cause of many misfortunes for me—like a pot upon a stone. (04-20-32)
taṁ cej jīvantam ādityaḥ prātar abhyudayiṣyati. viṣam āloḍya pāsyāmi mā kīcaka-vaśaṁ gamam ॥ śreyo hi maraṇaṁ mahyaṁ bhīmasena tavāgrataḥ ॥04-20-33॥
If he remains alive when the sun rises in the morning, I will drink poison rather than be under Kīcaka's control. For me, Bhīmasena, death before you is truly better. (04-20-33)
vaiśampāyana uvāca॥
Vaiśampāyana said;
ity uktvā prārudat kṛṣṇā bhīmasyorah samāśritā। bhīmaś ca tāṃ pariṣvajya mahatsāntvaṃ prayujya ca॥ kīcakaṃ manasā agacchat sṛkkiṇī parisaṃlihan॥ 04-20-34॥
Having said thus, Kṛṣṇā wept, leaning on Bhīma's chest. Bhīma, embracing her and offering great consolation, mentally went towards Kīcaka, licking the corners of his mouth. (04-20-34)
